Opportunities
Opportunities for Students
The College of Idaho Department of Biology offers many opportunities for students to extend their learning beyond the walls of the classroom.
Approximately every 2-3 years, the Biology Department offers an off-campus field experience during the Winter Term. The most recent trips have been to Hawaii (2004) and Australia (2006).
Internships
Students who desire first-hand experience in their chosen fields can take BIO-397/497. BIO-497 involves independent research as part of the internship but BIO-397 does not (see catalog). The Biology Department has established contacts in many fields, and we will gladly help adequately prepared students secure an appropriate internship position. Students may also set up their own internships.
For more information, see the Biology Department Student Handbook: Opportunities as an Undergraduate.
Lab Assistant
Students are often asked to assist faculty members in the preparation and/or lab tutoring or teaching of laboratory sections of various courses. It may be possible, with careful, advanced planning to get academic credit for this assistance. If you are interested, consult the faculty member who teaches the lab.
Work Study
Work study positions are available in the Biology Department. Positions include the following:
- Caring for living plants and animals in the Department
- Assisting in laboratories
- Assisting in office and general support
- Assisting in the Harold M. Tucker Herbarium
- Assisting in the Orma J. Smith Museum of Natural History
Other work may be available. Check with one of the Biology faculty members.
