Putnam Results at The College of Idaho

Putnam 2012

Eleven College of Idaho students competed in the 73rd annual Putnam mathematical contest this December 1. Calendrical difficulty may have depressed turnout, but Matt Farrell '14 and Gary Parkinson '15 each scored 10 points, earning them rankings of 1360.5 and the fourth year in a row for double-digit scores from the Yotes! This year's high score was 100 out of a possible 120. Congratulations to all C of I participants: Matt Farrell '13, Olivia Poland '13, Gary Parkinson '15, J.T. Putnam 2011

Seventeen Yotes participated in the 72nd annual Putnam, held December 3, 2011. James Collet '12 scored 10 points and Jiwen Kevin Xu '12 scored 9. James's score earned him a ranking of 191 and Kevin's a ranking of 194, both excellent marks! This was a tougher-than-average Putnam. The team did well enough to earn the College of Idaho an institutional ranking of 139, the highest in recent memory and within the top 25% of 572 competing institutions. Putnam 2010

A record 18 C of I students participated in the 71st Annual Putnam Mathematical Competition on December 4, 2010. A total of 4296 students from 546 institutions in Canada and the United States competed. Three Yotes scored a total of 14 points this year: Jiwen Kevin Xu '12 scored 10 points. Scott Johnson '11 and James Collet ’12 each scored 2 points, the median score this year. Kevin’s score of 10 earned him a ranking of 1669.5, placing him in the top 39% of all contestants. James doubled his personal best of 1 point earned his Freshman year. Putnam 2009

Thirteen C of I students participated in the 70th Annual Putnam Mathematical Competition on December 5, 2009. A total of 4036 students from 546 institutions in Canada and the United States competed. We are proud to announce we had the HIGHEST TEAM SCORE since 1993!  28 points were scored by two students: Nate Landis '10 scored 20 points and Matthew Conner '10 scored 8 points.  Both Nate and Matthew scored well above the median of 2 points this year.  Nate's score of 20 earned him a ranking of 707, placing him in the top 17% of all contestants.  Matthew placed in the top 46% with a rank of 1868.  Way to go!!  Congratulations to all 13 participants: Matthew Conner ’10,  Alexandra Gertman '10, Nate Landis '10, Mike "Red" Tobiason '10, Seth Watson '10, Trisha Randazzo '11, Andrew Carpenter '12, James Collet ’12, Justus Jenkins '12, Marissa Rider '12, Kevin Xu '12, Shravan Vinayakumar ’12, and Azra Cickusic '13. Fifteen C of I students participated in the 69th Annual Putnam Mathematical Competition. A total of 3627 students from 545 colleges and universities in Canada and the United States competed. We are proud to announce we had one student score on the exam: James Collet '12 scored one point. Congratulations! James' score earned him a rank of 1829. Ten C of I students participated in the 68th Annual Putnam Mathematical Competition.  A total of 3753 students from 516 colleges and universities in Canada and the US competed. We are proud to announce we had three students score on the exam: Tyler Gross '08 scored an 8, Sara Goltry '09 scored a 2 and Ben Coate '09 scored a 1. Congratulations! Tyler's score earned him a rank of 1412, placing him in the top 38% of all contestants. Putnam 2006

A record 16 C of I students took the 6 hour, 12 question National Putnam Examination this year! The median score was once again 1 out of a possible 120 points. The high score was 101. A total of 3640 students from 508 colleges and universities in Canada and the US competed. We are proud to announce we had two students score above 0: Vincent Telleria '07 scored a 10 and Ben Coate '09 scored a 1. Congratulations! Vince's score earned him a rank of 747, once again placing his score in the top 25%. Putnam 2005

The results from the 2005 Putnam Exam are in. As you probably know, the exam consisted of 12 problems, each one worth 10 points. The high score was 100 out of 120. The median score was 1 out of 120. 3545 students from the US and Canada competed. We had two students score higher than 0 on the exam: Vincent Telleria '07 scored an 11 and Corey Westfall '07 scored a 2. Congratulations! Vince's score put him in the top 25% of all scores, and it marks the highest score at CofI in at least 6 years. Congratulations to all 10 participants: Ryan Schaefges '06, Kevin Makinson '07, Bert Martin '07, Christopher Matteson '07, Corey Westfall '07, Jared Smith '07, Vincent Telleria '07, Linda Wesley '08, Ben Coate '09 and Ashley Grealish '09. It's great to have such a large turnout. Let's do it again next year, eat more pizza, and improve our scores!

Putnam 2004

The scores are in, and it turned out to be a tough year for the Yotes. The national median was 1 out of 120, and there is one Yote who scored the median: Congratulations Ryan Schaefges '06. Everyone else scored 1 point below the median.
