HIS 102:  Western Civilization Study Links


There are many sites available on the internet relevant to the study of all areas of history. Below are listed just a few of the many of particular relevance to the study of Western Civilization.

Western Civilization "textbook" sources:  Internet Links

  1. Dr. Steven Kries a provides an excellent set of European history and other lectures for online use at The History Guide.   Note specifically his Lectures on Ancient and Medieval European History and his Lectures on Early Modern European History.  Together, they provide online historical narratives related to most of the materials covered in this course although, of course, with a somewhat different set of emphases from what you will get in your classroom lectures.
  2. Dr. Gerhard Rempel at Western New England College also provides a full set of topical lectures on subjects in his lecture series on the history of Western Civilization I and Western Civilization II.
  3. Dr. Skip Knox at Boise State University has a useful site filled with relevant narrative review material for his Medieval Western Civilization course.
  4. Try also the Free University Western Civilization I and Western Civilization II courses assembled from several sites on the web.

General History:  online encyclopedias

  1. One good general outline/content reference site is The Encyclopedia of World History.
  2. Other online encyclopedias: Encyclopedia.com, the Columbia Encyclopedia, and Microsoft's Encarta.

  1. Hyperhistory gives very useful interactive timelines on events, people, ideas, culture, and science, for all areas of history.
  2. TimeRef has links to timelines for medieval history and also a selection of medieval maps.
  3. WhoWhatWhen has interactive timelines for early modern and modern history
  4. Searchbeat.com has an extended list of links and timelines for US, Global, and Cultural History.
  5. AlternaTime has general timelines that focus on cultural and scientific history.
  6. The BBC has a detailed timeline of British and Scottish History.

General History:  Documentary Sources

  1. The Ancient History Sourcebook, Medieval Sourcebook, Modern History Sourcebook, and Global History Sourcebook at Fordham University provide an excellent selection of documents spanning a wide range of periods.
  2. Sources for General History includes historical texts, images, and various links for American and Global History.  All links are listed alphabetically by subject.
  3. The University of Idaho has a large collection of primary sources for global history.
  4. EuroDocs provides links for many primary sources from Western European countries. 
  5. The University of Oklahoma has a large collection of American documents.

General History:  Internet Links

  1. History Net has featured articles on all areas of history, especially Western European and American History.
  2. Virtual Library provides and exhaustive listing of links to different web sites on all areas of history listed by country or by period.
