Jacob K Javits Fellowship Program

The Javits Fellowship Program provides financial assistance to students of superior ability, as demonstrated by their achievements and exceptional promise, to undertake study at the doctoral and Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) level.  Originally known as the National Graduate Fellowship Program, it was renamed the Javits Fellows Program in 1986 and supports students seeking advanced degrees in the Arts (art history, creative writing, music performance, theory & literature, studio arts, and others), Humanities (English, foreign languages, history, philosophy, and others), and Social Sciences (anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, sociology, and others).

Students must be U.S. citizens and in their first year of graduate study or entering a doctoral program in the year they will receive the fellowship.  The stipend ($15,000 in 1998) and institutional payment for tuition can be renewed for up to four years.  Approximately 75 scholars have been chosen annually, with 60% of awards going to applicants who have not yet entered graduate study.  Of the awards made, 60% are given in the humanities, 20% in the arts, and 20% in the social sciences.
