Documents and Archives on the Internet


An increasing number of relevant documents for historians are becoming available on the Internet. In addition, many archives are now also opening their catalogs through Internet sites. Below is a listing of some of the more useful of these sites.


Documents

  1. The Ancient History Sourcebook, Medieval Sourcebook, Modern History Sourcebook, and Global History Sourcebook at Fordham University provide an excellent selection of documents spanning a wide range of periods.
  2. Sources for General History includes historical texts, images, and various links for American and Global History.  All links are listed alphabetically by subject.
  3. For more historical documents and electronic texts Hanover College provides an excellent selection for undergraduates.  Follow the links to the Historical Text Project and to the Electronic Text Collection.
  4. The excellent list of Etext links at Rutgers University provides many links in British and American history. Scroll down from the Medieval section to find texts through to the twentieth century.
  5. EuroDocs provides links for many primary sources from Western European countries. 
  6. The University of Oklahoma has a large collection of American documents.
  7. This site provides many documents on World War I
  8. Many documents on American History are available at this site.
  9. Many medieval documents are available through Fordham University
  10. The Historical Text Archive provides many documents of historical interest, especially on Latin America.
  11. Visit CARRIE, a full-text electronic library.  See also the Online Books Page for electronic texts of tens of thousands of books.
  12. The Center for Electronic Texts in the Humanities also has an impressive library of Etexts.

Archives

  1. The University of Idaho has a very full listing of archives and their collections arranged by geographical area of interest.
  2. The National Archives Site has made available subject indexed files to archives in the United Kingdom.  See particularly the National Register of Archives.

Bibliographies and Reviews

  1. Visit the History-Net Review Project which provides book reviews by professional historians
  2. The Yale University Library provides a useful listing of research starting points for different areas of history
