Samuel Whitney Smith
Samuel Whitney Smith is a native of Frankfort, Indiana, where he won the statewide Tri Kappa Music Competition and a scholarship to Ball State University. His cello teacher there was Joseph Saunders. While at Ball State, he performed as Principal Cellist with the Richmond, Anderson and Muncie Symphonies, the Sinfonia da Camera, and the Festival Strings under Eugene Prokop.
During 1977-78, Samuel was on the adjunct faculty at Anderson College and the summer faculty at Ball State. He then began a two-year tenure as Assistant Principal and Section Cellist with the Florida Symphony. In 1980, he was Solo Cellist with the September Club in Ft. Lauderdale and with the Melton Mustapha Jazz Orchestra while studying with Ingus Naruns in Miami. In 1981, Samuel became the Ft. Wayne Philharmonics Principal Cellist and a member of the Freimann String Quartet, a position he held for ten seasons. During the summers, he was a member of the cello section of the Grant Park Symphony in Chicago from 1983 to 1991.
Samuel was a founding member of the Northeastern Indiana Chamber Festival. He was also a featured soloist with the Ft. Wayne Philharmonic on frequent occasions, performing concertos by Brahms, Beethoven, Haydn, Saint-Saens, Shostakovich, and Tchaikovsky.
Samuel Smith became the first member of the Langroise Trio in 1991 and is an instructor at The College of Idaho. In 1994 Samuel co-founded Chamber Music at Paradise Point and served as Artistic Director. He also serves as Associate Principal Cello with the Boise Philharmonic where he has been featured soloist performing concertos by Shostakovich, Saint-Saens and Barber.
The Langroise Trio keeps a busy schedule of performances throughout the Pacific Northwest, and appeared at the Kennedy Center in 1999. The trio has released two CD's.
Samuel lives with his wife Nancy, and children, George and Betsy in the Treasure Valley.
