The Academic Support Center (ASC) offers peer tutoring assistance to students in all aspects of their academic development. The ASC's emphasis is on the individual student, and his or her personal development in any field of study. We encourage constructive dialogue between the student and the tutors, with the aim of imparting to students academic skills that will improve their performance in all aspects of their academic career and scholarship. Both the tutor and the student are active participants in the tutoring sessions, and the tutors’ ultimate goal is to encourage self-sufficient learning.
The ASC encourages constructive dialogue between student and tutor, with peer tutoring as a two-sided, collaborative process. Thus, it is recommended that students come in prepared for their sessions by bringing in assignment prompts, homework, and other relevant course material, as well as general plans for assistance. The ASC tutors will work with assignments in any stage of completion.
The ASC tutors do not simply edit or proofread students’ work.
Currently, tutors are available to help students in Biology, Chemistry, Spanish, German, Accounting, and Business courses.
If you need help with grammar, punctuation, mechanics, citations, critical reading skills, constructing effective essays, including thesis statements, topic sentences, paragraphs, and conclusions, please contact the Director of ASC; there are tutors available for lessons on these basic elements of reading and writing and to help students practice critical reading and comprehension skills.
