Region I Baseball Tournament Game 6
Lewis-Clark State 2, Albertson 0 (11 innings)
CALDWELL, Idaho - Despite a ten inning shutout performance from left-hander Joey Zubizarreta, a pair of unearned runs in the 11th inning allowed top-ranked Lewis-Clark State to defeat Albertson College, 2-0, in the title game of the NAIA Region I Tournament at Simplot Stadium.
With the win, L-C will move on to next week's Far West Sectional in Azusa, Calif., against Azusa Pacific - beginning Wednesday night.
A two-out bases-loaded walk to Kyle Greene and an infield RBI single from Jesse Roehl was all the Warriors (51-4) could muster on the 85-degree afternoon. ACI should have been out of the inning, as Jessie Mier hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop Casey Oliver, but the potential inning ending double play ball was bobbled, allowing the inning to continue.
The story was Zubizarreta, as the Boise native recorded the longest outing by an ACI (31-17) pitcher since 1998. The junior allowed just four hits, one walk, and had five strikeouts. His longest previous outing this season was four innings, and his career-best was six innings, two years ago.
The Coyotes had a chance to get on the board in the fifth, as Camron Hammond walked, moved to second on a groundball out, and took third on a failed pickoff attempt by L-C starter, Brad Schwartzenbach. However, the big righty got Brian Champ to ground out and coaxed a Kent Bradshaw fly ball to center to end the threat.
L-C nearly took the lead in both the eighth and ninth - leaving a runner at third in the eighth, and leaving runners and second and third in the ninth. Beau Mills nearly won it for the Warriors in the ninth, but his long drive to right was just foul.
Brian Parker got the win for the Warriors, striking out six in three innings of relief - allowing just one hit.
