Swimming Yote Notes - Edition 9
02.01.2010
LAST WEEK: at Pacific – Men (W 95-76), Women (L 119-69)
COMING UP: Idle until NAIA Championships, March 4-6, St. Charles, Mo.
NUMBERS HELP COYOTE MEN PAST PACIFIC: Make it two wins in a row for The College of Idaho men’s swim team, as the Coyotes used overall depth to knock off Pacific University, 95-76, in Forest Grove, Ore., on Saturday morning. Despite winning just 4-of-11 events and not competing in the 200-medley relay, the Yotes did not have an event in which they failed to place either first or second. The key race was the 500-freestyle, as the Coyotes swept the top-three positions, as Nick Young (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS) claimed the win in 5:32.38. Kemp Smith (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS) also had a great swim in the 1,650-free, hitting the NAIA “A” standard with his second-place finish (18:01.47), the third Yote to meet the national mark in the event.
WALKER CAPS GREAT SEASON: The story for the Yotes, however, was Casey Walker (Portland, Ore. / Skyview HS), who won both of his individual events in impressive fashion, and anchored the winning 200-free relay, which had a season-best time of 1:33.82. The sophomore set a new school record in the 100-breaststroke (1:02.28) – hitting the NAIA “A” standard, while improving his top-time in the 100-backstroke (55.42).
LADY YOTES IMPROVE IN FINAL MEET: Although the Lady Yotes dropped a 119-69 decision to Pacific, it was a quality meet for the squad as well. Senior Ali Cabrera (Payette, Idaho / Payette HS) made the most of her final dual with the Yotes, hitting the NAIA “B” standard in the 50-free (26.60), placing second. The lone winner for The C of I was Annie Younggren (La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS), who took home the victory in the 500-free (5:50.25). The team did establish another NAIA “A” standard – as Chrissie Younggren (La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS) hit the mark in a time-trial of the 200-backstroke (2:21.48), setting a school record.
NATIONAL TOP-20: The third NAIA Top-Times list was released by the national office last week, with Casey Walker the lone Coyote individual in the Top-20, ranking 17th in the 200-backstroke. All ten C of I relays, however, made the list, as the Coyote men are ranked No. 12 in the 200 and 800-free, No. 14 in the 400-free, No. 16 in the 400-medley, and No. 17 in the 200-medley. The Lady Yotes rank No. 15 in the 400-medley, No. 16 in the 200 and 400-free, No. 18 in the 800-free, and No. 20 in the 200-medley. Two more Top-20 lists will be released prior to the NAIA Championships – on Feb 2 and Feb. 23.
NATIONAL MARKS (20 Automatic, 11 Bonus Cuts): NAIA “A” (Automatic) – Lucas Hill (Pendelton, Ore. / Pendleton HS) (400-IM, 1,650-free), Casey Walker (100-back, 100-breast, 200-free, 200-back, 200-breast, 400-IM), Nick Young (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS) (1,650-free), Kemp Smith (1,650-free), Men’s Relay (200-free, 200-medley, 400-free), Chrissie Younggren (200-back, 400-IM), Women’s Relay (200-free, 200-medley, 400-free, 400-medley, 800-free); NAIA “B” (Bonus Cut) – Hill (500-free), Nikolai Vidin (Eastwood NSW, Australia / Epping HS) (50-free, 100-free), Walker (100-free, 200-IM), Annie Younggren (100-free, 200-free, 1,650-free), C.
