JUNE 5, 2002 SCHOLAR-ATHLETES ABOUND AT ALBERTSON
19
student-athletes earn highest honor in NAIA and USCSA CALDWELL,
Idaho – The final numbers for the 2001-02 athletic season are in, and it
proves once again that The College of Idaho student-athletes are definitely
that – student-athletes. 19
different Coyote competitors earned Academic All-American honors during the
season, one of the top numbers nationally for a school not competing in
football. On the
heels of a third-place finish at the NAIA College World Series, four Coyote
baseball players earned Academic All-America honors, with two others just
missing the cut. The squad was
one of the 12 intercollegiate squads at Albertson which maintained a team
GPA of 3.00 or better. Other
sports with multiple scholar-athletes included women’s basketball (3),
men’s basketball (2), men’s soccer (2), women’s soccer (2), volleyball
(2), and women’s skiing (2). Carly
Merkel (volleyball), Jeannie Thompson and Megan Henrichs (women’s
basketball), and Kris Cox (Men’s Basketball) also earned
All-District honors in the Verizon / CoSIDA Academic All-America contest. Last
year, 25 Coyote competitors earned Academic All-America honors, which was
second in the entire NAIA.
