WOMEN’S SOCCER (5-2, 6-4): Win streak hits four with sweep of Eastern, three tough battles this week

LAST WEEK: Defeated Eastern Oregon, 2-1; Defeated Eastern Oregon, 4-0.

COMING UP: vs. Northwest Nazarene, Tuesday, 4 p.m.; at Concordia, Friday, 4 p.m. (PDT); at Evergreen, Saturday, 1 p.m. (PDT)

WIN STREAK AT FOUR: It is not often that a collegiate soccer team plays back-to-back games against the same opponent on consecutive days.  In retrospect, the Albertson women’s soccer team does not mind, as the Lady ‘Yotes ran their win streak to four games with a pair of victories over Eastern Oregon.  With the wins, Albertson has its longest winning streak since the third game of the 1990 season, and its second-longest streak in the 14-year history of the program.

MORE ON THE WINS: On the road in La Grande, Friday, the two teams played a defensive-minded first half.  However, midway through the final period, the Coyotes broke through.  Chelsea Stevens (Bend, Ore. / BYU Idaho) got Albertson on the board in the 63rd minute, with Becky Robertson (Othello, Wash. / Columbia Basin CC) adding the eventual game-winner five minutes later off an Alyssa Latham (Walla Walla, Wash. / Walla Walla CC) cross, as Eastern scored with 13 seconds left to make it interesting.  Back in Caldwell on Saturday, Latham put on a clinic against the Mountaineers, scoring three goals and assisting on another.  Both Stevens and Robertson assisted on first half goals, while Wendy Ross (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) scored the ‘Yotes final goal.

CONSECUTIVE POINT STREAK: With her big explosion on Saturday, Alyssa Latham leads the team with eight goals and eight assists.  She is second in the Cascade Conference in assists, and fifth in goals scored.  What is more impressive, however, is the fact that the junior has recorded at least a goal or an assist in the Coyotes last seven games.

ANOTHER STREAK: Keepers Danielle Dorsch (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) and Jessica Bernard (Jupiter, Fla. / Clearwater Valley HS) recorded the Coyotes second shutout of the season Saturday against Eastern.  For Dorsch, she did not allow a goal during the weekend, extending her consecutive minutes streak without allowing a goal to nearly 217-in-a-row.  The freshman ranks fourth in the conference in goals against average (1.94).

UNCHARTED WATERS: Not since 1993 has a Lady ‘Yote soccer team won six games in a season.  In fact, only the inaugural team in 1989, when the College of Idaho won eight games, has won more times than this year’s squad.  During the 14-year history of the program, only the 1989 and 1995 teams finished above the .500 mark, with the 1992 and 1993 teams at .500.  Conversely, not since the 1996 season has the Coyotes posted a winning percentage higher than .300 percent.

REGIONAL RANKINGS: The fourth regional rankings by the NAIA Region I coaches were released Monday and remained status-quo.  Second-ranked Simon Fraser remains at the top, with No. 16 ranked Concordia at No. 2.  Rounding out the top-five are Western Baptist, Rocky Mountain, and Carroll.

INJURY BUG: Albertson played the weekend set against Eastern Oregon without the services of senior defender Kristi Dalsoglio (Boise, Idaho / Meridian HS).  The All-Conference player missed both games with a foot injury which is taking time to heal.  Junior Joan Blankenship (Hillsboro, Ore. / Glencoe HS) has taken Dalsoglio’s spot in the starting line-up.

HOW FAR HAVE THE COYOTES COME?: A four-game win streak, six wins this season – those are nice numbers.  But the question remains, how can Albertson compete against the top teams in the league?  This week will go a long way in seeing how the Coyotes have developed as a team.  Tuesday, Northwest Nazarene comes calling for their lone visit to Symms Field.  The NCAA Division II Crusaders (3-6) are going in the opposite direction as the Lady ‘Yotes, having dropped their past six games since defeating Albertson, 5-0, on September 2.  In fact, NNU went four consecutive games without scoring a goal, albeit against stiff Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams.  Lacey Rasmussen scored a hat trick for NNU in the win earlier this season, extending their win streak against Albertson to ten.  It’s then off to meet conference-leading Concordia on Friday afternoon in Portland.  The Cavaliers (6-0, 7-2) have won seven consecutive games since losing a pair in Southern California to begin the season.  Grant Landy’s squad has outscored CCC opponents 22-3 this season, and has won eight straight against the Lady ‘Yotes.  Missy Clark is the go-to player for CU, leading the team with 11 goals in 2002.  The road trip ends Saturday at Evergreen, in a crucial playoff positioning battle.  The Geoducks (4-3, 4-6) are battling with Warner Pacific, Albertson, and Southern Oregon for the final two spots in the Cascade Conference tournament.  Led by sophomore Tiffany Fenster (eight goals), Evergreen just completed a sweep of Oregon Tech and Southern on the road.  The Olympia, Wash. based squad holds a 9-4 all-time advantage on the Coyotes, with the two teams splitting a pair of games last season.

AROUND THE CONFERENCE: Warner Pacific continues to be the surprise of the Cascade Conference.  The Knights swept their two matches last week, defeating Evergreen in overtime and stopping Cascade, 5-1 – and have just one game this week, at home against Western Baptist.  Speaking of Western, the Warriors ended their 11-game non-conference losing streak last Monday, defeating Northwest Nazarene, 4-2.  KeriAnn Lawson won regional player-of-the-week honors, and leads the loop with 14 goals this season.  Southern Oregon has fallen on hard times, losing four straight games, including two at home.  Same goes for Oregon Tech, who is the only winless team remaining in the conference – with their three non-conference wins coming against second-tier California Pacific Conference teams.  Injuries continue plague Eastern Oregon, as Colleen Fagan’s squad had five players miss the Albertson series with bumps and bruises.

MEN’S SOCCER (3-1, 5-2): Coyotes rebound with road sweep, Michaelson named Regional Player-of-the-Week

LAST WEEK: Won at Cascade, 3-2 (2 OT); Won at Concordia, 3-2.

COMING UP: at Northwest Nazarene, Tuesday, 3 p.m.; vs. Warner Pacific, Friday, 4 p.m.; vs. Western Baptist, Saturday, 1 p.m.

CONFERENCE ROAD WIN STREAK AT NINE: The road trip has become a work of art for the Albertson men’s soccer team within the Cascade Conference as of late.  By stopping both Cascade and Concordia last weekend by 3-2 margins, the Coyotes extended their loop road win streak to nine-in-a-row, dating back to October of 2000.  During that time, Albertson has outscored its opponents on unfriendly turf, 24-9, and won six one-goal games.

MICHAELSON NAMED PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK: Knocking home the game- winner has become a common thing in the repetoire of forward Coe Michaelson (East Wenatchee, Wash. / Northwest Nazarene).  Michaelson tallied the golden goal in the win over Cascade, then came back with the desicive goal in the victory over Concordia.  Throw in three assists, and you have the Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I Player-of-the-Week.  For the senior, it is the fourth time in his career that he has received the honor.

THE COMEBACK KIDS: Call them what you wish, but the Coyotes needed to rally on two separate occasions to pull out the victory Friday at Cascade.  After falling behind in the 20th minute, freshman Tyler Seaman (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) scored his first collegiate goal, taking a pass from fellow freshman John Mitchell (Boise, Idaho / Boise State) in the 25th minute.  After the T-Birds went back ahead in the second half, Roger Aguilar (Payette, Idaho / Payette HS) scored his sixth goal of the year on a cross from Coe Michaelson.  Heading into overtime, senior keeper Jake Steele (Salt Lake City, Utah / Viewmont HS) was peppered by five shots on goal, but the two-time All-American was up to the task, setting up Michaelson’s heroics.  Aguilar had space on the near sideline and chipped a perfect cross to Michaelson in the box for the flick winner to the left post.

COYOTES END CONCORDIA RUN: Heading into Saturday, Concordia had won four matches in a row – but ran into the road warriors.  After four goals were tallied in the first 22 minutes of the contest, the defenses kicked in, not allowing a counter until Coe Michaelson won the game in the 78th minute.  After the Cavaliers scored on a penalty kick just five minutes into the game, it took Albertson three minutes to tie the score.  Michaelson fired a hard pass into the box, where Drake Jakovac (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) redirected the ball into the net to tie the score.  The ‘Yotes took the lead for a moment, when Ryan Abo (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) chipped a ball down the far sideline to Michaelson, who found Jason Southward (Hailey, Idaho / Wood River HS) streaking to the goal for the 2-1 lead.  After Concordia tied the score, 56 minutes would fly by before reserve Dustin Crim (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) found Michaelson alone in front of the net for the winner.

WINS, DESPITE THE INJURY BUG: Albertson played the weekend without the services of two of its starting defenders.  Brad Brooks (Meridian, Idaho / Meridian HS) sat out with a bad knee, while freshman Shane Carmody (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) is still nursing a severely strained groin.  Head coach John Calpin was very pleased with the play of Drake Jakovac, who stepped up in the two games, along with true freshman Sam Reed (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS).

REGIONAL RANKING: With the two wins, coupled with a pair of losses by Westminster, Albertson has moved back up to No. 2 in the NAIA Region I rankings.  The Coyotes trail only Simon Fraser, who was ranked No. 14 in last week’s NAIA national poll.  Westminster fell to No. 3, followed by Concordia and Evergreen.

THE IRONMAN: Cal Ripken and Lou Gehrig were noted for their almost mythical consecutive games played streaks in baseball.  The Albertson men’s soccer team has one of its own, which may surprise the average fan.  Jake Steele has been a mainstay in goal for the Coyotes for the past four years.  However, the senior has never left the box during his illustrious career.  All 6,809 minutes in the 73 games played through the 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 seasons have seen Steele in goal.

BACK IN THE VALLEY: Five of the next six games the Coyotes play will be in the Treasure Valley, beginning Tuesday at Northwest Nazarene.  The Crusaders (1-9) have struggled mightily this season, seeing head coach Stefan Mangeac resign not even a month into the season.  Jeff Glassnep has taken over the reigns and NNU broke through in the win column last week with a shutout of Walla Walla College.  Although the team is led by Greg Kester’s three goals, squad has been outscored 35-9 this season.  Albertson holds a 38-10-2 all-time lead in the series, and has won the last seven games in a row.  Friday begins a string of four consecutive Cascade Conference home games, as Warner Pacific comes to Symms Field.  The Knights (1-3, 2-6-1) dropped both games on their road swing to Northwest and Evergreen last weekend, and are sitting in a three-way logjam at the bottom of the conference race.  Last season’s leading scorer, Aaron Marvin, has scored three goals this season for WPC.  The Coyotes have won the past six meetings between the school’s, but trail the all-time series, seven games to six, with one tie.  Saturday, the Cascade Conference scoring machine makes its annual appearance, as Western Baptist heads to the pitch.  The 2001 CCC Player-of-the-Year, Taurai Daka, has put up unbelievable numbers this season, but the Warriors (1-3, 5-5-2) have struggled at times.  Daka has scored 15 of the 22 Western goals in 2002, leading the conference in that category.  The problem has been defense, as the Warriors have allowed 27 goals this season.  Albertson swept the season series last year and holds a 14-11 all-time advantage.

AROUND THE CONFERENCE: Evergreen ended a drought dating back to 1993 with a 4-3 win over Western Baptist.  The Geoducks have now won four games in a row, equaling their school record.  Cascade was on the losing side of two tough games – the 3-2 overtime loss to the Coyotes, and a 1-0 barnburner with Concordia.  Northwest continues to play well, shutting out Warner Pacific, before dropping a tight 2-1 game to Western.  This week, Evergreen heads to Concordia with first-place on the line, while Northwest travels to Cascade to try and stay in the title hunt.

VOLLEYBALL (2-4, 5-9): Injuries decimate Coyotes, lose back-to-back road games, big homestand begins Friday

LAST WEEK: Lost at Northwest, 3-0; lost at Evergreen, 3-2.

COMING UP: at Northwest Nazarene, Tuesday, 7 p.m.; vs. Cascade, Friday, 7 p.m.; vs. Warner Pacific, Saturday, 7 p.m.

FIRST TIPTON, NOW PRICE: Heading into the 2002 season, all eyes were on the two returning All-Region seniors that were to lead the Albertson volleyball club.  Last week, however, injuries dealt a blow to both players.  Three-time All-Region outside hitter Kristyn Price (Bellevue, Idaho / Wood River HS) severely sprained her right ankle in practice on Wednesday and did not make the trip to Seattle for the weekend set.  X-Rays on the all-time leader in kills were negative, but a time-table on her return in unclear.  She joins fellow senior, Katy Tipton (Ontario, Ore. / Ontario HS) on the injured list.  Tipton has been unable to play back-to-back games this season because of pain in her lower back.

THREE-GAME LOSING SKID: The road trip to Seattle was not kind to the Lady ‘Yotes, as Albertson dropped matches to a surging Northwest team and a young Evergreen squad – running their losing streak to three games.  The Coyotes did not come out focused against Northwest, dropping the match in straight sets.  In fact, the .070 attack percentage was the lowest so far this season.  An injured Tipton led the way with eight kills.  Head coach Liz Mendiola remarked “"We didn't pass very well tonight.  Northwest served very well (11 aces), and it seemed every break, every tough dig, it went their way."  The next night in Olympia, Evergreen rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Albertson in five sets, winning the final game, 15-11.  Kristen Bailey (Fountain Green, Utah / Snow JC) led the team with 17 kills, but the Coyotes could not overcome the fact that Tipton and Price were not on in uniform.

A PAIR OF FIRSTS ON THE ROAD: For both Northwest and Evergreen, it was a weekend of firsts against Albertson.  For Northwest, it was the first time that the Eagles had defeated Albertson in school history, a span of 12 games.  For Evergreen, just a second-year program, its first-ever win against Albertson is a statement for their program, considering the Coyotes were at the NAIA Championships in 2000.

BAILEY PLAYS BIG: The big performance by Kristen Bailey against Evergreen was definitely her break-out game.  “I was really pleased with the way that Bailey stepped up against Evergreen,” said Mendiola.  “She tried to give us a spark we needed to rise to the challenge.  Unfortunately, others were unable to step up in the fourth and fifth games when needed for us to win.”  On the season, Bailey is averaging 2.2 kills a game and 0.8 blocks a game, which is good enough for ninth in the Cascade Conference.

FRESHMEN IMPROVEMENT:
The Evergreen game was also a chance for freshmen Fran Hartman (Lakeview, Ore. / Lakeview HS) and Annie Rice (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) to get their first significant playing time, and the duo responded.  Hartman had a career-high 14 kills, while Rice had six service aces and a team-high 14 digs.  The six aces are the most by an Albertson player this season.

REGIONAL RANKINGS: With the two losses, Albertson has dropped completely out of this weeks NAIA Region I rankings.  With its win over Southern Oregon, Concordia has claimed the top spot in the poll, with SOU falling back into second.  A trio of Frontier Conference schools (Montana-Western, Montana Tech, Carroll) round out the top-five.  Northwest is in sixth-place, followed by Oregon Tech, Rocky Mountain, Lewis-Clark State, and Western Baptist.

HOME SWEET HOME: Following Tuesday’s van ride to Nampa for the first of two meetings with Northwest Nazarene, the Coyotes will play their next nine games in the friendly confines of the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  Included in that set is the 2002 Blocktoberfest Tournament and five Cascade Conference matches, including a rematch with No. 19 ranked Southern Oregon.

THREE-GAME WEEK AHEAD: Being able to sleep in their own beds for just about the next month, the Lady ‘Yotes will begin a ten-game stretch in the Valley with a Tuesday non-conference tilt with Northwest Nazarene.  The Crusaders (6-5) off to a good start and are riding a two-game win streak – with both wins coming on the road at Humboldt State and Western Oregon, two very difficult places to play.  Last year, NNU swept the two-game series with Albertson and leads the all-time series, 50-35, dating back to the AIAW days.  Louise Free has been a Coyote killer in the past and this year is no different – Free leads NNU with a 3.7 kill per game average and 1.3 blocks per game.  This weekend, Albertson begins the aforementioned nine-game homestand with a Friday match against Cascade.  The Thunderbirds (0-7, 3-9) are still searching for that first Cascade Conference win, almost two years since their last.  Cascade did not field a team in 2001, and Tina Wagner has an improving bunch that will definitely compete.  Albertson has never lost to the T-Birds in ten previous meetings.  Saturday, Warner Pacific comes calling on the Activities Center.  The Knights (2-5, 2-7) are a much improved team from last season and have been playing well of late – including sweeps of Evergreen and Cascade.  Leading the way for WPC is Jo’Lene Bogle, an outside hitter that is averaging 3.3 kills per game.  The Knights are also looking for their first-ever win against the Coyotes, having lost the previous five meetings.

INSIDE THE CONFERENCE: As mentioned earlier, Concordia stopped Southern Oregon in three sets to stake claim to the top spot in the Cascade Conference.  With wins over SOU and Oregon Tech, the Cavalier consecutive CCC victory total is now at 55 in a row.  OIT surprised some on Friday night, going to the C.E. Jeffers Center and defeating Western Baptist in four.  Add Northwest to the group of teams to watch.  The Eagles swept aside Albertson and Eastern Oregon, vaulting themselves into third-place in the loop standings.  Eastern also got their first two wins of the season, stopping Whitman in five and defeating Evergreen in four.
