GENERAL ATHLETICS NEWS:
PRIZES STILL UNCLAIMED FROM COYOTE OPEN: The Albertson athletic department would like to thank the 180 golfers and 115 businesses that took part in this years Coyote Open last Friday at River Bend Golf Course. Everyone who participated or donated their time had a blast on the blustery day. The following are the winners from the tournament (a list of raffle ticket prizes that went unclaimed can be found online at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/2002Open.htm).
GOLFERS WIN FALL INVITATIONAL: The Albertson
men’s and women’s golf team competed in the Albertson College Fall Invitational
on September 25, and both squads excelled.
The men’s team captured the team title, outdistancing themselves from
Northwest Nazarene and Treasure Valley CC.
Sophomore John Bideganeta took home
medalist honors, shooting a 1-over 73 on the blustery afternoon. On the women’s side, the Coyotes placed
second, behind Boise State. Roslyn Folk and Sarah Gallant had the top two
rounds for the Coyotes, with Folk shooting an 81 and Gallant an 83.
LAST
WEEK: Won at Northwest Nazarene, 1-0 (OT); Defeated
Warner Pacific, 3-1; Defeated Western Baptist, 4-1.
COMING
UP: at Walla Walla, Tuesday, 3 p.m.; vs. Cascade,
Friday, 4 p.m.; vs. Concordia, Saturday, 3 p.m.
ON A ROLL: In picking up three victories this past week, the
Albertson men’s soccer team ran its win streak to five, remaining tied for the
Cascade Conference lead. Even more
impressive was the crowds at the two home contests on Friday and Saturday, with
well over 300 fans at each of the two games – and the Coyotes did not let their
backers down.
SOUTHWARD EARNS REGIONAL
AWARD: It was an easy choice for the
Cascade Conference fall sports committee to select Jason Southward (Hailey,
Idaho / Wood River CC) as this week’s Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I
Player-of-the-Week. The sophomore was a
one-man wrecking crew for the ‘Yotes, scoring game-winning goals against
Northwest Nazarene and Western Baptist, knocking two home against Warner
Pacific, and tying a school record with four goals against WBC. The forward leads Albertson with ten goals
scored. It is the second-time in his
career that he has received the honor.
A STRUGGLE, BUT A WIN: Head coach John Calpin said it best in the
Idaho Press Tribune – “This was a typical Albertson-NNU game.” A 1-10 record by the Crusaders did not
matter to them, as the hosts battled the Coyotes to a scoreless tie in
regulation. Albertson also lost senior
forward Coe Michaelson (East Wenatchee, Wash / Northwest Nazarene) to
a debatable red card call in the second half.
However, a Tyler Seaman (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) cross
in the box to the waiting Jason Southward put an end to the misery. NNU held a 22-17 shot advantage, but the
Coyotes held the advantage on the scoreboard.
WIN WITHOUT CAPTAIN: Even without Coe Michaelson (serving his ejection
suspension), the Coyotes scored a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes to
defeat Warner Pacific, 3-1, on Friday afternoon. Jason Southward opened the scoring in the eighth minute, taking a
nice combination from Roger Aguilar (Payette, Idaho / Payette HS) and
John Mitchell (Boise, Idaho / Boise State) to the goal. Tyler Seaman then broke a 1-1 tie in the
75th minute, flicking home a Southward pass.
Southward then put the Knights away with a breakaway goal after Warner
Pacific tried to press forward. It was
the seventh-straight win over WPC.
WESTERN-KILLER: The Western Baptist squad has been seeing Jason
Southward in their sleep for the past 13 months. Yes, the sophomore scored all four goals in the 4-1 victory
Saturday afternoon, but the Southward-Warrior combination goes deeper. As a freshman, Southward scored two goals in
a 4-0 victory in Salem, only to up that last October, scoring all three goals
in a 3-1 win in Caldwell. This time,
the 6-5 forward got help in the form Nick Zollinger (Pocatello, Idaho
/ Century HS), who put a pair of perfect passes on goal for Southward to
put away.
MICHAELSON ONE ASSIST AWAY: With an assist in the Saturday win over Western, Coe
Michaelson inched closer to the all-time assist record. The senior now has 34 career helpers, one
behind the record set by Matt Blazek from 1995-98. He already holds the single-season record, recording 14 assists
in both 2000 and 2001.
REGIONAL RANKING: With the three wins, Albertson has maintained its
No. 2 spot in the NAIA Region I rankings.
The Coyotes trail only No. 13 ranked Simon Fraser, who was idle this
past week. Concordia moved up to No. 3, followed by Westminster and Evergreen.
DEFENSE
KICKING IT UP A NOTCH: With injuries
taking a pair of everyday starters out of the line-up, the Coyote defense has
went through transformation over the past couple of weeks. With a nagging groin injury keeping redshirt
freshman Shane Carmody (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) off the field, and a possible season-ending knee
injury to sophomore Brad
Brooks (Meridian, Idaho /
Meridian HS), the ‘Yotes have had to
try and find a new combination. Led by
the leadership of sophomore Drake
Jakovac (Boise, Idaho / Timberline
HS), new players have quietly worked themselves
into roles in the system. Tyler Seaman,
John Mitchell, Dustin
Crim (Boise, Idaho /
Centennial HS), Skiff Larson (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS), Nate
Burns (Boise, Idaho / Capital
HS), Sam
Reed (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle
HS), and John Reinschmidt (Mountain
Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS) each
have excelled in stopping opponent attacks.
THE
WOLVES IN ONION COUNTRY: Tuesday, the
Coyotes head west for a return match with Walla Walla College, the
Seventh-Day Adventist institution in southeast Washington state. Last season, the Wolves (1-10) were
dismantled by the ‘Yotes, 13-1, in Caldwell.
The win by Albertson was the second-largest victory margin in school
history and was one goal shy of the school record. This year, Walla Walla is definitely improved, although their
record does not reflect the play on the field.
WWC lost all four meetings with Cascade Conference schools – 13-0 and
6-2 to Evergreen, 4-1 to Western Baptist, and 5-1 to Northwest.
PORTLAND
SCHOOLS IN TOWN SEEKING REVENGE: A
big sports weekend on the Albertson campus includes a pair of men’s soccer
encounters. The Coyotes host Cascade on Friday, two weeks after defeating the same squad, 3-2, in
overtime. Winning at Symms Field is
nothing new to the Thunderbirds (2-4, 3-8), as Cascade took two meetings from
the ‘Yotes in Caldwell last year, including a 1-0 victory in the Cascade
Conference tournament. Chris Langford
is the go-to player for the T-Birds, leading the team with four goals and three
assists. Saturday, Dan Birkey brings Concordia to town, hoping to vault over the Coyotes in the
regional rankings. The Cavaliers (5-1,
9-4) are deadlocked with Albertson atop the conference standings, having won
6-of-7, with the lone loss coming to the ‘Yotes. Joe Beytebiere leads the Cavs with ten goals, with Justan Wolvert
leading the Cascade Conference with 13 assists. Concordia won last season’s battle in Caldwell, 4-3.
AROUND
THE CONFERENCE: Evergreen and Concordia
played one of the best matches this season in conference play, as CU stopped
the Geoducks, 2-1 in two overtimes, with the winning goal coming in the 109th
minute. While both teams fell to
Albertson, Western
Baptist stopped Warner Pacific last Tuesday, moving Western into a three-way tie
for fourth-place and leaving Warner in the cellar. Northwest
has dropped three straight, including losses
to Concordia and Cascade.

LAST
WEEK: Lost at Northwest Nazarene, 3-0; defeated Cascade,
3-0; defeated Warner Pacific, 3-0.
COMING
UP: vs. Eastern Oregon, Thursday, 7 p.m.; host
2002 Blocktoberfest Tournament – Friday vs. Westminster, 10 a.m.; vs. College
of Southern Idaho (exhibition), 4 p.m.; Saturday vs. Montana-Western, 4 p.m.; vs.
Victoria, 8 p.m.
PRICE RETURNS TO LINE-UP, WINS FOLLOW: After
missing last weekend’s action with a sprained right ankle, senior Kristyn
Price (Bellevue, Idaho / Wood River HS) was back in the line-up for the Coyotes three matches last
week. Despite dropping a three-game
match as surging Northwest Nazarene, Albertson responded with back-to-back
sweeps of conference foes Cascade and Warner Pacific, ending a four-game losing
streak.
MORE ON THE WINS: Friday
night against Cascade, Price belted her way to 18 kills in the 30-21, 30-18,
30-18 victory. Amanda Basañez (Elko,
Nev. / College of Southern Idaho) also had a big night, recording 37
assists and was a perfect 6-for-6 on attack attempts. The next night, Price added 15 more kills, while Basañez added 34
assists and six service aces. In the
six games played, the Lady ‘Yote opponents combined for a .019 attack
percentage.
ACES AWAY: In the two matches this
weekend, Albertson combined for 27 service aces. Sophomore Jennifer Luchini (Cataldo, Idaho / Kellogg
HS) had nine aces in the two games, with Laura Solberg (Castle
Rock, Wash. / Castle Rock HS) recording five aces in Friday’s match with
Cascade.
NNU MAKES IT THREE STRAIGHT: The
trend from last year in the Canyon County rivalry proved true again in 2002, as
Northwest Nazarene defeated Albertson for the third-consecutive time. Kristyn Price had 12 kills, while freshman Annie
Rice (Meridian, Idaho / Eagle HS) added nine kills. For what its worth, NNU defeated Seattle
Pacific on Thursday and took NCAA Division II Western Washington to five games
on Saturday.
MANN DIGGIN’ IT: After
seeing sporatic action as a freshman, Kahli Mann (Nampa, Idaho /
Skyview HS) has excelled as part of the Coyotes regular rotation. Mann ranks third on the team with 21 aces,
and is second on the squad with 127 digs, more than two per game. She has had five double-digit dig nights,
including a career-high 15 against Concordia on Sept. 21.
RECORD BOOK: Both Kristyn Price and Katy
Tipton (Ontario, Ore. / Ontario HS) are inching their way closer to
school records. For Price, she is just
12 aces behind the school-record of 191 set by Jesse Evett. The senior now has 1,440 digs in her career,
155 behind Brecia Gamett’s school mark.
At her current pace, it would be sometime during the conference
tournament when that mark would be broken.
Same goes for the 2,000 kill club – Price broke the 1,800 kill mark on
Saturday night and now needs 198 kills to become the first ‘Yote to 2K. Tipton is now 52 kills away from the elusive
1,000 mark – which would make her the fourth Albertson player to reach that
mark
REGIONAL RANKINGS: With
despite a 2-1 week, the Lady ‘Yotes remain outside this week’s NAIA Region I
rankings. Concordia remains in the top
spot, with Southern Oregon right on their heals. A trio of Frontier Conference schools (Montana-Western, Carroll,
Montana Tech) round out the top-five.
Oregon Tech leads the next five, followed by Lewis-Clark State, Rocky
Mountain, Northwest, and Western Baptist.
EASTERN
ON ITS WAY: Only Albertson and Eastern Oregon have not completed their first portion of the double
round-robin schedule, with the travel partners meeting Thursday night. The Mountaineers (2-6, 3-7), whom qualified
for the Cascade Conference tournament last year, did not get off to a good
start this season with new head coach Ryan Platt at the helm. However, behind hitter Kaki McLean (3.2
kills/gm.), last week’s Cascade Conference Hitter-of-the-Week, Eastern is
beginning to make some noise. Albertson
won all three meetings last year, 13-in-a-row dating back to 1998, and hold a
17-3 all-time advantage.
INSIDE
THE CONFERENCE: The wheels fell off the Northwest train this past weekend, as both Southern Oregon and Oregon
Tech brought the Eagles back to reality. The two homestanding Oregon schools stopped
Northwest in three games, ending a five-match win streak. Evergreen, coming off its upset of Albertson last weekend,
was dealt the same blow, although the Geoducks did win a game at OIT. Concordia
extended its conference win streak to 55 with
a blanking of Western
Baptist.
Despite losing all six games on its eastern jaunt, Cascade took care of Walla Walla College in four to win their fourth match of the
season. Warner Pacific also won for the
first time at Eastern Oregon, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to take the
Mountaineers in five.
BLOCKTOBERFEST
PREVIEW: Albertson once again
hosts its annual Blocktoberfest Tournament this Friday and Saturday. Games begin at 8 a.m. on both days, with six
other teams headed to Caldwell for a full slate of action. Along with the Coyotes and Eastern Oregon,
three Frontier Conference schools, an NAIA independent, and a top junior
college program will square off. Montana-Western is the top Frontier Conference team in the tournament,
having begun an 11-game win streak with a victory over Albertson at the
Whitworth Invitational. The Bulldogs
(14-8) took the 2001 Blocktoberfest title and holds a 6-2 all-time advantage
over the Coyotes. On the flip side, Westminster has struggled this season, losing their first 13
matches of the season. The Griffins
(1-14) picked up their first win of the season last weekend, stopping Great
Falls in four, but have lost all nine previous meetings with Albertson, the
last being in 1999. A big question mark
is the University of Victoria, the lone NAIA Region I independent. New head coach Kiet Nguyen saw the Vikes
(0-8) lose all four matches at the Concordia Tournament and Montana-Western
Tournaments in September, their only action of the season. Albertson defeated UVic in their lone
meeting, that taking place in last season’s Blocktoberfest. The lone team the Lady ‘Yotes do not meet is
Montana Tech, another solid Frontier Conference team. The Orediggers (15-10) have been ranked in
the Top-5 of the Region I for most of the season. The other team in the tournament is the College of Southern Idaho, who will play four games that count in their
standings, but are exhibitions for the rest.
The Golden Eagles (17-4) have won seven NJCAA National Championships and
may be the best team in the entire tournament field.
MORE INFORMATION ON THE LADY
‘YOTES: For game stories, statistics, and
information regarding the Albertson volleyball program, head to the official
site of Lady ‘Yote volleyball: www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/vball.htm.
LAST WEEK: Defeated Northwest Nazarene, 4-3 (OT); lost at
Concordia, 7-0; lost at Evergreen, 5-1.
COMING UP: vs. Western
Baptist, Friday, 2 p.m.; vs. Cascade, Saturday, 3 p.m.
THE HIGH POINT: In a week filled with ups and downs, the Albertson
women’s soccer team pulled off what may have been the biggest victory in its
14-year history, a 4-3 win over NCAA Division II Northwest Nazarene. With the victory, the Lady ‘Yotes tied a
school-record with their fifth-consecutive victory, and ended a five-year
drought against the Crusaders.
ENDING THE STREAK: Northwest Nazarene had
won nine matches in-a-row against the Coyotes and jumped out to a 1-0 lead just
five minutes into the game. However,
Albertson responded in the second half, as Becky Robertson (Othello, Wash. /
Columbia Basin CC) put a perfect through-ball to Alyssa Latham (Walla Walla, Wash. /
Walla Walla CC) to tie the score. The duo would
then flip-flop in the 75th minute, as Latham’s cross would find Robertson at
the back post to give the ‘Yotes the lead.
NNU would counter a minute later, but the Coyotes weren’t through, as
Latham again put a perfect cross to the back post, this time headed home by Chelsea Stevens (Bend, Ore. / BYU-Idaho) with three minutes
left. NNU took advantage of three
corners in the final minute, converting with 43 seconds left to send the game
to overtime. OT was short-lived, as
Latham found Heidi Pitman (Bishop, Calif. / Bishop Union HS) in the box and her
flick ended the Coyotes perils against their rival.
PITMAN WITH THE DRAMATICS (AGAIN): The golden goal has
become old hat for sophomore Heidi Pitman during the past two seasons. Of the four career goals she has scored, two
of them have been game winners, both coming in overtime.
LATHAM BREAKS RECORD: With three assists
against NNU and another against Evergreen on Saturday, junior Alyssa Latham has
broken the Albertson single-season record for assists. The previous record of 11 was set in 1993 by
Kristine Halter (Jones). Her three
assist explosion was the third-highest single-game total in school history, as
Katie Wagner recorded five and Halter recorded four in a record-setting 15-0
victory over Western Baptist on Oct. 22, 1993.
Latham’s 13 assists leads the Cascade Conference, and her nine goals
place her in sixth-place in that category.
THE LOW POINT: If a soccer game was just 35 minutes, Albertson
would have been jumping for joy. Facing
No. 14 ranked Concordia, the Coyotes played a scoreless two-thirds of the first
half before the bubble burst. Four
goals in a ten minute stretch put the game out of reach, and for the first time
in nine games, the ‘Yotes were shutout, 7-0, by the Cavs. It was their ninth-consecutive loss to
Concordia.
COYOTES CAN’T DIG OUT CLAMS: The battle for
third-place in the loop was pretty even through 80 minutes, before Evergreen
scored three goals in the latter stages to put away the ‘Yotes, 5-1. The Geoducks led 2-0 before Becky Robertson
volleyed home an Alyssa Latham shot that deflected off the Clam keeper in the
73rd minute. However, a foul in the box
in the 80th minute gave Evergreen a penalty kick which they converted, opening
the path to victory.
DALSOGLIO RETURNS: After missing the two
home contests against Eastern Oregon the previous weekend, defender Kristi Dalsoglio (Boise, Idaho / Meridian
HS) returned
to the line-up five minutes into the Northwest Nazarene match. The senior has been battling a nagging foot
injury all season, but played through the pain this week.
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE: Symms Field has been a
kind place to the Lady ‘Yotes this season – Albertson has won all four games
played on their home sod. To their
advantage, five of the final seven games of the season will be played in
Caldwell, including two games this weekend.
Friday, Western Baptist continues their march to the playoffs, trying to
defeat Albertson for the 14th consecutive time. The Warriors (8-1, 9-3) are off to their best start in school
history, thanks in part to the scoring efforts of KeriAnn Lawson (19 goals, 11
assists) and Sarah Riojas (15 goals, 12 assists), who lead the most productive
offense in the Cascade Conference.
Lawson scored three goals earlier in the season in Western’s 6-1 win
over the Coyotes in Salem. Saturday,
Albertson will be looking for the season sweep of Cascade. The
Thunderbirds (1-8-1, 1-10-1) tied Southern Oregon, 1-1, on Saturday, facing 50
shots, but only allowing one goal to sneak through. Despite the lopsided record, Cascade has one of the better
sweepers in the league in Rochelle Diggins.
The Lady ‘Yotes defeated the T-Birds, 4-1, earlier this year.
NOTE GAME TIME: On Friday, the Albertson women will open up a
doubleheader of action at 2 p.m. against Western, with the men meeting Cascade
at 4 p.m. Saturday, things are the
opposite, with the men’s team hosting Concordia at 1 p.m., with the ladies
meeting Cascade at 3 p.m.
AROUND THE CONFERENCE: Warner Pacific remains tied with
Albertson for the final spot in the conference post-season tournament, but has
nearly a two-week layoff before Friday’s match with Oregon Tech. On the topic of OIT, the Owls broke through
in the win column, stopping Cascade, 4-1, on Friday. They then followed that match with a tough 3-1 loss to Western
Baptist, a game which was deadlocked until the 86th minute. Eastern Oregon continues its struggles, losing both games on its
latest road trip. The Mountaineers have
been outscored 57-7 this season. With
their victories this week, Concordia has now won ten consecutive matches, while Evergreen has won
four-in-a-row. Those two teams will
lock horns this Friday in Olympia.
