GENERAL
ATHLETICS NEWS:
MERRY CHRISTMAS: From the Albertson Athletic
Department to you, we wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
ALPINE
SKIING:
COMING UP: Northwest Conference Qualifier #1,
Brundage Mountain, January 10-12.
WOMEN’S SKIERS RANKED NO. 6 IN
NATION: The
preseason rankings have been released by the United States Ski and Snowboard
Association, and the Albertson women’s alpine program was ranked No. 6 in the
nation. The Coyotes, which finished
tied for fifth at last season’s USCSA National Championships, were ranked
behind Sierra Nevada College, Boston College, St. Olaf College, Plymouth State
College, and Colby Sawyer College in the poll.
Rounding out the Top-Ten were Brown University, Syracuse University,
University of Massachusetts, and Rocky Mountain College.
MEN’S BASKETBALL (0-2, 7-8): ‘Yotes
drop pair in Oregon, have week off
LAST WEEK: Lost
74-70 at Western Baptist, Lost 84-53 at Concordia
COMING UP: Idle, next game Jan. 3 vs. Evergreen, 8 p.m.
WESTERN STUNS COYOTES: Marty Reid rattled home a 15-foot jumper with 2.6 seconds left,
as Western Baptist upset No. 20 ranked Albertson College, 74-70, to open
Cascade Conference play in the Jeffers Center on Tuesday night. After the Coyotes Tom
Perkes (Spokane, Wash. / Big Bend CC) tied the score at 70-70 with
15 seconds left, Reid was isolated 1-on-1 with the Albertson defense, drove to
the free throw line and nailed the elbow jumper for the win. The 'Yotes
turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, with Reid draining both free
throws to ice the game. The lone senior
on the Western squad led the Warriors with 29 points, 18 in the second
half. Freshman Eric Fiegi added 20 points, but fouled out with four
minutes to play. Albertson rallied from a nine-point first half deficit to tie
the score at 39-39 at the break. Perkes led four 'Yotes in double figures
with 26 points and 11 rebounds, with Eric Hare (San Miguel de
Allende, Mexico / West Valley CC), Jon Thomas (Nampa, Idaho / Gem
State Academy), and Andy Harper (Idaho Falls, Idaho / Columbia
Basin CC) each scoring ten.
CONCORDIA MAKES IT 2-FOR-2: Concordia post Keith Childs lost three teeth, but not the
battle, as the Cavaliers used a 23 rebound advantage in a runaway 84-53 win
over No. 20 ranked Albertson College tonight at Cavalier Court. Childs took an
elbow from Coyote forward Eric Hare midway through the second half and briefly
left the game. Returning without a trio of pearly whites, the senior
All-American finished off Albertson with 14 points and 14 rebounds in the big
win. Reserves Troy
Slonecker and Jon Lee scored a combined 21 points in the second half for the
Cavs, who ended the contest on a 23-5 run.
Albertson scored the first basket of the
game, but Concordia scored 17 of the next 19 points, vaulting to a 42-32 lead
at halftime. Hare led the Coyotes with 17 points and seven rebounds, but a
57-34 rebound deficit was the back breaker.
BIGGEST LOSS SINCE: The 31-point loss
was the largest deficit since Albertson dropped an 89-55 game at Northwest
Nazarene on Jan. 8, 1999. It was also the
fourth-consecutive Cascade Conference road loss in a row, dating back to last
season (one of those losses last season, however, was later forfeited by Cascade
College).
OFF FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Albertson, sitting
below .500 for the first time since the beginning of the 2000-01 season, is off
until January 3, when the ‘Yotes host defending CCC champ Evergreen at 8 p.m.
MORE INFORMATION ON THE COYOTES: For game stories, statistics, and information
regarding the Albertson men’s basketball program, head to the official site of
Coyote basketball: www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/mensbasketball.htm.
LAST
WEEK: Won at Western Baptist, 71-52; won at
Concordia, 81-50.
COMING
UP: Host Westminster, Saturday, 7 p.m.
SECOND
HALF DOMINATION: Trying to play a full 40
minutes of basketball has been the dream of head coach Reagan Rossi throughout the 2002-03 season. Last week, the Lady ‘Yotes fulfilled half of
her expectations, played two nearly flawless second halves in lopsided road
victories over Cascade Conference rivals Western Baptist and Concordia. Over the course of the two games, Albertson
outscored its opponents 91-56 in the second half, shooting 32-of-61 from the
field (.525 percent).
BAILEY
PHENOMONAL: On Wednesday, post Kristen Bailey (Fountain Green, Utah / Snow CC) took over the Rose City for a one-night only
performance. The senior tied her own
school record with eight blocked shots, adding 19 points and 14 rebounds to her
ledger, as the Coyotes ran past Concordia.
At one stretch of the game, Bailey scored on three consecutive
possessions, each set up by a blocked shot on the defensive end. For the season, she has recorded 58 stuffs
this season in just 13 games, giving her 143 for her career.
MORE
ON CONCORDIA WIN: Despite a slow first
half, Albertson was able to take a 32-21 lead to the locker room. The key was on the boards, as the Lady ‘Yotes
had 15 offensive rebounds in the first half.
The Cavaliers did not respond after halftime, with the Coyotes embarking
on a 22-4 run with 10:45 left to put the game away.
PERFECT
FROM THE STRIPE: Helping Albertson out on
Wednesday night was solid foul shooting.
The Lady ‘Yotes were a perfect 15-of-15 from the line in the second half
– nailing 26-of-31 freebies for the game.
HEIDI-RIFIC:
One night earlier, it was Heidi Goicoechea (Burley, Idaho / Burley HS) leading the way for Albertson, as the Coyotes
stopped Western Baptist for the third consecutive time, 71-52, in Salem. The junior recorded her third double-double
of the season (had her fourth one night later), scoring a team-high 18 points
and 12 rebounds in the win. Goicoechea
hit 5-of-9 shots from outside the arc, including three three’s in the second
half, keying a 22-5 Albertson run to victory.
She is just five points shy of the 800 point mark in her Lady ‘Yote
career.
OFF
THE BENCH: Coming off the bench is
nothing new to point-guard Krystal
Thacker (Elko, Nev. /
BYU-Idaho), as the junior served
as the back-up for the final 13 games last season. In 2002, however, Thacker started the first nine games – but has
come into her own the past six, all off the bench. She is averaging nearly ten points, over three assists, and two
steals during that stretch, including 13 points at Western and 15 points at
Concordia. Thacker hit 8-of-13 shots in
the two games, and all ten of her foul shots.
WELL-ROUNDED
EFFORT: In the win over Western
Baptist, all ten who made the trip to the Willamette Valley scored in the
contest. Lindsey Karren (Brigham City,
Utah / Salt Lake CC) recorded her sixth
double-figure rebound game of the year, grabbing 11 rebounds to go along with
six points. Reserve point-guard Carley Williams (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS) hit a pair of treys, equaling a season-high six
points.
COTTERELL
WINS PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK: Although the
balloting for this past week has not been finalized, the Lady ‘Yotes were
surprised one week ago when freshman Dani Cotterell (Nampa, Idaho /
Nampa HS) was named Cascade
Conference Player-of-the-Week from Dec. 9-15.
Cotterell was honored for her outstanding performance in the 80-69 loss
at Northwest Nazarene where she scored 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the
floor. Last season, Albertson had three
players honored by the CCC, and are hopefully that Kristen Bailey (13.5 points,
10.5 rebounds, five blocks per game) can make it back-to-back Lady ‘Yotes.
FIRST
CHRISTMAS, THEN THE GRIFFINS: After
a few days off for the holidays, the Lady ‘Yotes play their final
non-conference game of the season on Saturday, hosting Westminster in a rematch of a November battle in Salt
Lake. The Griffins (8-5) are off to
their best start in school history, but saw their five-game winning streak
snapped on Saturday by Cal Poly-Pomona.
Westminster defeated Albertson, 67-47, on Nov. 14, a game which was
marred by a head injury to Coyote center Kristen Bailey. Head coach Daron Park’s team is led by
All-American forward Rebekah Steenblik (23.9 ppg, 8.8 rpg), who scored 18
points in the earlier win for Westminster, their first victory in four tries
against Albertson.
INTERNET BROADCAST
INFORMATION: It is unclear whether the next
three women’s games will be broadcast live via the internet. With the Albertson campus closed for the
next two weeks, and a major overhaul to the institution’s web server, how this
will affect the connection for live broadcasts is uncertain. Nonetheless, if games cannot be access live
at www.collegeofidaho.edu/webcam/Athletics.asx,
check the women’s basketball homepage (under Internet Broadcasts), where a link
to the audio broadcast will be created following each game. The sports information department apologizes
for an inconvenience.
