GENERAL
ATHLETICS NEWS:
"A WEEKEND OF
CHAMPIONS": Idaho's
own Albertson College and Lewis-Clark State will meet for single games on April
26 (5 p.m.) and April 27 (2 p.m.) at Memorial Stadium in Boise, with proceeds
to help the Coyote Athletic Association. In a year of severe budget cuts
at Albertson, all proceeds from this event will benefit athletics at Albertson,
helping to maintain the level of excellence of all Coyote athletic teams.
The athletic department has teamed with the Caldwell Youth Baseball
Association, Meridian Youth Baseball/Softball Association, RiverStone Community
School, Cole Valley Christian School, along with the Idaho Lottery and KIVI-TV
for this event. Tickets are $10 for each game and can be purchased by
contacting Dave Hahn at (208) 459-5835.
CAA DINNER SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 20:
The next CAA
dinner is set for this Thursday night, March 20 at 7 p.m. in the Simplot Dining
Hall. A recap of the NAIA Tournament, along with spring sports will be
the topic. To RSVP, contact Dave Hahn at 459-5835.
SKIING:
SEASON ENDS AT LAKE TAHOE: Solid, but a bit disappointing
performances capped the 2003 ski season for the Coyotes. The Albertson
women, one of the teams favored for a top-end finish at nationals, struggled to
put back-to-back clean runs - finishing eighth overall. It was the same
for the men, struggling to a tenth-place finish.
RECAP OF THE LADIES: Albertson finished ninth in the GS
and seventh in the slalom. Cassie Marcial earned All-America
honors in the slalom, placing seventh - but a fall in the GS ended any hopes
for a combined gold. Logan Thurber was the top overall Albertson
skier, finishing 20th in the combined.
THE MEN: Albertson finished 12th in the GS
and 11th in the slalom, well behind eventual champion, Sierra Nevada.
ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS: A single female, Chelsea
Schultz, and a trio of men - Justin Rackley, Matt Slyvester,
and cross country skier Mike Wolfe earned USCSA Academic All-America
honors.
WOMEN’S
BASKETBALL:
DUO NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS: A pair of Albertson women’s
basketball players were named to the Daktronics NAIA Division II All-America
Scholar-Athlete team on Monday. Seniors
Megan Henrichs and Kristen Bailey were among the 167
student-athletes on the list. Through
the fall and winter seasons, Albertson College has had 15 student-athletes
named to various All-Academic teams.
WOMEN'S
TENNIS (3-4 overall, 1-4 vs. NAIA):
COYOTES SPLIT IN MEDFORD: Albertson split a pair of matches
against Northwest foes last weekend. The Coyotes lost to NAIA Region I
rival Southern Oregon for the second time this season, 6-3, while stopping NCAA
Division III member Willamette, 7-2.
WEEKEND WINNERS: Freshmen Anna Moylan and Katie
Webster, along with junior Whitney Gibbon continued their
winning ways, sweeping their singles matches. Moylan at No. 3 and Gibbon
at No. 5 are both 5-2 on the season. Against Willamette, Albertson swept
the doubles matches for the first time this season, including Webster and Lauren
Writer at No. 1.
THIS WEEKEND: The Lady 'Yotes head to Ontario
for a Saturday match with Treasure Valley CC. Doubles begin at 3 p.m.
MEN’S BASKETBALL (22-14): ‘Yotes fall in Sweet Sixteen to
Jamestown, Perkes named All-American
LAST WEEK: NAIA Division II National Tournament, Point Lookout,
Mo. – defeated Taylor (Ind.), 53-44; lost to Jamestown (N.D.), 74-65.
COYOTES END SEASON AT NATIONAL
TOURNAMENT: The 2002-03 Albertson men’s
basketball season came to an abrupt end last Friday morning, as the Coyotes
dropped a second-round national tournament game to Jamestown of North
Dakota. The loss ended a stretch where
the ‘Yotes spent 17 of their last 20 days away from Caldwell – including five
road games, four of which the Purple and Gold won, and a 22-14 season – their sixth
consecutive 20-win season and 21st winning
record in 22 years.
IN BRANSON: The trip to the national tournament was memorable
for all involved. Outside of the two
games played at the College of the Ozarks, the Coyotes were treated to a
plethora of goodies from Bob and Karen Phillips from the Skaggs Medical Center
in Branson. Thanks to the Phillips’,
the Albertson team had meals in four distinct places – at a Jack Nicklaus
Signature Golf Course, at Shorty Smalls, a regionally renowned barbeque
restaurant, at Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede dinner show, and at the hosts home
just outside of Branson. The ‘Yotes
also played their share of miniature golf, held their own version of car racing
at a local go-kart track, and watched enough basketball to sink a battleship.
PERKES, HARPER EARN
ALL-AMERICA HONORS: Two ‘Yotes were
recognized by the NAIA for their accomplishments during the 2002-03
season. Forward Tom Perkes (Spokane,
Wash. / Big Bend CC) capped an outstanding season by being named to the
NAIA Division II All-America team as an honorable mention selection. The junior averaged 19 points and eight
rebounds in 36 games this year. Also
earning a national award was guard Andy Harper (Idaho Falls, Idaho /
Columbia Basin CC), who was the lone Coyote named to the Daktronics NAIA
Division II All-America Scholar-Athlete team.
Harper has a 3.73 GPA in chemistry.
DEFENSE SHINES IN WIN OVER
TAYLOR: The talk in Branson prior to
the tournament centered around the stifling defense that Taylor University of
Upland, Indiana have employed on teams all season. Although the Trojans held Albertson to 24 points below their
season average, it was the Coyotes’ 1-2-2 zone defense that kept Taylor in
check, upsetting the preseason No. 5 team in the nation, 53-44, in a
first-round national tournament game.
Despite an eight-minute scoring drought in the first half, an Andy Harper
steal and fastbreak bucket gave Albertson a 24-23 halftime edge. The teams traded blows during the first ten
minutes of the second half, before Jon Thomas (Nampa, Idaho / Gem
State Academy) buried a corner three-pointer to give the Coyotes the lead
for good. Albertson held Taylor without
a field goal for a six-minute stretch in crunchtime, using a 6-0 run to build a
49-40 lead and cruise to the win.
Harper led the ‘Yotes with 16 points, with Tom Perkes and Eric Hare (San
Miguel de Allende, Mexico / West Valley CC) each scoring 15.
NATIONAL TOURNAMENT RECORD
SET: The defensive struggle between
Albertson and Taylor helped set a new NAIA Division II tournament record for
least points scored in a game. The 97
points was well below the former mark of 107, set in a Huntington (Ind.) 60-47
win over Dickinson State (N.D.) in 2000.
The 44 points was the best defensive effort by the Coyotes since the
2000-01 in an 84-42 win over Bethany (Calif.), while the 97 points was the
lowest combined output for Albertson since a 43-36 win over Western Baptist in
the 1983-84 season.
MORE ON THE DEFENSIVE EFFORT: Taylor was noted for their outstanding defense,
but the Trojans were also one of the more efficient offensive teams in the
nation. The Midwesterners ranked No. 3
in the nation in both field goal percentage (.499) and three-point percentage
(.424) coming into the tournament. The
Albertson zone nullified any chances for the Trojans, as the ‘Yotes limited
Taylor to just 17-of-47 shooting from the floor (.362 percent) and just 5-of-21
field goals from outside the arc (.231 percent).
HARE GETS SPECIAL GIFT: The trip to the Ozarks was a special one for
senior Eric Hare. Not only did the
forward have a front-page story in the Idaho Statesman and the Branson Daily
News (to go along with an earlier story in the Idaho Press Tribune), but his
mother, Augustina, traveled from Mexico to see her son play for the first time
in college. The self-proclaimed “Aztec
Warrior” did not disappoint, averaging 12 points and six rebounds in the
Coyotes two games.
JIMMIES TOO MUCH FOR ‘YOTES: Albertson ran into a brick wall against Jamestown
College on Friday, dropping a hard fought 74-65 decision to the Jimmies. The ‘Yotes jumped out to an early 6-0 lead,
but fell behind in the first half, thanks in part to a 14-2 Jamestown run, and
trailed 29-24 at halftime. However,
Andy Harper hit four treys and Joe Green (Pocatello, Idaho /
BYU-Idaho) added two more early in the second half, as Albertson rallied to
take a 43-40 lead with nine minutes left.
Jamestown was unfazed, using a 54-34 rebound advantage to pull away late
for the win. Harper finished with 23
points, with Green adding 12, and Tom Perkes recording his 13th double-double
of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
CONFERENCE DOES WELL: The Coyotes were one of three Cascade Conference
teams to advance to the Sweet Sixteen at this year’s NAIA national
tournament. Cascade, which entered as
the No. 13 seed, won its opening round game against Black Hills State (S.D.),
79-73, before losing to Bellevue (Neb.), 69-59 in the second-round. An injury decimated Oregon Tech squad opened
the tourney with a 81-67 win over Husson (Maine), but lost to eventual national
runner-up Bethany (Kan.), 89-83. The
CCC was the only conference in the tourney that had three teams win first-round
games. Northwestern (Iowa) topped
Bethany, 79-59 on Tuesday night to claim their second national title in three
years.
RECORDS BROKEN: The 2002-03 season saw the ‘Yotes make dents in
the school records. Andy Harper set a
new single-game record for three-point percentage, going 5-for-5 against
Cascade in February. On the season
record front, Tom Perkes bullied his way into the top-ten in nine separate
categories – No. 1 in free throws made and attempted, No. 2 in points scored,
No. 3 in field goals made and rebounds, No. 4 in field goal attempts, No. 6 in
free throw percentage, and No. 7 in scoring average and turnovers. Harper ranks No. 7 in three-point attempts
and No. 9 in three-pointers made, Jon Thomas ranked No. 8 in three-point attempts,
and Joe Green No. 3 in single-season steals.
Thomas was the lone Coyote to crack the career list, ranking No. 3 in
three-point attempts and No. 7 in both three-pointers made and games played.

COYOTES: For game stories, statistics,
and information regarding the Albertson men’s basketball program, head to the
official site of Coyote basketball: www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/mensbasketball.htm.
BASEBALL (12-5, 2-0 Region I): Despite two wins over
OIT, rain continues to hamper Coyotes; host Central for three-game set
COMING UP: Three game series against Central Washington,
Simplot Stadium – single game Sunday at 4 p.m.; doubleheader on Monday at Noon.
LAST WEEK: Won Saturday at Oregon Tech (6-2, 12-4), Sunday
doubleheader postponed due to rain.
RAIN, RAIN, AND MORE RAIN: The Albertson baseball team typically plays its
early season games in places where rain is difficult to find. Lewiston, Idaho is known as the “Banana Belt”
for the fact that many rainstorms miss the Lewis-Clark Valley, while tucked
away in the Cascade Mountains, Klamath Falls, Ore. is in the rain shadow of southern
Oregon. However, this spring, the
weather is anything but ordinary, as all four Coyote games at the Guardian
Heating and Plumbing Tournament were washed away by Mother Nature, and two more
Region I games were postponed due to unplayable field conditions.
IN THE SLOP: A mixture of rain, snow, and the lack of a infield
tarp do not add up to a good mix. That
is what the ‘Yotes faced last Saturday at Oregon Tech during the first of two
scheduled doubleheaders against the Owls.
Despite the nasty field conditions, Albertson gutted out a pair of
victories – 6-2 and 12-4, before the weather cancelled play on Sunday. In the opener, four pitchers combined to
keep OIT in check, while Darren Uranga (Homedale, Idaho / Homedale
HS), Sage Kendall (Parma, Idaho / National American Univ.),
and Josh Orr (Winnemucca, Nev. / Lowry HS) each clubbed home
runs. The nightcap saw Albertson score
runs in seven of the nine innings, with Mike Moser (Arlington, Wash.
/ Bellevue CC) striking out eight batters in seven innings of work to pick
up his second win of the year.
BLAIR SCRATCHED, HALL RETURNS:
Scheduled Game 1 starter, Taylor Blair (Sacramento,
Calif. / American River CC), missed his normal start on Saturday,
complaining of stiffness in his pitching arm.
The Coyotes, however, expect Blair to make his next start this weekend
against Central Washington. On a
brighter note, sophomore right-hander Andrew Hall (Eagle, Idaho /
Eagle HS) made his first appearance of the 2003 season against OIT, giving
up an unearned run in one inning of work.
He had been hampered by an elbow problem this spring.
GARCIA’S STREAK HITS 23: With hits in each game of the doubleheader,
outfielder Dustin Garcia (Reno, Nev. / Feather River CC) extended
his hitting streak to 23 games, dating back to last year. The senior, who has hit safely in all 17
games in 2003, last failed to get a hit in a game on May 17 of last year,
against Vanguard. The school record is
a 27-game hitting streak, set by two-time All-American Scott Skeen, during the
2000 season.
URANGA CONTINUES TEAR: The last couple of weeks (albeit wet) have been a
launching pad for a stellar senior season for shortstop Darren Uranga. The four-year starter earned his third
Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I Hitter-of-the-Week honor of his career
after going 4-for-6 with two homers, a double, five runs scored, and five RBI
in the two games against Oregon Tech.
Uranga is hitting .467 since the season opening trip to California, with
a team-high 23 RBI. Over the next
couple of weeks, multiple career records will be broken by the former prep
football and basketball standout – including marks for games played and
started, hits, runs, and at bats.
KENDALL SWINGS HOT BAT: Also having a nice doubleheader in Klamath Falls
was catcher Sage Kendall. The sophomore
went 4-for-7 with a double, home run, and two RBI in the Coyotes first trip to
OIT in over a decade. The solid outings
raised Kendall’s season batting average 72 points.
REGIONAL AND NATIONAL POLLS: The first NAIA Region I coaches’ poll was released
on Tuesday morning, and Albertson had dropped from No. 2 to No. 3 in the
poll. Leading the way was defending
national champion Lewis-Clark State, followed by British Columbia and the
Coyotes, with Western Baptist in fourth.
In the national poll released Wednesday afternoon, Albertson dropped
from their preseason No. 9 ranking to No. 22.
LC-State dropped from No. 1 to No. 2, with British Columbia jumping into
the poll at No. 19. Oklahoma City, who
eliminated the ‘Yotes from last year’s College World Series, took over the No.
1 spot.
CENTRAL WASHINGTON COMING TO
TOWN: Former NAIA Region I rival and
now NCAA Division II opponent Central Washington makes the trip east
this weekend for a three-game series against the Coyotes. The Wildcats (8-10) are riding high after an
outstanding performance last weekend at the Gil Craker Memorial Tournament,
hosted by Northwest Nazarene. Central picked
up wins against regionally ranked Southern Colorado and Mesa State during the
three-day event, erasing the evils of an 0-4 start to the season. The ‘Cats are a power-hitting team, having hit
16 home runs already this season – led by slugger Brian Viafore (.321 5 HR 15
RBI). The pitching staff may be a
question mark for Central this weekend, as the team will play a doubleheader
against Western Baptist on Saturday, before making the trip to Caldwell. The Coyotes won last season’s match-up in
Ellensburg, 10-9, thanks to a pair of Scott Freeman homers. Albertson owns a 37-9 advantage in the
all-time series, and has won three consecutive games against the Wildcats.
AROUND THE REGION: 2002 College World Series teams Bellevue (Neb.)
and Mayville State (N.D.) have made the trek westward for two weeks of action
at Lewis-Clark State. So far on the
trip, Bellevue is 3-3 – with two wins against No. 1 ranked LC-State. Also in this weekend’s tourney is Region I
representative, Concordia. Both Oregon
Tech and British Columbia have the weekend off, with Western Baptist, who
dropped a 13-inning affair with Willamette on Tuesday, meets Central Washington
in a Saturday doubleheader.
NOTE ON STATISTICS: Complete statistics from the weekend games at
Oregon Tech are incomplete. The updated
cumulative statistics will be posted online someday during the day on
Thursday.
ON THE INTERNET/RADIO: Two of the three games from Central Washington
series are planned to be broadcast live on the Internet at www.collegeofidaho.edu/webcam/Athletics.asx.
Mike Safford Jr. will be at Simplot
Stadium on Sunday afternoon for the series opener at 4 p.m., along with the
first of two games on Monday at Noon. By
this time next week, the contract between KIOV 1450-AM and the Coyotes to broadcast
a limited amount of regular-season games on the radio should be ironed out. Stay tuned!

SOFTBALL (4-3): Lady ‘Yotes win
exhibition twinbill, host Walla Walla in first-ever night games
COMING UP: vs. Walla Walla (DH), Saturday, 7:45 p.m.; vs.
Western Baptist (exhibition DH), Monday, 11 a.m.
LAST WEEK: Defeated Blue Mountain CC (5-2, 7-0).
SOLID PLAY IN EXHIBITION WINS
OVER BLUE MOUNTAIN: It had been 13 days since
the Albertson softball team had taken the diamond in a competitive game. Saturday’s rain-soaked doubleheader against
Blue Mountain CC was a good chance for the Lady ‘Yotes to get the kinks out
prior to this weekend’s match-up with Walla Walla. In 14 innings, Albertson committed just one error, with the
outfield combining for three assists.
“It was a great weekend for us,” said head coach Kelly Gibbons,
who saw her team improve to 8-7 on the season (counting all games). “We came up with timely hits, got great
pitching, and played outstanding defense.”
THREE-(WO)MAN ROTATION: In the two games, a trio of hurlers were
impressive for the Coyotes. Game 1
starter Nicole Glenn (Nyssa, Ore. / BYU-Idaho) went the first three
innings, before leaving the game with tightness in her pitching arm. The senior gave up just one hit, while
striking out three batters in her outing.
Sophomore Lindzi Wasko (Lakenheath, England / Lakenheath
American HS) got the win in the opener, scattering four hits in four
innings of work. Wasko started Game 2,
giving up just one hit in two innings of work.
Redshirt freshman Kerri Russell (Melba, Idaho / Melba HS) was
dominate in her five innings of relief, giving up just two hits to pick up the
victory. Counting all 15 games played
(eight of the outings were exhibitions against junior colleges or club teams),
the three throwers have a combined 2.07 ERA.
WITH THE BAT: Last year’s leading hitter, Kira Leaton (Boise,
Idaho / Centennial HS), continued her torrid start to the 2003 season,
going 4-for-7 in the doubleheader, including a 3-for-4 second game, with 3
RBI. The sophomore is hitting .429 in
the 15 games played, with a team-high ten RBI (.389 with six RBI in counting
games). Infielder Heather Keepers (Apache
Junction, Ariz. / Apache Junction HS) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored,
a double, and an RBI. The sophomore has
been timely with her nine hits this season, knocking home an average of one run
per base knock. Leadoff hitter Victoria
DeLaRosa (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) broke out of a early season
funk, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases in the doubleheader.
SCHEDULE CHANGES: Many changes have been made to the 2003 softball
schedule – including one this weekend.
Albertson has moved its scheduled Sunday afternoon doubleheader with
Walla Walla College to Saturday – and the first-ever night games at Symms
Field. First pitch is slated for 7:45
p.m. The Albertson-Simon Fraser games
have set places and times – the Coyotes head to Baseball City in Canada on
April 12 at Noon, while the Clan head to Caldwell on Saturday, May 3, at 1
p.m. Also changed was date and time of
the conference battle at Symms Field with Concordia – the game will be played
at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 4. Not confirmed,
however, is a possible game or games against Walla Walla on Friday afternoon
(watch the Albertson softball website for further information on developments).
WOLVES TO METTLE WITH THE
COYOTES: As mentioned earlier, the
Coyotes have moved the previously scheduled Sunday doubleheader with Walla
Walla to Saturday night. The Wolves
(0-4), a Seventh-Day Adventist affiliated institution, cannot participate in
contests from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday – hence the night games. The NCCAA school is off to a rough start to
the 2003 season, being outscored 34-2 in a home double-dip against Eastern
Oregon, and also was swept by Northwest Christian. The two teams split a twinbill last year, Albertson winning 7-4,
with the Wolves scoring five seventh-inning runs to stun the Coyotes, 5-4. The two teams will play a second
doubleheader at Walla Walla in April.
NEXT YEAR IT WILL COUNT: Monday afternoon, Albertson will play a pair of
exhibition games against Western Baptist. The Warriors are in their final year as a club team – they will
become the sixth team in the Cascade Conference to sponsor softball during the
2004 season.
