GENERAL ATHLETICS NEWS:

"A WEEKEND OF CHAMPIONS": Idaho's own Albertson College and Lewis-Clark State will meet for single games on April 26 (5 p.m.) and April 27 (2 p.m.) at Memorial Stadium in Boise, with proceeds to help the Coyote Athletic Association.  In a year of severe budget cuts at Albertson, all proceeds from this event will benefit athletics at Albertson, helping to maintain the level of excellence of all Coyote athletic teams.  The athletic department has teamed with the Caldwell Youth Baseball Association, Meridian Youth Baseball/Softball Association, RiverStone Community School, Cole Valley Christian School, along with the Idaho Lottery and KIVI-TV for this event.  Tickets are $10 for each game and can be purchased by contacting Dave Hahn at (208) 459-5835.

BASEBALL TAILGATE PARTY: Come join the Albertson Admission Department for a tailgate party this Saturday at 10:30 a.m., prior to the baseball doubleheader with Northwest Nazarene.  The event will take play on the McCain Center balcony at Albertson College and donations will be taken.  For more information, contact Lori Werth at 459-5305.

WEBSITE REDESIGN: Over the next few weeks, watch for changes on the interior pages within the Albertson athletic website.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (3-4):

MATCH WITH TVCC CANCELED: The scheduled match with Treasure Valley CC on Saturday was canceled.  A make-up date for the match has not been reached.

OFF UNTIL APRIL: The next match for the Lady 'Yotes, who have a 3-4 record overall and 1-3 Region I mark is the weekend of April 12-13 when they travel to the Seattle area to meet Pacific Lutheran and Bellevue CC.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S GOLF:

SEASON KICKS OFF THURSDAY: The 2003 Albertson men's and women's golf team will open its Spring season this Thursday afternoon in dual matches with Northwest Nazarene at Ridgecrest Golf Club in Nampa.  The nine member men's team and the two member women's team should be very competitive this season, states head coach Garry Matlock.  The season includes a trio of tournaments - the Lewis-Clark State Invitational, the Idaho State Invitational, and the Westminster Invitational, all leading up to the Regional Championship in Missoula, Mont.

BASEBALL (14-6): ‘Yotes take 2-of-3 from Central, Garcia takes 26-game hitting streak into weekend NNU series

COMING UP: Four-game series with Northwest Nazarene – doubleheader Friday at Vail Field, Nampa, 4 p.m.; doubleheader Saturday at Simplot Stadium, noon.

LAST WEEK: Won 2-of-3 games vs. Central Washington (W 6-5, L 7-5, W 6-2).

GARCIA EXTENDS HITTING STREAK NEAR RECORD TERRITORY: It was a bit dicey on Monday afternoon, but when the weekend was all said and done, Dustin Garcia (Reno, Nev. / American River CC) extending his hitting streak to 26-games, helping the Coyotes to wins in two of three games.  The senior, who sits one game shy of Scott Skeen’s 27-game streak from the 2000 season, took care of business in his opening at bat on Sunday – grounding a base hit up the middle.  Monday, it was a bit tougher – after going 0-for-3, “DGar" hit a two-strike two-out RBI double off the top of the left-centerfield wall to keep the game and streak alive.  Garcia stroked a pair of doubles in the nightcap, giving him a 5-for-12 series, with five runs scored and two RBI.

BURROW CONTINUES TO IMPRESS: With a nagging arm injury keeping All-Conference starter Taylor Blair (Sacramento, Calif. / Feather River CC) in the dugout, transfer Brad Burrow (Taylorsville, Utah / College of Southern Idaho) has emerged as the top Coyote hurler this year.  The junior picked up both Albertson victories in the Central Washington series, running his mark to 6-0 on the year, dropping his ERA to 1.59.  Burrow went a strong seven innings in Monday’s second game, giving up just one earned run while striking out five.  He also picked up the win in relief on Sunday – that after blowing his first save opportunity in five chances.

URANGA BREAKS ONE MARK, NEARING OTHERS: Productivity and longevity has been the key for shortstop Darren Uranga (Homedale, Idaho / Homedale HS) and his pursuit of a handful of Coyote career records.  The senior reached his first milestone on Monday, starting his 194th game in an Albertson uniform, moving him past Greg Schelhaas into the top spot.  Uranga ranks second behind the former slugger in four other categories – hits, runs, at bats, and games played.  He also currently ranks third all-time in RBI, fourth in triples, and fifth in doubles.

YOUNGER REID RETURNS TO LINE-UP: After missing the first 19 games of the season with a knee injury, sophomore infielder Trey Reid (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) returned to the line-up against Central Washington on Monday.  Reid, who damaged knee ligaments during the off-season, wears a protective brace on his right knee for support.

PRODUCTION FROM THE BACKSTOP: Offensive production from the catcher position has not been a plus for the Coyotes over the past few years.  Despite the great defensive play from three-year starter D.J. Eberlin and others, the Albertson backstops had combined for just a .232 average and 31 RBI during the past two seasons combined.  Things look to be changing in 2003, as the ‘Yote catchers have a combined .277 average with 15 RBI.  Sage Kendall (Parma, Idaho / National American Univ.) leads the way with a .318 average, a homer and 11 RBI – including the game-winning base hit on Sunday against Central.  Kendall has went 8-for-18 at the plate during his last five games with six RBI.

PATIENCE AT THE PLATE: Another Coyote with a good weekend was second-baseman Greg Stalling (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS).  The freshman went 6-for-12 in the weekend set, scoring four runs and driving in four more – raising his batting average to .379.  What is even more impressive is the youngster’s team-leading .560 on base percentage – thanks in part to 20 free passes he has drawn this year.

RECAPPING THE WEEKEND: An RBI single by Sage Kendall in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Albertson a 5-4 victory over Central Washington in Sunday’s series opener.  Coyote starter Noah Grubenhoff (Selah, Wash. / Columbia Basin CC) went seven effective innings, giving up just three earned runs, but left with the score tied 3-3.  After a 1-2-3 eighth inning from freshman Clayton Hubbard (Pocatello, Idaho / Pocatello HS), Josh Orr (Winnemucca, Nev. / Lowry HS) gave Albertson a one-run lead with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.  After Central tied it with two outs in the ninth, Greg Stalling led off the bottom half with a single and stole second.  Stalling advanced to third on a Nick Snow (Everett, Wash. / Cal Poly-SLO) double off the centerfield wall, then scored on Kendall’s chopper through a drawn in infield.  Monday’s doubleheader saw Central capitalize on three Albertson errors to win the opener, 7-5.  Trailing by five in the ninth, the Coyotes strung together doubles by Orr and Dustin Garcia, a Stalling single, and a Darren Uranga triple to bring the tying run to the plate.  However, Snow struck out on three pitches to end the game.  The nightcap was all Albertson, scoring six runs in the first four frames to secure the win.  A plus was two scoreless innings from the Coyote pen – as Hubbard and sophomore Matt Bergstrom (Hermiston, Ore. / Hermiston HS) each retired the Wildcats in order.

REGIONAL AND NATIONAL POLLS: For the second consecutive week, Albertson is ranked No. 3 in the NAIA Region I coaches’ poll, behind Lewis-Clark State and British Columbia.  Rounding out the regional top-six are Concordia, Western Baptist, and Oregon Tech.  Albertson remained at No. 22 in this week’s national poll, with LC-State staying put at No. 2 after a 5-2 week, and British Columbia moving up from No. 19 to No. 16 without playing a game.

HOME AND HOME WITH NORTHWEST NAZARENE: The Canyon County battle on the diamond will commence this weekend, as Albertson and Northwest Nazarene will meet for a four-game series – with a doubleheader taking place at each school’s home field.  The Crusaders (4-17) have struggled in their first season as a full-fledged NCAA Division II member – but played well on Tuesday, sweeping a doubleheader from Eastern Oregon.  NNU can hit the ball – holding a team batting average of .300 and five starters with averages .333 or higher.  However, the nightmare for head coach Tim Onofrei has been on the mound – a 9.48 team ERA has haunted him, and the fact that three of his four starting pitchers have ERA’s above 10.00.  Last season, Albertson won five of the six meetings between the schools, including the final four, extending their all-time mark against their rival to 83-9.

SOFTBALL (6-3): Glenn tosses perfect game in record-breaking doubleheader sweep of Walla Walla

COMING UP: Idle until next Wednesday, Northwest Nazarene (DH), 2 p.m.

LAST WEEK: Defeated Walla Walla (6-0, 10-2).

GLENN MAKES COYOTE HISTORY: An afternoon like the one Friday at Symms Field does not happen often.  Albertson hurler Nicole Glenn (Nyssa, Ore. / BYU-Idaho) was in the zone, literally, tossing the first perfect game in Coyote history, blanking Walla Walla College, 6-0, in Game 1 of a doubleheader.  The senior retired all 21 batters, striking out ten.  With the outstanding performance, Glenn was named Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I Pitcher-of-the-Week – the first Albertson player to ever receive the honor.

ABOUT THE NO-NO: The key to the no-hitter was the fact that Nicole Glenn never allowed a Walla Walla player to reach a three-ball count.  Outside of the ten punch-outs, the Wolves never got a ball to the outfield – seven balls were hit on the ground to infielders, with four others popping up to fielders around the horn.  Solid defensive play from shortstop Angie Gribble (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) and second-baseman Andrea Nicolosi (Mountain Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS) allowed the gem to continue.

BIG BAT ATTACK: Overshadowed by the outstanding performance in Game 1 in the circle was the offensive outburst in Game 2 by the ‘Yotes.  Albertson set school records for runs in a game in the 10-2 win over Walla Walla.  The Coyotes scored a school record nine runs in the first inning, en route to the five inning win via the eight-run rule.  The victors pounded out 12 hits, one off the school mark set against Northwest Nazarene on March 1, 2002.  It was the sixth-time that the Coyotes have recorded ten or more hits in a game.

MCCLURE SWINGS THE HOT STICK: A year of experience has proven big dividends for outfielder Heather McClure (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS).  The sophomore was key in the two wins last Friday, going 4-for-6 at the plate with two doubles, three RBI, and two stolen bases.  In just nine games this year, McClure has already eclipsed her total for RBI, and is halfway to her hits total from 2002.  For her efforts, McClure was the runner-up for Cascade Conference Hitter-of-the-Week honors.

IF THE FENCES WERE JUST SHORTER: The nine-run first inning in Friday’s nightcap was memorable for freshman Katie Theisen (Meridian, Idaho / Centennial HS).  The outfielder led off the game with a ringing shot off the centerfield fence, just missing her first home run.  As 13 batters came up during the inning, Theisen took her second shot at leftfield, drilling another hole in the wall for a two-run double.  All-in-all, Theisen went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI in the win.

OTHERS SHINING WITH THE BAT: Also having a good doubleheader was infielders Kira Leaton (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) and freshman Angie Gribble.  Leaton went 3-for-6 in the set, with four RBI – including a run-scoring triple in Game 2.  Gribble shook off a poor start to the season at the plate by going 3-for-6, all singles.

COYOTES IN THE CASCADE CONFERENCE TOP-TEN: Unlike last season, the Coyotes are a dominant force in the 2003 Cascade Conference statistics.  Heading into play this week, Nicole Glenn ranks No. 2 in both strikeouts and wins, along with No. 4 in earned run average.  Katie Theisen leads the league in both doubles and stolen bases, while Kira Leaton leads the loop with ten RBI.  Leaton also ranks No. 3 in hits and No. 8 in batting average, with Heather McClure ranking second in stolen bases and No. 4 in batting average.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The second regular-season NAIA national poll was released on Tuesday and two of the six NAIA Region I teams were among the Top-25.  Simon Fraser, who has already handed Albertson a 10-0 defeat this season, was the co-No. 1 team in the nation, along with Oklahoma Baptist.  Also among the nation’s elite was Southern Oregon, who was ranked No. 18.  Ironically, Oregon Tech received ten votes with a 6-8 record, while Eastern Oregon, riding a nine-game win streak and a 9-2 record, did not receive a vote.

FINAL REST DAYS BEFORE THE STORM BEGINS: This week, the fastpitch team will practice hard, but not take the field for a game – preparing for next Wednesday’s match-up with rival Northwest Nazarene.  Beginning next week, the Coyotes will play six games a week over four of the next five weeks, including the 20-game Cascade Conference season, and a four-game home-and-home set with Simon Fraser.

MORE ON NORTHWEST NAZARENE: The so-called twins of the Treasure Valley in softball are not so identical this year, as NNU has not enjoyed the same second-season success that its Canyon County rival has.  Duane Miller’s squad, after limping to a 4-36 record in their first season, is still searching for their first win of 2003.  The Crusaders (0-13), who have lost 20-in-a-row dating back to last year, have scored two-or-more runs in just three games this season – but nearly upset regional opponent Western Washington, losing 10-8 in eight innings.  Only one player has a batting average above .200 – Meagan Shaw at .294, and the squad as a team his a GNAC low .144.  Games against Albertson have not been friendly to NNU, as the Lady ‘Yotes have won all seven meetings, outscoring the Crusaders, 40-18 – including 7-1 and 7-2 losses this year.
