GENERAL
ATHLETICS NEWS:
A WEEKEND OF CHAMPIONS: The Coyote Athletic Association would like to that all of those who supported "A Weekend of Champions." Although the weather wasn't the greatest, those who were at Memorial Stadium on Saturday and Sunday had a great time.
MEN'S
AND WOMEN'S GOLF:
LADIES PLACE IN TOP-TEN: Both Roslyn Folk and Sarah Gallant represented Albertson well at the NAIA Region I golf tournament in Missoula, Mont. Folk finished in sixth place with a three-round total of (83-79-80) 222, while Gallant shot a (85-79-81) 225. Since both players are freshmen, the future looks bright for the Coyotes.
MEN STUMBLE TO SIXTH-PLACE FINISH: After a very consistent first day, the Albertson men struggled to a sixth-place finish at Larchmont Golf Club. The Coyotes were 17 shots out of the lead going into the final-round, but mustered only a 308 - their lowest team round in three weeks. John Bideganeta led the team with a 14th-place finish.
WOMEN'S TENNIS:
REGIONAL SUCCESS: Head coach Cisco Limbago knew that his women's tennis team had been improving all season long. His premonition was correct, as the Coyote upset Southern Oregon and Alberta in advancing to the regional final, where Albertson lost to Lewis-Clark State. The purple and gold defeated SOU and Alberta by identical 5-4 scores, while losing to LCSC by a 7-2 margin.
MOYLAN MAGIC: Anna Moylan was the big
success story, as the freshman was perfect in her six matches, winning three
times at No. 3 singles, and three times at No. 3 doubles. Overall this
season, Moylan was 8-2 in her singles matches, and 7-4 playing doubles.
GIBBON HAS SOLID YEAR: Also finishing the 2003 season
with marks above .500 was Whitney Gibbon, who went 6-4 during singles
play, and a combined 6-5 in doubles - albeit with three different partners.
BASEBALL: Coyotes
hold playoff destiny in their hands as regular-season wraps up with Eastern
COMING UP: vs. Eastern Oregon (DH), Saturday, 1 p.m.; at
Eastern Oregon (DH), Sunday, 1 p.m. (PDT)
LAST WEEK: at No. 3 Lewis-Clark State (L 7-6, L 16-1), vs.
No. 3 Lewis-Clark State (W 6-5, L 10-3)
PLAYOFF PICTURE: The final weekend of the NAIA Region I
regular-season looks to go into overtime as four teams vie for three spots in
the regional tournament to be held in Vancouver, B.C., from May 8-10. Only British Columbia has assured itself a
spot in the tournament, with the Coyotes, Concordia, Western Baptist, and
Oregon Tech jockeying for position.
Albertson has the easiest road, playing last-place Eastern Oregon,
needing a sweep to guarantee a spot in the tourney, and 3-for-4 wins to all-but
clinch a berth. The other three teams
will have to go to overtime to finish their regular season – as make-up games
featuring each of the squads are set for Monday. The key match-up is Concordia meeting Oregon Tech in a twinbill –
with a possible playoff berth on the line.
Nonetheless the winner of the regional tournament will head to
California for the West Coast Super-Regional, to be hosted by the winner of the
Region II tourney.
‘YOTES LOSE 3-OF-4 TO NO. 3
LEWIS-CLARK STATE: It wasn’t a great week
for the Coyotes in their annual series against intra-state rival Lewis-Clark
State. Albertson had its chances in
three of the four games, but managed just one victory. The opener saw Albertson jump to leads of
5-2 and 6-4 off Warrior No. 1 starter Marc Kaiser, but a Micah Furtado two-run
homer tied the game, and LC-State won it in the bottom of the ninth. Darren Uranga (Homedale, Idaho /
Homedale HS) was the hitting star for the ‘Yotes in the game, going 3-for-5
with two RBI, including an RBI triple in the sixth inning. Game two was a nightmare, as the Warriors
scored 15 runs in the first two innings en route to a 16-1 win. The bright spot in a dismal game was the
pitching of freshman Jake Hoadley (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS),
who went four innings, giving up just one run on five hits. Saturday’s game at Memorial Stadium to open “A
Weekend of Champions” gave fans their money worth, as Albertson rallied for
three runs in the ninth inning to defeat LC-State, 6-5. Rob Reid (Boise, Idaho / Cochise
CC) led off the ninth with a single, with his brother, Trey Reid (Boise,
Idaho / Capital HS) following with a walk.
Nate Freese (Vancouver, Wash. / Skyview HS), who was
3-for-3 in the game, layed down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown wildly to
first, scoring pinch-runner Alex Tiede (American Falls, Idaho /
American Falls HS), and moving Freese and pinch-runner Billy Arko (Mountain
Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS) into scoring position. Dustin Garcia (Reno, Nev. /
Feather River CC) scored Tiede from third with an infield single, while Greg
Stalling (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) singled home his high school
teammate, Jake McGrady (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS), running at
third for Arko, for the winning run.
Sunday saw a 2-2 game get away from Albertson, with LCSC winning the
final game of the series, 10-3. Rob
Reid hit his first home run of the season in the loss for the ‘Yotes
HOWELL NAMED HITTER-OF-THE-WEEK:
When the voting for the Cascade Conference
and NAIA Region I Hitter-of-the-Week was complete, Coyote first-baseman Todd
Howell (Marysville, Wash. / Skagit Valley CC) earned the accolades. The senior hit .417 on the week (10-for-24)
with six RBI in the Coyotes six games.
He becomes the fourth Albertson player to earn either a conference or
region weekly award during the 2003 season.
BLAIR TO MISS START: Junior right-hander Taylor Blair (Sacramento,
Calif. / American River CC) will not make his scheduled start this weekend
against Eastern Oregon. Blair has been
experiencing fatigue in his throwing arm and the ‘Yotes hope a week off will
get the All-Conference player back on track in time for regionals. Noah Grubenhoff (Selah, Wash. /
Columbia Basin CC) will replace Blair in the rotation.
SCHELHAAS LOOKING OUT FOR
URANGA: Heading into the final week of
the regular-season, it is becoming crunch time on Darren Uranga’s assault on
the career record book. Already holding
the record for most at bats, games played, and games started, the senior is
within an eyelash of a pair of records.
Uranga needs just seven runs scored to top the mark of 206 set by Greg
Schelhaas from 1996-99. He also needs
14 hits to break the slugger’s school mark of 270. One record that may be out of reach is the RBI mark, with Uranga
31 RBI behind the 204 Schelhaas put up in his Coyote career.
EBERLIN TO PLAY IN ARIZONA: 2002 Albertson graduate D.J. Eberlin has signed a
professional contract with the Bisbee-Douglas Copper Kings in the
Arizona-Mexican League. Eberlin will
join former ‘Yote Nick Williams on the team.
On the professional watch, Branden Florence continues to put up huge
numbers, ranking second in the California league with a .385 batting
average. Florence leads the San Jose
Giants with six homers and 16 RBI. Jason
Simontacchi (0-1 8.36 ERA) had a good outing his last time out with the St.
Louis Cardinals – giving up just two runs in six innings of work against the
Florida Marlins.
ABOUT THE MOUNTIES: This weekend, Eastern Oregon makes its
annual exodus to Caldwell on Saturday, before the ‘Yotes return the favor to La
Grande on Sunday. The Mountaineers
(4-30) are looking for their first win at Simplot Stadium since the 1996
season, and have won just 11 of the 93 meetings with the Coyotes. This season, Eastern on average is giving up
over eight runs per game, with no starting pitcher with an ERA under five. They rank last in the conference in batting
average, but Brant Davis (.286 4 HR 19 RBI) is a difficult out.

SOFTBALL (15-14): Coyotes in must-win situation
as regular-season ends this week with six home games
COMING UP: vs. Eastern Oregon (DH), Thursday, 2 p.m.; vs. No.
1 Simon Fraser (DH), Saturday, 1 p.m.; vs. Concordia (DH), Sunday, 4:30 p.m.
LAST WEEK: vs. Northwest Nazarene (W 3-2, L 3-0), at Oregon
Tech (L 6-5, L 11-0) at No. 19 Southern Oregon (W 5-3, L 3-2)
PLAYOFF PICTURE SIMPLE – GOTTA
WIN: With just one week remaining
in the Cascade Conference softball season, it is plain and simple what the Lady
‘Yotes need to do this week to continue playing – win. Albertson sits three games out of the final
regional playoff berth with four counting games remaining, including two
against its closest companion, Eastern Oregon.
The Coyotes must sweep both Eastern Oregon and Concordia, then hope for
a Concordia sweep at Eastern, to keep the playoff dream alive.
JOCKEYING FOR POSITION: Three of the four spots in the tournament, which
will be held at Delta Park in Portland on May 9-10, have been determined. Top-ranked Simon Fraser has clinched the No.
1 seed, thanks to perfect records against the other two teams who have clinched
– Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech.
Southern can clinch the CCC title and the No. 2 slot with a win over OIT
on Saturday. OIT could fall as far as
fourth, however, depending on how Eastern Oregon does this weekend against
Albertson and Concordia.
CHANCES FOR
ALL-CONFERENCE: Late this week, the 2003 All-Cascade Conference
team will be selected by the five coaches in the loop. Albertson has a trio of players who are
hopeful of earning a spot on the team.
The leading Coyote candidate is catcher Tiffany Mathews (Las
Vegas, Nev. / Eldorado HS), who was an honorable mention selection last
year. The sophomore is sixth in the
conference in batting average (.384), ranks fourth with nine doubles, is third
with nine stolen bases, and has thrown out 43-percent of would-be base
stealers. Also up for honors is the
youngster of the bunch, Katie Theisen (Meridian, Idaho / Centennial
HS), who has had an impressive rookie season. Theisen is tied for third in the loop in batting average (.385),
leads the league with 16 stolen bases, and has converted 31 chances in the
outfield without an error. Also with a
shot at an All-CCC plaque is the lone senior on the squad, pitcher Nicole
Glenn (Nyssa, Ore. / BYU-Idaho).
Glenn has dropped her ERA this season nearly three runs per game (2.21),
which is No. 3 in the league. She also
ranks second in strikeouts (64) and fourth in wins with nine.
KERNS SHOWS HER POTENTIAL AT
SOUTHERN: The Coyotes had been waiting
for freshman designated player Tiffany Kerns (Boise, Idaho / Bishop
Kelly HS) to break out of a season-long hitting slump and show the kind of
promise that made her an All-State selection coming out of high school. Kerns did it in a big way at No. 19 Southern
Oregon on Sunday afternoon, going 4-for-6 with three doubles and four RBI as
Albertson nearly swept, but settled for a split with the Raiders. Kerns capped off a five-run fifth inning in
the 5-3 Game 1 win with a two-run double to left-center, giving the Coyotes an
insurmountable lead. She plated both
Albertson runs in the 3-2 loss in the nightcap, again ripping a two-run double
to the gap. With the solid weekend,
Kerns saw her batting average jump nearly 50 points, with half of her season
hits going for extra bases.
ALMOST AT OREGON TECH: Playing one-run games this season has been nothing
new for the Lady ‘Yotes, including Saturday’s opener against Oregon Tech. Of the 29 games Albertson has played this
season, nine have been decided by one run or less – with the Coyotes holding a
5-4 won-loss advantage. It wasn’t to be
against OIT, however, as the Owls erased an Albertson 5-1 advantage with three
fifth-inning runs and a run in the seventh inning. OIT won it in the eighth, dropping the ‘Yotes to 0-2 in
extra-inning games this season. Tiffany
Mathews went 3-for-4 in Game 1, while Heather Keepers (Apache
Junction, Ariz. / Apache Junction HS) took over the team lead in RBI with a
2-for-4, three RBI game.
RIVALS FINALLY BREAK THROUGH: With a 3-0 win over Albertson last Wednesday
afternoon, the Northwest Nazarene softball team ended a pair of longstanding
records. It was the first win over the
Coyotes in eleven meetings, and it ended a 42-game losing streak. Nonetheless, the Lady ‘Yotes rallied for a
3-2 win in the first game of the day, thanks in part to 2-for-4 afternoons from
Katie Theisen and Tiffany Mathews.
Albertson won the game in their final at bat, as Heather McClure (Boise,
Idaho / Centennial HS) beat out a grounder to third that was bobbled by the
Crusader defender, allowing Nicole Rollins (Heyburn, Idaho / Burley
HS) to score from third.
COMPARED TO LAST SEASON: In looking at the numbers from the 2002 season to
the 2003 season, the improvement made by the Coyote softballers is
astounding. In just 29 games this year,
the Lady ‘Yotes have already surpassed last season’s total for wins (15) and
RBI (99), and are well ahead of the marks for batting average (.267), fielding
percentage (.942), and ERA (2.85). With
19 less games played this year, the 2003 bunch needs to score six runs to
surpass last season’s total and club seven more doubles to set a new school
record. Three players – Katie Theisen,
Tiffany Mathews, and Kira Leaton (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) all
have their batting averages over .300, something no player did in 2002. Three players also have eclipsed the school
record for RBI in a season, with Mathews already breaking the mark for doubles
in a year. One other thing – the
winning percentage of .517 is much more pleasant than the .250 from last year.
SIX GAMES TO END
REGULAR-SEASON: Six regional games
remain for the Coyotes, but four of them involve Cascade Conference opponents –
with a possible playoff berth alive. Up
first for Albertson is nemesis Eastern Oregon, who has defeated
Albertson in all eight previous meetings – including three times already this
season. The Mountaineers (19-12) need
only one win to sew up a playoff berth for the seventh consecutive year, which
includes trips to the NAIA Championships in 1999 and 2000. Eastern is led offensively by shortstop Casi
Reisenauer (.385 2 HR 17 RBI) and first-baseman Beth Hull (.367 4 HR 22 RBI),
as the team averages nearly five runs per game. Saturday, the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, Simon Fraser,
makes their second appearance in two years to Caldwell. The Clan (25-3) have won 22 games in a row
since opening the season 3-3 against NCAA Division II opponents in Hawaii. Albertson is one of two CCC teams (Oregon
Tech the other) who have held SFU under five runs in a game (in a 5-0 loss at
Softball City three weeks ago). The
tandem of Erin Thomas (11-1 1.03 ERA) and Auburn Sigurdson (12-2 1.22 ERA) have
been lethal for opponents, while Shannon Rossiter (.402 5 HR 26 RBI), Erin
Cumpstone (.388 6 HR 36 RBI), and Rachel Schill (.446 10 RBI) lead with the
bats. The Clan is 6-0 all-time against
the Coyotes. The regular-season finale
occurs on Sunday, as cellar-dwellar Concordia pays its visit to Symms
Field. The Cavaliers (6-23) have been a
tough-luck team in conference play, losing six of their 12 games by one-run
decisions. The squad, which ranks last
in the conference in hitting, pitching, and fielding, is led by outfielder
Alicia McConkey (.345 1 HR 8 RBI).
Albertson holds a 4-3 edge in the series, with the two teams splitting
games in Portland earlier this year.
