GENERAL ATHLETICS NEWS:
VOLLEYBALL WEBCASTS PLANNED FOR THE WEEKEND: The first-ever volleyball webcasts in Albertson
College history are planned for this weekend, as the Coyotes host Western
Baptist and Concordia in key Cascade Conference action. Unless technical problems arise, join
sophomore Jordan Komoto and freshman Jake McClean for all of the
play-by-play beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night (www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/vball/profiles/2002/radio.htm). The plan is to carry all home volleyball,
baseball, and softball games live on the internet this year, along with 31 men’s
basketball and 22 women’s basketball contests via the Albertson Athletic
Website.
COYOTE OPEN COMING UP: The 2002 version of the Coyote Open, one of the
biggest golf tournaments in the area, is set for September 27 at River Bend
Golf Course. For more information on
how to play or sponsor this year’s tournament, contact Athletic Marketing
Director Dave Hahn at (208) 459-5835.
WANT TO GO TO LAS VEGAS WITH THE 'YOTES?: The Albertson College alumni office has put together a package for alumni and boosters to watch the Coyote men's basketball team open up the 2002 season at the Las Vegas Invitational. Round trip airfare (leaving Nov. 1 and returning Nov. 3) along with two nights stay at The Orleans Hotel is $285 through Uniglobe VIP Travel. There will also be a post-game function following the 'Yotes opener against Dakota Wesleyan in convention center at the hotel from 9:30-11 p.m. For more information on how to join the 'Yotes in Vegas, contact the Albertson alumni office at (208) 459-5300.
LAST
WEEK: Won at Oregon Tech, 3-0; lost at Southern
Oregon, 3-1.
COMING
UP: vs. Western Baptist, Friday, 7 p.m.; vs.
Concordia, Saturday, 7 p.m.
COYOTES
GET SPLIT ON SOUTHERN SWING: After
what may have been one of the top two preseason schedules in the entire Cascade
Conference, the Albertson volleyball team finished its ten-game road trip by
splitting a pair of games in Oregon last week.
The Lady ‘Yotes stopped Oregon Tech, while Southern Oregon took care of
the purple and gold in four games. The
squad has never swept both teams on the 1,000 mile trek – the Coyotes have
dropped both games on two occasions, and went 1-1 on three different occasions
(OIT began volleyball in 1998).
TIPTON
RETURNS: The Lady ‘Yotes got a
huge boost on Friday night, as middle blocker Katy Tipton (Ontario, Ore. /
Ontario HS) returned to the line-up
for the first time this season. The
senior has been battling back problems all season, and did not make the
preseason trips to San Diego and Spokane.
Tipton had a solid weekend, despite the pain, recording 11 kills and a
.250 attack percentage in the two matches.
BIG
WIN IN KLAMATH: Oregon Tech hoped for
revenge after Albertson eliminated the Owls from the 2001 Cascade Conference
tournament, but the Coyotes would not have anything to do with that. The 31-29, 30-26, 32-30 victory allowed the
Lady ‘Yotes to claim their first victory in Klamath Falls since 2000. Game one saw 15 ties or lead changes before
Albertson won the final three points for the game win. Tipton had ten kills and three blocks, while
Kristyn Price (Bellevue, Idaho / Wood River HS) had 17 kills and nine digs for the Coyotes.
RAIDERS
CONTINUE ASHLAND DOMINANCE: What
happened back in 1987? The Last Emperor
won best picture at the Academy Awards, Ronald Reagan was president, the
Minnesota Twins won the World Series, and Albertson stopped Southern Oregon in
volleyball at McNeal Pavilion. The
biggest losing skid for the Albertson volleyball team continued on Saturday, as
Southern, the No. 13 ranked team in the NAIA, won for the 14th-consecutive time
on their home floor against the Coyotes.
Despite a big 23 kill night from Price, the ‘Yotes were victimized by 18
Raider aces, and just a .175 attack percentage.
PRICE
ATOP THE CONFERENCE: With 40 more kills this
weekend, Kristyn Price is continuing her assault on the Albertson College
record books. Price, who leads the
Cascade Conference in kills per game (5.5), has recorded 205 put-aways so far
this season. Not only is she on pace to
break her own single-season school record, she is 276 kills away from becoming the first Albertson player to record
2,000 kills in a career. Price also has
a team-high 111 digs this season, giving her 1,387 for her ‘Yote career, just
207 behind the total Brecia
Gamett recorded from 1998-2001.
BAILEY
CONSISTANT: Making the transition
from basketball to volleyball hasn’t seemed to affect blocker Kristen Bailey (Fountain Green, Utah / Snow JC). The junior
is averaging 2.1 kills and 0.8 blocks per game, not bad for someone who hadn’t
hit the Tachikara since high school.
REGIONAL
POLL: With a pair of victories this weekend,
Southern Oregon maintained their No. 1 ranking in the latest NAIA Region I
poll. With a 1-1 week, the Coyotes
dropped from No. 6 to No. 8 in the poll.
The complete poll is as follows – No. 1 Southern Oregon, No. 2
Concordia, No. 3 Montana Tech, No. 4 Western Baptist, No. 5 Rocky Mountain, No.
6 Carroll, No. 7 Montana-Western, No. 8 Albertson, No. 9 Oregon Tech, No. 10
Lewis-Clark State. Southern (No. 13)
and Carroll (No. 21) were ranked in last week’s NAIA national poll, with
Concordia and Montana Tech receiving votes.
HOME
SWEET HOME: One of the biggest home
stretches in school history takes place over the next month. The Coyotes will play 11 of their next 14
dates at home, including a run of eight straight in October.
HEAVY
HITTERS HEADED TO CALDWELL: The
home schedule opens this weekend two of the top four teams in the region come
calling on the Treasure Valley. The
front end of the weekend doubleheader has the Lady ‘Yotes meeting Western Baptist. Longtime
head coach Tracy Smith has the Warriors (2-0 CCC, 7-2 overall) playing well,
having dropped matches to only No. 9 ranked Westmont and Notre Dame de Namur
(Calif.). The tandem of Liz Howe (4.3
kills per game) and Kendra Mitchell (3.4 k/g) have been outstanding this
year. Last season, each team won 3-0
decisions on their own home floor, with Albertson holding a 12-9 all-time advantage. Saturday, Albertson will try to be the first
team since the 1999 season to stop Concordia
in a Cascade Conference match. The Cavaliers (4-0, 5-2) ran their win
streak to 51-in-a-row by sweeping Cascade and Warner Pacific this weekend. New head coach Christopher Duenow has the
luxury of having a two-time All-American setter Mindy Wallis to distribute the
ball. Concordia has won seven matches
in a row against the Coyotes, and holds a 13-5 all-time advantage versus
Albertson.
INSIDE
THE CONFERENCE: Oregon Tech rebounded
from its loss Friday to the Coyotes to defeat Eastern Oregon and Cal
Tech. Speaking of Eastern, the
Mountaineers, along with Warner
Pacific, are the lone teams remaining in the Cascade
Conference without a victory. Northwest took round one in the Washington state battle with Evergreen, although both teams dropped loop fares with
Western Baptist. Southern Oregon ran its win streak to six straight with their wins
over Eastern and Albertson. Cascade is still searching for its first conference win since 2000.

LAST
WEEK: at Westminster Invitational, Salt Lake City,
Utah – won vs. Alliant International, 3-2 (OT); lost at Westminster, 4-0.
COMING
UP: vs. Northwest, Friday, 4 p.m.; vs. Evergreen,
Sunday, 2 p.m.
COYOTES
TOP ALLIANT IN OVERTIME: Albertson head
coach John Calpin knew that the match-up with Alliant International
would be one of the toughest his team would face all season – and he was
right. Roger Aguliar (Payette, Idaho
/ Payette HS) headed home the game
winner nine minutes into overtime, as the Coyotes stopped the Timberwolves, 3-2
at the Westminster Invitational. The
Coyotes trailed 2-1 at the break, before Coe Michaelson (East Wenatchee,
Wash. / Northwest Nazarene) buried
his second goal of the afternoon in the back of the net to tie the score midway
through the second half. Hometown
product Jake Steele (Salt Lake City, Utah / Viewmont HS) wowed fans with a pair of point-blank stops late in
regulation to preserve the tie.
CARDS
FALLING FROM THE SKY: Yellow cards are
a common factor in an intense, physical soccer match. But ten cards in a fast, non-physical match-up is a big question
mark. Both AIU and Albertson had five
cards assigned to each team, including a yellow and red card to sophomore Jason Southward (Hailey, Idaho / Wood River HS), which forced the Coyotes to play the final 27
minutes of the match a man-down.
WESTMINSTER
WINS BATTLE OF TOP TWO TEAMS: Playing
without three regular starters, host Westminster took advantage of a days rest to
pummel the Albertson goal, stopping the Coyotes, 4-0. In a battle of the top two teams in the NAIA Region I, the
Griffins used quick transition in its counter-attack to dictate the pace and
tempo of the contest. The loss was
particularly tough for Albertson, considering the ‘Yotes defeated Westminster
in last season’s regional semifinal.
BANGED
UP IN SALT LAKE: The injury jumped up and
bit the Coyotes this weekend on the Wasatch Front, as a trio of regulars fought
nagging injuries. Freshman defender Shane Carmody (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) tried a go of it on Saturday with a strained groin
muscle, but was lifted four minutes into the contest. Carmody did not play in the Sunday loss to Westminster. Another defender, Brad Brooks (Meridian, Idaho / Meridian HS), played all 99 minutes against Alliant, the
majority with a bruised knee. The
sophomore was unable to recover in 24 hours and sat out the Sunday match. Even leading scorer, Coe Michaelson, has
been hampered by strains in both of his groin muscles. Despite the injuries,
Michaelson played all 189 minutes in the two matches.
COYOTES
FALL IN REGIONAL POLL: Albertson is
likely to drop in the NAIA National Poll following its lopsided loss to
Westminster. The Griffins (8-3) took
over the top spot in this week’s regional rankings, with the No. 15 ranked
Coyotes moving into the No. 2 spot. The
two teams are followed by Simon Fraser (5-1), Western Baptist (3-2-2), and
Concordia (4-3).
PUGET
SOUNDERS HEADED TO THE DESERT: It
is always a culture-shock for teams west of the Cascade Mountains to make the
trek into the Treasure Valley. This
weekend, the Coyotes play host to the two Washington state teams, who always
seem to enjoy the balmy Idaho weather in comparison to their typical water
faucet in the sky. Friday, Northwest heads into Caldwell riding a two-game winning
streak. The Eagles (2-3) have losses to
Whitworth and Puget Sound, a pair of top NCAA Division III programs, but have
stopped George Fox and Puget Sound Christian in recent matches, the latter a
school-record 16-0 blowout of the Anchormen.
Bryan Chud is the go-to play for Northwest, having earned a trio of
All-Cascade Conference honors.
Albertson swept the Eagles last season and hold a 12-2 all-time
advantage. Sunday, Evergreen makes their annual pilgrimage from the forests
surrounding Olympia to Yoteville. The
Geoducks (1-3) dropped a 1-0 decision to George Fox last week, but are a much
improved team. Albertson has a 7-1-1
all-time mark against Evergreen, winning the last six straight by a combined
25-1 margin.
AROUND
THE CONFERENCE: Western Baptist had
a sub-par week, dropping from the ranks of the unbeaten with back-to-back
losses to Willamette and Linfield. Cascade also dropped its only match of the week, a 3-0 decision to Pacific. Highs and lows were the name of the game for
Concordia, as the Cavs dropped a tough 2-1 match to Simon
Fraser, but rallied for a 5-1 win over NCAA Division II Humboldt State, behind
a school-record five assists from Justan Woolvert. Every team in the loop has now recorded a victory, as Warner Pacific picked up a 3-1 win over George Fox to join the rest
of the group with a “W” in the win column.

MORE INFORMATION ON THE
COYOTES: For game stories, statistics,
and information regarding the Albertson men’s soccer program, head to the
official site of Coyote soccer: www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/menssoccer.htm.
LAST WEEK: Won at Cascade, 4-1; lost at Western Baptist, 6-1.
COMING UP: vs.
Oregon Tech, Friday, 2 p.m.; vs. Southern Oregon, Saturday, 4 p.m.
CASCADE THE REMEDY FOR COYOTES: After a difficult trip to
Portland last weekend, the Albertson women’s soccer team wanted a second chance
to redeem themselves in the Rose City.
Enter Cascade College, who provided the field and necessary 90 minutes
for the Lady ‘Yotes to post a 4-1 victory last Friday. Adria Carley (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS) got the Coyotes on the board in the first
half, heading home a cross from Chelsea Stevens(Bend, Ore. / BYU-Idaho)
in the 23rd
minute. Becky Robertson (Othello, Wash. /
Columbia Basin CC) added an unassisted goal to open the second half scoring, before the
T-Birds got on the board in the 69th minute.
That would be it for the hosts, however, as Alyssa Latham (Walla Walla, Wash. /
Walla Walla CC) took a Robertson feed to make it 3-1, and Carley headed home a Latham
cross to finish the scoring. A
banged-up Danielle
Dorsch (Boise,
Idaho / Capital HS) made 11 saves on the afternoon to preserve the Coyote win, ending a
two-game skid against the T-Birds.
MORE ON THE WIN: Albertson held a 23-12 shot
advantage, and according to the final numbers provided by Cascade, did not
commit a foul during the contest. For
Carley, it was her first multiple goal game – she scored four goals in four
separate games as a freshman.
BAPTIST CONTINUES TO DOMINATE ‘YOTES: There has been a big
swing in the series between Albertson and Western Baptist over the years. The Coyotes won the first five meetings with
the Warriors, dating back to 1993, but since 1995 – Western has rattled off 13
straight wins, including a 6-1 victory last Saturday in Salem. The 2001 conference player-of-the-year,
KeriAnn Lawson scored three goals – including one just 30 seconds into the
contest – pacing the WBC attack. The
Lady ‘Yotes did, however, score for the first time against the Warriors in over
360 minutes, when Latham took a Wendy Ross (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) pass and found paydirt
to avoid the shutout.
CONSISTENCY SPELLED L-A-T-H-A-M: Since transferring to
Albertson this fall, Alyssa Latham has proven to be everything that soccer
director John
Calpin and
head coach Aisha Reed had hoped for.
The junior has used her quickness and shot taking ability to score a
team high four goals, three assists, and 26 shots. Paired with Becky Robertson, the Coyotes have a dangerous one-two
scoring punch.
BUMPS AND BRUISES: Although bumps, bruises,
and muscle strains are the name of the game, no major injuries are plaguing the
Lady ‘Yotes. Both Wendy Ross and
Danielle Dorsch played this weekend, despite being questionable with nagging
injuries.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: The third regional
rankings were released today, with No. 3 ranked Simon Fraser leading the
pack. The Clan are followed by No. 17
ranked Concordia, and unranked teams Western Baptist, Rocky Mountain, and
Carroll.
AFTER A SIX-PACK, HOME IS WHERE THE GAME IS: After a 2-4 start to the
season on the road, the Coyotes begin a stretch of four games in five outings
at Symms Field. The home slate opens up
on Friday against pesky Oregon Tech, who has proven the past two seasons to give the
‘Yotes fits the past two seasons. The
Owls (0-1 CCC, 2-2) opened the 2002 season with shutout wins over Simpson and
Mills of Northern California, but have dropped back-to-back games to
CSU-Monterey Bay and Warner Pacific.
New head coach Kevin Sims is looking for more magic against Albertson,
as the Owls are 1-1-2 all-time against the Coyotes. Saturday, head coach Jose Chavez and Southern Oregon hope to somehow figure
out Albertson College. The Raiders
(1-0, 2-2), despite advancing to the Cascade Conference tournament the past two
seasons, have struggled with the Coyotes in all four previous meetings. Each of the Raider-Coyote matches have been
one-goal affairs, with Albertson winning both matches in Caldwell, and Southern
winning both games in Ashland. SOU
defeated Warner Pacific on Friday, 3-0, but lost a 5-0 decision to Western
Washington on Sunday.
AROUND THE CONFERENCE: Eastern Oregon remains the lone team in
the loop to have not won a game on the pitch this season. The Mountaineers, after giving up 15 goals
in two earlier matches in the week, scored two goals on 11 shots at Cascade, but the T-Birds posted
their first win with a 3-2 decision.
First-year Warner Pacific continued to impress with overall team speed, as
the Knights recorded a split on their trip south to Southern and Tech. Both Concordia and Western Baptist remained unbeaten in
conference play with wins this week, heading towards Saturday’s battle for
first-place. Evergreen had a tough week, losing
a tight 2-0 game at Concordia, then losing to NCAA Division II Seattle
University on Sunday afternoon.
