LAST
WEEK: Defeated Western Baptist, 3-1; lost to
Concordia, 3-2.
COMING
UP: at Northwest, Friday, 7 p.m.; at Evergreen,
Saturday, 7 p.m.
ALMOST
ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH: Given a golden
opportunity to end Concordia University’s Cascade Conference record of 52
consecutive loop victories on Saturday night, the Albertson volleyball team
just could not get over the hump. The
Cavaliers rallied from a two games to one deficit to stop the Coyotes in
five. After
holding the Coyotes to a negative .167 attack percentage in winning game four
30-23, the Concordia fell behind 9-6 in the decisive game. However, kills
by Kelly Holleran and Krista Ekeberg, sandwiched between two Albertson attack
errors gave Concordia the lead for good, as the Cavs defeated the Lady ‘Yotes
for the eighth consecutive time.
COMMENTS FROM THE COACH: Head coach Liz Mendiola on her team’s
effort against the No. 22 squad in the NAIA - "We competed tonight, but
the bottom line is that we need to be mentally strong. “At crucial times, we seemed to play
tense. This week we need to refocus and to a level consistency."
TIPTON “BACK”, SORT OF: The irritating back of senior blocker Katy
Tipton (Ontario, Ore. / Ontario HS) has been an up-and-down endeavor
this season. After missing the first
two trips of the year, Tipton has played in every game of the past two Friday
matches, only to have the back flare up on Saturday, limiting her play and
effectiveness. Even with the pain, she
is one of the more feared players in the CCC, recording 16 kills and four
blocks in the victory over Western Baptist, and five kills in just over one
game against Concordia. Tipton is also
inching closer to the 1,000 career kills mark following the weekend. She has recorded 931 spikes in her Coyote
career.
PRICE “ACE”ING HER WAY TO THE
TOP: With three more aces last
weekend, Kristyn Price (Bellevue, Idaho / Wood River HS) has
moved into second-place on the all-time service ace list. She sits just 16 aces behind Jesse Evett,
who tallied 191 during her career.
Following the weekend action, the senior three-time all-regional
selection has upped her career kill mark to 1,757 – inching closer to that
elusive 2,000 mark, and is now 187 digs behind the career mark set by Brecia
Gamett.
THE WIN OVER WESTERN: With
Kristyn Price and Katy Tipton combining for 36 kills, the Lady ‘Yotes
handed Western Baptist their first CCC loss, a 3-1 decision on Friday
night. Albertson rallied from an 18-13
deficit in game one to win 31-29, thanks in part to a .378 attack
percentage. Albertson ran off the final four points of the game,
including a Kahli Mann (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS) service ace
and an Amanda Basañez (Elko, Nev./ College of Southern Idaho) kill
to end it. After dropping game two,
Price and Tipton dominated the final two games, recording 26 of their 36
put-aways.
DIGGING IT UP: It was a good weekend
for the defensive specialists for the Coyotes.
Sophomore Kahli Mann led Albertson with 12 digs on Friday night, and
added 15 more on Saturday. Junior libero
Amber Igoe (Blackfoot, Idaho / Firth
HS) had a career high 21 digs in the loss to Concordia.
REGIONAL
POLL: With their victory over then regional No. 4
Western Baptist and taking No. 2 Concordia to the brink, Albertson has moved
from No. 8 to No. 5 in this week’s NAIA Region I rankings. This is the highest the Lady ‘Yotes have
been in the poll this season. The
complete list – 1. Southern Oregon (9-2), 2. Concordia (7-2), 3. Montana Tech
(13-7), 4. Montana-Western (9-8), 5. Albertson (5-7), 6. Western Baptist (9-3),
7. Rocky Mountain (6-3), 8. Carroll (9-10), 9. Lewis-Clark State (8-6), 10.
Oregon Tech (10-3).
HOME
SWEET HOME: Following this weekend’s
trip to Seattle, and a jaunt next Tuesday to Northwest Nazarene, the Coyotes
will play their next nine games in the friendly confines of the J.A. Albertson
Activities Center. Included in that set
is the 2002 Blocktoberfest Tournament and a rematch against No. 13 ranked
Southern Oregon.
COYOTES
AND EAGLES AND CLAMS, OH MY: After
playing what may be the top-four teams in the loop coming into the season
during the first two weeks of CCC play, Albertson heads to Washington state for
their final road trip in nearly a month.
Second-year head coach Shaun Kupferberg has Northwest playing solid ball,
having won there of their last four matches.
The Eagles (3-2 CCC, 6-3 overall) are led by swingers Amanda Peterson
(4.0 kills per game) and Lisa Langmade (.364 attack percentage). The Coyotes have never lost to Northwest in
11 previous meetings. Then it is on to Evergreen, where Bill Lash saw his team pick up their first
conference victory last weekend at Cascade.
The Geoducks (1-4, 2-10), a second-year program, are led by blocker
Courtney Brandon (3.2 kills/game). Albertson
swept the two meetings between the clubs last season.
INSIDE
THE CONFERENCE: It took Southern Oregon three games to stop Oregon Tech in the first battle
between those two rivals, as the Raiders maintained their unblemished CCC
record. Western Baptist rebounded from
their loss to Albertson to defeat Eastern
Oregon, handing the Mountaineers their
fifth-straight loss. Warner Pacific won its first conference match in 12 years when the
topped Evergreen on Friday night. Cascade sits in the cellar alongside Eastern, as the T-Birds dropped matches to
Evergreen and Northwest. The big
battles this week include Southern Oregon at Concordia and Oregon Tech at
Western Baptist.

LAST WEEK: Defeated Oregon Tech, 3-1; Defeated Southern Oregon,
3-2
COMING UP: at
Eastern Oregon, Friday, 4 p.m. (PDT); vs. Eastern Oregon, Saturday, 2 p.m.
THE BROOMS WERE OUT: For the first time since
the 2000 season, the Albertson women’s soccer team successfully completed a
weekend Cascade Conference sweep, stopping both Oregon Tech and Southern
Oregon. The wins move the Coyotes into
a third-place tie with Warner Pacific, and even up their overall record at 4-4.
EQUALING (AND SURPASSING) THE PAST: The wins helped the Lady
‘Yotes equal their entire win total from the 2001 season. In fact, the last time an Albertson women’s
soccer team won more than four games was the 1996 season. Outside of the 8-3 mark during the 1989
season (school record for wins), no women’s soccer team has finished above
.500.
ROBERTSON EARNS PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK NOD: For the second time in
her career, striker Becky Robertson (Othello, Wash. /
Columbia Basin CC) has been named Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I Player-of-the-Week. Robertson was the catalyst in the ‘Yotes two
wins this weekend, scoring the game-winning goal in both contests. The senior tallied a goal and an assist
against Oregon Tech and two goals and an assist against Southern Oregon. For the season, she has scored five goals
and assisted on three others.
MORE ON ROBERTSON: Following
her outstanding weekend, Robertson has moved into second-place on the all-time
goals scored and points list. She has
scored 21 goals and assisted on four others in her two seasons as a Coyote,
good for 46 points (two for a goal, one for an assist). Former standout player and coach Kristine Halter (Jones) holds both school
record – 30 career goals and 80 career points.
FOR SOUTHERN, CALDWELL EQUALS DOOM: Three trips to the Treasure Valley for Jose
Chavez’s Southern Oregon club, three unhappy trips back to Ashland. Solid second-half defense preserved a
one-goal halftime edge as the Coyotes stopped the Raiders Saturday, 3-2. SOU had four great scoring chances during
the final 15 minutes of the game, but Albertson keeper Danielle Dorsch (Boise,
Idaho / Capital HS) and her defense stood their ground. Jacqueline
Fahrney, who scored one of the two Raider first half goals, beat Dorsch to her
left, but tripped in front of the net, knocking the would-be tying goal off the
left post. Katie Emerson also had two chances, but was stoned by
Dorsch and sweeper Kristi Dalsoglio (Boise, Idaho / Meridian HS). Becky Robertson figured on all three Lady
'Yote goals, getting Albertson on the board just nine minutes into the
game. Off an indirect kick, Chelsea Stevens (Bend, Ore. /
BYU-Idaho) chipped a ball to Alyssa Latham (Walla Walla, Wash. /
Walla Walla HS), who left a perfect cross to Robertson, and the senior
flicked home the goal. After Amanda
Pratt tied the score for SOU 12 minutes later, Latham gobbled up a Robertson
cross and found the top shelf for a 2-1 lead.
Following Emerson's goal in the 32nd minute, Robertson knocked home the
game winner, driving a shot through Raider keeper Patti McCoy.
PITMAN SHINES IN WIN OVER TECHSTERS: Sophomore Heidi Pitman (Bishop, Calif. / Bishop
Union HS) scored
two goals and solid defense kept the visitors at bay, as Albertson stopped
Oregon Tech, 3-1, on Friday. The
forward opened the scoring early, converting a Becky Robertson cross. After Robertson made it 2-0 with a blast to
the top shelf, and the Owls countered with a picture-perfect corner kick for a
goal, Pitman struck again, finding the net after Alyssa Latham threaded the
needle with a touch pass.
HERE COME THE MOUNTIES: A winning streak will
end on Friday, as both Albertson and Eastern Oregon come into the 4 p.m.
battle in La Grande on a roll. The
Mountaineers (1-4, 1-8) dropped their first eight games of the season by a 37-3
margin (including a 3-0 whitewashing by Albertson at the Arthur D. Ortman
Invitational), but stunned Oregon Tech last Saturday, rallying for a 2-1
win. Eastern had a rash of early-season
injuries, but has all of the key members of their team riding high. Following Friday’s match, the two teams will
have a return bout on Saturday in Caldwell.
The Lady ‘Yotes have never lost to the Mounties, winning four matches
and tying another.
AROUND THE CONFERENCE: With the losses at
Eastern and Albertson, Oregon Tech remains the lone team in the loop without a
conference win. On the flip side, Concordia took over the top spot
in the conference, defeating second-place Western Baptist, 2-1, on Saturday. The Coyotes are deadlocked with Warner Pacific in the third-spot, but
the Knights are reeling after a 7-1 drubbing by Concordia. Evergreen split a pair of games last week, losing 4-1 at
Western, but stopping Cascade, 5-2. The
Geoducks are tied with Southern Oregon, each having two conference wins. This week, key match-ups include Warner
Pacific at Evergreen, and both Evergreen and Concordia at Southern Oregon.

LAST WEEK:
Defeated Northwest, 5-0; Lost to Evergreen,
2-1.
COMING
UP: at Cascade, Friday, 4 p.m. (PDT); at
Concordia, Saturday, 1 p.m. (PDT)
AGUILAR
NAMED CASCADE CONFERENCE PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK: A huge single-game effort by Roger
Aguilar (Payette, Idaho / Payette
HS) landed the midfielder Cascade Conference
Player-of-the-Week honors. The junior
tied the school record for goals in a game with a four goal explosion in the
5-0 victory over Northwest last Friday afternoon. He joins Matt Blazek and current teammate Coe Michaelson (East Wenatchee, Wash. / Northwest Nazarene) as the only players in the 19 years of the Albertson
men’s program to score four goals in one outing.
SPEAKING
OF MICHAELSON: With a goal and two
assists this week, the senior All-American has moved into third-place on the
all-time scoring list. Michaelson now
has scored 34 goals and racked up another 30 assists in his two-plus seasons
with the Coyotes. He is closing fast on
the school-record for helpers, trailing Matt Blazek by just five assists. Blazek is the career leader in goals (69),
assists (35), and points (173), with early 1990s standout Derek Jordan behind
him (55 goals and 25 assists from 1989-92).
COYOTES
DROP OUT OF NATIONAL POLL: The 4-0 loss to
Westminster a week ago Sunday dropped Albertson from No. 15 in the NAIA
national poll to the realm of the “others receiving votes”. Westminster moved up to that same No. 15
slot in last week’s poll. However,
things will change this week – coupled with losses by both the Coyotes and Westminster,
and solid play from Simon Fraser – look for SFU to jump mightily in the
rankings.
REGIONAL
POLL (Week 4): 1. Simon Fraser (6-2),
2. Westminster (9-4), 3. Albertson (3-2), 4. Concordia (6-3), 5. Warner Pacific
(2-4-1).
MORE ON
VICTORY OVER NORTHWEST: Many thought the
match between Northwest and the Coyotes would be tight, considering the Eagles
had ran off 16 goals in its win over Puget Sound Christian earlier in the
week. However, a solid defensive
effort, and four Roger Aguilar goals gave the ‘Yotes a 5-0 win in their Cascade
Conference opener. Of the four goals
scored by Aguilar, the prettiest was a feed by freshman Tyler Seaman (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) in front of the box that Aguilar took out of the air
and blasted home. With the shutout,
senior keeper Jake
Steele (Salt Lake City, Utah /
Viewont HS) moved into tenth-place
on the all-time NAIA career shutouts list.
The white-washing was the 24th of his illustrious career.
CLAMMED
UP: Two early first half goals and stellar play
by their goalkeeper led Evergreen to a 2-1 upset of the Coyotes, Sunday
afternoon. Albertson held a 19-6 shot
advantage, including five point-blank tries in the second half, but could only
muster a Jason Southward (Hailey, Idaho / Wood River HS) header off a John Mitchell (Boise, Idaho /
Boise State) chip in the box. Aguilar had a chance to tie the score in the
final ten seconds, but his try went wide left as the Geoducks defeated
Albertson for the first time since 1987.
CONFERENCE
UP FOR GRABS: This could be one of the
most interesting seasons of Cascade Conference men’s soccer on record, if the
first week of loop games are indicative of the rest of the season. Only Concordia, one of the two Albertson
opponents this weekend, holds an unbeaten record, while Western Baptist, one of the teams favored for a playoff berth in
the preseason, is oh-fer. The rest of
the conference – Albertson, Cascade, Evergreen, Northwest, and Warner
Pacific, each split their first two league
matches. Interesting battles –
Concordia at Cascade, Western at Evergreen, and the Coyotes two showdowns in
Portland will each have an effect on the conference and regional standings.
OFF TO
PORTLAND, SEARCHING FOR CONSISTANCY: After
the lackluster effort against Evergreen, the Coyotes must step their play up a
notch to preserve their seven match Cascade Conference road win streak. Up first is Cascade, the only team during
the 2001 season to defeat the Coyotes twice.
The Thunderbirds (1-1, 2-5) have been in all but one match, and return
standout Chris Langford (two goals, two assists), who scored all five goals
against Albertson last season, including the game-winner in both T-Bird wins in
Caldwell. Despite the rough go of it last
year, the ‘Yotes have won 15 of the previous 19 meetings with Cascade. On Saturday, Concordia puts its three-game
win streak on the line. Last season,
Dan Birkey’s Cavaliers (2-0, 6-3) split their season series with Albertson,
with each team winning on the opposition’s home turf. This season, the tandem of Joseph Beytebiere (eight goals, two
assists) and Brian Iblings (seven goals, four assists) have been outstanding,
as has Justan Wolvert (two goals, nine assists) – who set a school record with
five assists against Humboldt State.
This will be the 27th meeting between the two schools with Albertson
holding a slim 13-12-1 advantage.
