INTERNET AND LIVE STATS: Due to conflicts with the Albertson College server, the Eastern Oregon and Concordia men’s basketball games will not be broadcast on the internet.  However, Saturday’s game at Eastern Oregon will have live stats available online at www.eou.edu/athletics, and Tuesday’s game at Concordia will have a live internet broadcast available at www.gocugo.com.  Things will be fixed in time for the next home game on Jan. 16.

A JUMP TO #5 IN THE POLLS: Riding a four-game win streak and toting an 11-4 record, the Albertson men’s basketball team climbed from No. 10 in the final NAIA Division II national poll of 2003 to No. 5 in the first installment of 2004.  The ranking represents the highest ranking for the Coyotes since Mark Owen became head coach, and is the loftiest mark since the 1999-2000 season.  The ‘Yotes have been ranked higher than No. 5 on numerous occasions – including a No. 1 ranking in the 1991 preseason poll.

FAMILIAR FOES RANKED ABOVE ‘YOTES: The four teams separating Albertson and the No. 1 spot in the poll are all familiar to the Coyotes.  Top-ranked Jamestown (N.D.) defeated the ‘Yotes 74-65 in last season’s NAIA Tournament, while No. 2 Taylor (Ind.) was knocked off by Albertson, 53-44 in the same tourney.  Third-ranked Siena Heights (Mich.) was defeated by the Coyotes, 96-88, in the 2001 NAIA Tournament, with No. 4 William Jewell having their last loss of this season coming at the hands of the ‘Yotes, 67-65, in Las Vegas.

COYOTES SIT ATOP LEAGUE STANDINGS: Four games down, 14 to go – that is what the Albertson men’s basketball team has in front of starting the second week of 2004.  The Coyotes sit alone atop the Cascade Conference at 4-0, their best loop start since the 1999-2000 season when they opened up 5-0 and 11-1.  No. 19 ranked Eastern Oregon and a much improved Southern Oregon team are at 3-1, with No. 25 ranked Concordia at 2-1.

SENIOR STEPS UP AT RIGHT TIME: The Coyotes had just watched a 13-point second half lead evaporate before their eyes when Mark Owen called a crucial timeout.  Pulling guard Andy Harper (Idaho Falls, Idaho / Columbia Basin CC) aside, the chief told the student, “You are a senior – it is time to step up and make some baskets.”  The pep talk worked, as Harper drained a trey with two minutes left to put Albertson up 61-60, then hit a game-winning eight-footer in the paint to cap the 63-62 win.  He had 11 points and four rebounds on the night, raising his career point total to 735.

CONSISTANT EFFORT FROM ALL-AMERICAN: Forward Tom Perkes (Spokane, Wash. / Big Bend CC) just gets the job done.  The senior All-America candidate averaged 18 points and seven rebounds in the two wins, including 13-of-16 shooting from the foul line.  For the season, Perkes ranks eighth in the CCC in scoring average (16.1), seventh in blocked shots (0.80 per game), tenth in free throw percentage (.797), and 11th in field goal percentage (5.12).

TALE OF TWO HALVES: This headline could not be more appropriate in describing Friday’s game at Warner Pacific.  Albertson built a 24-point first half lead on the strength of 75-percent shooting from the floor.  However, the Coyotes managed just four second half field goals and hung on for a 68-63 victory.  It was the best shooting, and worst shooting periods of the season.

SECOND-HALF DULDRUMS: The second half of games have not been the Coyotes friend over the last month.  Ever since Albertson hung a 57-26 second half rout on Rocky Mountain at the Golden Rule Shoot-Out, the ‘Yotes have struggled after halftime.  In the past five games (including two overtime periods), Albertson is shooting just 50-of-133 (.376 percent) from the floor after halftime, and just 16-of-51 (.314 percent) from outside the arc – and averaging just 30 points in the second half.

RASMUSSEN, HANSEN SEE MOST MINUTES OF YEAR: Junior Zach Rasmussen (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) saw his most action of the 2003-04 season on Saturday night – spelling the Coyote big men that were mired in foul trouble.  Rasmussen hit a pair of first half three-pointers and finished with eight points in 20 minutes of action.  One night earlier, Lance Hansen (Blackfoot, Idaho / Casper JC) saw 12 minutes of action – and was on the floor at the end of the game, in the ‘Yotes win at Warner Pacific.  Although he did not score, Hansen was key in the defensive effort of the Coyotes.

DEAN’S LIST: Of the 150 Albertson College students that were named to the Dean’s List for the fall term, 15 were student-athletes.  Two men’s basketball players – Andy Harper and Lance Hansen, were among those selected.

HIP-HIP-HORRAY FOR BUS DRIVER STEVE: One of the silent supporters of the Coyotes over the past two seasons has been Steve Cuellar, the team’s bus driver from the Caldwell Transportation Company.  Along with being an avid ‘Yote fan, it is Cuellar’s job to get the men’s and women’s basketball team’s to-and-from road destinations.  Last weekend was a hairy experience for all, as a 13-hour trek west on I-84 to Portland through white-out conditions was followed by an 11-hour trip home through ice and snow.  Those of us on the bus, along with parents and fans, thank you for your job well done!

SPEAKING OF A STEVE: Speaking of another Steve, center Steve Humphreys (Reno, Nev. / Lassen CC) continues to recuperate from a late November knee injury.  The junior has been practicing for the past two weeks with a protective knee brace and all signs are pointing towards a return to the court this weekend.  Before the injury, Humphreys was averaging nine points and five rebounds, and continues to rank No. 4 in the CCC in blocked shots (1.0 per game).

EASTERN RANKED FOR FIRST-TIME IN 11 YEARS: Mark Owen will be the first to tell anyone that the Albertson men have the toughest time, year-in and year-out, playing in Quinn Coliseum at Eastern Oregon.  This year’s match-up on Saturday has the Mountaineers (7-3, 3-1 CCC) ranked No. 19 in the nation, Eastern’s first national ranking since 1993.  Art Furman’s club has put up big numbers this season (averaging 85 points a night), and has four players averaging at least 14 points a game (Larry Smith 19.7, Bryan Rabas 15.6, Trevor Exline 14.1, Tyree Jones 14.1).  The Albertson-Eastern rivalry is the longest continued rivalry that the Coyotes have currently (the two schools have played every season since 1929), with Albertson leading the series 74-35 (since 1950).  However, the ‘Yotes have lost three of their last four trips to La Grande, including a 75-72 loss on the final day of the regular-season, sending Albertson on the road for the CCC Tournament.

ROAD TRIP FINALLY ENDS AT CONCORDIA: The stretch of four consecutive and 21-of-25 games on the road for the Coyotes will end with a rare Tuesday tilt in Portland against No. 25 ranked Concordia.  The first of two Tuesday games for the ‘Yotes in the Willamette Valley, the Cavaliers (10-5, 2-1) are one of the premier teams in the CCC, despite dropping a 68-54 decision to Western Baptist last Friday.  Brad Barbarick had his team one win away from a national tournament berth last season, but it was the Coyotes who handed Concordia a 79-60 loss – knocking the Cavs out of the playoffs.  The nucleus of that team is back, led by All-Conference players Andre Johnson (14.4 ppg) and Nate Ferrier (11.9 ppg, 7.1 rpg).  Second-year player Brandon Erlandson (15.5 ppg) has been a big help to the Cavalier attack that is shooting a CCC-best .401 percent from outside the arc.  Concordia took two-of-three from the Coyotes last season, but it is Albertson with a 34-8 series edge, dating back to 1980.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (4-7, 2-2 CCC): Lady ‘Yotes sit in middle of CCC pack as trip to Eastern Oregon awaits

LAST WEEK: lost at Northwest Nazarene, 82-62; lost at Warner Pacific, 72-65; won at Cascade, 73-55.

COMING UP: at Eastern Oregon, Saturday, 5:30 p.m. (PST)

INTERNET BROADCASTS: Eleven Albertson women’s basketball games will be broadcast live via the Albertson athletic website this winter.  Join Jordan Komoto and Jake McClean for all of the play-by-play at www.collegeofidaho.edu/webcam/athletics.asx - the internet home of Lady ‘Yote Basketball.  The next scheduled internet game will be Jan. 16 vs. Oregon Tech.

LIVE STATS: Live play-by-play statistics of Saturday’s game at Eastern Oregon can be accessed on the internet at www.eou.edu/athletics.

SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE: Two weeks into the 2003-04 Cascade Conference season and the Albertson women’s basketball team is right where every team began – sitting in the middle of the race.  The Lady ‘Yotes are tied for fifth-place, just one game out of the No. 2 spot, and two games back of front-running Oregon Tech.  Between OIT and the Coyotes are three one-loss teams – Eastern Oregon (Saturday’s opponent), along with Northwest and Warner Pacific, whom the squad has dropped close games to.

WEEKLY CONFERENCE POLL: Each week for the remainder of the season, the ten Cascade Conference coaches will ballot the top-five teams in the league – which will base the rankings for CCC teams in the NAIA Division II national poll.  This week, six of the ten coaches in the league voted, giving Oregon Tech the top spot.  OIT was followed by Northwest, Eastern Oregon, Warner Pacific, and Western Baptist.  The Lady ‘Yotes received votes in the poll, but was not among the top-five.

COTTERELL HAS OUTSTANDING WEEK: A key to the Lady ‘Yotes playing tough in all three games last week was the play of guard Dani Cotterell (Nampa, Idaho / Nampa HS).  The sophomore jumped into a tie for tenth in the CCC in scoring (11.8 ppg) by averaging over 17 points in the games against Northwest Nazarene, Warner Pacific, and Cascade.  Cotterell made 14 three-pointers during the week, including a season-high six treys against Warner Pacific.  She currently leads the conference in three-pointers made per game (3.07), ranks fifth in three-point percentage (.436), and ninth in field goal percentage (.465).

HOOTER A REBOUND MACHINE: Spending four months earlier this year jumping to spike or block balls has definitely helped Kasey Hooter (Nampa, Idaho / Walla Walla CC) prepare for the basketball season.  One of four multi-sport athletes on the team, the junior has been a terror on the glass since the volleyball season ended in late November.  Hooter has recorded eight-or-more rebounds in each of the six games that she has played, including ten-or-more boards in three consecutive games.  She ranks second in the league in rebounds per game (10.8), but more importantly, leads the loop in field goal percentage (.694).  Her top game this season was against Warner Pacific, scoring 13 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.

SPEAKING OF MULTI-SPORT ATHLETES: Other multi-sport athletes on the Lady ‘Yotes roster include senior Carley Williams (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS), who plays basketball and tennis; senior Alyssa Latham (Walla Walla, Wash. / Walla Walla CC), who plays basketball, softball, and is an All-American soccer player; and Angie Gribble (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) who plays basketball and is the starting shortstop on the Coyote softball team.

THACKER ONE OFF SCHOOL RECORD: Point-guard Krystal Thacker (Elko, Nev. / BYU-Idaho) set a career-high with ten assists against Warner Pacific on Friday night, just one dish off the single-game school record.  It was the most assists by a Lady ‘Yote in four years, and helped the senior move into third-place in the CCC in assists per game (3.7).

LADY ‘YOTES ROUT CASCADE: A 73-55 win on paper looks pretty convincing, but the way the Albertson women got out of the starting gates on Saturday night showed how big of a debacle it truly was.  Heidi Goicoechea (Burley, Idaho / Burley HS) scored ten of the Coyotes first 20 points, as Albertson built a 20-4 lead and never allowed the T-Birds back in the game.  Dani Cotterell helped the visitors open the second half on a 14-4 run by hitting four consecutive three-pointers on five trips down floor, and the rout was on.  Sarah Wilkin (Twin Falls, Idaho / Southwestern Oregon CC) shook off a tough first half to set a new career-high with nine rebounds, to go along with seven points.  The win ended a two-game losing streak to Cascade and handed the Thunderbirds their 12th consecutive loss.

SCORELESS STRETCH DOOMS ALBERTSON: After a 13-hour bus ride from Caldwell to Portland on Thursday (thanks to 400 miles of snow-covered I-84 from the Treasure Valley to the Rose City), Albertson took a 34-31 lead at halftime against a solid Warner Pacific club.  However, after building a six-point second half lead, the Lady ‘Yotes would watch their hosts go on a 19-1 run to take a 62-50 lead with just over five minutes remaining.  Albertson would close to within two points late in the game, but could not get over the hump.  Dani Cotterell led the team with 18 points, while Heidi Goicoechea scored 17, all coming in the first half.

N.N.U. RIDES SECOND HALF TO WIN: Albertson has not had much success against their Canyon County rival since women’s basketball resumed play in 1995.  2003 was no exception, as Northwest Nazarene completed a sweep of the Lady ‘Yotes with a 82-62 victory in Nampa last Monday.  Albertson kept it close in the first half, taking three point leads on four occasions and trailed just 45-41 at the intermission.  However, NNU scored the first eight points of the second half and led by as many as 23 in the win.  Dani Cotterell scored 14 of her game-high 19 points for the Coyotes, while Michelle Dyreng (Fruit Heights, Utah / Snow CC) registered her second double-double of the year with 14 points and ten rebounds.  However, Albertson was outscored 17-5 at the foul line and made just 8-of-34 shots in the second half.

CONFERENCE STAT LEADERS: As a team, the Lady ‘Yotes lead the Cascade Conference in three statistical categories as a team.  Albertson leads the loop in rebounding margin (+8.6), lowest opponents’ rebound average (33.6), and blocked shots per game (3.36).  The Coyotes rank second in the league in total rebounds per game (42.3) and assists per game (16.2), and third in field goal percentage (.413) and three-point percentage (.356).  Individually, Michelle Dyreng leads the CCC in blocked shots per game (1.7), while Kasey Hooter is first in the league in defensive rebounds (7.2) and second in offensive rebounds (3.6).  Heidi Goicoechea is seventh in assists per game (3.5) and is tied for tenth in scoring average (11.8).

RIVALRY WITH EASTERN: Possibly the biggest rival the Albertson women have developed over the past couple of season’s has been with their neighbors to the east, Eastern Oregon.  Since Reagan Rossi took over in 2001, the Albertson-Eastern rivalry has taken on a new meaning – with large crowds watching close games.  Although the Mountaineers (9-2, 3-1 CCC) have won 4-of-5 against the Coyotes during that stretch, three of the games have been one-possession games in the final minute of play.  Albertson did win the most important of the tilts, however, a 92-71 win at Quinn Coliseum in 2002 in a semifinal battle of the CCC Tournament.  The 2003-04 Eastern squad swept its games in Portland last weekend, with their two losses on the season coming against Northwest and Whitman.  The Mounties lead the loop in scoring average (78.6 ppg) and boast four players in double figures – led by All-America candidate Jaime Jo Cant (12.9 ppg).  Albertson owns the all-time series lead by a 13-5 margin.

DEAN’S LIST: Of the 150 students at Albertson College named to the Dean’s List this fall, 15 were Coyote student-athletes.  Two of them, sophomore Angie Gribble and freshman Annie Roeser (Homedale, Idaho / Homedale HS) are members of the women’s basketball team.

NOTE CHANGES IN GAME TIME: Unlike last season, game time for the nine Cascade Conference doubleheaders at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center have been changed.  Women’s games will begin at 5:30 p.m. this season (began at 6 p.m. last year), with the men’s contest to begin at 7:30 p.m. (began at 8 p.m. last year)  Fans are to be reminded that their ticket for each night is good for both the women’s and men’s games.
