GENERAL ATHLETICS NEWS:  

BASKETBALL SEASON TICKETS AND C.A.A. INFORMATION: Many folks are probably wondering why they have not received information regarding the Coyote Athletic Association and season tickets for the upcoming basketball season (2003-04 men’s hoop preview in this week’s ‘Yote Notes).  The athletic department is currently looking at restructuring the C.A.A., how it functions, and how it can not only represent the department better, but to help C.A.A. members as well.  New C.A.A. brochures are being develops, along with the season ticket order forms, and should be in the mail by early next week.  Never fear - the first home basketball game does not take place until November 21.

FIRST C.A.A. BOOSTER DINNER: Plans are to have the first Coyote Athletic Association booster dinner on October 27 – just prior to the Cascade Conference playoffs for soccer, and the start of the men’s basketball season in Montana.  Dinner and program will take place in the Simplot Dining Hall at 7 p.m.  More information regarding the event to come in next week’s ‘Yote Notes.

THINK AHEAD FOR LAS VEGAS?: This year, the Albertson men's basketball team will be playing two games in Las Vegas on November 7 and 8.  Airfare and hotel packages are available through Caldwell Travel at 459-3602.  A three-day, two-night package at The Orleans Hotel and Casino with round-trip airfair is $421 for a single person or $621 for a couple.   

SOFTBALL STEAK AND CRAB FEED: The Albertson softball team will be holding a Steak and Crab feed on Saturday, November 1, at the Boise Police Clubhouse.  Tickets for the event and auction are $25 and can be purchased from a Coyote softball player or by calling head coach Kelly Gibbons at 459-5113.

GOLFERS STRUGGLE IN THE WIND: The Albertson men's golf team competed Monday and Tuesday at the Bronco Round-Up at Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna.  The Coyotes had trouble with the windy conditions, placing ninth out of 11 teams, but defeated both squads that were not of an NCAA Division I caliber.  Leading the Coyotes was Travis Gibbens, who shot a 233 (+17) to come in tied for 30th.  One shot behind him was Aaron Vick at +18, with Jeff Masingill at +19.  The golfers will not compete again in an official capacity until the spring season.

 

MEN’S SOCCER (9-3, 6-2 CCC): ‘Yotes climb to No. 28 in rankings after 3-0 week, key CCC matches at Evergreen and Northwest this weekend

 

LAST WEEK: Defeated Concordia, 1-0; defeated Cascade, 9-0; defeated Walla Walla, 9-2.

‘YOTES SIT IN TIE FOR FIRST AFTER PERFECT WEEK: Albertson ran its winning streak to four matches in a row with home wins over Concordia, Cascade, and Walla Walla – moving the Coyotes into a three-way tie for first-place in the Cascade Conference.  The ‘Yotes, Concordia, and Warner Pacific have a two-point edge on fourth-place Western Baptist, and a five-point on fifth-place Evergreen, with a week and a half left in the regular-season.  Albertson is now 5-0 on its home pitch this season.

 

WHAT’S AT STAKE:  A spot in the Cascade Conference Tournament and an easier ride to the NAIA Regional.  The top-four teams in the league will battle for one or two spots in the regional, to be hosted by either Simon Fraser or Westminster.  The CCC regular-season champion gains a spot in the regional, along with the CCC Tournament champion. The other two berths (CCC teams and independents) are selected based on Longo rating in games before Oct. 31 (if the CCC regular season and tournament champ are the same, three berths are selected from Longo).  Currently, Albertson boasts a 208.3 rating in the Longo, much higher than the 192.8 they had in 2002 in earning an at-large bid to the regional, where they lost 5-0 to Simon Fraser.  Currently, only Simon Fraser (238.6) has a higher longo than the ‘Yotes, with Westminster  (208.3) deadlocked with Albertson.  Western Baptist (205.0) and Concordia (195.3) can easily make a final push with their Longos, while Warner Pacific (167.2) and Evergreen (160.9) would have no chance in advancing to regionals without a league berth.

 

COYOTES RECEIVE VOTES IN NATIONAL POLL: For the first time this season, Albertson received votes in the NAIA national poll.  With 11 voter points, the Coyotes were the third team listed on the “others receiving votes” category, putting Albertson at No. 28 in the nation – just four voter points away from the Top-25.  Albertson has been ranked nationally each of the last three seasons, rising to a school record No. 15 in the nation during September of 2002.  In the regional poll, Simon Fraser leads the group (No. 20 in the NAIA national poll, despite a 5-5-1 record), followed by the ‘Yotes.  Concordia, Warner Pacific, and Western Baptist round out the top-five.

 

CHANDLER WINS IT AGAINST CONCORDIA: Statistically, the Albertson men’s soccer team dominated Concordia last Friday afternoon – a 17-5 shot advantage and a 9-1 corner kick margin.  However, the Cavs held the ‘Yotes scoreless until a clutch Joe Chandler (Nampa, Idaho / University of Utah) goal with three minutes remaining in the match lifted Albertson to a 1-0 win.  Drake Jakovac (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) started the winning flurry, feeding a ball near the box that Dustin Crim (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) redirected to Chandler in front of the net, where the sophomore blasted a shot into the “Upper V”.

 

WAS IT OFFSIDES?: Despite having 2:41 left on the clock after the Coyote goal – the match was far from finished.  Concordia had two final runs – one a long Joey Graham run that saw his shot miss just wide to the right, the other a Luis Garcia shot that found the net – however, offsides was called on the play.  Fans and the linesman agreed – not one but two Cavalier players were past the last Albertson defender on the play, although others saw a Coyote player in the mix. 

 

HUBER OUTSTANDING: A key to the win was early in the match, when keeper Ryan Huber (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) stopped a Mike Stephen penalty kick.  After a Cavaliers player was fouled in the box, Stephan cracked the PK to the right of Huber, who collected the ball with a strong dive.  The blanking of Concordia, along with one the following day against Cascade, gives the sophomore a league-high four shutouts and a CCC-best 1.42 GAA.  Huber had a streak of 324 minutes without giving up a goal ended Tuesday against Walla Walla – only when the Wolves scored on another penalty kick.

 

CASCADE FALLS 9-0: Scoring flurries were the key to an Albertson 9-0 rout of winless Cascade on Saturday afternoon.  On three separate occasions, the ‘Yotes followed up a goal with another tally within 90 seconds of the previous goal.  Six different Coyotes scored goals, led by Jason Southward (Hailey, Idaho / Wood River HS), who recorded his third hat trick of his Coyote career.  Drake Jakovac got the ‘Yotes on the board just three minutes into the match, and the squad was never headed.  Joe Chandler added two goals and three assists, Ryan Abo (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) recorded a goal and two assists, and Brad Thornburg (Yreka, Calif. / Yreka HS) found the net to go along with an assist.  With 12 assists in the contest, Albertson equaled a team record that it broke earlier this season against Northwest.

 

DEFENSE SOLID: A major component of the win over Cascade was the effort of the Albertson defense, which did not allow the T-Birds a shot all afternoon.  Led by defensemen Drake Jakovac and Skiff Larson (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS), along with Brad Brooks (Meridian, Idaho / Meridian HS), John Mitchell (Boise, Idaho / Boise State), Ryan Abo, and Brad Thornburg – the Coyotes kept the ball out of the Cascade end of the pitch for the majority of the game.

 

FOUR GOALS IN A GAME, AGAIN: In the first 17 years of men’s soccer at the institution, only two players (Derek Jordan and Matt Blazek) recorded four goals in a contest.  However, in the past four seasons, five different Coyotes (Jared Larsen in 2000, Coe Michaelson in 2001, Roger Aguliar (Payette, Idaho / Payette HS) and Jason Southward in 2002) have equaled the school-record, including a four-goal performance by Joe Chandler in a 9-2 victory over Walla Walla on Tuesday afternoon.  Chandler scored three goals in a nine minute stretch of the second half in the rout.    Also getting in the goal column was Dustin Crim, Ryan Abo, Andrew Heisler (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS), with Southward knocking two home.

 

CALPIN NEARING 200: With his team 9-3 through the first 12 matches of the 2003 season, 18th year head coach John Calpin is just three wins away from the 200 mark in his illustrious career.  The native of York, England, has amassed a mark of 197-117-16 in his Albertson career (including three seasons as head coach of the women’s program).  Only 18 coaches (men or women) in NAIA history have achieved as many wins as Calpin.

 

LEAGUE LEADERS: With the influx of scoring over the past week, Albertson now leads the Cascade Conference in eight team categories – points per game (13.25), goals per game (4.17), assists (59), assists per game (4.92), least goals allowed (17), goals against average (1.42), shutouts (4), and fouls per game (15.08).  Individually, Joe Chandler, Jason Southward, and Ryan Abo flood the upper echelon of the CCC stat categories.  Chandler ranks second in assists, fourth in goals, points, and points per game.  Southward ranks third in points per game, fourth in goals and assists, and fifth in points.  Abo is second in the loop in assists, ninth in points per game, and tenth in points.  Ironically, 17 of the 19 position players on the Coyote roster have scored at least a goal or an assist this season.

 

SWING THROUGH WASHINGTON KEY TO PLAYOFF HOPES: With four games left in the regular-season, every game is crucial to the postseason hopes of the Coyotes.  At the top of their list is Friday’s tussle with Evergreen, whom Albertson defeated 5-2 in September.  A win over the speedy Geoducks (7-7-1, 4-4-1 CCC) would clinch a Cascade Conference tournament berth.  Evergreen is vying for their first winning season since 1995 and has a trio of scoring threats, including the CCC’s top scorer, Joe Gjertsen (23 goals, nine assists).  Nathan Ford (eight goals, nine assists), and Chris Langford (nine goals, six assists) are great playmakers, while keeper Tom Kneeshaw (1.95 GAA) returns after missing three games with a concussion.  Albertson holds a 9-2-1 all-time record against the Clams, including two straight in the series.  Saturday, the ‘Yotes head to the Field Turf in Kirkland to meet Northwest, who picked up their first win of the season last week against Walla Walla.  The Eagles (1-12-1, 0-8-1) have been outscored 67-9 in their nine conference games, but have a solid forward in Anthony Ricciardelli (five goals, two assists).  Albertson has won the past eight meetings and holds a 15-2 all-time advantage.

 

NOTE TIME CHANGE: The game time to Friday’s key tilt between the Coyotes and Evergreen has been moved up to 2 p.m. (PDT) in Olympia – due to possible darkness if the game went to overtime.

VOLLEYBALL (10-6, 6-3 CCC): Lady ‘Yotes set new school-record at Blocktoberfest, begin key weekend at OIT and Southern

 

LAST WEEK: Defeated Westminster, 3-0; defeated No. 16 Montana Tech, 3-0; defeated Victoria, 3-0; lost to Montana-Western, 3-1.

COYOTES ALONE IN THIRD-PLACE HEADING INTO WEEKEND: Things got more interesting in the Cascade Conference over this past weekend, even though Albertson and Eastern Oregon did not play a loop tilt.  Northwest, who sat in seventh-place, swept Concordia and Western Baptist, who in turn, each won at Evergreen.  Factoring in Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon’s home victories over Cascade and Warner Pacific, Southern holds a game lead over OIT, a game and a half lead over the Lady ‘Yotes, and a two-game cushion over Concordia, Western, and Northwest.  The odd team out is Evergreen, now three full games out of first-place.

 

‘YOTES SET NEW SCHOOL-RECORD AT BLOCKTOBERFEST: With three victories to start Blocktoberfest 2003, Albertson established a new school record for consecutive wins with nine.  The streak, which began on Sept. 20 at Western Baptist, saw the Lady ‘Yotes lose just five games in the process.  The former record was a seven-match win streak back in 1999.  With their Game 1 loss to Montana-Western, it also ended a record-setting 18-game win streak – which includes five consecutive 3-0 victories in October.

 

DESPITE SOLID WEEK, LADIES SEE DROP IN RANKINGS: A strange downside to the great week for the spikers was the fact that Albertson actually dropped in the NAIA Region I weekly top-ten poll.  Even a 4-1 week and a win over the No. 16 ranked team in the nation couldn’t help the Coyotes cause, who were penalized for their second loss of the season to Montana-Western.  Southern Oregon (No. 18 in NAIA national poll) regained the top spot in the region, followed by Carroll (No. 22).  Montana Tech dropped to No. 3, with Lewis-Clark State, Oregon Tech, Northwest, and Montana-Western all ahead of the eighth-place Lady ‘Yotes.  Rounding out the top-ten were Western Baptist and Concordia.

 

BONNETT, BAILEY NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Two players had truly outstanding tournament for the Lady ‘Yotes a the 8th-Annual Blocktoberfest getogether.  Transfer Brittany Bonnett (Logandale, Nev. / Dixie State CC) and blocker Kristen Bailey (Fountain Green, Utah / Snow CC) each played well in all four matches for the Coyotes – each earning All-Tournament Team honors.  Bonnett averaged 4.1 kills and 4.6 digs per match, while hitting at a .304 clip.  She tied a team-highs for the season with 19 kills and five aces in the loss to Montana-Western.  Bailey averaged 2.7 kills and a tournament-high 1.4 blocks per game, while swinging at lofty .381 percent.  Joining the duo on the All-Tournament Team were Southern Idaho’s Andreza Santos and Eliane Santos, Montana Tech’s Kaila Minehan and Janalee Stokken, and Montana-Western’s Katherine Sunwall.

 

WERE THEY REALLY RANKED NO. 16?: Many people were asking that same question late Friday night, as Albertson ran No. 16 ranked Montana Tech off the court in a quick 30-28, 30-24, 30-25 victory – the first this season for the Coyotes over a ranked opponent.  Brittany Bonnett had 15 kills and 15 digs, Kristen Bailey added ten kills and three blocks in the victory over a Tech team that had dropped matches to Lewis-Clark State and Southern Idaho in the previous 24 hours.  Tiffany Sower (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) and Amber Igoe (Blackfoot, Idaho / Firth HS) played great defense, with the freshman Sower recording 19 digs, and the senior Igoe bumping 15 balls from her libero position.

 

TOUGH LOSS TO WESTERN: A poor showing in the first two games dug the Coyotes into a hole they could not recover from in a 3-1 loss to Montana-Western in the final match of Blocktoberfest.  Albertson hit less than .050 percent in the first two games, piling up 25 attack errors.  After rallying to win Game 3 convicinly, the hosts could not maintain the momentum – losing a 22-18 lead in the final game.  Brittany Bonnett led all players with 19 kills and 16 digs, while five other other players recording eight or more kills.  Albertson also lost this match at the net, as the Bulldogs held a 15-7 total block advantage.

 

OTHER TOURNAMENT GAMES AND NOTES: The Lady ‘Yotes swept aside both Westminster and Victoria in three games.  In the tourney opener against Westminster, sophomore blocker Fran Hartman (Lakeview, Ore. / Lakeview HS) led all players with ten kills and a .563 attack percentage, as Albertson held the guests to a .035 hitting percentage.  The next day, Ashlea Thornton (Glendora, Calif. / Cal Baptist) spiked ten balls, while Amber Igoe, Brittany Bonnett, and Tiffany Sower each had ten digs in a blanking of Victoria.  Southern Idaho took the team title for the second consecutive year, with the Coyotes second.  Western and Montana Tech tied for third, Victoria was fifth, and winless Westminster took sixth.

 

CONFERENCE LEADERS: Being in third place will tell most fans that the Coyotes should figure heavily in the Cascade Conference team and individual statistics – which they do.  As a team, Albertson ranks in the top-two in all six categories – first in both kills per game (14.90) and assists per game (13.53), and second in attack percentage (.229), aces per game (2.73), blocks per game (2.03), and digs per game (15.47).  Individually, Kristen Bailey leads all CCC players with 1.16 blocks per game, while ranking No. 3 in attack percentage (.326).  Tiffany Sower is second in the loop in aces per game (0.69), while both Brittany Bonnett (No. 4 at 3.25) and Amber Igoe (No. 8 at 3.04) are in the top-ten in digs per game.  Fran Hartman ranks eighth in blocks per game (0.73), with the two setters – Amanda Basañez (Elko, Nev. / College of Southern Idaho) and Erin Cherrington (Granby, Colo. / Middle Fork HS) are No. 8 and No. 9 in assists per game.

 

OIT, SOUTHERN AWAIT REJUVINATED LADY ‘YOTES: Albertson begins the second time through the Cascade Conference this weekend, with their annual trek south to meet Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon, the top two teams in the league.  OIT (16-6, 8-3 CCC) defeated the Lady ‘Yotes in a five-game marathon in Caldwell in September – their first win at Albertson since volleyball was reinstated in the late 1990s.  The balanced Owl attack is led by hitter Christina Merrill (2.99 kills/g) and setter Megan Albertson (7.9 assists/g, 0.59 blocks/g).  OIT is currently on a three-game win streak, after already running off nine consecutive wins earlier in the year. It is the 20th meeting between the teams, with Albertson holding a 14-5 all-time advantage.  No. 18 Southern Oregon (11-4, 9-2) has had the ‘Yotes number in Ashland over the past 16 years, as Albertson has dropped all 14 meetings at McNeal Pavilion.  Things will be difficult again, as the Raiders All-American hitter Kristina Matchett (5.19 k/g) continues her assault on 2,000 kills.  The Coyotes played a tough four-game match with Southern in September, but last topped the Raiders during the 2000 regional tournament – part of the Albertson run to their only NAIA Tournament appearance. The Raiders hold a 32-4 all-time lead in the series.

 

RAFFLE FOR QUILT: The Coyote volleyball team is holding a raffle for an 86-square inch quilt to be drawn on May 9, 2004.  The original design “Crown Jubilee” will be present at all home matches and is valued at over $800.  Tickets are just one dollar each, or six tickets for five dollars – and can be purchased at all home volleyball matches, or by calling coach Liz Mendiola at 459-5858.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (6-4-1, 5-2-1 CCC): Lady ‘Yotes to host Western Baptist in final home contest of 2003 season

 

LAST WEEK: Won at Cascade, 8-1, tied at Warner Pacific, 1-1.

 

COMING UP: vs. Western Baptist, Friday, 3 p.m.

 

A WIN OR EVERGREEN SLIP UP = PLAYOFFS: The word playoffs and the Albertson women’s soccer program have not been synonymous over the 14-year history of the program.  On two occasions – 1989 and 2002, have the Lady ‘Yotes qualified for a post-season berth (a regional final loss to Willamette in 1989 and a conference semifinal loss to Concordia last year).  This year’s squad is gunning for another playoff bid – and with some luck this weekend, could sew up a berth.  An Albertson win or an Evergreen loss or tie in one of their final three games would give the Lady ‘Yotes a spot in the Cascade Conference Tournament – and a date with either Southern Oregon or Western Baptist (as the Northern Division champ plays the Southern Division runner-up, and the Southern Division champ plays the Northern Division runner-up).  If the playoffs were to start today, Albertson would meet Western Baptist and Concordia would meet Southern Oregon.

 

‘YOTES HAVE EIGHT GOAL OUTBURST: It was like Christmas morning for the Lady ‘Yotes last Friday in Portland, as the squad had their most prolific scoring afternoon in ten years in an 8-1 victory over Cascade.  It was the third-highest goal output in school history – the most goals scored since an 11-0 victory over Western Baptist on Oct. 26, 1993.  Three players had multi-goal games, including seniors Kristi Dalsoglio (Boise, Idaho / Meridian HS) and Shaila Goodman (La Crescenta, Calif. / Boise State), and freshman Adele Johnson (Riverton, Utah / Waterford HS).  The Coyotes had a 26-3 shot advantage against the winless T-Birds, allowing all 19 players in uniform to see action.  

 

LATHAM IN THE GIVING MOOD: Forward Alyssa Latham (Walla Walla, Wash. / Walla Walla CC) has already set school records for assists in a season and a career – but was gunning for the single-game record against Cascade.  The senior scored a goal and registered four assists in the contest – the most by a Coyote player in ten years – but just off the school record.  It was the third time a player has recorded four assists – Kristine Jones did it twice during the 1993 season – but the school mark of five was set by Katie Wagner on Oct. 22, 1993 in a 15-0 rout of Western Baptist.  For the season, Latham has ten assists for the season, giving her 31 for her Lady ‘Yote career.

 

ALBERTSON-WARNER PLAY TO DRAW: Rainy conditions and a wet field did not play into the Coyotes hands on Saturday, as Albertson and Warner Pacific battled 110 minutes to a 1-1 draw at Portland Christian High School.  The Lady ‘Yotes got on the board first in the tenth minute, as Allison Rupert (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) flicked home a combination from Andrea Ebert (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) and Kristi Dalsoglio.  As the field deteriorated, Warner took advantage of their only true opportunity of the game, a 30-yard free kick that just eluded the reach of Coyote keeper, Danielle Dorsch (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) in the 73rd minute.

 

TIES AND STREAKS: The draw was the first for the Lady ‘Yotes since a 3-3 tie against Eastern Oregon on Oct. 13, 2001.  The goal scored by Warner Pacific was the first allowed by Danielle Dorsch since late in the match at Utah Valley State, a span of 221 minutes, dropping her goals against average to 2.52.

 

REGIONAL RANKINGS: Jockeying for position for possible at-large selections for the NAIA Region I Tournament continue as this week’s top-five poll was released.  Leading the list, as they have all season, was Concordia, who remain at No. 4 in the NAIA poll after a weekend sweep of Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon.  Simon Fraser checks in a No. 2 in the region, No. 12 in the national poll.  Carroll (Mont.) is No. 3, picking up seven votes in the national poll, with Western Baptist and Southern Oregon rounding out the top-five.

 

FINAL HOME MATCH FOR SENIORS: For half of the women’s soccer team, Friday’s home match will be the final time they don the white home jersey at Symms Field.  In fact, six of the Lady ‘Yote seniors are four-year members of the squad, with five of them earning NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors last season.  The seniors – Alyssa Latham, Andrea Ebert, Nicole Voorhees (Portland, Ore. / Caitlin Gabel HS), Kristi Dalsoglio, Dana Landon (Idaho Falls, Idaho / Idaho Falls HS), Katie Rupert (Boise, Idaho / North Idaho CC), Kelly Asbjornsen (Washougal, Wash. / Washougal HS), Brittany Cross (Washougal, Wash. / Washougal HS), Joan Blankenship (Hillsboro, Ore. / Glencoe HS), and Shaila Goodman.

 

LEAGUE LEADERS: Five different Lady ‘Yote players find themselves among the Cascade Conference top-ten in statistical categories.  Alyssa Latham ranks third in the loop in both total assists and assists per game, seventh in points per game, and eighth in shots per game.  Kristi Dalsoglio is tied for sixth in the league in assists per game, Adria Carley (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS) is tied for fourth in game-winning goals, and Danielle Dorsch is fifth in goals against average and sixth in total saves.

 

PLAYOFF BOUND WESTERN COMING TO CALDWELL: The road does not get any easier for the Lady ‘Yotes this week – as the team hosts Western Baptist on Friday afternoon.  The Warriors (9-6-1, 7-2 CCC) have already clinched a spot in the CCC Tournament – but are battling Southern Oregon for first-place in the South Division, and the right to face the North No. 2 seed (Albertson or Evergreen) in the playoffs.  Leading scorer KeriAnn Rumrey (12 goals, 17 assists) is a three-time All-Regional selection – needing just one assist to break the all-time NAIA record.  Rumrey has scored 93 goals and 68 assists in her Western career.  The key to the Warriors success is a solid defense, led by keeper Kim Mendenhall (1.54 GAA), which has allowed just nine goals in nine conference games this season.  It is the 20th meeting between the teams, with Albertson winning the first five match-ups, and the Warriors taking each of the next 14.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (22-14 in 2002-03): Season Preview

 

A clean run through the Cascade Conference Tournament and a victory at the NAIA Division II National Tournament has the 2003-04 Albertson College men’s basketball team eager for the upcoming season.  Returning four starters and six of the top eight players from last season’s league championship team, along with the addition of crucial junior college transfers, the Coyotes are poised and hungry to pick up where they left off last season – and an opportunity to make the 1,700 mile trek back to Branson, Mo.

 

Fourth-year head coach Mark Owen (71-35 overall record) has taken the ‘Yotes to the “Big Dance” in two of the three seasons he has been at the helm of the Albertson ship.  Although the 2002-03 squad was not ranked in the final NAIA Division II poll, the 22-14 Coyotes defeated eight nationally ranked teams and won 12-of-14 games down the stretch - including road wins at Warner Pacific, Cascade, and Concordia in the CCC Tournament, and a 52-43 victory over Taylor (Ind.) in the first-round of the national tournament.  Albertson also knocked off NCAA Division I Idaho State, and took another big school, Boise State, to the buzzer.  Taking all things aside, the optimism runs wild for the ‘Yotes– considering the wealth of playoff experience and the tenacity Albertson brings to both ends of the floor.

 

All-American forward Tom Perkes returns for his senior season, after posting one of the top performances in the last 30 years of Coyote basketball.  Perkes averaged 19 points and eight rebounds a night – establishing school records for free throws made and attempted along the way, and scoring more points than any Albertson player in the last 15 years.  Complementing Perkes up front is fifth-year senior, Justin McCarthy, one of the top defensive players in the league.  McCarthy came into his own last year, averaging seven points and four rebounds a night – while providing key support in the Albertson zone defense.  Also throw redshirt junior Steve Humphreys into the mix under the bucket.  Humphreys, the cousin of former Coyote All-CCC player B.J. Humphreys, stands at 6-9, with the ability to block shots and play inside-outside.

 

Owen loves his options from a wing standpoint – considering over one-third of the shots put up by the club last season were from three-point range.  All-Cascade Conference Newcomer Andy Harper looks to pick up after a frantic finish to last season.  The now senior was among the top players in the league during conference play in 2002-03, averaging 16 points a night, along with shooting 41-percent from outside the arc.  His experience will help mold a trio of newcomers to the program.  E.J. Costello averaged 19 points a game at Chabot C.C., draining 108 three-pointers last season, Eric Howard averaged 14 points a night for Yavapai C.C.’s team that won a league championship, and Lance Hansen put up 15 points a night while at Casper C.C.  Also returning for the ‘Yotes is junior Zach Rasmussen, who hit clutch long-balls for the squad last season.

 

The Coyotes also return their top-two playmakers from a year ago.  Junior Joe Green started all 36 games last season at the point, recording a gaudy 3.7 assist-to-turnover ratio.  Green averaged eight points and four assists a game, but came into his own during the Cascade Conference tournament, where he contributed 13 points a game.  Sophomore Derek Brown matured as well last season, seeing 12 minutes a game – averaging four points a contest.

 

The experience factor will help the ‘Yotes in a season where their non-conference slate is most-likely the most difficult schedule in school history.  After opening at Montana Tech and Montana-Western – the ‘Yotes first trip to Big Sky country since 1998, Albertson will head to Nevada for a three-game set.  Trent Johnson’s University of Nevada will host the ‘Yotes for the first time since 1993, followed by the annual exodus to Las Vegas for games against Robert Morris and William Jewell.  Not one, but two more Division I games await the team – dates at Boise State and 2003 NCAA Tournament competitor, Weber State.  After a trip to Salt Lake to meet Westminster and Christian Heritage, the ‘Yotes finally open up their home schedule, as Westminster and Rocky Mountain head to the Golden Rule Shoot-Out.

 

A wide-open Cascade Conference race is also expected.  Oregon Tech returns all five starters from its 2003 National Tournament team – and was picked as the preseason favorite by the coaches – just ahead of the Coyotes.  Both Concordia and Western Baptist return the majority of their teams from last season, while Southern Oregon had a great recruiting year and hopes to rebound from a season in the cellar.  Eastern Oregon returns a pair of very athletic guards, Warner Pacific must rebuild after losing three starters, with Cascade having to rebuild its entire squad.  Rounding out the league are a pair of unknowns – both Evergreen and Northwest have been silent in the offseason, but always come to play.

 

Albertson has not won a regular-season Cascade Conference title since the 1995-96 run to the NAIA Championship.  With a great cast of characters and a proven leader, the Coyotes look to continue the winning legacy of Albertson basketball.
