GENERAL
ATHLETICS NEWS:
SHINES TO LEAD COYOTE SWIMMERS: We will now find out how well a
Coyote can swim. Albertson College
announced today the hiring of Mike Shines as the first head coach of its new
intercollegiate swim program. Shines has served as the Director
of Aquatics and swim instructor at the J.A. Albertson Aquatics Center on the
Albertson campus for the last eight years. He has also served as the
institution's strength coach for the past 12 seasons. The Coyotes will begin competition in the fall of 2004, joining Simon
Fraser as the lone aquatic schools in the NAIA Region I. Albertson will compete
primarily against NCAA Division II and III competition - including the
eight-team Northwest Conference. Home
meets will take place at the J.A. Albertson Aquatics Center on the Albertson
College campus. Recruiting has begun
for next season - as Shines will be attending this weekend's IDHSAA District
III meet, along with the upcoming state meet.
The school has also launched the swimming website at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/swim.htm. With the addition of swimming, track, cross country, and
nordic skiing - Albertson will offer a total of 11 intercollegiate sports for
women (volleyball, soccer, cross country, alpine skiing, nordic skiing,
basketball, swimming, softball, track, tennis, golf) and nine intercollegiate
sports for men (soccer, cross country, alpine skiing, nordic skiing,
basketball, swimming, baseball, track, golf) - the most sports at a single
four-year institution in Idaho.

INCLUDED
IN THIS WEEK’S ‘YOTE NOTES: John Calpin needs one win for
200 in his career, three student-athletes earn Player-of-the-Week honors, women’s
basketball preview.
LAST
WEEK: Won at Evergreen, 3-2; won at Northwest,
6-1.
COMING
UP: vs. Warner Pacific, Friday, 3:30 p.m.; vs.
Western Baptist, Saturday, 1 p.m. – end of regular season
CALPIN
ONE AWAY FROM MILESTONE: With victories
in their last six matches, the Albertson men’s soccer team continues its
assault on the Cascade Conference title, and a chance at a milestone from
18-year head coach John
Calpin. The
veteran coach has now won 199 games in his tenure at Albertson, and will shoot
for No. 200 this weekend when Warner Pacific and Western Baptist come to
Caldwell. Only 15 coaches (14 men’s,
one women’s) have achieved the milestone in the NAIA’s history. “I have to thank each and every player who
have put on a Coyote uniform for the 199 wins,” said Calpin. “However, we cannot let this “win No. 200
stuff” get us sidetracked – we have two huge conference matches ahead of us,
with a chance to play at home during the playoffs. We have to take things one game at a time.”
SOUTHWARD
NAMED REGIONAL PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK: For
the fourth time in his career, striker Jason Southward (Hailey, Idaho /
Wood River HS) was named Cascade
Conference and NAIA Region I Player-of-the-Week after leading Albertson to
three victories. The junior, who leads
the squad with 17 goals, knocked home seven goals and had an assist in games
against Walla Walla, Evergreen, and Northwest.
Southward had two goals and an assist in the 9-2 win at home over Walla
Walla, two key goals at Evergreen, and his fourth career hat trick in the rout
of Northwest.
‘YOTES
HEADED TO THE PLAYOFFS: With road wins
at Evergreen and Northwest last week, Albertson sewed up their
fifth-consecutive Cascade Conference Tournament berth and inched their way
toward their fifth-consecutive NAIA Region I Tournament appearance. The victories also gave head coach John
Calpin his fifth consecutive 10-win season.
During this five-year period, the Coyotes have a 75-25-2 record, good
for a .745 winning percentage.
HOW TO
GET HOME FIELD: It’s simple to earn a
home playoff game – defeat Warner Pacific on Friday. With a win over the Knights, Albertson could finish no worse than
second in the league, giving the Coyotes a home match on Oct. 30. If Albertson finishes ahead of co-leader
Concordia, the Coyotes would potentially host two playoff games. However, if the teams tie at 10-2 – crazy
tie-break scenarios would determine the CCC champ and home field. Both Albertson and Concordia are deadlocked
in the first three tie-break criteria (record, head-to-head, sempert scale), so
it would come down to goal differential in conference play – Concordia
currently at +21 and the ‘Yotes currently at +20.
HOW
ABOUT REGIONALS: The top-four teams in
the league will battle for one or two spots in the regional, to be hosted by
most likely, Simon Fraser. The CCC
regular-season champion gains a spot in the regional, along with the CCC
Tournament champion. The other two berths (CCC teams and independents) are
selected based on Longo rating in games before Oct. 31 (if the CCC regular
season and tournament champ are the same, three berths are selected from
Longo). Currently, Albertson boasts a
217.9 rating in the Longo, much higher than the 192.8 they had in 2002 in
earning an at-large bid to the regional, where they lost 5-0 to Simon
Fraser. Currently, only SFU (236.5) and
Westminster (221.3) have a higher longo than the ‘Yotes, with Concordia (212.5)
and Western Baptist (195.6) trailing.
The winner of the NAIA Region I Tournament receives one of 14 automatic
berths to the NAIA Tourney in Olathe, Kan., along with five at-large
selections.
COYOTES
RECEIVE VOTES IN NATIONAL POLL: For
the second consecutive week, Albertson received votes in the NAIA national
poll. With 11 voter points, the Coyotes
were the fourth team listed on the “others receiving votes” category, putting
Albertson at No. 29 in the nation.
Albertson has been ranked nationally each of the last three seasons,
rising to a school record No. 15 in the nation during September of 2002. In the regional poll, Simon Fraser leads the
group (No. 21 in the NAIA national poll, despite a 7-5-2 record), followed by
the ‘Yotes. Concordia, Warner Pacific,
and Western Baptist round out the top-five.
‘YOTES
SQUEAK OUT WIN IN RAIN: Battling the
elements and a tough Evergreen squad on Friday, the Coyotes battled 90 minutes
for a hard fought 3-2 victory. Jason
Southward knocked home two first half goals – one after a long goal kick from
keeper Ryan Huber (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) that Southward picked up and scored on, the other
after the 6-5 forward stole a ball in the Geoduck defense and found goal. After Evergreen had tied the score at 2-2 in
the second half, Albertson won it on a John Mitchell (Boise, Idaho /
Boise State) free kick from just
outside the 18. The sophomore cracked a
laser into the Upper V for the game-winner – his first goal of the season. The loss for the Clams eliminated them from
postseason contention.
ARTIFICIAL
TURF DOES NOT STOP ALBERTSON: Playing
at Lake Washington High School is always an adventure for CCC teams meeting
Northwest – as the stadium is the only artificial surface in the league. Despite a bevy of unusual big bounces and
unlucky breaks due to the turf, the Coyotes scored six unanswered goals for a
6-1 win. Jason Southward erased an
early 1-0 Eagle lead with three goals in a 17 minute span – two of them pretty
passes from senior Roger
Aguilar (Payette, Idaho /
Payette HS). Albertson dominated the second half – with a
19-4 shot advantage.
ASSIST
RECORD IN JEOPARDY: Assists have been
plentiful for the Coyotes during the 2003 season, as two individuals and the
team look to smash the single-season school record. Both Ryan
Abo (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) and Joe
Chandler (Nampa, Idaho /
University of Utah) are tied for the team
lead with 13 assists, one off the school record Coe Michaelson set during the
2000 and 2001 seasons. As a team, the
Coyotes have already set a new school mark with 69 assists on the season –
having broken the single-game record with 12 assists on two occasions.
CAREER
NUMBERS: Both Jason Southward,
Ryan Abo, and Roger Aguilar continue to climb up the charts in the ‘Yotes
career record book. With his big week,
Southward has scored 41 goals in his career, just one goal shy of fourth-place,
has assisted on 21 goals, good enough for seventh-place all-time, and his 103
career points rank him No. 5 all-time.
Abo has moved into fourth-place all-time in assists, just one behind
Chuck Gazdik and the No. 3 slot, Aguilar has joined Southward with 21 assists
in his career, seven-best all-time.
LEAGUE
LEADERS: Albertson leads the
Cascade Conference in six team categories – points per game (13.35), goals per
game (4.21), assists (69), assists per game (4.93), least goals allowed (20),
and home attendance (220).
Individually, Joe Chandler, Jason Southward, and Ryan Abo flood the
upper echelon of the CCC stat categories.
Chandler ranks second in assists and game-winning goals, fifth in goals,
points, and points per game. Southward
ranks third in shots per game, and ranks fourth in goals, points and
assists. Abo is second in the loop in
assists, while Roger Aguilar is ninth in assists. Ironically, 18 of the 19 position players on the Coyote roster
have scored at least a goal or an assist this season – only starting defender Skiff Larson (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) has not gotten in the mix.
CAN
THE ‘YOTES NET HOME FIELD IN THE PLAYOFFS: Already in the postseason, Albertson will try to earn a first-round home
playoff game and improve their Longo rating on Friday against Warner Pacific. The
Knights (8-7, 7-3 CCC) are the surprise team in the league, trying to rekindle
the magic that made them a District II power in the 1980s. Albertson knocked off Warner, 3-0, earlier
this year, silencing the one-two punch of Cameron Marvin (ten goals, four
assists) and Garen Bedoyan (nine goals, 14 assists). The Coyotes have won nine consecutive matches against the
Knights, holding a 9-7-1 all-time advantage.
Saturday, Western
Baptist brings a three-game win
streak over Albertson to Symms Field, where they shocked the Coyotes, 5-0, in
the CCC Tournament last year. The
Warriors (10-6-1, 6-3-1) have won four of their last five matches, including a
10-0 drubbing of Cascade on Saturday.
Leading scorer Patrick Daka (25 goals, nine assists) is gunning for his
fourth-consecutive CCC scoring title – having now scored 102 goals in his
career (eighth most in NAIA history), while Scott Marshall (18 goals, nine
assists), who had the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Albertson on Oct. 3, is
closing in on the WBC freshman record.
It is the 29th meeting between the clubs, with Albertson
holding a 15-13 advantage.
FINAL
HOME MATCHES FOR PAIR OF SENIORS: For
Roger Aguilar and Brad
Thornburg (Yreka, Calif. / Yreka
HS), Saturday will mark the final home
regular-season match for the only two seniors on the 2003 team. Both Aguilar and Thornburg have been at
Albertson for their entire collegiate career, and are the only players (non-redshirts)
left from the 2000 team, which advanced to the NAIA National Tournament.
MORE INFORMATION ON THE COYOTES: For game stories, statistics, and information
regarding the Albertson men’s soccer program, head to the official site Coyote
Soccer: www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/menssoccer.htm. Each night, scores and updated standings are
posted on the Conference Standings page within the Albertson men’s soccer
website at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/msoccer/stats/standings.htm.
LAST
WEEK: Defeated Westminster, 3-0; defeated No. 16
Montana Tech, 3-0; defeated Victoria, 3-0; lost to Montana-Western, 3-1.
COMING
UP: vs. Western Baptist, Friday, 7 p.m.; vs.
Concordia, Saturday, 7 p.m.
NEVER
DONE BEFORE: In a season of firsts,
the Albertson volleyball team overshadowed their school-record nine-match
winning streak of last week – by heading to Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon and
sweeping matches for the first time in school history. The victory at Southern was their first
since 1987 and became just the second school other than Concordia to win on the
Raiders home floor since 1998. The win
at OIT was sweet redemption for a five-game loss to the Owls in Caldwell. Albertson has now won 11 of their last 12
matches since a 1-5 start to the season.
COYOTES
SWEEP WEEKLY AWARDS: With the wins come the
accolades – the first such accolades of the 2003 season. Albertson spikers took home both the Cascade
Conference Hitter and Setter-of-the-Week awards – as swinger Brittany Bonnett (Logandale, Nev. / Dixie State CC), and setter Amanda Basañez (Elko, Nev. /
College of So. Idaho) took the
honors. Bonnett averaged 4.17 kills per
game, 3.50 digs per game, and recorded five service aces in the two wins, while
Basañez rapped out 3.83 kills per game, 8.17 assists per game, and averaged
1.33 blocks and digs per game.
Incidentally, Basañez became the first setter in the league this season
running a 6-2 formation to win the award.
ENDING
THE HORRORS OF MCNEAL: 14 times the
Lady ‘Yotes had played at McNeal Pavilion since the 1987 season – and three
other coaches had tried, with none of them successful in winning at Southern
Oregon, until Saturday night’s 30-22, 30-27, 30-21 victory. Albertson jumped out to 8-2 and 16-9 leads
in Game 1 to win the match opener against SOU for the second time this
season. However, just as the Coyotes
did in their 3-1 loss to the Raiders in Idaho, Albertson fell behind 12-3 in
Game 2, but rallied for the victory, and won 13 of the final 16 points in Game 3
for the sweep. Brittany Bonnett was
outstanding, recording a match-high 13 kills and four aces, with Amanda Basañez
knocking home 12 kills, 24 assists, and four blocks. The Lady ‘Yotes limited Southern to a .029 attack percentage,
with Tiffany Sower (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) and Erin
Cherrington (Granby, Colo. / Middle
Fork HS) leading the charge with
13 and 12 digs respectively.
SHUTTING
DOWN MATCHETT: Raider All-American
Kristina Matchett had feasted on Albertson in her four-year career – to the
tune of nearly six kills per game and a .398 attack percentage in 11 previous
meetings with Albertson. Saturday was a
different story, as the Lady ‘Yotes stifled the big hitter to the tune of seven kills, seven attack errors, and a
.000 attack percentage.
COMEBACKS
OF COMEBACKS: It took a pair of late
game comebacks to lift the Lady ‘Yotes to a sweep of Oregon Tech on Friday
night – one of mythical proportion.
After winning Game 1 by a 30-24 margin, Albertson trailed 29-21 in Game
2 and 29-26 in Game 3 – but rallied to win both. Amanda Basañez had 11 kills and 25 assists in the win, with
Brittany Bonnett spiking 12 balls to go along with 13 digs.
SERVING
FOR AN ETERNITY: Game 2 against Tech was
a disaster from the start, as Albertson trailed 11-3. It turned into 29-21, but OIT missed a serve, handing the ball to
freshman Erin Cherrington. An ace, a
Brittany Bonnett kill, and an Owl error got the Coyotes to 29-25. Two Amanda Basañez kills, surrounded by a
bad Hooter set and a hitting error knotted the score at 29-29. The teams would trade side-outs on eight
consecutive points, before a Kristen
Bailey (Fountain Green, Utah /
Snow CC) kill and a bad OIT set
handed the game to the Coyotes.
HIGHEST
SCORING WIN: The Game 2 win was the
highest scoring game win for the Coyotes since rally scoring began in
2001. The school record is 36 points,
in a 38-36 game loss to Northwest Nazarene in 2001.
DESPITE
SOLID WEEK, LADIES SEE DROP IN RANKINGS: A strange downside to the second straight great week for the spikers was
the fact that Albertson did not climb in the top-five of the weekly NAIA Region
I top-ten poll. Even a road sweep and a
win over the No. 18 ranked team in the nation (second nationally ranked
opponent defeated in two weeks) couldn’t help the Coyotes cause, who are still
penalized by Frontier Conference voters for losses to Montana-Western and
Carroll. Montana Tech (No. 19 in NAIA),
despite the loss to Albertson a week ago, regained the top spot in the region,
followed by Southern (No. 22) – which wasn’t hurt that bad for the loss to the
Lady ‘Yotes. Carroll dropped to No. 3
after a loss to Montana-Western, with Lewis-Clark State and Montana-Western all
ahead of the sixth-place Lady ‘Yotes.
Rounding out the top-ten were Oregon Tech, Western Baptist, Concordia,
and Evergreen. If the regional draw
were to occur today, four Frontier Conference schools and only two Cascade
Conference schools would meet in the NAIA Region I tournament.
CONFERENCE
LEADERS: Albertson continues to
dominate the Cascade Conference team statistics, finding themselves among the
top-two in all six categories. The
Coyotes lead the league in kills per game (15.09) and assists per game (13.76),
while ranking second in attack percentage (.228), aces per game (2.75), blocks
per game (2.07), and digs per game (15.97).
No less than seven Lady ‘Yote regulars find their names in the CCC’s
top-ten in individual categories.
Kristen Bailey is the top-dog in both the blocks per game (1.16) and
attack percentage (.326) categories, while Tiffany Sower is second in the loop
in aces per game (0.65). Brittany
Bonnett is third in digs per game (3.27) and fourth in aces per game
(0.56). Both setters are on the list – Amanda
Basañez (eighth in assists per game) and Erin Cherrington (ninth in assists per
game), while Fran
Hartman (Lakeview, Ore. /
Lakeview HS) is eighth in blocks per
game (0.74) and libero Amber
Igoe (Blackfoot, Idaho /
Firth HS) is ninth in digs per
game (2.97).
IGOE
CLOSING IN ON EIGHTH-PLACE IN BUMPS:
Coming into weekend play, senior Amber Igoe has recorded 850 digs in her
four-year Coyote career, ranking her ninth on the all-time list. She is 35 bumps away from eighth-place
Miranda Harris, and 150 digs away from becoming the seventh player in school
history to eclipse the 1,000 mark in a career.
THREE
GAME HOMESTAND AHEAD: Albertson cannot
rest on its laurels this week, as two key Cascade Conference matches will take
place at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
Starting it off on Friday night is Western Baptist, the team that
Albertson began its current run against.
Five players had double-digit kill nights in the four-game Coyote win on
September 20 – which ended a Warrior five-game win streak. Since then, Western (13-8, 9-4 CCC) has been
hot and cold – sweeping matches at Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon, but losing
3-0 matches at Northwest and Concordia.
The Warriors have one of the best one-two punches in the league in
hitter Liz Howe (4.30 k/g, 3.17 d/g) and blocker Kendra Mitchell (3.87 k/g,
0.71 b/g) – both All-CCC selections last season. The duo combined for 37 kills in the earlier loss to Albertson. It is the 25th meeting between
the teams, with the ‘Yotes holding a 15-9 advantage and victories in the last
four matches. Reality has set in to Saturday’s
opponent, Concordia, as the four-time defending league champs are not
in the top spot in the CCC. The
Cavaliers (9-9, 9-4) have played well as of late – despite seeing their
66-match CCC win streak snapped earlier in the year. Amanda Larsen (2.91 k/g, 2.73 d/g) and Amy Nevills (2.62 k/g,
2.33 d/g) have been standouts for the Cavs over the years, who have defeated
Albertson ten consecutive times. It is
the 29th meeting between the clubs, with Concordia leading the
series, 16-12.
RAFFLE
FOR QUILT: The Coyote volleyball
team is holding a raffle for an 86-square inch quilt to be drawn on May 9,
2004. The original design “Crown
Jubilee” will be present at all home matches and is valued at over $800. Tickets are just one dollar each, or six
tickets for five dollars – and can be purchased at all home volleyball matches,
or by calling coach Liz Mendiola at 459-5858.
MORE INFORMATION ON THE LADY
‘YOTES: For game stories, statistics,
and information regarding the Albertson women’s volleyball program, head to the
official site Lady ‘Yote volleyball: www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/vball.htm. Each night, scores and updated standings are
posted on the Conference Standings page within the Albertson volleyball website
at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/vball/stats/standings.htm.
WOMEN’S SOCCER (6-5-1, 5-3-1 CCC): Playoff hopes come down to final road trip to
Concordia and Evergreen
LAST WEEK: Lost to Western Baptist, 5-1.
COMING UP: at No. 4 Concordia, Friday, 3 p.m. (PDT); at
Evergreen, Saturday, 2 p.m. (PDT) – end of regular-season.
POSTSEASON SPOT UP FOR GRABS
THIS WEEKEND: The Albertson women’s soccer
team is a big fan of Eastern Oregon this week, as the Lady ‘Yotes and Evergreen
battle for the final spot into the four-team Cascade Conference Tournament, to
begin next week. The scenario is the
same as it has been the last two weeks – an Albertson win or an Evergreen tie
or loss would give the Coyotes the fourth and final slot in the postseason –
and a rematch next Wednesday with Western Baptist. What has compounded the situation is the fact that Evergreen has
run off three straight victories (against Cascade, Warner Pacific, and Oregon
Tech). Why are the ’Yotes fans of
Eastern this week? The Mounties meet
Evergreen in Olympia on Friday – an Eastern victory or tie would send Albertson
to the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
TENTATIVE COYOTES FALL IN HOME
FINALE: The final home match of the
2003 season was a tale of two halves, as Western Baptist rolled into Caldwell
to knock off the Lady ‘Yotes, 5-1. A
very tentative Albertson squad allowed three Western goals in the first 22
minutes before the hosts began an assault.
The Coyotes held most of the possession in the first 15 minutes of the
second half, getting their lone goal in the 61st minute on an Alyssa
Latham (Walla Walla, Wash. / Walla Walla CC) penalty kick, after
freshman Adele Johnson (Riverton, Utah / Waterford HS) was fouled
in the box. Things could have become
more interesting, but Albertson struggled all afternoon with the Warriors
offsides trap, getting whistled for ten alignment violations.
WESTERN’S RUMREY SETS NATIONAL
RECORD IN CALDWELL: Western Baptist forward
KeriAnn Rumrey has had her way with the Coyotes during her four years at the
Salem, Ore. school, and it was fitting that the All-American broke the NAIA
record for career assists at Symms Field.
Rumrey had scored 15 goals and assisted on seven others in six previous
games against Albertson, and tacked on the record-breaking assist just 81
seconds into Friday’s match. She also
scored a breakaway goal with four seconds remaining in the contest to avoid not
scoring a goal for the first time against the Coyotes.
2002 VS. 2003: The records are nearly identical, the playoff
scenarios are alike – yet things are different in 2003 than last season’s 10-11
campaign in Aisha Reed’s rookie year as coach. First and foremost, the Lady ‘Yotes played 20 regular-season
contests (16 conference tilts), whereas this season, with the implementation of
divisional play, Albertson will have just 13 regular-season matches (11
conference games). Although the overall
numbers are down – 39 goals in 2002 vs. 24 goals in 2003, etc. – the numbers
are the same. The Coyotes averaged 1.9
goals and 2.0 assists a match last year, and are averaging 2.0 goals and 2.3
assists each time out this season. More
players are involved in the scoring in 2003 – six players have three-or-more
goals this year, compared with just four last season. To cap it off, having played nine less games so far, 13 different
Albertson players have registered either a goal or assist, where only ten
players in 21 games did the same in 2002.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: Jockeying for position for possible at-large
selections for the NAIA Region I Tournament continue as this week’s top-five
poll was released. Leading the list, as
they have all season, was Concordia, who remain at No. 4 in the NAIA poll after
a forfeit victory over Cascade, and an important 4-0 win over Simon
Fraser. SFU, despite the loss, checks
in a No. 2 in the region, No. 16 in the national poll. Carroll (Mont.) is No. 3, picking up ten
votes in the national poll, with Western Baptist and Southern Oregon rounding
out the top-five.
CAREER RECORDS: With the final weekend of the regular-season upon
us, two Coyotes are making some noise on the career record page. Senior Alyssa Latham, who already holds the
top spot for all-time assists with 31, moved past Amy Wells into fourth-place
on the all-time goals scored list with 16.
Latham needs two goals to surpass Kathleen Marron into third-place, and
three overall points to move past Becky Robertson (27 goals, 11 assists) into
second-place all-time in that category.
Another Lady ‘Yote, Adria Carley (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS) has
entered the top-ten in all-time goals.
The junior has recorded nine goals in her two-plus seasons at Albertson,
tied with Jennifer Myers for seventh-place all-time. She is two goals away from sixth-place, currently held by
Carley’s former teammate, Chelsea Stevens.
LEAGUE LEADERS: As a team, the Lady ‘Yotes are in the middle of
the pack in most Cascade Conference statistical categories. Albertson is fourth in the league in assists
per game (2.3); fifth in points per game (6.25), goals per game (2.0), and
fouls per game (8.00); and sixth in the loop in goals against average
(2.70). The squad is also second in
offside violations per match (2.33), and seventh in corners per match
(2.67). Individually, Alyssa Latham is
third in the CCC in both assists (10) and assists per game (0.83), sixth in
points per game (1.50), and ninth in shots per game (3.50). Adria Carley is fifth with two game-winning
goals, with Kristi Dalsoglio (Boise, Idaho / Meridian HS) ranking
seventh in assists per game (0.42) and ninth in total assists (5).
PLAYING FOR ANOTHER TRIP WEST:
If the Lady ‘Yotes are to go to the
playoffs and another shot at Western Baptist, they will have to get it done on
the road, where they are 2-2-1 this season.
Friday afternoon is a daunting task, meeting No. 4 ranked Concordia. The Cavaliers (13-1-2, 9-0-1 CCC) have lost
just once this season (1-0 at Linfield) and topped Albertson 5-0 in
September. Concordia has the top
defense in the league – having allowed just three goals in 16 games this
season, with keeper Shelley Butcher (0.21 GAA, 12 shutouts) leading the way. Offensively, the Cavs have gotten production
from Malloree Enoch (14 goals, eight assists) and Aimee Wright (nine goals, 13
assists). It is the 18th
meeting between the teams, with Concordia holding a 13-2-2 edge, winning the
last 12 matches in a row. The possible
do-or-die match-up this Saturday between Albertson and Evergreen should
be a barnburner. The Coyotes knocked
off the surging Geoducks (4-9-2, 3-5-2) by a 2-1 margin in September – thanks
to outstanding play from its back four.
Evergreen has been firing on all cylinders in its three-game win streak,
as two-time All-CCC selection Tiffany Fenster (nine goals, three assists) has
found her scoring knack. Keeper Carly
Stewart (1.74 GAA) has not given up a goal in her last 327 minutes of
play. Although the Lady ‘Yotes won the
last meeting between the clubs, the Clams hold a 10-6 all-time edge.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (14-19 in 2002-03): Season Preview
OVERVIEW: As head coach Reagan Rossi enters her third
season as head coach of the Albertson College women’s basketball team,
experience is not an issue for the 2003-04 team. The new edition of the Lady ‘Yotes returns four starters from last
season’s team that reached the first-round of the Cascade Conference
Tournament, and a total of 11 players with experience will roam the court. In fact, the updated version of the ‘Yotes
will have the biggest roster in school history – a total of 18 players.
REPLACING BAILEY: What Rossi will have to do is replace one of the
more dominant players in Coyote history in post Kristen Bailey. The All-Conference player led the team in
points, rebounds, and blocked shots – setting school records for blocks and
rebounds in a game. Outside of Bailey,
however, the remainder of last season’s team is pretty-much intact.
THE FORWARDS: A solid grouping of players return up front – led
by the consistent Lindsey Karren.
The senior averaged eight points and eight rebounds a game, recording
11-or-more rebounds on 12 occasions.
Complementing her in the paint is fellow senior, Michelle Dyreng. The 6-3 Dyreng transferred to Albertson in
January last year and averaged four points and three rebounds in a reserve
role. Also in the mix are returners Sarah
Wilkin and Kim Strunk. Rossi
is also excited about junior college transfer, Kasey Hooter, and her
ability around the bucket. Hooter
averaged nearly a double-double at Walla Walla Community College as a sophomore
and was an All-NWAACC selection.
POPPING THE TREY: The Lady ‘Yote shooters are also plentiful – as
starters Heidi Goicoechea and Dani Cotterell both return. Heading into her senior season, Goicoechea
has a chance to rewrite many of the career school-records – after going over
the 1,000-point mark as a junior. The
Burley native averaged a career-high 13 points and six rebounds – including a
school-record 36-point game against Fresno Pacific, to earn honorable mention
All-Conference honors. Cotterell
started all 33 games as a true freshman, draining 61 three-pointers and
averaging ten points a game. The duo
has the ability to put points up in a hurry if they get hot. Two others should factor into the mix. Junior transfer Tabatha Hyer returns
to her hometown for the final two years of college. At Umpqua Community College, she averaged ten points and six
rebounds a game as a sophomore.
Freshman Libby Baker, a native of Montana, is also a role player
that can shoot from the outside.
OVERLOADED AT THE POINT: One position that is overloaded with experience is
at point-guard – where four returners and a redshirt will each vie for playing
time. Four-year player and part-time
starter Carley Williams joins third-year player Krystal Thacker
and second-year player Alyssa Latham as one of the more experienced sets
of floor generals in the league.
Thacker led the group with nine points and three assists a game, while
both Williams (two points, two assists) and Latham (four points, two assists)
did their part distributing the ball.
Also returning is sophomore Angie Gribble, who saw action in 11 games,
along with redshirt freshman Annie Roeser, who sat out the season with
an injury.
PRESEASON: A tough year of scheduling has the Lady ‘Yotes
playing just seven non-conference games – but the schedule is very
demanding. The team opens up the season
at NCAA Division I Boise State, then heads to Salt Lake City for a trio of
games – against Westminster, Great Falls, and Montana-Western. To make the schedule even tougher, add a
home-and-home series with rival Northwest Nazarene, which advanced to the NCAA
Division II Tournament last season, along with a road trip to Northwest
Christian in Oregon.
ABOUT THE CASCADE CONFERENCE: The Cascade Conference should be very interesting,
as defending champion Southern Oregon had to replace four of their five
starters. The Raiders were picked third
in the preseason coaches’ poll. Heading
the list was Oregon Tech, who eliminated the Coyotes from the playoffs last
season. OIT returns four starters and
had a good recruiting class, as did Western Baptist, who was picked to finish
second. Eastern Oregon, whose guards
are three-year starters, was picked to finish fourth, followed by the
Coyotes. Don’t count out teams not in
the top-five – Warner Pacific is a dark horse with a good recruiting class,
with Concordia, Evergreen, and Northwest each improving on their 2002-03
teams. Cascade probably has the
toughest road – losing three All-Conference players and their head coach.
ON
THE AIR: All home Coyote games are scheduled
to be broadcast live on the Internet via the Albertson athletic website. For the third consecutive year, Jordan
Komoto and Jake McClean will be handling the play-by-play. Stay tuned for more information regarding
internet broadcasts.
