GENERAL ATHLETICS NEWS:  

BASKETBALL SEASON TICKETS AND C.A.A. INFORMATION: Basketball season ticket and revamped Coyote Athletic Association brochures were mailed out to alumni, boosters, and fans on Monday.  Become more than a fan, become a C.A.A. member and receive new benefits – such as license plate holders, t-shirts, hats, polo shirts, jackets, and travel bags – all while supporting either the C.A.A. or your favorite Coyote teams.  For more information, contact Dave Hahn at 459-5835 or Mike Safford at 459-5681.

C.A.A. BOOSTER DINNERS: Thanks to the over 80 folks that attended the first Coyote Athletic Association dinner on Monday night.  The next booster dinner will be on Monday night, Dec. 1, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fireplace Room at the Simplot Dining Hall on the Albertson campus.  

SOFTBALL STEAK AND CRAB FEED: The Albertson softball team will be holding a Steak and Crab feed on Saturday, November 1, at the Boise Police Clubhouse.  Tickets for the event and auction are $25 and can be purchased from a Coyote softball player or by calling head coach Kelly Gibbons at 459-5113.

‘YOTES TO BEGIN SEASON IN OCTOBER: Looking through the archives of Albertson men’s basketball, there were days when the hoop season would open the first week of December.  In 2003-04, it isn’t even November, but a late October date at Montana Tech when the newest version of the Coyotes take the floor for the first time. 

 

WHAT TO LOOK FOR FROM THE SQUAD: The early key for Albertson is trying to find successful combinations between the returners and three key newcomers.  Guards Joe Green (Pocatello, Idaho / BYU-Idaho) and Andy Harper (Idaho Falls, Idaho / Columbia Basin CC) join forward Tom Perkes (Spokane, Wash. / Big Bend CC) in the starting line-up for the second-consecutive season.  The other two spots will be filled by returners Derek Brown (Las Vegas, Nev. / Desert Pines HS) and Justin McCarthy (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS), redshirt big man Steve Humphreys (Sparks, Nev. / Lassen CC), or transfers E.J. Costello (Pleasanton, Calif. / Chabot CC) and Eric Howard (Las Vegas, Nev. / Yavapai CC).

 

SOLID AT THE STRIPE: Albertson hopes for a repeat performance at the foul line this season.  During the 2002-03 campaign, the ‘Yotes led the NAIA Division II in free throw percentage at .775 percent.

 

NAIA NATIONAL POLL: The Albertson College men's basketball team was ranked No. 12 in the preseason NAIA Division II national poll, released Tuesday by the NAIA sports information staff.  The Coyotes are one of three Cascade Conference teams in the poll, as No. 2 ranked Oregon Tech and No. 25 Concordia join Albertson in the rankings.  Albertson finished the 2002-03 season 22-14, but were one of the hottest teams in the nation at the end of the regular season - winning 11 of their final 14 games, including three road contests in the Cascade Conference Tournament, and a 53-44 victory of Taylor (Ind.) at the national tournament.  Jamestown (N.D.), who knocked Albertson out of the national tourney last season, is ranked No. 1, followed by OIT, Cedarville (Ohio), defending national champ Northwestern (Iowa), and Siena Heights (Mich.).  Also in the poll is William Jewell (Mo.), whom the Coyotes will play next Saturday at the Las Vegas Invitational.

 

CCC PRESEASON POLL: (based on 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 scale): Oregon Tech (8 first place votes) 13, Albertson (2) 22, Concordia 31, Southern Oregon 43, Western Baptist 50, Eastern Oregon 64, Warner Pacific 73, Evergreen 79, Northwest 79, Cascade 95.

 

OFF TO MONTANA: For the first time since the 1989-90 season, the Coyotes will be making the trek north to Montana Tech and Montana-Western.  It will be the second-consecutive year Albertson meets Tech (12-20 in 2002-03), whom the ‘Yotes defeated 105-55 at the Fall Classic last season in Caldwell.  The Orediggers opened up the new season a week ago in Canada, defeating Fraser Valley (82-70), but losing to host Lethbridge (score not reported).  Forwards Jaime Tadvick (10.6 ppg) and Pat Weber (10.0 ppg) are the top returners for Tech.  It is the 22nd meeting between the clubs with the Coyotes holding a 14-7 all-time advantage in the series, which began in 1971.  Western (10-20) struggled with injuries last season – but will be much, much improved this season.  The Bulldogs dropped a pair of games to Albertson (88-76 and 84-65) – but opened the new season with routs over Fraser Valley (101-85) and Lethbridge (147-87).  The nine-man squad has four players  already averaging over 15-points a game – University of Montana transfer Sam Riddle (30.0 ppg), Jason Buell (22.5 ppg), Neil Christiaens (28.5 ppg), and Josh Keller (15.0 ppg).  To say Western likes to pop the trey is an understatement – 59-percent of their shots this season have come from outside the arc – and they have made 48-percent of their attempts.  It is the 45th meeting between the teams since 1955, with the Coyotes holding a 27-17 advantage.

 

COYOTES ON THE RADIO AND INTERNET: All 29 regular-season contests will be broadcast live on radio and internet (via the Albertson Athletic Website) during the 2003-04 season with Mike Safford Jr. calling the action for the third-consecutive year.  Join him for the season opener in Butte, Mont. on the home of Coyote basketball, KCID 1490-AM, Thursday night – pre-game festivities at 6:45 p.m., with the tip-off at 7:05 p.m.  Things change on Saturday (conflict with Washington State football), as the 4 p.m. game at Montana-Western will be broadcast on KGEM 1140-AM.  Coyote basketball, brought to you by Paul’s Market, Hopkins Financial Services, Les Schwab Tires, Elliotts Sports Pub and Grill, U.S. Bank, and Franklin Building Supply.

MEN’S SOCCER (12-4, 9-3 CCC): Calpin wins No. 200, Coyotes to host Western Baptist in conference tournament semifinals

CALPIN WINS NO. 200: In dramatic fashion, the Albertson men’s soccer team rallied from a 3-1 second half deficit to defeat Warner Pacific, 4-3, last Friday afternoon before a huge partisan crowd at Symms Field, giving Coyote head coach John Calpin his 200th victory as a collegiate head coach.  In his 18th season with the ‘Yotes, Calpin has recorded 186 victories with the men’s program, 14 with the ladies program, to become the 16th NAIA coach to reach the milestone.

ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM ANNOUNCED: Five Albertson College men's soccer players were named to the All-Cascade Conference team, as voted by the seven head coaches in the league on Sunday afternoon.   First-team selections included midfielder Ryan Abo (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) and sweeper Drake Jakovac (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) - both juniors.  For Abo, it is his second All-CCC honor (earned second-team honors in 2001), while Jakovac, who earned All-American honors as a sophomore, picked up his second consecutive first-team award.  Heading the list of second-team honorees was Jason Southward (Hailey, Idaho / Wood River HS), who picked up the award for the third-consecutive year.  Also earning second-team honors were senior midfielders Roger Aguilar (Payette, Idaho / Payette HS) (a first-team selection in 2002) and Brad Thornburg (Yreka, Calif. / Yreka HS) (a second-team selection in 2001).  Concordia striker Tony Ballew was named CCC Player-of-the-Year, while Concordia head coach Dan Birkey and Warner Pacific head coach Bernie Fagan were Co-Coaches-of-the-Year.

 

WHAT A RALLY: Things looked bleak for the Coyotes in the big win against Warner Pacific, trailing for the first time all season at halftime, 3-1.  It didn’t take long for the momentum to shift, as Roger Aguilar swept up the left side and blasted home a goal in the 48th minute.  The Knights would drop back into a defensive wall, but the ‘Yotes would get the equalizer in the 75th minute, as Ryan Abo took a pass in the box and flicked home the goal – allowing the big crowd to be energized.  Albertson would win it in the 86th minute, as Aguilar chipped a ball from left-to-right over the defense, Brad Thornburg playing the ball into the box to the open Joe Chandler (Nampa, Idaho / University of Utah) who slotted home his fifth game-winner of the season.

 

BIG “J” INJURED: What made the comeback more remarkable was the fact that the Coyotes played the majority of the contest without leading scorer, Jason Southward.  The junior, who scored the first goal of the contest in the 15th minute, strained his left hamstring on a long run in the 17th minute and did not return to the game.  After sitting out the Western Baptist game on Saturday, Southward returned to practice on Tuesday and will be a game-time decision for his availability on Thursday against Western Baptist.

 

WESTERN WINS AGAIN LATE: Western Baptist seemingly has the Coyotes number in the last two years, as the Warriors won for the fourth-consecutive time against Albertson, a 1-0 win on Saturday.  A back-and-forth scoreless game saw Western hit the post or crossbar on four separate occasions and the ‘Yotes miss wide or high on a handful of tries.  However, Danny Agee found the twine with just over three minutes left to give Western the victory – their second 1-0 win over Albertson this season.

 

REGIONAL POLL: With the Coyotes having their seven-game winning streak snapped by Western Baptist, the NAIA Region I poll was also readjusted a bit.  Simon Fraser continues to rule the roost, after big wins over Western Washington and British Columbia.  Concordia moved into the No. 2 slot, having won six of their last seven matches.  Western Baptist moves to No. 3 with their season sweep of Albertson, with the ‘Yotes falling to No. 4.  Warner Pacific rounds out the top-five.

 

PLAYOFFS: Things shaped up a bit in the regional tournament race this week – as Concordia clinched an automatic berth to the regional with their CCC regular-season championship.  The winner of the CCC Tournament will earn a second berth, with the top-two remaining spots selected by Longo rating.  If Concordia wins the CCC Tournament, the top-three Longo ratings will head to regionals.  Heading into the final week of the regular-season in the NAIA, Simon Fraser leads the Region I with a 238.3 rating, followed by Westminster (227.5), Concordia (213.8), and Albertson (212.5).  Western Baptist (197.8) and Warner Pacific (175.9) can only reach the regional with a CCC Tournament win, while Albertson can advance if themselves or Concordia wins the CCC tourney.

 

SIMON FRASER PLAYER MISSING:  It has been 15 days since Simon Fraser University student-athlete Ronale Naidu disappeared and no new information with regards to his whereabouts has come forward.  Naidu, 21, is a redshirt player in his second season with the SFU Clan men's soccer team after transferring from the University of New Mexico. He was last seen in the early morning hours on Monday, Oct. 13 at a Vancouver night club. Naidu phoned his mom at 2:30 am that morning to say he was heading home and he hasn't been seen since. His car was found just off the Granville Street Bridge in Vancouver after it had been involved in a single-vehicle accident on the bridge.  "His family and our players are just devastated," said SFU Coach Dave Elligott. "We are all hoping that someone who knows something will come forward and will help us find Ronale.  We are all just in shock because this is so out of character for him and days are passing with no new information," said Elligott. "Ronale is a responsible individual, who is punctual and mature, with exceptional character and we just want to know that he is safe."  The Coyotes would ask for you to kept SFU in your thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.

 

REMEMBER LAST SEASON’S PLAYOFF GAME: As Western Baptist and Albertson play for the third time this season, we must look back to 2002 and the same scenario – a semifinal game at Symms Field between the teams.  A wind-chill of ten-degrees seemingly favored the Coyotes, but it was Western which got two goals from Patrick Daka and two goals from Danny Agee to stun Albertson, 5-0.  It may be déjà vu, as temperatures around 35 degrees are forecasted, along with a 30-percent chance of snow showers.  Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.

 

ASSIST RECORD IN JEOPARDY: Assists have been plentiful for the Coyotes during the 2003 season, as two individuals look to break the single-season school record.  Both Ryan Abo and Joe Chandler are tied for the team lead with 14 assists, equaling the school record Coe Michaelson set during the 2000 and 2001 seasons.  As a team, the Coyotes have already set a new school mark with 75 assists on the season – having broken the single-game record with 12 assists on two occasions.

 

CAREER NUMBERS: Both Jason Southward, Ryan Abo, and Roger Aguilar continue to climb up the charts in the ‘Yotes career record book.  Southward has scored 42 goals in his career, just tying him for fourth-place in school history, has assisted on 21 goals, good enough for seventh-place all-time, and his 105 career points rank him No. 5 all-time.  Abo has tied Chuck Gazdik for the No. 3 slot in assists, Aguilar has assisted on 22 goals in his career, sixth-best all-time.

VOLLEYBALL (13-7, 9-4 CCC): Lady ‘Yotes to play three matches this week, sit alone in third-place after loss to Concordia

 

LAST WEEK: Defeated Western Baptist, 3-0; lost to Concordia, 3-0.

 

COMING UP: vs. Eastern Oregon, Tuesday, 7 p.m.; at Northwest, Friday, 7 p.m. (PST); at Evergreen, Saturday, 7 p.m. (PST)

 

CASCADE CONFERENCE WIN STREAK ENDED: Over a month had gone by for the Albertson volleyball team without a loss within the Cascade Conference, vaulting the Lady ‘Yotes from the cellar to a tie for first-place.  However, after nine-consecutive CCC victories, four-time defending league champ Concordia knocked off the Coyotes in three games on Saturday, ending the run.  All-in-all, 34 days had passed between loop losses – a school record.

 

MORE ON THE STREAK: During the run, Albertson had a streak of 18 consecutive games won within the conference, beginning with the final three games of a 3-2 win at Warner Pacific – which preceded five consecutive 3-0 victories.  Concordia holds the CCC record for consecutive matches won in league – with 66.

 

REGIONAL RANKINGS: What can the Lady ‘Yotes do to rise in the weekly top-ten regional poll?  Win 12-of-13 and find themselves as high as No. 6?  Despite all of the lobbying, Albertson finds themselves No. 7 this week, as Concordia jumped above the Coyotes after their win in Caldwell on Saturday night.  Southern Oregon sits atop the poll (No. 22 in the NAIA) after a five-game win at Oregon Tech, followed by Montana Tech (No. 18 in the NAIA), which lost a home match to Montana-Western.  Carroll, Lewis-Clark State, and Montana-Western round out the top-five.  Following Concordia and Albertson are Oregon Tech, Western Baptist, and Northwest.

 

WESTERN STRUGGLES IN CALDWELL: A dominating performance by the Lady ‘Yotes completed a regular-season sweep of Western Baptist on Friday night – a 30-18, 30-17, 30-28 thumping of a very good Warrior team.  Brittany Bonnett (Logandale, Nev. / Dixie State CC) had a match-high 16 kills and 12 digs for the ‘Yotes.  Albertson hit .326 percent on the evening, as four players recorded eight or more kills.  The Coyotes also recorded seven aces, without committing a receive error.  The Coyotes were never threatened in the first two games - jumping out to a 10-4 lead in Game 1 and a 21-10 lead in Game 2.  Western, who was in a three-way logjam in second-place in the loop at the time, held 10-5 and 23-17 leads in Game 3 - but three Bonnett kills tied the game at 25-25.  Fran Hartman (Lakeview, Ore. / Lakeview HS) ended the match with a quick kill, one of her 11 spikes on the night.  Amber Igoe (Blackfoot, Idaho / Firth HS) and Tiffany Sower (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) each had 14 digs for the 'Yotes.

 

HAVE YOU SEEN THE ‘YOTES ON TV? (YES!): If you blinked, you might have missed it – but the Lady ‘Yotes had their moment in the sun on TV this year.  KTVB’s J Bates did a profile of Tiffany Sower for last Thursday’s newscast – profiling the Treasure Valley product.  This follows a similar story that KBCI’s Ted Dawson did on the Lady ‘Yotes in August, prior to their opening games in Montana, and KIVI’s  Joe Hughes’ coverage of the Albertson-Northwest Nazarene marathon match in September.  Who ever said NAIA volleyball was not newsworthy?

 

MORE ON THE CONCORDIA LOSS: A balanced Concordia attack was the key to their victory, handing Albertson just their second 3-0 loss of the season (first was to Carroll in August).  The Lady ‘Yotes fell behind early in all three games, rallying to tie Game 1 at 28-28 before falling.  The hosts had 28 attack errors on Saturday night and just one player with double-digit kills (Tiffany Sower with 12).

 

RECORD PACE: Albertson is currently on pace to set a new school-record for kills per game in a season.  The Lady ‘Yotes are averaging 15.30 kills per game, ahead of the 15.23 kills per game they averaged during the 2000 season.

 

CONFERENCE LEADERS: Albertson continues to dominate the Cascade Conference team statistics, finding themselves among the top-two in all six categories.  The Coyotes lead the league in kills per game (15.30) and assists per game (14.00), while ranking second in attack percentage (.230), aces per game (2.68), blocks per game (2.10), and digs per game (15.89).  No less than seven Lady ‘Yote regulars find their names in the CCC’s top-ten in individual categories.  Kristen Bailey (Fountain Green, Utah / Snow CC)  is the top-dog in both the blocks per game (1.16) and attack percentage (.336) categories, while Tiffany Sower is second in the loop in aces per game (0.62) and tenth in digs per game (2.98).  Brittany Bonnett is third in digs per game (3.35) and fifth in aces per game (0.52).  Both setters are on the list – Amanda Basañez (Elko, Nev. / College of Southern Idaho)  (eighth in assists per game) and Erin Cherrington (Granby, Colo. / Middle Fork HS) (ninth in assists per game), while Fran Hartman is sixth in blocks per game (0.77) and libero Amber Igoe is eighth in digs per game (3.06).

 

IGOE CLOSING IN ON EIGHTH-PLACE IN BUMPS: Coming into weekend play, senior Amber Igoe has recorded 874 digs in her four-year Coyote career, ranking her ninth on the all-time list.  She is 11 bumps away from eighth-place Miranda Harris, and 126 digs away from becoming the seventh player in school history to eclipse the 1,000 mark in a career.

 

THREE GAMES THIS WEEK – INCLUDING A TUESDAY NIGHT AT HOME: A key week lies ahead for the Albertson volleyball team, as three matches loom before them.  The Coyotes open up the week with the final game of their homestand against Eastern Oregon on Tuesday.  The Mountaineers (2-19, 1-12) have struggled this season – but have one of the top outsides in the league in Kaki McLean (2.85 kills/g).  Albertson swept Eastern earlier this season for their 16th win in a row over the Mounties.  The Coyotes hold a 25-9 all-time edge in the series.  The ladies then embark on their final roadtrip of the regular-season with a Friday match at Northwest, and a Saturday meeting at Evergreen.  The Eagles (14-9, 9-5) are in a big grouping of teams battling for playoff position and are looking for revenge after a five-game loss to the Coyotes in Caldwell.  Northwest is led by outsides Lisa Langmade (4.23 k/g) and Kelly Clarke (3.36), along with one of the loops best setters in Jessie Buck (11.13 assists/g).  Albertson had won the first 11 meetings in the series prior to 2002, but has gone 2-2 since, including a loss at the Cascade Conference tournament last season.  The Geoducks (12-9, 8-6) are the surprise of the league – yet a very hot-and-cold club.  Evergreen swept its season series with Northwest, and swept home matches with Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech – but struggled mightily on the road against the Coyotes and Warner Pacific.  Meredith Lane (3.32 k/g, 0.76 blocks/g) and Kristen Bartley (3.28 k/g, 0.77 b/g) are a solid pair at the net.  Albertson has won four-of-five matches with the Clams, but lost in five-games at Evergreen last season.  

 

RAFFLE FOR QUILT: The Coyote volleyball team is holding a raffle for an 86-square inch quilt to be drawn on May 9, 2004.  The original design “Crown Jubilee” will be present at all home matches and is valued at over $800.  Tickets are just one dollar each, or six tickets for five dollars – and can be purchased at all home volleyball matches, or by calling coach Liz Mendiola at 459-5858.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (6-7-1, 5-5-1 CCC): Playoff hopes dashed by losses to No. 4 ranked Concordia and Evergreen

 

LAST WEEK: Lost at No. 4 Concordia, 4-0; lost at Evergreen, 2-1.

 

COMING UP: Season complete.

 

AND JUST LIKE THAT IT IS OVER: A five-game win streak by Evergreen, coupled with three consecutive losses at the end of the season had disastrous effects for the Lady ‘Yote soccer team, as Albertson missed a second-straight playoff berth by an eyelash.  With losses to Concordia and a 2-1 defeat at Evergreen, the Coyotes 5-5-1 mark, good enough for 16 points (three for a win, one for a tie), was not enough to surpass the 17 points for the Geoducks (5-4-2 record).

 

WHAT THE PLAYOFFS LOOK LIKE: The top team in each of the two divisions will host first-round games on Wednesday.  Western Baptist will meet Evergreen, while Concordia will meet Southern Oregon – with a championship game set for Saturday.  With the regionals set for the following week, three of the teams (Western, Southern, and Concordia) are in the mix with their Longo rating, as are independents Simon Fraser and Carroll.

 

CAREER ENDS FOR TEN SENIORS: For ten seniors on the 2002-03 club, Saturday marked the end of their collegiate soccer career.  For Alyssa Latham (Walla Walla, Wash. / Walla Walla CC) – it ended with a sweet assist, her 32nd of her career – establishing a school record that will be difficult to surpass.

 

SLIM PICKINGS AGAINST CONCORDIA: Concordia University is ranked No. 4 in the nation for something – holding the Coyotes to just three shots in a 4-0 shutout on Friday afternoon in Portland is one of them.  The Cavaliers scored three goals via headers in registering their fifth-consecutive shutout overall.  One bright spot for the Lady ‘Yotes was the four goals allowed to Concordia was the lowest scoring output for the Cavs against Albertson in nearly five seasons.

 

COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT: An early 2-0 deficit on the road is not something that the Lady ‘Yotes wished for heading into their match at Evergreen on Saturday – but that is what they faced.  Kaylen Kelly knocked home a pair of goals in the first 30 minutes to put the Coyotes in a hole.  Albertson fought back, as Alyssa Latham ripped a free kick from near the halfway line that was redirected into the net by senior Kristi Dalsoglio (Boise, Idaho / Meridian HS).  Latham had another chance in the second half snuffed out by the Clams – ending the Coyotes season.

 

ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS: The 24-person All-Cascade Conference team will be voted on and released by the nine coaches in the league later this week, with the All-NAIA Region I team to be announced within the next 14 days.
