WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Recruit featured in Sports Illustrated article

DUFERRENA AMONG NEVADA'S BEST: Coyote freshman recruit Megan Duferrena is featured in this week's Sports Illustrated magazine as part of the publication's "50 States in 50 Weeks" promotion.  The high school senior at Lowry High in Winnemucca, Nev. was featured in the magazine as part of the Starter All-American Teen promotion, as not only is Duferrena a great athlete, but a great role model for kids in her hometown - with a mention that she is going to play ball at Albertson College.  The Starter All-American Teen recogizes one outstanding teen per state between July 2003 and July 2004. Honorees must be between 13 and 19 years of age, participate in organized athletics (as a player or coach, equipment manager, statistician, etc.) and be an exemplary role model for their peers and community. A panel of celebrity judges will select each state winner from nominations collected at this site and through other research. Every state winner will be profiled in a Sports Illustrated Special Advertising Feature and top runners-up will be recognized in an online Honor Roll for their state.

CROSS COUNTRY: Coyotes sign three runners

FIRST RUNNERS SIGNED BY THE 'YOTES: Albertson cross country and track coach Patrick McCurry has announced the signing of a trio of student-athletes who will compete for the Coyotes next year.  Leading the list is Shannon Edwards, who has transferred to Albertson from Eastern Oregon.  The Sherwood, Ore., native was the No. 3 runner on an Eastern team that qualified for the NAIA Championships.  She placed 15th in the Cascade Conference meet in 2003.  The men's squad will be bolstered by two recruits - freshman Jesse Chlebeck and sophomore Jacob Haas.  Chlebeck was captain of his high school team in Eagan, Minn., while Haas is an improving runner who spent two seasons at Eastern Oregon.  Albertson will begin their first season of cross country since the 1970s in September.

VOLLEYBALL: Lady 'Yotes sign high school middle

HOGUE HEADED TO CALDWELL: Head volleyball coach Liz Mendiola announces the signing of Katie Hogue for the 2004 season.  The high school senior out of Sparks, Nev., was a first-team High Desert League selection in 2003 at Reed High, while also serving as the starting middle blocker for the Sierra Nevada Volleyball Club.  "We are excited Katie chose Albertson to continue her career," said Mendiola.  "She is a dedicated athlete and student and is an excellent addition to the Coyote program."

BASEBALL: Stalling named to All-Region team as ‘Yotes season ends at regional tournament

LAST WEEK: at NAIA Region I Tournament, Portland, Ore. – lost to British Columbia (12-8), defeated Oregon Tech (4-0), lost to British Columbia (11-4)

COMING UP: Season Complete

ON THE AIR: Special thanks to Dave Combes and Marshall Sage of Sporting News Radio, KIOV 1450-AM for airing Coyote baseball games on the radio.

STALLING NAMED TO ALL-REGION TEAM: For the second consecutive season, Coyote infielder Greg Stalling (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) was named to the All-NAIA Region I team, as selected by the seven coaches in the region.  The sophomore had a banner year for Albertson, leading the region with 88 hits, 64 runs scored, 31 stolen bases, while hitting a team-high .381.   Leading the way was Lewis-Clark State with six selections, Concordia and British Columbia with three, Oregon Tech with two, and Albertson and Western Baptist each with one.  Michael Devaney of Concordia was named NAIA Region I Player-of-the-Year.  All players on the squad are eligible for NAIA All-America status.

COYOTES LAND THREE ON ALL-CONFERENCE SQUAD: Three Coyotes were members of the 15-person All-Cascade Conference team, selected last week.  Third-baseman Greg Stalling earned All-CCC honors and was runner-up in Player-of-the-Year balloting (won by Oregon Tech’s Ryan Wilson).  Also earning All-CCC honors were first-baseman Josh Orr (Winnemucca, Nev. / Lowry HS) and pitcher Brad Burrow (Taylorsville, Utah / College of Southern Idaho).  Orr led the ‘Yotes with 48 RBI on the season, while Burrow led the team and was tied for the region lead with nine victories.  The Coyotes also had three players named as honorable mention selections – sophomore catcher Nate Freese (Vancouver, Wash. / Skyview HS), sophomore outfielder Jake McGrady (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS), and junior pitcher Matt Bergstrom (Hermiston, Ore. / Hermiston HS).

REGIONAL TOURNAMENT RECAP: Albertson saw their 2004 season come to a close over the weekend at the NAIA Region I Tournament in Portland.  The tourney opener was a heartbreaking loss for the Coyotes, as British Columbia erased a 8-2 deficit by scoring ten runs in the final two innings, capped by a three-run double by Mark Capone in the ninth to take a 12-8 win.  The loss overshadowed a 4-for-5 outing from Josh Orr and a 3-for-5 game from Sage Kendall (Parma, Idaho / National American Univ.).  Albertson fought back with a 4-0 victory in Friday’s 9 a.m. tilt with Oregon Tech, scoring all four runs in the sixth inning.  However, the momentum was short-lived, as British Columbia scored eight runs in the first inning of an 11-4 win over Albertson to eliminate the ‘Yotes.

CAREER PERFORMANCE FROM GRUBY: In an effort to key his top-three pitchers available for the semifinal and championship round of the regional, head coach Shawn Humberger rolled the dice and started senior Noah Grubenhoff (Selah, Wash. / Columbia Basin CC) against Oregon Tech.  The move paid off, as “Gruby” had his best outing in his two years as a Coyote, throwing a complete game five-hit shutout in the 4-0 win.  The right-hander, who had a 22.85 ERA in just four-plus innings of work all season, struck out seven OIT batters in the victory.

SOLID REGIONALS FROM ORR, BURKE: Leading the Albertson offense during the regional tournament were Josh Orr and Pat Burke (Sisters, Ore. / Sisters HS).  In the three games in Portland, Orr went 6-for-12 with three RBI, including a solo home run on his final at bat of his collegiate career.  Burke hit safely in all three games, going 6-for-13 with a home run and two RBI.

LOOKING BACK AT THE YEAR: For the 12th consecutive season, Albertson posted 29-or-more wins – despite having a losing record for the first time since the 1970s.  The difference between a 29-34 record and a possible 37-26 mark was the fact that the ‘Yotes lost eight games this season when holding a lead heading into the seventh inning, including five games from the ninth inning on.  The squad set single-season records for hit by pitches with 131, but the pitchers set records they would like to forget – most hits, runs, earned runs, hit by pitches, balks, and innings pitched in school history.  The Coyotes finished the year with a 21-22 record against NAIA foes, 3-2 vs. NCAA Division III teams, 4-5 against Division II clubs, and 1-5 against D-I opponents.

SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS: Seven different Coyotes have moved into the top-ten on the single-season record list following the 2004 season.  Greg Stalling has made the most noise – as his stolen base total ranks third all-time, his walk total (43) fourth, his stolen base attempts (35) and on base percentage (.503) fifth, his hits and hit by pitch (16) total sixth, and his at bats (231) total tenth.  Jake McGrady has stolen himself into the record book, as his 37 attempts rank tied for second all-time, and his steal total (30) ranks tied for foruth.  Josh Orr has been hit 19 times by a pitch, good enough for No. 3 in the book, Billy Arko (Mountain Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS) is tied for seventh in triples (4), while Nate Freese is tied for sixth in hit-by-pitches with 16.  Rounding out the single-season marks are Brad Burrow and Matt Bergstrom – Burrow fourth all-time in innings pitched (107.2) and tied for sixth in starts (14), with “Berg” tied for fifth in decisions in a season (14).

CAREER RECORDS: Four Coyotes have seen themselves move into the top-ten career record book as well.  Longevity has helped Josh Orr, as the four-year senior is third all-time in games played (189) and is eighth all-time with 500 at bats.  Brad Burrow finds himself in the top-ten in four categories – No. 4 in games started (26), No. 5 in saves (6) and innings pitched (194.2), and is tied for seventh with 16 wins.  Matt Bergstrom ranks sixth in all-time appearances (49), tied for seventh in shutouts (2) and innings pitched (189.1), and is ninth in strikeouts (121).  Last, but not least, is reliever Sam Hackett (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS), who has appeared in 41 games, ninth-best in school history.

SOFTBALL: Mathews named to All-NAIA Region I team, 2004 season recap

COMING UP: Season Complete

MATHEWS NAMED TO ALL-REGION TEAM FOR SECOND TIME: For the second consecutive season, Albertson College catcher Tiffany Mathews (Las Vegas, Nev. / Eldorado HS) was named to the All-NAIA Region I softball team, as selected by the seven regional coaches in balloting last week.  Mathews, who set a school record in 2003 with a .416 batting average, finished this season with a .274 average – while throwing out 42-percent of would-be base stealers.  The junior was the only catcher selected to the team.

LEADING THE ALL-REGION BALLOTING: Simon Fraser led the way with five players on the 18-member All-Region team – including sweeping the individual honors.  Pitcher Erin Thomas was named both Pitcher and Player-of-the-Year, while skipper Mike Renney was named regional Coach-of-the-Year.  All seven teams within the region had representation on the team.

REGIONAL TOURNAMENT RESULTS: As expected, No. 2 ranked Simon Fraser claimed their fourth-consecutive NAIA Region I crown, as the Clan swept all three games in the tournament.  After dispatching Eastern Oregon 11-0, the Clan took a pair of games from No. 22 and Cascade Conference champion Southern Oregon, 4-1 and 11-5 to earn the automatic berth to the Women’s World Series.  Southern took two games from Oregon Tech, but fell to 0-8 against the “Big Red Machine” from Canada.

COYOTES SNUBBED ON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM: For the first time in the three years of softball, Albertson College shockingly did not have a representative on the 15-person All-Cascade Conference team.  Of the group, nine infielders were selected, four outfielders, two pitchers, and no catchers – with the Lady ‘Yotes the only team without a player on the squad.  Two Coyotes, Tiffany Mathews and Anna Schroeder (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) were among the 11 selected as honorable mention honorees.  Southern Oregon pitcher Miranda Gillespie was named Pitcher-of-the-Year, Oregon Tech’s Amanda Doherty was named Player-of-the-Year, while Dan Miles and Mary Bradford of OIT were named Coaches-of-the-Year.

LADY ‘YOTES STRUGGLE TO TEN WIN SEASON: In looking back at the 2004 softball season, the fact that Albertson managed just a 10-33 record is a bit deceiving.  The Coyotes had to replace four key positions – No. 1 starting pitcher, centerfielder, third-baseman, and second-baseman, and by the end of the season, the roles were set.  Unfortunately, the losses piled up in the wake.  The Lady ‘Yotes finished last in the Cascade Conference in each of the main statistical categories (.220 batting average, 5.95 earned run average, .928 fielding percentage), while setting a school record for least number of wins.  Despite the futility (Albertson tied a school record by losing 16 games due to the mercy rule), the Coyotes lost games in which they held leads from the fourth inning on, all against teams with 20-or-more wins.

SINGLE-GAME RECORDS: Three individual and two team single-game records were established in 2004.  The ‘Yotes set four of the marks in a 13-5 victory over Northwest Nazarene in April, as Heather McClure (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) scored a record four runs, Katie Theisen (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) recorded two triples, and Anna Schroeder knocked in five runs.  The ‘Yotes also had three triples as a team in the game, also a record.  Joining the list was a stretch of three consecutive games (one vs. NNU, two against Walla Walla) that Albertson shutout its opponent, a streak of 19 straight innings without giving up a run.

SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS: The ‘Yotes saw three players jump into top-three spots on the single-season record list.  Laura Milne (Woodburn, Ore. / Blanchet Catholic HS) established a new record for ERA in a season (2.69), while Katie Theisen became the first Coyote to hit more that one homer in a season by smacking two, along with recording four triples during the year, tops on the list.  Anna Schroeder saw her name on the list in six different categories – leading the group in hits (40) and runs (22), ranking second in triples (3) and stolen bases (21), and third in a single-season in batting average (.328) and on base percentage (.388).

CAREER RECORDS: Longevity in the program helps when leading the way in Albertson career records.  Two of the stalwarts over the past three seasons dominate the list, as Tiffany Mathews and Kira Leaton (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) rank in the top-three in eight different categories.  Mathews holds the school record for hits (103), doubles (18), games played (125), and games started (123), ranking second in RBI (39) and at bats (327), and third in runs scored (33).  Leaton is first in triples (6), RBI (50), at bats (338), and runs scored (45), while raning second in hits (89), games played (123), and games started (121).
