BASEBALL TEAM IN VOLUNTEERING
MOOD: Not only is
Shawn Humberger’s Albertson baseball team one of the top NAIA squads on the

during the offseason, lending a hand to many folks in need. The squad spent time this September as part
of the Clean Caldwell Day, sprucing up our hometown. The hardballers are serving as officials for Optimist youth
football games this fall, along with serving as volunteers for the Women’s
Fitness Challenge race in Boise. Hats
off to you, Coach Humberger and crew.

COMING
UP: at Cascade, Friday, 4 p.m. (PDT); at
Concordia, Saturday, 1 p.m.
GREAT START TO 2003: Starting the season at the Westminster Invitational
is not an easy thing for the Albertson men’s soccer team to do – considering
the past. The Coyotes have trekked to
Salt Lake City every year since 1996, boasting just a 6-12 in those seven
tournaments. But the tide changed this
year, as Albertson took 2-of-3 matches from high-caliber NAIA opponents,
including victories over two squads ranked in their respective NAIA regional
polls.
SOUTHWARD EARNS HONOR: How the Coyotes won – that was a team effort. But striker Jason Southward (Hailey,
Idaho / Wood River HS) did his best to help out, earning Cascade Conference
and NAIA Region I Player-of-the-Week honors for his endeavors at the
tournament. The junior, who sat out the
season opener against Point Loma Nazarene (red card suspension from the 2002
season), scored two goals in each of the two ‘Yote wins, to go along with an
assist. It was the third time in his
career that Southward has been honored – along with moving into fifth-place in
school history for goals scored with 28.
REGIONAL RANKING: With the 2-1 mark, Albertson vaulted into the
NAIA Region I top-five poll in the No. 3 slot.
Regional No. 1 Simon Fraser is ranked 21st in the NAIA
national poll, while No. 2 Concordia was in the “others receiving votes”
category. Rounding out the top-five
were Evergreen and Western Baptist.
BIG WIN OVER WESTMINSTER: The big victory for Albertson over the weekend was
a 4-1 smash of then regional No. 3 Westminster College. The victory was sweet revenge for a 4-0
blanking the Griffins pinned on the ‘Yotes last season. After falling behind 1-0 in the 19th
minute, the Coyotes quickly responded, as Jason Southward followed up a John
Reinschmidt (Mountain Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS) blast off the
right post, with a flick past the keeper to tie the score. Albertson would put the game away in the
second half, thanks to Joe Chandler (Nampa, Idaho / Univ. of Utah). Playing in his first intercollegiate game in
five years, Chandler made a nifty run down the field, and launched the go-ahead
goal into the “Upper V” – giving the ‘Yotes the lead for good. The sophomore would add a second goal, as
would Southward, and the defense would stand firm in the win.
HURRICANE UTAH: Talk on the East Coast is of pending Hurricane
Isabel. Last Friday, “Hurricane Utah”
blasted through the Salt Lake plain with winds upwards of 40 m.p.h. during the
Coyotes match with Bellevue (Neb.).
Albertson would take a 4-0 lead in the match, before giving up three of
their own in the second half – with every goal scored with the wind at a teams
back. All-in-all, Albertson would
kindly take the 4-3 win. Southward
would tally two goals, with Brad Brooks (Meridian, Idaho / Meridian
HS) and Brad Thornburg (Yreka, Calif. / Yreka HS) adding
scores of their own.
WELCOME BACK: It was a nice welcome for both Brooks and
Thornburg, who had interesting 2002 campaigns.
Brooks tore the ACL in one of his knees at this same tournament last
year and was on the IR, while Thornburg redshirted, concentrating on his
degree. Nonetheless, for both to get into
the scoring column made a capper of a great weekend.
TOUGH LUCK IN OPENER: Without Southward in the opener against Point
Loma Nazarene, the Coyotes struggled with an attack, losing 1-0. The lone goal was scored by the Sea Lions midway
through the second half, a play that coach John Calpin thought was
clearly offside. However, the loss did
not take away the job sweeper Drake Jakovac (Boise, Idaho /
Timberline HS) and his colleagues in the back did.
“HUBEY” NO LONGER A ROOKIE: Lost in the big weekend was the debut of keeper Ryan
Huber (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS).
Not since Ryan Masingill was between the posts in the playoffs against
Simon Fraser in 1999 has someone named other than Jake Steele been in the
Coyote goal. The sophomore had a solid
weekend – a 1.67 GAA (actually below Steele’s 1.77 GAA from 2002) and 24 saves
on 33 shots.
CONFERENCE PLAY ALREADY: Just like that, the preseason is over, as the
Coyotes jump right into the Cascade Conference fracas. Up first is Cascade, who has been a
thorn in the side of Albertson at times since 2000. The Thunderbirds (0-3, 0-1 CCC) have been in disarray –
considering their entire athletic department was revamped over the summer. New coach Micah Saxman, who was a player for
Cascade last year, has seen his team struggle with an attack, as they have been
outscored 13-0 in three matches (against Pacific, Linfield, Concordia). Albertson has won two in a row against the
T-Birds and holds a 17-4 all-time advantage.
Saturday’s second battle in Portland is for regional supremacy, as the
Coyotes meet Concordia. The
Cavaliers (4-5, 1-0 CCC) have had a difficult preseason with games against
upper echelon teams in the NAIA – but that is how coach Dan Birkey likes
it. Freshman Joey Graham leads the team
with six goals in the nine matches the Cavs have played, but the team lost
keeper Jason Talley for the season on Sunday with a broken leg. The two squads split the series last year,
with Albertson holding a 14-13-1 advantage in the 28 previous meetings.
TOP COACHES COLLIDE: It is always interesting when John Calpin and Dan
Birkey meet on the pitch. Not only are
they the longest tenured coaches in the league, but they both have impressive
resumes. Both have coaches in the
professional game – Calpin in the NASL with the L.A. Aztecs, Birkey in the
Premier League of the Caribbean.
Combined, the two have won a staggering 393 games as NAIA coaches
(Birkey with 203, Calpin 190).

MORE INFORMATION ON THE
COYOTES: For game stories, statistics,
and information regarding the Albertson men’s soccer program, head to the official
site Coyote Soccer: www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/menssoccer.htm. Each night, scores and updated standings are
posted on the Conference Standings page within the Albertson men’s soccer website
at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/msoccer/stats/standings.htm.
WOMEN’S SOCCER (2-1, 1-0 CCC): Lady ‘Yotes continue five-game homestand with
matches against OIT and Southern
LAST WEEK: defeated Eastern Oregon, 3-2.
COMING UP: vs. Oregon Tech, Friday, 4 p.m.; vs. Southern
Oregon, Saturday, 1 p.m.
GOTTA LOVE PLAYING AT HOME: The Symms Field soccer pitch has been a great home
field advantage for the Albertson women’s soccer team over the past year. In the last ten matches that the Lady ‘Yotes
have played at home – the squad has a 7-3 record, with the only losses coming
to regionally ranked opponents. In
fact, since 2001 – Albertson owns a 9-7-1 mark at home.
BIG WIN OVER EASTERN: A two week layoff is not something an improving
team likes to see early in the season, but that is what the Coyotes faced,
coming into Saturday’s Cascade Conference opener against Eastern Oregon. Albertson fell behind on a pair of
occasions, but made plays when it counted in a 3-2 victory over the
Mountaineers. Eastern took one-goal
leads at 1-0 and 2-1, but the Lady ‘Yotes came back. Albertson knotted the score a one in the first half, when Alyssa
Latham (Walla Walla, Wash. / Walla Walla CC) ripped a shot home
following a combination from senior Katie Rupert (Boise, Idaho /
North Idaho CC) and Andrea Ebert (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS). After Eastern scored five minutes into the
second half, Ebert took a cross from Latham – after a nice long ball from Kristi
Dalsoglio (Boise, Idaho / Meridian HS) and volleyed the ball into
the net. Albertson would score the
winner in the 69th minute when Latham would give Adria Carley (Emmett,
Idaho / Emmett HS) a feed well outside the box and the junior would loop
the ball into the net to give the ‘Yotes the lead for good. With the victory, Albertson improved to
9-0-1 all-time against Eastern.
NEWCOMERS SHINE: It was a nice home-opener for a few of the new
players to the program. Freshman Allison
Rupert (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) and senior Shaila Goodman (La
Crescenta, Calif. / Boise State) each were in the starting line-up and had
a factor in the outcome. Two others – Tiffany
Mathews (Las Vegas, Nev. / Eldorado HS) and Adele Johnson (Riverton,
Utah / Waterford HS) came off the bench in crucial situations to help the
team.
LATHAM CONTINUES HER MAGIC: With a goal and two assists, Alyssa Latham
continues to be the most prolific scorer in Albertson women’s soccer
history. The senior has now scored 13
goals and assisted on 24 others in just 24 matches in the purple and gold. The 2.08 points per match is well above
Becky Robertson’s school record of 1.76 points per match in her two seasons at
Albertson. Latham, who already holds
the school record for assists in a season and career, ranks third in all-time
points (1. Kristine Halter – 80, 2. Robertson – 65) and fifth in all-time goals
(1. Halter – 30, 2. Robertson – 27, 3. Kathleen Marron – 17, 4. Amy Wells –
15).
REGIONAL RANKINGS: Albertson continues to be on the outside looking
in at the NAIA Region I top-five rankings.
Three Cascade Conference and two NAIA independents comprise the
grouping. Leading the pack is unbeaten
Concordia, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA national poll. Simon Fraser ranks No. 2, sitting at No. 11 in the latest
national poll. Rounding out the group
is Western Baptist, who was in the “others receiving votes” category in the
national poll, Evergreen, and Carroll (Mont.).
CLOSING IN ON HISTORY: Head coach Aisha Reed is just in her second
season with the Lady ‘Yotes, but she is nearing a milestone in her career. The former Coyote and Arizona State
University standout sits just three wins shy of becoming the all-time
winningest coach in Albertson women’s soccer history. With the win over Eastern, Reed past Hiro Wantanabe for
third-place on the list with 12 wins.
Kristine (Halter) Jones notched 13 wins from 1995-98, while John Calpin
won 14 matches in the first two season of the program’s existence in 1989 and
1990.
AROUND THE CONFERENCE: Concordia continues to mow down opponents, as the
Cavs have not given up a goal in six matches this season (outscoring opponents
17-0), while Cascade has went the opposite direction – failing to score in four
matches (being outscored by opponents 36-0).
Evergreen has completed a brutal preseason slate – including matches
against NAIA power Simon Fraser, NCAA Division II stalwarts Seattle and Central
Washington, and improving Pacific Lutheran squad. Western Baptist rebounded from a four-match winless streak to top
Southern Oregon in both team’s CCC opener, while Warner Pacific found the
victory column for the first time with a lopsided win over Cascade.
TECH AND SOUTHERN IN TOWN: As the two southern outposts of the Cascade
Conference head to Caldwell this season for cross-over match-ups in the league,
the two visiting schools hope history is not on their side. Oregon Tech has had a nice start to
the season, including a three-game win streak against California Pacific
Conference teams. The Owls (3-3, 0-1)
are led by striker Dena Young, who has tallied seven goals in the three OIT
wins. Albertson and Tech are deadlocked
in the all-time series at 2-2-2, but the Coyotes hold a 2-1 advantage at Symms
Field. Struggling Southern Oregon is
hoping that things will improve on their current seven-game road trip. The Raiders (1-5, 0-1) have tied a
school-record by losing five matches in a row since a season opening 13-0 win
over Mills College – however, they have played Western Baptist (1-0) and Simon
Fraser (4-0) tough. Southern has never
defeated Albertson in Caldwell – including a tough 3-2 loss to the Coyotes last
season. The season series is tied 3-3.

LAST WEEK:
lost to No. 12 Southern Oregon, 3-1; lost to
Oregon Tech, 3-2.
COMING
UP: at Concordia, Friday, 7 p.m. (PDT); at
Western Baptist, Saturday, 7 p.m. (PDT); exhibition vs. Southern Idaho,
Tuesday, 7 p.m.
STYMIED
AT HOME: Over the past nine
seasons, the J.A. Albertson Activities Center has been a safe haven for the
Lady ‘Yote volleyball team, having posted a 70-30 mark (.700 winning
percentage) on their home court.
However, serve was broken this past weekend, as both Southern Oregon and
Oregon Tech took Albertson down. With
the losses, the Coyotes sit a full five games out of first-place, and it is
just the third week of the season – giving the squad plenty of time to rebound.
RALLY
AGAINST TECH NOT ENOUGH: It didn’t look
good early for the ‘Yotes against Oregon Tech, a team that had never won a
match in Caldwell. With a hitting
percentage below ten percent, Albertson struggled mightily. However, head coach Liz Mendiola must have said something during the ten minute “Coyote
Chaos” promotional break, as the team came on like gangbusters to take the
third and fourth game, before succumbing 15-13 in the fifth. Amanda
Basañez (Elko, Nev. / College of
So. Idaho) rapped out 11 of her
career-high 19 kills in the two game wins for the Coyotes, including a perfect
7-of-7 swings in Game 3. Kristen Bailey (Fountain Green, Utah / Snow CC) recorded a career-high 18 kills as well.
TRIPLE-DOUBLE
MACHINE: Basañez lost the Cascade
Conference and NAIA Region I Setter-of-the-Week voting to OIT freshman Megan
Albertson, but the senior put up gargantuan numbers. A pair of triple-doubles (kills-assists-digs) helped her cause,
with the 19 kill, 34 assist, 16 dig night against Oregon Tech the high
point. Furthering her cause was a
week-long attack percentage around the 30-percent mark.
LOOKED
GOOD FOR A WHILE VS. SOUTHERN:
Paul Elliott and his Southern Oregon volleyball team has had the Coyotes number
for over a decade. His No. 12 ranked
Raiders overcame a slow start to top Albertson in four games on Friday night,
extending their domination to 32 wins in 36 games. Brittany
Bonnett (Logandale, Nev. / Dixie
State CC) had 16 kills and 14 digs
for the ‘Yotes, with Ashlea
Thornton (Glendora, Calif. / Cal
Baptist) chipping in 11 kills and
23 digs.
NO
MORE MATCHETT: She is finally a senior –
thankfully. Southern All-American
Kristina Matchett continued her career-long victimization of the Coyotes again
on Friday, rapping out 25 kills in the win.
For her career against Albertson – which has spanned 11 matches,
Matchett has accumulated 221 kills, a .398 attack percentage, and nearly six spikes
a game – against the Coyotes alone (special thanks to Rich Rosenthal, SOU SID).
BAILEY
TIES SCHOOL RECORD: Overshadowed in the loss
to Southern was an outstanding individual performance by Coyote middle Kristen
Bailey. The senior tied a school record
with 11 total blocks (four solo, seven assisted), equaling the mark Farrah
Keanaaina recorded on Oct. 9, 1998 against Concordia. For the season, Bailey ranks second in the loop in blocks,
averaging just under 1.3 per game.
HARTMAN
HAS CAREER NIGHT: Another player with a
great night against Southern Oregon was sophomore Fran Hartman (Lakeview, Ore.
/ Lakeview HS). Hartman set a new career-high with 14 kills
in the four-game match, to go along with three blocks – with a .429 attack
percentage.
REGIONAL
RANKINGS: With the 1-4 start to
the season, Albertson is not among the teams ranked in the NAIA Region I weekly
top-ten poll. However, unlike the other
13 regions in the nation, only six teams were listed by the Region I chair. Nonetheless, Southern Oregon continues to
lead the group – ranked No. 12 in the nation.
A trio of Frontier Conference schools, Carroll and Montana Tech (ranked
No. 19 and No. 24 respectively in the nation), and Lewis-Clark State (in the
“others receiving votes category) were No. 2-4, with Oregon Tech and Northwest
rounding out the list.
WILLAMETTE
VALLEY, HERE WE COME: The tough
portion of the early season continues this weekend, as the Lady ‘Yotes head for
the first of two trips to the Willamette Valley – this time for encounters with
Concordia and Western
Baptist. The
Cavaliers (4-7, 3-1 CCC) are the four-time defending regular-season champions,
but saw a conference record 66-match CCC win streak end against Northwest two
weeks ago. However, Chris Duenow’s team
is one to be reckoned with, as Melissa Rowe and Amy Nevills return with
National Tournament experience.
Albertson has not defeated Concordia in their last nine encounters –
dating back to the 1999 season, with the Cavs holding a 15-12 all-time
edge. Saturday, it’s off to Salem to
meet the surging Warriors (7-5, 3-1), who are hitting full stride after a rash
of preseason injuries. All-Region
hitter Liz Howe is as potent of an attack as anyone in the league, with a
healthy Kendra Mitchell bolstering the attack.
Western has dropped three-in-a-row against Albertson, and trail the
all-time series 14-9.
RAFFLE
FOR QUILT: The Coyote volleyball
team is holding a raffle for an 86-square inch quilt to be drawn on May 9,
2004. The original design “Crown
Jubilee” will be present at all home matches and is valued at over $800. Tickets are just one dollar each, or six
tickets for five dollars – and can be purchased at all home volleyball matches,
or by calling coach Liz Mendiola at 459-5858.
