in the tournament is going fast - so for more information, to secure a group in
this year's event, or become a sponsor, contact Dave Hahn at 459-5835.
THINK AHEAD FOR LAS VEGAS?: This year, the Albertson men's basketball team will be playing two games in Las Vegas on November 7 and 8. Airfare and hotel packages are available through Caldwell Travel at 459-3602. A three-day, two-night package at The Orleans Hotel and Casino with round-trip airfair is $421 for a single person or $621 for a couple.
SOFTBALL STEAK AND CRAB FEED: The Albertson softball team will
be holding a Steak and Crab feed on Saturday, November 1, at the Boise Police
Clubhouse. Tickets for the event and auction are $25 and can be purchased
from a Coyote softball player or by calling head coach Kelly Gibbons at
459-5113.
GOLF SEASON OPENS THURSDAY: The Albertson men’s and women’s
golf teams open up the 2003 fall season with a Thursday dual against Northwest
Nazarene at River Bend Golf Course. The
Coyote men return Travis Gibbens, their top player from last season,
while the ladies return both Roslyn Folk and Sarah Gallant – a
duo who placed in the top-50 at the NAIA Championships last spring.
BASEBALL TO FACE ALUMNI ON
SATURDAY: Fans
first chance to see the 2004 Albertson baseball team in action will be this
Saturday when “Fall Ball” season opens up with the annual Alumni game. The Alumni vs. the Coyotes will take place
at Simplot Stadium in Caldwell at Noon.
LAST
WEEK: won at Cascade, 4-0; lost at Concordia, 5-2.
COMING
UP: at Cascade, Friday, 4 p.m. (PDT); at
Concordia, Saturday, 1 p.m.
135 MINUTES OF SOLID SOCCER: The first foray into Cascade Conference play for
the Albertson men’s soccer team was blessed with 135 minutes of near-perfect
play, and a horrific 45 minute stretch that wrecked havoc on not only head
coach John Calpin, but the team itself.
The ‘Yotes dominated Cascade in the league opener, 4-0, holding the
advantage from whistle to whistle. It
was a bit different on Saturday at Concordia, holding a 1-0 lead for the first
30-plus minutes, only to watch the Cavaliers score four times in the second
half to take the key CCC win.
COYOTES DOMINATE PLAY AT
CASCADE: Although the final score
indicates a blow-out with a 4-0 margin, the game on the field between Albertson
and Cascade last Friday was much different.
Despite holding a 26-1 shot advantage on the afternoon, the ‘Yotes were
only able to muster a Brad Thornburg (Yreka, Calif. / Yreka HS) header
off a Ryan Abo (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) corner kick in the
first 60 minutes off action. Things
turned around in a hurry when the T-Birds saw a player ejected for his second
yellow-card – prompting a flurry of action in a ten minute span of the second
half. John Reinschmidt (Mountain
Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS) followed up a Joe Chandler (Nampa,
Idaho / University of Utah) blast off the post for his second goal of the
year in the 70th minute. Two
minutes later, Chandler found the net off a feed from Jason Southward (Hailey,
Idaho / Wood River HS), who then capped the scoring in the 79th
minute off a Thornburg cross.
FIRST SHUTOUT OTHER THAN THE
“STEELE CURTAIN”: In goal for the Coyotes
on Friday was sophomore Ryan Huber (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS), who
did not have to make a save in notching his first career shutout. A staggering statistic for the Coyotes is
the fact that Huber was the first Albertson keeper, other than All-American
Jake Steele, to record a shutout in nearly five years. Another former All-American, Ryan Masingill,
who filled in as a keeper during his freshman season, shutout the same Cascade
squad in Portland on Oct. 23, 1998.
TALE OF TWO HALVES: For the first 45 minutes in the regional battle
between the Coyotes and defending Cascade Conference champion, Concordia,
things looked good. Then the second
half began. Taking advantage of a
poorly executed offsides trap, the Cavaliers scored four goals in the stanza to
pull away from the Coyotes, 5-2.
Albertson got on the board early, as Jason Southward scored an
unassisted goal in the 17th minute.
However, the Cavs rallied to tie the score just before halftime – with
the onslaught beginning early and often in the period.
SOUTHWARD A SCORING MACHINE: So far during the 2003 season, Jason Southward has
tallied either a goal or an assist in each of the first four matches that he
has played in. This is no strange
coincidence for the 6-5 striker, as Southward has recorded a point in 15 of his
last 18 matches dating back to last season, and 18 of his last 23 matches
dating back to 2001. For his career,
Southward has knocked home 30 goals and assisted on 16 others.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: The Coyotes chance to jump in the NAIA Region I
top-five poll and a possibility to find themselves in the NAIA Top-25 vanished
with the loss at Concordia. However,
the top three spots in the region remained the same, as Simon Fraser,
Concordia, and Albertson kept hold of the 1-2-3 spots. Jumping back into the regional poll at No. 4
was Westminster, who won lopsided home matches against Cal Baptist and Menlo,
and Warner Pacific debuted at No. 5, after weekend wins at Northwest and
Evergreen.
CONFERENCE STATISTICS: Three Coyotes find themselves among the top-ten in
Cascade Conference statistics heading into play this weekend. Joe Chandler leads the Cascade Conference
with five assists in five games, while Jason Southward is right behind the
sophomore with four dishes. Southward
ranks second in points per game and third in shots per game, while Chandler is
fifth and sixth respectively in the same categories. Keeper Ryan Huber is sixth in the CCC in goals against average.
CRUCIAL WEEKEND OF PLAY: Believe it or not, Albertson comes into their
first home matches of the season sitting in fifth-place in the seven-team
Cascade Conference. One of the team’s
directly above the Coyotes is Evergreen, who stunned the ‘Yotes in
Caldwell last season, 2-1. One of the
many improved teams in the conference, the Geoducks (3-4-1, 1-1-1 CCC) have
been on the offensive this season, averaging nearly four goals per game –
including an 11-1 conference rout of Northwest on Tuesday. Junior college transfer Joe Gjertsen (14
goals, 5 assists) has been a big asset to head coach Tom Boatright’s club, as
Cascade College transfer, Chris Langford (3 goals, 2 assists), a former All-CCC
player. It is the 12th
meeting between the schools since 1986, with Albertson leading the all-time
series, 8-2-1. Saturday, winless Northwest
makes its yearly appearance at Symms Field. The Eagles (0-7, 0-3) have struggled this season under new head
coach Gary McIntosh – having been outscored 54-5 in their first seven
contests. Northwest is led by Anthony
Ricciardelli (2 goals) and keeper J.J. Geise – a three-year starter. Albertson has won the past seven meetings
between the teams and leads the all-time series, 14-2.

website at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/msoccer/stats/standings.htm.
LAST
WEEK: lost at Concordia, 3-1; won at Western
Baptist, 3-1.
COMING
UP: vs. Evergreen, Friday, 7 p.m.; vs. Northwest,
Saturday, 7 p.m.
COYOTES
GAIN KEY ROAD SPLIT IN WILLAMETTE VALLEY: After tough setbacks to Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech at home, the
Albertson volleyballers were in search of their first Cascade Conference
victory of the season in the Willamette Valley, and win they did. After dropping a four-gamer to Concordia on
Friday night, the ladies faced adversity against a very strong Western Baptist
team, and knocked off the Warriors for the fourth consecutive time, 3-1.
WILD
CONFERENCE RACE: With the win, Albertson
pulls itself out of the CCC cellar – considering three other teams (Eastern
Oregon, Warner Pacific, Cascade) have failed to win a loop contest. On the other side, no less than six teams
are above .500 in the league standings, including three teams within one game
of front-running Southern Oregon.
Things should shake out a bit this weekend – as Northwest and Evergreen
head east, while Concordia and Western Baptist head south to take on Southern
and OIT.
REGIONAL
RANKINGS: Nearly a full slate of
ten teams were selected in the third installment of the NAIA Region I poll,
conducted every Monday. Nine teams –
five from the CCC and four from the Frontier Conference make up the
grouping. Southern Oregon, ranked No.
11 in this week’s national poll, sits atop the poll, with Carroll (No. 20) and
Montana Tech (No. 23) following.
Lewis-Clark State (other’s receiving votes) is No. 4, followed by Oregon
Tech, Northwest, Concordia, Western Baptist, and Rocky Mountain.
BIG
WIN OVER WESTERN: Confidence was built in
stages for the Lady ‘Yotes this fall, considering the lack of a patsy on their
preseason slate. It came to full
fruition on Saturday night in the crucial victory at Western Baptist, a squad
who had won six of its last seven matches.
No one player stood out for the ‘Yotes – it truly was a team effort,
considering five different players recorded at least 10 kills and five
different players recorded at least 10 digs.
Albertson swung its way to 31-29 and 30-19 wins in the first two games,
but saw the Warriors rally to take Game 3.
The finale saw the Coyotes rally from a 23-22 deficit to salt away the
win on consecutive blocks from Fran
Hartman (Lakeview, Ore. /
Lakeview HS) and Kristen Bailey (Fountain Green, Utah / Snow CC). The
sophomore Hartman registered ten kills and four blocks, with the senior Bailey
recording 12 kills and eight blocks in the win. Brittany
Bonnett (Logandale, Nev. / Dixie
State CC) recorded ten kills and
11 assists, senior libero Amber
Igoe (Blackfoot, Idaho /
Firth HS) bumped 15 balls, while
true freshman Tiffany
Sower (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle
HS) came off the bench to pump in 11 kills and
ten digs.
“THE
DIG”: The key point in the Western Baptist match
took place in Game 4 with the Warriors pressed to take the match to a decisive
fifth game. Trailing 23-22, Western had
the set to All-Region hitter Liz Howe, who pounded a ball – but to the Warriors
chagrin (the team had already begun celebrating the spike), freshman Erin Cherrington (Granby, Colo. / Middle Fork HS) dug the ball cleanly, with the Tachikara finding its
way over the net, landing softly on the Western side of the net for a
kill. Cherrington led the ‘Yotes with
26 assists to go along with ten digs.
JUST
CALL THE SETTER/HITTER “SLASH”: For the fourth time this season, senior “slash” Amanda Basañez (Elko, Nev. / College of Southern Idaho) recorded a triple-double. Basañez, who splits her time between a setter and an outside
hitter in the Coyotes 6-2 rotation, led the team with 13 kills, to go along
with 23 assists, and 11 digs in the win over Western.
HOW
RARE IS THE TRIPLE-DOUBLE?: It
takes the correct rotation, along with some luck for a volleyball player to
record a triple-double – which Amanda Basañez has done on four
occasions this season. But it has been
a rarity for a Coyote player to achieve the statistical honor – which makes
Basañez’s feat that more impressive.
Since the 2000 season, a triple-double has been reached on just two
occasions – former All-American Carly Merkel recorded 11 kills, 43 assists, and
ten digs against Eastern Oregon on Oct. 31, 2000 and recorded ten kills, 53
assists, and 11 digs in a win over California Baptist on Sept. 1, 2001.
NO
BREAKS AT CONCORDIA: The house of horrors
that is the Concordia volleyball team continued their firm grip on the Lady
‘Yotes on Friday night, as Albertson dropped a four-game match to the four-time
defending league champs. The Coyotes
managed to hit only .197 percent for the game, including an .091 clip in Game
4, as the Cavs won for the tenth straight time over Albertson. Fran Hartman and Kristen Bailey led the way
with 12 kills apiece.
INSIDE
THE CONFERENCE NUMBERS: Five different
Albertson players rank among the top-ten in individual statistical categories
following play last weekend (numbers skewed a bit due to the fact that 12
matches during the first month of the season have not been reported). Middle blocker Kristen Bailey finds herself
ranked second in the league in blocks per game (1.23) and No. 7 in attack
percentage (.286). Tiffany Sower is
also sitting at No. 2 in the CCC with her 15 aces (0.75 per game played), while
Amber Igoe ranks tenth in the loop in digs per game (2.89). Finally, both Coyote setters – Amanda
Basañez (6.20) and Erin Cherrington (5.77) are eighth and ninth respectively in
assists per game.
NOT
YOUR TYPICAL PUGET SOUND SQUADS: In
the past, this weekend’s arrival of the two Cascade Conference outposts from
the Puget Sound region of Washington would be blips on the radar for the
Coyotes. Not anymore. Both Evergreen and Northwest are off to their best starts ever – and are hoping a
successful trip east could help their cause in the CCC standings. First off on Friday are the Geoducks (5-5,
3-2), who have won their last three CCC tilts to rise to the .500 mark for the
first time in program history.
Evergreen – led by sophomore middle Kristin Bartley (3.92 kills/game) –
defeated Albertson in five games last season in Olympia, Wash., which was their
biggest win in their short history of women’s volleyball. Bill Lash’s team should have plenty of
support – considering both Geoduck soccer teams are meeting the Coyotes earlier
in the afternoon. Albertson holds a 3-1
all-time advantage over the Clams.
Saturday, the Lady ‘Yotes have some revenge on their mind as the Eagles
(7-5, 4-1) eliminated Albertson from the CCC Tournament last November. Northwest coach Shaun Kupferberg has his
squad playing very well – leading the loop in kills, assists, and aces. Setter Jessie Buck (11.2 apg) has won CCC
Setter-of-the-Week honors in two of first three weeks of the season, passing
balls to outsides Lisa Langmade (3.87 kpg) and Emily Marquez (3.00 kpg), who
have also won weekly awards. Northwest
ended a ten-match Coyote win streak last season, but trails the all-time
series, 12-2.
RAFFLE
FOR QUILT: The Coyote volleyball team
is holding a raffle for an 86-square inch quilt to be drawn on May 9,
2004. The original design “Crown
Jubilee” will be present at all home matches and is valued at over $800. Tickets are just one dollar each, or six
tickets for five dollars – and can be purchased at all home volleyball matches,
or by calling coach Liz Mendiola at 459-5858.

at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/vball/stats/standings.htm.
WOMEN’S SOCCER (3-2, 2-1 CCC): Lady ‘Yotes end five-game homestand with games vs.
Evergreen and Concordia
LAST WEEK: defeated Oregon Tech, 4-2; lost to Southern Oregon,
5-1.
COMING UP: vs. Evergreen, Friday, 2 p.m.; vs. Concordia,
Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
COYOTES EARN SPLIT AT HOME: Perfect
late summer weather greeted the Albertson women’s soccer team for Games 2 and 3
of a five-game homestand that makes up the majority of their season on the
Symms Field pitch. The Lady ‘Yotes used
a late first half rally to knock off Oregon Tech on Friday afternoon, but used
a myriad of mistakes on Saturday to drop their tilt against Southern
Oregon. Albertson is now 2-1 on its
home field this year, 8-4 dating back to last season.
GROUP EFFORT IN WIN OVER TECH: Things did not look good for the Coyotes early
Friday afternoon against Oregon Tech, as the Owls utilized a quick
counter-attack to put a crooked number on the board just 69 seconds into the
match. However, a late first-half
barrage lifted Albertson to an important 4-2 Cascade Conference
cross-divisional match-up over the much improved club from Klamath Falls,
Ore. The ‘Yotes tied the score in the
29th minute, as freshman Allison Rupert (Boise, Idaho /
Capital HS) slotted home a ball off a nice combination from junior Adria
Carley (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS) and senior Alyssa Latham (Walla
Walla, Wash. / Walla Walla CC). The
hosts would find the net in the 34th and 45th minutes to
take a 3-1 lead to intermission.
Albertson would cap the scoring in the second half, as fifth-year senior
Kristi Dalsoglio (Boise, Idaho / Meridian HS) scored her first
collegiate goal to add to a first half assist with a flick in the 49th
minute off a Katie Rupert (Boise, Idaho / North Idaho CC) feed.
DEFENSIVE ATTACK: Senior transfer Shaila Goodman (La
Crescenta, Calif. / Boise State) was known for her solid defensive work as
a junior college and NCAA Division I player.
Serving as the ‘Yotes sweeper, she has anchored the Albertson defense –
but got into the offensive fray against Oregon Tech. Pushing forward on a Coyote corner, Goodman watched Alyssa Latham
line a ball to the right side of the box, which Katie Rupert sent her way, and
the defender poked the ball past the OIT keeper for her first Coyote goal. Not only did the score give the ‘Yotes a
two-goal advantage, but sent the team into a frantic celebration.
FOR HER FOLKS: First-year soccer player Tiffany Mathews (Las
Vegas, Nev. / Eldorado HS) has
wowed fans as a two-time All-Cascade Conference softball player. However, she wowed the fans at Symms Field,
including her parents seeing her play collegiate soccer for the first time,
with the go-ahead goal against OIT.
Mathews, in her first start of the season, took a through-ball from Kristi
Dalsoglio in front of the net and tucked the ball into the right corner of the
goal.
SOUTHERN SNEAKS IN FOR
VICTORY: A 3,000 mile road trip and
five consecutive losses had the Southern Oregon women’s soccer team reeling –
but the eastern road trip gave them new hope for the 2003 season. After blanking Eastern Oregon on Friday, the
Raiders came to Caldwell and knocked off the Coyotes, 5-1, recording their
first-ever victory at Symms Field in four tries. After falling behind 2-0, the ‘Yotes scored their only goal of
the game when Katie Rupert redirected an Alyssa Latham direct kick into the
net. However, the visitors scored late
in the first half and tacked on two late second half goals for the win.
WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN?: Head coach Aisha Reed knew her team
squandered opportunities against Southern Oregon. The Raiders took advantage of an off-day by keeper Danielle
Dorsch (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) – chipping two balls past the
sophomore, and gaining a third on a penalty kick after a foul in the box. The ‘Yotes also gave Southern an own goal,
as a ball trying to be cleared was inadvertently kicked into the Albertson net,
and a 2-on-1 breakaway goal in the waning moments of the game. Offensively, the Lady ‘Yotes hit the
crossbar twice, and failed to convert a pair of indirect kicks inside the
Southern box. “The score was not
indicative of how the game was played.
We gave up some goals we shouldn’t have and gave Southern the momentum. When playing at home – momentum is such a
big key.”
NOTE GAME TIMES: This weekend, both the Albertson men and women
will be hosting games at Symms Field, therefore adjusting the start times each
day. Friday, the Lady ‘Yotes will host
Evergreen at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 4 p.m. Saturday, the men’s team will open up play
at 1 p.m., before the Lady ‘Yotes entertain Concordia at 3:30 p.m. Admission to Coyote soccer is $3.00 for
adults and $2.00 for students 12-18 – all Albertson College students, faculty,
and staff are admitted free.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: The NAIA Region I weekly poll once again saw the
same five squads in the identical order as last week – showing the lopsided
power of Northwest soccer. NAIA No. 4
ranked Concordia remained in the top spot, despite dropping its first match of
the season to a very good Linfield club, with No. 13 Simon Fraser maintaining
the second slot. Western Baptist,
ranked No. 3 in the region, has won five matches in a row, while Carroll and
Evergreen round out the group.
TWO TOUGHIES AT HOME: Things get a bunch tougher this weekend for the
Lady ‘Yotes, as “Northern Division” rivals Evergreen and Concordia head
into the Treasure Valley – trying to get an early hold on the two playoff
berths available. Friday, the Geoducks
(1-6, 0-2 CCC) look to end a six-game losing streak that dates back to
August. Coach Arlene McMahon’s club is
much better than their overall record indicates, having played two NCAA
Division II teams (Central Washington and Seattle) and two nationally ranked
teams (Concordia and Simon Fraser) competitively. The “Clams” are led by two-time All-CCC selection Tiffany Fenster
(3 goals) and senior midfielder Brekke Holub (2 assists) – and are still trying
to erase the bad memories of 2002, when the playoff-bound squad had to forfeit
eight wins due to the usage of an ineligible player. It is the 16th meeting between the schools, with
Evergreen holding a 10-5 all-time advantage.
Saturday, Grant Landy’s No. 4 ranked Cavaliers (6-1-1, 2-0) look to
extend their dominance over Albertson for a sixth consecutive season. Not since a 2-2 tie (goals by Samantha
Cockerill and Jennifer Myers) on Oct. 25, 1997 has the Portland school been
denied a victory (Albertson swept the season series in 1996). The Cavs have outscored their opponents 20-2
this season (six shutouts), with opponents averaging just five shots a
match. Malloree Enoch (6 goals) and
Tiffany Holtz (5 goals) led the team in scoring, while Aimee Wright (9 assists)
ranks second in the CCC in assists, while keeper Shelly Butcher (0.28 GAA) is
the best goalie in the league.
Concordia, which advanced to the second-round of the NAIA National
Tournament last year, has won 11 matches in a row over Albertson and holds a
2-12-2 all-time series edge.
