GENERAL
ATHLETICS NEWS:
COYOTE OPEN COMING UP: The annual Coyote Open Golf
Tournament is scheduled for Friday September 26, at River Bend Golf Course in
Wilder. For more information, or to secure a group in this year's event,
contact Dave Hahn at 459-5835.
"CALDWELL COYOTES" OUT
OF THE MONEY IN CANADA: A good experience it was for many of the 2004 Albertson baseballers as
part of the Caldwell Coyote team that participated in the 2003 Grand Forks
International tournament in Canada over the weekend. The Coyotes finished
the tournament 1-2, losing a 9-6 battle with eventual champion Houston, losing
3-0 to the Chinese Taipei National Team, and knocking off Sacramento, 6-4,
behind the right arm of Matt Bergstrom. The 1-2 mark left the team
out of the money round and a chance to earn a portion of the $43,000 in prize
money.
MEN'S SOCCER PREVIEW NEXT WEEK: Look in next week's 'Yote Notes
for a synopsis of the 2003 Albertson men's soccer team and coach John
Calpin's quest for his 200 collegiate win.
THINK AHEAD FOR LAS VEGAS?: This year, the Albertson men's
basketball team will be playing two games in Las Vegas on November 7 and
8. Airfare and hotel packages will be available, along with information
regarding the possible basketball reunion in Las Vegas, by calling Dave Hahn in
the athletic marketing office at 459-5835.
LAST
WEEK: at UM-Western Triangular, Dillon, Mont. –
lost 3-2 to Montana-Western, lost 3-0 to Carroll
COMING
UP: Idle; at Northwest Nazarene, Sept. 9, 7 p.m.;
host Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech, Sept 12-13.
TOUGH
LUCK IN MONTANA: After initial success at
the College of Southern Idaho tournament, the Albertson volleyball team stepped
it up a notch last weekend, taking on the top two teams in the Frontier
Conference at the UM-Western Triangular.
However, the Coyotes found out that life isn’t easy on the road, losing
a tough five-game match to the hosts, then a three-gamer to Carroll, ranked No.
29 in the NAIA.
WHAT
MIGHT HAVE BEEN: Albertson had its
chances in the opener against Montana-Western, taking the first two games 30-18
and 30-21, and led 18-14 in the third game.
However, that is when the middles for the Bulldogs began to take over –
recording just four attack errors over the final three games en route to the
win, taking the Game 5 clincher, 15-8.
After swinging at a .345 clip in the first two games, the Coyotes
recorded 24 errors in the final three, helping their own demise.
SPREADING
THE LOVE AROUND: Despite the loss, head
coach Liz Mendiola was pleased with the balanced attack. Four different players recorded double-digit
kill matches, led by Amanda
Basañez (Elko, Nev. / College of Southern Idaho) with
14. Also in the group was junior Ashlea Thornton (Glendora, Calif. / Cal Baptist) with 12,
and 11 each for Kristen
Bailey (Fountain Green, Utah / Snow CC) and Tiffany Sower (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS). Basañez
was a setting machine as well, passing 37 assists, while digging 13 balls. Amber
Igoe (Blackfoot, Idaho / Firth HS) led the
team with 17 bumps.
RUNNING
OUT OF GAS: Match two of the day was
against Carroll College – and the Coyotes couldn’t muster up the price for high
octane fuel, falling 30-28, 30-21, 30-21 to the Saints. Thornton had a team-high ten kills in the
match, with Bailey chipping in eight.
WEEK
OFF BEFORE NNU: Albertson will see its
players return to classes this week – without having to worry about a
match. However, next week is a busy
one, as the Lady ‘Yotes head Tuesday to Nampa for the first of two meetings
with Northwest Nazarene. Later in the
week, Albertson will open up Cascade Conference play against two of the premier
teams in the loop – national tournament competitor Southern Oregon, and
upstart, Oregon Tech.

MORE INFORMATION ON THE LADY
‘YOTES: For game stories, statistics,
and information regarding the Albertson volleyball program, head to the official
site of Lady ‘Yote volleyball: www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/vball.htm. Each night, scores and updated standings are
posted on the Conference Standings page within the Albertson volleyball website
at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/vball/stats/standings.htm.
WOMEN’S SOCCER (1-1): Coyotes split games at
Ortman Invite, have week off before CCC season begins
LAST WEEK: at Arthur Ortman Invitational, Nampa – lost 3-1
to Northwest Nazarene, defeated Eastern Oregon, 2-1.
COMING UP: Idle this week, vs. Eastern Oregon, Sept. 13, 1
p.m.
COYOTES EARN SPLIT IN NAMPA: The season opening Arthur Ortman Invitational
traditionally has been the kickoff to the Albertson soccer season. 2003 was no different, as the Lady ‘Yotes
played 180 minutes on the pitch against Northwest Nazarene and Eastern Oregon,
earning a weekend split, heading into the start of the Cascade Conference
season on Sept. 13. Temperatures in the
80s made conditioning the biggest test – and Albertson past the first exam,
outplaying both opponents in the final 45 minutes each day.
RUPERT SISTERS TAME EASTERN: Double the fun for parents Mark and Shelly Rupert
this season, as both of their daughters – senior Katie Rupert (Boise,
Idaho / North Idaho CC) and freshman Allison Rupert (Boise, Idaho
/ Capital HS) are members of the Coyotes.
They had to be proud on Saturday, as their younger daughter put
Albertson on the board in a 2-1 win over Eastern on Saturday, flicking home a
feed from Kristi Dalsoglio (Boise, Idaho / Meridian HS) after a
long ball from Alyssa Latham (Walla Walla, Wash. / Walla Walla CC). The frosh helped her sister out later in the
first half, giving her a cross for her second goal in her Coyote career – this
one a game-winner.
MOUNTIES STILL SEARCHING: With the loss to Albertson, Eastern is still
winless in nine meetings with Albertson, including a five match losing
streak. The Mountaineers are 0-8-1
against the ‘Yotes, with the only tie occurring during the 2001 season.
NNU WINS THIS YEAR’S
ENCOUNTER: Timid play on the Coyotes part
and a early barrage of shots helped Northwest Nazarene regain hold of the
traveling trophy in the series, as the Crusaders took Friday’s friendly,
3-1. Three goals – all on shots from
outside the 18 were the key for NNU, which broke a 15-match losing streak with
the victory. Albertson did press the
issue in the second half, outplaying the NCAA Division II squad, but only
managed an Adria Carley (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS) goal on a
botched counter-attack by NNU.
WHERE WAS THE TROPHY?: Speaking of the traveling trophy – where was
it? The Coyotes won the second meeting
of the season with NNU last year, however, the trophy never found its way into
the display case in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center. In fact, the trophy has never left
Montgomery Fieldhouse in Nampa – when the Coyote swept the season series back
in 1996, the trophy did not exist – with NNU winning each game until the
Albertson 4-3 overtime thriller in 2002.
SECOND HALF SHUTOUTS: In each of the first two matches, Albertson has
failed to give up a goal. In fact, the
Coyotes hold a 10-5 shots on goal advantage in the final 45 minutes of
games. Keeper Danielle Dorsch (Boise,
Idaho / Capital HS) has not allowed a goal (other than a penalty kick
against Eastern) in the last 140 minutes of action. The sophomore has faced 39 shots in two games, and turned away
12-of-16 shots on goal.
CONCORDIA THE TEAM TO BEAT: Once again, the Cascade Conference will provide
some interesting notes in women’s soccer this season. With divisional play (Northern Division – Albertson, Concordia,
Eastern, Evergreen; Southern Division – Cascade, Oregon Tech, Southern Oregon,
Warner Pacific, Western Baptist), not every team will play each other
twice. In the North, Concordia is still
the team to beat. The Cavaliers
advanced to the second-round of the NAIA Tournament last year and is ranked No.
4 in the preseason national poll. CU
opened its season with a 0-0 tie against Azusa Pacific – the No. 2 ranked team
in the nation. Evergreen will try and
be a factor in the North, one year after forfeiting nine victories due to the
usage of an ineligible player. The
Geoducks scored a big regional victory with a 2-0 win over Rocky Mountain. In the South, Western Baptist has the edge
in the preseason poll – however, the Warriors did not look impressive in two
wins at the Arno Zoske Tournament. In
fact, Western had to rally for a 2-1 win over George Fox, a middle-of-the-road
team in the Northwest Conference.
Southern Oregon and Warner Pacific will most likely battle for the other
playoff spot down South – the Raiders having advanced to the postseason in each
of their three seasons of intercollegiate soccer.
OFF THIS WEEK: The Coyotes next game is a week from Saturday at
Symms Field against Eastern Oregon. The
team has just 14 matches on the schedule this season – hurt by the lack of CCC
games due to the divisional format.
Unlike teams in the I-5 (Seattle-Portland) corridor, Albertson has a
difficulty scheduling non-conference matches to fill the nine available slots
in the ledger – therefore, the ‘Yotes will play just a 14 game schedule.
