TAILGATE PARTIES: The Albertson College alumni office will be hosting a pair of tailgate parties during the remainder of basketball season.  The first is scheduled on January 22, from 5:30-7 p.m., the second is on February 12, from 5:30-7 p.m. - both in Blatchley Hall.  To RSVP, contact Mary Bitner at 459-5300.

SOFTBALL STEAK AND CRAB FEED: The second-annual Albertson College steak and crab feed will be held on Friday, February 18, tentatively at the Nampa Civic Center.  For more information and tickets on the event, which drew 250 people last year, contact head coach Kelly McDonald at 459-5113.

SWIMMING TO TRAVEL TO FINAL DUAL OF SEASON: The Albertson College swim team will shake off five weeks of rust for their final dual meet of the 2004-05 season on Friday night.  The Coyotes will swim a 12-event short course meet with Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore.  It will be the final time for the ‘Yotes to try and record a provisional qualifying time for the NAIA Championships.

INDOOR TRACK LESS THAN A MONTH AWAY: Albertson College will participate this winter in one indoor track and field meet prior to the outdoor schedule.  The ‘Yotes will take part in the United Heritage Invitational in Nampa at the Jackson’s Indoor Track.  If a runner meets a provisional qualifying standard, they would compete at the NAIA Indoor Championships in Johnson City, Tenn., March 3-5.

ALPINE SKIING:

COMING UP: Northwest Conference Qualifier #1, January 22-23, Willamette Pass, Ore.

‘YOTES LOOK TO DEFEND NORTHWEST CONFERENCE TITLE: Now that there is snow in the mountains, the Albertson College alpine ski teams can adjust from training at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center to the slopes, in preparation for their first Northwest Conference Qualifier, next weekend.  The Coyote men and women are defending Northwest Conference champions – and each return the nucleus of their teams that had outstanding finishes at the USCSA National Championships.

WOMEN’S OUTLOOK: The Lady ‘Yotes are coming off their best performance at Nationals in over a decade, placing second in the slalom event and fourth in the combined.  Two-time All-American Cassie Marcial anchors the deep team, along with returning All-Conference pick, Molly Bullard.

MEN’S OUTLOOK: Seven new recruits add to an already deep Coyote squad that lost just one skier to graduation.  All-Conference selections Matt Sylvester and Justin Rackley, who each had Top-30 finishes at Nationals, are the most experienced of the group.

COYOTES TO HOST REGIONAL AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: Albertson College will be the mecca of college skiing later this winter, as the ‘Yotes host the 2005 Western Region Championships at Bogus Basin from Feb. 24-26.  Not to be outdone, the Coyotes will also be the host of the 2005 USCSA National Championships, to be held at Brundage Mountain from March 9-12.

SNOW REPORT: Great conditions await skiers at the Coyotes training grounds.  Bogus Basin reports one inch of new snow, with a 38-inch base and 61 inches at the summit.  Brundage Mountain reports one inch of new snow, with a 43-inch base and 66 inches at the summit.

COYOTES RANKED NO. 7 IN THIRD NAIA POLL: For the 13th consecutive NAIA Division II national poll, the Albertson College men’s basketball team has been ranked in the top-ten – as the ‘Yotes were ranked No. 7 in the third ranking, released last Tuesday.  The Coyotes began the season ranked No. 21, then jumped to No. 8 for the first two regular-season polls, before the climb last week.  Albertson spent the entire 2003-04 season in the top-ten, including three weeks at No. 3.  Also in the poll is unanimous No. 1 and unbeaten Western Baptist, and No. 14 Oregon Tech – however, both teams are expected to drop do to losses over the weekend.  The ‘Yotes may rise again in the poll – as No. 1 Western, No. 3 Cedarville (Ohio), and No. 5 Huntington (Ind.) all lost.

HOME HAS BEEN NICE TO THE ‘YOTES: A home court advantage has been key to the success of the Coyotes over nearly the last quarter century.  From the days at O’Connor Fieldhouse to the spacious Activities Center – wins by opponents have come few and far between – including a perfect 5-0 start to the 2004-05 season and current 13-game win streak.  Since the on-campus gymnasium was opened in the Fall of 1991, the ‘Yotes have compiled a 156-30 mark at home, a gaudy .839 win percentage – with an 86-16 mark in Cascade Conference play (.843 win percentage).  Under Mark Owen, the Coyotes are 49-10 at home (.831 percent) and have won 33-of-39 CCC games.  Only once in the last 23 years have the ‘Yotes lost more than three games at home.

MORE ON THE HOME COOKIN’: Dating back to the 1982-83 season, Albertson has an almost unfathomable 273-39 record at home (.875 win percentage) – including a 56-game home win streak from March 5, 1983 to Dec. 19, 1987.

COYOTES CLAIM I-84 CUP: A crowd of 1,100 fans witness the first “I-84 Cup” meeting between the Albertson and Eastern Oregon men’s basketball teams – with the homestanding Coyotes blasting their rivals, 87-67.  E.J. Costello (Pleasanton, Calif. / Chabot CC) knocked down a season-high six three-pointers as part of a 20-point night in the rout.  The ‘Yotes jumped out to an early 13-2 lead, scoring 28 points off Mountaineer turnovers in the first half, as Albertson built a 24-point edge in the opening period.  Following the game, the hosts received the I-84 Cup, a golden traveling trophy which will be on the line again Feb. 4 in La Grande.

BIG FIRST HALF: Albertson scored a season-high 52 points in the first half against Eastern, eclipsing the mark of 45 points in their win over Montana-Western.  It was the most points scored by the ‘Yotes in a half since Feb. 20 of last year, when Albertson scored 53 points in the first half of a 91-72 victory over Concordia.

FRIED DOUBLE TROUBLE: Post Rich Fried (Middleton, Idaho / Boise State) continued his torrid play, recording his fourth double-double in his last six outings with a 16-point, 12-rebound evening against Eastern Oregon.  During the six-game stretch, the senior is averaging 16 points and nine rebounds per game – along with four blocked shots per game.  Fried ranks fourth in the Cascade Conference and tenth in the NAIA  in field goal percentage (.607), while ranking second in the CCC and 12th in the nation in blocked shots (30).  The 30 blocks rank him tied for ninth on the Albertson single-season swat list – on pace to break the mark of 76 set by B.J. Humphreys in 1999.

GREEN SETS CAREER HIGH: A pair of firsts occurred for the ‘Yotes record-setting point-guard, Joe Green (Pocatello, Idaho / BYU-Idaho), in the Friday win over Eastern Oregon.  The senior registered his first-ever double-double, setting a career-high with 11 assists, while equaling a season-high with 12 points.  It was the fourth time in his career that Green recorded double-digit assists and upped his season total to 88 (5.8 per game, No. 2 in the CCC).  He also moved into No. 2 on the all-time assist list, becoming the second player to record 400 assists in a career.  Green also had seven steals, the eighth time this season that he has recorded five-or-more steals in a game (upping his school-record steals total to 256).

MORE ON GREEN: Joe Green currently leads the Cascade Conference and the NAIA in steals per game (4.4) and ranks second in the loop and 12th in the nation in assists per game.  He also leads the nation for the second consecutive season in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.38), while ranking seventh in the CCC in three-point percentage (.465).

BROWN HAVING SOLID YEAR: Guard Derek Brown (Las Vegas, Nev. / Desert Pines HS) is quietly putting together a stellar 2004-05 campaign. The junior ranks second on the squad, averaging 13 points a night, while ranking third in the league with 2.1 steals per game and seventh with 3.9 assists per game.  Brown also has hit .778 percent of his free throws, No. 7 in the CCC, .554 percent of his field goals – eighth best in the loop, while connecting on over 40-percent of his three-point attempts.  He holds the Coyotes high-scoring game of the season – a 29 point effort in the season opener against Northwest Nazarene.

GOING DEFENSIVE AT THE ACTIVITIES CENTER: A key to the 5-0 start at home for the Coyotes this season has been stellar defensive play.  In the five games at home, Albertson opponents are averaging just 62 points per game, while the hosts have averaged 79 points per contests.  Visitors have converted on just 112-of-297 field goal attempts (.377 percent) – making just 33-percent of their three-point field goals.

HOMESTAND CONCLUDES VS. CONCORDIA: The four-game homestand comes to a close on Tuesday, as Concordia makes a return visit to Caldwell.  The Cavaliers (7-9, 1-4 CCC) had lost 4-of-5 before winning on the road at Evergreen (86-82) on Saturday night.  Concordia made a trip to Idaho in November to take part in the Golden Rule Shoot-Out, dropping games to Willamette and Westminster.  They are led by Brandon Erlandson (17.2 ppg, 6.9 rpg), who scored 35 points in a loss at Western Baptist.  The Cavs also get production from wing Alex Hartman (11.5 ppg) and point-guard Michael Lay (9.3 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 4.2 apg).  It is the 45th meeting between the clubs, with Albertson holding a 36-8 edge, including victories in four-straight.

TOUGH WEEKEND TRIP TO THE SOUTHLAND: The most dreaded of trips for teams in the Cascade Conference awaits the ‘Yotes this weekend, as Albertson makes the winding trip to Oregon Tech on Friday night.  The No. 14 ranked Owls (14-6, 4-2), the defending NAIA Division II champions, had a six-game win streak snapped on Saturday at Warner Pacific.  Despite losing three starters to graduation, OIT has a strong nucleus returning from their title club – including point-guard Levell Hesia (15.9 ppg), top-defender Michael Nunes (12.0 ppg, 5.8 rpg), and post Alex Carlson (14.1 ppg, 7.0 rpg).  The Hooters have shot the three-ball well this season (.407 percent), while limiting teams to just 67 points a night.  OIT looks for redemption against the ‘Yotes, as Albertson swept three games from the Owls last year – and the Coyotes have won two-straight and 3-of-4 at Danny Miles Court.  It is the 57th meeting between the clubs since 1962, with Albertson holding a 36-20 edge.  Saturday, Albertson looks to avenge the only two CCC losses from last season in the first of two meetings with Southern Oregon.  The Raiders (8-6, 5-1) have a one-half game lead atop the league, a year after they defeated Albertson 63-60 in Ashland and 78-57 in Caldwell.  The key to Southern’s attack is All-American Shea Washington (17.6 ppg, 10.5 rpg) – who averaged 21 points a game against the ‘Yotes last year.  Senior wing Brad Coen (11.5 ppg) has been hot of late, averaging 17 points a game in his last four contests.  The Raiders overall record is a bit deceiving, as five of SOU’s six losses have been by a combined 13 points.  It is the 45th meeting dating back to 1961, with Albertson holding a 32-12 edge.

TRIP SOUTH UNDER OWEN: It will be the fifth trip through Christmas Valley for the Coyotes under Mark Owen – with mixed results.  Albertson has won two-straight and 3-of-5 games at Oregon Tech, while the ‘Yotes are 2-2 at Southern Oregon.  The 2001-02 squad was swept by OIT and SOU on the trip, while the 2002-03 team did what only four other teams have done since the 1998-99 season, win two games on the trip.  During that span, CCC teams are 4-53 in attempts to sweep the Owls and Raiders (the other three sweeps were by the ‘Yotes in 2000, Western Baptist in 2002, and Concordia in 2003).

CONFERENCE-ONLY NUMBERS: Through the first three weeks of the Cascade Conference schedule, the Coyotes lead the ten-team league in seven statistical categories – scoring margin (+11.4), lowest opponents field goal percentage (.413), lowest opponents three-point percentage (.308), blocks per game (5.4), assists per game (18.1), steals per game (9.2), and turnover margin (3.4).  Individually, Joe Green leads the league in conference counters in assists per game (6.6) and steals per game (3.4), while Rich Fried leads the group in blocks per game (3.0).

CASCADE CONFERENCE LEADERS: Scoring Average – Eric Fiegi (WB) 27.2, Jeff Dunn (WB) 19.5, Shea Washington (SOU) 18.4, Mark Carollo (EOU) 17.3, Malik Edwards (CC) 17.2.  Rebound Average – Washington 10.5, Chad Fairbanks (EOU) 9.0, Fiegi 8.9, Jeff Williams (SOU) 7.3, Rich Fried (ACI) 6.9.  Field Goal Percentage – Stephen Ishmael (NU) .738, Tyson Dodd (NU) .671, Fiegi .610, Rich Fried (ACI) .607, Damian Browne (EOU) .606.  Assists Average – Joshua Garrett (CC) 6.9, Joe Green (ACI) 5.9, Donny Woods (WP) 4.9, Matt Larson (WB) 4.7, Andrew Gard (NU) 4.7.

LAST WEEK: vs. Eastern Oregon (L 69-50)

COMING UP: vs. Concordia, Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.; at Oregon Tech, Friday, 5:30 p.m. (PST); at Southern Oregon, Saturday, 5:30 p.m.

HOOTER TIES CONFERENCE RECORD: Although the Albertson College women’s basketball team did not have one of their better performances of the season in Friday’s 69-50 loss to Eastern Oregon, Kasey Hooter (Nampa, Idaho / Walla Walla CC) had one of the more remarkable nights in school history.  The senior logged 24 rebounds, not only surpassing her own school record of 21, but equaling the Cascade Conference record, set by Melissa Flick of Western Baptist against Columbia Christian during the 1992-93 season.  It was her 14th double-digit rebound game of the season and the 24th time that she has recorded ten-or-more rebounds in a game during her career.

REBOUDING AT ALBERTSON COLLEGE: The big performance by Kasey Hooter was the 26th time in the ten years of women’s basketball that a Lady ‘Yote player had recorded 15-or-more rebounds in a game.  Two-time All-Conference selection Kristen Bailey (2001-03) leads the way with nine such games, followed by Hooter with seven.  Two-time All-American Alyson Pincock (1999-01) had four 15-or-more rebound games.  The following are the top-ten individual rebound games in school history.

24      Kasey Hooter vs. EOU, 1/7/05                  18      Pincock vs. FPU, 12/30/00

21      Hooter vs. Great Falls, 11/13/04               17      Hooter vs. SOU, 2/13/04

19      Alyson Pincock vs. L&C, 12/9/00               17      Jeannie Thompson vs. NW, 1/12/02

SUCCESS AT HOME: Since basketball was rejuvenated at Albertson in 1995, the J.A. Albertson Activities Center has been very friendly to the Lady ‘Yotes.  During the previous nine years, the Coyotes have posted a 78-35 record (69-percent) on their own hardwood – with nine .500-or-better records at home.  Things are even better in Cascade Conference play, as the Lady ‘Yotes have posted a 48-21 home mark in league play (70-percent), including a perfect 8-0 record during the 2000-01 season.

MORE ON THE LOSS TO EASTERN: Despite holding the visiting Mountaineers without a field goal for the first five minutes of the contest, Albertson managed to take just a 4-0 lead.  The Lady ‘Yotes made just 6-of-27 shots in the opening period, scoring a season-low 19 first half points – trailing 28-19 at the break.  Albertson rallied, cutting the Eastern lead to 49-43 inside the eight-minute mark, but watched as the visitors used a 19-5 run to take control of the game.  Kim Strunk (Twin Falls, Idaho / Twin Falls HS) led the Coyotes with 14 points, one of four starters in double figures – but Eastern did not allow a single point off the Albertson bench.

CONCORDIA GAME ENDS FOUR-GAME HOMESTAND: The Lady ‘Yotes end a stretch of four consecutive home games on Tuesday night, hosting a much-improved Concordia squad.  The Cavaliers (9-6, 3-2 CCC) have doubled their entire win total from last season, thanks to first-year head coach Ken Trapp.  All-Conference forward Katie Atkins (18.6 ppg, 9.3 rpg) continues to be a force for the Cavs, which had a three-game win streak snapped on Saturday by Evergreen (61-59).  Atkins averaged 25 points and nine rebounds in the two meetings between the teams last season, however, Albertson swept the series.  Concordia is not a three-point shooting team (averaging less than ten three-point attempts per game), but has four players averaging in double figures.  It is the 20th meeting between the Coyotes and Cavaliers, with Albertson holding a 15-4 edge, including five in a row.

NEW PLAYER ADDED TO THE ROSTER: Albertson College has announced an addition to the women’s basketball roster, effective Tuesday night against Concordia.  Forward Whitney Martin (Rupert, Idaho / Boise State) will make her Coyote debut, a year after seeing action in 13 games at Boise State.  The sophomore scored 14 points and had 13 rebounds for the Broncos, including a career-high four points at Louisiana Tech.  Martin was an All-State player at Minico High as a prep.

SOUTHBOUND GO THE LADY ‘YOTES: The toughest CCC road trip of the season awaits Albertson this weekend, as the Lady ‘Yotes begin Friday at surging Oregon Tech.  The Owls (10-6, 5-1) have won their last six games, including a weekend sweep at Cascade and Warner Pacific.  CCC Player of the Year Nikki McElligott (16.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg) is having an outstanding season, as is sophomore Samantha Gilbert (12.6 ppg, 4.2 rpg) and Homedale product, Kelsi Haylett (24 points in Saturday’s win at WPC).  OIT does it with defense, as the Hooters allow just 56 points per game, 11th-best in the NAIA.  Albertson split the season series with the Owls last year, winning 57-55 in Caldwell, but losing 69-65 in Klamath Falls, where the ‘Yotes have never won in three tries.  OIT holds the all-time series edge, 4-1.  After a snowy two-hour jaunt over Lake of the Woods, Albertson meets Southern Oregon on Saturday night.  The Raiders (3-14, 2-4) got off to a miserable start to the season, losing their first seven games.  However, recent wins over Northwest and Warner Pacific have Kevin Wilson’s squad headed in the right direction.  Guard Andi Peterson (13.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg) averaged 27 points per game over the recent road trip, including 30 in the Raiders loss at Cascade.  Defense has been the sore spot for Southern, giving up 79 points a game – while converting on just .214 percent of their three-point attempts.  It is the 22nd meeting between the teams, with Southern holding a 13-8 advantage – and has only lost once since 1995 to Albertson at McNeal Pavilion.

NATIONAL AND CONFERENCE NUMBERS: As a team, the Lady ‘Yotes rank in the NAIA Division II’s Top-35 in four statistical categories – No. 16 in rebound margin (+6.2), No. 25 in opponents rebound average (34.6), No. 30 in assists per game (15.4) and rebounds per game (40.7), and No. 31 in offensive rebounds per game (15.2).  Individually, Kasey Hooter leads in the Cascade Conference and the NAIA Division II in rebounds per game (12.2), and second in the league and 21th nationally in field goal percentage (.554).  Hooter is also ninth in the CCC in scoring average (13.7).  Angie Gribble (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) is second in the CCC and 12th nationally in assists per game (5.2), and is also third in the league and 38th in the NAIA in steals per game (2.7).  Gribble is also ninth in the loop in free throw percentage (.794) and tenth in three-point percentage (.362).  Valissa Sneck (Kalispell, Mont. / Sheridan CC) ranks sixth in the league in steals per game (2.2), along with seventh in the CCC in assists per game (3.9).  Kim Strunk is sixth in the CCC in free throw percentage (.816), while ranking tenth in the league in scoring average (13.4).  Rounding out the Coyote leaders is Desirae Boudreaux (Provo, Utah / Western Wyoming CC), who is seventh in the league in rebounds per game (6.6).

CONFERENCE ONLY NUMBERS: In conference-only counters, the Lady ‘Yotes lead the league in steals per game (12.0).  Individually, Kasey Hooter leads the way in rebounds per game (13.6), while Angie Gribble is tops in steals per game (4.0).  Gribble is also fourth in three-point percentage (.440), with Kim Strunk fourth in scoring average (17.2).

CONFERENCE LEADERS: Scoring Average – Katie Atkins (CU) 18.6, Christie Weaver (EOU) 17.2, Jaime Jo Cant (EOU) 17.0, Nikki McElligott (OIT) 16.5, Heidi Horobioski (EOU) 14.6.  Rebounding Average – Kasey Hooter (ACI) 12.2, McElligott 11.5, Atkins 9.3, Kaeley Triller (NU) 7.2, Cant 7.2.  Field Goal Percentage – Sammy Smith (CU) .597, Hooter .554, Horobioski .477, Sierra Tornga (NU) .475, Heather Hyde (EVG) .471.  Assists Average – Vanessa Shelton (EOU) 5.7, Angie Gribble (ACI) 5.2, Cassie Snyder (NU) 5.0, Tosha Wilson (WB) 4.1, Shara Brazzle (CC) 4.1.

RECORD BOOK: As the Lady ‘Yotes passed the halfway point of the 2004-05 season, the assault on the single-season and career record book has begun.  Just 17 games into the season, a quartet of players will most likely be in the season record book by the end of next weekend.  Kim Strunk is already tied for seventh in the season free throws made category (84), while Kasey Hooter is ninth in the season rebound total (219).  Angie Gribble and Valissa Sneck rank 11th and 12th respectively in single-season steals. Hooter ranks No. 9 all time with 406 rebounds and No. 10 with 20 career blocked shots, while Strunk is ninth all-time with 137 made free throws.
