MEN’S BASKETBALL (13-5, 5-3 CCC): No. 14 Coyotes put 14-game home win streak on line vs. Evergreen and Northwest

LAST WEEK: vs. Concordia (W 84-61), at No. 10 Oregon Tech (L 82-63), at No. 24 Southern Oregon (L 84-73).

COMING UP: vs. Evergreen, Friday, 7:30 p.m.; vs. Northwest, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

RADIO BROADCASTS: All 29 Albertson men’s basketball games will be broadcast live on 1490 KCID-AM with Mike Safford Jr. calling the action, along with a simulcast via the Albertson Athletic Website.  Broadcast time this weekend is 7:15 p.m. for the pregame show and 7:30 p.m. for tip-off of the Evergreen and Northwest games.  No broadcasts will be originated by either Evergreen or Northwest.

COYOTES FALL TO NO. 14 IN MIDSEASON NAIA POLL: For the first time in 15 regular-season NAIA Division II national polls, the Albertson College men’s basketball team has fallen from the top-ten – as the ‘Yotes were ranked No. 14 in the fifth ranking, released Tuesday.  The Coyotes began the season ranked No. 21, then jumped to No. 8 for the first two regular-season polls, before spending one week at No. 7 and No. 5.  Albertson spent the entire 2003-04 season in the top-ten, including three weeks at No. 3.  Also in the poll is No. 2, No. 10 Oregon Tech, and No. 24 Southern Oregon. William Jewell (Mo.) is ranked No. 1, followed by Western, Cornerstone (Mich.), Northwestern (Iowa), and Cedarville (Ohio).

HOME HAS BEEN NICE TO THE ‘YOTES: A home court advantage has been key to the success of the Coyotes over nearly the last quarter century.  From the days at O’Connor Fieldhouse to the spacious Activities Center – wins by opponents have come few and far between – including a perfect 6-0 start to the 2004-05 season and current 14-game win streak.  Since the on-campus gymnasium was opened in the Fall of 1991, the ‘Yotes have compiled a 157-30 mark at home, a gaudy .841 win percentage – with an 87-16 mark in Cascade Conference play (.844 win percentage).  Under Mark Owen, the Coyotes are 50-10 at home (.833 percent) and have won 34-of-40 CCC games.  Only once in the last 23 years have the ‘Yotes lost more than three games at home.

MORE ON THE HOME COOKIN’: Dating back to the 1982-83 season, Albertson has an almost unfathomable 274-39 record at home (.876 win percentage) – including a 56-game home win streak from March 5, 1983 to Dec. 19, 1987.

CONSECUTIVE LOSSES RARE UNDER OWEN: Consecutive losses for the Coyotes have been a rare thing dating back to the 2000-01 season.  During the five year span, Albertson has lost back-to-back games on just seven occasions – with three of them in Mark Owen’s first year as head coach.  In fact, the Coyotes have lost more than two games in a row just twice under Owen – the first three games of the 2000-01 season, and a four-game stretch during the 2001-02 season where Albertson forfeited a pair of games due to an ineligible player.

TRAILING IN A GAME: For a 133 minute and 17 second stretch, the Albertson men’s basketball team did not trail in a contest.  The Coyotes last trailed on December 30, 11-10, to Cascade with 11:08 left in the first half.  They would hold the lead until Oregon Tech grabbed a 49-48 edge with 15:35 left in the second half of Friday’s game (which coincidentally was the first time the ‘Yotes trailed in 2005).

HOME VS. ROAD: With the tough road trip for the Coyotes, numbers jump out when comparing Cascade Conference games in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center and on the road.  In the four home league games, the ‘Yotes are averaging nearly 84 points a game, converting .491 percent of their field goal attempts, .416 percent of their shots outside the arc, while holding opponents to just under 64 points a game.  On the road it is a different story, as Albertson averages only 69 points a night, is shooting .447 percent from the floor, .342 from three-point range, and is giving up 77 points a game.  All in all, the Coyotes are 4-0 at home in CCC play, just 1-3 on the road.

GREEN HAS TOP-NOTCH WEEK: The catalyst for the Coyotes all week was point-guard Joe Green (Pocatello, Idaho / BYU-Idaho), whose steady play lifted Albertson to a win over Concordia and kept the club close against OIT and Southern.  Green went 14-of-23 from the floor (.609 percent), nailing 9-of-15 (.600 percent) shots from three-point range – averaging 13.7 points, 6.7 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.3 steals.  The senior had a season-high 19 points in the loss at Oregon Tech.  Green currently leads the Cascade Conference and the NAIA Division II in steals per game (4.2) and assist-to-turnover ratio (3.18), while ranking second in the CCC and fifth in the nation in three-point percentage (.500) and second in the league and tenth in the NAIA in assists per game (6.0).  His 77 steals this season is sixth on the single-season list, just 30 behind the school-record he set last season.  Green now has 266 career steals – 70 more than his closest competitor, has 420 career assists (second only to Mark Owen), is ranked sixth all-time with a .429 three-point percentage, and has made 130 career treys – tenth-best in school history.

FRIED TORCHES NET AT SOUTHERN: Playing against one of the premier post players in the NAIA, Richard Fried (Middleton, Idaho / Boise State Univ.) had one of the best halves of basketball in his career.  Matched up against All-American Shea Washington, the senior went 7-of-9 from the floor, made all six of his free throws, scoring 20 points and grabbing six rebounds in the opening 20 minutes at Southern Oregon – including an emphatic dunk off an errant Coyote shot.  Fried went on to score a career-high 24 points and had nine rebounds in the loss.  He currently ranks second in the CCC and 19th in the NAIA in blocks per game (1.9), ranks fourth in the league and 13th in the nation in field goal percentage (.600), and is sixth in the loop in rebound average (6.9).  Fried has also moved into a tie for eighth-place on the single-season blocked shot list with 34.

SHOOTERS ITCH: During the loss to Southern Oregon, forward Dan McFaul (Moses Lake, Wash. / Big Bend CC) put up the most field goal attempts by a Albertson player since the 1997-98 season.  The junior made 10-of-24 attempts from the floor, scoring a career-high 21 points in the loss, but also went 0-of-5 from outside the arc.  The 24 shot attempts were the most since Everett Ratliff made 10-of-28 shots in a 97-94 loss to Christian Heritage on Dec. 18, 1997.  No other Coyote had attempted more than 21 shots in a game during that seven-year period.

FAST START LIFTS ‘YOTES PAST CONCORDIA: The score 42-7 looks like something that would be found on a football field.  However, it was the score of the Albertson-Concordia men’s basketball game last Tuesday after 13 minutes in the ‘Yotes 84-61 romp over the Cavaliers.  Albertson got two jumpers by Steve Humphreys (Reno, Nev. / Lassen CC), a dunk from Richard Fried, and trey and a deuce from Joe Green in the first 150 seconds, opening an 11-0 lead.  One of four first half treys from freshman Josh Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) built the lead to 31-5 at the 10:09 mark of the period, while two Fried freebies gave the 'Yotes a 42-7 edge with 7:27 left.  Owen tied a career-high with 15 points, Humphreys added 14 points and five blocks, while Fried had 13 points and eight boards.  Green had 11 points and eight assists, with Dan McFaul and E.J. Costello (Pleasanton, Calif. / Chabot CC) each scoring ten.

TEN-MINUTE STRETCH DOOMS COYOTES: After battling No. 10 ranked Oregon Tech for the first 25 minutes of Friday’s game in Klamath Falls, the lid completely shut on the Albertson basket, as the Owls ran away with a 82-63 win.  The Coyotes led 43-39 at the break, with OIT not getting their first lead of the game until a Danny Miles lay-up made it 49-48 with 15:25 to play.  However, Albertson would go over ten minutes without a made field goal, missing seven shots from inside five feet during that stretch, compounding the loss.  Joe Green and Steve Humphreys led the ‘Yotes with 19 points in the game.

THREE-POINT BARRAGE GIVES SOUTHERN THE EDGE: Southern Oregon hit 8-of-11 three-point shots in the second half, three in a decisive 11-0 run, lifting the No. 24 Raiders past Albertson, 84-73.  After the Coyotes took a 58-57 lead on a Joe Green lay-up, Brad Coen hit back-to-back triples, followed by a Matt Cowell bomb, to put Southern up for good.  It was the seventh win for the Raiders in their last ten meetings with Albertson.

WASHINGTONIANS HEADED TO C-TOWN: Friday night, Evergreen brings a modest two-game win streak to Caldwell. The Geoducks (8-14, 3-6 CCC) halted a seven-game losing streak with an 52-51 win at Northwest last Friday, following it up with a 104-71 victory at Cascade on Tuesday.  The 2001-02 Cascade Conference champs are led by forward Walter Tucker (12.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg), who had a season-high 24 points vs. Western Baptist, and post Barson Collins (9.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg), who had 18 points in the win over Cascade.  Evergreen took the ‘Yotes to overtime earlier this season, with missed free throws hurting the Geoducks in a 69-62 loss.  It is the 12th meeting between the teams, with Albertson holding an 8-3 advantage – winning five in a row.  Saturday, the Coyotes will finally get their rematch with Northwest, something they have been looking forward to since the Eagles (13-8, 5-4) handed Albertson a CCC-opening 79-72 defeat.  Aaron Sawyer (16.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg) has been fabulous for John Van Dyke’s squad, earning NAIA Player-of-the-Week accolades after the Eagles upset then No. 1 ranked Western Baptist.  Freshman Stephen Ishmael (11.3 ppg, .758 FG%) leads the NAIA in field goal percentage and scored 23 points in the earlier meeting.  It is the 18th meeting between the clubs, with Albertson holding a 12-5 edge.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (11-10, 5-3 CCC): Gribble ties school-record in win at Southern, Lady ‘Yotes begin 3-game homestand

LAST WEEK: vs. Concordia (W 69-50), at Oregon Tech (L 65-52), at Southern Oregon (W 71-50)

COMING UP: vs. Evergreen, Friday, 5:30 p.m.; vs. Northwest, Saturday, 5:30 p.m.

RADIO BROADCASTS: Ten Albertson women’s basketball games will be broadcast live on 1490 KCID-AM with Mike Safford Jr. calling the action, along with a total of 22 games simulcast via the Albertson Athletic Website.  Internet broadcast time on Friday and Saturday night is 5:25 p.m.– with Jordan Komoto and Jake McClean calling the play-by-play.  The next scheduled radio broadcast is set for Jan. 28, when the Lady ‘Yotes head to Cascade College.

DID YOU SEE THE TWINS ON TELEVISION?: The newest addition to the Albertson College women’s basketball family made their television debut on Tuesday – as Maggie and Darby Rossi, twin daughters of head coach Reagan Rossi, were part of a feature story on KIVI-TV’s six and ten o’clock news.  The piece focused on the balancing act of being a mom and coaching, along with the learning experience it has been for the entire women’s basketball team.  Unfortunately, the twins’ dad, Rudy, was out of town and will have to watch the story on videotape.

BREAKTHROUGH AT SOUTHERN OREGON: The hardwood at McNeal Pavilion had been the toughest place for the Albertson College women’s basketball team to play in the Cascade Conference (outside Montgomery Fieldhouse at Northwest Nazarene), heading into Saturday’s fray with Southern Oregon.  However, the Lady ‘Yotes broke through in a big way, defeating the Raiders, 71-50.  Albertson had been 1-9 in Ashland in the previous ten meetings since women’s basketball was started at the school in 1995-96, with the only win being a 58-47 Lady ‘Yote win in 2001.

MORE ON THE WIN: Albertson went wire-to-wire in the victory, jumping out to an 11-2 lead, watching Southern cut the margin to 44-40, but ended the game on a 15-2 run to seal the win.  Kim Strunk (Twin Falls, Idaho / Twin Falls HS) scored 18 points and added nine rebounds in the key road victory, as the Lady ‘Yotes evened their CCC road mark at 2-2.

GRIBBLE TIES ASSIST MARK: Also in the victory over Southern Oregon, point-guard Angie Gribble (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) became the fourth Albertson women’s basketball player to record 11 assists in a game.  The junior tied the school-record with a dish to post Desirae Boudreaux (Provo, Utah / Western Wyoming CC) with two seconds remaining in the game.  It was the first time a Lady ‘Yote had registered 11 assists since Jeannie Thompson equaled the feat against Maine-Fort Kent on Nov. 18, 2000.

NEW HOUSE OF HORRORS – MILES COURT: The Coyotes have only played there for three seasons, but an 0-4 record makes it the most difficult place for the Albertson women to play.  Danny Miles Court at Oregon Tech proved again to be that tough, as the Owls rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Purple and Gold, 65-52.  The Lady ‘Yotes opened up an early 14-7 lead, holding OIT to just 3-for-20 shooting, but had two stretches of more than eight minutes without a field goal.

SECOND HALF RALLY LIFTS COYOTES PAST CONCORDIA: Albertson College used a substantial rebound margin and a 24-2 second half run to knock off Concordia, 69-50, last Tuesday in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  The Lady 'Yotes trailed 33-28 early in the second half, but rattled off 16-straight points to gain control.  Kasey Hooter (Nampa, Idaho / Walla Walla CC) scored six of her 14 points in the run, to go along with a game-high 18 rebounds.  Valissa Sneck (Kalispell, Mont. / Sheridan CC) had 16 points for Albertson, while Angie Gribble added 14 points and six assists.  Kim Strunk chipped in with nine points and a career-high 15 boards

SUCCESS AT HOME: Since basketball was rejuvenated at Albertson in 1995, the J.A. Albertson Activities Center has been very friendly to the Lady ‘Yotes.  During the previous nine years, the Coyotes have posted a 79-35 record (69-percent) on their own hardwood – with nine .500-or-better records at home.  Things are even better in Cascade Conference play, as the Lady ‘Yotes have posted a 49-21 home mark in league play (70-percent), including a perfect 8-0 record during the 2000-01 season.

WHO IS WHITNEY MARTIN?: Last week, transfer Whitney Martin (Rupert, Idaho / Boise State Univ.) made her long-awaited Coyote debut – and what a solid week it was.  The sophomore averaged eight points and six rebounds in the three contests, including eight points and seven rebounds against Concordia, and a team-high ten rebounds in the win at Southern Oregon.  The former Minico High star averaged 26 minutes per game during the three games.

HOOTER CONTINUES TO CLIMB THE CHARTS: Post Kasey Hooter is establishing herself as one of the top low-block players in Albertson women’s basketball history.  The senior has notched 255 rebounds in the 21 games this season – already No. 6 on the single-season chart.  Her 12.1 rebounds per game average is tops in the Cascade Conference and is second in the NAIA – she is also ranks fifth in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (7.8) and sixth in offensive rebounds per game (4.3).  Other parts of her game continue to excel – as Hooter ranks No. 13 in the NAIA in field goal percentage (.567), while ranking No. 5 in the CCC in blocks per game (1.0) and No. 7 in scoring average (13.8).  Her 21 blocks this season are the seventh-most in a season for the Lady ‘Yotes, while the 29 career blocks are the tenth-most in school history.  Hooter has made 200-of-343 career shots, a .583 field goal percentage – tops in school history.

REBOUDING AT ALBERTSON COLLEGE: The big rebound performances by Kim Strunk and Kasey Hooter against Concordia was the 27th and 28th time in the ten years of women’s basketball that a Lady ‘Yote player had recorded 15-or-more rebounds in a game.  Two-time All-Conference selection Kristen Bailey (2001-03) leads the way with nine such games, followed by Hooter with eight.  Two-time All-American Alyson Pincock (1999-01) had four 15-or-more rebound games.  The following are the top-ten individual rebound games in school history.

24  Kasey Hooter vs. EOU, 1/7/05   19  Alyson Pincock vs. L&C, 12/9/00   17  Bailey vs. WBC, 1/5/02

21  Hooter vs. Great Falls, 11/13/04 18  Hooter vs. Concordia, 1/11/05      17  J. Thompson vs. NW, 1/12/02

20  Kristen Bailey vs. OIT, 2/25/03  18  Pincock vs. FPU, 12/30/00           17  Bailey vs. Bethany, 12/28/01

19  Bailey vs. SOU, 1/4/02             17  Hooter vs. SOU, 2/13/04

KEY WEEKEND FOR LADY ‘YOTES: Outside of the solid play of Oregon Tech and Eastern Oregon, Evergreen may be the next hottest team in the league. Quietly, the Geoducks (10-9, 5-4 CCC) have snuck their way into the upper half of the Cascade Conference race by winning four games in a row – including three straight on the road.  Evergreen, which has never won in Caldwell, is led by sophomore Jenny Olson (12.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg), who had 20 points in a win last weekend over Northwest, and Kamrica Ary-Turner (11.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg), a gifted freshman.  The Geoducks are among the top defensive teams in the league, allowing opponents less than 60-points a game, while leading the CCC in steals.  It is the 15th meeting between the teams, with Albertson holding a 13-1 advantage, including a 60-45 win earlier in the year.  Saturday, a struggling Northwest team makes the long jaunt to Caldwell.  The Eagles (7-13, 2-7) have fallen onto hard times since their 77-74 victory over Albertson in December.  Northwest has lost seven games in a row (not counting a forfeit win over Cascade), by an average of 13 points per night – with opponents scoring 73 points per game.  Bekah Proctor (10.7 ppg, .410 3FG%) leads the Eagles in scoring – pouring in 20 points in their victory over the Lady ‘Yotes, while Kaeley Triller (9.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg) provides the punch inside.  Albertson leads the all-time series, 15-5, but has dropped four consecutive games with Northwest.

CONFERENCE LEADERS: Scoring Average – Christie Weaver (EOU) 16.7, Nikki McElligott (OIT) 16.7, Katie Atkins (CU) 16.5, Jaime Jo Cant (EOU) 15.9, Heidi Horobioski (EOU) 14.7.  Rebounding Average – Kasey Hooter (ACI) 12.1, McElligott 11.3, Atkins 8.7, Kelly Clarke (NU) 7.2, Lisa Berger-Freeman (CC) 7.0.  Field Goal Percentage – Sammy Smith (CU) .603, Hooter .567, Sarah Smith (EOU) .561, Horobioski .481, McElligott .476.  Assists Average – Vanessa Shelton (EOU) 5.4, Angie Gribble (ACI) 5.2, Cassie Snyder (NU) 5.2, Tosha Wilson (WB) 4.2, Shara Brazzle (CC) 4.1.

ALPINE SKIING:

COMING UP: Northwest Conference Qualifier #1, Saturday-Sunday, Willamette Pass, Ore.

WILL THE ‘YOTES SKI: As of Wednesday afternoon, the opening of the Northwest Conference ski season is still set for this weekend at Willamette Pass, as the Coyotes are set to ski two giant slalom races.  However, unseasonable weather – temperatures in the 50’s above 5,000-feet and rain are in the forecast, which could wash out the competition.

COYOTES TO HOST REGIONAL AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: Albertson College will be the mecca of college skiing later this winter, as the ‘Yotes host the 2005 Western Region Championships at Bogus Basin from Feb. 24-26.  Not to be outdone, the Coyotes will also be the host of the 2005 USCSA National Championships, to be held at Brundage Mountain from March 9-12.

SNOW REPORT: Bogus Basin reports a 33-inch base and 60 inches at the summit, while Brundage Mountain reports one inch of new snow, with a 37-inch base and 63 inches at the summit.

SWIMMING: Coyotes conclude first swim season with solid performance at Lewis & Clark

LAST WEEK: Men at Lewis & Clark (L 83-59); Women at Lewis & Clark (L 170-19), vs. CSU-Hayward (L 98-42).

FIRST YEAR COMPLETED: The first-year Albertson College men's swim team nearly pulled off their first-ever dual victory, narrowly losing to Lewis & Clark College, 83-59, at Zinkbauer Pool. The Coyotes swept both the 200-medley and 200-freestyle relays, while Blake Bower took home first-place in the 50-free and Chad Longo won the 100-backstroke.  However, with only four competitors, Albertson had four races without competition for the Pioneers - with the 36 free points providing the winning margin.
