VOLLEYBALL (14-7, 11-4 CCC): Win streaks on the line against Lewis-Clark State
and Eastern Oregon
LAST WEEK: at Cascade (W 3-0); at Warner Pacific (W 3-2
COMING UP: vs. Lewis-Clark State, Thursday, 7 p.m.; at
Eastern Oregon, Saturday, 7 p.m. (PDT)
DUO EARN WEEKLY HONORS, AGAIN:
For the fourth time this season, sophomore
setter Erin Cherrington (Granby, Colo. / Middle Fork HS) was
named Cascade Conference Setter of the Week.
Cherrington led the Lady ‘Yotes to a weekend sweep of Cascade and Warner
Pacific, including a 61-assist night in the five-game win over Warner Pacific. She currently leads the Cascade Conference
in assists per game and adds this honor to the awards she earned for the week’s
of Sept 5-11, Sept. 26-Oct. 2, and Oct. 10-16.
Also earning weekly honors was senior Ashlea Thornton (Glendora,
Calif. / Cal Baptist), who has won the Player of the Week honors for the
second straight week. Thornton led the
way with 18 kills in the win at Cascade on Friday night, and backed it up with
18 more against Warner Pacific – and ended the week with a .459 hitting
percentage.
‘YOTES HOT HOME STREAK: With Cascade Conference wins over Northwest and
Evergreen two weeks ago, the Albertson volleyball team upped their
school-record home win streak to 12 matches.
Albertson has not lost on their home court since an October 25, 2003
loss to Concordia. The Lady ‘Yotes, who
are 8-0 at home, equaled the 1998 club that won eight-in-a-row to start a
season in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center. The school-record for consecutive home wins to start as season is
nine, set during the 1999 season.
COYOTES STAY PAT IN REGIONAL
POLL: Despite having won nine of
their last ten matches, the Lady ‘Yotes moved just one spot to No. 5 in the
NAIA Region I top-ten rankings.
Southern Oregon (No. 22 in the NAIA) relinquished the No. 1 spot for the
first time this season, after losing to Northwest and now sits at No. 2. Carroll (No. 17) is now the top team in the
region, followed by Montana Tech, Western Baptist, and the ‘Yotes. Northwest, Oregon Tech, Concordia, Montana
State-Northern, and Rocky Mountain round out the top-ten.
LAST TIME IN THE NATIONAL
POLL: Albertson last received votes
in the NAIA poll during the 2001 season – a year after making their lone
National Tournament appearance. The
‘Yotes began 2001 ranked No. 15 in the preseason poll, dropped to No. 19 in the
first regular-season poll, and have not been ranked since.
COYOTES IN THE PLAYOFFS: The Lady ‘Yotes clinched their sixth-consecutive
postseason berth over the weekend with wins in Portland. Not only did Albertson sew up a berth in the
Cascade Conference tournament, but all six slots in the weekend of madness were
determined. Southern Oregon, Northwest,
the ‘Yotes, Western Baptist, Oregon Tech, and Concordia all have earned berths
in the tournament, set for Nov. 12-13.
The site of the event will be determined by the first-place team in the
league, who will also host the six-team NAIA Region I tournament on Nov. 18-20.
CASCADE NO MATCH FOR COYOTES: Ashlea Thornton led the
way with 18 kills and Katie Hogue (Sparks, Nev. / Reed HS) had
five stuff blocks as the Albertson volleyball team clinched a Cascade
Conference Tournament spot with a convincing 30-15, 30-17, 30-19 win over
Cascade College in the Thunderdome on Friday night. The victory will allow the Lady 'Yotes to advance to the
postseason for the sixth consecutive season.
The stats tell it all about the 30-15, 30-17, 30-19 win, as Albertson
rolled with 52 kills and a .353 swinging percentage - while holding the T-Birds
to 18 spikes and a -.038 hitting night.
Thornton had her best hitting night of the year, recording just three
errors to go along with her 18 kills and ten digs. Hogue, who was just
one solo block away from the school record, adding eight kills, with Fran
Hartman (Lakeview, Ore. / Lakeview HS) providing 14 more
spikes. Erin Cherrington continued her torrid play with 46 assists.
WARNER PUTS UP A FIGHT, BUT
LOSES: Albertson
College rallied from a two games to one deficit Saturday to outlast Warner
Pacific, 30-26, 28-30, 25-30, 30-23, 16-14, in a Cascade Conference volleyball
match at C.C. Perry Gym. The victory
for the Lady 'Yotes was their ninth in ten matches, allowed the squad to move
into sole possession of third-place in the league standings, and complete their
first road sweep of the year. Ashlea
Thornton, the reigning NAIA Region I Player of the Week, continued her torrid
play, recording a game-high 18 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. She
was one of four Coyotes in double-digit kills, as Charity Gaston (Harrisonburg.
Va. / James Madison Univ.) had 16, Fran Hartman 14, and Katie Hogue ten -
to go along with six blocks. The
Knights, who were pummeled by the 'Yotes in Idaho, got 17 kills from Orejeona
LaFever - but had their bid for their third-straight conference win thwarted. Albertson also received 61 assists from Erin
Cherrington and a game-high 24 digs from Kahli Mann (Nampa, Idaho /
Skyview HS).
RECORD WATCH: The Albertson College individual single-season and
career top-ten lists are seeing some reshuffling, courtesy of the 2004 Lady
‘Yote volleyballers. Kahli Mann is
making a big splash, currently on pace to shatter the digs per game in a season
record, currently averaging 5.10 digs a game, well ahead of the 4.40 mark set
by Tara Daniel in 1997. Her 393 digs
this season is nearing the single-season top-ten, with six regular-season
matches to go. Mann has also climbed
into the all-time top-ten in aces with 107, good enough for sixth-place, four
behind Brecia Gamett and fifth, and is tenth all-time in digs (764). Erin Cherrington has moved into fourth-place
on the career assist list with 1,705, while Jenn Luchini (Cataldo,
Idaho / Kellogg HS) ranks tenth all-time in aces with 89.
NON CONFERENCE BREAK, SATURDAY
TILT AT EASTERN: Albertson takes a short
break from Cascade Conference play on Thursday, hosting in-state rival Lewis-Clark
State. The Warriors (7-13) have
struggled this season – a year after they advanced to the NAIA Region I title
game against Southern Oregon (after knocking off the Lady ‘Yotes in five
games). Five different LC-State players
average two or more kills per game – led by attacker Amanda Browne (2.88 k/g,
2.09 d/g). Albertson defeated the
Warriors in three games (30-23, 30-20, 30-21) earlier this season in Lewiston –
just the second time in ten all-time matches that the Coyotes have beaten their
NAIA foes from the north. Saturday
night, the Lady ‘Yotes put a 18-match win streak on the line when they travel
to Eastern Oregon. The
Mountaineers (4-15, 4-11 CCC) have not defeated Albertson since the 1996 season
and have dropped 20 consecutive games to the Coyotes. All-Star candidate Kaki McLean (4.3 k/g, 3.9 d/g), who also stars
for the Eastern rodeo team, is their best weapon. Albertson holds a 26-9 all-time record against the Mountaineers.

SWIMMING: Coyotes
hit the pool for their first-ever intercollegiate competition at Logger Classic
COMING UP: at University of Puget Sound’s Logger Classic,
Tacoma, Wash. – Saturday, 2 p.m. (PDT)
SWIMMING PROGRAM MAKES ITS
DEBUT: The long awaited debut of the
Albertson College swim team will finally happen, as the Coyotes head to Tacoma,
Wash. for the Logger Classic against the University of Puget Sound. It will be the first time that the college
will have sponsored a swimming program – and one of only two schools in Idaho
to sponsor an intercollegiate program (the University of Idaho has a women’s
swim program.
ABOUT THE COACH: A
familiar face is the head coach of the Coyote swimmers. Mike Shines is the first head coach
of its new intercollegiate swim program, having served as the Director of
Aquatics and swim instructor at the J.A. Albertson Aquatics Center on the
Albertson campus for the last eight years. He has also served as the
institution's strength coach for the past 12 seasons.
HOW SWIMMING SCORING WORKS: Outside of invitational meets (multiple teams),
the Coyotes will compete in dual meets against Seattle University and Lewis
& Clark College. These short-course
duals will have 13 events taking place.
Scoring for these events are based on how many lanes are utilized in an
event. If six-or-more lanes are used,
relay finishes will receive 11-4-2 points (11 for first, 4 for second, 2 for
third), with only the top-two relays from each team receiving points. Individual races will receive 9-4-3-2-1
points, with the top three on each team scoring points. If five-or-less lanes are used, the top
relay receives seven points, while in individual races, first-place receives
five points, second receives three, and third one (with only the top-two
finishers on a team scoring). At the end
of the meet, the points are tallied, with the squad with the most points
posting the win.
HOW THE ‘YOTES GET TO
NATIONALS: For Albertson swimmers to
qualify for the NAIA Championships, it is a bit different than most sports. Prior to each season, the NAIA posts
provisional times in each individual event or relay that competitors or teams
must best to be eligible for nationals.
If a relay or individual passes that time, they are eligible to compete
in the national meet. To view the
qualifying standards, go to http://www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/swim/standards.htm.
ABOUT THE MEN’S TEAM: Shines is very optimistic about the men’s team’s
chances this season. The Coyotes are
anchored by freshman sprinter Blake Bower (Boise, Idaho / Timberline
HS), who will compete in the 50 and 100-freestyle. Many think that he may be able to reach the
NAIA provisional time this weekend in Tacoma.
Other top end male swimmers for the ‘Yotes include freshman Alex
Voshell (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) in the 400-freestyle,
senior Chad Longo (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho / North Idaho CC) in
the 200-medley and 100-backstroke, and freshman Rory Newell (Laguna
Beach, Calif. / Laguna Beach HS) in the 50 and 100-freestyle.
ABOUT THE WOMEN’S TEAMS: The women’s team will be paced by a quartet of
swimmers. Leading the group is
sophomore Kristyn Price (Meridian, Idaho / Eagle HS), who will be
competing in the 100-backstroke, along with the 50 and 100-freestyle. Other members of the select group are junior
Drew Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon HS) in the
100-backstroke and 200-medley, sophomore La Chele Wieting (Eagle,
Idaho / Eagle HS) in the 50-free and 100-breaststroke, and sophomore Sara
Bates (East Wenatchee, Wash. / Eastmont HS) in the 50-free and
200-medley.

in NAIA Poll, begin season next Friday at Boise State
COMING UP: at Boise State, next Friday, 7:30 p.m.
RADIO: All regular-season men’s basketball games will be

‘YOTES RANKED #21 TO START
SEASON: Fresh off their Round of 16
finish at the NAIA Division II national tournament, the Albertson men’s
basketball team was ranked No. 21 in the preseason NAIA Division II Top-25
poll. The ‘Yotes were one of four
Cascade Conference teams in the group – Oregon Tech (No. 1), Southern Oregon
(No. 16), and Western Baptist (No. 34).
PRESEASON RANKINGS BECOMING
FAMILIAR: For the fourth consecutive
season, the Coyotes have been ranked to start the season. Last season, Albertson began the year No. 12
and ascended as high as No. 3 in the nation.
During the 2002-03 season, the ‘Yotes began at No. 15, fell out of the
poll, then rebounded for a second-round appearance at the NAIA tournament. The 2001-02 team began the year at No. 8,
but injuries plagued the team, as it failed to get out of the Cascade Conference
tournament. The last team not to be
ranked to start a season was the 2000-01 club, Mark Owen’s first as head
coach, a team that eventually advanced to the Elite Eight of the NAIA
Tournament.
PRESEASON COACHES POLL: The ten coaches in the Cascade Conference
conducted their first poll – a precursor to the NAIA poll. Defending national champion, Oregon Tech,
was the odds-on favorite to win the league, with the Coyotes coming in third.

BOISE STATE GAME MARKED AS AN
EXHIBITION: Thanks to a new rule by the
NAIA, men’s and women’s basketball teams are now allowed one exhibition contest
as part of their 32-game schedule. The
Coyotes have decided to have the game next Friday against Boise State be
designated as an exhibition contest.
The result of the game, along with any statistics, will not count in the
regular-season records.
OWEN NEARING 100 WINS: Heading into the 2004-05 season, head coach Mark
Owen is two wins away from No. 100. In
his first four years as head coach, Coach O has a 98-42 overall record.

SEASON OPENER JUST A WEEK
AWAY: The 2004-05 Albertson College
women’s basketball team makes their debut a week from Friday, heading north to
play in the Carroll College Classic in Helena.
It is the third time in four seasons that the Lady ‘Yotes will open the
season against Carroll – the Saints played Albertson in Caldwell to start the
2001-02 campaign and the Coyotes traveled north for the same tournament two
years ago.
CASCADE CONFERENCE COACHES
VOTE LADY ‘YOTES SIXTH: The Cascade Conference
women’s basketball preseason poll was released earlier this week, with the
league coaches voting Albertson College sixth out of the ten team league. Leading the balloting was Warner Pacific,
one of two teams to represent the CCC at last season’s NAIA Division II
national tournament.

NAIA NATIONAL POLL: Defending national champion Morningside of Iowa
earned all 17 first-place votes and was named the unanimous choice as the No. 1
team in the NAIA Division II in the initial Top-25 poll. Warner Pacific was ranked No. 28, while
Oregon Tech was ranked No. 39. Another future opponent of the Lady ‘Yotes
was ranked, including No. 6 ranked Dominican (Calif.), who will meet Albertson
at the Best Western Lady ‘Yote Classic in November. Two other opponents in the NAIA Division I were ranked, the
aforementioned Carroll College (No. 16 in NAIA I) and Montana-Western (No. 23),
who the Coyotes will play at the Westminster Tournament.
COYOTES TO DEEM ONE GAME AN
EXHIBITION: Thanks to a new NAIA guideline
that allows men’s and women’s basketball teams a chance to designate one game
per season as an exhibition, the Lady ‘Yotes will take advantage of the rule to
have one of their 32 games be a non-counter.
The Albertson-Boise State meeting on November 9 in the newly named Taco
Bell Area will be an exhibition contest for both schools – with the score and
statistics not counting towards any regular-season ledgers.

MEN’S SOCCER (10-4-1): Only postseason honors await Coyotes after season
ends prematurely
LAST WEEK: at Northwest (W 4-2); at Evergreen (L 3-2) –
season complete.
NO PLAYOFFS: The Albertson men’s soccer team had high hopes
coming into the 2004 season, with the nucleus of their squad which played for
the 2003 NAIA Region I championship returning.
Unfortunately for the Coyotes, the chance at a playoff run ended short
of their goal, as a 3-2 loss to Evergreen last Saturday left the team one-game
out of the playoffs.
COYOTES HAD BEEN A POSTSEASON
STAPLE: For the ‘Yotes, the postseason
had been almost automatic over the last 15 years. Since 1989, Coyote soccer had qualified for the playoffs in ten
of the previous 15 seasons – including four regional or district title
games. Albertson saw a string of five straight
playoff berths, and 6-of-7 ended with their loss on Saturday.
OUT OF THE REGIONAL POLL: The second-to-last NAIA Region I poll was released
on Tuesday, with Simon Fraser (Ranked No. 8 in the NAIA poll) sitting in the
No. 1 slot. Concordia, Evergreen,
Warner Pacific, and Western Baptist round out the top-five. The poll may adjust, however, as Evergreen
defeated Simon Fraser, 1-0, in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon.
REGIONAL TOURNAMENT UPDATE: Three of the four slots to the Region I tourney,
set for next weekend in Portland, have been determined. Concordia (CCC champ) and Evergreen (CCC
runner-up) will represent the Cascade Conference, while Simon Fraser (top
at-large) earns a spot with the highest Longo rating in the region. The final berth will be determined in a
Longo battle between Warner Pacific and Western Baptist – with Warner holding a
slight points edge heading into the cutoff date on Oct. 30.
END OF THE ROAD FOR SENIORS: The loss at Evergreen ended the careers of seven
Albertson seniors – Ryan Abo (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS), Drake
Jakovac (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS), John Reinschmidt (Mountain
Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS), Brad Brooks (Meridian, Idaho /
Meridian HS), Dustin Crim (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS), Skiff
Larson (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS), and Jason Southward (Hailey,
Idaho / Wood River HS). Of the
group, six of the seven played with the ‘Yotes for four years, all seven had
started games in their career, and four of the group were Academic
All-Americans.
RECORD BOOK: Careers over, both Ryan Abo and Jason Southward
now have solid spots in the career record book. Abo finished his Coyote career second all-time in assists and is
tied for the season-record for assists.
Southward ranks third in all-time goals scored and third in points in a
career.
LOOKING TO NEXT YEAR: Head coach Brian Smith has to be excited
with the group of players and talent that will return for the Coyotes in
2005. Eight players who were in the
starting line-up at one point this season will be back, including three-year
starter John Mitchell (Boise, Idaho / Boise State), and two-year
starters Joe Chandler (Nampa, Idaho / Univ. of Utah) and Ryan
Huber (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS).
ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS: The
2004 All-Cascade Conference team will be announced early next week, while the
All-Region I team to be selected in mid-November.
MORE INFORMATION: Updated information and statistics on the 2004 men’s soccer team can be found on Albertson men’s soccer official website at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/menssoccer.htm. Up-to-date Cascade Conference standings can be found online at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/msoccer/stats/standings.htm.
WOMEN’S SOCCER (1-16): Lady
‘Yotes season over, club looking ahead to 2005 season
LAST WEEK: vs. No. 6 Concordia (L 5-2); vs. Evergreen (L
3-1) – season complete
SEASON COMPLETE: With losses last week to Concordia and Evergreen,
the 2004 women’s soccer season came to a close at Albertson College. Unfortunately, the squad had a couple of
dubious marks on the season – setting new school records for consecutive losses
and losses to start a season, along with equaling the worst record in program
history. Despite the woes, the Lady
‘Yotes were a much improved club at the end of the season, giving hope that
with 14 of the 15 players returning for 2005, things will improve.
PLAYOFF PICTURE: Believe it or not, the 2004 playoffs have begun,
and two teams have already been eliminated.
On Wednesday, Concordia shutout Southern Oregon, 1-0, and Western
Baptist topped Evergreen, 3-1 – both advancing to Saturday’s CCC championship
in Portland. Both teams, along with
Simon Fraser and Carroll should advance to the NAIA Region I tournament.
COYOTES TOP CONCORDIA (FOR 86
MINUTES): Fans missing the first four
minutes of last Friday’s Albertson-Concordia women's soccer match may have
thought the Lady 'Yotes had upset the No. 6 ranked team in NAIA soccer.
However, the league leading Cavaliers scored four goals in the first 224
seconds of the match, topping the hosts, 5-2.
Teresa Flynn took a cross from Jennifer Hughes just 21 seconds into the
match and flicked home the first Concordia goal. Just 26 seconds later,
Amy Jackson slotted home a Haley Jones cross to make it 2-0, and less than two
minutes into the match, the Coyotes knocked one into their own net for an own
goal, and a 3-0 deficit. After trailing
5-0, the 'Yotes began to chip away at the great Concordia wall, as Laura
Fink (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) headed home a Kaylie Aaker
(Hailey, Idaho / Wood River HS) cross in the 37th minute to get
Albertson on the board. The Coyotes would hold their own in the second
half, breaking through in the 82nd minute, as leading scorer Jaime Peoples
(Kuna, Idaho / Kuna HS) flicked home a Lindsey Russell Idaho
Falls, Idaho / Idaho Falls HS) free kick.
END OF THE ROAD VS. EVERGREEN:
Alisha White factored on all three
Evergreen goals, as the playoff-bound Geoducks defeated Albertson College, 3-1,
Saturday afternoon in the Lady 'Yotes women's soccer finale at Symms
Field. White assisted on Evergreen's
first goal, then scored two tallies, including the game winner, as the Geoducks
headed to the Cascade Conference Tournament winners of six-straight. Albertson started quickly - scoring in the
sixth-minute, as Lindsay Russell bent a corner kick into the net for her second
goal of the season. The Coyotes would
run a season-best opponent scoreless streak to 102 minutes, before Lena Ishii
flicked home a touch from White in the 34th minute to tie the score. White would steal a ball in the 'Yotes zone
four minutes before halftime, and blast a shot in the net for lead. She
added an insurance goal nine minutes into the second half, chipping into the
twine to complete the scoring.
ALL-CONFERENCE, ALL-REGION: Next week, the All-Cascade Conference team will be
announced by the nine league coaches, followed by the All-NAIA Region I team.
THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS: The
Albertson soccer teams would like to thank the sponsors who will made the 2004
media guide a success – Carmody Real Estate, Sport Shoppe, Fairview Service
Center TuneTech, Idaho Power, Domino’s Pizza, Intermountain Community Bank,
