SOCCER: All-Conference
Teams announced
ALL-CCC TEAMS NAMED: The Cascade Conference
named their men’s and women’s soccer All-Star teams on Wednesday, with six
Albertson College men and one woman earning accolades. On the men’s side, senior Drake Jakovac
was named to the First-Team for the third consecutive season. The defender is one of the top marking backs
in the entire region. Joining him on
the First-Team is senior Ryan Abo, who earns the award for the
second-straight year. Abo led the
‘Yotes with six assists this season and ranks second all-time with 36
assists. Both Jakovac and Abo were NAIA
All-Americans in 2003. Four ‘Yotes were
named to the Second-Team – all first time selections. Junior goalkeeper Ryan Huber earned honors after recording
four shutouts and a 1.37 goals against average. Midfielders Mitch White and Tyler Seaman earned
awards, along with freshman striker Michael Delgado. White led Albertson with nine goals, Delgado
was right behind him with seven goals, while Seaman was a defensive stalwart
before having his season cut short before with a knee injury. Joe Gjertsen of Evergreen was named CCC
Player of the Year, while Dan Birkey was named Coach of the Year after leading
Concordia to the league crown. On the
women’s side, the lone Albertson player selected to the team was freshman
striker Jaime Peoples. The
youngster from Kuna led the Lady ‘Yotes with six goals this season.
VOLLEYBALL: Lady
‘Yotes put 13-game home win streak on the line against OIT and Southern Oregon
LAST WEEK: vs. Lewis-Clark State (W 3-0); at Eastern Oregon
(W 3-2)
COMING UP: vs. Oregon Tech, Friday, 7 p.m.; vs. No. 21
Southern Oregon, Saturday, 7 p.m.
‘YOTES HOT HOME STREAK: With a sweep of Lewis-Clark State last Thursday,
the Coyote volleyball team has now won 13 consecutive games in the J.A.
Albertson Activities Center. Albertson
has not lost on their home court since an October 25, 2003 loss to Concordia. The Lady ‘Yotes, who are 9-0 at home, tied school-record
for consecutive home wins to start a season, set during the 1999 campaign.
COYOTES STAY PAT IN REGIONAL
POLL: Despite having won 11 of their
last 12 matches, the Lady ‘Yotes continue to slowly move up in the NAIA Region
I Top-10 poll. This week, Albertson climbed
one spot to No. 4 in the weekly poll. Carroll
(No. 17 in NAIA) remains the No. 1 club, followed by Southern Oregon (No. 21), Montana
Tech, and the ‘Yotes. Northwest, Concordia,
Oregon Tech, Western Baptist, Montana State-Northern, and Rocky Mountain round
out the top-ten.
LAST TIME IN THE NATIONAL
POLL: Albertson last received votes
in the NAIA poll during the 2001 season – a year after making their lone
National Tournament appearance. The
‘Yotes began 2001 ranked No. 15 in the preseason poll, dropped to No. 19 in the
first regular-season poll, and have not been ranked since.
COYOTES IN THE PLAYOFFS: The Lady ‘Yotes clinched their sixth-consecutive
postseason nearly three weeks ago. Not
only did Albertson sew up a berth in the Cascade Conference tournament, but all
six slots in the weekend of madness have been determined. Southern Oregon, Northwest, the ‘Yotes,
Western Baptist, Oregon Tech, and Concordia all have earned berths in the
tournament, set for Nov. 12-13. The
site of the event will be determined by the first-place team in the league, who
will also host the six-team NAIA Region I tournament on Nov. 18-20.
PLAYING FOR SEEDING: This weekend’s regular-season finales will
determine the seeding and location of the Cascade Conference tournament. Albertson has yet to be eliminated from the
championship race – but it is a longshot.
The ‘Yotes must sweep Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon – including beating
Southern in three games. SOU must lose
their match at Eastern Oregon on Friday, and Northwest must be swept on the
road by Western Baptist and Concordia.
If all of this occurs, the Coyotes would be tied with Southern atop the
league and win the tiebreaker (4-3 games won advantage over the Raiders), with
Albertson hosting the CCC and Region I tournaments in Caldwell.
PLAYING FOR SEEDING, PART 2: One win by the Lady ‘Yotes this weekend locks up
at least the No. 3 seed in the six-team CCC fracas – which would force
Albertson to play a first-round loser-out game at the conference tourney. If Albertson were to win both matches this
weekend and Northwest lose a pair, the Lady ‘Yotes would move into the No. 2
spot – which would guarantee a first-round bye in the CCC tournament.
COYOTES DEFEAT LC-STATE FOR
FIRST TIME IN CALDWELL: The freshman block tandem of Anne Parker
(Pocatello, Idaho / Century HS) and Katie Hogue (Sparks, Nev.
/ Reed HS) combined for 16 blocks last Thursday, as the Albertson
volleyball team extended its home win streak to 13 with a 30-21, 30-25, 30-21
victory over Lewis-Clark State. Parker
had seven kills and seven block assists - many of them in Games 1 and 2, as the
Coyotes defeated LC-State for the first time in Caldwell. Hogue had only
four kills, but had a stuff block and eight block assists to help the Albertson
cause. Two-time reigning NAIA Region I
Player of the Week, Ashlea Thornton (Glendora, Calif. / Cal Baptist),
continued her hot play, leading all players with 13 kills and nine digs - to go
along with a .400 attack percentage. Erin Cherrington (Granby, Colo. / Middle Park HS, who had won the past two Cascade Conference
Setter of the Week awards, had 41 assists and four aces on the night. The Warriors, who advanced to last season's
NAIA Region I title game, were led by the 11 kills of Amanda Browne, but were
hurt by 12 receiving errors on Albertson serves.
EASTERN ENDS ONE STREAK
AGAINST ‘YOTES, BUT ALBERTSON WINS IN THE END: Albertson won their
seventh match in a row and extended their winning streak to 19-straight against
Eastern Oregon, topping the Mountaineers 23-30, 30-23, 30-21, 26-30, 15-10 in
Quinn Colesium. Ashlea Thornton recorded
21 kills and 11 digs in the win for the Coyotes, who completed their road
portion of the regular-season. After
Eastern ran out to a 16-4 lead in their Game 1 win, Albertson rallied.
After winning Game 2, the Coyotes broke a 12-12 tie in the middle game with a
7-0 run for the win. The Mounties, however, would not go away, using
a 6-0 spurt to break a 23-23 tie in Game 4 to send the match to a
decider. Albertson would rattle off the final five points for the win, as
Thornton spiked two balls in the run. Kahli
Mann (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS) had 26 digs for the 'Yotes in the
win, while Kaki McLean led Eastern with 24 kills. The Mountaineers did
end the 20-consecutive games won by Albertson in the series with their Game 1
win.
RECORD WATCH: The Albertson College individual single-season and
career top-ten lists are seeing some reshuffling, courtesy of the 2004 Lady
‘Yote volleyballers. Kahli Mann is
making a big splash, currently on pace to shatter the digs per game in a season
record, currently averaging 5.06 digs a game, well ahead of the 4.40 mark set
by Tara Daniel in 1997. Her 435 digs
this season is ninth on the all-time single-season list, with two
regular-season matches and at least one playoff game to go. Mann has also climbed into the all-time
top-ten in aces with 109, tied with Brecia Gamett in fifth-place, and is tenth
all-time in digs (806). Erin
Cherrington has moved into fourth-place on the career assist list with 1,797,
while her single-season average of 12.52 assists per game on pace to set a new
school record. Rounding out the group is Jenn Luchini (Cataldo, Idaho
/ Kellogg HS), who ranks tenth all-time in aces with 93.
SENIOR NIGHT: Saturday night is the final regular-season home
game for four seniors on the 2004 Lady ‘Yote volleyball team. Ashlea Thornton will be finishing her second
season at Albertson, while Kahli Mann, Jenn Luchini, and Nicole Rollins (Heyburn,
Idaho / Burley HS) will be ending their four-year careers in the Purple and
Gold.
PLAYOFF PREVIEW THIS WEEKEND: Two of the teams that have clinched a playoff spot
head to Caldwell this weekend. Oregon
Tech topped the Lady ‘Yotes in a five-game marathon last month. The Owls (13-10, 10-6 CCC) have struggled on
the road against CCC playoff teams (0-4), but have a potent attack, led by Jen
Cueto (2.8 k/g, 3.2 d/g). OIT trails
the all-time series, 15-6. Conference
leading Southern Oregon heads to town on Saturday, hoping to clinch
their second-straight league title. The
Raiders (17-5, 14-2) have been the class of the CCC, led by Kristin Ferris (3.7
k/g, 3.5 d/g) and Boise State transfer Jess Childress (3.3 k/g). Southern has dominated the series, winning
34-of-39 meetings, including a 3-1 win over the Coyotes in September.

CROSS COUNTRY: Coyotes
set to compete in Regional meet with national berths on the line
LAST WEEK: Idle
COMING UP: at Cascade Conference/NAIA Region I Preview Meet,
Lents Park, Portland, Ore., Saturday – Women’s 5,000-meters at 10:15 a.m.
(PST), Men’s 8,000-meters at 11 a.m. (PST)
IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THIS: For the Albertson College cross country team, this
weekend’s Cascade Conference / NAIA Region I Meet is for all the marbles. Results throughout the 2004 running season
have been thrown out the window – only the 18-28 minutes of heart-pounding
sweat stand between the ‘Yotes and the finish line. A good performance, and a chance at the NAIA National
Championships, a poor performance – and the runners have to look forward to
track season.
CHANCES ON THE MEN’S SIDE: For the ‘Yotes, improvement has been steady
throughout the season – especially since transfer David Flueckiger (Herisou,
Switzerland / Va. Commonwealth) joined the group in mid-October. Flueckiger looks to be a near-lock to earn
one of the five at-large berths to the NAIA meet – as long as he finishes the
meet cleanly. A trio of others hope to move
into that top-five group in the region, and a chance to head to Louisville,
Ky. Jacob Haas (Portland,
Ore. / Eastern Oregon Univ.) has been the most consistent of the runners
for the Coyotes, although freshmen Jesse Chlebeck (Eagan, Minn. /
Eagan HS) and Tyler Hopper (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS) are
rounding into shape after battling injuries all season long.
MEN’S TEAMS TO BEAT: Two Canadian schools look to be the class of the
event – as both Simon Fraser (No. 2 in NAIA poll) and British Columbia (No. 11)
have deep teams. Three other Cascade
Conference teams hope to make a splash big enough to earn an at-large berth to
the National Championships – Southern Oregon (No. 9), Eastern Oregon (No. 17),
and Warner Pacific (No. 23). For the
Coyotes, a sixth-place finish would not be out of the question, but that would
mean topping both Lewis-Clark State (who has beaten the ‘Yotes twice in meets),
and Oregon Tech (who is 1-1 against Albertson).
CHANCES ON THE WOMEN’S SIDE: The
Lady ‘Yotes have a chance to qualify an at-large runner for the NAIA
Championships – as Shannon Edwards (Sherwood, Ore. / Eastern Oregon
Univ.) hopes to have a good day.
Edwards struggled over the 5,000-meter course in Portland three weeks
ago, but hopes solid training with have her in the top-five of the at-large
runners in the end. Albertson will have
a six-runner team competing for the first time in nearly a month, as injuries
have helped.
WOMEN’S TEAMS TO BEAT: In
talking with head coach Pat McCurry, the Lady ‘Yotes have a shot to
finish in the Top-8 in the 12-team field.
“I believe we have a solid chance to defeat Western Baptist, Evergreen,
and Westminster at the Regional Championships,” said the head coach. A deep women’s field is ahead of Albertson –
namely Canadian stalwarts Simon Fraser (No. 1) and British Columbia (No.
5). Also in the bunch to earn automatic
berths to the national meet include Lewis-Clark State (No. 13), Eastern Oregon
(No. 17), and Northwest (No. 19), while both Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech
have been running well as of late.
ABOUT CROSS COUNTRY: Cross
country is a bit different than most sports – similar to golf, where the lowest
score is the best. Teams compete in
races, with the top-five times on a squad counting toward a team score. The place a runner finishes in the race
equals that many points (third-place is three points, 12th is 12
points), with the team with the fewest points (the squad with the highest
finishers) winning the team event.

Updated information on the 2004 cross country team, including meet-by-meet
results and top times can be found on the Albertson cross country official
website at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/xc.htm.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Coyotes to open Taco
Bell Arena on Friday night in exhibition against Boise State
COMING UP: at Boise State, next Friday, 7:30 p.m.
RADIO: All regular-season men’s basketball games will be
broadcast live in the Treasure Valley on 1490 KCID-AM, the “Home of the
Coyotes.” Mike Safford Jr. begins his
fourth season as the play-by-play man for Albertson basketball, with the
pregame show beginning 20 minutes prior to every game. Coyote basketball, all season long, on 1490
KCID-AM. The game will also be carried
by Boise State live on 670 KBOI-AM with Paul J. Schneider and Larry Polowski.
COYOTES TO PLAY FIRST GAME IN
NEWLY NAMED PAVILION: Friday night, the
2004-05 Albertson men’s basketball team opens the season with an exhibition
game at Boise State. The game marks the
first contest played in the newly named Taco Bell Arena, and is the first for
the Broncos (23-10), fresh off their second-round appearance in the NIT. BSU returns five players from that club,
including returning starters Jermaine Blackburn (13.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg), Coby Karl
(9.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg), and Jason Ellis (8.7 ppg, 9.0 rpg). The Broncos were picked to finish sixth in
the Western Athletic Conference preseason poll.
HISTORY VS. BOISE STATE: Although the game does not count in the record
book, there is a solid past between the teams.
The Coyotes lost a lopsided 91-49 decision to the Broncos last season,
thanks to a 10-for-16 shooting performance by BSU from outside the arc. Albertson did give their D-I neighbors a
scare in 2002, losing a six-point lead in the final four minutes, as Boise
State topped the ‘Yotes, 52-50.
Overall, there have been 21 meetings between the Coyotes and Broncos
since 1950 – but some of the history counts, some of it does not. It is only the fifth meeting between “Boise
State” and “Albertson” – eight meetings were Boise State vs. the College of
Idaho, and eight meetings were between Boise Junior College and the College of
Idaho. BSU also does not recognize the
nine meetings prior to the 1968-69 season, while the institution was known as
Boise JC.

‘YOTES
RANKED #21 TO START SEASON: Fresh
off their Round of 16 finish at the NAIA Division II national tournament, the
Albertson men’s basketball team was ranked No. 21 in the preseason NAIA
Division II Top-25 poll. The ‘Yotes
were one of four Cascade Conference teams in the group – Oregon Tech (No. 1),
Southern Oregon (No. 16), and Western Baptist (No. 34).
PRESEASON
RANKINGS BECOMING FAMILIAR: For
the fourth consecutive season, the Coyotes have been ranked to start the
season. Last season, Albertson began
the year No. 12 and ascended as high as No. 3 in the nation. During the 2002-03 season, the ‘Yotes began
at No. 15, fell out of the poll, then rebounded for a second-round appearance
at the NAIA tournament. The 2001-02
team began the year at No. 8, but injuries plagued the team, as it failed to
get out of the Cascade Conference tournament.
The last team not to be ranked to start a season was the 2000-01 club, Mark
Owen’s first as head coach, a team that eventually advanced to the Elite
Eight of the NAIA Tournament.
BOISE
STATE GAME MARKED AS AN EXHIBITION: Thanks
to a new rule by the NAIA, men’s and women’s basketball teams are now allowed
one exhibition contest as part of their 32-game schedule. The Coyotes have decided to have the game
next Friday against Boise State be designated as an exhibition contest. The result of the game, along with any
statistics, will not count in the regular-season records.
OWEN
NEARING 100 WINS: Heading into the
2004-05 season, head coach Mark Owen is two wins away from No. 100. In his first four years as head coach, Coach
O has a 98-42 overall record.

basketball program, head to the official site Coyote Basketball: www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/mensbasketball.htm.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Lady ‘Yotes set to open
season Friday at Carroll Classic
COMING UP: at Carroll College Classic, Helena, Mont. – vs.
Carroll, Friday, 8 p.m.; vs. Montana State-Northern, Saturday, 6 p.m.
RADIO AND INTERNET: All nine women’s CCC road games will be broadcast
live this season on 1490 KCID-AM with Mike Safford Jr. calling the action. In addition, all home games (along with the
nine CCC road tilts) will be broadcast
live on the internet, courtesy of the Albertson Athetic Website.
LADY ‘YOTES SET TO HEAD TO
MONTANA: A nine-hour bus trip awaits
the Lady ‘Yote hoopsters as the tenth anniversary of women’s basketball at
Albertson College kicks off on Friday.
It will be the third time in five seasons that the Coyotes open their
season at the Carroll Classic in Helena.
During the 2002-03 season, the squad split two games in Big Sky country.
CHANGE IN TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE:
Originally, the Albertson women’s
basketball team was to have played host Carroll College and Montana Tech at
this weekend’s Carroll Classic.
However, due to a conflict in scheduling, the host school was forced to
change the games – Albertson meeting Montana State-Northern on the tournament’s
second day.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The tough opening trip for the Lady ‘Yotes opens
against one of the more improving teams in the NAIA Division I. Carroll College advanced to the NAIA
Tournament for the first time in school history last season, and begins the
2004-05 campaign ranked No. 16 in the nation.
The Fighting Saints (4-0 this season, 28-7 in 2003-04) have had an
impressive start to the new year, including a gaudy 113-29 win at home over
Malaspina of Canada. Carroll is led by
returning All-America forward Emily Woody (14.8 ppg, 9.3 rpg), along with
shooting guard, Andrea Hall (11.2 ppg, .430 3FG%), an All-Frontier Conference pick. It is the eighth meeting between the teams,
with Carroll holding a 5-2 advantage – having won the last three meetings. Saturday’s new opponent is Montana
State-Northern, who had a 21-13 record during the 2003-04 season. The Skylights (3-1 this season), who lost
73-52 at Regina on Saturday, are led by a pair of All-Frontier Conference
selections – 6-3 center Megan Valgardson (15.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and guard Jaci
Heny (15.8 ppg, .467 3FG%). It is only
the second meeting between the two teams, as Northern topped the Lady ‘Yotes,
86-81, at the Carroll Classic in 2000.
CASCADE CONFERENCE COACHES
VOTE LADY ‘YOTES SIXTH: The Cascade Conference
women’s basketball preseason poll was released earlier this week, with the
league coaches voting Albertson College sixth out of the ten team league. Leading the balloting was Warner Pacific,
one of two teams to represent the CCC at last season’s NAIA Division II
national tournament.
COYOTES TO DEEM ONE GAME AN
EXHIBITION: Thanks to a new NAIA guideline
that allows men’s and women’s basketball teams a chance to designate one game
per season as an exhibition, the Lady ‘Yotes will take advantage of the rule to
have one of their 32 games be a non-counter.
The Albertson-Boise State meeting on November 9 in the newly named Taco
Bell Area will be an exhibition contest for both schools – with the score and
statistics not counting towards any regular-season ledgers.

SWIMMING: Coyotes
struggle at Logger Classic, have two weeks off before next dual meet
LAST WEEK: at Logger Classic, Tacoma, Wash. – Men vs. Puget
Sound (L 127-14), Women vs. Puget Sound (L 149-11)
COMING UP: at Seattle University, 11/20, 1 p.m. (PST)
‘YOTES LEARN QUICKLY ABOUT
COLLEGE SWIMMING: Squaring off against
one of the premier small-college aquatic programs in the Northwest, the
Albertson College swim team made their collegiate debut last Saturday in the
Logger Classic. Although the team
scoring was lopsided, the Coyotes learned much about themselves and got their
first official times to build on.
WHY THE SCORES WERE LOPSIDED: The difference in the meet was the fact that Puget
Sound had two to almost three times as many competitors on both the men’s and
women’s side than Albertson – while the Coyotes competed in just 12 of the 24
events.
ABOUT THE COACH: A
familiar face is the head coach of the Coyote swimmers. Mike Shines is the first head coach
of its new intercollegiate swim program, having served as the Director of
Aquatics and swim instructor at the J.A. Albertson Aquatics Center on the
Albertson campus for the last eight years. He has also served as the
institution's strength coach for the past 12 seasons.
HOW SWIMMING SCORING WORKS: Outside of invitational meets (multiple teams),
the Coyotes will compete in dual meets against Seattle University and Lewis
& Clark College. These short-course
duals will have 13 events taking place.
Scoring for these events are based on how many lanes are utilized in an
event. If six-or-more lanes are used,
relay finishes will receive 11-4-2 points (11 for first, 4 for second, 2 for
third), with only the top-two relays from each team receiving points. Individual races will receive 9-4-3-2-1
points, with the top three on each team scoring points. If five-or-less lanes are used, the top
relay receives seven points, while in individual races, first-place receives
five points, second receives three, and third one (with only the top-two
finishers on a team scoring). At the
end of the meet, the points are tallied, with the squad with the most points
posting the win.
HOW THE ‘YOTES GET TO
NATIONALS: For Albertson swimmers to
qualify for the NAIA Championships, it is a bit different than most
sports. Prior to each season, the NAIA
posts provisional times in each individual event or relay that competitors or
teams must best to be eligible for nationals.
If a relay or individual passes that time, they are eligible to compete
in the national meet. To view the
qualifying standards, go to http://www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/swim/standards.htm.
MEN’S RESULTS: The top result for the Coyotes was in the 50-meter
freestyle, where Blake Bower (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) was
less than two seconds off the NAIA Provisional Qualifying time. The freshman covered the distance in 27.19
seconds, good enough for sixth-place, while placing third in the 100-free
(1:01.00). Other top finishers for the
‘Yotes were Chad Longo (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho / North Idaho CC) in
the 100-meter backstroke (1:16.44) and Chris Sherman (Boise, Idaho /
Centennial HS) in the 100-meter butterfly (1:18.31) – who both had
third-place finishes.
WOMEN’S RESULTS: The women’s team was competing against the
defending Northwest Conference champions, and against nine swimmers that
qualified for the NCAA Championships.
That said, Sara Bates (East Wenatchee, Wash. / Eastmont HS) was
able to lock down a fifth-place finish in the 50-meter free (33.48), while La
Chele Wieting (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) and Aubrey Bower (Caldwell,
Idaho / Home School) finished fourth and fifth respectively in the
100-meter breaststroke.
PRACTICE TIME AHEAD: The Coyote swim team will have two weeks to
prepare for their next meet, a short-course dual against NCAA Division II power
Seattle University. The meet will be at
Seattle’s Connolly Center pool on Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. (PST)
