GREEN HEADED TO NATIONALS: Freshman John
Green (Pleasanton, Calif. / Foothill HS) had a banner day on
Saturday, establishing a pair of school-records in the ‘Yotes dual meet at
Pacific Lutheran. Green took home
victories in both the 50-yard freestyle (22.51) and the 100-yard freestyle
(49.49) – with both times meeting the NAIA national meet provisional qualifying
standard. His 50-free time is the 20th-best
in the NAIA this season, while his 100-free mark is the 19th-fastest in the
NAIA.
RELAYS SHAVE TIME OFF MARKS: The Coyote
men continued to improve as the national meet approaches, setting new marks in
the 200-free and 200-medley relays. The
200-medley relay smashed the school-record in a time of 1:47.86 – the ninth-fastest
time in the NAIA. The 200-free relay
currently has the tenth-best mark in the NAIA.
NAIA QUALIFIERS: The following are the Coyote
automatic qualifiers for the NAIA Swim Meet, to be held in St. Charles, Mo. in March

INDOOR TRACK: Solid effort at opening meet, ‘Yotes
off to Seattle to run at the University of Washington
LAST WEEK: at Hampton Inn Indoor
Invitational, Nampa
COMING UP: at University of Washington Indoor
Invitational, Seattle, Wash., Friday-Sunday.
SMALL GROUP RUNS WELL IN NAMPA: The
Albertson College track team opened up the 2006 indoor season Saturday
afternoon at the Hampton Inn Invitational at the Jackson's Indoor Facility,
hosted by Boise State. Three men's
runners competed in the one-mile race, as true freshman Sam Hardy (Eagle,
Idaho / Eagle HS) led the Coyote contingent with a fifth-place finish in
4:26.92. The women had five runners
compete - with freshman Jayne Saunders (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS) leading
the way with a ninth-place finish in the 400-meter race (1:03.46).
GREAT CHANCE TO QUALIFY FOR INDOOR NATIONALS THIS WEEKEND: The bar is
raised higher this weekend, as the Coyotes head to Seattle for the University
of Washington Indoor Invitational at the Dempsey Indoor Facility on the UW
campus. The meet will serve as a
launching pad for the long distance specialists Jacob Haas (Portland,
Ore. / Eastern Oregon U.) and Shannon Edwards (Sherwood, Ore. /
Eastern Oregon U.), who will look to establish NAIA national meet
qualifying times in the 5,000 meters.
Also looking to crack the national list is 2005 All-American David
Fluckiger (Herisou, Switz. / Va. Commonwealth U.), who will compete
in the mile.

ALPINE SKIING: Women take first and second at
Mount Hood, Men struggle on Sunday
LAST WEEK: at Northwest Collegiate Ski
Conference Qualifier #1 at Mount Hood Ski Bowl – Saturday – Men 2nd, Women 2nd;
Sunday – Men 8th, Women 1st.
COMING UP: at Northwest Collegiate Ski
Conference Qualifier #2 at Crystal Mountain Resort, Saturday and Sunday.
WOMEN SKI WELL IN SEASON OPENER: The
Albertson women’s alpine team got off to a rousing start at the Mount Hood Ski
Bowl last weekend, losing the opening giant slalom race by 25-hundreths of a
second to rival British Columbia, but rebounded for a championship on Sunday by
a two-second margin. Molly Bullard
had a solid weekend to pace the women, recording a third-place finish on
Saturday, followed by a fourth-place finish on Sunday. Kelly Farmin also had a pair of
top-ten finishes for Albertson, scoring a fifth-place finish on Saturday and a
eighth-place finish on Sunday.
MEN OPEN STRONG, STRUGGLE ON SUNDAY: Things got
off to a great start for the men’s alpine team, placing second in the giant
slalom opener on Saturday – thanks to a third-place finish from Matt Sylvester. However, the ‘Yotes had their problems on
Sunday, as only two racers were able to complete the course upright, with
Sylvester finishing fourth, as Albertson finished eighth out of nine teams.
STANDINGS: Men – 1. British Columbia, 2.
Puget Sound, 3. University of Washington; Women – 1. Albertson College, 1.
British Columbia, 3. Puget Sound.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (8-11, 5-5 CCC): Coyotes host trio of games, set to play six of final eight games on home
court
LAST WEEK: at Corban (L 98-92), at Concordia
(W 93-78)

vs. Evergreen State, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.; vs. Concordia, Monday, 7:30 p.m.
RADIO AND INTERNET: All 27 regular-season men’s
basketball games will be broadcast live in the Treasure Valley on 1490 KCID-AM,
the “Home of the Coyotes.” Mike Safford
Jr. begins his fifth season as the play-by-play man for Albertson basketball,
with the pregame show beginning 20 minutes prior to every game. All games can also be heard live on the
Albertson Athletic Website at www.collegeofidaho.edu/media/audio/YoteSports.asx.
CCC AND NATIONAL POLL: The Cascade Conference
men’s basketball coaches’ poll was released on Monday and saw changes at the
top. Southern Oregon took over the top
spot, with Oregon Tech moving to No. 2 after losing Saturday at Northwest. Warner Pacific remained No. 3, followed by Northwest,
Eastern Oregon, and Albertson. Southern
moved to No. 3 in the NAIA Division II poll, OIT dropped to No. 8, while Warner
Pacific remained at No. 15 for the third-straight week. Northwest was third on the list of others
receiving votes, while both Eastern and the ‘Yotes received minimal votes in
the poll.
GAME MOVED TO JANUARY 30: The make-up game between
Albertson and Concordia (originally scheduled for Dec. 20, but postponed due to
travel problems with the Cavaliers) will be played on Monday night, at the J.A.
Albertson Activities Center. All
tickets for the Dec. 20 contest (Game 7 in the season ticket package) will be
honored.
INJURY REPORT CONTINUES TO IMPROVE: The ‘Yotes
did not miss a beat offensively on their trip to the Willamette Valley, as
leading scorer Ike Stafford (Auburn, Wash. / Salt Lake CC) showed
no ill effects from a deep knee bruise sustained a week earlier at Oregon
Tech. Albertson did play without senior
Derek Brown (Las Vegas, Nev. / Desert Pines HS), opting to rest a
severe high-ankle sprain. Brown has
resumed practice with the club this week and is expected to play this
weekend. Post J.R. Maggard (Caldwell,
Idaho / Vallivue HS) had his cast removed from his broken ankle last
Wednesday and will be in a walking boot for five more days. The sophomore is hopeful to return prior to
the Cascade Conference tournament.
BROWN HOPEFUL TO TIE RECORD AT HOME: Despite
seeing a 118-consecutive games played streak end at Oregon Tech, Derek Brown is
excited for a chance to tie a school record this weekend at home. Brown is just three games behind the
school-record of 121 games played, set by Justin McCarthy (2001-04) and Dan
Hardee (1987-90) – and if healthy, would tie the mark on Monday against
Concordia. He has also moved into
seventh-place on the all-time list for steals (127) and assists (260) in a
career.
BLEACHER BASHING LEADS TO TURNAROUND AT CONCORDIA: Nearly 12
minutes had elapsed off the first half clock on Saturday night and Coyote head
coach Mark Owen was not a happy camper – ACI had dug itself a 34-14
deficit. So after watching Concordia
connect on ten-consecutive field goal attempts to take the big lead, Owen
called a timeout – taking his team around the bench to the second row of the
bleachers. “I told the team that they
were embarrassing themselves out there with the lack of emotion and effort,”
said the sixth-year head coach. “I
think the kids were taken back by the timeout – and I think we played some of
our best basketball of the season the rest of the game.” The ‘Yotes would end the period on a 24-5
run, making nine of their final ten shots, to take a 46-45 halftime lead, which
would end up a 93-78 victory.
SIX IS A CROWD: The ‘Yotes had six players score
in double figures in the Concordia victory, the first time in over a year that
the squad had a six-pack score ten or more points. The last time it occurred was also against Concordia in an 84-61
victory over the Cavs on Jan. 10, 2005.
FRIED HAS CAREER NIGHT: The ‘Yotes got a huge lift
off the bench on Saturday from redshirt freshman Justin Fried (Middleton,
Idaho / Middleton HS). The guard
played a career-high 24 minutes, making 6-of-9 shots from the floor, including
four three-pointers, as part of his 16-point night. Fried had scored a total of 18 points all season coming into the
game and had made just 2-of-18 three’s before the outburst.
CHAMP INTO THE STARTING SLOT: Coach
Owen made a change in the Coyote starting line-up on Saturday, deciding to go
with a four-guard, one-post system.
That allowed true freshman Bryan Champ (Boise, Idaho / Borah
HS) to start his first collegiate game, and the youngster did not
disappoint, leading the team with seven rebounds. Champ had a big weekend, scoring a career-high 15 points against
Corban on Friday – and has scored in double figures in each of the last three
games, converting 14-of-22 field goals during that stretch.
IN THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT: As a team,
the Coyotes lead the Cascade Conference and rank No. 3 in the NAIA Division II
in three-point field goals made per game (9.6). Individually, Josh Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS)
leads the CCC in ranks No. 3 in the nation in free throw percentage (.896),
while Ike Stafford ranks No. 4 nationally in three-point field goal percentage
(.500).
TOUGH LOSS AT CORBAN: Eric Fiegi scored 41 points
and had 15 rebounds, including the go-ahead free throw inside the final minute,
as Corban College held off Albertson College, 98-92, Friday night in the C.E.
Jeffers Sports Center. The Warriors built
a 71-61 second half lead, but watched as the Coyotes rallied, taking a 90-89 edge
on an Ike Stafford lay-up with 1:29 left. However, Ben Sisler took a
Fiegi pass and converted a three-point play to give Corban the lead back.
After Dan McFaul (Moses Lake, Wash. / Big Bend CC) tied the score
with a lay-up, Fiegi hit 1-of-2 free throws as the hosts scored the final six
points of the game.
McFAUL TEARING UP THE CCC: Despite
the loss at Corban, Dan McFaul had his best offensive game in his career,
scoring 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds – his fourth double-double of the
year. The senior has turned up the
pressure on opponents during league play, averaging 15 points and eight
rebounds per game, while making 53-percent of his field goal attempts. McFaul currently leads the league in
CCC-only counters in offensive rebounds per game, pulling down over three per
contest.
REMATCH WITH SURGING NORTHWEST: On of the
hottest teams in the Cascade Conference heads to Caldwell on Friday night, as Northwest
wants to keep the pressure on front-running Southern Oregon. The Eagles (15-6, 7-4 CCC) won a home
overtime tilt with Eastern Oregon on Dec. 29 and haven’t missed a beat since,
winning 6-of-7 games, including an 86-78 win over the Coyotes. Northwest is led by transfer Chris Keller (15.9
ppg, 3.8 rpg, .441 3FG%), who scored 25 points, including six treys, in the win
over ACI. All-CCC forward Aaron Sawyer
(14.7 ppg, 7.5 rpg) is a load inside, as is sophomore Stephen Ishmael (11.9
ppg, 6.5 rpg) – who has been battling injuries as of late. It is the 20th all-time meeting between the
teams, with the Coyotes holding a 13-6 edge.
CLASH OF STYLES ON SATURDAY: At the
major college level, this would be Duke vs. Princeton – but Saturday, its
fast-paced Albertson against methodical Evergreen State. The Geoducks (6-15, 2-9) have lost three
games in a row and have dropped eight of their last nine – averaging just 51
points per game in CCC play. Evergreen
has struggled from the outside all season long – making just 28-percent of
their treys (just 21-percent during CCC play).
Defense has been the Clams story, however, as Evergreen has held
opponents below 60 points on 11 occasions this year. Pat Mattson (11.0 ppg) is the only Geoduck to average in double
figures, while post Thomas Cook (9.0 ppg, 7.5 rpg) has show flashes of
excellence. It is the 15th meeting
between the teams, with Albertson holding an 11-3 edge, including winning the
last eight in a row (including a 73-45 win in Olympia this year).
HEY LOOK, ITS CONCORDIA AGAIN: Nine days
will separate the Coyotes two games this season with Monday’s opponent, Concordia. The Cavs (12-9, 3-6) will be looking for
redemption after the ‘Yotes big rally on Saturday night. The Portland school has played just two CCC
road games, so the tilt in Caldwell will be a test – as CU has lost
6-of-9. Speedy point-guard Michael Lay
(18.5 ppg, 6.0 apg) and wing Alex Hartman (15.4 ppg, 5.6 rpg), each played well
last week vs. the Coyotes. ACI has won seven-straight
against Concordia and holds a 39-8 all-time series edge.
LEAGUE LEADERS: Scoring Average – Eric Fiegi (COR)
29.5, Shea Washington (SOU) 19.2, Michael Lay (CU) 18.5, Joshua Garrett (CAS)
18.5, Chris Lynn (COR) 17.0; Rebound Average – Fiegi 12.4, Jeff Williams (SOU)
8.6, Washington 8.6, Donny Woods (WPC) 7.6, Aaron Sawyer (NW) 7.5; Field Goal
Percentage – Washington .615, Tayo Cotton (CAS) .606, Bobby Lester (CU) .589, Kyle
Janke (EOU) .584, Feigi .569; Assist Average – Woods 6.2, Lay 6.2, Levell Hesia
(OIT) 5.2, Steve Farley (SOU) 4.7, Andre Lawrence (OIT) 4.5.
MORE INFORMATION ON THE COYOTES: For game stories, statistics, and information regarding the Albertson men’s basketball program, head to the official site Coyote Basketball: www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/mensbasketball.htm.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (11-10, 5-5 CCC): ‘Yotes hope to build off win at Concordia – play three games at home in
four nights
LAST WEEK: at No. 26 Corban (L 53-45), at
Concordia (W 65-53)
COMING UP: vs. Northwest, Friday, 5:30 p.m.;
vs. Evergreen State, Saturday, 5:30 p.m. ; vs. Concordia, Monday, 5:30 p.m.
RADIO AND INTERNET: All home Albertson College women’s
basketball games will be broadcast live on the internet, via the ACI athletic
website (www.collegeofidaho.edu/media/audio/YoteSports.asx). Mike Safford Jr. will have the play-by-play
on Friday and Monday night, student broadcast Jake McClean will call the action
on Saturday. In addition, all nine
women’s CCC road games will be broadcast live this season on 1490 KCID-AM.
CCC AND NATIONAL POLL: The Cascade Conference
women’s basketball coaches’ poll was released on Monday and remained pretty
much the same. Warner Pacific remained
No. 1 in the league, despite a non-conference loss at Northwest Christian,
while Corban remained at No. 2. Eastern
Oregon took over the No. 3 spot, followed by Oregon Tech, Albertson, and
Northwest. Warner Pacific remained in
the NAIA Top-25 at No. 24 this week, while Corban was listed first among “others
receiving votes.”
GAME MOVED TO JANUARY 30: The make-up game between
Albertson and Concordia (originally scheduled for Dec. 20, but postponed due to
travel problems with the Cavaliers) will be played on this Monday night,
January 30, at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center. All tickets for the Dec. 20 contest (Game 7 in the season ticket
package) will be honored.
ON THE INJURY FRONT: Fans should expect the return of
post Whitney Martin (Rupert, Idaho / Boise State U.) from a knee
injury this weekend. Martin was injured
in the final minute of the Dec. 6 game at Northwest Nazarene and has missed 11
games. “We are excited to have Whitney
Martin back for this weekend,” said head coach Reagan Rossi. “With the lack of depth at the post positions,
having Whit back will give us more options.”
Rossi believes that Martin will be able to play about ten minutes per
game, with that number to increase as she continues to rehab the knee.
COYOTES AMONG THE LOOPS BEST: The Lady ‘Yotes
pepper the upper echelon of the Cascade Conference statistical chart among
league-only tilts. Whitney Clark (Jerome,
Idaho / Northwest Nazarene U.) leads the loop in scoring in CCC games at a
16.4 points per game clip, while averaging a league-best 2.7 three-pointers
made per game. Kim Strunk (Twin
Falls, Idaho / Twin Falls HS) is averaging 10.2 rebounds per game in CCC
play – which is also tops in the league, while Angie Gribble (Boise,
Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) is on top of the league in steals per game,
averaging three a night in CCC action.
CLARK ON FIRE: After battling an early-season
stress fracture and plantar fasciitis in her foot, Whitney Clark has become a
key cog in the Coyote arsenal. The
sophomore has recorded eight consecutive double-figure scoring games, averaging
18 points per night during that period.
STRUNK TURNING INTO A REBOUND MACHINE: Senior Kim
Strunk has struggled recently from the field, but that is not hurting her work
on the glass. Though Strunk is 12-of-47
from the floor in the last five games, she is averaging nearly 13 rebounds per
game during that period. In fact, Strunk
has recorded 11-or-more boards in six-straight games – vaulting her to No. 4 in
the loop overall in rebound average.
TOUGH WEEKEND FOR SMOOT: After having her best
weekend of the season, post Desirae Smoot (Provo, Utah / Western
Wyoming CC) saw the other end of the spectrum in the Willamette
Valley. The senior was 0-for-10 from
the field and 3-for-6 from the foul line in the two games (after averaging 12
points and nine rebounds on the previous road trip).
OFFENSIVE WOES AT CORBAN: Corban College held
Albertson College to just 24-percent shooting from the floor, as the Warriors
used their stingy defense to stop the Lady 'Yotes, 53-45, Friday night in the
C.E. Jeffers Center. The Warriors overcame
a 24-20 second half deficit with a 9-0 run, holding Albertson without a field
goal for eight minute stretch. The Lady 'Yotes would close to 44-41
inside the final three minutes, but Jessica Steigleman hit the only trey of the
night for Corban to seal the win. Steigleman
had 15 points for the victors, while Whitney Clark led all scorers with 19
points. Kim Strunk added nine points and 12 rebounds for the Coyotes.
QUICK START LIFTS ‘YOTES PAST CONCORDIA: Albertson
College sprinted out to a 18-4 lead and never trailed, as the Lady 'Yotes
evened their Cascade Conference record at 5-5 with a 65-53 victory at Concordia
University on Saturday night. Fueled by
big games from transfers Jori Grady (Roseburg, Ore. / Umpqua CC) and
Whitney Clark, Albertson won for the eighth-straight time over the Cavaliers. Concordia closed to within six points late
in the game, however, a driving lay-up by Angie Gribble, and treys from Merilee
Caldwell (Pocatello, Idaho / Boise State U.) and Grady ended the
Cavs hopes. Grady led all scorers with
27 points, while Clark tallied 20, before fouling out with five minutes to
play.
65 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER: Looking throughout the 21
games this season, the number 65 stands out for the Lady ‘Yotes. When Albertson scores 65 or more points in a
game, they have posted an 8-1 record.
When the club fails to score 65 points, they are just 3-7.
NORTHWEST WANTS THEIR SECOND CRACK AT ACI: Albertson
opens up a final stretch of the season that sees them play six of their final
eight games at home with a Friday night encounter with Northwest. The Eagles (9-14, 5-6) are among a pack of four
teams (Eastern Oregon, ACI, Concordia, NW) that are battling for the final home
playoff game. Emilee Eisinger (17.0
ppg, 8.0 rpg) is having an outstanding sophomore season, leading the league in
scoring – including a 24 point, 11 rebound game in a 67-63 loss to the ‘Yotes
in December – the first win for Albertson in Kirkland since 2002. The Eagles average 21 turnovers a game – but
are not afraid to push the tempo, averaging 71 points a night in conference
play. It is the 23rd meeting between
the teams, with Albertson holding a 17-5 edge.
SLUMPING EVERGREEN TRYING TO GET ON TRACK: When the
Lady ‘Yotes met Saturday’s opponent, Evergreen State, the first time
this season, everything was rosy for the state school in Washington – a 3-1
start to the CCC season and just a game out of first. Since then, the Geoducks (5-15, 3-8) have fallen on hard times, losing
eight consecutive games by an average margin of 16. However, Evergreen’s talented duo of Jenny Olson (13.4 ppg, 8.8
rpg) and Rachel Ross (11.4 ppg, 7.4 rpg) can keep the Clams in games night in
and night out – but the team has struggled offensively, averaging just 51
points per game. Albertson dominated
play in a 63-44 win over Evergreen in December and holds a 15-2 all-time edge –
although the Geoducks defeated ACI last season, 52-47, in Caldwell.
HERE
COMES CONCORDIA: Just
nine days after the ‘Yotes defeated Concordia, the two teams play the
return game in Caldwell. The Cavaliers
(10-10, 3-6 CCC) have dropped three of their last four ball games – and face
the daunting task of playing seven of their final nine CCC games on the road. Darcy Madison (12.5 ppg, 4.8 rpg) is one of
three players averaging in double figures on a team that averages just nine
three-point attempts per game.
Albertson has won the past eight meetings with Concordia and holds a 18-4
all-times series edge.
RECORD WATCH: Kim Strunk and Angie Gribble continue
to move up the charts on the ACI career record book. Strunk now is second all-time for free throws made (294) –
needing just 33 made freebies to hold the all-time school mark. She ranks No. 3 in free throw attempts (372),
No. 4 in blocked shots (47), is sixth in games played (105), seventh in points
scored (857) and field goal attempts (653), eighth in steals (111) and rebounds
(552), and ranks ninth in field goals made (266). Gribble ranks fourth on the
all-time steals list with (132), is sixth on the all-time three-point field
goals made list (65), while ranking seventh in three-point attempts (222) and
assists (225).
CONFERENCE LEADERS: Scoring Average – Emilee Eisinger
(NW) 17.0, Jori Grady (ACI) 16.6, Heidi Horobiowski (EOU) 14.7, Jenny Olson
(ESC) 13.4, Kristen Woller (CAS) 13.4; Rebound Average – Ashley DuBrey (OIT) 9.7,
Olson 8.8, Adria Layne (EOU) 8.4, Kim Strunk (ACI) 8.1, Becky VanTine (WPC) 8.1;
