ATHLETIC
NEWS:
WOMEN’S TENNIS COMPETES IN LEWISTON: Four members of the Albertson
women’s tennis team competed last weekend at the ITA Pacific Northwest Regional
in Lewiston next weekend. Kyla
Westerberg placed third in singles competition, losing in the semifinal
round. Anna Moylan took home the
consolation championship, while both Katie Webster, and Channing Yip competed,
but did not place.
WATCH YOUR MAIL FOR SEASON TICKET BROCHURES: We were a bit early last week – now watch
your mail, as Albertson College basketball season ticket brochures will be sent
out early next week. The basketball
season is quickly approaching, with the first home games scheduled for November
18-19. Previews for both the men’s and
women’s basketball team will be in the next edition of ‘Yote Notes (the week of
Oct. 17).
CROSS COUNTRY: Coyote men finish sixth, women 22nd
at Willamette Invitational, off to I.S.U. as the No. 9 ranked team in the NAIA
LAST WEEK: at Charles
Bowles Willamette Invitational – Men 6th, Women 22nd.
COMING UP: at Idaho
State Open, Pocatello – Saturday.
‘YOTES CLIMB TO NO. 9: Thanks to an outstanding performance at the Willamette
Invitational, the Albertson College men's cross country team jumped 11 spots in
the latest NAIA national poll, moving to No. 9 in the rankings released this
morning. The Coyotes, competing for the just their second
season since a nearly 30-year layoff, began the year ranked No. 24 in the NAIA
- the first time that an Albertson running program has been ranked nationally.
After a team victory at the Hampton Inn and Suites Fall Invitational at West
Park in Nampa, the 'Yotes climbed to as high as No. 14, prior to this week. Two other NAIA Region I teams are in the Top-25 - led by No. 6 ranked
Southern Oregon. Simon Fraser is ranked No. 16, while Lewis-Clark State,
Concordia, and British Columbia all received votes.
COYOTE MEN
SIXTH AT WILLAMETTE: The No. 21 ranked Albertson College men's cross
country team made a point to the NAIA Region I on Saturday afternoon, finishing
sixth out of 29 teams at the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational at Bush’s
Pasture Park. David Fluckiger (Herisou,
Switzerland / Va. Commonwealth U.) led the way with a 25th-place finish
(25:19.95) in a field of 270 runners, as the 'Yotes had all five scoring
runners in the Top-100. Jacob Haas
(Portland, Ore. / Eastern Oregon U.) finished
31st (25:29.40) and Jesse Chlebeck (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan HS) 40th
(25:41.05).
AHEAD OF
THE PACK: The stellar finish for the ‘Yotes saw them finish behind
the No. 3 ranked team in the NCAA Division II (Chico State), two Top-25 teams
from the Division III (Willamette and St. John’s), the No. 4 ranked team in
Canada (Victoria), and No. 15 ranked Southern Oregon. Albertson did defeat the eight other Cascade Conference teams in
the race and topped No. 10 ranked British Columbia and No. 28 ranked Vanguard.
COMPARING
TO LAST YEAR: The difference in a year at the Invite is very
evident. Last year, Jacob Haas was the
top runner for the ‘Yotes – at 26:32.73.
This season, four of the top-five eclipsed that mark; in fact, Haas
shaved 63 seconds off his time. Same
can be said for Tyler Hopper (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS), who
took 69 seconds off last year’s time, and Chris
Rifer(Portland, Ore. / Sunset HS),
who was the No. 3 man last year (now the Coyotes No. 9 runner), was 19 seconds
faster.
EDWARDS
FINISHES 22ND: On the women’s side, the outstanding season for
senior Shannon Edwards (Sherwood, Ore. / Eastern Oregon U.) continues,
as she finished 22nd out of 258 runners in a time of 18:39.40. If the meet was a measuring stick to the
upcoming NAIA Region I meet (since all ten CCC and all but one regional school
participated), Edwards would be the second at-large selection for the NAIA
championships.
WOMEN MAKE
HUGE STRIDES: The women’s team finished in 22nd place at the event – but
more importantly, show marked improvement from last year. Edwards was 17 seconds faster this season,
despite very wet conditions. Two others
recorded significant personal-best times – Natalie
Hatch (Emmett, Idaho / Willamette U.)
and Megan Longo (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho / Coeur d’Alene HS). Hatch finished in a time of 20:06.55 – 56
seconds faster than last season and 46 seconds faster than her best
five-kilometer race. Longo was even
more impressive, taking nearly three minutes off last year’s time and running
79 seconds faster than she ever had. As
a team, the women were over nine minutes faster than last year at Willamette.
HOW ‘BOUT
THE COACHES: The student-athletes were not the only ones running at the
Willamette Invite, so were the coaches.
Assistant coach Tim Riley finished
eighth (24:57.70) in the men’s open race, while head coach Pat McCurry finished tenth (25:05.70).
OFF TO
IDAHO STATE: Albertson heads next to Pocatello for a small meet at Idaho
State. The Coyotes will take on
competitors from the host Bengals, Westminster College, and Montana
State-Billings.
HOME MEET
IN TWO WEEKS: Put October 22nd on your calendar, as the
Albertson College cross country team will host their first-ever meet in
Caldwell. The 5,000-meter women’s race
and the 8,000-meter men’s race will be run on the Albertson campus, with a two
kilometer loop winding through the institutions acreage. The start-finish line will be near the
Village Apartments, next to the Coyote softball field, off Ash Street.

VOLLEYBALL (11-3, 7-2 CCC): Cherrington named CCC and
Region I Setter of the Week, ‘Yotes sit in 3rd Place heading into
weekend play at home
LAST WEEK: vs. Lewis-Clark State (W 3-0), at
Warner Pacific (W 3-0), at Cascade (W 3-0).
COMING UP: vs. Corban, Friday, 7 p.m.; vs.
Concordia, Saturday, 7 p.m.
NEXT WEEK: at No. 14 Northwest, Friday
(10/14), 7 p.m. (PDT); at Evergreen, Saturday (10/15), 7 p.m. (PDT)
CHERRINGTON NAMED SETTER OF THE WEEK: Albertson
College setter Erin Cherrington (Granby, Colo / Middle Park HS)
was named Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I Setter of the Week after leading
the Lady ‘Yotes to three wins last week.
The junior recorded 127 assists and ten aces in the three matches,
averaging over 14 assists per game. It
is the second time this season and the seventh time in her career that
Cherrington has earned the accolade.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: With three victories, including
two on the road, the Albertson volleyball team remained No. 3 in the NAIA
Region I regional rankings. Southern
Oregon took over top spot and Northwest fell to No. 2, after the Raiders
defeated the Eagles in five games. After the Coyotes in the poll are Oregon
Tech, Great Falls, Westminster, Montana-Western, Carroll, Rocky Mountain, and
Montana State-Northern. Southern is
ranked No. 10 in the latest NAIA poll, with Northwest now at No. 14.
LADY ‘YOTES RECEIVE VOTES: For the third
time this season, the Albertson volleyballers received votes in the NAIA
national poll, good enough to be the No. 29 ranked team in the nation. The Coyotes received three votes in this week’s
poll – the fourth team listed in the “others receiving votes” category. The last time Albertson was ranked in the
NAIA Top-25 was during the 2001 season – a year after making their lone
National Tournament appearance. The
‘Yotes began 2001 ranked No. 15 in the preseason poll, dropped to No. 19 in the
first regular-season poll, and have not been ranked since.
COYOTES WHALLOP LC-STATE: Albertson College forced
Lewis-Clark State into a negative .090 hitting percentage, racking up 12.5 team
blocks as the Coyotes dominated the Warriors, 30-12, 30-13, 31-29 last
Wednesday night at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center. The
victory was the fourth in a row for the Coyotes over their in-state rivals. The Lady
'Yotes sprinted out to a 12-4 lead in Game 1, thanks to three kills from Tiffany
Sower (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS), Fran Hartman (Lakeview,
Ore. / Lakeview HS), Katie Hogue (Sparks, Nev. / Reed HS),
and Anne Parker (Pocatello, Idaho / Century HS). The hosts
closed out Game 2 on a 15-2 run to take the middle game, then rallied from
28-26 down to win the clincher. Hogue had eight kills and five blocks for
the Coyotes, one of ten different players to record kills. Erin
Cherrington had 40 assists and Charity Gaston (Harrisonberg, Va. /
James Madison Univ.) added 13 digs.
STILL PERFECT VS. WARNER: The Lady ‘Yotes ran their
record to 16-0 all-time against Warner Pacific with a convincing 30-21, 30-28,
30-18 victory over the Knights Saturday at C.C. Perry Gym in Portland. Fran Hartman led Albertson with ten kills,
as six players recorded at least five spikes in the match. Kathryn Ely (La Grande, Ore. / La
Grande HS) had eight kills, Anne Parker added seven kills and three blocks,
Katie Hogue had six kills and three aces, and Tiffany Sower added five kills
and three blocks. Reserve Aubrey Nielsen (Twin Falls, Idaho /
Walla Walla CC) smashed five kills in six swings. Erin Cherrington had 40 assists, while libero Charity Gaston
recorded 13 digs.
HOGUE HAS MONSTER NIGHT AT CASCADE: Katie
Hogue had the second-best hitting night in school history, as the Albertson
volleyball team swept three games from Cascade – 30-14, 30-28, 30-18 at the
Thunderdome in Portland on Saturday night.
The victory was the fifth-in-a-row for the Lady 'Yotes, who have now won
15 consecutive games. Hogue recorded 11
kills on 14 swings without an error for a .786 hitting percentage – the second-highest
total in the Cascade Conference this season. Only a .813 percentage
recorded by Miranda Harris in 1994 was a more prolific night. The
sophomore also added two blocks and four aces in the win. Albertson dominated the T-Birds in the first and last game,
but had to rally from a 23-17 deficit in Game 2 for the win. Kathryn Ely had 12 kills on the
night, with Fran Hartman adding 11. Erin Cherrington capped a big week
with 47 assists and four aces.
RECORD BOOK: Three players are climbing on the
career record list heading into this weekends action. Erin Cherrington reached the 2,500 career assist mark last week
(third-most in school history), while moving into fourth-place on the all-time
ace list with 119. Fran Hartman now has
781 kills, seventh-best in Coyote history, four behind sixth-place. She also moved into ninth-place all-time
with 208 blocks. In less than two
seasons, Katie Hogue now has 191 blocks, just nine from the 200 mark.
PORTLAND SCHOOLS HEADED TO CALDWELL: The
Coyotes put their five match win streak on the line this weekend, as the second
half of the Cascade Conference season begins with home matches against Corban
and Concordia. Friday night,
the Warriors (4-9, 4-5 CCC), the school formally known as Western Baptist,
heads to Caldwell. Corban is led by
freshman outside hitter Chelsea Reeher (3.29 k/g) and junior libero Becky Horn
(5.68 d/g). Albertson defeated the
Warriors in four games in September – and holds an 18-10 all-time edge. Saturday, Concordia comes to town looking to
end a three-game losing streak to the ‘Yotes.
The Cavaliers (8-9, 4-5) are led by the top libero in the CCC in Erin
Blythe (5.77 d/g), while Mari Lopes (2.83 k/g, 3.57 d/g) is their top
hitter. Concordia, which dropped a
four-game match to Albertson in September, leads the all-time series, 17-16.
OFF TO WASHINGTON: Next week, the Lady ‘Yotes get a
crack at one of the teams that has handed them a loss this season – Northwest,
as Albertson heads to Washington for a weekend set. The Eagles (16-1, 8-1) won their first 15 matches of the season –
rising to No. 10 in the national poll, before losing a tough five-game match to
Southern Oregon. Freshman of the Year
candidate Sara Bendorf has been a terror to opponents, leading the league with
a 4.64 kills per game average. As a
team, Northwest leads the league in kills per game, assists per game, and digs
per game. The Eagles defeated Albertson
in four games in Caldwell this September, but trail the all-time series, 15-4. Next Saturday, Albertson ventures to Evergreen
State, hoping to avoid a letdown in Olympia. The Geoducks (2-8, 2-7) got in the conference win column two
weeks ago with victories over Cascade and Warner Pacific. Evergreen is led by middle blocker Mattie
Blevins (2.67 k/g). Albertson holds a
7-2 all-time edge against the Clams, but the ‘Yotes are just 2-2 inside
Evergreen’s Recreation Center.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (7-5-1, 5-2-1 CCC): Roach
named Player of the Week after weekend split, ‘Yotes get bye week
LAST WEEK: vs. Corban
(L 3-0), vs. Warner Pacific (W 5-2)
THIS WEEK: Idle
NEXT WEEK: vs. No. 9
Concordia, Friday (10/14), 2 p.m.; vs. No. 28 Evergreen State, Saturday
(10/15), Noon.
ROACH NAMED
CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: For her efforts in the Lady ‘Yotes
matches against Corban and Warner Pacific, striker Leah Roach (Boise, Idaho /
Timberline HS) was named Cascade Conference Player of the Week. The sophomore tallied a pair of goals and an
assist in the 5-2 victory over Warner on Saturday afternoon. She currently leads Albertson with seven
goals scored and 15 total points – ranking seventh in the conference in goals
scored and ninth in total points. Roach
is the second Coyote to earn the weekly honor, as Allie Dufault (Irvine, Calif.
/ University HS) received the award on September 5.
BIG WIN VS.
WARNER: The Lady ‘Yotes kept their playoff hopes alive on a cold,
windy Saturday afternoon, knocking off Warner Pacific, 5-2. Emily
Dickerson (Nampa, Idaho / Vallivue
HS) got Albertson on the board in the 20th minute, as she blasted home a
feed from Leah Roach after a long cross from Nikki Anderson (Citrus
Heights, Calif. / Sierra CC). Roach
would make it 2-0 in the 27th minute, flicking home a Ryann Lagomarsino (Fair Oaks,
Calif. / Sierra CC) corner kick. Anderson would drive home a free
kick nine minutes later, as the 'Yotes took a 3-0 lead to half. Although the Knights would muster two second
half goals – so would the ‘Yotes. Jayne Saunders (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS) would head home a cross, and Roach
would add a goal in the waning seconds to complete the scoring.
MOST GOALS
AT HOME SINCE?: The five goals scored by the Lady ‘Yotes were the
most tallied at Symms Field in ten years.
The last time Albertson scored five-or-more goals at home took place on
Oct. 28, 1995, a 6-0 win over Western Baptist.
The most goals scored at Symms Field in school history were in 1993,
when the Coyotes recorded a 15-0 win over Western Baptist.
TOUGH LOSS
VS. CORBAN: Corban College tallied three scores in a ten minute second
half stretch to knock off Albertson College, 3-0, on Friday afternoon. Stalemated heading into the 62nd minute,
Amber Wihtol redirected a Kathleen Studenny direct kick into the right corner
of the net to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, Amy Ramos
ripped a one-time shot off a feed from Megan Waunch into the upper corner for a
two-goal cushion. Wihtol would cap the
scoring in the 72nd minute, taking a slotted ball by Waunch and beating Coyote
keeper Candice Frank (Boise, Idaho / Rocky Mountain Coll.)-
as the Warriors won for the 17th-straight time over Albertson. Corban had four early chances in the first
ten minutes of the match, but Frank stopped the Warriors cold. The Lady
'Yotes had two golden opportunities in the opening half - keeper Karyn Allen
stopped a Leah Roach header in the 19th minute, then an Allie Dufault
left-footed drive in the 29th minute off a Corban miscue banged off the
crossbar.
SURVEYING
THE PLAYOFF HUNT: With just three games remaining in the regular-season,
the Lady ‘Yotes are clinging to playoff hope – rooting for Southern Oregon and
Oregon Tech this weekend. Those two
clubs host the two teams Albertson is battling for playoff spots –
Concordia and Evergreen State. The
Coyotes and Evergreen are currently tied for first with 16 points (three points
per win, one per tie) – although Albertson has played two more games. Concordia is one point behind – with two
less games than the Lady ‘Yotes. The
top-two teams in both the North and South Division’s advance to the Cascade
Conference tournament.
REGIONAL
RANKINGS: Despite a 7-5-1 start to the 2005 season, the NAIA Region I
rankings have not given the Lady ‘Yotes a glance. The latest rankings have Simon Fraser leading the way, followed
by Concordia, Carroll, Evergreen State, and Rocky Mountain. Albertson has never been ranked in the
Region I Top-5 in school history.
IN RARIFIED
AIR: With seven wins already in the books, Albertson has already
surpassed the win totals in 14 of the 16 previous seasons of Lady ‘Yote
soccer. In fact, only two teams in
school history have won more games – the 1989 team that went 8-3, and the 2002
team that went 10-11. With three games
left, a win by the Coyotes would secure their first winning season in 16 years.
THE BYE,
THEN THE TOUGHIES: Albertson gets a rare midseason week off – helping the
club nurse injuries in preparation for the biggest women’s soccer weekend in
years. Next Friday, the Coyotes host
No. 9 Concordia, who dominated their
way to a 7-0 win in late September. The
Cavaliers (10-3, 5-1 CCC) struggled last week – losing matches to Evergreen and
Simon Fraser, and managing a 1-0 win over Holy Names. Jennifer Hughes and Justine Pronovost each have scored nine goals
this season for Grant Landy’s juggernaut, who lost in last year’s NAIA title
game. Concordia has won 16-straight
against Albertson and holds a 17-2-4 all-time series edge. Saturday, its Evergreen State heading to town, looking to redeem themselves for
the only blemish on their CCC ledger.
Despite a 29-5 shot advantage, Albertson recorded a 1-1 draw with the
Geoducks (8-0-2, 5-0-1) in late September.
Evergreen recorded a 1-0 win over Concordia last week, but followed it
up with a 1-1 draw against winless Great Falls. Alisha White is the favorite for CCC Player of the Year – leading
the loop with 11 goals scored. The
Clams hold a 14-6 edge in the all-time series.

MEN’S SOCCER (3-7, 2-2 CCC): ‘Yotes win
2-of-3 games over Homecoming, set for big two-week stretch
LAST WEEK: vs. Warner Pacific (W 2-1), vs.
Corban (L 3-0), vs. Walla Walla (W 4-0)
COMING UP: at No. 18 Concordia, Saturday, 1
p.m. (PDT); at Cascade, Sunday, 2:30 p.m.
NEXT WEEK: vs. Northwest, Friday, 4 p.m.; vs.
No. 24 Evergreen State, Saturday, 2 p.m.
GREAT HOMECOMING WEEKEND: Nearly 900 fans made their
way out to Symms Field for Homecoming 2005 on the Albertson College campus, and
Coyote soccer was a big part of the festivities. The large crowds saw the ‘Yotes pick up their second Cascade
Conference win of the year in a 2-1 victory over Warner Pacific, drop a strange
3-0 loss to Corban, followed by a rousing 4-0 trouncing of Walla Walla.
TALE OF THREE WEATHER DAYS: As
different as the games, so was the weather – as Symms Field took a beating over
the three days. Friday saw temperatures
in the mid-80’s and sunny skies; Saturday saw rain with a howling northwest
wind making winter coats a necessity; and Sunday was beautiful – although overnight
rain made the field a quagmire.
BIG WIN OVER WARNER PACIFIC: The Albertson College men's soccer
team gave a big Homecoming crowd something to cheer for, as the Coyotes rallied
from an early deficit to knock off Warner Pacific, 2-1, Friday at Symms Field. Two minutes into the second half, freshman Mauricio Both
(Cachoeira de Sul, Brazil / Nampa HS) one-timed a blast from 30-yards
out into the upper corner of the net to give Albertson their second-straight
conference win. The Knights took an early 1-0 lead
in the seventh minute, as Trevor Tharp slotted a pass to Chris Price, who beat
Coyote keeper Rob Erichson (Boise, Idaho / Walla Walla CC) to the
far post. Albertson would answer in the 37th minute, as Michael
Delgado (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) followed a blocked shot from
Mitch White (Boise, Idaho / Gonzaga U.) and slammed the ball into
the net. Albertson nearly made it 3-1in the
65th minute, but a shot by Both into an open net went high. Warner had
three direct kicks in the final ten minutes inside the 'Yote zone, but could
not convert. The hosts held a
22-13 edge in shots, but shots on goal were even at 5-5. Albertson led in
the corner department, 6-3.
TOUGH LOSS TO THE “S.F.K.A.W.B.”: A pair of
first half goals, 66 seconds apart, was all Corban College needed, as the
Warriors stopped the Albertson College men's soccer team, 3-0, this afternoon
at wind-whipped Symms Field.
Eric Branch took a Scott Marshall cross on the right post in
the 28th minute and flicked home the first goal for Corban, the “School
Formally Known as Western Baptist”. Just a minute later, miscommunication
by Albertson allowed Fernando Karczeski to get free outside the 18 and he
blasted home a shot in the upper V.
The Coyotes had a pair of golden opportunities in the
opening 45, but both Alex Penrod (Las Vegas, Nev. / Cimarron-Memorial
HS) and Ryan Huber (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) could not
convert from the right flank - inside the box.
Albertson held a
19-14 edge in shots, but Warrior keeper Brett Bentley kept the 'Yotes at bay,
making nine saves - including three diving saves in the second half.
EVERYONE PLAYS VS. WALLA WALLA: Mitch
White scored two goals in the first 17 minutes of play, as the Albertson
College men's soccer team dominated play in a 4-0 victory over Walla Walla
College on Sunday afternoon. The
Coyotes held a 33-2 shot advantage against the Wolves (4-3-1), a Seventh-Day
Adventist institution from College Place, Wash. White took a slotted ball from Ryan Huber in the tenth minute and
beat WWC keeper Tim Lo to the near post for a 1-0 lead. Seven minutes
later, White picked up a pass from Michael Delgado and rammed the ball in the
net. Albertson would get insurance
goals from Joe Chandler (Nampa, Idaho / Nampa HS) and Brian
Weiss (Mountain Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS) to cap the
scoring. Every able-bodied Coyote saw action in the match.
FINALLY A SHUTOUT: The win over Walla Walla was the
first shutout victory for the Coyotes in 2005.
Rob Erichson did not have to make a save in the match, as Albertson
ended a 349-day or a 12-match streak without blanking an opponent.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: A shake-up in the NAIA Region I
top-five poll occurred after Concordia defeated Evergreen State, 1-0, on
Saturday afternoon. Simon Fraser
remains atop the regional poll, followed by Concordia, Evergreen, Warner
Pacific, and Westminster. SFU is ranked
No. 7 in the latest NAIA poll, Concordia at No. 18, and Evergreen State at No.
24
THIS WEEKEND TO PORTLAND: Albertson heads out on the
road this weekend for games at Concordia and Cascade. Saturday afternoon, the ‘Yotes meet the
Cavaliers (7-3, 5-0 CCC), who have won six consecutive matches and are the only
undefeated team in the conference standings.
Dan Birkey’s squad is led by newcomer Mirzet Sacirovic (6 goals, 7
assists) and All-CCC striker Luis Garcia (7 goals, 2 assists). The two teams split the series last season –
each winning on the other’s home pitch, with the ‘Yotes holding an 18-15-1
all-time series edge. Sunday, it’s a meeting
with Cascade – who is looking to break a 29-match winless streak in the Cascade
Conference. The T-Birds (1-6-1, 0-4)
have the best squad they have had since the 2002 season – and have played every
game close, thanks to keeper Elijah Timofeyev (2.57 GAA). It is the 26th meeting between
the teams, with Albertson holding a 21-4 edge.
NEXT WEEKEND – TWO HOME GAMES: Next
weekend, the second round of Cascade Conference play begins, as Northwest and
Evergreen State make their lone visit to Caldwell. The Eagles (3-6, 1-3) have been the
tough-luck team of the CCC – having lost three one-goal games, before finally
recording a 3-2 win over Warner Pacific on Tuesday. Northwest has received production out of Geoff Goodwill (4 goals)
and Josh Bean (3 goals, 1 assist) – but could not convert in a 3-1 loss to
Albertson in September. The ‘Yotes have
won 12-straight against the Eagles and hold a 19-2 all-time edge. Evergreen heads to town having seen their
six-game win streak snapped at Concordia.
The Geoducks (7-2, 3-1) have played solid defense all season – allowing just
seven goals in nine matches – thanks to keeper Sean Oliver (0.71 GAA). Evergreen shutout the ‘Yotes, 2-0, in
September, but Albertson owns a 11-4-1 all-time edge.
