VOLLEYBALL (25-5): Coyotes off to NAIA Tournament, open pool-play against No. 1 ranked Fresno Pacific

COMING UP: at NAIA Championships, San Diego, Calif. – Wednesday vs. No. 1 Fresno Pacific, 9 a.m. (PST), vs. No. 14 Houston Baptist (Tex.), 1:30 p.m. (PST); Thursday vs. No. 11 Georgetown (Ky.), 9 a.m. (PST), vs. No. 21 Lee (Tenn.), 3:45 p.m. (PST); Championship Round – Friday and Saturday.

COYOTES HEAD TO SAN DIEGO: The Coyotes embarked on their journey to San Diego on Monday afternoon – set for their second trip to nationals in school history.  Albertson will have a practice session in Golden Gymnasium on Tuesday, attend the Championship Gala on Tuesday night, and then be one of six teams to open up the tournament at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

ABOUT THE NAIA VOLLEYBALL NATIONALS: The NAIA Volleyball Championships will be held November 30 through December 3 on the campus of Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, Calif.  A total of 20 teams qualified through their respective regional tournament (13 regional winners, four at-large selections, and three wild card selections).  Four pools of five teams will play round-robin competition, with the top-two teams in each pool advancing to the national quarterfinals.  The eight remaining teams will play a single-elimination bracket to determine the national champ.

ABOUT FRESNO PACIFIC: The Sunbirds (34-0) are the unanimous No. 1ranked team in the NAIA and are looking to win their third national title (1989, 2003).  FPU has won 102 of the 105 games that they have played this year (not including a exhibition sweep of NCAA Division I Fresno State), and allowed only opponents to reach 28 or more points in a game just seven times.  It is the 12th straight appearance at the NAIA Championships for the Sunbirds and 15th appearance overall.  They are led by freshman Thais Julio (4.7 k/g, 2.9 d/g) from Brazil and Lorena Zuleta (3.3 k/g, 1.2 b/g) from Colombia – two of four international stars on the squad.  FPU won the 2005 Golden State Athletic Conference title and the NAIA Region I championship.  It is the first meeting between the teams and the first-ever meeting for the ‘Yotes against the No. 1 team in the nation.  Albertson is a combined 2-5 all-time against teams from the GSAC.

ABOUT HOUSTON BAPTIST: The Huskies (36-4) are the No. 14 ranked team in the NAIA and are competing in their fourth-straight national tournament.  HBU won the Red River Athletic Conference West Division title and captured the NAIA Region VI crown.  The squad won 27 of their first 28 matches – holding opponents to ten or fewer points in a game 14 times.  They are led by Nicole Westerterp (4.0 k/g, 1.6 b/g), a 6-3 blocker, and Stasia Davis (3.2 k/g, 3.0 d/g), a six-foot outside.  Albertson met the Huskies during the 2000 season in a preseason tournament, with HBU defeating the ‘Yotes in five games.  It marked the only time in school history that the Coyotes have played a team from Texas.

ABOUT GEORGETOWN: The Tigers (37-7) are the No. 11 ranked team in the NAIA and seeded No. 8 in the tournament.  Georgetown is participating in their tenth NAIA tournament – looking for their first trip past the national quarterfinals.  The Mid-South Conference and NAIA Region VI champions are led by outside hitters Carolyn Schnurr (4.3 k/g) and Jessica Hoeh (3.4 k/g, 4.6 d/g).  The Kentucky school made a trip out West earlier this year, competing in Concordia’s Labor Day tourney, defeated Cascade Conference foes Concordia and Warner Pacific in straight sets.  It is the first meeting between the teams and first for a Coyote team against a club from the Bluegrass State.

ABOUT LEE: The Flames (29-10) are the No. 21 ranked team in the NAIA and are making their fourth-consecutive appearance at the NAIA Championships (fifth overall).  Lee has struggled at nationals, recording a 4-12 all-time record.  The club captured their ninth Southern States Athletic Conference title in the last ten years, along with winning the NAIA Region XIII crown.  Bruna Langer (3.3 k/g, 1.2 b/g) and Ligia Zobolli (2.8 k/g, 2.6 d/g) lead the way for the Flames – who have won eight matches in a row.  Last year, Southern Oregon defeated Lee in three games at the national tournament, ending the Flames NAIA-record 44-game win streak.  It is the first meeting between the ‘Yotes and Lee, and the first meeting for Albertson against a team from Tennessee.

HISTORY AT NATIONALS: Albertson has advanced to nationals on one other occasion, as the Lady ‘Yotes earned an at-large berth after a runner-up finish at the 2000 NAIA Region I tournament.  The ‘Yotes would travel to Palm Beach, Fla., where they would go 1-3 in pool play – winning a match against Bloomfield (N.J.), but losing matches to Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.), St. Mary (Neb.), and Madonna (Mich.).

FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP SINCE?: The CCC and NAIA Region I tournament titles were the first-ever by a Coyote volleyball team, but not the first championship by the Lady ‘Yotes.  The 1982 College of Idaho spikers, under the direction of Don Braunecker, won the Cascade Conference championship, but lost at the NAIA District II tournament.

100 WINS: The Lady ‘Yotes are inching head coach Liz Mendiola closer and closer to a personal milestone.  The fifth-year leader currently has an all-time record of 99-50 – with a win at the national tournament giving Mendiola an even 100 victories.

NATIONAL RANKING: The surging Lady ‘Yotes cracked the final NAIA Top-25 national poll, as the 13 coaches on the voting committee selected the Lady 'Yotes the No. 24 ranked team in the nation.  It marks the third-time in school history that the Coyotes have been ranked nationally, coming at the heals of eight consecutive weeks of receiving votes in the national poll.  Albertson was ranked No. 15 in the 2001 NAIA Preseason Poll, dropping to No. 19 in the first regular-season poll of the 2001 season.  They had not been in the Top-25 since.   Southern Oregon fell to No. 12 and Northwest fell to No. 18 in the latest poll.  Unbeaten Fresno Pacific and National American claimed the top-two spots.

SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS FALL: The 2005 Lady ‘Yotes look to make a dent in the single-season record book over the weekend in Salt Lake.  Charity Gaston eclipsed the single-season record for digs with 615, blowing past the old record of 550, set by Brecia Gamett in 2000.  Gaston’s digs per game average of 5.64 is nearly five-tenths of a dig per game more than the current record.  Katie Hogue broke the single-season record for aces against Northwest, recording her 62 ace in the Game 4 win.  Hogue surpassed the total set by Jesse Evett during the 1994 season.  Erin Cherrington is on pace to destroy her own school record for assists per game in a season, as her current average of 13.28 assists per game is well ahead of the record (12.54) she set last year.  Fran Hartman is also ahead of the pace to break the hitting percentage record.

CAREER RECORD BOOK: Four players are climbing on the career record list heading into the NAIA national championships.  Erin Cherrington reached the 3,400 career assist mark last week (3,438, third-most in school history), while remaining in fourth-place on the all-time ace list with 136.  Fran Hartman became the fourth player in school history to record 1,000-or-more kills in a career, vaulting into fourth-place all-time with 1,013 (just ten kills away from the No. 3 slot).  She also moved into fourth-place all-time with 260 blocks, and ranks No. 9 all-time with 382 games played.  In less than two seasons, Katie Hogue now has 246 blocks, sixth-place all-time, while Charity Gaston, in less than two seasons, has recorded 918 digs – ninth-most in school history.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (5-3): Albertson wins Lady ‘Yote Classic, open CCC play on road at Eastern Oregon

LAST WEEK: hosted Caldwell Best Western Inn and Suites Lady ‘Yote Classic – vs. Westminster (W 75-61), vs. Whitman (W 86-74)

COMING UP: at Eastern Oregon, Friday, 5:30 p.m. (PST)

RADIO AND INTERNET: All nine women’s CCC road games will be broadcast live this season on 1490 KCID-AM with Mike Safford Jr. calling the action.  Friday night, the Lady ‘Yotes meet Eastern Oregon live on “Oldies 1490,” with the pregame show beginning at 6:15 p.m. (MST), with the tip-off at 6:30 p.m. (MST)

LIVE STATS: Live stats of Friday’s game at Eastern are available via the Eastern Oregon athletic website at www.eoni.com/~sghrist/livestats/wbx/xlive.htm.

COYOTES TO OPEN CCC PLAY VS. EASTERN: With the elimination of Tuesday night games during the 2005-06 Cascade Conference season, the league has shifted the opening weekend up two weeks to Dec. 2-3.  The Lady ‘Yotes will square off against rival Eastern Oregon on Friday night, while the remaining eight teams will each play two games.  Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon travel to Corban and Concordia, while Warner Pacific and Cascade travel to Evergreen State and Northwest.  The league will then take two weeks off to conduct final exams, with conference play resuming on Dec. 20-21.

EASTERN HOLDS EDGE IN I-84 CUP BATTLE: Although the I-84 Cup, a traveling trophy between EOU and ACI, is only awarded following each men’s basketball contest between the schools, the women’s teams from each school battle as well if a trophy was on the line.  The Mountaineers have won seven consecutive games (nine consecutive regular-season games) against their Idaho rival, including sweeping the Lady ‘Yotes (69-50 in Caldwell, 66-56 in La Grande) last season.  The last Albertson win came during the 2002 CCC postseason tournament, when the Coyotes topped Eastern 92-71 to advance to the CCC title game.  It is the 24th meeting between the teams since 1995, with the ‘Yotes holding a 13-10 edge.

ABOUT THE MOUNTIES:  Eastern (6-1) is off to an outstanding start in 2005-06, after losing All-CCC guard Jaime Jo Cant and point-guard Vanessa Shelton to graduation.  The Mountaineers lost their season opener at Montana-Western, but have won six-straight, including wins over the weekend in the Lady ‘Yote Classic against Whitman (75-68) and Westminster (69-68).  Christie Weaver (15.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg) leads the league in three-point percentage (.560), including a CCC-record ten treys in a win at Montana Tech.  Heidi Horobiowski (13.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg) is one of the most difficult players in the league to defend, while newcomer Adria Layne (12.6 ppg, 6.1 rpg) is a very athletic post.

RECAP OF LADY ‘YOTE CLASSIC: Since it was a classic format, no champion was crowned.  However, unofficially, Eastern Oregon and Albertson staked claim to the title, as both teams finished the weekend with 2-0 records.

IF THERE WERE AN ALL-TOURNEY TEAM?: If an All-Tournament team were to be selected, it would have been a difficult choice.  Whitman would have had two selections, as both Lizzy Washburn (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Katie Patneaude (20 points, 8 rebounds) had monster tourneys.  Westminster’s Shalee Fackrell (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Eastern’s Adria Layne (16 points, 8 rebounds, 13-for-24 FG) would also have been honored.  However, it would have been the Lady ‘Yotes Kim Strunk (Twin Falls, Idaho / Twin Falls HS) earning tourney MVP honors, as the senior averaged 21 points and eight rebounds per game, while connecting on 12-of-17 shots from the floor.

TOURNAMENT RECORDS: Two tournament records fell over the weekend in the 7th Caldwell Best Western Inn and Suites Lady ‘Yote Classic.  Christie Weaver established a new record for three-pointers in a game with six, as Eastern defeated Whitman.  Three others had previously made five treys in one game.  The other record was for points scored by a team in the tournament, as Albertson recorded 161 points in their two wins, two more points than the Lady ‘Yotes scored in winning the 1997 tournament (wins over Cal Lutheran and Pacific Lutheran).

COYOTES TOP WESTMINSTER AGAIN:  Three consecutive three-point baskets midway through the second half gave the Albertson College women's basketball team the lead for good, as the Lady 'Yotes knocked off Westminster College, 75-61, in Game 2 of the Best Western Inn and Suites Lady 'Yote Classic in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  Leading 35-33 at the break, the Coyotes saw the visitors hold them without a field goal for the first four minutes of the period, opening a 38-35 edge.  Trailing 42-41, three's by Jori Grady (Roseburg, Ore. / Umpqua CC), Angie Gribble (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS), and Kim Strunk gave Albertson an eight point margin, and the squad never trailed again.  Strunk led Albertson with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Gribble notched a season high with 17 points and four assists.  Grady added 15 points, including three treys, with Whitney Clark (Jerome, Idaho / NW Nazarene U.) coming off the bench to score 13 points and seven rebounds.

BIG HALF NETS VICTORY OVER WHITMAN: Despite opening the game 1-for-16 from the field, the Albertson College women's basketball ran its winning streak to four games with an 86-74 victory over Whitman College in the final game of the Caldwell Best Western Inn and Suites Lady 'Yote Classic.  Whitman sprinted out to an 18-6 lead, holding the Coyotes to just one field goal over the first 11 minutes of the game.  However, back-to-back treys from Whitney Clark and Angie Gribble would energize the hosts.  Albertson would battle back, tying the score for the first time at 30-30 on a Magen Dufurrena (Denio, Nev. / Lowry HS) free throw late in the first half.  The squad would take the lead for good at 49-46 on another Clark triple, part of her 19-point night.  The Coyotes made 19-of-29 shots in the second half.  Kim Strunk led all scorers with 23 points and seven rebounds, with Jori Grady adding 13 points.  Gribble had nine points, eight assists, and five rebounds, with Dufurrena scoring nine points and pulling down ten boards.

CONFERENCE LEADERS: Scoring Average – Emilee Eisinger (NW) 23.0, Denise Benedict (CU) 18.5, Jori Grady (ACI) 17.8, Rachel Ross (ESC) 16.7, Kim Strunk (ACI) 15.0; Rebound Average – Joyce Oniah (CU) 11.3, Ashley DuBrey (OIT) 11.0, Becky VanTine (WPC) 10.3, Eisinger 9.7, Jenny Olson (ESC) 9.0; Field Goal Percentage – Eisinger .610, Grady .540, Adria Layne (EOU) .532, Sara Beyer (SOU) .532, Ross .531; Assist Average – Jacque Barton (WPC) 5.3, Tosha Wilson (COR) 5.0, Jasmine Yeldon (NW) 4.0, Angie Gribble (ACI) 3.8, Nicole Brown (WPC) 3.5.

RECORD BOOK: Both Kim Strunk and Angie Gribble continue to climb the career record chart at ACI.  Strunk ranks No. 4 all-time in free throws made (240) and attempts (304), ranks No. 8 in blocked shots (34), No. 9 in games played (92) and points scored (728), and No. 10 in rebounds (431) and field goals made (230).  She sits just outside the top-ten in steals (93) and field goal attempts (534).  Gribble ranks No. 6 on the three-pointers made list (59), ranks seventh in both steals (104) and three-point attempts (185), and is No. 8 in assists (191).

NAIA NATIONAL POLL: Two-time defending national champion Morningside of Iowa was named the unanimous choice as the No. 1 team in the NAIA Division II in the preseason Top-25 poll.  Two Cascade Conference teams were in the poll – Corban was ranked No. 27, while Oregon Tech was ranked No. 38.  Two other opponents in the NAIA Division I were ranked – Montana-Western, whom the Lady ‘Yotes play twice this season, is No. 18, and MSU-Northern at No. 36.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (2-4): Coyotes look to shake off rough road trip on Friday against Eastern Oregon in La Grande

LAST WEEK: at No. 17 Westminster (L 92-85), vs. Lubbock Christian (L 66-49)

COMING UP: at Eastern Oregon, Friday, 7:30 p.m. (PST)

RADIO: All 27 regular-season men’s basketball games will be broadcast live in the Treasure Valley on 1490 KCID-AM, the “Home of the Coyotes.”  Mike Safford Jr. begins his fifth season as the play-by-play man for Albertson basketball, with the pregame show beginning 20 minutes prior to every game.  This weekend marks the first of nine women-men road doubleheaders on the radio, with coverage beginning at 6:15 p.m. (MST)

LIVE STATS: Live stats of Friday’s game at Eastern are available via the Eastern Oregon athletic website at www.eoni.com/~sghrist/livestats/mbx/xlive.htm.

‘YOTES STRUGGLE IN SALT LAKE CITY: Four days away from friends and family during Thanksgiving is not an easy thing to do – especially for a college basketball team.  The Albertson men’s hoopsters found that out last week, dropping a pair of games in Utah at Westminster College – a tight 92-85 decision to the host Griffins, and a lopsided 66-49 loss to Lubbock Christian.

TOUGH LOSS TO WESTMINSTER: Westminster College saw a 19-point lead trimmed to two points on a pair of occasions, but withstood the Albertson College rally, as the Griffins knocked off the 'Yotes, 92-85, Wednesday night in Payne Gymnasium.  Westminster took a 51-32 first half lead and led 56-40 early in the second half.  However, a 14-0 Albertson run cut the lead to two with 12 minutes left.  The Griffins would respond with an 8-0 run themselves, only to see the 'Yotes trim the deficit to 70-68 on an Ike Stafford (Auburn, Wash. / Salt Lake CC) three-point play with 6:55 left.  However, the Griffins would respond, as key three's from Jared Ruiz and Ryan Olson kept the Coyotes at bay.  Stafford had a monster night for the Coyotes, scoring 31 points.  Josh Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) had 14, Dan McFaul (Moses Lake, Wash. / Big Bend CC) added 12 in the loss.

MORE ON IKE’S NIGHT: The 31 points scored by Ike Stafford on Wednesday was not only a season-high for the transfer, it was a career-high.  “I have never scored that many points in a game – whether it be junior high, high school, or college,” said the junior.  “Well, maybe I did in rec-ball.”  It was the most points scored by a Coyote since Steve Humphreys scored 32 points against Western Baptist last year.  It marked the 12th time that a Coyote has scored 30-or-more points under head coach Mark Owen.

CHAMP, MCGEE SHINE: Despite the loss to Westminster, freshmen Bryan Champ (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) and Craig McGee (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) had their best games as collegians.  Champ was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the foul line, scoring 11 points.  McGee went 4-of-5 from the floor, scoring eight points, to go along with two rebounds in 16 minutes of action.

ROUGH OUTING VS. LUBBOCK: A flat Albertson College men's basketball team could not match the play of a previously winless Lubbock Christian club, as the Chaparrals notched their first win of the season, a convincing 66-49 victory Friday night over the 'Yotes in Payne Gymnasium.  Albertson made just 15-of-55 shots from the floor, including a 1-for-13 spell from three-point range in the first half, as LCU opened a 36-20 lead at the break.  Dustin Patterson hit five three's for the Chaps, part of a career-high 21 point night.  Bernardo Rocha added seven points and 16 rebounds for the victors.  The Coyotes were led by Brandon Nielsen (Twin Falls, Idaho / Big Bend CC) with 16 points - all in the second half.  Kurt Nielson (Rexburg, Idaho / Eastern Utah CC) added 11 points and five rebounds in the loss.

‘YOTES VS. TEXAS: Albertson is still searching for their first victory against a team from Texas.  With the loss to Lubbock Christian, the Coyotes are 0-3 against clubs from the Lone Star State (Wayland Baptist, St. Mary’s)

LOWEST TOTAL SINCE: The 49 points scored on Friday night was the fewest a Coyote team has tallied against a non-conference, non-NCAA Division I opponent in 30 years.  In 1975, Murray Satterfield’s College of Idaho lost to Lewis-Clark State, 65-47 – the last time a Coyote club had failed to score 49 points in a game.  The 2002-03 ‘Yotes scored 53 points during an NAIA Tournament game against Taylor (Ind.), but Albertson registered a 53-44 victory in the opening round game – still the lowest scoring total in NAIA Division II tournament history.

I-84 CUP ON THE LINE: Friday night, the Coyote men’s basketball team opens up Cascade Conference play against rival Eastern Oregon in La Grande’s Quinn Coliseum.  ACI and Eastern have played every season since 1945 (the longest continuous rivalry for the Coyotes) – with the ‘Yotes holding a 78-35 in the series (Albertson and Northwest Nazarene had played every season from 1946 to 2001, before a two-year hiatus).  With the emerging popularity of the men’s game among the respective student bodies, an “I-84 Cup” will go to the winner of each game – the trophy residing at the winning school until the next meeting.  Albertson has become one of our greatest rivals,” said EOU athletic director Rob Cashell.  “The I-84 Cup represents added incentive to prepare for the 'Yotes and earn a victory. It also gives our fans and boosters an added experience."  The I-84 Cup has been in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center since a Jan. 7, 2005 victory by the Coyotes and will accompany the team to La Grande on Friday.

ABOUT EASTERN: The Mountaineers (5-2) have been red hot, having won three games in a row, including the championship of Whitman College’s Wildhorse Resort and Casino Tournament.  Eastern’s lone losses have come at Montana-Western (in overtime) and to Carroll (71-61).  Five players average in double-figures – led by Idaho State transfer Maurice Thomas (15.4 ppg, 3.6 apg), a high school teammate of Coyote Derek Brown (Las Vegas, Nev. / Desert Pines HS).  All-CCC forward Chad Fairbanks (14.6 ppg, 6.4 rpg), freshman Tanner McIntosh (12.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg), and sophomores Mark Carollo (11.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg) and Eric Orton (11.6 ppg, 3.5 rpg) round out the scoring punch for EOU, who are averaging 84 points a game.

‘YOTES RANKED #16 TO START SEASON: A year removed from their third consecutive trip to the NAIA Division II national tournament, the Albertson men’s basketball team was ranked No. 16 in the preseason NAIA Division II Top-25 poll.  The ‘Yotes were one of five Cascade Conference teams in the group – Southern Oregon (No. 2), Oregon Tech (No. 4), Warner Pacific (No. 36) and Corban (No. 42).  Last season, the CCC advanced four teams to the NAIA tournament – with OIT advancing to the Final Four and Southern Oregon to the Elite Eight.  However, with the 2-4 start, it is likely that the ‘Yotes will fall from the Top-25.

PRESEASON RANKINGS BECOMING FAMILIAR: For the fifth-consecutive season, the Coyotes have been ranked to start the season.  Last season, Albertson began the year No. 21 and ascended as high as No. 5 in the nation.  The last team not to be ranked to start a season was the 2000-01 club, the first season with Mark Owen as head coach, a team that eventually advanced to the Elite Eight of the NAIA Tournament.

SWIMMING: Coyotes to compete this weekend at Northwest Invitational

LAST WEEK: Idle

COMING UP: at Northwest Invitational, Portland, Ore., Friday and Saturday

‘YOTES TO COMPETE AGAINST BEST IN NORTHWEST CONFERENCE: The Albertson College swim team will shake off four weeks of rest this weekend, competing in the Northwest Invitational at Lewis & Clark College in Portland.  The meet will pit the Coyotes against the eight schools with swim programs in the NCAA Division III’s Northwest Conference – Lewis & Clark, Linfield, Pacific, Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman, Whitworth, and Willamette.

WHERE THE COYOTES COULD SCORE: Head coach Mike Shines is excited for the chances of a pair of relays this weekend.  The women’s 200-freestyle relay of Sarah Huston (Weiser, Idaho / Weiser HS), Christine Mabile (Post Falls, Idaho / Coeur d’Alene Charter HS), Tessa Mennell (Pine Grove, Calif. / Mount Oaks HS), and Alphonsina Savell (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS) swam an exhibition time of 1:51.62 earlier this year – nearly five seconds faster than the NAIA provisional time.  Shines is also excited for the men’s 400-freestyle relay of Jeremy Younggren (Island City, Ore. / La Grande HS), Scott Mikelonis (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS), Matt Barclay (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS), and John Green (Pleasanton, Calif. / Foothill HS), who will be attempting to crack the NAIA top-time list this weekend.  Barclay is also a contender to secure a national qualifying time in the 50-free (his top time this year is just six-hundredths of a second off the provisional), while Savell looks to add the 200-breaststroke to her previous qualifying mark in the 100-breast.
