OLDEST COLLEGIATE BASKETBALL RIVALRY IN IDAHO: The
recorded history of the Albertson-Northwest Nazarene series began in 1933, with
the College of Idaho knocking off NNC, 23-16.
Overall, the two teams have met 182 times in men’s basketball, with the
Coyotes holding a 110-72 advantage. The
Coyotes have had three seven-game win streaks in the series (1952-56,1960-62.
1984-86), while NNU has won five games in a row three times (1975-76, 1977-80,
and 1996-97). This will, however, be
the first true exhibition game in the series (last year’s meeting was a counter
for ACI, and an exhibition for NNU).
TEAMS ON A NATIONAL SCENE: Both the
Coyotes and Crusaders have been very successful on the national stage over the
course of the last four decades.
Albertson has advanced to 16 NAIA national tournaments, including four
of the last five years – winning the 1996 crown. Northwest Nazarene, before their move to the NCAA Division II
made nine appearances in the NAIA tourney, with a second and three third-place
finishes. The two schools combined have
a 31-23 record at nationals.
LAST YEAR: NNU rallied from a 54-48 second half
deficit behind the one-two punch of posts Mesut Ademoglu and Daniel Nyom to
knock off the Coyotes, 78-75. Ademoglu , who had 14 points gave the
Crusaders the lead for good at 71-70, with a runner in the paint with 2:53
left. Albertson struggled all night on the glass, being outrebounded by
their NCAA Division II rivals, 37-17. While the Crusaders hit 7-of-8 free
throws down the stretch, the Coyotes missed three consecutive 1-and-1
opportunities. After the 'Yotes scored
the opening bucket of the game, NNU would respond with a 13-2 run to take their
biggest lead of the contest at 13-4, less than five minutes into the game. The NAIA squad would not fall down, however,
cutting the lead to four at the break, then getting 16 of a career-high 29
points from Derek Brown (Las Vegas, Nev. / Desert Pines HS) in
the second stanza to take their second lead of the game at 41-40. Travis Fidrich led NNU with 16 points, with
Ryan McCarthy adding 14. The 'Yotes got 11 points from reserves Rich
Fried, Josh Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS), and senior Joe
Green, who added six steals.
ABOUT THE CRUSADERS: Northwest Nazarene (17-10 in
2004-05) fell just one win away from their first NCAA Division II national
tournament berth – and returns three starters to try and make that dream a
reality. Leading the group is Mesut
Ademoglu (15.9 ppg, 8.7 rpg), a two-time All-Great Northwest Athletic
Conference selection – one of the top players in all the GNAC. Ryan McCarthy (11.5 ppg) returns at a guard,
where he hit 67 three-pointers, while point-guard Marcus Clift (4.0 ppg, 1.6
apg) looks for a good senior season.
NNU has a new head coach who is familiar to Coyote fans – as Tim Hills,
the longtime Western Baptist head man, takes over in Nampa. His first recruiting class is stellar –
including guard Tim Ireland (16.6 ppg at Whatcom CC), swing-man Kenneth Irby
(11.5 ppg, 6.6 rpg at West LA CC), and point-guard Jermell Rowland (9.5 ppg,
3.7 apg at Foothill CC). NNU was picked
to finish second by the ten GNAC coaches in the preseason coaches poll.
LOSS AT BOISE STATE: Coby Karl led five Boise State players in double-figures
with 20 points, as the NCAA Division I Broncos defeated Albertson College,
91-64, in the men's basketball exhibition opener for both teams at Taco Bell
Arena on Thursday night. The win for Boise State was sweet
redemption, as the Broncos were humbled by the Coyotes, 87-66, in last season's
opener. BSU got a pair of early treys from
Tyler Tiedeman to jump out to a 13-2 edge. After Albertson closed to
19-14 on an Ike Stafford (Auburn, Wash. / Salt Lake CC) three,
the Broncos used a 16-0 run to take command, building a 37-point second half
lead. Matt Bauscher hit 6-of-8 shots as part of his 14 point
night for the victors, while Kenny Wilson and Tiedeman came off the bench to
tally 13. The Coyotes, who hit 9-of-18 from
outside the arc, were led by the 17 points of sophomore Josh Owen, and the 15
points of senior Derek Brown. Albertson, however, committed 22 turnovers.
‘YOTES RANKED #16 TO START SEASON: A year
removed from their third consecutive trip to the NAIA Division II national
tournament, the Albertson men’s basketball team was ranked No. 16 in the
preseason NAIA Division II Top-25 poll. The ‘Yotes were one of five Cascade Conference teams in the group
– Southern Oregon (No. 2), Oregon Tech (No. 4), Warner Pacific (No. 36) and
Corban (No. 42). Last season, the CCC
advanced four teams to the NAIA tournament – with Oregon Tech advancing to the
Final Four and Southern Oregon to the Elite Eight.
PRESEASON RANKINGS BECOMING FAMILIAR: For the
fifth-consecutive season, the Coyotes have been ranked to start the
season. Last season, Albertson began
the year No. 21 and ascended as high as No. 5 in the nation. The last team not to be ranked to start a
season was the 2000-01 club, the first season with Mark Owen as head
coach, a team that eventually advanced to the Elite Eight of the NAIA
Tournament.
OFF TO QUINN CLASSIC: Albertson begins their 2005-06
for real on Friday night, heading to La Grande for their second appearance in a
row at the Quinn Classic, hosted by Eastern Oregon. The ‘Yotes open up play with highly-touted Carroll College,
fresh off a Final Four appearance at the NAIA Division I national
tournament. The Fighting Saints (5-0)
begin the season ranked No. 7 in the NAIA Division I – an just completed a 3-0
road trip to Mary (N.D)., Dickinson State (N.D.), and South Dakota Tech. Head coach Gary Turcott returns four
starters from last year – including All-America forward Jeff Hays (16.5 ppg),
point-guard Kurt Paulson (10.1 ppg, 6.8 apg), and shooting-guard Sinan Guler
(13.6 ppg, 2.5 spg). It is the 22nd
meeting between the clubs and first since an Albertson 83-53 win in 2001. The Coyotes hold an 11-10 edge in the
all-time series. Saturday night the
Coyotes meet Montana-Western for the first of two meetings this
year. The Bulldogs (2-2) opened the
season with two home wins, but dropped games over the weekend to
Concordia-Irvine and Fresno Pacific.
Western is led by guard Tyler Palmer (20.8 ppg) – the NAIA Division I’s
top free-throw shooter, along with transfer point-guard Charlie Cox (18.5 ppg,
8.6 apg). The ‘Dogs average nearly 90
points a game – but allow 94 per contest.
Albertson has won the past five meetings in the series and holds a 29-17
all-time series edge.
LAST YEAR AT THE QUINN CLASSIC: Albertson
made its debut in the Quinn Classic last year and promptly took home the team
title. The ‘Yotes dispatched
Montana-Western (80-76) and ran past Montana Tech (85-58) to take the
title. Former Coyote post Rich Fried
was named tournament MVP.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (1-1): Lady ‘Yotes
earn split in Montana, off for trio of games in Salt Lake City
LAST WEEK: at Montana State-Northern (W
80-77), at Montana State-Northern (L 72-55)
COMING UP: at Downtown Holiday Inn
Invitational, Salt Lake City – Thursday vs. Great Falls, 4 p.m.; Friday vs. No.
18 Montana-Western, 4 p.m.; Saturday vs. Westminster, 6 p.m.
RADIO AND INTERNET: All nine women’s CCC road games
will be broadcast live this season on 1490 KCID-AM with Mike Safford Jr.
calling the action. In addition, all
home games (along with the nine CCC road tilts) will be broadcast live on the
internet, courtesy of the Albertson Athletic Website.
LADY ‘YOTES EARN SPLIT IN MONTANA: Season
openers have not been kind to the Albertson College women’s basketball team
since basketball resumed at the institution in 1995. In fact, the Lady ‘Yotes had won only 2-of-10 opening games,
including a 1-3 mark under head coach Reagan Rossi. However, Albertson did not let the weariness
of a 700 mile bus ride deter them, as the Coyotes earned a split at Montana
State-Northern – winning on opening night, 80-77, before succumbing to the
Skylights on Saturday, 72-55. The win
was just the fourth victory in school history in Montana (the last, an 82-70
victory over Montana Tech in 2002).
CLARK’S HEROICS LIFT ACI TO OPENING WIN: Whitney
Clark (Jerome, Idaho / Northwest Nazarene Univ.) capped a wild
finish by banking home a 35-foot heave at the buzzer, as the Albertson College
women’s basketball team defeated Montana State-Northern, 80-77, in the Armory
Gymnasium on Friday night. The Lady
‘Yotes, who trailed 40-31 at the break, took a 73-71 lead on a Jori Grady
(Roseburg, Ore. / Umpqua CC) three-pointer with 1:55 remaining. The teams would trade free throws – as Kim
Strunk (Twin Falls, Idaho / Twin Falls HS) hit 1-of-2 freebies with
15 seconds left to give Albertson a 77-74 lead. However, Camille Gardner hit her fourth trey of the game with two
seconds left to tie the score. Enter
Clark, a sophomore transfer from Northwest Nazarene, who caught a pass from Whitney
Martin (Rupert, Idaho / Boise State Univ.) at half-court, took two
dribbles, and set off a celebration when the shot kissed off the glass and
through the net. The win for Albertson
was their first-ever against the Skylights (2-2), the No. 36 ranked team in the
preseason NAIA Division I poll.
BIG SECOND HALF BY PATTERSON: A key in
the win for the Lady ‘Yotes on Friday was the play of transfer Krystn
Patterson (Wells, Nev. / College of Southern Idaho), who rebounded
from first-half foul problems to post a big night. The junior, who played just four minutes in the first half, went
7-for-8 from the floor in the final 20 minutes, scoring 16 points and grabbing
five rebounds in the win.
EIGHT MINUTE STRETCH DOES COYOTES IN: A 12-1
run midway through the first half gave Montana State-Northern a lead they would
never relinquish, as the Skylights defeated Albertson College, 72-55, in a
women's basketball contest in the Armory Gymnasium on Saturday night. Michele VanDyke scored 14 first half points
for Northern, who sprinted out to a 43-24 edge at the break. The junior finished with a game-high 21
points. The Lady 'Yotes shot just
35-percent from the floor and committed 21 turnovers. Albertson did cut a 22-point second half deficit to 55-46 with
ten minutes remaining, but could not get closer. Kim Strunk led the Coyotes with 16 points and six rebounds, while
Jori Grady added 12 points and four assists.
STRUNK HAS BIG WEEKEND: The Lady ‘Yotes lone
returning All-Cascade Conference player got off to an outstanding start in
Montana. Senior Kim Strunk led
Albertson by averaging 17.5 points per game – converting 3-of-5 three-point
attempts, while nailing 10-of-12 free throws.
The four-year member of the team also cracked the career top-ten list
for points scored (643), rebounds (390), blocked shots (29), and games played
(86) after last weekend, while moving into fifth-place on the career free
throws made list (204), and into sixth on the free throws attempts list
(257). Strunk sits just outside the
top-ten in both field goals made (207) and attempted (483) in a career.
GRADY IMPRESSES IN DEBUT: Also having a big debut for
the Coyotes was transfer Jori Grady.
The 5-11 wing was stellar from the floor, converting 11-of-17 shots and
5-of-6 from the line – averaging 15 points a night. She also was unselfish, leading the team with eight assists and
also contributing four steals.
OFF TO SALT LAKE CITY: This weekend, Albertson
will be making their fourth-consecutive appearance at the Downtown Salt Lake
City Holiday Inn Invitational, hosted by Westminster College. The Lady ‘Yotes made their first appearance
in the tourney in 2002, finishing with a 2-1 mark. Each of the last two years, however, the squad has posted a 1-2
record in Payne Gymnasium. All nine
tournament games that ACI has played has been against an NAIA Division I
opponent.
ABOUT GREAT FALLS: The tournament will open with the
Lady ‘Yotes taking on the University of Great Falls. The Argos (1-2) opened the season with a 57-54 win over Thompson
Rivers (B.C), but dropped lopsided games at Black Hills State and South Dakota
Tech. UGF had to replace their top-two
scorers from last season, but senior forward Dana Ball (14.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg) has
played well so far this year. It is the
seventh meeting all-time between the teams, with Albertson holding a 5-1 edge,
however, the Argos topped the Coyotes, 78-65 last season.
ABOUT MONTANA-WESTERN: Friday afternoon, it’s
nationally ranked Montana-Western matching up with the Coyotes. The Bulldogs (3-0) are ranked No. 18 in the
preseason NAIA Division I poll, coming off their sixth-consecutive national
tournament appearance. Western opened
the season with three consecutive home wins, including a 78-56 victory over
Eastern Oregon – however, dropped an 86-57 exhibition decision at the
University of Utah. The ‘Dogs have a
balanced scoring attack, led by Crystal Kain (14.3 ppg, 5.0 apg), Becky O’Neil
(13.0 pgg, 8.7 rpg), and Megan Schmitz (13.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg). Western holds a 7-2 all-time series edge,
including a 70-53 loss to the Bulldogs last season.
ABOUT WESTMINSTER: The tournament concludes with a match-up with host
Westminster, who returns All-America post Shalee Fackrell (28.0 ppg, 9.5
rpg). The Griffins (1-1) opened the
2005-06 season in California, losing a game to No. 6 ranked Point Loma
Nazarene, but topping Concordia-Irvine by two points. Last season, Westminster dropped a home decision to the ‘Yotes,
but knocked off Albertson, 62-58, in Caldwell (game later forfeited back to
ACI). It is the eighth meeting between
the teams – with the Coyotes holding a 5-2 all-time advantage.
NAIA NATIONAL POLL: Two-time defending national
champion Morningside of Iowa was named the unanimous choice as the No. 1 team
in the NAIA Division II in the preseason Top-25 poll. Two Cascade Conference teams were in the poll – Corban was ranked
No. 27, while Oregon Tech was ranked No. 38.
Two other opponents in the NAIA Division I were ranked –
Montana-Western, whom the Lady ‘Yotes play twice this season, is No. 18, and
MSU-Northern at No. 36.

VOLLEYBALL (18-5): Hartman, Gaston earn CCC weekly awards, Lady ‘Yotes
No. 3 seed to CCC Tourney
LAST WEEK: at Oregon Tech (W 3-1); at No. 9
Southern Oregon (L 3-2)
COMING UP: at Cascade Conference Tournament,
Ashland, Ore. – Friday vs. Eastern Oregon, 11 a.m.; with win vs. No. 13
Northwest, 4 p.m.; Saturday – Third-Place Match, 3 p.m.; First-Place Match, 7
p.m. (all times Pacific)
HARTMAN, GASTON EARN CCC AWARDS: After
earning a split on the final weekend of the regular-season, the Albertson
College volleyball team received two of the three Cascade Conference weekly
honors – both going to a pair of seniors.
Middle blocker Fran Hartman (Lakeview, Ore. / Lakeview HS) was
named CCC Player of the Week for the first time in her four-year career,
recording 33 kills in the two matches – including a career-high 21 kills in the
five-game loss at Southern Oregon. The
other award winner was Charity Gaston (Harrisonberg, Va. / James
Madison U.), who was named CCC Libero of the Week for the third time this
season. Gaston averaged six digs per
game over the weekend, including a record-setting match at Southern.
MORE ON GASTON’S NIGHT: Head coach Liz Mendiola said
the performance by Charity Gaston on Saturday night in Ashland was unreal, as
the “designated digger” broke an 11-year school record with 39 digs in the loss
to SOU. She surpassed the mark of 36 digs,
set by Miranda Harris on Oct. 13, 1995 – under the rally-scoring system. Gaston also blew past the rally-scoring
school record of 34 digs set last season by Kahli Mann.
LADY ‘YOTES OFF TO CCC TOURNAMENT: For the
eighth consecutive season, the Coyotes have qualified for the Cascade
Conference postseason tournament, to be held this year at McNeal Hall in
Ashland, Ore. Albertson heads into the
tournament as the No. 3 seed for the fifth time in six seasons (the 2003 squad
entered the tourney as the No. 2 seed).
A win over Eastern Oregon sends the Lady ‘Yotes to a semifinal date with
Northwest, a loss, and a trip to the NAIA Region I tournament hangs in a
committee’s hands. The top-two teams in
the CCC tournament, along with the top-two teams in the Frontier Conference
tournament earn automatic berths to regionals, while the final two slots are
determined by a regional coaches committee.
HISTORY AT CCC TOURNEY: Recent history as the No. 3
seed has not been kind to Albertson College, as the Lady ‘Yotes have dropped
their past two first-round matches.
Last year, Oregon Tech dispatched the Coyotes in three quick games, with
the same result occurring in 2002 against Northwest. However, as the No. 3 seed in 2000 and 2001, Albertson was able
to open with wins – and also secure spots in the regional tournament. Since 1994, the ‘Yotes have posted a 8-12
mark, with 2003’s runner-up finish being the top mark for the squad.
SIZING UP THE FIELD: Tournament host and top-seeded Southern
Oregon is definitely the team to beat.
The No. 9 ranked Raiders (25-3) are the four-time defending NAIA Region
I champion and come into the scrum riding a 17-game win streak. Hoping to unseat SOU is No. 13 ranked Northwest,
whose only two losses this season have come at the hands of the Raiders. The second-seeded Eagles (24-2) lost to
Southern in five games at the 2004 regional tournament. A banged-up Oregon Tech squad looks to
make a CCC tourney run for the second straight year. The fourth-seeded Owls (16-9), who have battled injuries over the
past two weeks, advanced to the tournament title match last year after
upsetting No. 3 Albertson and No. 2 Northwest.
Fifth-seeded Concordia is a team that no one in the tournament
wants to play on a neutral court. The
Cavaliers (14-12) have been playing well as of late, including a four-game win
over OIT. Rounding out the six-team
field is Eastern Oregon, who have advanced to the postseason for the
first time since 2001. The Mountaineers
(8-11) must change their trend from the regular-season – as Eastern went a
combined 0-10 against the teams in the 2005 CCC tournament.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: The final 2005 regional poll of
the regular season was released on Monday, with the ‘Yotes sitting at No. 3 for
the seventh consecutive week. Southern
Oregon maintained the top spot with Northwest sitting at No. 2. After the Coyotes in the poll are Oregon
Tech, Westminster, Great Falls, Montana-Western, Montana State-Northern,
Carroll, and Concordia. Southern is
ranked No. 9 in last week’s NAIA poll, with Northwest at No. 13. Both Albertson and Oregon Tech received
votes.
RECORD SETTING NIGHT IN LOSS AT SOUTHERN: Despite a
aforementioned record-setting night by Albertson College libero Charity Gaston,
the No. 9 ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team won their 17th-consecutive
match, topping the Lady 'Yotes 20-30, 30-25, 30-23, 23-30, 15-12 at a raucous
McNeal Hall on Saturday night. The
Raiders saw an 11-10 lead in the decisive Game 5 grow to 14-10 on the
strength of kills from Mia Wortel and Rachael Baran, and a block from
Wortel. After the Coyotes scored on back-to-back points, a Wortel spike
sent the crowd of 600 home happy. The
Coyotes dominated Game 1, jumping out to a 12-5 lead in the win. Southern
would use a five-point push to take Game 2, then sprint to a 14-5 lead to take
Game 3. Albertson jumped out to a 14-5 lead in Game 4 to send the match
to the max. The finale saw eight ties, before a Raider tandem block broke
an 8-8 tie, and SOU would not trail again.
Fran Hartman led the 'Yotes with 21 kills and five blocks, with Katie
Hogue (Sparks, Nev. / Reed HS) recording 15 kills, seven
blocks. Erin Cherrington (Granby, Colo. / Middle Park HS)
registered 67 assists and 14 digs in the loss. Southern was paced by 17
kills from Nicholette Lebel.
ANOTHER RECORD FALLS: In the loss at Southern,
the Lady ‘Yotes also established a new school record for hitting attempts in a
match. Albertson recorded 259 swings in
the match, seven more than the club registered on Oct. 13, 1995 against Western
Baptist.
COYOTES COMPLETE SWEEP OF OIT: The
Albertson College volleyball team won their fifth-straight match, picking up a
huge road win at Oregon Tech Friday night, a 35-33, 30-22, 15-30, 30-24 victory
at Danny Miles Court. A see-saw Game 1
saw OIT take a 29-27, but neither the
Owls, nor the 'Yotes could put the game away. After Tech failed on three
game-points, and Albertson missed on two game-points, the Coyotes broke a 33-33
tie with a Katie Hogue kill and an OIT attack error to take the opening win. Albertson used an 8-1 push late in Game 2 to
get the win, while OIT jumped out to a 16-3 lead to win Game 3. The
'Yotes closed out the victory by scoring nine of the final 12 points in Game 4,
capped by a Jennifer Horn (Notus, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC)
ace. Hogue had a big night for the
victors, recording 11 kills, five blocks and four aces. Kathryn Ely
(La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS) led the club with 14 kills, while Fran
Hartman added 12 spikes.
CAREER RECORD BOOK: Three players are climbing on the
career record list heading into this weekends action. Erin Cherrington reached the 3,000 career assist mark last
week (3,013, third-most in school history), while remaining in fourth-place on
the all-time ace list with 128. Fran
Hartman now has 907 kills, sixth-best in Coyote history (87 behind
fifth-place), while she also moved into sixth-place all-time with 242 blocks (three
behind fifth-place). In less than two
seasons, Katie Hogue now has 220 blocks, vaulting her into seventh-place
all-time.
SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS: The 2005 Lady ‘Yotes look
to make a dent in the single-season record book when the year is complete. Erin Cherrington currently is on pace to
break her own school-record for assists per game, Charity Gaston is on pace to
top the school-record for digs per game, while Fran Hartman is currently on
pace to break the school-record for attack percentage.
MORE INFORMATION: Updated information and statistics on the 2005 volleyball team can be found on Albertson volleyball official website at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/vball.htm. CROSS COUNTRY: Coyote Men earn at-large berth to NAIA Championships, Edwards earns individual berth to nationals for second-straight year
LAST WEEK: at Cascade Conference / NAIA Region I Meet – Men placed second in CCC, fourth in Region I; Women placed fourth in CCC, seventh in Region I
COMING UP: at NAIA Championships, Louisville, Ky., November 19.
‘YOTES HEADED TO NATIONALS: The Albertson College men's
cross country team, along with top women's runner Shannon Edwards (Sherwood,
Ore. / Eastern Oregon U.), were among the qualifiers announced Monday to
participate in the NAIA Championships, set for Nov. 19 at Tom Sawyer Park in
Louisville, Ky. "I am
extremely excited about the news," said head coach Pat McCurry.
"When we began the program, our goal was to be able to compete for a
national berth after our third season. To be able to take the men's team
to national in just our second year is a testament to the hard work each
individual has committed to this season." The Coyotes were one of three at-large teams from the NAIA
Region I to be selected - joining Southern Oregon and Simon Fraser, while
regional champion, British Columbia, received an automatic bid. Joining the men's team at nationals is Edwards, who
completed a stellar regular-season with a ninth-place finish in the regional
race - a second-place finish among Cascade Conference runners. She was
the first at-large runner taken from the NAIA Region I. "Shannon is really peaking at the right
time," said McCurry. "She showed at regionals that she is ready
to compete at a national level. On the
women's side, Simon Fraser, British Columbia, Eastern Oregon, and Lewis-Clark
State earned team bids to the championship.
MEN
SOLID IN PORTLAND: A mud bog of a race course awaited the ‘Yotes at
Lents Park in Portland on Saturday, as Albertson competed in the Cascade
Conference / NAIA Region I championships.
Despite the tough conditions, the men’s team placed second in the CCC
and fourth in the region – earning two runners All-Conference and All-Region
honors. David Fluckiger (Herisou,
Switz. / Va. Commonwealth U.) had a banner race for the Coyote men, who
came into the meet ranked No. 11 in the NAIA. The Swiss native traversed
the 8,000-meter course in 26:06.04, third-place in the CCC and sixth overall.
Joining him on the honor roll was Jacob Haas (Portland, Ore. /
Eastern Oregon U.), whose time of 26:16.96 placed him fifth in the league
and tenth overall.
WOMEN
COMPETE WELL: Led by Shannon Edwards outstanding race, the Lady ‘Yotes finished
fourth in the CCC race and seventh in the region. Albertson also got solid races from Natalie Hatch (Emmett,
Idaho / Willamette U.) and Melissa Dilley (Boise, Idaho /
