WOMEN’S SOCCER: Resurgent Lady ‘Yotes head off for
big battles at Evergreen and No. 5 Concordia
LAST WEEK: vs. Southern Oregon (W 2-0), vs.
Oregon Tech (W 1-0)
COMING UP: at Evergreen, Friday, 1 p.m.
(PDT); at No. 5 Concordia, Saturday, 1 p.m. (PDT)
HOME SWEEP: The Albertson College women’s
soccer team continued their stellar play in 2005, opening up their home Cascade
Conference schedule by running off weekend wins over Southern Oregon and Oregon
Tech. It was the first time since the
2002 season that the Lady ‘Yotes have swept a home weekend series – that season,
Albertson defeated Southern 3-2 and OIT 3-1.
BEST START EVER: OFF TO BEST START SINCE 1995: The 5-1
start for the Lady ‘Yotes in 2005 is the best start for the team in school
history, dating back to the inception of the program in 1989. The previous best starts for the team
included the 1995 season, when Albertson started the season 1-1-3. That year, the Coyotes led the entire NAIA
with just nine goals allowed – which is tenth on the NAIA all-time list. The 1993 team also got off to a hot start,
when the Lady ‘Yotes opened the season 4-1 under Hiro Wantanabe. Albertson finished that season with a 6-6-1
record.
NEW SHUTOUT STREAK: Another record by the 2005 club
has been the rash of shutouts the Coyotes have inflicted on opponents. Albertson has run off four consecutive
shutouts – and has not allowed a goal in a contest during the month of
September. The Lady ‘Yotes had recorded
three-straight shutouts on two different occasions – once in 1989, the other
during the 2000 season. What is
staggering is that Albertson has not allowed an opponent to score in 363
minutes, dating back to an own goal allowed against Central Washington on
August 27. The squad has not allowed an
opponent to put a ball in the net in a whopping 491 minutes. Incidentally, during last season’s 1-16
campaign, Albertson did not hold an opponent scoreless.
MORE ON THE HOT START: With five wins already in
the books, Albertson has already surpassed the win totals in ten of the first
16 seasons of Lady ‘Yote soccer. In
fact, only two teams in school history have won more than six games in a season
– the 1989 team that went 8-3, and the 2002 team that went 10-11.
GOOSE EGGS IN FIRST HALF: The Coyotes have been
playing solid soccer from the get-go all season – and you just have to look at
the numbers to tell you that. In six
games this season, Albertson has not allowed a first-half goal this entire
season – a span of 270 minutes. During
the opening 45 minutes of the six games, the Lady ‘Yotes have outscored their
opponents, 6-0.
TOUGH WEEKEND CHORE: If the Lady ‘Yotes are to remain
in first place, they will have to compete well with the best the Cascade
Conference North Division has to offer – and have to do it on the road. Up first on Friday is Evergreen State,
who is off to their best start in school history as well. The Geoducks (4-0, 1-0 CCC) earned votes for
the first time in the NAIA national poll since the mid-1990s. Evergreen is led by keeper Carly Stewart,
who has allowed only one goal this season – and recorded shutout wins over Pacific
Lutheran, Morningside (Iowa), and Cascade.
The offensive attack, which scored 15 goals in a win over Cascade (one
of only 19 teams in NAIA history to score 15-or-more goals in a game) on
Saturday, is led by All-American Alisha White (six goals, four assists) and
Kate Green (five goals, three assists).
White had four goals and four assists in the romp over Cascade – which is
tied for tenth-most in NAIA history in a single game. Evergreen swept the series from Albertson last season, winning
4-2 in Olympia and 3-1 in Caldwell. It
is the 20th meeting between the programs, with Evergreen holding a
13-6 edge. Saturday, the road gets even
tougher, as Albertson meets fifth-ranked Concordia. The Cavaliers (5-1, 1-0 CCC) advanced to the
NAIA championship game last season – returning a solid group that has had 12
different players score goals this season.
Justine Pronovost (four goals, one assist) leads Concordia in scoring, a
team that has defeated Mary (N.D.), Trinity International (Ill.) and Carroll
(Mont.) – all ranked at one time in the NAIA Top-25. The Cavs swept the season series from the Coyotes last year and
have won 15-in-a-row over Albertson; leading the all-time series, 16-2-4.
FRANK SOLID IN GOAL: A key for the Lady ‘Yotes has been
the play of Candice Frank (Boise, Idaho / Rocky Mountain Coll.) in
goal. The senior, who allowed four
goals per game last year, ranks second in the CCC with a 0.55 goals against
average and a .897 save percentage. She
has also been in goal for all four shutouts this season.
REVENGE VS. SOUTHERN OREGON: An outstanding defensive performance
and a pair of second half goals helped the Albertson College women's soccer
team to a 2-0 shutout of Southern Oregon on Friday at Symms Field. Transfer Nikki Anderson (Citrus Heights, Calif. /
Sierra CC) tucked home a feed from Allison Rupert (Boise, Idaho /
Capital HS) in the right corner of the net in the 51st minute to give
Albertson the edge. The 'Yotes would add an insurance goal in the 60th
minute, as Sarah Barlow (Layton, Utah / Layton HS) gave Rupert a
nice through-ball, who then found Laura Fink (Boise, Idaho /
Centennial HS)on the right side of the box, where she one-timed a shot into
the Upper V. Southern, which had won the past
three meetings between the teams, saw Dacarie Robertson hit the left post on a
blast in the 12th minute, and a Kara Bradach shot from inside the 18 stopped in
the 84th minute.
LADY ‘YOTES SMOKIN’ VS. OREGON TECH: Head coach Aisha Reed said
that last season's 1-16 mark for the Albertson College women's soccer team was
a rebuilding year. Rebuild did they ever, as the 2005 Lady 'Yotes have
the best start to a season in program history, thanks to a 1-0 shutout of
Oregon Tech on Saturday at Symms Field.
Despite
dominating the possession throughout the game, the Coyotes managed just a Laura
Fink goal in the 25th minute, off a feed from Jayne Saunders (Emmett,
Idaho / Emmett HS). Albertson peppered OIT keeper Nicole
Pence all afternoon, racking up 23 shots, but the senior made nine saves,
including blocking a Fink shot and a follow from Leah Roach (Boise,
Idaho / Timberline HS) in the 65th minute. The Owls had their best
look all afternoon in the 84th minute, as a Brandi Bocchi shot sailed just over
the crossbar.

VOLLEYBALL (6-2, 3-1 CCC): Ely, Cherrington earn CCC
honors after sweep, host tough Southern and OIT squads
LAST WEEK: at Concordia (W 3-1), at Corban (W
3-1)
COMING UP: vs. No. 8 Southern Oregon, Friday,
7 p.m.; vs. Oregon Tech, Saturday, 7 p.m.
LADY ‘YOTES SWEEP ON ROAD: After
seeing their 16-match home win streak ended the week before, the Albertson
College volleyball team had a mission on their mind – get two wins in the
Willamette Valley. Win they did, as the
Lady ‘Yotes took care of business, knocking off both Concordia and Corban in
four games, keeping themselves just a half-game back of first place in the
Cascade Conference standings.
FIRST SWEEP SINCE?: Winning against both Concordia,
who dominated the CCC in volleyball from 1998-2002 (including winning
69-consecutive league matches), and Corban on the road has been tough. This year marks the first time that
Albertson has won matches at both schools in the same season since 1996 (a 3-0
win in Portland, a 3-2 win in Salem).
ELY NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: For her
efforts in the two matches, Albertson outside hitter Kathryn Ely (La
Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS) was named Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I
Player of the Week. The true freshman
set a career-high with 22 kills in both wins against Concordia and Corban. Ely had a .374 attack percentage for the
weekend, along with averaging nearly four digs per game, including a
career-high 16 digs vs. Corban. She
ranks eighth in the CCC in kills per game in conference-only play.
CHERRINGTON NAMED SETTER OF THE WEEK: With two
solid matches, Lady ‘Yote setter Erin Cherrington (Granby, Colo. / Middle
Park HS) was named Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I Setter of the
Week. It is the sixth time in her career
that she has received the honor. The
junior led the way with 54 assists and 11 digs in the win over Concordia,
followed by 56 assists and 16 digs in the win over Corban. Cherrington is among the league leaders in
both assists and service aces per game and has moved up the career record list
in both categories. She now has 106
career aces, seventh-most in school history, to go along with 2,281 assists,
third-best in Coyote history.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: Despite two victories this week,
the Coyotes dropped one spot in the NAIA Region I regional rankings. Northwest took over the top spot after
winning the Indiana Wesleyan Tournament, followed by Southern Oregon and Oregon
Tech. Carroll, which beat the ‘Yotes in
five-games in August is fourth, followed by Albertson. Rounding out the top-ten are Montana-Western,
Concordia, MSU-Northern, Rocky Mountain, and Great Falls.
THREE-STRAIGHT VS. CONCORDIA: The
Coyotes won their third-straight match over Concordia on Friday night, topping
the Cavaliers in four games – 29-31, 30-23, 30-26, 30-27. The
three-game win streak comes on the heels of a Concordia 11-match win streak
against the Coyotes that dated back to the 1998 season. Kathryn Ely led the way with 22 kills, while
Anne Parker (Pocatello, Idaho / Century HS) had 13 kills for the
victors.
1-0 IN THE NEW A.W.B. ERA: Chalk up
the first win for the Lady ‘Yotes in the A.W.B. Era – that is the After Western
Baptist Era. Newly named Corban College
could not stand up to the Albertson pressure, falling to the Coyotes in four
games - 30-18, 30-20,
30-32, 32-30. Albertson racked up 70
kills in the match, 22 by Kathryn Ely.
The ‘Yotes also got a career-high 25 digs from freshman libero, Bailey
Wood (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS).
HOGUE, HARTMAN CONTINUE TO DOMINATE: The key
for the early-season success for Albertson has been the play of their two
middle blockers, Katie Hogue (Sparks, Nev. / Reed HS) and Fran
Hartman (Lakeview, Ore. / Lakeview HS). Both had solid matches over the weekend and continue to dominate
the Cascade Conference statistical rankings.
Hogue had 12 kills, five aces, and five blocks at Concordia, followed by
a 14 kills, five aces, four block night against Corban. She leads the CCC in blocks per game (1.56),
while ranking second in the league in total aces (17), third in attack
percentage (.362), and seventh in kills per game (3.19). Hartman had 13 kills and three blocks vs.
Concordia and 16 kills vs. Corban, maintaining her No. 2 slot in the CCC in
attack percentage (.385).
CONFERENCE STAT LEADERS: As a team, the Coyotes lead
the Cascade Conference in aces per game (3.07) and blocks per game (2.55). Other top-ten individuals for Albertson
include Charity Gaston (Harrisonberg, Va. / James Madison Univ.),
who is No. 7 in the league in digs per game (4.25), and Bailey Wood, who is
ninth in the loop in digs per game (3.71).
FROM THE SOUTHERN REACHES THEY COME: Probably
the toughest back-to-back home test for the Lady ‘Yotes this season will take
place this weekend, as the CCC’s two southern-most teams head to town. Up first is Southern Oregon, the
four-time defending NAIA Region I champions.
The Raiders (10-3, 2-1 CCC) come into the week ranked No. 8 in the NAIA
poll, but will drop after losing to Oregon Tech in four. Paul Elliott’s bunch is led by All-CCC
middle blocker Nicholette Le Bel (158 kills, 39 blocks), along with setter
Jaime McCreary (435 assists) and libero Kristin Lilly (245 digs). Albertson split the series with Southern
last year, losing to the Coyotes in three games in Caldwell, but beating the
Purple and Gold in Ashland in four. The
Raiders lead the all-time series, 34-6, dating back to 1990. Saturday, its Oregon Tech headed to
Caldwell, the team that knocked the ‘Yotes out of the 2004 playoffs. The Owls (7-3, 3-0) are tied with Northwest
atop the league standings, thanks to their first win in over a decade at
SOU. Krista Woolsey (3.5 kills per
game) has been the go-to player on the outside for OIT, but it is setter Megan
Albertson (1.9 k/g, 10.5 a/g, 2.9 d/g, 0.9 b/g) that is the key for the
Owls. Tech won 2-of-3 meetings from the
Coyotes last year, but Albertson holds a 16-7 all-time series edge.

CROSS COUNTRY: Coyote men win Hampton Inn title,
look to move up in NAIA national poll
LAST WEEK: at Hampton Inn and Suites Fall
Harrier Classic – Men (1st place), Women (5th place)
COMING UP: at Willamette Invitational, Salem,
Ore. – October 1
COYOTE MEN WIN MEET: Led by a third-place finish by
All-American David Fluckiger (Herisou, Switzerland / Virginia
Commonwealth Univ.), the Albertson College men's cross country team won
their first-ever team event, taking home the crown at the 2005 Hampton Inn
Invitational, at West Park in Nampa. The
Coyotes, ranked No. 24 in the preseason NAIA poll, had five runners in the
Top-20 of the race - all under the 20-minute mark in the six-kilometer race. Albertson outdistanced a deep field by 18
points - a field which included NAIA No. 17 ranked Eastern Oregon, regional
rival Lewis-Clark State, along with NCAA Division I Boise State and NCAA
Division II Northwest Nazarene. Fluckiger
finished in a time of 19:00.05, with Jacob Haas (Portland, Ore. /
Eastern Oregon Univ.) finishing seventh (19:21.84), Jesse Chlebeck (Eagan,
Minn. / Eagan HS) tenth (19:29.15), Tyler Hopper (Caldwell, Idaho
/ Caldwell HS) in 16th (19:43.02), and freshman Sam Hardy (Eagle,
Idaho / Eagle HS) in 20th (19:49.28).
LOOKING AT THE MEET: Unattached runners took home five
of the top eight spots, while Fluckiger was the top non-NCAA Division I runner in
the field. Haas and Chlebeck stayed
with a pack of five runners throughout the race, as did Hopper and Hardy.
WHERE COULD THE ‘YOTES END UP: With the team
victory, it is conceivable that the Coyotes will move into the NAIA Top-20 when
the national poll is released on Thursday.
Albertson should be ranked No. 4 in the region, behind Southern Oregon,
British Columbia, and Simon Fraser – as they defeated Eastern Oregon handily
this weekend (the previous No. 17 ranked team). Another team to look for is Corban, who may crack the rankings
after an impressive victory at the Lewis & Clark Open in Portland.
EDWARDS TOP WOMEN’S FINISHER: Things
were not as rosy for the Albertson women on Saturday, as the short-handed
Coyotes placed fifth at the local meet.
Shannon Edwards (Sherwood, Ore. / Eastern Oregon Univ.) led
the Lady ‘Yote contingent with a seventh-place finish in 15:10.52. However, the next finisher for Albertson was
nearly a minute behind the senior, and the Coyotes were a runner down due to
illness.
COMPARED TO LAST SEASON: Last year, the ‘Yotes
opened the season in Nampa at the same Hampton Inn Invite, run on the same
course – what a difference a year makes.
In 2004, no men’s runner cracked the 20-minute mark; this year, all five
scoring runners were under the 20-minute barrier. Comparing the top-five times this year and last, Albertson shaved
nearly 13-full minutes from their time.
Same can be said on the women’s front, as the Lady ‘Yotes took one
minute and 13 seconds off their team time from last season.
COMING UP: The Coyote harriers will be off
for the next two weeks to concentrate on training for their first test at the
5,000-meters for the women and 8,000-meters for the men. Albertson will compete at the Willamette
Invitational in Salem, Ore. on October 1 – billed as the biggest cross country
race west of the Mississippi.
COYOTES TO HOST A MEET: Put October 22nd
on your calendar, as the Albertson College cross country team will host their
first-ever meet in Caldwell. The
5,000-meter women’s race and the 8,000-meter men’s race will be run on the
Albertson campus, with a two kilometer loop winding through the institutions
acreage. The start-finish line will be
near the Village Apartments, next to the Coyote softball field, off Ash Street.

top times, can be found on the Albertson cross country official website at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/xc.htm.
MEN’S SOCCER (0-3): Coyotes struggle in California,
head to Salt Lake for tough Westminster Invitational
LAST WEEK: at California Baptist (L 2-0), at
The Masters (L 6-2), at Hope International (L 1-0)
COMING UP: at Westminster, Saturday, 2:30
p.m.; vs. No. 15 Holy Names, Sunday, Noon (both games at West Jordan Soccer
Complex, Salt Lake City)
‘YOTES STRUGGLE IN CALIFORNIA: The
Albertson College men’s soccer team fundraised extensively over the off-season
to be able to face outstanding competition in Southern California to open the
2005 season. What the Coyotes received
was an education in turf management and a trio of losses during their four-day
stay in Paradise. Albertson played a
pair of tight matches against Cal Baptist and Hope International, but could not
find the net, and had a second-half debacle in a lopsided loss at The Masters. “One thing that we were never able to figure
out was the speed of the game,” said head coach Brian Smith. “The short Bermuda grass was an outstanding
surface to play on, but the ball reacts
as if you are playing on artificial turf – something our young team could not
adjust to.”
OFF TO WORST START SINCE?: In the
20-plus year history of the Coyote soccer program, an 0-3 start is very
rare. In fact, only three previous
College of Idaho or Albertson College teams have started out with
three-straight losses. The last team to
start 0-3 was the 1996 club, which finished the season, 7-11. That season, along with the 1987 season (in
which the ‘Yotes went 7-6-2), saw the squad lose their first four game – which is
the school record for futility at the start of a season. On the flip side, the record for
season-opening wins is seven, set during the 1990 season.
OFFENSIVE WOES PLAGUE TEAM: Over the
years, the Coyotes have been one of the top-scoring teams not only in the
region, but regularly among the NAIA’s elite teams in goals and assists. However, Albertson was shutout twice on the
road trip, after failing to score in only one match last year. The ‘Yotes opponents had a decisive edge in
shots (65-23), shots on goal (29-10), and corners (25-5).
HUBER SOLID IN GOAL: Coach Smith was very pleased with
the efforts during the trip of keeper Ryan Huber (Eagle, Idaho /
Eagle HS). The senior lost both of
his starts, however, allowed only three goals, while facing 43 shots in the two
matches. Huber ranks second in the
Cascade Conference in goals against average (1.50), ranks second in save
percentage (.812), and is second in saves per game (6.5). “Huber was outstanding,” said Smith. “He kept us in both the Cal Baptist and Hope
International games, including a great 1-v-1 save vs. Hope.”
LOSS TO CAL BAPTIST: Cal Baptist broke a scoreless tie
with a goal in the 69th minute, as the Lancers defeated Albertson,
2-0, last Friday in Riverside. The ‘Yotes
managed just six shots and two drives on goal in the match, which was in doubt
until the final five minutes, where CBU tallied a goal on a breakaway, caused
by an Albertson push into their scoring zone.
RED CARD HURTS AT THE MASTERS: The ‘Yotes
scored their first two goals, but allowed their most goals in a game since the
1998 season in a 6-2 loss at The Masters.
Mitch White (Boise, Idaho / Gonzaga U.) got Albertson on
the board in the 22nd minute, drilling a ball into the net from
25-yards out. The lead would be gone
three minutes later, as the Mustangs headed home a corner kick. The turning point came just before the
halftime whistle, when Albertson was handed a red card – forcing the Coyotes to
play the second half a man down. TMC
took advantage, peppering the Coyotes with five-second half goals. Reserve striker Scott Ward (Rexburg,
Idaho / Madison HS) did find the net late in the match off a John
Mitchell (Boise, Idaho / Boise State) assist to complete the
scoring. The last time an Albertson
team allowed six-or-more goals in a match was a 7-1 loss to Concordia on Oct.
3, 1998 (Albertson lost a 7-3 decision to Simon Fraser in the 1999 regional
tournament, but the score was later changed to a 1-0 forfeit win for the
Coyotes).
SHORT-HANDED TEAM LOSES: A goal by Hope
International in the 55th minute was all that was needed, as the
Royals knocked off Albertson, 1-0, on Monday in Fullerton. The Coyotes, who were playing without the
services of starting defenders Shane Carmody (Boise, Idaho /
Timberline HS) and Sam Reed (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS), along
with midfielder Scott Fuller (Boise, Idaho / Fullerton State) –
had a chance to tie the score late, but a blast from Joe Chandler (Nampa,
Idaho / Nampa HS) banged off the crossbar.
CONFERENCE NUMBERS: Things are not bright for the
Coyotes in the Cascade Conference statistical categories, thanks to the tough
start in California. Albertson ranks last in the seven-team league in points
scored, goals scored, goals per game, assists, and assists per game.
TOUGH TOURNEY IN SALT LAKE: Things do
not get easier for the Coyotes this weekend, as Albertson heads to Salt Lake
City to defend their title at the Westminster Soccer Invitational. The ‘Yotes open up play against host Westminster,
who is looking to rebound after missing the regional tournament last
season. The Griffins (5-2-1) have
played their first eight games at home – with their losses coming to the hands
of CSU-Monterey Bay and Montana State-Billings. It is the 25th meeting between the regional rivals,
with the series deadlocked at 11-11-2.
Sunday, No. 15 ranked Holy Names meets the Coyotes in the
first-ever meeting between the teams.
The Hawks (0-2-1) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2004 NAIA
national tournament and return last season’s leading scorer, Guilherme Souza,
who led the nation with 34 goals. HNU
has played three nationally-ranked teams on the road – losing to No. 13
Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and No. 8 Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.), while playing to a draw
with No. 14 Mobile (Ala.). It doesn’t
get any easier – as the ‘Yotes will continue their seven-game season-opening
road trip with matches at No. 16 Evergreen and Northwest on Sept.23-24.
LAST YEAR: The Coyotes defeated Embry-Riddle
(Ariz.) 2-0 and Westminster 1-0 to take home their first Westminster Soccer
Invitational crown.
