MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM RANKED NO.
24 IN PRESEASON POLL: The Albertson College men's cross country team has
made a splash on the national scene in only their second-year back from a three
decade hiatus. The Coyotes earned a No. 24 ranking in the NAIA preseason
poll, released Monday. The Coyotes, who
finished fourth in the 2004 Cascade Conference championships in their first
year, are one of five NAIA Region I teams in the poll. Joining Albertson
is No. 3 Southern Oregon, No. 5 British Columbia, No. 10 Simon Fraser, and No.
17 Eastern Oregon. The Albertson men
return their anchor, indoor track All-American David Fluckiger, along
with Tyler Hopper - who both competed at last years' NAIA
Championships. The 'Yotes also had a deep recruiting class to possibly
help the four, five, and six positions.
The women's cross country team, which finished fifth at the 2004 CCC
championships, was picked to finish fifth again in the league preseason coaches
poll. Five teams from the Region I, including conference members
Northwest and Eastern Oregon, were in the preseason NAIA national poll. The Albertson women return their anchor as
well, senior Shannon Edwards. Albertson
opens the season next Saturday at the NNU Invitational.
BASEBALL PLAYERS IN CANADA: A group of Albertson College
baseball players are among those competing for the Caldwell Coyotes in the 2005
Grand Forks International baseball tournament.
The squad dropped their first game on Wednesday to the Reno Astros (5-4)
and lost on Thursday to the Tinseltown Terror from Los Angeles (10-4). Caldwell plays their third game of the
tournament on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. (PDT) against the Victoria Mavericks
of Canada. Greg Stalling has led
the way in the wood bat tournament, going 5-for-8 with a home run and five RBI,
while incoming freshman Bryan Champ is 4-for-6 at the plate. Complete tournament coverage can be found at
www.grandforksbaseball.com.
WOMEN’S SOCCER (2-1): Lady ‘Yotes win NNU
Tourney, open CCC play at Cascade
LAST WEEK: exhibition vs. Treasure Valley CC
(W 5-1), at Northwest Nazarene (W 3-2), vs. Central Washington (L 1-0), vs.
Eastern Oregon (W 3-0), exhibition vs. Walla Walla CC (L 3-1)
COMING UP: at Cascade, Friday, 3 p.m. (PDT),
exhibition vs. Alumni, Saturday, 10 a.m.
COYOTES UPSET NORTHWEST NAZARENE: Newcomer Erin
Quinn (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS) flicked
home a loose ball in the 88th minute, as the Albertson College women's soccer
team opened the 2005 season with a 3-2 upset win over rival Northwest Nazarene
at Halle Field last Thursday. Tied 2-2
late in the game, a cross across the goal was misplayed by NNU keeper Amanda
Merrlee, with Quinn finding the open net for the game winner. The ‘Yotes got on the board in the 32nd
minute, as Allie Dufault (Irvine, Calif. / University HS) took a
feed from Nikki Anderson (Citrus
Heights, Calif. / Sierra CC) and beat Merrlee for a 1-0 lead. The
'Yotes would make it 2-0 just after halftime with a Jayne Saunders (Emmett,
Idaho / Emmett HS) unassisted goal.
The Crusaders would quickly tie the score before the 50th minute, as
Katy McNutt rapped home a pair of goals. However, the Coyote defense
would put a clamp down, allowing just four shots the rest of the afternoon.
FIRST WIN VS. NNU SINCE: It was the ‘Yotes first win
vs. NNU since a 4-3 win over the Crusaders in Caldwell on Oct. 1, 2003. The victory was the first for Albertson in
Nampa since September 26, 1997 - a 1-0
win over the Crusaders.
TOUGH LOSS TO CENTRAL: An own goal by the Albertson defense in the 87th
minute allowed Central Washington a 1-0 victory over the Coyotes in a women's
soccer non-conference match at Symms Field on Saturday. Although the Wildcats controlled the tempo throughout, they
could not muster a ball past Albertson keeper Candice Frank (Boise,
Idaho / Rocky Mountain College) until Adele Johnson (Riverton,
Utah / Waterford HS) tried to clear a corner kick by CWU, but it instead
found the net. Central held a 13-6 edge in shots
and had a 7-5 edge in corners.
LADY ‘YOTES BLANK
EASTERN: Albertson College took home the
crown at the 2005 Les Schwab Invitational, as the Coyotes handed Eastern Oregon
a 3-0 defeat at Halle Field. Albertson got on the board in the 17th minute,
when Leah Roach (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) pounced on a loose
ball in the Mountaineers box and ripped a shot into the right side of the net.
The Coyotes would put the game away with two second half goals. The first
was a nice combination, as Adele Johnson and Jayne Saunders worked the ball to
freshman Allie Dufault, who beat Eastern keeper Sarah Androlewicz for her
second goal of the year. Dufault would then chip a ball to Allison
Rupert (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) in the final minute, as the
junior scored to make it 3-0. Keeper Candice Frank turned away 11 shots,
four on goal, to record her first career shutout.
FIRST SHUTOUT SINCE: The win for the Lady 'Yotes (2-1) gives the club one more win than they had all of 2004 and was their first shutout since a 1-0 win over Eastern on October 7, 2003. It also ended a Lady ‘Yote three match losing streak to Eastern.
THEN AND NOW: Three games into last season, the
Albertson women’s soccer team had given up 10 goals and looked an 0-3 record in
the face. This season, the Lady ‘Yotes
are 2-1, and an own goal away from having an unbeaten record going into
conference play.
CCC PLAY OPENS UP FRIDAY: Albertson opens up Cascade
Conference action on Friday afternoon, traveling to Portland to meet Cascade
College. The T-Birds (0-16 in 2004)
have lost 31 consecutive matches dating back to the 2002 season, but have a new
head coach in Jeremy Schwartz. It is
the 13th meeting between the teams, with Albertson holding an 8-4
edge.
ALUMNI GAME: The Coyotes will hold their
first-ever Alumni Saturday at Symms Field, as the women’s team will have an
Alumni scrimmage at 10 a.m., with the men’s team to follow with a scrimmage at
12:30 p.m. A post-game barbeque will
follow.

VOLLEYBALL (3-1): Coyotes open CCC play at home, proceeds to benefit Hurricane
Katrina Relief Fund
LAST WEEK: at Holiday Inn Express NAIA Region
I Cross-Over – vs. Montana State-Northern (W 3-0), vs. Westminster (W 3-2), vs.
Lewis-Clark State (W 3-1), vs. Carroll (L 3-2)
COMING UP: vs. Evergreen, Friday, 7 p.m.; vs.
No. 23 Northwest, Saturday, 7 p.m.
HOME STREAK ON THE LINE: With the 2005 home schedule
opening up on Friday, the Lady ‘Yotes will put a school-record 15-match win
streak on the line against Evergreen and Northwest. Albertson was a perfect 11-0 in the J.A.
Albertson Activities Center last season, and have not lost a match at home
since Oct. 25, 2003 against Concordia.
ABOUT THE CLAMS AND EAGLES: Evergreen
comes to Caldwell to open their season hoping to erase a tough 2004
campaign. The Geoducks (6-21, 1-17 in
2004) return their top-two hitters from last year, outside Emily Peterson and
blocker Mattie Blevins. The Coyotes
swept the season series with Evergreen last year and holds a 6-2 all-time edge,
including a 4-0 mark at home. Northwest
comes to town with something to prove, as the Eagles (4-0 in 2005) were the
NAIA Region I runners-up last year and the No. 23 ranked team in the NAIA
preseason poll. Head coach Shaun
Kupferberg returns a deep line-up, featuring freshman blocker Sara Bendorf, who
averaged 4.3 kills at the Holiday Inn Tournament, along with returning starters
Emily Marquez, Jessie Buck, Lisa Langmade, and Dayna Casseday. Albertson split their two matches with the
Eagles last year and holds a 15-3 edge in the all-time series.
SOLID PLAY IN LEWISTON: Albertson opened up the
2005 season at the Holiday Inn Express NAIA Region I Cross-Over in Lewiston and
executed very well, winning three of their four matches. The ‘Yotes recorded victories on the opening
day against MSU-Northern and a much-improved Westminster club, stopped
Lewis-Clark State for the third consecutive time, before falling in five-games
to Carroll in the finale. Overall in
the tournament, the Cascade Conference held a 11-5 advantage over the Frontier
Conference.
HOGUE DOMINATES THE MIDDLE: Returning
CCC Freshman of the Year, Katie Hogue (Sparks, Nev. / Reed HS) got
off to a resounding start to the 2005 season, leading the Coyotes with a 3.35
kill and 1.29 block per game average over the weekend. Hogue also recorded a team-high .347 hitting
percent, as she set personal-bests with 17 kills in matches vs. Westminster and
Carroll.
FRESHMEN PLAY KEY ROLES:
Two freshmen also got considerable playing time in the
collegiate debuts. Outside hitter Kathryn
Ely (La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS) started on the left side and
averaged 2.7 kills per game, including a team-high 13 kills in the win over
Montana State-Northern. Libero Bailey
Wood (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) also showed no freshman jitters,
averaging nearly four digs per game, including a 24-dig match vs. Westminster
and a 23-dig match vs. Carroll.
COYOTES
TO PLAY FOR HURRICANE KATRINA FUND: The Albertson College volleyball team will do their part to
help the ongoing relief effort in the wake of Hurricane Katrina during opening
of Cascade Conference play this weekend. The Coyotes, who open up their home schedule with matches
against Evergreen State and Northwest University, will not charge admission to
their two matches. In place of an admission fee, the 'Yotes ask that all fans
make donations at the game to the American Red Cross - with the money to go
directly to their Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. "It is a devastating situation in the Gulf Coast
right now," said Coyote head coach Liz Mendiola. Anything
that we can do, or our fans can do, will really help the relief efforts.

COMING UP: exhibition vs. Albertson Alumni,
September 3, 12:30 p.m.
‘YOTES OPEN UP WITH EXHIBITION WIN OVER WALLA WALLA C.C.: Second-year
head coach Brian Smith was overly pleased with the Coyotes’ play in the
season opening scrimmage against Walla Walla Community College. “It is night and day comparing where we are
after the first scrimmage this year from last season,” Smith said after
Albertson rallied for a 4-3 decision.
“This is the most close-knit team that I have seen in my career.” The ‘Yotes fell behind 3-1 at the break, but
used a penalty kick, a one-time blast from senior Joe Chandler (Nampa,
Idaho / Nampa HS), and a late goal from junior all-star Mitch White (Boise,
Idaho / Gonzaga U.) to get the win.
ALUMNI GAME SATURDAY: The annual Albertson
College Alumni men’s soccer game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at
