LAST WEEK: vs. Dixie State (W 3-0); at Corban (W 3-0); at Concordia (W 3-0)

YOTES CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT: With their victory over Corban on Friday night, the ACI volleyball team clinched a berth in the Cascade Conference postseason tournament for the eighth-consecutive season.  In doing so, the Lady Yotes have an opportunity to defend their 2005 CCC postseason tournament crown.

HOSTING THE PLAYOFFS?: The Coyotes hold a two-game lead on second-place Southern Oregon and a three-game lead on third-place Oregon Tech – holding all tiebreakers with the two teams due to home-and-home sweeps by the Yotes.  The winner of the CCC regular season title earns the right to host the CCC postseason tournament, to be held Nov. 10-11, and the right to host the NAIA Region I tournament, to be held Nov. 16-18.  ACI has never won a regular-season CCC title since the league went to the current round-robin format in 1988.

STREAKS GALORE FOR THE YOTES: Impressive numbers dot the landscape of the 2006 volleyball season for ACI, as the Lady Yotes have multiple streaks still alive.  The squad has dropped their first game in CCC play at Southern Oregon on Sept. 8, and have now won their past 33 in a row (won 39-of-40 games played in league play this year).  ACI has won 15-consecutive matches at home, dating back to last season, and has won 32-consecutive matches against teams not ranked in the NAIA poll (or others’ receiving votes).

NATIONAL RANKING: The Yotes were ranked No. 11 in the sixth NAIA volleyball poll of the regular-season, released last Wednesday by the national office in Olathe, Kan.  The Yotes remained at No. 11 for the third-straight week, equaling the highest ranking in program history. Six others – No. 1 National American (S.D.), No. 6 Columbia (Mo.), No. 12 Cedarville (Ohio), No. 22 Lindenwood (Mo.), No. 23 Westminster (Utah), and Southern Oregon, were among the ACI opponents this season in the Top-25 and others receiving votes.  A trio of teams ranked above ACI – No. 7 Hastings (Neb.); No. 8 Missouri Baptist, and No. 9 Azusa Pacific (Calif.) all lost during the week – giving the Yotes the possibility of moving up in the poll.

PREVIOUS RANKINGS: The Coyotes have been ranked in the Top-25 on 12 occasions in program history – the second (No. 24) and third (No. 19) polls of the 1997 season, the preseason (No. 15) and first poll (No. 19) of the 2001 season, the final poll during the 2005 season (No. 24), the 2006 preseason poll (No. 16), and the past six rankings.

YOTES MAINTAIN PERCH ATOP REGIONAL RANKINGS: With a perfect 13-0 start to the Cascade Conference season and a 20-2 overall record, the Yotes remain atop the NAIA Region I weekly Top-10 poll.  ACI is followed by Westminster, Southern Oregon, Great Falls, and Rocky Mountain.  Rounding out the top-ten are Carroll, Oregon Tech, Northwest, Montana Tech, and Concordia.  The regional poll is released each Monday, with the NAIA poll released each Wednesday afternoon.

MENDIOLA ADDS TO HER WINS RECORD: With the Lady Yotes victory over Cedarville (Ohio) on Sept. 23, ACI volleyball coach Liz Mendiola became the all-time winningest volleyball coach in program history.  While at ACI, Mendiola has posted a 121-54 record (.691 win percentage) - six-straight Cascade Conference tournament appearances, three NAIA Region I tournament appearances, along with a trip to the 2005 NAIA Championships.

HOME SWEET HOME: Under Mendiola, the Lady Yotes are 56-12 in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center, an .824 winning percentage.  They are even better in CCC play, holding a 43-8 mark (.843 percent) since the 2001 season.

BEST START EVER: The 20-2 start by the Lady Yotes is the best in program history, dating back to the 1982 season.  In recent years, the 1997 and 2005 teams opened the season with 7-3 marks (best ten-game mark), while the 2005 squad opened with a 12-3 (best 15-game mark) and 16-4 (best 20-game mark) start to a season.  ACI is also a perfect 8-0 on the road this year (not including neutral court matches).

CANYON COUNTY BATTLE: ACI steps away from league play on Tuesday night, hosting Canyon County rival Northwest Nazarene for the first time since 2004.  The Yotes and the Crusaders (10-9) rekindle their rivalry after a one-year hiatus – the 82nd time the two teams have met in volleyball since 1982.  NNU sits in the middle of the pack in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and are coming off wins over Dixie State and Alaska-Anchorage.  They are led offensively by Lindsey Fryer (3.1 k/g, 3.8 d/g) and Cammy Dranginis (2.2 k/g, 1.2 b/g), while Allison James (8.9 a/g) and Jocelyn Judd (3.8 a/g) share time at setter in the Crusaders 6-2 attack.  The Lady Yotes have won the previous four meetings between the teams and hold a 42-39 all-time series edge.

DOMINATING THE LEAGUE NUMBERS: As a team, the Yotes dominate the Cascade Conference statistics, leading the loop in hitting percentage (.250), assists per game (14.77), kills per game (15.75), blocks per game (3.12), and aces per game (2.36).  Individually, Katie Hogue (Sparks, Nev. / Reed HS) leads the league in both hitting percentage (.394) and blocks per game (1.53), while ranking sixth in kills per game (3.47) and eighth in aces per game (0.46).  Erin Cherrington (Granby Colo. / Middle Park HS) leads the league in assists per game (13.60) and is eighth in aces per game (0.46), while Kristin Henning is second in blocks per game (1.24) and is third in hitting percentage (.316).  Anne Parker (Pocatello, Idaho / Century HS) is fifth in blocks per game (1.08) and hitting percentage (.262), with Kathryn Ely (La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS) ranking fifth in kills per game (3.57) and sixth in hitting percentage (.235).  Rounding out the group is Catherine Everist (Portland, Ore. / Chicago State U.), who is No. 3 in digs per game (6.22).

YOTES LEAD NAIA IN ASSISTS AND KILLS, CHERRINGTON LEADS ALL NAIA PLAYERS: As a team, ACI leads the entire NAIA in assists per game and kills per game – while ranking No. 6 in blocks per game and No. 14 in hitting percentage.  Erin Cherrington continues to lead the nation in assists per game, while Katie Hogue ranks No. 7 in the NAIA in blocks per game and is No. 9 in hitting percentage.

RECORD BOOK: As the season progresses, it is inevitable that the ACI record books will be rewritten.  Currently, four players are already among the all-time top-ten.  Katie Hogue ranks No. 3 all-time with 363 blocks, No. 7 with 863 kills, and No. 8 with 102 aces.  Erin Cherrington is second all-time with 4,543 assists (11 from first-place), is third with 172 aces, is No. 7 in games played (408), and is No. 9 with 993 digs (7 from 1,000 in her career).  Also on the list are Tiffany Sower, who is fifth all-time with 127 aces, and Anne Parker, who is sixth in blocks with 254.

WASHINGTONIANS INVADE CALDWELL: The Yotes close out the home portion of the CCC season this weekend, hosting the Washington schools on their lone trip to the Mountain Time Zone.  Northwest opens up the weekend, as the Eagles (11-5, 8-4 CCC) look to solidify their spot in the league standings.  First-year head coach Mary Cotton’s squad has won four of their last five matches and is led by hitters Kara VanZanten (2.9 k/g, 3.3 d/g) and Gina Lubanovici (2.6, 0.8 b/g), along with libero Dayna Casseday (6.6 d/g).  ACI defeated the Eagles 30-26, 30-18, 30-25 three weeks ago and lead the all-time series, 18-5.  Saturday, Evergreen State will look to win for the first-time in Caldwell.  The Geoducks (4-17, 2-10) have struggled of late, losing five matches in a row – dropping all 15 games along the way.  They are led statistically by hitter Emily Peterson (2.2 k/g, 2.9 d/g) and Ann Forman (4.5 d/g).  It is the 12th meeting between the teams, with ACI holding a 9-2 edge, including a 30-9, 30-27, 30-20 win in September.

LAST WEEK’S RECAP: Katie Zillner (Emmett, Idaho / Chicago State U.) had a season-high 14 kills and Catherine Everist added 30 digs as the ACI volleyball team extended their home court win streak to 15 games with a 30-22, 30-25, 30-25 victory over Dixie State at home Tuesday night.  The NCAA Division II Rebels took a 3-1 edge in Game 1, only to see the Yotes run off eight-straight points on Everist's serve - getting two kills each from Zillner and Katie Hogue, to take control of the game.  Game 2 saw Dixie draw even at 16-16 on a Whitnee Webster ace, but the Yotes would get three crucial Hogue kills to keep the visitors at bay.  In the finale, the Rebels would rally from 22-16 down to close within 24-22 on a Emily Jacobsen kill, but the Yotes went to Zillner, who spiked a pair of balls help close out the win.  Kathryn Ely had 13 kills and Hogue 11 for the Yotes, with Erin Cherrington recording 48 assists, six digs, and four block assists.  Friday night, Katie Hogue led the way with 13 kills, as the Yotes registered a 30-25, 30-26, 30-21 victory over Corban College in Salem, Ore.  ACI jumped out to a 6-1 lead in Game 1, only to watch the Warriors rally behind three Chelsea Reeher kills in a 6-1 push to take a 17-15 edge.  The Yotes broke a 24-24 tie with back-to-back Cherrington aces to take the set.  Games 2 and 3 were identical, as the Lady Yotes jumped out to 8-1 advantages in both sets and coasted to the wins.  Senior Michelle Riordan (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS) had 11 digs and freshman Stacie Drumm (Salem, Ore. / South Salem HS) added eight, while Sarah Buhler (Middleton, Idaho / Middleton HS) recorded nine kills and four blocks off the bench.  Saturday night, the Yotes topped Concordia, 30-20, 30-18, 30-17 in Portland, Ore.  The Yotes jumped out to big leads in the first two games for the victory, but had to rally from a 9-2 deficit in Game 3.  However, a 13-1 run got the Purple and Gold on their way to the sweep of the Cavaliers.  Four players recorded double-digit kills - led by Hogue's 12 kills and five blocks.  Anne Parker added 11 kills and four blocks, with Ely and Zillner each spiking ten.

MEN’S SOCCER (6-5-1, 4-2 CCC): Yotes take No. 1 Regional ranking and five-game win streak into weekend homestand

COMING UP: vs. Corban, Friday, 3 p.m.; vs. Warner Pacific, Saturday, 2 p.m.

LAST WEEK: at Northwest (W 2-0); at Evergreen State (W 3-1)

REGIONAL RANKINGS: The seventh NAIA Region I weekly top-five poll of the season saw the Yotes make the jump from No. 2 to the No. 1 spot – the first time in five years that ACI has held the top spot in the regional poll.  Right at the Coyotes heals is Concordia, followed by Westminster, Corban, and Cascade.  Simon Fraser, which began the season in the NAIA Top-25, remaining out of the rankings for a fourth-straight week.

THE LAST TIME: The last time the ACI men’s soccer team was ranked No. 1 in the Region I poll was September of 2002 – when the Coyotes began the season No. 1 in the region and remained their for the first polling period.  The Yotes have been ranked in the NAIA poll on five different occasions – finishing the 2000 season No. 25, finishing the 2001 season at No. 23, earning a No. 16 ranking in the 2002 preseason poll, a No. 15 ranking in the first poll of the 2002 season, with their last time in the poll on Oct. 9, 2002 – at No. 24.

YOTES IN THE DRIVERS SEAT FOR REGIONAL BERTH: With just two weeks remaining in the 2006 Cascade Conference season, ACI destiny in their own hands – holding a one-game lead on Concordia, and facing the Cavs on the final day of the regular-season.  The Yotes could also sew up their first Region I tournament berth by this Saturday – if they can complete a weekend sweep of third-place Corban and fourth-place Warner Pacific.  The top-two teams during regular-season competition earn an automatic berth to the NAIA Region I tournament in November, with the final two spots determined via Longo ratings among the other five CCC teams and independents Simon Fraser and Westminster.  The top independent (currently SFU) will host the tournament, scheduled for November 3-4.

WHITE EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS: The Yotes top scorer, Mitch White (Boise, Idaho / Gonzaga U.) was named Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I Player of the Week after factoring in on four of the five goals ACI scored in their two road wins.  The senior tallied both goals at Northwest, running his total to a CCC-best 11 scores, then assisted on two goals in the victory at Evergreen State.  White leads the league in total shots (73), shots per game (5.21), goals scored (11), total points (26), and game winning goals (3).

REWIND – GENTLE EARNS AWARD: ACI claimed the CCC and NAIA Region I Player of the Week last week as well, as goalkeeper Jay Gentle (Boise, Idaho / Walla Walla CC) earned the honor.  The junior recorded consecutive shutouts over Concordia and Cascade and currently leads the league in goals against average (0.63) and save percentage (.863).  Gentle is a perfect 6-0 in his starts in goal and the Yotes are a perfect 7-0 in the games that he has played in.

YOTES WIN AT NORTHWEST: Mitch White scored a pair of first half goals and the defense made them stick, as the Coyotes shutout Northwest, 2-0, Friday evening at the Starfire Soccer Complex.  The senior tallied his tenth goal of the season midway through the opening period off a feed from Mauricio Both (Cacheoira de Sul, Brazil / Nampa HS) as the Yotes took over sole possession of first-place in the Cascade Conference.  White scored again with one second remaining before halftime - giving the Coyotes the two-goal advantage.  For the third-straight game, the defense made it stick - as keeper Jay Gentle recorded his third-consecutive shutout, turning away ten Eagle shots.

HELP FOR THE FAST TRACK: The Yotes got some help in preparation for their game on the Field Turf surface at Northwest – by practicing last week on the surface.  ACI spent Tuesday and Wednesday in Boise at the Caven-Williams Sports Complex at Boise State, practicing on the fast track – which helped the Yotes for the quick pace of the game on Friday night.

FIRST WIN AT THE GREEN SINCE 2003: The Coyotes completed a road sweep in Washington for the first time in four seasons, as ACI knocked off Evergreen State, 3-1, in Olympia on Saturday.  The win for the Yotes was their fifth in a row and gave ACI a one-game lead over Concordia in the CCC standings with four matches remaining.  Kazuki Murata (Tokyo, Japan / Ichiritu HS) got the Coyotes on the board in the 38th minute, bending a free kick from the corner past Evergreen keeper Nick Tasche.  The Geoducks, who defeated ACI 2-0 in September, got the equalizer two minutes later, as Ryan Mulnick found Jonathan Willoughby in the box for a goal.  ACI took the lead for good in the 42nd minute, as Mitch White crossed a ball into the box for the waiting Antonio Bautista (Homedale, Idaho / Homedale HS), who rifled a shot in the net.  The Yotes would tack on an insurance goal in the 79th minute, as Alex Penrod (Las Vegas, Nev. / Cimarron-Memorial HS) scored on a combination from Brandon Eddy (Sandpoint, Idaho / Sandpoint HS) and White.  Keeper Jay Gentle saw his scoreless streak end at 395 minutes, but remained unbeaten in goal for the Coyotes, now a perfect 6-0 in his starts.  ACI held a 14-11 edge in shots and a commanding 10-4 edge in corner kicks.

BIG HOME WEEKEND: This weekend concludes the 2006 home schedule for the Yotes – with a pair of crucial CCC matches.  ACI opens Friday with Corban, who sits five points behind the Coyotes in the loop standings.  The Warriors (6-5-2, 4-3-1 CCC) are unbeaten in their last three matches, including an impressive 3-1 win at Concordia last Thursday.  Corban is led by Caleb Louvier (9 goals, 2 assists) and Scott Marshall (8 goals, 3 assists), but allows over two goals per game.  The Yotes defeated the Warriors, 3-2, in September and hold an 18-17 all-time series edge.  Saturday, the Coyotes meet Warner Pacific, who defeated ACI, 4-2, three weeks ago.  The Knights (5-6, 4-4) have dropped their last two games – both by one-goal margins and sit in fourth-place in the CCC.  Speed is the key for WP, as both Chris Price (9 goals, 2 assists) and J.B. Cunha (9 goals) have quickness on the outside.  ACI holds the all-time series edge against the Knights, 12-9-2.

SENIOR DAY: Saturday’s game vs. Warner Pacific marks the final home game for six ACI seniors.  Playing in their final Symms Field game in the Purple and Gold will by keeper Rob Erichson (Boise, Idaho / Walla Walla CC), defenders Scott Fuller (Boise, Idaho / Cal State-Fullerton) and Sam Reed (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS), midfielder Tyler Seaman (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS), and forwards Mitch White and Dustin Wanders (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS).  There is a total of 23 years of combined experience in a Coyote uniform among the 2006 senior class.

GAME TIME CHANGE: The Yotes game at Concordia on October 28 has been moved from its original 1 p.m. kickoff to a 2 p.m. starting time.  The change was necessitated by the possibility of the Concordia women’s soccer team hosting the CCC tournament title game.

MORE INFORMATION: Updated information and statistics on the 2006 men’s soccer team can be found on Albertson men’s soccer official website at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/menssoccer.htm.  Up-to-date Cascade Conference standings can be found online at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/msoccer/stats/standings.htm.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Lady Yotes clinch playoff spot, need win or tie vs. Eastern to secure home date

COMING UP: at Eastern Oregon, Wednesday, 3 p.m. (PDT); Cascade Conference Tournament Quarterfinal, Saturday (either Oregon Tech, Corban, or Evergreen State) – Time and Place to be determined.

LAST WEEK: vs. No. 5 Concordia (L 5-0); vs. Cascade (T 0-0 2OT)

NAIA REGION I WEEKLY POLL: With a 6-8-2 overall record, the Lady Yotes were just outside the NAIA Region I weekly top-five poll for the fourth consecutive week.  Leading the way was Concordia, followed by Carroll, and Rocky Mountainwhich  will meet this Saturday.  Simon Fraser continues to sit in the No. 4 spot, followed by Eastern Oregon.  In the national poll, Concordia is ranked fifth, Carroll 12th, and SFU No. 16.  The NAIA releases the regional poll every Monday, with the national poll released on Wednesday afternoon.

THE PLAYOFFS WELCOME THE LADY YOTES: ACI clinched a berth in the Cascade Conference postseason tournament with a tie over Cascade on Saturday afternoon.  It marks the first trip for the Lady Yotes to the playoffs since 2002 and just the fourth postseason berth in school history.  The 1991 and 1993 teams advanced to the semifinals of the District 2 tournament, while the 2002 team lost in the semifinals of the CCC tournament.  The Lady Yotes have never hosted, nor have ever won a postseason contest in women’s soccer.

NEW PLAYOFF SCENARIO: With the Cascade Conference eliminating divisions and double round-robin play, a new playoff format will also debut this season.  The top-six teams during the nine-game conference schedule will qualify for the CCC Tournament – with the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds earning quarterfinal byes.  The regular-season champion, along with the CCC Tournament champion will receive automatic bids to the NAIA Region I Tournament.

PLAYOFF LOG-JAM: The six teams have been determined for the CCC tourney, which begins with quarterfinal action on Saturday afternoon.  Concordia has clinched the regular-season title, No. 1 seed in the tournament, and a berth to the Region I tournament.  Eastern Oregon has secured the No. 2 seed and an opening-round bye.  Then comes the log-jam as the Lady Yotes hold a slim two-point lead in the standings over Oregon Tech, Corban, and Evergreen State.  ACI can claim the No. 3 seed in the tournament and a quarterfinal playoff game at home with a win or a tie (ACI holds all tie-breakers with the three other teams, as the Yotes went 3-0 vs. them), or losses by two of the other teams.  If the Lady Yotes lose, they would fall to the No. 6 seed – and move up one seed per loss by OIT, Corban, or E-State.

IF THE YOTES HOST: If ACI hosts a quarterfinal playoff game on Saturday, it would be an 11 a.m. kickoff at Symms Field – prior to the men’s soccer game with Warner Pacific.

TOUGH LOSS TO CONCORDIA: Despite an outstanding defensive effort for the first 75-minutes by the Lady Yotes, Jennifer Hughes tallied two goals and an assist as the No. 5 ranked Concordia University women's soccer team defeated ACI, 5-0, Friday afternoon at sunny Symms Field.  The Cavaliers opened the scoring at the three minute mark of the opening half, as Jennifer Hart rocketed a ball off the crossbar, which deflected to Hughes and Shea Miller, with Miller tapping the ball in for the 1-0 lead.  ACI would play outstanding defense the rest of the half, nearly tying the score late in the period off a Mandy Greif (Payette, Idaho / Payette HS) corner - as an Emily Dickerson (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) header to the far post was snagged by Lela Mansfield, who notched her eighth shutout in nine outings.  CU would score four goals in the second half to secure the win.

YOTES DRAW WITH CASCADE: The Lady Yotes team secured their first postseason berth since 2002 Saturday, playing to a 0-0 draw against Cascade College at Symms Field.  Despite a 28-5 shot advantage, ACI could not find the back of the net against the scrappy T-Birds.  The Yotes best chance came with two minutes to go in regulation, as an Allie Dufault (Irvine, Calif. / University HS) header off a corner kick clanked off the near post.  Cascade had a chance to win the game in the waning seconds of the second overtime period, as Desirae Pino went 1-on-1 with ACI keeper Amy Rhoades (Eagle, Idaho / Dixie State Coll.), with Rhoades blocking the would-be game winner, preserving the draw.

UNCHARTED WATERS: The draw with Cascade also guaranteed the Lady Yotes a winning record in Cascade Conference play for the first time in school history.  ACI had .500 marks in league play in 2002, 2003, and 2005 – but can finish no worse than 4-3-2 in league play this season.  The Lady Yotes also tied the 1993 squad for most shutouts in a season – recording their sixth of the year against Cascade.

FIGHTING OFF THE INJURIES: The injuries have continued to mount up for the Lady Yotes as the season has wore on.  Two defenders – Brittney Hulin (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) and Martine Troy (Salt Lake City, Utah / Judge Memorial HS) have been lost for the season due to knee injuries, while the squad played without the services of Katie Ball (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) last weekend, due to a concussion.  Two others – keeper Sadie Hughes (Courtenay, B.C. / GP Vanier SS) and forward Leah Roach (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) missed Saturday’s game – Hughes with a foot injury and Roach with an ankle sprain.  ACI hopes to have Ball, Hughes, and Roach back on Wednesday at Eastern Oregon.

REMATCH WITH THE MOUNTIES: Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Yotes close out the regular-season with a match at rival Eastern Oregon in La Grande.  The Mountaineers (10-5, 6-2) are in the midst of their best season in program history and had a three-game win streak snapped in a 1-0 overtime loss to Concordia.  Eastern is led by Kristen Rice (5 goals, 2 assists) and Tennly Paul-Bowden (4 goals, 2 assists), along with a tenacious defense that has allowed just 15 goals all season.  ACI dropped a 2-0 decision to the Mounties in August, but holds a 12-5-1 all-time series edge.
