ATHLETIC NEWS:

CAA DINNER COMING UP: The next Coyote Athletic Association dinner is scheduled for next Wednesday night, Dec. 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room of the Simplot Dining Hall on the ACI campus.  All Coyote fans and supporters are encouraged to attend the all-you-can-eat dinner, which costs $8.00.  To RSVP, contact Dave Hahn at 459-5835.

SWIMMING OFF TO NORTHWEST INVITE: The Coyote swimmers are set for this weekend’s Northwest Invitational, hosted by Pacific Lutheran, in Tacoma, Wash.  ACI will be the only NAIA at the meet, joining a bevy of NCAA Division III competition at the two-day, three session event.

TRIO OF COYOTES NAMED ALL-AMERICANS: A trio of ACI men’s soccer players were named honorable mention NAIA All-Americans following the conclusion of the NAIA Men’s Soccer Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.  Forward Mitch White, defender Scott Fuller, and goalkeeper Jay Gentle earned the honor from the NAIA-Soccer Coaches Association.

VOLLEYBALL (33-2): Lady Yotes off to Missouri for NAIA Championships

COMING UP: at NAIA Volleyball National Championships, Columbia, Mo., Wednesday-Saturday – vs. No. 25 Cedarville (Ohio), Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. (CST); vs. No. 17 Lee (Tenn.), Wednesday, 6 p.m. (CST); vs.  No. 4 Cal Baptist, Thursday, 8:15 p.m. (CST)

ABOUT THE NAIA CHAMPIONSHIPS: The event, held this year in Columbia, Mo. (on the campus of Columbia College), is the 27th-consecutive year that the NAIA has sponsored a national championship in women’s volleyball.  A total of 20 teams are in the tournament – 13 teams who won their respective regional tournament, five at-large teams (based on strength of conference schedule), one wild-card team (based on overall record, regional performance), and a berth to the host school.  The teams are split into five Pools of four teams (for round-robin competition), with the winner of each Pool receiving a spot in the national quarterfinals (along with the second-place team in Pool E – the most difficult Pool).  The second-place teams in Pools A-D and B-C will meet in a playoff to determine the other two teams into the quarterfinal bracket.  The remainder of the tournament is single-elimination.

SEEDED SEVENTH, POOL D: Unlike in the past, the Lady Yotes have been seeded into the tournament, earning the No. 7 seed by the NAIA Volleyball Coaches Association.  ACI was put into Pool D – joined by No. 4 seeded Cal Baptist, and unseeded Lee (Tenn.) and Cedarville (Ohio).

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: All three opponents that the Yotes will face in Pool Play are former opponents in ACI’s past – with the Coyotes holding an unblemished record against the trio.  In Wednesday’s opener, the Yotes meet Cedarville of Cedarville, Ohio.  The Yellowjackets (45-7), ranked No. 25 in the final NAIA poll, have won three consecutive Region IX-X championships, along with the last two NCCAA National Championships.  The Cedarville attack is led by middle blockers Sarah Zeltman (4.6 k/g, 1.1 b/g) and Julia Bradley (3.8 k/g, 1.1 b/g).  ACI met the Yellowjackets at the Best of the Best Tournament in September, defeating Cedarville in three games.  Wednesday’s afternoon tilt is against Lee of Cleveland, Tenn.  The Flames (31-7), ranked No. 17 in the final NAIA poll, are the Region XIII champions for the third-straight year and are led by All-Americans Bruna Langner (3.8 k/g, 1.8 b/g) and Ligia Zobolli (4.0 k/g, 3.2 d/g).  ACI met Lee last season at the NAIA Championships and defated the Flames in three games.  The Coyotes round out pool play against Cal Baptist of Riverside, Calif. – the tw-time defending NAIA champions.  The Lancers (28-7), ranked No. 4 in the final NAIA poll, finished third in the powerful Region II, thanks to the play of returning NAIA Player of the Year, Verania Willis (4.5 k/g, 2.0 d/g) and Shi Fei (3.7 k/g, 2.3 d/g).  ACI has met CBU once before, defeating the Lancers in five games during the Point Loma Tournament in 2001.

THE FOREIGN FACTOR: The Lady Yotes have something going for them that none of the other nine seeded teams in the tournament have – a roster completely made up of players from the United States.  Each of the other seeded teams in the tournament has at least one foreign player on their roster – with top-seeded National American having eight foreign players on their squad and host Columbia having six foreign players on their roster.  Of the 20 teams in the tournament, 12 have foreign-born players on their rosters.

HISTORY AT NATIONALS: 2006 marks the third time the Lady Yotes have advanced to the NAIA Championships – making other trips in 2000 and 2005.  The 2000 tournament was held in Palm Beach, Fla., with ACI going 1-3 in their Pool Play matches (defeating Broomfield (N.J.), but losing to Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.), St. Mary’s (Neb.), and Madonna (Mich.).  Last year’s tournament was held in San Diego, Calif., with the Yotes going 2-2 in the Pool Play matches (defeating Georgetown (Ky.) and Lee (Tenn.), while losing to Houston Baptist (Texas) and Fresno Pacific (Calif.).  ACI has an overall record of 3-5 at the NAIA Championships.

STREAKS GALORE FOR THE YOTES: Impressive numbers dot the landscape of the 2006 volleyball season for ACI, as the Lady Yotes have multiple streaks still alive.  ACI has won a school-record 20 matches in a row, have won a school-record 25-consecutive matches at home, dating back to last season, and has won 45-consecutive matches against teams not ranked in the national poll (or others’ receiving votes).

NATIONAL RANKING: The Yotes were ranked No. 8 in the final NAIA volleyball poll of the regular-season, released last week by the national office in Olathe, Kan.. – equaling the highest ranking in program history. Six others – No. 1 National American (S.D.), No. 5 Columbia (Mo.), No. 17 Lee (Tenn.), No. 25 Cedarville (Ohio), Lindenwood (Mo.) and Southern Oregon, are among the ACI opponents (or opponents to be) this season in the Top-25 and others receiving votes.

PREVIOUS RANKINGS: The Coyotes have been ranked in the Top-25 on 17 occasions in program history – the second (No. 24) and third (No. 19) polls of the 1997 season, the preseason (No. 15) and first poll (No. 19) of the 2001 season, the final poll during the 2005 season (No. 24), the 2006 preseason poll (No. 16), and all 11  rankings this year.

MENDIOLA ADDS TO HER WINS RECORD: With the Lady Yotes victory over Cedarville (Ohio) on Sept. 23, ACI volleyball coach Liz Mendiola became the all-time winningest volleyball coach in program history.  While at ACI, Mendiola has posted a 132-54 record (.710 win percentage) - six-straight Cascade Conference tournament appearances, three NAIA Region I tournament appearances, the 2005 and 2006 CCC and NAIA Region I tourney titles, the 2006 CCC regular-season title, along with a trips to the 2005 and 2006 NAIA Championships.

HOME SWEET HOME: Under Mendiola, the Lady Yotes are 66-12 in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center, an .846 winning percentage.  They are even better in CCC play, holding a 45-8 mark (.849 percent) since the 2001 season.

BEST SEASON EVER: The 33-2 mark by the Lady Yotes has shattered all season records.  In recent years, the 1997 and 2005 teams opened the season with 7-3 marks (best ten-game mark), while the 2005 squad opened with a 12-3 (best 15-game mark), 16-4 (best 20-game mark), 20-5 (best 25-game mark), and 25-5 (best 30-game mark) start to a season.  ACI finished the year a perfect 18-0 at home (second time the Yotes have gone unbeaten at home) and a perfect 11-0 on the road this year (not including neutral court matches).  The win total has eclipsed the former record for wins in a season – as the 1981 team, led by ACI Hall of Famer Lerna Thames and coached by Don Braunecker, went 30-11.

CAREER RECORD BOOK: It has already happened, but it is inevitable that the ACI record books will continue to be rewritten.  Currently, five players are already among the all-time top-ten.  Katie Hogue (Sparks, Nev. / Reed HS) ranks No. 3 all-time with 391 blocks (five from second-place), No. 6 with 127 aces, and No. 7 with 981 kills (needing 19 kills to become the sixth player to reach the 1,000 kill plateau).  Erin Cherrington (Granby, Colo. / Middle Park HS) holds the all-time record with 5,091 assists, is third with 189 aces, is No. 4 in games played (446), and is No. 5 with 1,083 digs.  Also on the list are Tiffany Sower (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS),  who is fifth all-time with 141 aces, Anne Parker (Pocatello, Idaho / Century HS), who is fifth in blocks with 289 and tenth in kills with 696, and Kathryn Ely (La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS), who is No. 9 in kills with 784.

SINGLE SEASON RECORDS: Multiple Yotes have already jumped into the single-season record book as well.  Libero Catherine Everist (Portland, Ore. / Chicago State U.) tops the list, having recorded the most digs (711) in a season, eclipsing the mark of 703, set by Charity Gaston last season.  She also is averaging 6.35 digs per game, nearly a half-dig more than the school record, heading into the national championships.  Also on the list is Erin Cherrington, who is on pace to break her own school record for assists per game (13.89), while recording the third-most assists (1,500) in a single-season.  Joining them is Katie Hogue who currently ranks No. 5 on the blocks (135) and No. 6 on the ace (57) list, and Kristin Henning (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS), who is eighth in blocks (118).  Hogue, Henning, and Anne Parker all are currently among the top-ten in a season in hitting percentage.

HONOR ROLL: The accolades of the 2006 Coyote volleyball team are staggering, as ACI has dominated awards in Northwest NAIA volleyball – the following is the Lady Yote honors:

Erin Cherrington – seven-time CCC Setter of the Week, seven-time NAIA Region I Setter of the Week, NAIA National Setter of the Week (Sept. 26), Best of the Best All-Tournament Team, All-CCC, CCC Player of the Year, All-NAIA Region I, NAIA Region I Player of the Year

COYOTES STREAK ENDS AT 5-0: Before the loss to Westminster on Saturday night, ACI recorded their best start in five seasons, when Mark Owen led his 2001-02 squad to a 5-0 start.  This year’s team joins the 1998-99 and 2001-02 squads going 5-0.  Only four other squads posted better starts to a season, as the 1991-92 team went 6-0 to start the season, with the 1958-59 and 1984-85 team – which Owen was a member of as a player, began 7-0.   The best start by a Coyote team was the 1995-96 NAIA Division II national championship squad that began the year, 8-0.

EASTERN BRINGING I-84 CUP TO CALDWELL: ACI and Eastern Oregon have played every season since 1945 (the longest continuous rivalry for the Coyotes) – with the ‘Yotes holding a 100-55 in the series (ACI and Northwest Nazarene had played every season from 1946 to 2001, before a two-year hiatus).  The Yotes had won eight-consecutive games against EOU in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center, before last season’s 78-63 win by the Mountaineers in Caldwell.  With the emerging popularity of the men’s game among the respective student bodies, an “I-84 Cup” will go to the winner of each game – the trophy residing at the winning school until the next meeting.  “Albertson has become one of our greatest rivals,” said EOU athletic director Rob Cashell.  “The I-84 Cup represents added incentive to prepare for the Yotes and earn a victory. It also gives our fans and boosters an added experience."  The I-84 Cup had resided in Caldwell from Jan. 7, 2005 until Feb. 17, 2006 – and has been in La Grande since.

THE MOUNTIES THE RANKED TEAM THIS TIME: Eastern (7-1) comes into Friday’s game ranked No. 23 in the preseason NAIA Division II poll and are off to their best start since 1981.  The Mountaineers ran off a pair of wins against both Montana-Western and Montana Tech, topped Multnomah Bible and Walla Walla, then defeated Westminster, 85-73, at the Golden Rule Shoot-Out, before losing a tough 84-81 decision to Willamette.  EOU also defeated Northwest Nazarene, 68-61, in an exhibition game last Friday night in Nampa.  The Mounties are led by brothers Paul Carollo (13.6 ppg, 9.6 rpg) and Mark Carollo (16.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg), along with sophomore Tanner McIntosh (14.1 ppg, 4.9 rpg).  Eastern has dominated opponents on the glass, recording nearly 11 more rebounds per game than their opponents, but turn the ball over nearly 17 times per game.

BIG WIN OVER CARROLL: Two years ago, Carroll College lost in the NAIA Division I semifinals and a year ago, they lost in the national quarterfinals.  Friday night, they lost to the Coyotes, 89-77, in Salt Lake City.  Ike Stafford (Auburn, Wash. / Salt Lake CC) scored a game-high 25 points in the win, including four-straight second half three-pointers that helped ACI build a 22-point lead.  The Saints used a 24-7 run to

close within 74-69 with five minutes left, however, the Yotes hit 13-straight free throws at one point late in the game to notch the victory.  Craig McGee (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) came up huge in the second half, scoring 13 points and grabbing a season-high nine rebounds, with Brandon Nielsen (Twin Falls, Idaho / Big Bend CC) coming off the bench to score 13.  Josh Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) recorded 12 points, seven assists, and six steals in the victory.

MORE ON THE WIN: ACI shot 50-percent or better from the field for the third time this season in the victory, and connected on 15 three-pointers.  It was the fourth time in five games that the Yotes had made ten-or-more three-pointers in a game this season.  The Coyotes also held a slim 31-30 lead on the glass, the first time this season that ACI had outrebounded their opponent.

STREAK ENDS VS. WESTMINSTER: Jordan Jacobs was one of four Westminster College players in double-figures, as the Griffins handed ACI their first loss of 2006, topping the Yotes, 77-59, in the title game of the Homestead Studio Suites Thanksgiving Classic in Salt Lake City.  The Coyotes held a brief 15-13 first half lead, but Westminster used a 15-3 push to build a 38-31 halftime edge, and ACI would not get closer than five points the rest of the way.  Danny Reeder had 12 points and Nate Sanchez added 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win, avenging a 83-80 loss to the Yotes in the Golden Rule Shoot-Out.  Brandon Nielsen led ACI with 15 points and Brian Champ (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) chipped in with ten in the loss.

WHAT HAPPENED?: Poor shooting plagued the Yotes on Saturday night, as ACI shot a season-low 32-percent from the floor.  Hampering that was a tough night from leading scorer Ike Stafford, who connected on 1-of-9 shots from the floor – finishing 20-points below his season average.  Defensively, the Coyotes struggled at times, allowing Westminster to hold a 46-22 edge on the glass, while Coyotes recorded a season-low ten steals.

HANGING ONTO THE BALL: After ACI set a school record by committing 33 turnovers in a wild 129-120 win over Montana-Western, the Coyotes have done an admirable job in ball-control.  In the five games since the opener, the Yotes have averaged just 11 turnovers a game, while opponents have been forced into 26 turnovers a game – a plus-15 margin.

CONFERENCE SCHEDULE OPENS: Some intriguing match-ups dot the landscape this weekend, as all ten Cascade Conference teams open up the 18-game double round-robin schedule.  Although many point to the ACI-Eastern game as the “Game of the Week” – others are just as interesting.  Concordia will take their 5-1 preseason mark to meet Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech, while Northwest heads to Portland to meet defending CCC champ, Warner Pacific – who is a perfect 5-0.  CCC play will take a two-week hiatus, as games will resume on Dec. 19-20, along with Dec. 29-30.

NATIONAL POLL: Three Cascade Conference teams were ranked in the NAIA Division II preseason poll – No. 4 Oregon Tech, No. 13 Northwest, and No. 23 Eastern Oregon.  The Coyotes received 14 votes in the poll, showing up in the Others Receiving Votes category.  The first regular-season poll will be released next Wednesday.

CONFERENCE NUMBERS: As a team, the Yotes lead the Cascade Conference in three categories – steals per game (16.5), turnover margin (+15.8), and three pointers made per game (12.0).  Individually, Ike Stafford leads the loop in three-pointers made (4.7) and is third in scoring average (21.3).  Also in the Top-5 are Josh Owen, who leads the league in steals per game (3.2), followed closely by Brian Champ (2.3) at No. 2, and Donnel Garner (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral HS) (2.2) at No. 4.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (2-4): Coyotes look to end long streak vs. Eastern Oregon in Cascade Conference opener

COMING UP: vs. Eastern Oregon, Friday, 5:30 p.m.

LAST WEEK: hosted Caldwell Best Western Inn and Suites Lady Yote Classic – vs. Westminster (L 69-53), vs. Willamette (W 70-54)

INTERNET BROADCAST: Friday’s game with Eastern Oregon will be carried live on the Internet via the ACI athletic website.  Student Jeremy Feucht will handle the play-by-play duties, beginning at 5:25 p.m.  In addition, all women’s basketball CCC road games will be broadcast live in the Treasure Valley on 1490 KCID-AM, with Mike Safford calling the play-by-play.

I-84 CUP BATTLE ON FRIDAY: Friday night, the Lady Yotes open up the 2006-07 Cascade Conference schedule with the first of two meetings against their I-84 Cup rival, Eastern Oregon.  The game will mark the first time that the two women’s basketball teams will be playing for a traveling trophy – similar to the I-84 Cup that the two institutions men’s teams have been vying for over the past three years.   ACI will be looking to end a nine-game losing streak against the Mountaineers – a streak that is at 11 when it includes only regular-season games.

ABOUT THE MOUNTAINEERS: Eastern took home the title of the Lady Yote Classic last weekend, winning both games against Willamette and Westminster.  The Mounties (4-1) are led by All-CCC guard Christie Weaver (15.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and post Tiffanie Ulmer (11.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg) – two of 13 players on the squad who see nine or more minutes of action per game.  EOU’s only loss this season was a 75-51 decision at Lewis-Clark State, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA Division I.  It is the 26th meeting between the schools, with ACI holding a 13-12 edge.

VANDER ESCH RECORDS RARITY: Saturday night was a special evening for transfer Christon Vander Esch (Grangeville, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC), as the sophomore not only set the school record for steals in a game, but became the first Yote to record a triple-double in program history.  Vander Esch had a season-high 21 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and set the mark with 11 steals in the win over Willamette.  The steals recorded shattered the former mark of eight, which was equaled on five different occasions – the last in 2005.  It also broke the Cascade Conference single-game steals mark, topping the former record of ten, set  twice – the last in 2002.  She currently leads the CCC in steals per game, and ranks fourth in the NAIA in the category – while leading the league in offensive rebounds per game.

MORE ON THE TRIPLE-DOUBLE: No ACI player had ever accomplished the feat, prior to Saturday, as only 12 times a Coyote had recorded double-figure assists, with only three of those times recording a double-double.  The closest a Lady Yote had come to a triple-double was Jeannie Thompson against Northwest on Feb. 17, 2001 – when she scored eight points, had nine rebounds, nine assists, and ten turnovers.  In fact, in the last three seasons, only two Cascade Conference players had recorded a triple-double.

YOTES SWAMP WILLAMETTE: The Yotes took the consolation game of the Lady Yote Classic on Saturday night by forcing 41 Willamette turnovers in a 70-54 win.  ACI held the Bearcats without a field goal over the final 15 minutes of the game, ending the contest on a 14-2 run to notice the win.

ACI EXTENDS RECORD VS. NORTHWEST CONFERENCE: Although ACI was a charter member of the Northwest Conference and participated as a league member from 1926-1977, women’s athletics were not sanctioned league sports during that time.  In fact, the Lady Yotes have faced seven of the nine members of the league, recording a combined record of 15-3 against NWC teams (George Fox, Lewis & Clark, Linfield, Pacific Lutheran, Willamette, Whitworth, Whitman) since women’s hoop began in 1995, while they have not met Puget Sound or Pacific.  On the flip side, the ACI men’s basketball team has played 670 games against NWC competition, dating back to the 1932-33 season.

HILL RECORDS DOUBLE-DOUBLE: In the victory, transfer Denise Hill (Eugene, Ore. / Boise State U.) recorded her first double-double of her Coyote career.  The junior scored 15 points and had a season-high 13 rebounds.  Hill has scored in double-figures in five of the Lady Yotes six games – joining Whitney Clark (Jerome, Idaho / Northwest Nazarene U.) in that category.

AMES HAS CAREER NIGHT: Guard Savannah Ames (Skagway, Alaska / Skagway HS) scored a career-high 16 points in the Willamette win.  The sophomore, who scored a season-best six points in a game last year, also recorded four rebounds and three steals in the victory.

TOUGH LOSS TO WESTMINSTER: Elisa Leader canned five three-pointers, part of her 22 point night, as Westminster College completed a season sweep of Albertson College, topping the Coyotes, 69-53, on Friday night.  Leader hit a pair of early treys, as the Griffins jumped out to an early 11-2 lead.  However, ACI would rally, with a Jori Grady (Roseburg, Ore. / Umpqua CC) triple tying the score at 13-13.  The Coyotes would lead only once on the evening, as a Christon Vander Esch lay-up gave the hosts a brief 36-34 lead early in the second half.  However, Westminster would hold ACI to just one field goal over a seven minute stretch, building a ten-point cushion that they would not squander.  Whitney Clark led the Lady Yotes with 17 points, with Grady adding 16 points.  Denise Hill had seven points and led all players with 11 rebounds.

AMONG THE LEAGUE LEADERS: As a team, the Lady Yotes lead the CCC in steals per game (19.8), turnover margin (+7.2), and turnovers forced per game (31.8).  ACI ranks No. 2 in the NAIA in the steals per game category and No. 5 in the NAIA in the turnover margin column.

SUCCESS IN THE ACTIVITIES CENTER: Playing at home has always been a big key for the Lady Yotes, as ACI has posted a 92-40 all-time record in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.

CONFERENCE PLAY SET TO OPEN UP THIS WEEKEND: All ten teams in the Cascade Conference open up play this weekend, one of three sets of nights teams will play before the new year.  Key match-ups include Corban at Oregon Tech, Northwest at Warner Pacific, and Eastern Oregon at ACI.
