MEN’S BASKETBALL: Yotes take win streak in Tuesday’s game at EOU, host Northwest and Evergreen this weekend

COMING UP: at No. 6 Eastern Oregon, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. (PST); vs. Northwest, Friday, 7:30 p.m.; vs. Evergreen State, Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

LAST WEEK: at Northwest Christian (W 73-63)

RADIO/INTERNET: All 30 regular-season games will be broadcast live in the Treasure Valley on 1490 KCID-AM, the Home of the Coyotes.  Sports information director Mike Safford returns for his seventh-year as Voice of the Coyotes, with the pregame show begining 20-minutes prior to tip-off each night.  This week, all three games will also be available live on the Internet via The C of I athletic website at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/caa/radio.htm.

LIVE STATS: Live statistics will be available for The C of I-Eastern Oregon game, via the EOU athletic website at http://snake.eou.edu/athletics/livestats/mbx/xlive.htm.

OWEN MOVES INTO ELITE COMPANY WITH ANOTHER 30-POINTER: The basket must seem the size of a swimming pool for Josh Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS), who scored 33 points in Saturday’s win at Northwest Christian.  It marked the third-consecutive game by the senior of 30-points or more, becoming just the fourth player in C of I history, and first in 41 years to record the feat.  C of I Hall of Famer, Taft Jackson, scored 30-plus points in three straight games on six occasions during his career – including a string of seven-straight games during the 1964-65 season, where he scored 905 points.  NBA Hall of Famer, Elgin Baylor, had a string of six-straight 30 or more point games during the 1954-55 season, helping the Yotes to the District title game.  Rounding out the “who’s who” list is NAIA Hall of Famer, R.C. Owens, who had three-straight 30-point games during the 1953-54 season.

HUGE NUMBERS DURING THE STREAK: During the three-game run by Owen, he is averaging 32.6 points per game, while connecting on 57-percent of his field goal attempts (33-of-58) and 56-percent of his three-pointers (20-of-36).  Owen, who struggled mightily during the first two weeks of the season, has hit 44-percent of his triples since the second weekend of November, and is averaging 20.3 points per game over the last 11 games.

OWEN SIXTH ON SCORING LIST: With the outburst at NCC, Owen moved into sixth-place on The C of I all-time scoring list with 1,306 points, with a legitimate shot at moving into the No. 4 slot on the list by the end of the season.  Ahead of him sit No. 5 Jared Klassen with 1,388, and No. 4 Chuck Blackhurst with 1,391.  The top-three spots look safe – Taft Jackson with 2,336 points, R.C. Owens with 2,155 points, and Kade Wilson with1,637 points.

GUNNING FOR THREE-STRAIGHT WINS: With consecutive road wins over Cascade and Northwest Christian, the Yotes will look for their first three-game win streak since February of last season.

SIXTH-RANKED MOUNTIES SET FOR YOTES: The C of I heads into the lion’s den on Tuesday night, traveling to Quinn Coliseum to meet first-place Eastern Oregon in La Grande.  The Mountaineers (12-1, 5-0 CCC) are the lone unbeaten team in the Cascade Conference, climbing to No. 6 in the final NAIA Division II national poll of 2007.  Ryan Looney’s bunch has won seven games in a row since a loss to Westminster – scoring 70-or-more points in all 13 contests, averaging eight more rebounds per game than their opponents, with nine of their 12 wins by double-digits.  Eastern has a potent starting line-up, as four players average in double figures – Mark Carollo (18.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg), Neil Fryer (12.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg), Kyle Janke (12.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 64 FG%), and Jeremy Templeton (11.0 ppg, 5.1 apg).  It marks the 159th meeting between the teams, dating back to 1934, with the Yotes holding a 101-57 series edge.

I-84 CUP ON THE LINE: The two teams will play once again for more than just a victory, as the victor Tuesday will claim the I-84 Cup – which signifies the rivalry between the two most eastern outposts in the CCC.  EOU and The C of I have met on the hardwood every season since 1945, but began the I-84 Cup tradition in 2004.  Since then, the Coyotes have won four of the six games – but EOU has held the Cup since a 78-75 win over the Yotes in La Grande last February.

NATIONAL SEMIFINALIST MAKES APPEARANCE IN C-TOWN: After spending over a month on the road, the Coyotes return home on Friday night, with surging Northwest heading to Caldwell.  The Eagles (9-6, 5-1) are coming off a pair of home wins over Warner Pacific and Cascade – moving a half-game out of first-place in the loop standings.  John Van Dyke’s team is coming off their best season in program history – winning three games at the 2007 NAIA Division II Tournament, before losing to Mayville State in the national semifinals.  The 2007-08 looks completely different, as only one player returns (Chase Van Cleave) from last season – but the newcomers, Eddie Coulson (16.3 ppg, 3.9 rpg), Greg George (13.2 ppg, 6.9 rpg), and Pat Mattson (10.9 ppg, 6.1 rpg) have led the way.  The Yotes will look to end a three-game losing streak to the Eagles, but still hold a 14-9 all-time series edge.

IMPROVED GREENERS SET FOR IDAHO CLASH: The most improved team in the league comes to town Saturday, as Evergreen State looks to end a two-game losing streak to the Yotes.  The Geoducks (9-3, 4-2) are already just one win away from equaling their win total from last year – as first-year head coach (and former Boise State assistant) Jeff Drinkwine works the rebuilding magic.  Former All-CCC guard Nate Menafee (23.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg) has thrived in Olympia after transferring from Warner Pacific, while three others average in double figures – Nick Moore (11.5 ppg, 6.6 rpg), Michael Ward (11.1 ppg, 2.4 rpg), and Marcus Whittaker (10.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg).  The two teams have met 17 times, with the Yotes holding a 13-4 series edge.

CAREER RECORD BOOK: The Coyote career record book continues to shuffle each week, as a pair of Yotes continue their assault.  Josh Owen ranks in the Top-11 in eleven categories – including No. 2 in career three-pointers made (228) and attempted (585).  He is third in field goal attempts (997), sixth in points scored (1,306), seventh in steals (138), eighth in assists (255), ninth in field goals made (423), 11th in free throws made (232), games played (103), and free throw attempts (270).  After starting the season as the best foul shooter in program history, Owen has fallen off the pace with his 80-percent average this season – dropping to No. 4 on the free throw percentage list (.859).  Also on the list is junior Bryan Champ (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS), who is No. 9 in career steals (127)

CASCADE CONFERENCE TOP-SIX:  The first CCC Top-6 Coaches Poll of 2008 was released on Monday – with teams jockeying for position.  Eastern Oregon remained in the No. 1 spot, with Oregon Tech moving into the No. 2 slot.  Northwest climbed to No. 3, with Evergreen State remaining at No. 4.  Warner Pacific fell from No. 2 to No. 5 by losing four of their last five games, with the Coyotes returning to the poll at No. 6.  In the final NAIA Top-25 poll of 2007, Eastern Oregon is ranked No. 6, Warner Pacific was ranked No. 13, and Oregon Tech is No. 17 – with Evergreen State receiving votes.  The C of I has a streak of 15 consecutive years of Top-25 rankings on the line in 2007-08.  The next NAIA poll will released on Wednesday, Jan. 9 – with the CCC poll released each Monday and the national poll each Wednesday the rest of the season.

CASCADE CONFERENCE STATS: The Coyotes as a team continue to lead the CCC in steals per game (9.7), while ranking second in the league and ninth in the NAIA in turnover margin (+4.8).  The squad has improved in nearly every other league statistic – now No. 4 in three-pointers made per game (8.1) and scoring defense (73.0), No. 6 in field goal percentage (.446) and scoring margin (-1.7), No. 7 in free throw percentage (.692), No. 8 in three-point percentage (.325), assists per game (12.5), and scoring average (71.3), is No. 9 in blocks per game (1.9), and No. 11 in rebound margin (-7.7).  Individually, Bryan Champ leads the league and is No. 3 in the NAIA in steals per game (2.9), with Josh Owen leading the league in minutes played per game (34.7) and three-pointers made per game (2.9), while ranking No. 10 in scoring average (17.1).

CASCADE CONFERENCE LEADERS: Scoring Average – Nate Menafee (ESC) 23.6, Scott O’Gallagher (WP) 22.2, Ryan Fiegi (OIT) 20.4, Wade Douglas (CRB) 19.5, Christian Cavanaugh (OIT) 18.7; Rebound Average – Cavanaugh 8.2, Josh Jarrett (NCC) 8.1, Joshua Wetzler (OIT) 8.1, Ryan Barker (CAS) 8.1, Jalonta Martin (WP) 7.8; Field Goal Percentage – Wetzler .716, Kyle Janke (EOU) .637, Cavanaugh .613, Douglas .602, Matt Ochs (CU) .596; Assist Average – Fiegi 6.4, Jesse Alvarez (CU) 5.3, Jeremy Templeton (EOU) 5.1, Kao Saelee (CAS) 4.3, Luke Hammond (NU) 4.1.

COYOTES TAKE OUT NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN: Josh Owen had his third-consecutive game of 30-or-more points, as The College of Idaho earned a key road win Saturday at Northwest Christian, defeating the host Beacons, 73-63, at the Morse Event Center in Eugene, Ore.  Owen hit nine three-pointers as part of his 33 point night, while setting a new school-record with 18 three-point attempts in the win.  The Beacons used a 9-0 run to take a 37-30 lead with four minutes remaining in the first half, only to watch the Yotes scored the final nine points of the period, capped by an Owen triple to give The C of I a 39-37 halftime edge - a lead they would never relinquish.  The Coyotes would lead by as many as 11 in the second half, only to watch NCC cut the margin to 66-63 on a Josh Jarrett free throw with two minutes left.  However, Steffen Spinks (Manteca, Calif. / East Union HS) answered with a clutch trey in the left corner and Owen iced the game with four free throws in the final minute to give the Yotes their back-to-back wins for the first time since November.

A WIN ON THE GLASS?: For the first time this season, the Coyotes held an advantage in rebounding over their opponent.  The C of I outboarded NCC, 40-32, their best performance since drawing even with Vanguard in Game 2 of the season.

YOTES PUT 96 ON THE BOARD IN LEAGUE PLAY: The C of I had a big night on Saturday at Northwest Christian, scoring 96 points in a 96-73 win over the Beacons.  It marked the most points the Lady Yotes had scored in a CCC game since tallying 93 points vs. Eastern Oregon during the 1999-00 season.  With the win, the Coyotes improved to 22-0 all-time when they score 90-or-more points in a game.

OVER 90 UNDER ROSSI: It marked the eighth time during the seven years Reagan Rossi has been at the helm of the Coyotes that The C of I has scored 90-or-more points.  The Yotes scored 99 against Bethany in 2001, 98 vs. Walla Walla in 2002, 97 vs. Walla Walla in 2004, 94 vs. Fresno Pacific in 2002, 93 vs. Westminster in 2007, 92 vs. Eastern Oregon in a 2002 playoff game, and 90 vs. Warner Pacific in 2007.

“DUFF” HAS BIG NIGHT AT NCC: The Northwest Christian game saw a breakout performance by forward Magen Dufurrena (Denio, Nev. / Lowry HS).  In her second start of the season, “Duff” scored a career high 11 points in the game, while pulling down a season-best nine rebounds.  She also tied a career high with five steals in the win.

OTHER UPPER CLASSMEN PLAY WELL IN EUGENE: Also having a big night at NCC were Christon Vander Esch (Riggins, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC) and Whitney Clark (Jerome, Idaho / Northwest Nazarene U.).  Vander Esch scored a career high 22 points in the victory, and recorded her third double-double of her career, adding ten rebounds.  Clark scored a season-high 27 points in the win – her biggest scoring night since a career high 31 points vs. Corban last season.

HORNER HOT FROM DISTANCE: Helping the Coyote cause off the bench has been transfer ShaNae Horner (West Jordan, Utah / Snow CC), who leads the CCC in three-point percentage.  The junior has hit eight of her last ten three-point attempts and is 11-for-18 from distance in league play.  For the season, Horner has hit 56-percent of her three-point attempts.

C OF I LOSES HILL FOR SEASON: The Coyotes received bad news last week, as post Denise Hill (Eugene, Ore. / Boise State U.) was diagnosed with torn ligaments in her left knee – all but ending her senior season.  Hill currently leads the league in field goal percentage and is third in scoring average and will finish her career among the all-time top-ten in free throws made and attempted.

LADY YOTES SET FOR BATTLE AT EASTERN: The I-84 Cup battle may not have a trophy on the women’s side, but there is no love-loss between the Lady Yotes and Tuesday’s opponent, Eastern Oregon.   The Mountaineers (11-1, 5-0 CCC) are currently ranked No. 22 in the NAIA Division II national poll – with their only loss of the season to Vanguard – ranked No. 2 in the NAIA Division I poll.  However, four of their victories have come by five points or less.  EOU is the top shooting team in the league at 47-percent, while holding a whopping 15-rebound per game edge on their opponents.  Eastern is led by Tiffanie Ulmer (15.2 ppg, 7.8 rpg), Sheena Henderson (12.3 ppg, 7.8 rpg), and Laura Olsen (11.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg).  It is the 28th meeting between the teams since 1995, with the Yotes holding a 14-13 edge, including last season’s 62-56 win in Caldwell.

LAST WIN IN LA GRANDE: The Coyotes have not won a regular season game at Quinn Coliseum against EOU since the 2000-01season.  The last time The C of I earned a victory over the Mounties was in 2002, a 92-71 victory in the CCC Tournament semifinals.

STRUGGLING NORTHWEST HEADS TO THE C OF I: After playing seven straight games on the road and spending six weeks away from the J.A. Albertson Activities Center, the Lady Yotes return home on Friday to host Northwest.  The Eagles (2-12, 1-5) have struggled this season – with just eight players on their roster, losing six games in a row and nine of their last ten.  They are led by Brittany Bowsher (17.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg), the CCC’s leading scorer, and guard Rachel Travis (9.0 ppg, 3.1 rpg).  The Lady Yotes have won five-straight over NU and hold a 20-5 all-time series edge.

EVERGREEN LOOKS TO WIN IN CALDWELL: Saturday, it’s Evergreen State heading to Caldwell, riding high after ending an eight-game losing streak with a victory over Warner Pacific on Saturday night.  The Geoducks (3-12, 2-4) are much better than their record indicates, as three of their losses have been by five points or less.  E-State is led by Jennifer Solberg (13.9 ppg, 9.4 rpg), Kristi Auckland (10.3 ppg, 3.1 rpg), and Rosalind Lee (10.1 ppg, 6.0 rpg).  It is the 21st meeting between the schools, with the Yotes holding a 18-2 all-time series lead.

CAREER RECORD BOOK RECEIVES A SHAKE UP: Three players have found their way in The C of I career record book 12 games into the season.  Whitney Clark is amongst the leaders in nine different categories – No. 3 in three-point attempts (373), No. 4 in three-pointers made (115) and free throws made (253), No. 5 in free throw attempts (328), No. 7 in points scored (965) and field goal attempts (768), No. 8 in field goals made (296), No. 10 in steals (118), and No. 11 in assists (153).  Denise Hill is No. 8 in free throws made (158), No. 10 in free throw attempts (231), while ranking No. 5 in field goal percentage (.484).  Rounding out the group is Christon Vander Esch, who is No. 5 in blocked shots (47) and No. 13 in steals (98).

CCC TOP-6: The first CCC Top-6 Coaches Poll of 2008 was released on Monday, with unbeaten Eastern Oregon continuing to record all 11 first-place votes.  Ironically, the Lady Yotes moved ahead of Southern Oregon – the lone team to top them in CCC play, to No. 2 in the ranking, followed by SOU, Oregon Tech, Concordia, and Corban.  EOU remains the lone team in the NAIA Division II Top-25, sitting at No. 22, while Southern received 11 votes in the final poll of 2007.  The next national poll will be released on Jan. 9 and will be released every Wednesday the rest of the season.

LEAGUE STATISTICS: Twelve games into the season, the Lady Yotes continue to lead the CCC as a team in steals per game (15.8) and turnover margin (+7.2) – ranking No. 5 in steals and No. 8 in turnover margin in the NAIA Division II.  The C of I is second in the loop in scoring offense (77.9) and three-pointers made per game (6.8), No. 3 in free throw percentage (.703) and three-point percentage (.342), No. 5 in field goal percentage (.416) and scoring margin (+4.1), No. 6 in assists per game (14.2), and No. 9 in rebound margin (-5.9), in blocked shots per game (2.1), and in scoring defense (73.8).  Individually, Christon Vander Esch leads the league in steals per game (3.0) is third in blocked shots (1.3), and is tenth in rebounds per game (7.0).  Also in the top-ten is ShaNae Horner, who leads the league in three-point percentage (.556), Kayla Brewer (Arco, Idaho / Butte County HS), who is No. 4 in three-point percentage (.432), Whitney Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS), who is No. 7 in steals (2.0), and Whitney Clark, who is No. 5 in scoring average (15.5) and free throw percentage (.791).

FIRST HALF WOES LEAD TO LOSS AT NNU: Despite turning the ball over 33 times, Northwest Nazarene rode a sizable rebounding edge to stop the Lady Yotes, 79-64, last Monday in the Johnson Sports Center in Nampa.  The win for the Crusaders kept them perfect at home against their Canyon County rivals - dating back to the mid-1970s.  NNU recorded 21 offensive rebounds in the win, holding a commanding 58-26 edge on the glass.  They held the Lady Yotes to just 5-of-28 shooting in the opening half to build a 39-19 edge at the break - a lead that would never go below double-digits the entire second half.  Jennifer Williams had 17 points with Kristin Hein adding 14 points and ten rebounds to lead the Crusaders, who had dropped two of their last three games to the Yotes.  Whitney Clark led the Coyote attack with 19 points, with both Whitney Owen and Christon Vander Esch scoring 11.

YOTES SPRINT PAST NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN: Whitney Clark led five players in double figures with a season-high 27 points, as The College of Idaho improved to 3-0 in road Cascade Conference counters, topping Northwest Christian, 96-73, in snowy Eugene, Ore.  After falling behind by as many as five early, the Yotes used an 11-0 run to take a 19-10 lead with 13 minutes remaining.  After the Beacons pulled within 26-24 with 7:21 left, The C of I scored 17-straight points and coasted to a 49-41 lead at the break.  The second half saw a 15-point run, capped by a ShaNae Horner triple, one of 12 treys made by the Yotes tonight, as the lead ballooned to 69-46 -  a margin that reached 32 points late in the contest.  Clark hit 10-of-15 shots from the floor - her most prolific scoring night since scoring 31 vs. Corban last season.  Christon Vander Esch had a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds in the win, with Horner connecting on 4-of-5 treys en route to her 14 points off the bench.  Whitney Owen added 13 points and seven rebounds, with Magen Dufurrena scoring 11 points, grabbing nine rebounds, and recording five steals.
