VOLLEYBALL: CCC streak ended at Southern Oregon, Yotes put home streak on line vs. Corban and Concordia

LAST WEEK: vs. Lewis-Clark State (W 3-0), at Oregon Tech (W 3-2), at No. 20 Southern Oregon (L 3-1)

COMING UP: vs. Corban, Friday, 7 p.m.; vs. Concordia, Saturday, 7 p.m.

CONFERENCE WIN STREAK ENDED: The last team to defeat The College of Idaho in volleyball became the first team in nearly two seasons to stop the Lady Yote attack, as Southern Oregon stopped The C of I in four games in Ashland, Ore.  The loss snapped a 31-match Cascade Conference win streak by the Coyotes – the second-longest win streak in league history, trailing only the 66-match win streak by Concordia at the start of the century.  The loss occurred in the toughest building The C of I has played in, McNeal Pavilion, where the Yotes have only won three times ever against the Raiders.

MORE ON THE LOSS: Jaclyn Hamilton-Smith paced the Southern Oregon attack with 16 kills, as the No. 20 ranked Raiders took the 30-27, 13-30, 30-24, 30-20 victory over the Coyotes, ending a six-match losing streak to The C of I  After dropping Game 1, the Lady Yotes scored the first ten points of Game 2, building a 16-1 edge - but did not lead again after the mid-match intermission.  An interesting statistic had C of I whistled for 15 ball handling errors in the match, with SOU committing four such errors.  Sarah Buhler (Middleton, Idaho /Middleton HS) led the Yotes attack with 14 kills, with Katie Zillner (Emmett, Idaho / Chicago State U.) adding 12 kills and Kristin Henning (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS) recording seven kills and seven blocks.  Catherine Everist (Portland, Ore. / Chicago State U.) led all players with 25 digs.  Hamilton-Smith, who did not play in the Yotes win over SOU in Caldwell, added seven digs to her ledger, while setter Lindsey Stone recorded a double-double with 47 assists and 13 digs.

OTHER STREAKS ROLL ON: The Yotes, however, extended a pair of long win streaks last week.  With their win over Oregon Tech on Friday night, they extended their streak against teams not receiving votes in the NAIA poll to 57 in a row.  The C of I has not lost a CCC match since the 2005 season, and has not lost a match to a non-receiving votes team since August of 2005.  With the win over Lewis-Clark State, the Lady Yotes have also won 32 games in a row in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center, dating back to the 2005 season.

BACK AT HOME: The Lady Yotes have enjoyed much success in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center over the last 12 years, compiling a 125-36 record in the building – winning 78-percent of their matches.  Over the last three seasons, The C of I has a staggering 44-2 record at home, including the current 32-match home win streak.  Under Liz Mendiola, the Lady Yotes have a 73-12 record at home.

C OF I RALLIES FOR WIN AT OREGON TECH: The C of I withstood an Oregon Tech upset bid Friday night, rallying from two games down to stop the Owls 25-30, 27-30, 30-19, 30-25, 17-15 at Danny Miles Court in Klamath Falls.  Tech did not make it easy, as a 9-1 run in Game 1 gave the hosts the win, then OIT broke a 26-26 tie in Game 2 with three straight points to take the two games to none lead.  However, The C of I would rally, getting three Kathryn Ely (La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS) kills in an 8-0 Game 3 push to get on the board, then got three tandem blocks in a crucial four-point run to break a 20-20 tie in Game 4 to send the match to the deciding game.  OIT jumped out to a 4-0 edge in Game 5, but the Yotes would get two Katie Zillner kills in a 7-0 run to take the lead.  However, the Owls would stave off three match points, tying it at 14-14 and 15-15, before Ely and Zillner notched kills to end the barnburner.  Zillner led The C of I with 15 kills, five blocks, and five digs - one of four players with double-figure kills.  Katie Hogue (Sparks, Nev. / Reed HS) had 12 kills, five blocks, and four aces, Kristin Henning had 12 kills and a match-high nine blocks, with Sarah Buhler adding ten kills and six blocks.  Catherine Everist led the Yotes defensively with 18 digs.

KEY REGIONAL WIN OVER L-C: Paced by 16 team blocks, the Yotes won last Wednesday’s NAIA Battle of Idaho over Lewis-Clark State, 30-25, 30-23, 30-25 in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  Game 1 saw the Frontier Conference leading Warriors cut The C of I lead to 25-24 on a Coyote attack error, but the Yotes rattled off five of the final six points, with Katie Hogue's service ace ending the game.  Game 2 saw the Yotes hold a 15-14 edge, but a five-point push, keyed by a pair of tandem blocks, gave The C of I the momentum to earn the win.  Game 3 was a see-saw affair, as the Coyotes jumped out to a 11-1 edge, only to see L-C score 11 of the next 12 points to draw even.  Tied 23-23 late, an Anne Parker (Pocatello, Idaho / Century HS) kill and a pair of Kathryn Ely spikes capped a four point push that closed out the match.  Ely led the way with ten kills, with Parker adding eight kills and four blocks.  Kristin Henning had seven kills and eight blocks, with Katie Hogue adding seven kills and seven blocks, and Katie Zillner spiking nine balls.  Defensively, Catherine Everist led the Yotes with 21 digs and Stacie Drumm (Salem, Ore. / South Salem HS) added 17.

CHANGES IN THE REGIONAL POLL: The eighth NAIA Region I Top-10 ranking was released on Monday, with major shifting shaking up the regional poll.  For the first time since the preseason poll, The C of I holds the No. 1 spot in the rankings by themselves.  They are followed by Southern Oregon, who climbed to No. 2 with their win over The C of I.  Lewis-Clark State, who lost to the Yotes on Wednesday, moved to the No. 3 spot after sweeping then No. 11 ranked Westminster in Salt Lake City, who fell to No. 4.  Montana Tech rounds out the Top-5.  Oregon Tech begins the bottom five, followed by Rocky Mountain, Great Falls, Eastern Oregon, and Carroll.  The regional poll will be released each Monday afternoon during the regular-season.

NAIA POLL: The Yotes stood pat in last week’s NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll, remaining at to No. 8 – equaling the highest regular-season national ranking in program history.  The C of I has now been ranked in the Top-25 in each of the last 20 rankings.  Eight teams the Yotes faced this season are in the Top-25 - No. 1 Fresno Pacific, No. 4 Biola, No. 6 National American, No. 10 Point Loma Nazarene, No. 11 Westminster, No. 15 Vanguard, No. 20 Southern Oregon and No. 24 Savannah A&D.  The NAIA poll is released each Wednesday afternoon by the national office in Kansas City, Mo.

PREVIOUS NATIONAL POLLS: The Coyotes have been ranked in the Top-25 on 25 occasions in program history – the second (No. 24) and third (No. 19) polls of the 1997 season, the preseason (No. 15) and first poll (No. 19) of the 2001 season, the final poll during the 2005 season (No. 24), the preseason poll and all 11 rankings during the 2006 season, the 2007 preseason poll., and the seven regular-season polls this season.  The C of I has been ranked as high as No. 6 in the poll, that coming during the 2007 preseason poll.

RECORD BOOK: Six Coyotes continued their climb up the career record book.  Katie Hogue ranks first all-time in blocks (517), fourth in kills (1,243), fifth in aces (169), and sixth games played (418).  Anne Parker is fourth all-time in blocks (358) and is ninth in kills (833), with Kathryn Ely now sixth on the all-time kills list (1,053).  Tiffany Sower (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) is now fourth in all-time in aces (171) and is fifth in digs (1,122), while Catherine Everist is third in digs (1,265).  Rounding out the list is the newest member, Kristin Henning, who is ninth in blocks (225) – while playing less than two years.

CONFERENCE / NATIONAL STATISTICS: As a team, the Yotes lead the CCC in aces per game (2.40) and blocks per game (2.96), are second in hitting percentage (.228), kills per game (14.29), and in assists per game (13.08), while they are fourth in digs per game (17.87) – while leading the loop in attack percentage, blocks, and aces in league-only counters.  Individually, Katie Hogue ranks in the Top-10 in three categories – third in blocks (1.27) and hitting percentage (.306), and eighth in aces (0.44).  Other Yotes in the Top-10 are Catherine Everist, who is No. 3 in digs (5.65), Sarah Buhler is No. 4 in blocks (1.07), Ashley Galeai (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS) is No. 4 in aces (0.48) and No. 6 in assists (7.55), and Anne Parker is No. 9 in blocks (0.97).    In league-only games, Kristin Henning leads the league in blocks and hitting percentage, while Katie Hogue is second in both categories.  This season, the NAIA is compiling a weekly national statistical report, thanks to DakStats.  To read the national report, head to http://www.dakstats.com/WebSync/Pages/Team/TeamPage.aspx?association=10&sg=WVB&sea=NAIWVB_2007&team=1900..

BACK HOME TO TAKE ON THE CORBANS AND CONCORDIAS: The Lady Yotes will play four of their final six conference matches this season at home, beginning this weekend against Corban and Concordia.  Friday’s match against Corban (12-9, 9-5 CCC) pits The C of I against a Warrior club that has won four in a row, and has a perfect 6-0 record on the road in league counters.  Leading the attack for Corban is Rachelle Davenport (3.6 k/g, 3.6 d/g) and Margo and Chelsea Reeher (3.1 k/g, 2.5 d/g), while libero Margo Wyatt (5.3 d/g) paces the defense that leads the CCC in digs.  The Yotes defeated the Warriors in three games earlier this month in Salem and holds a 22-10 all-time series edge.  Saturday, the Yotes meet a Concordia (13-11, 8-6) team that has the ability to defeat anyone in the league.  The Cavaliers are led offensively by Raluca Dinca (3.0 k/g, 2.5 d/g) and Katie Shelby (2.5 k/g, 1.7 d/g), while libero Rachel Cotter (6.1 d/g) leads the league in digs per game.  CU is without former NNU standout Lindsey Fryer (3.3 k/g), who was injured in the first meeting between the teams, a 3-0 C of I win.  It is the 52nd meeting between the clubs, with the Yotes holding a 31-20 edge.

ABOUT THE COACH: Liz Mendiola is in her seventh season as The C of I head volleyball coach.  During her first six seasons at the helm, the Coyotes have advanced to six consecutive Cascade Conference tournaments, four NAIA regional tournaments, and back-to-back trips to the NAIA National Championships, amassing a record of 150-63, the most wins in school history.  Last season, she led the Lady Yotes to their best season in program history, compiling a 35-4 record - earning CCC and NAIA Region I Coach of the Year honors.  The C of I won their first Cascade Conference championship in 24 years, becoming just the second school to complete the league schedule without a loss.  The Coyotes also captured their second-straight CCC Tournament title, along with their second-straight NAIA Region I Tournament title, before placing ninth at the NAIA Championships.  Her team set a school-record with 22 straight wins and heads into the 2007 season with a 25-game home win streak and a 45-game win streak against non-ranked opponents, dating back to 2005.  Mendiola was an assistant for the Coyotes on two separate occasions – from 1995-96 and from 1999-2000, before elevating to head coach.  She has also coached club volleyball at Emmett High, for the Treasure Valley Volleyball Club, the Boise River Volleyball Club, and various camps in the Northwest. A native of Jerome, Mendiola graduated from The C of I in 1996 with a degree in elementary education, and taught kindergarten in Nampa before becoming head coach in 2001. A two-year member of the Coyotes, Mendiola set school records for kills per game (4.86) in 1994, and holds the school mark for kills per game in a career (4.46).  She earned All-CCC honors following her senior season with the Yotes. Mendiola is married to former Coyote baseball standout and current C of I softball coach Al Mendiola.  The Mendiola’s have two children, Aleah and Micah, and live in Caldwell.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Lady Yotes win playoff opener, set for Wednesday match-up against No. 4 ranked Concordia

LAST WEEK: vs. Eastern Oregon (L 1-0 OT), CCC Quarterfinals vs. Cascade (W 1-0)

COMING UP: Cascade Conference Semifinals at Concordia (Camas, Wash.), Wednesday, 1 p.m.; Cascade Conference Finals (with win) at Oregon Tech or Corban, Saturday, TBA

LADY YOTES WIN FIRST EVER PLAYOFF GAME: A first half Leah Roach (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) goal stood up, as The College of Idaho women's soccer team won their first playoff game in school history, stopping Cascade College, 1-0, in a Cascade Conference Tournament Quarterfinal game at Symms Field on Saturday afternoon.  Roach got the lone goal of the game in the 11th minute - flicking a redirection of a Mandy Greif (Payette, Idaho / Payette HS) corner kick by Emily Dickerson (Nampa, Idaho / Vallivue HS) over the goal line before a Cascade player cleared the ball.  The T-Birds, who were playing in their first-ever playoff game, had a pair of good chances in the second half, but were turned away by C of I keeper Sadie Hughes (Courtenay, B.C. / Vanier SS), who made five saves.

THE C OF I IN THE PLAYOFFS: The fifth time was the charm for The C of I, as the Purple and Gold ended an all-time four-game postseason losing streak.  The Yotes lost District II semifinal matches to Willamette (L 3-0) in 1991 and Pacific (L 2-0) in 1993, and losing CCC Tournament matches to Concordia (L 9-1) in 2002 and Evergreen State (L 2-1) in 2006, before winning on Saturday.

TOUGH ASSIGNMENT AHEAD: It will truly be a David vs. Goliath match-up on Wednesday, as eight-time defending Cascade Conference champion, Concordia, hosts the Lady Yotes in the semifinal round.  The Cavaliers (15-2) not only completed the 2007 league schedule with a perfect 10-0 record, but they did not allow a goal in league play – thanks to the outstanding play of defender Jackie Pronovost.  Offensively, CU is led by Jessica Rambach (18 goals, 4 assists) and Justine Pronovost (13 goals, 3 assists) – the top scoring duo in the league.  The Lady Yotes will look to end an 18-match losing streak to the Cavaliers and seek revenge for a 5-0 loss to CU two weeks ago.

GAME MOVED TO CAMAS, WASHINGTON: It will be a different venue on Wednesday, as the Concordia-College of Idaho playoff game will not be played on CU’s Portland campus.  Due to poor field conditions, the game has been moved across the Columbia River into Washington, and will be played on the Astroturf field of Camas High School.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

IF THE YOTES WIN: If The C of I pulls off the biggest upset in school history, they will move to Saturday’s title game against either Oregon Tech or Corban, who meet in Wednesday’s other semifinal.  OIT (11-7-1) is on a roll, having won their last three matches to round out loop play to earn a quarterfinal home game, which they topped Warner Pacific, 3-1.  The Owls are led by Katie O’Brien (11 goals, 2 assists) and Jaclyn Unruh (0.80 GAA).  The Yotes defeated Tech, 2-0, in September.  Corban (10-8) earned a first-round bye, winning five of their final six games (the lone loss was to OIT).  Jessica Matthews (8 goals, 4 assists) and Megan Waunch (8 goals, 2 assists) are the top scorers for the Warriors.  The C of I handed Corban a 2-1 defeat to close September.

C OF I GUARANTEED A WINNING RECORD: Over the 19 year history of the Lady Yote women’s soccer program, finishes above the .500 mark have been few and far between – so the success of the 2007 squad is phenomenal.  With an 9-6-3 record, The C of I has guaranteed themselves a winning record for the first time in 12 years, and just the third time in program history.  The first Coyote squad recorded an 8-3 record, while the 1995 team had a 3-1-4 mark.  Both the 1992 and 1993 teams finished at the .500 mark.  Also, the nine wins by the Yotes are the second-most wins by a C of I team – with the 2002 club that finished 10-11 earning more.

COYOTES SET SHUTOUT RECORD: The whitewashing of Cascade on Saturday allowed the Yotes to establish a new school record for shutouts in a season with seven.  The 2007 club broke the previous record of six, set by the 1993 and 2006 teams.  This season, the Lady Yotes have compiled a 1.11 goals against average – allowing just 21 goals in 18 games

TIES GALORE: With three draws this season, the Lady Yotes equaled the 1990 team for the second-most ties in a season.  Only the 1995 season, in which The C of I played even on four occasions, saw the Coyotes record more draws.  That season was also the last time the Yotes had a winning overall record, as The C of I went 3-1-4.

ROACH MOVES UP ON ALL-TIME LIST: With her game winning goal against Cascade, Leah Roach moved alone into third-place on the all-time goals scored list.  The senior has now scored 18 goals in her C of I career.  Kristine Jones (Halter) has the school record with 30 goals from 1990-93, while Becky Robertson is in the No. 2 spot, scoring 27 goals during the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

EASTERN SPOILS REGULAR-SEASON FINALE: Lauren Souza slotted home the game-winning goal eight minutes into overtime, as visiting Eastern Oregon spoiled The College of Idaho's Senior Day with a 1-0 victory at Symms Field.  The Mountaineers, who played on the defensive most of the afternoon, worked a perfect counter-attack during a driving rainstorm during the extra session.  Courtney Gaskell picked up a loose ball on the right flank and threaded a pass to Souza at the right corner of the box, where she slotted a shot to the left of Coyote keeper Sadie Hughes, finding the corner of the net to end the match.  The C of I had numerous chances throughout the match and nearly won it in the final minute of regulation.  A foul just outside the penalty box allowed Allie Dufault (Irvine, Calif. / University HS) a free kick - which she rattled the top right corner of the cage with 20-seconds left.  Statistically, the Yotes dominated, holding a 20-8 edge in shots and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks - but could not find the net.

COYOTES FALL OUT OF REGIONAL POLL: Despite a 1-1 week, the Lady Yotes fell out of the latest NAIA Region I Top-5 rankings, released Monday.  Concordia continues to lead the poll, followed by Carroll and Simon Fraser.  Oregon Tech moved into the No. 4 spot, with Corban at No. 5 – despite The C of I holding victories over both teams.

ABOUT THE COACH: Niki Taylor is in her second season has head coach of The C of I women's program and has an overall record of 15-16-5. In her first season with the Coyotes, she helped to their fourth-ever postseason berth, losing the Evergreen State, 2-1, in the Cascade Conference playoffs.  A graduate of Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., Taylor was an honorable mention all-conference player for the Bulldogs in 1999 and 2000, helping the squad to an NCAA Division II regional championships.  She went on to assist coach Mike Cannon during the 2001 season, helping TSU to the regional finals, then moved West, where she was an assistant for Steve Lucas at Boise State for three seasons.  She has also been involved with the Les Bois United Soccer Club for the past four years, while serving as a head coach in the Idaho Olympic Development Program.  Taylor has received her USSF "B" Coaching License.

MEN’S SOCCER: C of I’s Regional Tournament hopes rest with home tilts against Warner Pacific and Concordia

LAST WEEK: at Northwest Christian (W 5-0), at Corban (W 2-1)

COMING UP: vs. Warner Pacific, Friday, 3 p.m.; vs. Concordia, Saturday, 2 p.m.

YOTES WITH PLAYOFF DESTINY IN OWN HANDS: Heading into the final weekend of the regular-season, the Coyotes face a must-win scenario if they are to move on to next weekend’s NAIA Region I Tournament.  Concordia has already clinched the regular-season title and one of two automatic berths to the Regional, while Warner Pacific sits five points ahead of The C of I.  If the Yotes defeat WP on Friday and Concordia on Saturday, they will finish one point ahead of Warner, and earn the CCC’s second automatic berth to the Regional.

AT LEAST 11 WINS, BUT MAYBE NO PLAYOFFS?: The quirky NAIA Soccer playoff system could see the Coyotes win as many as 12 games this season and may be on the outside looking in come playoff time.  If The C of I finishes in third-place in the CCC standings, they would have to qualify as one of the two at-large teams in the four-team tournament.  These berths are based on Longo Rating – points given to strength of schedule, quality of wins, and margin of victory.  Regardless of their Longo, the Yotes will lose out to Westminster – as the Griffins would move ahead of The C of I because of their 3-0 victory over the Purple and Gold on August 29.  Luckily for the Yotes, this season is the final time regional independents will be in the mix, as next year, the Cascade Conference will have an automatic berth to the NAIA Championships.

ABOUT WARNER PACIFIC: For the Yotes to have any chance at the postseason, they will first have to defeat the hottest team in the loop, Warner Pacific.  The Knights (10-6, 10-3 CCC) have won seven matches in a row and ten of their last 11 – including a streak of six consecutive games scoring at least three goals.  The offense is paced by 6-2 junior college transfer Davor Lukic (10 goals, 7 assists) and All-CCC selections Chris Price (8 goals, 11 assists) and J.B. Cunha (6 goals, 2 assists).  WP broke a 1-1 tie with a late goal by Price in late September to top The C of I, 2-1.  It is the 26th all-time meeting, with the Yotes holding a 13-10-2 series edge.

ABOUT CONCORDIA: For the second time in three years, the Coyotes may have to defeat their biggest CCC rival, Concordia, to have a chance at the playoffs.  The Cavaliers (14-3, 12-1) clinched the sixth-straight CCC Championship (they shared the 2006 title with The C of I) with a win over Cascade on Monday and is playing solely for Longo Points – in their quest to be the No. 1 seed in the Regional Tournament.  Dan Birkey’s bunch has won four in a row and 11-of-12, thanks to an offense that has scored 52 goals this season, but allowed just 15.  Alex Ponce (13 goals, 13 assists) is the odds-on favorite for CCC Player of the Year honors, while Joey Graham (9 goals, 6 assists) had the game-winner in a 3-2 win over the Yotes in September.  Keeper Garrett Staples (0.94 GAA) is solid, leading the loop with eight shutouts.  The C of I hopes for a better effort than their last must-win game vs. CU – they lost the 2005 meeting, 2-1.  It is the 40th all-time meeting between the teams, with the Yotes holding a slim 20-18-1 edge.

GOALS SCORED UNDER SMITTY: With seven goals scored on the recent road trip to Oregon, the Coyotes have now scored the most goals in a season under Brian Smith.  Through 16 games, the Yotes have scored 47 goals, 11 goals ahead of the 36 they scored last season in 19 matches.  The most goals The C of I had tallied under “Smitty” was 41, back in 2004.  The school record for goals scored in a season is 73, set back in 2003.

C OF I IN REGIONAL RANKINGS: For the third-straight week, The C of I was in the NAIA Region I Top-5 regional ranking, remaining at No. 5.  Simon Fraser, ranked No. 10 nationally, is No. 1, followed by Concordia, Westminster, Warner Pacific, and the Yotes.  The regional poll is released each Monday afternoon, while the NAIA Top-25 poll is released each Wednesday.

COYOTES BLANK NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN: Antonio Bautista (Homedale, Idaho / Homedale HS) had two goals and an assist, helping The College of Idaho men's soccer team to their fourth-consecutive win, stopping Northwest Christian, 5-0, in Eugene, Ore., on Friday night.  Bautista earned his assist on the eventual game-winning goal, as Alex Penrod (Las Vegas, Nev. / Cimarron-Memorial HS) knocked home the game winner in the 11th minute.  The C of I would make it 2-0 just before halftime, as Emir Kobic (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) followed a Kazuki Murata (Tokyo, Japan / Ichiritu HS) shot with an empty net goal.  The second half saw the Yotes put the game away, as Stephen Reinschmidt (Mountain Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS) collected a loose ball and scored, with Bautista capping the scoring with two late goals - one off an Esteban Cabrera (Quito, Ecuador / Payette HS) assist.  The C of I held a commanding 35-6 edge in shots on the Beacons and a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.

C OF I EARNS KEY WIN AT CORBAN: The Yotes kept their postseason hopes alive, rallying from an early deficit to stop Corban College, 2-1, in Salem, Ore., on Saturday afternoon.  The win by the Yotes extended their win streak to five and allows The C of I to clinch a regional playoff spot with wins next week against Warner Pacific and Concordia.  After the Warriors got a Joshua Crain goal just eight minutes into the match, the Coyotes battled back, tying up the score in the 32nd minute on an Alex Penrod goal off a Garga Caserta (Aracatuba, Brazil / North Idaho CC) feed, then won the game in the 53rd minute on a Caserta free kick which found the foot of Mauricio Both (Cacheoira de Sol, Brazil / Nampa HS), who found the net for the victory.

SENIOR DAY ON SATURDAY: Saturday marks the final home game for five seniors on the Coyote squad.  Keeper Jay Gentle (Boise, Idaho / Walla Walla CC) and defender Cameron Johnson (Eagle, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC) have been with the squad two years, while the other three seniors – forward Scott Ward (Rexburg, Idaho / Madison HS), midfielder Michael Delgado (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS), and defender Stephen Reinschmidt are in their fourth season with the Yotes.

ABOUT THE COACH: Brian Smith is in his fourth season as head coach of The C of I men's soccer team and has compiled a 41-24-3 overall mark.  In his first season two seasons, the Coyotes narrowly missed a spot in the NAIA Region I Tournament, despite a second and third-place finish in the Cascade Conference standings.  Last season, however, the Yotes claimed their first CCC title since 2001 and advanced to the regional semifinals.  For his efforts, the Coyote skipper was named CCC Coach of the Year.  Smith, who helped the Coyotes to a 35-21-1 record as a player for longtime coach, John Calpin, from 1990-93, returned to his alma mater in 2004 after a successful high school coaching career in the Treasure Valley.  He coached the Timberline High School boys’ team for three years, before taking over the THS girls’ program in 2002 – earning Idaho State Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2001 and Southern Idaho Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2003.  After earning All-District honors as a player, he graduated from The C of I with a degree in political science in 1994.

CROSS COUNTRY: Helm wins CCC title, Women place second, Men third, at CCC Championships

COMING UP: Idle until November 3 at NAIA Region I Championships, Olympia, Wash.

LAST WEEK: Hosted Cascade Conference Championships, presented by Bandanna Running – Men 3rd-Place out of 10 teams, Women 2nd-Place out of 10 teams.

HELM ON TOP OF THE CASCADE CONFERENCE: For the first time in school history, The College of Idaho has a individual cross country champion, as Stephanie Helm (Challis, Idaho / Challis HS) defeated a field of 82 runners on Saturday morning at the Cascade Conference Championships, presented by Bandanna Running, at Eagle Island State Park.  The freshman ran a tactical race to perfection, staying on the hip of Northwest University’s Beth Knudtson throughout the first loop, then made the pass early on the second loop – eventually winning the race in 18:47, 13 seconds faster than any other runner.  She helped the Lady Yotes to their best finish ever in the event – a second-place finish, just three points behind Eastern Oregon in the team race.  For her efforts, Helm was selected by the CCC coaches as Women’s Runner of the Year.

SPARKS STEPS UP IN A BIG WAY: The Yotes were without the services of senior Lauren Plymire (Beaverton, Ore. / Eastern Oregon U.), their typical No. 2 or 3 scoring runner, due to injury on Saturday, so stepping up for The C of I was Stephanie Sparks (West Jordan, Utah / Juan Diego HS).  The sophomore ran the best cross country race of her young collegiate career, placing sixth overall in 19:33 – 48 seconds faster than what she ran on the same course (which was in good shape in September, unlike the muddy conditions on Saturday) during the Bob Firman Invitational.

FOUR ALL-CCC PERFORMERS: The Top-12 finishers in each race earn All-CCC honors – with the Lady Yotes having four competitors earning the award.  Joining Stephanie Helm and Stephanie Sparks on the team were sophomore Chantel Varland (Meridian, Idaho / Mountain View HS) and Molli Lee-Painter (Moscow, Idaho / Moscow HS).  Varland placed 11th in the race, while Lee-Painter finished in 12th-place, one spot ahead of her 2006 finish.

HOPPER LATE PUSH NETS SECOND-PLACE: The men’s team race was dominated by Eastern Oregon and Southern Oregon – with EOU winning the title by 13 points.  However, the individual championship was a two-man race, between Oregon Tech’s Korey Humberston and the Yotes Tyler Hopper (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS).  Humberston opened up a 70-meter lead midway through the race, while The C of I senior remained in the main pack.  However, late in the race, Hopper made a major push, drawing within strides of the OIT runner within the final 400-meters, but could not get closer, as Humberston won the title by a mere eight-tenths of a second.  For Hopper, it is the third time he has earned All-CCC honors, with the second-place finish the best of his C of I cross country career.

SARTIN SHINES IN EAGLE: As a team, the Coyotes finished in third-place for the second-straight season – with the result helped by the running of newcomer, Paul Sartin (Meridian, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS).  The true freshman has steadily improved throughout the year and stepped up in the big stage, finishing as the Yotes No. 3 runner in 18th-place, with a time of 27:17 in the mud.

SPECIAL THANKS: The eleven participating teams were welcomed by rain in the Treasure Valley last Friday, but cloudy, cool conditions were perfect for the race on Saturday.  The event went off without a hitch, thanks to the countless volunteers who helped out at Eagle Island, along with the sponsors who set the bar high for future CCC Championships.  The Coyotes and the CCC thank you!!!

REGIONAL POLLS: Following the CCC Championships, The C of I women fell one spot in the latest NAIA Region I Top-10 ranking to No. 5, while the men’s team remained at No. 4.  Simon Fraser continues to hold the top spot in the women’s poll, followed by British Columbia, Lewis-Clark State, Eastern Oregon, and the Lady Yotes.  Corban, Northwest, Carroll, Oregon Tech, and Evergreen State round out the Top-10.  On the men’s side, Lewis-Clark State is No. 1, followed by Eastern Oregon, Southern Oregon, the Yotes, and Simon Fraser.  Corban, which placed fourth at the CCC Championships, is sixth, followed by British Columbia, Northwest, Carroll, and Evergreen State.  The regional poll is released each Monday, while the next NAIA National Top-25 ranking will be released on Wednesday (The C of I women were ranked No. 18 and the men were ranked No. 20 in last week’s poll).

A WEEK OFF: The Coyotes will take a week off from competition, focusing on a solid regiment of training to prepare for the NAIA Region I Championships, set for November 3, in Olympia, Wash.

SWIMMING: Coyotes nearly win dual with L&C, C of I improves on NAIA qualifying marks

COMING UP: Idle until Nov. 10 – women hosting Boise State and Mesa State, 1 p.m.

LAST WEEK: at Lewis & Clark (Men L 92-70, Women L 148-54)

MEN NEARLY TOP LEWIS & CLARK: The College of Idaho men’s swim team nearly pulled off their first dual meet victory in the four-year history of the program, but dropped a 92-70 short-course decision Saturday at Lewis & Clark College.  In contested races, the Yotes won 5-of-8 events, but L&C was able to pick up the team victory, thanks to the 31 points won in uncontested races.  Leading the way was Casey Walker (Caldwell, Idaho), who won a pair of events for the second-straight meet – claiming the 100-backstroke (57.23) and the 200-medley (2:08.37), blasting the IM school record by seven seconds.  Also earning an individual win for the Yotes was Scott Mikelonis (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS), who got the victory in the 100-breaststroke (1:09.19).  John Green (Pleasanton, Calif. / Foothill HS) was matched-up against one of the top sprinters in the Northwest Conference in his two races and placed second in both – meeting the NAIA “A” qualifying time in the 50-free (22.67) for the third-straight year.  Also victories were The C of I’s two relays teams, improving NAIA marks by a second in both the 200-free (1:34.67) and 200-medley (1:44.12).

WOMEN IMPROVE IN FIVE EVENTS: The Lady Yotes had one individual winner on Saturday, as sophomore Ellen Judd (Missoula, Mont. / Sentinel HS) won the 100-breaststroke (1:16.21), while Annie Kerrick (Lewiston, Idaho / Lewiston HS) placed second in the 100-backstroke (1:08.06) – improving on her own school record.  Four others set season-bests for The C of I – Ali Cabrera (Payette, Idaho / Payette HS) in the 50-free (28.65), Annie Younggren (Island City, Ore. / La Grande HS) in the 100-free (1:01.51), Hayley Pitzele (Sammamish, Wash. / Skyline HS) in the 500-free (6:00.80), with the 200-medley relay team improving on their NAIA “A” qualifying time (2:02.11).

NATIONAL QUALIFIERS: The Yotes currently have three individual qualifiers that have met NAIA “A” standards – Casey Walker in the 100-backstroke, John Green in the 50-free, and Alphonsina Savell (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS) in the 100-breaststroke.  Unlike in other sports, the NAIA “B” standards are only used if an athlete has already qualified for Nationals with an “A” mark – known as a Bonus Cut.  All three athletes have met the “B” mark in at least one event – Walker in both the 100-butterfly and 200-medley, Green in the 100-free, and Savell in the 200-medley.  Also headed to Nationals from The C of I are four relay team – the 200-free and 200-medley squads from both the men and women.

BREAK WEEK OFF: The Yotes will take this week off, as The C of I is holding its mid-semester break.  The men’s team will not compete again until the end of November at the Northwest Invitational, while the women’s team will host their first triangular dual of the year, welcoming in Boise State and Mesa State on November 10.

ABOUT THE COACH: Mary Parsons is in her first season as The C of I swim coach. Parsons replaced Mike Shines, who coached the Coyotes for the past three seasons - leading The C of I to back-to-back Top-15 finishes at the NAIA Championships. A native of Caldwell, Parsons had a decorated collegiate career at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, holding the school record in the 100-butterfly (59.78) for 23 years. She was a five-time NAIA All-American, placing second in the 100-fly, fifth in the 200-fly, and seventh in the 200-medley at the 1983 NAIA Championships, while swimming as a member of the Western Conference of Individual Colleges All-Star team. Parsons last coached at Crescenta Valley High School in California, but has spent much of the last two decades coaching her family. She and husband, Lee, have three children - Hailey (19), Basil (17), and Richard (15). "I have really worked hard coaching my family - and now I'll have a chance to work with a new family, the Coyotes."
