MEN’S BASKETBALL: Coyotes look to end losing streak with win on Senior Night against Northwest Christian

COMING UP: vs. Northwest Christian, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

LAST WEEK: at Evergreen State (L 79-68), at Northwest (L 94-80), vs. No. 9 Eastern Oregon (L 85-77).

CHECK PRESENTATION FROM PAUL’S MARKET: At halftime of Friday’s game against Northwest Christian, C of I alumnus Stan Zatica will present a check to current C of I student, Ben Nass in the amount of $8,500 for winning the Paul’s Market Shoot-For-Tuition contest last month.  On Jan. 25, Nass converted a lay-up, free throw, three-pointer, and half court shot in 25 seconds, earning free Spring Tuition from Paul’s Market.

HALL OF FAMER IN TOWN: Also at halftime Friday night, the Yotes will honor their all-time leading scorer in school history, as Taft Jackson will be in attendance for the Northwest Christian game.  Jackson was a three-time All-Northwest Conference selection in the 1960s, scoring over 900 points in a season, tallying 2,336 points in his C of I career.

RADIO/INTERNET: All 30 regular-season games and all playoff games will be broadcast live in the Treasure Valley on 1490 KCID-AM, the Home of the Coyotes.  Sports information director Mike Safford returns for his seventh-year as Voice of the Coyotes, with the pregame show beginning 20-minutes prior to tip-off each night.  It is still up in the air whether Friday’s game will be carried on the internet – if it is, the game can be accessed at www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/caa/radio.htm.

A MAINSTAY IN THE PLAYOFFS: With the win on Feb. 9 against Concordia, the Yotes secured their 11th-striaght postseason berth in the Cascade Conference Tournament and their 26th playoff appearance in the last 27 years.  Outside of the 1996-97 season, the Coyotes have played in the postseason every year in the Marty Holly-Mark Owen era.  In the CCC Tourney, the Yotes have posted a 12-4 record under Owen, including tourney titles in 2001, 2003, and 2004.

YOTES POSTSEASON HISTORY: The Yotes have a rich history of playoff success in the last quarter century, winning six NAIA District titles (1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991) and three CCC titles (1993, 1996, 2004).  In program history, The C of I has appeared in the NAIA Tournament on 17 occasions, including last season, the most trips to the Big Dance than any other CCC school – including the 1996 NAIA Division II national championship.

LOOKING AT THE POSSIBLE SEEDING: The Coyotes will most likely end up as the No. 7 team in the CCC Tournament, as The C of I loses all tiebreakers with the two teams directly ahead of them in the standings – Concordia and Northwest.  The Yotes can move into the No. 6 spot (and a date with either Warner Pacific or Evergreen State) with a win Friday over Northwest Christian and Northwest losses to Cascade and Warner Pacific.  However, The C of I can fall to No. 8 with a loss to NCC and an NCC win over Eastern Oregon – as both teams would have 9-11 records, with NCC winning the third-tiebreak, thanks to their win over EOU.  The most likely scenario will have the Yotes meet Oregon Tech in a No. 2 vs. No. 7 match-up in Klamath Falls on Wednesday night.

CHAMP IS TOPS IN THE NATION: With ten combined steals in the Coyotes last three games, Bryan Champ (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) remains in the No. 1 spot among all NAIA Division II players in steals per game (3.3) and overall steals (96) for the fourth-straight week.  The junior also climbed to No. 3 on the all-time steals list with 179, while his 96 steals this season ranks No. 3 on the season record list.  Former assistant, Joe Green, holds the top two spots on the list (116 and 107).  Champ has recorded a steal in 26-straight games this season, while recording three or more steals in 12 of his last 14 games.

OWEN LOOKS TO ADD TO HIS POINT TOTAL ON SENIOR NIGHT: With three double figure games, including his fourth 30-or-more point scoring night of the season, Josh Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) continued to up his career points total, moving the mark to 1,532.  The senior has some work to do to move higher on the ladder, sitting 105 points behind No. 3 Kade Wilson (1,637 points).  Taft Jackson (2,336 points) and R.C. Owens (2,155 points) hold down the top two spots on the list.  Owen has now hit 272 three’s in his career – 27 behind Kade Wilson’s school record.  With five more assists this season, Owen could become the first C of I player to record 1,500 points, 300 assists, and 150 steals in a season.

MAGGARD HAS CAREER GAME: As his final home game approaches on Friday night, J.R. Maggard (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) will look back fondly on his performance at Evergreen State on Friday night as an all-timer.  The senior connected on 12-of-17 shots from the floor, scoring a career-high 24 points in the loss.  Since joining the starting line-up early in the season, Maggard is averaging 11 points and seven rebounds per game – ranking among the Cascade Conference top-ten in field goal percentage and rebounds in league-counters.

ABOUT NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN: The Coyotes round out the regular season tonight, hosting Northwest Christian.  The Beacons (10-18, 7-11 CCC) are the newest member of the Cascade Conference, after years as members of the United States Collegiate Athletics Association.  NCC has struggled of late, losing three of their last four and four of their last six, but can clinch the No. 8 spot in the CCC Tournament with a win.  They are led by All-CCC candidate Josh Jarrett (18.4 ppg, 8.4 rpg), along with guards Jordan Whittenburg (10.7 ppg) and Peter Nelson (10.0 ppg, 2.6 rpg). The Yotes defeated the Beacons, 73-63, in January, thanks to 33 points from Josh Owen.  It is the sixth meeting between the teams, with The C of I holding a 5-0 all-time series edge.

CAREER RECORD BOOK: The Coyote career record book continues to shuffle each week, as a pair of Yotes continue their assault on history.  Josh Owen ranks in the Top-10 in eleven categories – including No. 2 in career three-pointers made (272) and attempted (687), along with field goal attempts (1,185). He is fourth in points scored (1,532), fifth in field goals made (500), sixth in steals (156), is seventh in assists (295), games played (116), and free throw percentage (.844), is No. 8 in free throws made (270), and is ninth in free throw attempts (320).  Also on the list is junior Bryan Champ, who is No. 4 in career steals (179).  Both Owen and Champ have cracked the single-season list as well – Owen eighth with 87 three-pointers made and tenth with 217 three-point attempts, while Champ is third in single-season steals with 96.

CASCADE CONFERENCE TOP-SIX:  The latest CCC Top-6 Coaches Poll was released on Monday – as Oregon Tech remains in the No. 1 spot, followed by Eastern Oregon, Evergreen State, Warner Pacific, Concordia, and Northwest.  Oregon Tech was ranked No. 4 and Eastern Oregon No. 9 in the latest NAIA Top-25 poll, while Evergreen State and Warner Pacific received votes.  The C of I has a streak of 15 consecutive years of Top-25 rankings on the line in 2007-08, which looks like it will come to an end.  Next week will have the final CCC Poll, along with the final NAIA Top-25 – which will base all at-large teams for the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo.

CASCADE CONFERENCE LEADERS: Scoring Average – Nate Menefee (ESC) 23.4, Scott O’Gallagher (WP) 23.2, Ryan Fiegi (OIT) 19.7, Mark Carollo (EOU) 18.8, Josh Jarrett (NCC) 18.4; Rebound Average – Jalonta Martin (WP) 8.6, Josh Wetzler (OIT) 8.5, Jarrett 8.4, Ryan Barker (CAS) 7.6, Paul Carollo (EOU) 7.6; Field Goal Percentage – Wetzler .718, Kyle Janke (EOU) .608, Matt Ochs (CU) .596, Christian Cavanaugh (OIT) .583, Wade Douglas (CRB) .558; Assists Average – Jesse Alvarez (CU) 5.6, Fiegi 5.4, Jeremy Templeton (EOU) 4.5, Martin 4.4, O’Gallagher 3.8; Steals Average – Bryan Champ (CI) 3.3, Alvarez 2.2, Josh Jackson (WP) 2.0, Menefee 2.0, Mike Ward (ESC) 2.0.

YOTES GIVE UP BIG LEAD IN LOSS AT EVERGREEN: A six minute scoring drought in the second half erased an outstanding first half by The C of I, as No. 23 ranked Evergreen State rallied for a 79-68 victory over the Yotes on Friday.  The Geoducks used a 14-0 run, forcing the Yotes into five turnovers and nine straight missed field goals, building a 58-47 lead with 10:38 remaining and cruised to the win.  The C of I jumped out early, using a 9-0 run to take an 11-4 lead four minutes in, a lead that ballooned to 30-13 on a Bryan Champ trey with nine minutes remaining in the period.   However, Evergreen would chip away, cutting the margin to 43-38 at the break - using the big push to take control in the second stanza.  Mike Ward had 18 points and six rebounds for the victors, who extended their win streak to eight games.  The Yotes did not have balance, as all 68 points were scored by their starting five.  J.R. Maggard had a career-high 24 points, with Josh Owen adding 18 points and six assists.

THREE-POINT BLITZ GIVES NORTHWEST WIN: Northwest University hit 15 three-point baskets, using a big second half surge to upend The C of I, 94-80, on Saturday night.  The Eagles hit ten of their bombs in the opening period, as NU opened a 54-41 lead at halftime.  After the Yotes closed within 54-44 early in the second half, Northwest would put the game away with a 23-3 run, leading by as many as 32 points, before the Coyotes chipped away at the margin in the end.  Derek Miller had a career-high 27 points for the Eagles, including eight three-point baskets, while Pat Mattson had 14 points and 11 rebounds.  The Coyotes got 33 points from Josh Owen in the loss, with Bryan Champ adding 14 points, and J.R. Maggard 11.

EASTERN TAKES I-84 CUP: Eastern Oregon hit seven of their first eight three-point attempts in the second half, opening up a 21-point margin and cruised to an 85-77 victory over The C of I on Tuesday.  After trailing by as many as 16 in the first half, the Yotes got buckets from Bryan Champ and Kurt Nielson (Rexburg, Idaho / Eastern Utah CC) to open the second half, cutting the Eastern lead to 36-31.  However, three treys each from Marc Carollo and Neil Fryer jumpstarted the visitors, extending the lead to 64-44 with ten minutes left on a Fryer triple from the left corner.  Carollo had a game-high 25 points, with Josh Landsverk adding 16 points, and Paul Carollo 12 points and 14 rebounds - as EOU won their third-straight victory over The C of I.  Josh Owen led all scorers with 27 points for the Coyotes, who lost their third-straight game.  Kurt Nielson had a career-high 18 points in the loss, with Bryan Champ scoring 15.  The Coyote starters scored 75 of their 77 points in the game.

LADY YOTES CLINCH HOME PLAYOFF BERTH: With a win on Feb. 9 against Concordia, the Lady Yotes became one of three teams to clinch a home playoff game in the eight-team Cascade Conference Tournament, beginning next Tuesday.  The C of I has now advanced to the postseason in 12 of the 13 seasons since women’s basketball was reinstated at the College in 1995.  The Coyotes have advanced to three NAIA Division II national tournaments (1998 – first round, 2000 – quarterfinals, 2001 – championship game), but have never won a CCC Tournament title (advanced to the finals in 2000, 2002, and 2005).   The Lady Yotes have hosted a postseason game three of the last four seasons and has a 5-1 all-time record at home during the payoffs.

WHO WILL THE YOTES PLAY: The Lady Yotes are locked into either the No. 3 or No. 4 spot in the CCC Tournament and can clinch the No. 3 spot with a win Friday against Northwest Christian, or a loss by Oregon Tech to either Corban or Concordia – as The C of I holds all tiebreakers with both OIT and Concordia.  If the Coyotes are in the No. 4 seed, they will play Concordia on Tuesday night, while if they are the No. 3 seed, they will face the No. 6 seed – either Northwest Christian, Evergreen State, or Cascade.

PLAYOFF GAME INFORMATION: Tickets for Tuesday’s CCC Tournament game will not go on sale prior to the day of the game.  Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. on game day, with admission prices set at $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for students (5-to-17) – as all tickets will be general admission.  No passes will be issued, except for those with NAIA Championship passes.

LAST HURRAH FOR SENIORS: Friday’s game will mark the final home regular-season game for four Coyote players.  Two of the student-athletes – Denise Hill (Eugene, Ore. / Boise State U.) and Liz Mortensen (San Diego, Calif. / Horizon HS) will not be in uniform.  Hill was injured ten games into the season and is out for the year, but put up nearly 17 points and seven rebounds a game in the contests she played.  Mortensen recently graduated from the College with a degree in biology.  The other two seniors – Whitney Clark (Jerome, Idaho / Northwest Nazarene U.) and Magen Dufurrena (Denio, Nev. / Lowry HS) have been starters all season – Clark recording a staggering 63 double-figure scoring games in her career, ranking fourth all-time with 1,195 points scored, while “Duff” has recorded 336 rebounds and 112 steals in her career.

80 POINTS A NIGHT EQUALS WINS: When scoring at least 80 points in a game this season, the Lady Yotes have a perfect record, going 8-0 when hitting the magic number.  However, the club is 7-5 when scoring 70-79 points, and have a 1-5 record when failing to reach the 70 point plateau.

VANDER ESCH LEADS LOOP IN STEALS AND BLOCKS: Forward Christon Vander Esch (Riggins, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC) continues to lead the Cascade Conference in steals per game (3.0) and blocked shots per game (1.9), with just one week remaining in the regular season.  The junior also leads the Lady Yotes 67 assists and 179 rebounds this season, while averaging nearly 12 points per game.

OWEN HAS STREAK ENDED: Coyote win Whitney Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) had scored at least three points in each of the first 25 games this season, but saw the streak ended with just two points in 16 minutes against Eastern Oregon.  The sophomore also had a streak of  four-or-more rebound games ended at 17 against the Mountaineers.  Owen has recorded six-or-more rebounds in 11 of her last 17 outings – upping her season average to five rebounds a game.  She set new career highs for both scoring and rebounding against Corban on Feb. 8, tallying 19 points and ten boards.

NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN MAKES CALDWELL DEBUT: The Lady Yotes look to end a three-game losing streak tonight, as Northwest Christian makes their first-ever appearance in Caldwell.  The Beacons (14-14, 8-10) have struggled of late, as head coach Charlie Olds resigned three weeks ago, with the team losing four of their last five games, all by double-digits.  NCC had to deal with CCC MVP candidate Emily Gray (19.2 ppg, 9.2 rpg) going down with a season-ending knee injury in December, but have gotten great production from her twin-sister Elise Gray (11.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg), along with guards Jacquie Lipp (9.3 ppg, 3.2 rpg) and Lori Renner (8.8 ppg, 3.7 rpg).  The Yotes won the first meeting of the season, 96-73, in Eugene, Ore., in January.

CAREER RECORD BOOK: Three players have found their way in The C of I career record book during the 2007-08 season.  Whitney Clark is amongst the leaders in ten different categories – No. 3 in three-pointers made (142), free throws made (300) and three-pointers attempted (443), No. 4 in points scored (1,195), field goal attempts (973), and free throw attempts (391), No. 5 in field goals made (374),  No. 6 in steals (140) and games started (65), and No. 10 in assists (184).  Denise Hill is No. 8 in free throws made (158), No. 10 in free throw attempts (231), while ranking No. 5 in field goal percentage (.484).  Rounding out the group is Christon Vander Esch who is No. 2 in blocked shots (81) and No. 5 in steals (141).  Vander Esch also ranks No. 3 on the single-season steals list (48) and No. 4 on the single-season blocks list (49), while Clark is No. 8 in free throws made in a season (100).

CCC TOP-6: The latest CCC Top-6 Coaches Poll was released on Monday, with Southern Oregon staking claim to the top spot for the third straight week.  Eastern Oregon remains at No. 2, followed by the Lady Yotes, Oregon Tech, Concordia, and Evergreen State.  Southern Oregon is now the lone team ranked in the Top-25 at No. 22, while Eastern Oregon is the first time listed in the “Others Receiving Votes” category.  The final national poll of the season will be released on Feb. 27, which will help base the at-large bids to the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.

CASCADE CONFERENCE INDIVIDUAL TOP-FIVE: Scoring Average – Jessica Steigleman (CRB) 17.8, Brittany Bowsher (NU) 17.2, Whitney Clark (CI) 16.0, Crystal Idrogo (OIT) 15.9, Tiffanie Ulmer (EOU) 15.3; Rebound Average – Te Awhina Aranui (CAS) 12.2, Jennifer Solberg (ESC) 9.4, Jacki Speer (SOU) 9.0, Ulmer 7.7, Emily Goette (CRB) 7.5; Field Goal Percentage – Ulmer .545, Danielle Clauson (CU) .520, Sheena Henderson (EOU) .518, Goette .514, Idrogo .498; Assists Average – Kailey Bostwick (CRB) 5.4, Meagan Miyasaka (OIT) 5.0, Amy Croll (NCC) 4.9, Karissa Boyd (WP) 4.7, Phieban Mulatu (CAS) 3.8; Steals Average – Christon Vander Esch (CI) 3.0; Chelsey Muri (SOU) 2.4, Croll (2.2), Mulatu (2.1), Whitney Owen (CI) 2.1.

SECOND HALF SURGE LIFTS EVERGREEN PAST LADY YOTES: 15-1 second half run gave Evergreen State the lead for good, as the Geoducks upset The C of I, 79-71, Friday night in Olympia, Wash.  Eagle native Molly Clark canned a long three in transition to give the Geoducks a 55-48 lead with 13:16 remaining, then hung on down the stretch.  The Lady Yotes cut the margin to three on four different occasions, but could not get closer, as a Kristi Auckland trey with 2:06 left provided the dagger.  The C of I jumped out to a 18-6 lead, but watched as the hosts clawed back within 37-36 at the break.  Six straight Whitney Clark points early in the second half gave the Yotes a 47-40 lead, but the Geoducks run was too much.  Joy White led Evergreen with 19 points, including 11-of-12 shooting from the line, with Auckland adding 17 points, and Rosiland Lee providing a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards.  Josie Pugsley (Park Valley, Utah / Snow CC) led three Coyotes in double figures with 13 points, with Clark scoring 12, and Kayla Brewer (Arco, Idaho / Butte County CC) ten.

C OF I STUNNED AT NORTHWEST: Rachel Travis hit her sixth three-pointer of the second half with 25 seconds remaining, capping a 14-0 run to close the game, as Northwest University upset The C of I, 77-74, Saturday night in Kirkland, Wash.  The Lady Yotes seemingly had the game in hand, leading 63-43 with 10:45 left, but were outscored 34-11 the rest of the way.  An 18-4 Eagle run cut the margin to 67-61 with six minutes left, but the Yotes looked to have stemmed the tide with a Kayla Brewer jumper with four minutes left at 74-63.  Unfortunately, Northwest had one more rally, as Travis canned the triple from the right wing to give the Eagles the lead for good.  The loss for the Yotes spoiled a double-double from Magen Dufurrena, who had a career-high 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Whitney Clark added 14 points and Brewer 13.  Travis led Northwest, who came into the night in last place in the league standings, with 27 points, including seven three pointers.

EASTERN COMPLETES SEASON SWEEP OF C OF I: Sheena Henderson and Tiffanie Ulmer combined for 54 points and 24 rebounds, as then No. 23 ranked Eastern Oregon completed a season sweep of The C of I, stopping the Lady Yotes 82-73 in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center on Tuesday night.  After a see-saw first 30 minutes, the Mountaineers grabbed a 62-54 lead with 9:32 left on a Breana Olsen jump shot.  However, The C of I fought back, cutting the margin to 62-61 on a Whitney Clark three with 7:29 on the clock.  EOU would then hold the Yotes without a field goal for a four minute stretch, using three Henderson buckets to build the margin to 72-62 and cruised to the win.  Henderson had a season-high 31 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the floor, while Ulmer had 23 points and 15 rebounds, going 15-for-17 from the free throw line.  Eastern had double the foul shot attempts than the Lady Yotes (16-10, 13-6), making 37-of-41 for the night.  The C of I was led by Clark, who scored 22 points, with ShaNae Horner (West Jordan, Utah / Snow CC) netting 17 points off the bench.  However, rebounding was key, as EOU held a commanding 50-26 edge on the glass.

CALIFORNIA CALLS THE YOTES: For the first time in four years, the Coyotes are set to travel to California for games during Break Week on The C of I campus.  In 2004, the Yotes played a four-game series at San Francisco State, with the following year, The C of I had their entire Southern California trip washed out by rain.  The weather forecast is not promising this year either, as after a cloudy day on Wednesday, rain is expected the rest of the week in the Bay Area.

ABOUT SONOMA STATE: The Yotes open up their trip with a doubleheader against Sonoma State, one of the top NCAA Division II teams on the West Coast.  The Seawolves (9-1) are the defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champions and are coming off a 50-12 season in which they advanced to the Regional Tournament.  SSU’s potent offensive attack is led by outfielders Mark Pestorich (.556 6 RBI) and Kyle Jones (.406 3 HR 13 RBI), along with catcher Trevor Howell (.391 3 HR 12 RBI), while their pitching staff is led by lefties Matt Means (2-0 0.00 ERA in 14 IP) and Rashad Tucker (2-0 0.87 ERA in 10 IP).  It is the first meeting between the two teams.

ABOUT PATTEN: The C of I will play the final three games of their trip against NAIA Region II independent, Patten University.  The Lions (2-15) are coming off their first ever appearance in the Region II Tournament, losing both playoff games by just one run.  The 2008 team is led by outfielder DeJuan Johnson (.390 1 HR 8 RBI) and first baseman Joey Jennings (.200 2 HR 6 RBI), with their pitching staff anchored by right-hander James Doss (1-2 4.03 ERA in 29 IP).  It is the first-ever meetings between the two teams.

ZUBY SOLID AGAINST MAYVILLE: Left-hander Joey Zubizarreta (Boise, Idaho / Cochise CC) is off to a solid start in 2008, recording his second-straight good outing in Lewiston.  The senior went five innings of four-hit ball, allowing just one run with a career-high seven punchouts in the 10-4 win over Mayville State.  Zuby” has a 2.43 ERA in his two appearances this season, with opponents hitting just .241 against him.

BROCK, M-Q SHUT DOWN L-C: Hitting their spots and playing good defense the key to defeating Lewis-Clark State, and that is what the Yotes did on Sunday.  The C of I did not commit an error in the ten inning game, with pitchers Andrew Brock (Burnaby, B.C. / Douglas CC) and Justin Marsh-Quinlan (Seabeck, Wash. / Olympic CC) keeping the Warriors off balance.  Brock allowed two runs on eight hits without a walk in seven innings of work, while Marsh-Quinlan allowed just two hits with two strikeouts in three innings of relief to notch the win.

LONG TIME BETWEEN WINS AGAINST WARRIORS: The win over L-C ended an 18-game losing streak to the defending NAIA champions.  The Yotes hadn’t reached the win column against their rivals since a 6-3 win during the 2006 season – with the Warriors winning 28-of-29 games, dating back to the 2003 season.  It also was the first extra innings win over L-C since 1999.

GOOD WEEKENDS WITH THE STICK: Three Coyotes had solid production at the plate over the weekend, led by transfer infielder Alex O’Brien (Everett, Wash. / Everett HS).  The junior went 5-for-12 with his first home run and three RBI while primarily playing shortstop during the tournament.  Also swinging a big stick was outfielder Cody Brubaker (Post Falls, Idaho / Spokane Falls CC), who went 5-for-14 with a homer and six RBI in the four games, with first baseman Richie Snider (Sandpoint, Idaho / Porterville CC) going 4-for-15, but recording two doubles, a homer, and five RBI.

RECAP OF MAYVILLE STATE GAMES: Mayville State 7, C of I 5 – The Yotes were their own worse enemy against the foe from North Dakota, stranding 15 runners in Friday’s loss.  After falling behind 4-0, The C of I chipped away, closing within 6-5 on a Cody Brubaker two-run homer in the eighth, then got a Brad Carlsen one-out double to put the tying run in scoring position.  However, Luke Howarth (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) struck out and after a plunking of Ray Morrison (Cumming, Ga. / Chattahoochee Valley CC), Jacob Garsez (Caldwell, Idaho / Columbia Basin CC) flew out to center to end the threat.  Jason Barry (Castlegar, B.C. / U. of Northern Iowa) allowed four earned runs in five innings of work to get the loss.  C of I 10, Mayville State 4 - Joey Zubizarreta struck out a career high seven men in five innings of work, as The C of I ended a three-game losing streak with a 10-4 victory over Mayville State on Saturday morning.  The Yotes offense rallied from a 1-0 deficit, tying the game in the second on a Dane McGrady (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) bases loaded walk, then taking the lead for good on a Morrison RBI single in the third.  It was followed by a three-run Alex O'Brien home run, as The C of I jumped out to an 8-1 lead and coasted to the win.  Five different Coyotes had multi-hit games - with Brubaker and Richie Snider each going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while O'Brien, Morrison, and Howarth all had two hits.

RECAP OF L-C STATE GAMES: L-C State 8, C of I 3 – The Yotes were able to pull even with the No. 1 ranked Warriors, but the bullpen could not keep L-C at bay in the loss.  Trailing 3-0, Richie Snider hit a solo homer in the fourth to get The C of I on the board, the added a two-run double in the top of the sixth to tie the score.  However, reliever Chris Larsen (Vancouver, Wash. / Everett CC) allowed a three-run Brett Wyatt homer in the bottom of the frame, along with a two-run Ikaika Lester shot in the eighth, as the Warriors got the win.  Jake Bottari (Wells, Nev. / Western Nevada CC) went five innings of five hit ball, but got a no-decision.  C of I 3, L-C State 2 (10) - A pinch hit RBI fielders choice by Jordan Lanman scored Perry Hamilton from third base in the top of the tenth inning, as the Yotes defeated the top-ranked Warriors.  With one out in the tenth, Hamilton looped a fly ball to right that was dropped by Chris Valencia - giving the Yotes the go-ahead run in scoring position.  Luke Howarth laced the next pitch into right field for a base hit to put runners on the corners, with Lanman hitting a slow roller to shortstop - beating out the chance for a double play to give The C of I the lead.  L-C got on the board in the third on a Ricky Reavis sacrifice fly, but the Coyotes took the lead in the sixth inning, as Cody Brubaker ripped a two-out, two-run single into center.  The Warriors got even in the seventh on a Travis Georgious RBI single and nearly won it in the ninth, but a diving catch on a Mike Rivera line drive with the winning run aboard by Howarth ended the threat.  Howarth and Alex O'Brien each had two hits for the Yotes, while Kyle Greene had two hits for L-C.

SOFTBALL: Lady Yotes win final three games of California trip, set for twinbills with NW Nazarene and Utah Valley

LAST WEEK: at Priscilla Benham Classic, Livermore, Calif. – vs. Corban (L 2-1), vs. Holy Names (L 4-3), vs. Dominican (W 6-0), vs. Northwest Christian (W 6-0), vs. George Fox (W 7-1)

COMING UP: at Northwest Nazarene (DH), Tuesday, 2 p.m.; at Utah Valley (DH), Saturday (3/1), Noon.

YOTES FINALLY GET OUTSIDE: After battling the harsh 2008 winter in the Treasure Valley, the Coyote softball team had their first opportunity to face live pitching, take ground balls on a dirt infield, and face an opponent, as they traveled to the Bay Area for the Priscilla Benham Classic.  The C of I struggled with their bats early in the tournament, recording just three hits in an opening loss to Corban, but battled back – registering at least nine hits in the final four games of the classic.  The Yotes played pretty good defense, averaging one error per game – but had three errorless games during the tourney.

PLAYING ON SLOWPITCH FENCES: Last season, the Lady Yotes set a school record with 31 home runs on the season and showed tons of power over the weekend at the Benham Classic.  The problem was – the Yotes were playing on a field built for men’s league softball, as fences were at 300 feet around the diamond, instead of the standard 200 feet for women’s fastpitch softball.  According to head coach Al Mendiola, The C of I hit ten balls that would have been home runs on a normal field – but had just two inside the park longballs to show for it.  The team did have three triples on the weekend – which is nearly half the total the Yotes recorded last season in 49 games.

ZILLNER SETS “K” RECORD: No. 1 starter Katie Zillner (Emmett, Idaho / Chicago State U.) showed no rust after a fabulous volleyball season, as she began 2008 right where she left off last year.  The senior allowed just four hits in the loss to Corban on Friday, then came back Monday to strike out a school record 16 batters in the 6-0 blanking of Northwest Christian – breaking her own mark of 15 K’s.  Zillner has struck out ten-or-more batters in a game 16 times, while upping her career strike out record to 373.

QUALITY TOURNEY BY ARMS: The young arms on the Coyote staff also impressed in California.  Brooke Judy (Kuna, Idaho / Kuna HS) had a career-high 11 strikeouts in the loss to Holy Names and had 16 strikeouts to just one walk for the weekend.  Also pitching well was Chelsey Nokleby (Olympia, Wash. / River Ridge HS) and Donnae Carrell (Caldwell, Idaho / Middleton HS), who combined to pitch nine innings without allowing an earned run.  For the tournament, Coyote pitchers combined for a 0.88 ERA with just eight walks against 47 strikeouts.

SMITH, BUTCHER PICK UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF: The two hottest bats from the end of the 2007 season began 2008 on the same streak – as Stacy Smith (Draper, Utah / Juan Diego HS) and Haley Butcher (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) had big weekends in California.  Smith went 8-for-17 with four doubles, a triple, and four RBI, while Butcher went 6-for-14 with three doubles, an inside the park home run, and three RBI.

LOCAL OPENER AT NNU: Weather permitting, the Lady Yotes will open up their local season next Tuesday, meeting Northwest Nazarene  for a doubleheader in Nampa.  The Crusaders (0-4) opened the season with a pair of losses to both Concordia-Irvine and Dixie State – playing both opening day games close, while getting routed by both teams on Day 2.  NNU is led by outfielder Jael Henthorn (.250 2 RBI), second- baseman Vanessa Shaw (.222 1 RBI) and shortstop Haley Havern (.333 1 HR 2 RBI), while their top pitcher is returner Rachel Bare (0-2 17.28 ERA).  The two teams have met 32 times since 2002, with the Lady Yotes holding a commanding 25-7 series edge against their NCAA Division II counterparts.

FIRST OF THREE TWINBILLS WITH D-I’S: The Lady Yotes head out on a quick road trip next Saturday, heading to Orem, Utah for a date with NCAA Division I independent, Utah Valley.  The Wolverines (2-3) are much improved, notching early season wins over Rhode Island and Idaho State, while losing one-run games to Northern Colorado, Loyola Marymount, and Wisconsin.  UVU is led offensively by Megan Woodworth (.438 1 HR 6 RBI), while their pitching staff is led by Alli Bramwell (2-1 2.67 ERA).  The two teams have met nine previous times, with Utah Valley holding the all-time series lead, 8-1.

PRESEASON RANKINGS: For the first time, the Lady Yotes were ranked in the NAIA Preseason Top-25 Coaches Poll, earning the No. 14 spot in the voting – the same spot The C of I ended the 2007 season.  The squad was also the unanimous pick by the Cascade Conference coaches to win the league title in 2008.

RECAP OF BENHAM CLASSIC: Corban 2, C of I 1 – The Yotes managed just three hits in the loss to their CCC rivals.  Stephanie Stover (Caldwell, Idaho / U. of Nevada) had a first inning RBI single, plating Nicole Antonoplos (Boise, Idaho / Idaho State U.), who led off the game with a double.  However, it was the only run The C of I would score, as the Lady Yotes wasted a four-hit, nine strikeout performance by Katie ZIllner.  Holy Names 4, C of I 3 – A two-out, two-run single by Elise Foster in the fifth inning gave the Hawks the upset win over the Yotes.  The C of I got an RBI triple from Katy Luetke (Yreka, Calif. / Mendocino CC) and an RBI single from Kalie Kurdy (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) in the second to take a 2-1 lead, but could not hold on.  Two of the four runs allowed by the Yotes were unearned.  C of I 6, Dominican 0 – Chelsey Nokleby and Donnae Carrell combined on a five-hit shutout as the Lady Yotes picked up their first win of 2008.  Stacy Smith became the sixth Lady Yote to record four hits in a game, as she went 4-for-4 with three RBI, while both Antonoplos and Stover each had two hits.  C of I 6, Northwest Christian 0 – Katie Zillner struck out 16 batters and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in the victory over the Beacons.  Kurdy had an inside the park home run leading off the third inning, while Stacy Smith and Haley Butcher had back-to-back RBI doubles in the fifth inning.  C of I 7, George Fox 1 – Butcher had a two-run inside the park home run, with Dani Villyard (Kent, Wash. / Kentlake HS) going 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI in the victory.

ABOUT THE COACH: Al Mendiola is in his third year as head coach of The College of Idaho softball program and has a 58-39 all-time record.  The native of San Diego, Calif. has helped the Lady Yotes become a force in Northwest softball, leading The C of I to back-to-back playoff appearances, including the 2007 Cascade Conference championship.  Following the season, Mendiola was honored as CCC and NAIA Region I Coach of the Year after the Coyotes set a school record with 37 wins, climbing to as high as No. 14 in the NAIA poll, an advanced to the regional title game.  Outside of softball, Mendiola has also been the head coach of the Caldwell Silver Streaks American Legion baseball team since 1997 and has also assisted with the Boise Clippers men's fastpitch team.  He was also an assistant coach for The C of I baseball team for seven years.  A 1994 graduate of The C of I, Mendiola played two seasons of baseball for head coach Tim Mooney, earning honorable mention NAIA All-America honors as a senior.

HELM, HOPPER LEAD WAY AT HUSKY OPEN: The Coyote track team had a small, but powerful contingent at Sunday’s Husky Open, hosted by the University of Washington, inside the Dempsey Indoor Track.  Leading the way was freshman phenom, Stephanie Helm (Challis, Idaho / Challis HS), who crushed the school record in the 3,000-meters, placing fifth in the event in 10:08.97.  The time by Helm was 20-seconds faster than her previous best and 16-seconds faster than the school record.  More importantly, the time was the third-fastest 3,000-meters run in the NAIA this season.  Also receiving high marks was Tyler Hopper (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS), who won the title in the men’s 1,000-meters.  Hopper ran the race in 2:30.88 – improving his NAIA “A” qualifying mark in the event.  The senior also met the NAIA “B” mark in his 3,000-meter race later in the day.

CHLEBECK, BALL EARN “A” MARKS IN SEATTLE: The Yotes got two other quality races in Seattle, as both Jesse Chlebeck (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan HS) and Katie Ball (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS) each hit the NAIA automatic times in their races.  Chlebeck ran a personal-best 8:43.83 in the 3,000-meters, qualifying for an indoor national championship as an individual for the second time (he competed in the 5,000-meters during the 2006 Championships).  Ball broke her own school record in the indoor mile, meeting the “A” mark in 5:14.32 – finishing sixth out of 29 runners competing.

HARDY, MILLER MEET PROVISIONALS AT BSU MEET: The success for the Coyotes was not limited to Sunday’s meet in Seattle, but two other NAIA “B” marks were met at the Boise State Team Meet in Nampa.  Sam Hardy (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) bounced back from a tough cross country season to register his fastest mile indoors in 4:22.73 – placing fourth out of ten NCAA Division I runners.  Also hitting the “B” mark was Maggie Miller (Anchorage, Alaska / Lane CC), who ran a 2:20.77 in the 800-meters, a personal indoor best.
