ATHLETIC NEWS: Updates from earlier in the week

MEN’S BASKETBALL SEASON OVER: Coyotes drop hard-fought 74-68 playoff game at Oregon Tech on Wednesday night.  The C of I trailed just 69-68 inside the final minute, but a late trey by OIT sealed the win for the Owls.  The Yotes end their season 13-18.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL WINS, HOSTS OIT: Whitney Clark (Jerome, Idaho / Northwest Nazarene U.) scored a career high 33 points, lifting the Lady Yote basketball team to a 78-75 Cascade Conference quarterfinal win over Evergreen State.  With the win, coupled by an Eastern Oregon loss, gives The C of I a semifinal home game against Oregon Tech on Friday.  The game will be at 4 p.m. – between sessions of the IDHSAA 4A State Basketball Tournament, being hosted in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  Tickets will go on sale around 3:30 p.m. – with all seating general admission ($6.00 for adults, $4.00 for students – no passes or senior tickets).

SOFTBALL WINS AT NNU: Katie Zillner (Emmett, Idaho / Chicago State U.) tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out 11, helping the Lady Yote softball team to a 2-0 and 9-4 doubleheader sweep of Northwest Nazarene on Tuesday.  The Yotes are now 27-7 all time against their Canyon County rivals.

VOLLEYBALL SIGNS GRIBBLE: College of Idaho volleyball coach Liz Mendiola announced today the signing of incoming freshman Bryanne Gribble to an NAIA Letter of Intent for the 2008 season.  Gribble was an All-Southern Idaho Conference selection last fall at Bishop Kelly High in Boise, where she maintains a 4.0 grade point average.  She was the recipient of the Wendy's High School Heisman award, along with the National Fellowship of Christian Athletes All-American Scholar-Athlete Award.  She also plays basketball and softball at BKHS, earning All-SIC honors in softball.  Gribble's older sister, Angie, was a four-year letterwinner in both basketball and softball at The C of I from 2003-06.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Yotes open Cascade Conference Tournament on the road at No. 4 Oregon Tech

COMING UP: Cascade Conference Tournament quarterfinal – at No. 4 Oregon Tech, Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. (PST); with win, CCC Tournament semifinal, Saturday, vs. TBA

LAST WEEK: vs. Northwest Christian (W 74-61)

LIVE STATS: Live Stats of the Oregon Tech-C of I playoff game Wednesday night will be available via the OIT athletic website at http://140.211.130.21/LIVEmbk/xlive.htm.

A MAINSTAY IN THE PLAYOFFS: This season, the Yotes secured their 11th-striaght postseason berth in the Cascade Conference Tournament and their 26th playoff appearance in the last 27 years.  Outside of the 1996-97 season, the Coyotes have played in the postseason every year in the Marty Holly-Mark Owen era.  In the CCC Tourney, the Yotes have posted a 12-4 record under Owen, including tourney titles in 2001, 2003, and 2004.

YOTES POSTSEASON HISTORY: The Yotes have a rich history of playoff success in the last quarter century, winning six NAIA District titles (1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991) and three CCC titles (1993, 1996, 2004).  In program history, The C of I has appeared in the NAIA Tournament on 17 occasions, including last season, the most trips to the Big Dance than any other CCC school – including the 1996 NAIA Division II national championship.

OREGON TECH LOOKING TO TURN THE TIDE VS. C OF I: The two storied programs in the Cascade Conference meet again during the 2008 CCC Tournament, as the Coyotes open at Oregon Tech.  The Owls have been a mainstay in the NAIA Tournament lately, advancing to nine of the last 11 “Big Dances”, including their 2004 NAIA Division II national championship.  It marks the 13th time that the two teams have met during the postseason – with history heavily pointing toward the Coyotes.  The C of I holds a 9-3 all-time record against OIT in the playoffs – including winning district titles over the Owls in 1986, 1988, and 1989, and winning CCC titles in 2001 and 2004.  Even stranger is the fact that OIT has never defeated the Coyotes in the playoffs in Klamath Falls – as The C of I holds a 4-0 mark on the road against Tech.

HISTORY OF C OF I-OIT PLAYOFF GAMES:

1982:  OIT 65, at C of I 61 (District II quarters)     1994:  at C of I 82, OIT 74 (CCC quarters)

1983:  at C of I 94, OIT 76 (District II quarters)     1999:  OIT 72, at C of I 65 (CCC semis)

1986:  C of I 67, at OIT 63 (District II finals)         2000:  OIT 78, at C of I 77 (CCC semis)

1988:  C of I 71, at OIT 69 (District II finals)         2001:  C of I 75, at OIT 61 (CCC finals)

1989:  at C of I 80, OIT 66 (District II finals)         2004:  at C of I 62, OIT 46 (CCC finals)

1991:  at C of I 95, OIT 75 (District II quarters)     2005:  C of I 66, at OIT 62 (CCC semis)

ABOUT THE 2008 OWLS: OIT (25-5) looks to drop from their No. 4 perch in last week’s NAIA poll after losing a tough 71-67 decision to Concordia at home last Friday.  However, the Owls are as potent of a team in the league, led by CCC Player of the Year candidate, Ryan Fiegi (19.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 5.5 apg) – who poses a match-up problem as a 6-7 point-guard.  Forward Josh Wetzler (10.7 ppg, 8.4 rpg) doesn’t miss from the floor, connecting on 72-percent of his field goal attempts, while guard Jguwon Hogges (10.6 ppg, 3.6 rpg) is a threat from anywhere on the court.  Tech averages 86 points a game – though of the five games OIT was held below 74 points this season, two were against the Coyotes (an OIT 73-68 win in Caldwell in November and a 56-47 OIT win in Klamath Falls earlier in the month).  It marks the 66th meeting between the teams, dating back to 1962, with the Yotes holding a 39-26 all-time series edge.

OTHER CCC TOURNAMENT MATCH-UPS: Eastern Oregon claimed the regular-season championship, their first in 37 years, and one of the two automatic berths to the NAIA Division II national tournament.  No. 1 seeded EOU will host No. 8 seed Northwest Christian, with No. 3 Evergreen State hosting No. 6 Northwest, and No. 4 Warner Pacific hosting No. 5 Concordia.  The tournament is re-seeded after each round, with the highest remaining seed hosting the lowest remaining seed and the second-highest remaining seed hosting the second-lowest remaining seed.  The title game will be hosted by the highest remaining seed – with the winner earning the CCC’s second automatic berth to the NAIA Tournament.

CHAMP IS TOPS IN THE NATION: As the regular season came to a close, guard Bryan Champ (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) remains in the No. 1 spot among all NAIA Division II players in steals per game (3.3) and overall steals (99) for the fifth-straight week.  The junior also climbed to No. 3 on the all-time steals list with 182, while his 99 steals this season ranks No. 3 on the season record list.  Former assistant, Joe Green, holds the top two spots on the list (116 and 107).  Champ has recorded a steal in 27-straight games this season, while recording three or more steals in 13 of his last 15 games.

OWEN RECORDS A COYOTE FIRST: With five assists in the victory on Friday night against Northwest Christian, guard Josh Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallviue HS) became the first C of I player in program history to record 1,500 points, 300 assists, and 150 steals in a career.  The senior has now scored 1,547 points, has 300 assists, and 158 steals.  Owen now sits 90 points behind No. 3 Kade Wilson (1,637 points) for No. 3 on the all-time scoring list.  Taft Jackson (2,336 points) and R.C. Owens (2,155 points) hold down the top two spots on the list.

CAREER RECORD BOOK: The Coyote career record book continues to shuffle each week, as a pair of Yotes continue their assault on history.  Josh Owen ranks in the Top-10 in eleven categories – including No. 2 in career three-pointers made (273) and attempted (692 – just seven away from the school record), along with field goal attempts (1,199). He is fourth in points scored (1,547) and field goals made (507), sixth in steals (158), is seventh in assists (300), games played (117), and free throw percentage (.844), is No. 8 in free throws made (270), and is ninth in free throw attempts (320).  Also on the list is junior Bryan Champ, who is No. 3 in career steals (182).  Both Owen and Champ have cracked the single-season list as well – Owen eighth with both 88 three-pointers made 222 three-point attempts, while Champ is third in single-season steals with 99.

FINAL CCC TOP-SIX:  The final CCC Top-6 Coaches Poll of the 2007-08 season was released on Monday – as regular-season champion Eastern Oregon reclaimed the top spot.  Oregon Tech fell to No. 2, followed by Evergreen State, Warner Pacific, Concordia, and Northwest.  Oregon Tech was ranked No. 4 and Eastern Oregon No. 9 in last week’s latest NAIA Top-25 poll, while Evergreen State and Warner Pacific received votes.  The C of I will have a streak of 15 consecutive years of Top-25 rankings snapped when the final poll is released on Wednesday – however, the Yotes received votes in the poll twice this season – keeping the string of votes in a poll alive at 16 seasons.

FINAL LEAGUE ONLY STATISTICS: As the 20-game CCC season has come to a close, the Coyotes finished the year ranked second in four different team categories in league-only counters – scoring defense (69.5), steals per game (8.6), turnover margin (+3.6), and three-pointers made per game (8.8).  Individually, Josh Owen led the league in three-pointers made per game (3.8) and minutes played per game (37.4), while ranking No. 4 in scoring average (20.5). Bryan Champ led the loop in steals per game (3.5).

COYOTES CLOSE OUT HOME SCHEDULE WITH WIN ON SENIOR NIGHT: All five C of I starters scored in double figures, as the Coyotes ended a three-game losing streak by closing out the regular-season with a 74-61 victory over Northwest Christian in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center on Friday night.  Leading 20-17 at the after-eight minute media timeout, the Coyotes held the Beacons to just one field goal over the next seven minutes, using a 16-3 run to build a 16-point lead and took a 36-23 lead to the locker room.  The C of I kept NCC at bay in the second half, connecting on 7-of-13 shots from outside the arc to complete the season sweep of the first-year CCC school.  Steffen Spinks (Manteca, Calif. / East Union HS) led the Yotes with 16 points, with Bryan Champ scoring 14 and Kurt Nielson (Rexburg, Idaho / Eastern Utah CC) 13.  Seniors Josh Owen and J.R. Maggard (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) also netted double figures on Senior Night, as they made their final appearance in front of the home crowd.  Owen had 15 points and five assists, while Maggard had ten points and five rebounds.  The Beacons, who clinched the No. 8 seed in the CCC Tournament despite the loss, got 17 points from Jordan Whittenberg and 16 points from Josh Jarrett.  Despite making 50-percent of their field goal attempts, NCC was done in by 21 turnovers.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Lady Yotes open up CCC Tournament at home vs. Evergreen State

COMING UP: Cascade Conference Tournament quarterfinals – vs. Evergreen State, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.

LAST WEEK: vs. Northwest Christian (W 67-63)

LIVE STATS AVAILABLE: There will be no internet broadcast of Tuesday’s playoff game vs. Evergreen State, however, Live Stats of the contest will be available, thanks to the NAIA’s contract with DakStats.  To access the Live Stats, head to http://www.dakstats.com/Websync/Pages/WebcastPlayByPlay/WebcastPBP.aspx?association=10&sg=WBB&compID=76559&sea=undefined

LADY YOTES IN THE PLAYOFFS: The C of I has now advanced to the postseason in 12 of the 13 seasons since women’s basketball was reinstated at the College in 1995.  The Coyotes have advanced to three NAIA Division II national tournaments (1998 – first round, 2000 – quarterfinals, 2001 – championship game), but have never won a CCC Tournament title (advanced to the finals in 2000, 2002, and 2005).   The Lady Yotes have hosted a postseason game three of the last four seasons and has a 5-1 all-time record at home during the payoffs.

GAME TIME MOVED BACK 30 MINUTES: Unlike previously released, the CCC Tournament quarterfinal against Evergreen State will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.  The Yotes had originally had the game scheduled for 7 p.m., however, the CCC protocol mandates all start times be at a uniform 7:30 p.m. mark.

PLAYOFF GAME INFORMATION: Tickets for Tuesday’s CCC Tournament game will not go on sale prior to the day of the game.  Gates will open at 6 p.m. on game day, with admission prices set at $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for students (5-to-17) – as all tickets will be general admission.  No passes will be issued, except for those with NAIA Championship passes.

ABOUT EVERGREEN: The Geoducks (9-20) will be making their fourth appearance in the CCC Tournament in the last five seasons, and their seventh playoff appearance overall.  E-State competed their first season as a member of the Pacific West Conference (NCAA Division II), qualifying for the playoffs in 1998, then made the playoffs in 1999 and 2000 as NAIA independents.  They are still looking for their first-ever playoff win – having gone 0-7 in postseason games.  The 2008 squad earned the No. 6 seed by winning a tiebreaker with Northwest Christian – by virtue of their 3-7 record against CCC teams with a .500 or better mark.  All-CCC candidate Jennifer Solberg (14.7 ppg, 9.5 rpg) leads the squad in scoring, while Kristi Auckland (11.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg) and Rosiland Lee (9.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg) provide punch in the paint.  The two teams split the season series this year, the Lady Yotes winning in Caldwell, 82-60, in January, with the Geoducks winning, 79-71, two weeks ago in Olympia, Wash.  The C of I holds the all-time series edge, 19-3.

IN THE PLAYOFFS VS. EVERGREEN: It is the second time that the Coyotes and Geoducks have met in the postseason – as the two teams met in the 2005 quarterfinals.  That game saw the Lady Yotes hold Evergreen to just 26-percent shooting from the field, as Kasey Hooter had a game-high 19 points and 15 rebounds in a C of I 62-46 victory.

OTHER PLAYOFF MATCH-UPS: Eastern Oregon took home the top-spot in the CCC Tournament and one of the two automatic berths to the NAIA Tournament, and will open up the playoffs at home against No. 8 seeded Cascade – who is making their first postseason appearance since 2003.  No. 2 seeded Southern Oregon hosts No. 7 Northwest Christian, and No. 4 seeded Oregon Tech hosts No. 5 seeded Concordia.  The bracket is re-seeded after the quarterfinals, as the highest remaining seed will host the lowest remaining seed, and the next-highest remaining seed hosts the next-lowest remaining seed.  The title game will be hosted by the highest remaining seed in the tournament.

80 POINTS A NIGHT EQUALS WINS: When scoring at least 80 points in a game this season, the Lady Yotes have a perfect record, going 8-0 when hitting the magic number.  However, the club is 7-5 when scoring 70-79 points, and have a 2-5 record when failing to reach the 70 point plateau.  The C of I has a chance to break the school record for scoring average, as they take a 74.3 points per game mark into the postseason, with the all-time mark at 73.4 set in 1997-98.

CAREER RECORD BOOK: Four players have found their way in The C of I career record book during the 2007-08 season.  Whitney Clark (Jerome, Idaho / Northwest Nazarene U.) is amongst the leaders in 11 different categories – No. 3 in three-pointers made (144), free throws made (306), field goals attempted (986), and three-pointers attempted (449), No. 4 in points scored (1,211) and free throw attempts (399), No. 5 in field goals made (378) and free throw percentage (.767), No. 6 in steals (141) and games started (66), No. 10 in assists (184), and No. 11 in games played (86).  Denise Hill (Eugene, Ore. / Boise State U.) is No. 8 in free throws made (158), No. 10 in free throw attempts (231), while ranking No. 5 in field goal percentage (.484).  Rounding out the group are Christon Vander Esch (Riggins, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC), who is No. 2 in blocked shots (85) and No. 5 in steals (143), and Magen Dufurrena (Denio, Nev. / Lowry HS), who is No. 12 in steals (114).  Vander Esch also ranks No. 3 on the single-season steals list (80) and blocks list (53), while Clark is No. 5 in free throws made in a season (106) and No. 9 in field goals attempted in a season.

CCC TOP-6: The final CCC Top-6 Coaches Poll was released on Monday, with Southern Oregon staking claim to the top spot for the third straight week.  Eastern Oregon remains at No. 2, followed by the Lady Yotes, Oregon Tech, Concordia, and Evergreen State.  Southern Oregon is now the lone team ranked in the Top-25 at No. 22, while Eastern Oregon is the first time listed in the “Others Receiving Votes” category.  The final national poll of the season will be released on Feb. 27, which will help base the at-large bids to the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.

FINAL CONFERENCE ONLY STATS: With the 20-game CCC season complete, the Lady Yotes finished the season leading the loop in conference counters in two categories – steals per game (15.2) and turnover margin (+9.1).  Individually, Christon Vander Esch led the loop in both steals per game (2.9) and blocked shots per game (2.1).

LADY YOTES RALLY TO STOP NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN: The C of I rallied from a late six-point deficit, as the Lady Yotes clinched the No. 3 seed in the CCC Tournament with a 67-63 victory over Northwest Christian, Friday night in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  The Coyotes trailed 50-44 with seven minutes remaining after an Elise Gray triple gave the visiting Beacons their largest lead of the night.  However, The C of I battled back, getting a bank-shot three-pointer from ShaNae Horner (West Jordan, Utah / Snow CC) with four minutes left to regain the lead at 54-53, and a trey from Whitney Clark a minute later gave the hosts the lead for good.  The C of I secured the win by connecting on ten straight free throws inside the final minute, making 23-of-28 shots from the line on the night.  Christon Vander Esch had 20 points, six rebounds, and four blocked shots in the win, with Clark adding 16 points.  Gray and Jenneca Crocker each had 14 points in the loss for the Beacons (14-15, 8-11).  The game marked the final regular-season home game for four seniors - Clark, Magen Dufurrena, Denise Hill, and Liz Mortensen (San Diego, Calif. / Horizon HS).

BASEBALL: Yotes set to open Region I play at home vs. Oregon Tech after rain forces C of I home from California

LAST WEEK: at Sonoma State (L 8-5, L 14-1), three-game series at Patten rained out

COMING UP: vs. Oregon Tech (DH), Saturday, Noon; vs. Oregon Tech (DH), Sunday, 11 a.m.

LIVE STATS / TAPE DELAYED INTERNET BROADCASTS: All home College of Idaho baseball games will have Live Stats available, thanks to the NAIA’s contract with DakStats.  To access the live stats, head to http://www.dakstats.com/WebSync/Pages/Team/TeamPage.aspx?association=10&sg=MBA&sea=NAIMBA_2008&team=1612, and click on the corresponding webcast “W” next to the game being played.  No live internet broadcasts are currently planned this weekend, however, although an archived broadcast of the weekend games will available during the evening following each game.

YOTES SET TO OPEN UP HOME SCHEDULE: After having their four-game series with Whitworth at Simplot Stadium earlier this month snowed out, The College of Idaho baseball team will finally open up the home schedule on Saturday.  The Coyotes will play the bulk of their home schedule in the next three weeks – as The C of I will play 13 of their next 16 games on their home diamond, including the next 11 contests in a row.

LOOKING AT THE REGION: Saturday opens up play for the NAIA Region I scheduling pool – the final season of play in the current format.  Next season, the NAIA moves from regional qualifying to a conference-direct model, eliminating the current NAIA Region I.  The six teams in the Region I – British Columbia, C of I, Concordia, Corban, Lewis-Clark State, and Oregon Tech, will have to compete as independents and advance to the postseason through a national independent tournament.  In other Region I action this weekend, UBC will play a three-game series at Corban.

ABOUT OREGON TECH: First-year head coach Matt Miles brings Oregon Tech to Caldwell after a two-week break in between games.  The Owls (1-7) opened the season with four losses in Southern California, dropped a twin bill to Cal State-Stanislaus, fell to Simpson, but picked up a 7-2 win over Northwest Nazarene.  Just as the Yotes had trouble practicing outside, so did OIT – who has had a foot of snow on the ground in Klamath Falls since December.  This has affected Tech’s defense, as OIT has recorded 15 errors in their eight games.  Offensively, Lee Eklund (.310 3 HR 6 RBI) has provided power in the line-up, while Dan Ordonez (.316 4 RBI) is a returning starter in the outfield.  Casey Burton (1-1 1.93 ERA) and Josh Strom (0-1 2.45 ERA) are a good 1-2 punch on the hill.  The Coyotes swept all seven games from OIT last season and hold a commanding 53-10 series lead, dating back to 1961.

RAIN WASHES AWAY GAMES: The view of the Bay Area for The C of I baseball team was the look outside their hotel windows last week, as the Coyotes had their three-game series at Patten postponed due to rain.  It marked the second-straight trip to California that the Yotes have lost games due to weather – as their 2005 trip to Los Angeles was washed out due to rain.

NO. 12 SONOMA STATE SWEEPS C OF I: The Yotes did beat the rain last Monday, as The C of I dropped a doubleheader at NCAA Division II No. 12 ranked Sonoma State, dropping the opener 8-5 and the night cap 14-1.  Game 1 saw the Yotes jump out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame on a Cody Brubaker (Post Falls, Idaho / Spokane Falls CC) RBI double, but SSU used a five-run fourth inning, capped by a two-run homer by Chris Cook, to take an 8-1 lead.  The Coyotes would draw within three on a Brad Carlsen (Reno, Nev. / Western Nevada CC) three-run homer, but could not get closer.  Game 2 was all Sonoma State, as the Seawolves scored six times in the first inning to record the rout.  Casey Theime had a pair of three-run home runs in the win.  The Yotes got an RBI double from Carlsen in the ninth - but managed just three hits all game against three SSU pitchers.

HITTING LEADERS THROUGH GAME 10: Newcomers are dominating the Coyote offensive categories ten games into the season, as four different first-year players have a .300 batting average with more than 20 at bats.  Freshman Ray Morrison is hitting .375 with three RBI at first base, while fellow freshman catcher Jordan Lanman (La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS) is hitting .306 with four doubles and four RBI.  Transfers Cody Brubaker and Brad Carlsen have also be key to the Yotes success, as Brubaker is hitting .371 with four doubles and ten RBI, with Carlsen hitting .343 with four doubles, two homers, and 13 RBI.  Both players have also walked eight times, with Brubaker hitting .455 against left-handed pitching, and Carlsen 7-for-8 this season with a runner at third base and less than two outs.

PITCHING LEADERS THROUGH GAME 10: On the mound, the top-two returners for the Yotes have been the key so far this season.  Andrew Brock (Burnaby, B.C. / Douglas CC) has allowed just two earned runs in 12 innings of work, striking out seven batters without a walk, with Joey Zubizarreta (Boise, Idaho / Cochise CC) allowing just three earned runs in ten innings pitched, tied for the team lead with ten strikeouts.  Unfortunately, with six of their ten games against teams in the Top-15 of their respective national polls, the Yotes team ERA is a bit inflated at 5.40.

ABOUT THE COACH: The 2008 season marks the 21st year in The College of Idaho baseball program for head coach Shawn Humberger, his eighth year as Coyote skipper.  Last season, he led the squad to a 31-17 mark, their third-straight Cascade Conference championship, and a runner-up finish at the NAIA Region I Tournament.  During his tenure, Humberger has compiled a 240-163-1 record, including a third-place finish at the 2002 NAIA College World Series.  He has been named CCC Baseball Coach of the Year in 2002, 2005, 2006. and 2007, along with earning NAIA Region I Coach-of-the-Year and CCC Men's Coach-of-the-Year for all sports in 2002.

SWIMMING: Ten Coyotes set to compete at NAIA Championships in San Antonio, Texas

LAST WEEK: Idle

COMING UP: at NAIA Championships, Wed-Sat., San Antonio, Texas.

GROUP OF TEN HEADS TO NAIA CHAMPIONSHIPS: The College of Idaho swim teams will compete this week at the NAIA National Championships, held at the Palo Alto Natatorium in San Antonio, Tex.  It is the 52nd Annual Men’s Championships and the 28th Annual Women’s Championships sponsored by the NAIA.  On the men’s side, the Yotes will take five competitors – Casey Walker (Caldwell, Idaho / Skyview HS), John Green (Pleasanton, Calif. / Foothill HS), Scott Mikelonis (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS), Blake Bower (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS), and Jeremy Younggren (Island City, Ore. / La Grande HS).  Of the group, Green, Mikelonis, and Younggren have competed in two previous national championships, while Bower will be making his second appearance.  The women’s team will also have five competitors – Alphonsina Savell (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS), Ellen Judd (Missoula, Mont. / Sentinel HS), Ashlee Byrnes (Vancouver, Wash. / Columbia River HS), Annie Kerrick (Lewiston, Idaho / Lewiston HS), and Annie Younggren (Island City, Ore. / La Grande HS).  Savell will be making her third-straight trip to Nationals, while Judd and Byrnes will be making their second-straight trip.  The competition list will be released by the NAIA on Wednesday afternoon, with preliminaries starting on Thursday morning.

HISTORY AT NATIONALS: After failing to send a contingent to Nationals during the 2005 season, the Coyotes have steadily improved as a team each of the last two seasons.  In 2006, the C of I men finished 11th overall, as the men’s 200-freestyle relay placed second in the consolation final.  Last year, both teams were in the Top-15, as the men finished tenth, and the Lady Yotes 15th.  John Green and Alphonsina Savell became the first C of I competitors to advance into the consolation finals, while the men’s 200-free relay team became the first Coyote squad to make the championship heat, placing sixth overall.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: Lady Yotes off to Lewiston after tough Hawaii trip

LAST WEEK: at Chaminade (L 6-3), at No. 1 BYU-Hawaii (L 9-0), at Chaminade (L 6-3)

COMING UP: at NAIA Region I Challenge, Lewiston – Saturday vs. Southern Oregon, Noon; vs. Alberta, 4 p.m.; Sunday vs. Lewis-Clark State, 1 p.m.

YOTES STRUGGLE IN HAWAII: Having to practice indoors due to the tough Treasure Valley winter, The College of Idaho tennis team had their problems with the elements during their season-opening trip to Hawaii – not rain, but wind and the 80-degree temperatures.  In the opener last Monday at Chaminade, head coach Cisco Limbago mentioned that sunburns for many members of the team limited the team, as the Lady Yotes managed just one singles victory against the Silverswords.  Freshman Molly Leadbetter (Grand Junction, Colo. / West River Academy) picked up the victory at No. 5 singles for the Yotes, winning her match, 6-1, 6-0.  Limbago felt his team played better against BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday, but the defending NCAA Division II champion Seasiders swept the match.  In Wednesday’s rematch with Chaminade, the Lady Yotes were much more competitive, but fell by an identical 6-3 score.  The C of I was in all three doubles matches – winning at least five games in each of the pro set matches, but could not notch a win.  The Lady Yotes did sweep the bottom of the ladder – getting wins at No. 4 by Kate Leadbetter (Grand Junction, Colo. / West River Academy), No. 5 by Amanda McEldowney (Caldwell, Idaho / Linfield Coll.), and No. 6 by Molly Leadbetter.

C OF I HEADS TO NAIA REGION I CHALLENGE: For the second-straight season, the NAIA Region I will not have a postseason tournament – so this weekend’s Region I Challenge in Lewiston is the lone opportunity for the Yotes to battle the three other teams in the Northwest.

ABOUT THE TEAMS: Southern Oregon comes into the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record and return their top player in the ladder in Katie Ross, who is perfect this season.  Alberta heads to Lewiston after a five-game tour of California – going 2-3, picking up wins over Biola and Hope International.  LC-State, the defending regional champ, is 2-1 this season, picking up wins against Whitman and Whitworth.

SKIING: Yotes head to USCSA National Championships

LAST WEEK: at USCSA Western Regional – Women 4th, Men 6th

COMING UP: USCSA National Championships, Sunday River, Maine – March 3-8.

LADY YOTES CONTINUE STRING OF NATIONAL BERTHS: Paced by an outstanding Saturday of slalom skiing, The College of Idaho women’s alpine team placed fourth at the 2008 USCSA Western Regional Championships at Brundage Mountain – extending their streak of national championship appearances to ten.  Lara Mann (Bedford, Mass. / The Hampton School) led the way with a sixth-place finish in the slalom, while Jessica Wise (Reno, Nev. / Wooster HS) and Nicki Maxwell (Belfry, Mont. / Red Lodge HS) both finished in the Top-25.  It was a better effort than the Lady Yotes had in Thursday’s giant slalom, as The C of I placed fourth in their opening day runs – without a skier in the Top-10.

MEN BATTLE TO EARN NATIONAL BID: It wasn’t easy for The C of I men’s alpine team, but the Yotes will head to Nationals again – thanks to a gutsy slalom day on Saturday.  Sitting one spot below the cut line after a seventh-place finish in the giant slalom, the Coyotes got quality runs by Dewey Moss (Jerome, Idaho / Oregon State U.), who placed eighth, and Eric Ostrand (Gilford, N.H. / Gilford HS), who was in 13th – using the fourth-place finish to end the weekend in sixth – but in fourth-place among USCSA teams.

WHO IS HEADED TO NATIONALS: On the men’s side, Rocky Mountain, Colorado Mountain, Colorado State, Air Force, and The C of I are headed to Maine, while Rocky, The C of I, British Columbia, Idaho, and Puget Sound will represent the women from the Western Region.

YOTES COMPLETE SIX-PEAT: The men’s and women’s ski team continued their dominance on the Northwest Collegiate Ski Conference, winning their sixth-straight team title with quality performances in a pair of make-up giant slalom qualifiers last Tuesday and Wednesday.  The Coyotes swept the individual awards as well - as Dewey Moss picked up his second-straight men's individual championship, while Lara Mann took the crown on the women's side.  Four other C of I men - Mats Boehnke (Carson City, Nev. / Carson HS, Matt Weaver (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora HS), Aaron Flynn (St. Paul, Minn. / Central HS), and Eric Ostrand, along with three other C of I women – Nicki Maxwell, Katie Kernan (Shelburne, N.H. / Gorham HS), and Jessica Wise, were on the All-NWCSC Team.

FINAL NWCSC INDIVIDUAL RESULTS: Men's: Dewey Moss (CI) 516, Matt Johnson (Washington) 318, Holden Sapp (Puget Sound) 267, Mats Boehnke (CI) 220, Brett Bullard (Idaho) 209, Todd Duncombe (Washington) 194, Matt Weaver (CI) 190, Yannick Berther (Washington), Aaron Flynn (CI), Eric Ostrand (CI); Women's: Lara Mann (CI) 481, Kristin Wick (Idaho) 300, Nicki Maxwell (CI) 285, Jessica Stewart (Idaho) 265, Kaylie Rozen (Puget Sound) 241, Katie Benjamin (British Columbia) 240, Katie Sewaya (British Columbia) 210, Katie Kernan (CI) 169, Taylor Cudahy (Oregon) 160, Jessica Wise (CI) 128.

OFF TO MAINE: The Coyotes will leave Sunday morning for Sunday River, Maine, joining teams from coast to coast at the USCSA Championships.  The C of I will compete in the alpine events, along with snowboard events – as the women’s snowboard team took home the Western Region title, thanks to a quality performance by Kaylie Aaker (Hailey, Idaho / Wood River HS).
