BASEBALL (15-16): Coyotes take weekend off to prepare
for midweek three-game series at No. 1 Lewis-Clark State
LAST WEEK: at British Columbia (L 3-0, W 8-6 (11), L 9-2,
L 10-4)
COMING UP: at No. 1 Lewis-Clark
State (DH), Tuesday, 4 p.m. (PT); at
No. 1 Lewis-Clark State, Wednesday, 2 p.m.
(PT)
INTERNET BROADCAST AVAILABLE AT
LC-STATE: All three
games of the Lewis-Clark State series will be carried live on radio in the Lewis-Clark Valley on 950 KOZE-AM with Mike Tatko and Brian Danner calling the play-by-play. The games will also be simulcast on the
internet on www.koze-sports.com.
YOTES SWEEP WEEKLY AWARDS: The C of I swept the weekly
baseball awards, as Brad Carlsen (Reno, Nev. / Western
Nevada CC) was named Player of the Week and Jake Bottari (Wells, Nev. / Western
Nevada CC) was named Pitcher of the Week, announced by the
Cascade Conference on Monday. Carlsen, who was also named NAIA Region I Player of the
Week, had at least one hit in all six C of I games over the week, hitting .389
with three RBI. He also scored four runs and had two stolen bases. Bottari did not allow
an earned run in three appearances during the week. The junior worked a
1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up a save in a 7-5 win over Simpson, worked a
scoreless inning in a 13-2 win over Simpson, then tossed three and a third
innings of relief, striking out three batters in the Yotes 8-6 extra inning win
over British Columbia.
REGIONAL/NATIONAL POLL: The NAIA Region I Coaches Poll
remained the same this week, as Lewis-Clark
State continues to sit in the No. 1
spot, followed by British Columbia
and the Coyotes. Rounding out the
balloting are Concordia, Corban, and Oregon
Tech. The latest NAIA Top-25 poll has Lewis-Clark State
in the top spot for the 25th-straight week, followed by Lubbock Christian, Lee,
Azusa Pacific, and Oklahoma City. The regional poll is released each Monday
afternoon, with the national poll released on Wednesday’s.
C OF I PROFESSIONAL UPDATE: As the 2008 professional baseball
season opened this week, the scenery for former Coyotes also changed. Former All-Americans Branden
Florence and Jason Roach found themselves without a contract, as Florence was released by
the Philadelphia Phillies and Roach released by the
Kansas City Royals – while former big-leaguer, Jason Simontacchi
was not offered a contract during Spring Training. The group will most
likely head to the independent leagues – with Florence looking to sign in the Atlantic
League, with Roach looking to sign in the Golden Baseball League. Also in the independent ranks is Matt
Zachary, who signed a contract in the
STANDINGS AT THE MIDWAY POINT: Halfway home in the 2008 season and
the Region I standings seem to see who is going to the playoffs and who is
not. British
Columbia, with a 10-1 record, has a commanding lead on the top
spot and right to host the regional tournament in May, while the Yotes and
Concordia are battling for the No. 3 spot – crucial to avoid playing Lewis-Clark State in the opening round. Both Corban and
Oregon Tech must have a hot second half to make a playoff run. Both The C of I and OIT have played all of
their games, while Corban must make up single games
against both UBC and Concordia.
WHO’S HOT FOR THE YOTES / WHO’S NOT:
In the last ten
games against NAIA Region I opponents, numbers for the Coyotes are good, and
bad. Leading the Yotes offensively is Alex O’Brien (Everett, Wash. / Everett CC), who is hitting .367 with nine RBI
during that stretch, with Jake Miller (Idaho Falls, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC) hitting
.333 with five RBI, and Pat Lyon (Bonners Ferry, Idaho / Bonners Ferry HS)
going 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his last three starts. On the flip side, both C of I catchers are
struggling, as Dane McGrady
(Boise,
Idaho / Borah HS) has just two hits in his
last 22 at bats, while Jordan Lanman (La Grande, Ore.
/ La Grande HS) is three for his last 15 in league play. On the mound, Joey Zubizarreta (Boise, Idaho / Cochise CC) is 0-3 with a 5.60
in his last three starts.
UPDATING THE RECORD BOOK: Three Coyotes have moved up the
ladder on the Yotes career record book list.
Dane McGrady is now No. 4 all-time in hit by
pitches (42), Joey Zubizarreta is No. 6 in
appearances (62), with Luke Howarth (Boise,
Idaho / Centennial HS) sitting in the No. 9 spot on the sacrifice hits (12)
category.
CAN ANYONE STOP THE L-C EXPRESS?: The Coyotes take the weekend off after midterm exams, preparing
themselves for a three-game series at Lewis-Clark State. The Warriors (28-2) have run roughshod over
opponents since the Yotes defeated them on Feb. 17, winning 22 games in a row, including
14 games against NAIA Region I teams.
L-C is led by Kyle Greene (.440 8 HR 38 RBI), Paul Martin (.389 2 HR 25
RBI) and Ikaika Lester (.383 3 HR 38 RBI) at the
plate, while Michael Guerrero (5-0 0.59 ERA, 2 ShO),
Blaine Hardy (5-1 2.08 ERA), and Matt Fitts (6-0 4.50
ERA) have dominated opponents on the hill.
The two teams have played seven times this season, with the Warriors
winning 6-of-7 games, and lead the all-time series, 118-40-1.
REGION I TEAM STATISTICS: Batting Average – Lewis-Clark State
.365, Concordia .288, British Columbia .285, College of Idaho .279, Corban .257, Oregon Tech .256; Earned Run Average – Lewis-Clark
State 2.99, British Columbia 4.22, Oregon Tech 4.68, College of Idaho 5.20, Corban 6.18, Concordia 6.48; Fielding Percentage – Lewis-Clark
State .967, Corban .958, Concordia .956, College of
Idaho .952, British Columbia .951, Oregon Tech .933.
RECAP OF CANADA SERIES: Saturday - The
C of I and British Columbia split an NAIA
Region I baseball doubleheader at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver, with the T-Birds winning the opener,
3-0, with the Yotes taking the nightcap in 11 innings, 8-6. Game 1 saw UBC starter Mark Hardy throw his
third shutout in regional play, scattering three hits and fanning four in the
seven inning game. His defense did not help him, committing five errors
in the field, however, the Coyotes could not get the
clutch hit - leaving the bases loaded in both the second and third innings,
along with two runners in scoring position in the seventh. Back-to-back
doubles from Mike Styrna and Scott Webster in the
fourth got the T-Birds on the board against C of I (15-14, 7-4) starter Pat
Lyon, then got a solo homer from Matt Chester in the fifth, and an RBI single
from Bob Foerester in the sixth to complete the
scoring. Game 2 was a see-saw affair, as
the two teams traded the lead throughout the first seven innings, as the
contest was tied 5-5 going into extra innings. The Coyotes would strike
first in the 11th, as they loaded the bases with no one out, with Gavin Gamboa (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) forcing
in a run with a hit by pitch, followed by an Alex O'Brien two-run single.
However, the rally was cut short by the fifth double play grounded into by The
C of I in the game. UBC got one back in
the bottom of the frame, but with the bases loaded and one out, Jason Barry (Castlegar, B.C. / U. of Northern Iowa) struck
out Beb Torrie and got Foerester to roll out to shortstop to end the game. Jake Miller had three hits in Game 2 for the
Yotes, with Luke Howarth and Cody Brubaker (Post Falls,
Idaho / Spokane Falls CC) each having two hits, while five different
T-Birds had two hits in the game. Sunday - Two big innings by UBC did The
C of I in this afternoon, as the T-Birds swept a
doubleheader from the Yotes, 9-2 and 10-4, at Nat Bailey Stadium. UBC used a six-run fourth inning to break a
2-2 tie to earn the win in Game 1, then used an eight-run second inning in Game
2 to complete the sweep In the opener,
the Yotes got on the board first, as a Miller RBI groundout scored Bryan Champ (Boise,
Idaho / Borah HS) from third in the opening frame. After the T-Birds
took the lead at 2-1, The C of I tied it in the third on a Dane McGrady RBI single - but it went downhill from
there. UBC took advantage of a pair of bases loaded walks in the
fourth inning rally, capped by a Jordan Pandoff
two-run single to make it 8-2. It was all Eric Brown would need, as he
went eight-plus innings of six-hit ball to get the win. Game 2 saw Fletcher Vynne
hit a three-run homer and Alex White smack a two-run double as part of the
eight-run second for UBC. Matt
Mejia (Ontario, Ore.
/ Eastern Oregon U.) had a pair of doubles for the Yotes, including an RBI
double in the fourth to cut the margin to 8-3, but The C of I could not get
over the hump.
ABOUT THE COACH: The 2008 season marks
the 21st year in The College of Idaho baseball program for head coach Shawn Humberger, his eighth year as Coyote skipper. Last season, he led the squad to a 31-17
mark, their third-straight Cascade Conference championship, and a runner-up finish
at the NAIA Region I Tournament. During
his tenure, Humberger has compiled a 251-173-1
record, including a third-place finish at the 2002 NAIA World Series. He has been named CCC Baseball Coach of the
Year in 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007, along with earning NAIA Region I
Coach-of-the-Year and CCC Men's Coach-of-the-Year for all sports in 2002.

baseball program, head to the official homepage of the Yotes – www.collegeofidaho.edu/athlete/baseball.htm.
SOFTBALL (14-9): Ten-game road trip begins with key
CCC twinbills at Oregon Tech and Southern
Oregon
LAST WEEK: vs. Northwest Christian (W 8-0, L
1-0 (8)), vs. Idaho
State (L 1-0, L 6-5 (9)),
vs. Northwest Nazarene (L 9-4, W 5-2)
COMING UP: at No. 23 Oregon
Tech (DH), Friday, 3 p.m. (PT); at Southern Oregon
(DH), Saturday, 11 a.m. (PT); at Idaho
State (DH), Monday, Noon.
LADY YOTES RANKED 22ND IN LATEST
POLL: The NAIA
released its third Top-25 Coaches Poll of the regular-season, with the Lady
Yotes ranked No. 22 in the nation. The C
of I dropped two spots from their No. 20 perch in the last tabulation – but
find themselves amongst the nation’s elite for the ninth-straight polling
period. Cal Baptist regained the top
spot in the poll, followed by Point Loma Nazarene and Lubbock Christian. Two other Northwest teams are in the poll,
Simon Fraser at No. 11 and Oregon Tech at No. 23. The national poll will be released every
Wednesday for the remainder of the season.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: The third NAIA Region I Top-5
ranking was released on Monday, with Simon Fraser maintaining the top
spot. The Lady Yotes were in the No. 2
spot, followed by Oregon Tech, Concordia, and Eastern
Oregon.
ZILLNER’S PERFECTO EARNS WEEKLY
HONORS: Although
her overall numbers were not as good as they were a week ago – a perfect game
goes a long way. C of
I pitcher Katie Zillner
(Emmett, Idaho
/ Chicago State U.) was named Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I Pitcher
of the Week on Monday for the second time this season, thanks to a 1-2 record
and a 0.56 ERA in three games. The
senior struck out 21 batters without a walk and lost a pair of 1-0 decisions,
but it was her 8-0 perfect game win over Northwest Christian that clinched her the award.
OTHER NO-NO’S IN C OF I HISTORY: It marked the second perfect game
thrown in Lady Yote history, as Katie Zillner joined Nicole Glenn, who tossed a seven-inning
perfecto against Walla Walla in 2003. Zillner has two
other no-no’s to her credit, not allowing a hit last season against both Great Falls and Northwest
Christian. The fifth no-hitter in C of I
history was in 2005, when Kerri Russell tossed a five-inning no-no against
Concordia.
GRACING THE TV SCREEN: The perfect game went a long way for
Katie Zillner, who saw herself a lot on the television
over the weekend. Zillner’s
perfect game was the Play of the Week on KTVB’s
Sunday Sports Extra, while she was named KIVI’s
Athlete of the Week, while the ABC affiliate also showed highlights of the
Saturday game vs. Idaho
State.
NO WALKS: Keeping additional runners off the
bases has been key to Katie Zillner’s region-best
1.01 ERA. Zillner
will take a 32-and-a-third innings streak without issuing a walk into the
ten-game road trip. She has not issued a
walk in seven-straight appearances and has a gaudy 10-to-1 strikeout to walk
ratio (113 K’s to 13 BB).
UNIQUE 2008 NUMBERS: Interesting numbers have been
uncovered for the 2008 softball season – some good, some bad. As a team, the Lady Yotes have recorded a 1-5
record in one-run games this season, but are 6-1 in games decided by
six-or-more runs. Individually, both Dani Villyard (Kent, Wash. / Kentlake HS) and Haley Butcher (Eagle, Idaho
/ Eagle HS) have been nails with runners in scoring position – with Villyard hitting .500 and Butcher .438 in those
situations. The Coyotes want Nicole Antonoplos
(Boise, Idaho
/ Idaho State U.) at the plate with two outs, as the transfer is 7-for-11
with a pair of outs on the board. There
are also some interesting numbers regarding Katie Zillner
– as she ranks No. 3in the NAIA in batters struck out per seven innings (11.5),
and is hitting .412 when pitching, but is batting just .188 when she is playing
in the outfield.
SCHEDULE CHANGE: The doubleheader scheduled for April
8 vs. Great Falls in Pocatello
has been changed, with the two teams now meeting in Caldwell on April 15. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
MAKING THE TRIP SOUTH: The chances at a repeat CCC
championship hinge on the Lady Yotes performance this weekend on the long trip
to the southern reaches of Oregon.
Up first is Oregon Tech, who
climbed into the NAIA poll for the first time this season at No. 23. The Owls (16-10, 6-2 CCC) are tied for the
league lead – but just one game ahead of the Coyotes. OIT is paced by All-CCC selection Jenni Bittle (.341 6 HR 23 RBI;
9-5 1.51 ERA), their top hitter and pitcher.
Brittany Warren (.303 4 HR 18 RBI) and Bess Fagan (.293 2 HR 20 RBI) are
other key offensive components, as is pitcher Keri Gesner (6-5 3.17 ERA). Last season, the Yotes won 3-of-5 meetings
with the Owls, but OIT has dominated the all-time series, 23-5. Saturday, it’s off to Southern Oregon, and a
battle with the Raiders (6-14, 4-4).
Southern is led by Alicia Caudill (.318 1 HR 6 RBI; 3-7 4.79 ERA), their
top hitter and pitcher, along with Bailey Price (.310 1 HR 7 RBI) and Joelle Riekeman (3-7 4.64
ERA). The Raiders have played eight
games against nationally-ranked teams – going 0-8 against Cal Baptist,
Concordia-Irvine, Azusa Pacific, and Vanguard.
The Yotes won 3-of-4 games last season vs. SOU, but trail the all-time
series with the Raiders, 20-9.
ANOTHER MEETING WITH IDAHO STATE:
After playing a
pair of one-run games last weekend, the Lady Yotes will head to Eastern Idaho
for a twinbill Monday against Idaho State. The Bengals (5-19),
who reinstated fastpitch softball last season, have
won their last four games in a row – all against NAIA teams. ISU is led by Kentucky transfer Megan Miller (.333 8 RBI)
and former Eagle star Heather Dixon (.292 5 HR 16 RBI), while both Kandis Clesson (2-2 4.04 ERA) and
Natasha Milosevic (3-7 5.63 ERA) both pitched well last weekend against the
Yotes. ISU leads the series, 4-2,
including a pair of wins in Pocatello
last season.
RECORD BOOK: Four different Coyotes find
themselves in the career record book midway through the 2008 season. Leading the way is Katie Zillner,
who ranks among the Top-10 in five offensive – No. 2 in RBI’s (76) and doubles
(30), No. 3 in home runs (6) and runs scored (68), and No. 6 in hits (107), and
seven pitching categories – No. 1 in wins (33), strikeouts (451), and shutouts
(11), No. 2 in innings pitched (332.1), games started (54), and complete games
(41), and No. 3 in appearances (64).
Haley Butcher ranks in the Top-10 in five offensive categories – No. 3
in home runs (6), No. 4 in doubles (24), No. 5 in RBI’s (56), No. 6 in runs
scored (62), and No. 7 in hits (104).
Rounding out the group are Stacy
Smith (Draper, Utah / Juan Diego HS),
who is in the Top-10 in five offensive categories – No. 1 in home runs (21) and
RBI’s (77), No. 6 in doubles (19), No. 7 in runs scored (57), and No. 8 in hits
(93), while Brooke Judy (Kuna, Idaho / Kuna HS) is No. 3
all-time in pitching wins (19).
CONFERENCE TEAM STATISTICS: Batting Average – Oregon Tech .304,
College of Idaho .281, Eastern Oregon .270, Concordia .268, Corban
.257, Northwest Christian .237, Southern Oregon .236; Earned Run Average –
College of Idaho 1.70, Oregon Tech 2.25, Concordia 3.02, Northwest Christian
3.88, Eastern Oregon 4.19, Corban 4.27, Southern
Oregon 4.72; Fielding Percentage – Concordia .959, Oregon Tech .952, Corban .947, Southern Oregon .942, College of Idaho. 937, Eastern Oregon .932,
Northwest Christian .923.
SPLIT WITH NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN: Katie Zillner tossed the second
perfect game in College of Idaho softball history, however, Northwest Christian
rallied for an unearned run in the eighth inning of the nightcap, as the
two teams split Friday's twinbill in rain soaked Caldwell. The Yotes won the opener, 8-0, while the
Beacons ended a five-game losing streak with their first-ever Cascade
Conference win with a 1-0 victory in Game 2.
Zillner was dominant in Game 1, striking out
the first nine batters in a row, finishing with 12 punch outs in the five
inning game. In fact, NCC batters made contact with the senior's pitches
only once the first time through the order. A seven-run third inning,
helped by a pair of Beacon errors, lifted the Yotes to the win. Brooke
Judy had an RBI single in the frame, as three runs scored on NCC wild pitches.
Zillner helped her own cause by going 3-for-3, with
an RBI single, at the plate. Game 2 was
a pitchers’ dual in the rain, as Darci Byrne and Judy
matched zeros through seven innings. However, Zillner
was summoned from the pen and quickly gave up an infield single to Corrie Gustafson and a bloop
single to Lissa Hatefi.
Cassie Bishop then hit a ball that dropped in front of left fielder Donnae Carrell (Caldwell, Idaho / Middleton HS), with
Gustafson stopping at third, however, the throw in eluded the cut-off man,
allowing Gustafson to scored the game's lone run. The Lady Yotes had a chance in the bottom of
the inning, as Dani Villyard
led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. However, Byrne struck
out Nicole Antonoplos and Zillner
to end the game - finishing with a three-hit shutout, along with eight
strikeouts. It marked the first home
shutout loss by the Yotes since the 2006 season and just the second under head
coach Al Mendiola.
ONE-RUN LOSSES TO IDAHO STATE: The C of I played toe-to-toe with
NCAA Division I opponent Idaho State Saturday, however, the Bengals
came out on the right end of both games of the doubleheader, winning 1-0 and
6-5 at Symms Field.
The opener was a battle between Katie Zillner
and ISU's Natasha Milosevich
- as the two righties put up zeros over the first
five innings. The Bengals got on the board in
the sixth - as three-straight two-out singles, capped by an Ivy Sessions run
scoring base hit, gave the visitors the game's lone run. The Lady Yotes nearly tied it in the bottom
of the seventh, as The C of I had the tying run at second and winning run at
first with two outs - however, on a Kalie Kurdy (Boise,
Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) base hit to center, ISU's
Megan Miller threw out Haley Butcher at home plate to end the ball game. Game 2 saw the Coyotes take advantage of
three Bengal errors in the second inning to
plate three runs. ISU would rally, getting a solo homer from Heather
Dixon in the fourth, a Whitney Chaffe RBI double in
the fifth, and an Amber Sackett RBI single in the seventh
to tie the score to send the game to extra innings. With the international tiebreaker in place,
ISU tallied two unearned runs in the eighth, but the Coyotes responded with a
Butcher two-run single to tie the game at 5-5. Unfortunately, the rally
would not last, as the Bengals got a Miller sacrifice
fly in the ninth that proved to be the game winner. Kurdy had two hits
in the opener for The C of I, while Butcher had a pair of hits in the
nightcap.
SPLIT WITH NNU: Katie Zillner
struck out 11 batters in the nightcap, as The C of I salvaged a Tuesday split
with rival Northwest Nazarene, winning Game 2, 5-2, after the Crusaders took
the opener, 9-4, at Symms Field. With the win, the Lady Yotes won the season
series with their Canyon
County rivals for the
seventh-consecutive season. It also ended a season-high four-game losing
streak. Haley Butcher provided the
offense for The C of I, going 3-for-3 with two doubles
and an RBI single, as the Yotes opened up a 5-0 lead and cruised to the
win. Zillner allowed just one earned run on
four hits - recording her 22nd game with ten-or-more strikeouts and extended
her streak of innings without allowing a walk to 32.1. Game 1 was all Crusaders, as NNU jumped out
to a 3-0 lead in the first and never trailed. They used a four-run
fourth, keyed by a two-run Kate Free double, to put the game out of reach. Free drove in four runs for NNU, while Rachel
Bare had two hits and three runs scored. Butcher hit a two-run homer for
the Yotes, her third of the season, while Dani Villyard had three hits in the loss.
