SOCCER TEAM HOSTS SUCCESSFUL JAMBOREE: The C of I men’s and women’s soccer team partnered with Vallivue Youth Soccer and Caldwell Optimist Youth Soccer to bring the 2008 Jamboree to Symms Field.  Over 300 players, parents, and coaches from age six to ten were in attendance – enjoying games, tug-o-war, face painting, and a pizza dinner.  Well done Coyotes!!!

LAST WEEK: vs. Corban (W 8-7, W 4-2, W 19-13, W 16-1), at Central Washington (L 5-4, W 7-5)

COMING UP: vs. British Columbia (DH), Saturday, 1 p.m.; vs. British Columbia (DH), Sunday, 11 a.m.

YOTES SWEEP CCC AND REGION I AWARDS: The C of I swept this week's Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I baseball awards, as Pat Lyon (Bonners Ferry, Idaho / Bonners Ferry HS) was named Pitcher of the Week, and Cody Brubaker (Post Falls, Idaho / Spokane Falls CC) was named Player of the Week, announced by the league and regional office in Portland, Ore.  Lyon won the award for the second time this season - tossing a two-hitter in the Yotes 4-2 victory over Corban on Friday.  The senior did not walk a batter and struck out three, recording his fourth complete game in five outings.  He has a 4-1 record this year and leads The C of I staff with a 2.34 ERA.  Brubaker had a monster week - helping the Yotes sweep the four-game series with Corban.  The junior went 9-for-13 at the plate, with a double, triple, home run, and seven RBI.  He is now hitting .327 on the year with a team-high 31 RBI.

SWEEP OF UBC NETS REGIONAL IN CALDWELL: The playoff picture is almost complete – as the four teams have been determined for the NAIA Region I Tournament, with Lewis-Clark State, British Columbia, The C of I, and Concordia meeting to determine who will move on to the Region I/II Sectional.  However, the site of the tourney is still up for grabs, with this weekend’s C of I-UBC series determining the host.  The Coyotes must win all three counting games against the T-Birds to host the tournament, as UBC holds the tie-break advantage (due to a 4-2 record vs. Concordia, while the Yotes went 3-3).  The regional will be held May 8-10 at either Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver or Simplot Stadium in Caldwell.

YOTES SECURE FOURTH-STRAIGHT CCC TITLE: Another flag will be flying for the Coyote baseball team, as the Yotes won their fourth-straight Cascade Conference championship with a pair of wins over Corban on Friday.  In CCC-only games (not counting UBC), The C of I finished with a 14-4 record, while second-place Concordia heads into the final weekend at 8-7 (with three games left with Corban).  Under head coach Shawn Humberger, the Yotes have won CCC titles in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, and now 2008.

22 YEARS AND RUNNING: The Coyotes extended a pair of longstanding streaks last week – as the squad secured a playoff spot in the Region I Tournament and picked up their 25th win.  The will now participate in the postseason for the 22nd-straight season, dating back to the return of baseball at The C of I in 1987.  During that same stretch, the Yotes have won at least 25 games in each of the seasons – winning 40 or more games eight times, and 50 or more games twice.  Since baseball returned, the Coyotes have posted a 787-419-4 record – winning over 65-percent of their games.

REGIONAL/NATIONAL POLL: The NAIA Region I Coaches Poll remained the same this week, as Lewis-Clark State continues to sit in the No. 1 spot, followed by British Columbia and the Coyotes.  Rounding out the balloting are Concordia, Oregon Tech, and Corban.  The latest NAIA Top-25 saw Lubbock Christian in the No. 1 spot for the fourth-straight week, followed by L-C, Lee, Azusa Pacific, and Oklahoma City.  The final regional poll will be released next Monday afternoon, with the final national poll released next Wednesday.

ON A HITTING BINGE: Over the last 17 games – beginning with the first game of a doubleheader at Lewis-Clark State on April 8, the Yotes have recorded at least 12 hits in 12 of the games, for a team batting average of .363.  During that stretch, the Coyotes averaged nearly eight runs per game and had a team on base percentage of .440.  Eight players have seen their batting averages rise dramatically during the stretch – all hitting above .350 during the span.

SENIOR DAY ON SUNDAY: Sunday marks the final regular season home game for six C of I seniors.  Of the group, both Pat Lyon and Joey Zubizarreta (Boise, Idaho / Cochise CC) have been with the team for four seasons, with Jason Cox (Sandpoint, Idaho / Central Washington U.)  a three-year Coyote.  Both Tim Bourner (Buhl, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC) and Richie Snider (Sandpoint, Idaho / Porterville CC) have been a Coyote for two seasons, with Matt Greely (Juneau, Alaska / U. of the Cumberlands) in his first season.

HERE COME THE CANADIANS: Rounding out the regular season in Caldwell is British Columbia, looking to host the NAIA Region I Tournament for the third time in the last four seasons.  The T-Birds (22-23, 16-5 Region I) have struggled a bit lately, losing their last five games – albeit against Lewis-Clark State and the University of Washington.  Skipper Terry McKaig is a former Coyote and has built the UBC program from the ground up – including a berth in the 2004 NAIA World Series.  The 2008 club is led by infielders Matt Chester (.350 2 HR 21 RBI) and Ryan Pilgrim (.333 4 HR 27 RBI), along with outfielder Mike Styrna (.339 1 HR 22 RBI), while the pitching staff is anchored by Mark Hardy (6-4 4.66 ERA) and Eric Brown (4-1 4.47 ERA).  The T-Birds took 3-of-4 from the Coyotes last month and hold a 40-31 series edge.

REGION I TEAM STATISTICS: Batting Average – Lewis-Clark State .353, College of Idaho .308, British Columbia .294, Concordia .287, Oregon Tech .282, Corban .259; Earned Run Average – Lewis-Clark State 3.05, College of Idaho 5.04, British Columbia 5.27, Oregon Tech 5.31, Concordia 5.72, Corban 7.02; Fielding Percentage – Lewis-Clark State .966, Corban .956, British Columbia .952, Concordia .952, College of Idaho .951, Oregon Tech .940.

UPDATING THE RECORD BOOK: Three Coyotes have moved up the ladder on the Yotes career record book list.  Dane McGrady (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS)  is tied for No. 2 all-time in hit by pitches (47), Joey Zubizarreta is tied for No. 5 in appearances (66), with Luke Howarth (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) sitting in the No. 9 spot on the sacrifice hits (13) category.

RECAP OF CORBAN SERIES: Saturday - Alex O'Brien (Everett, Wash. / Everett CC) hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to cap a wild opener and Pat Lyon tossed a two-hitter in the nightcap, as the Yotes clinched their fourth-straight Cascade Conference baseball title with 8-7 and 4-2 victories over Corban College at Simplot Stadium.  Game 1 was a see-saw affair, as the Yotes scored three in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings, then won it in the ninth.  Leading 2-1 in the sixth, the Warriors used a Josh Warner suicide squeeze to score the tying run, then took the lead on a Kyle Taylor RBI single.  The Yotes would come right back, getting a Matt Mejia (Ontario, Ore. / Eastern Oregon U.) two-run single to take a 4-3.  Closer Jason Barry (Castlegar, B.C. / U. of Northern Iowa) would get the first two outs in the seventh, but Corban opened the floodgates, as seven straight batters reached base - three on singles, three on walks, and a hits batsman of Cameron Meier with the bases loaded to give the visitors the lead - a margin that would grow to 7-4.  However, the Yotes came right back, getting an RBI infield single by Jake Miller (Idaho Falls, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC) and a Richie Snider sacrifice fly to make it 7-6.  With the tying run at third, reliever Jason Braun coaxed a game-ending grounder to third, but Nate Hiebert's throw was wide, allowing the tying run to score to send the game to extra innings.  In the ninth, Miller reached on an infield single and with one out, moved to second on a Cody Brubaker base hit.  O'Brien then followed with a liner through the right side, nearly clipping Brubaker, with Miller scoring the game winner.  Andrew Brock (Burnaby, B.C.) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to get the win, with Braun taking the loss.  Brubaker went 3-for-5, with Miller, Mejia, O'Brien, and Bryan Champ (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) all recording two hits.  Taylor and Daniel Flores had two hits for Corban.  Game 2 was dominated by Lyon, who went the distance, allowing two unearned runs on a pair of hits, registering three strikeouts without a walk.  The Yotes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, as Brubaker launched a two-run triple to right-center and O'Brien followed with an RBI single.  Corban got one back in the second on a Taylor sacrifice fly, but The C of I added a run in the third on a Snider RBI double.  The inning could have been much worse for the Warriors, but they recorded a rare triple play, as O'Brien lined a ball to first with the runners in motion, with Taylor touching the bag for the second out, and tossing to second for the third.  Brubaker, Miller, and Jacob Garsez (Caldwell, Idaho / Columbia Basin CC) each had two hits for the Yotes.  Sunday – The Yotes pounded out 35 runs and 35 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Corban College, topping the visitors 19-14 and 16-1 at Simplot Stadium.  Game 1 was a wild affair, as the Coyotes jumped out to an early 13-0 lead - getting four in the first, a seven-run third inning, keyed by two-run singles by Garsez and Champ and a two-run homer from Brad Carlsen (Reno, Nev. / Western Nevada CC), and a two-run double by Gavin Gamboa (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) in the fourth.    The game was far from over, as the Warriors would rally, getting eight unearned runs in the fifth - taking advantage of four Yote errors in the frame, then four more in the sixth, including a three-run Flores homer, cutting the margin to 14-12.  Corban would get as close as 14-13, before the Yotes put the game away with a five-run seventh, capped by a Brubaker two-run homer.  Joey Zubizarreta gutted out five innings to get the win, while Brock allowed just one earned run in four innings of relief to notch the save.  Brubaker went 4-for-5 with four RBI, with Mejia going 4-for-4 and Carlsen going 3-for-5 with three runs scored.    Flores went 4-for-5 with four RBI in the loss.  Game 2 was all Coyotes, as seven different C of I pitchers tossed one inning each - allowing just six hits overall.  The offense took advantage of seven hit by pitches and four walks, scoring the first 12 runs of the game to run away with the win.  Dane McGrady provided the big blow in a six-run first with a two-run double, with a Garrett Schultz (Belgrade, Mont. / Belgrade HS) two-run double in the second making it 9-0.  Brett Ward (Nampa, Idaho / Nampa HS) went 2-for-3 with four runs scored in the win - as six different Yotes had two hits in the lopsided win.

RECAP OF TWINBILL AT CENTRAL: The Yotes split a doubleheader Tuesday at Central Washington, losing the opener 5-4, but winning the nightcap, 7-5, at Tomlinson Field in Ellensburg, Wash.  The Yotes took advantage of six errors and 12 hits to build a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, but the Wildcats rallied for the win.  A Tyler Scoggin squeeze bunt tied the game at 4-4, with Jaime Nilsen ending the contest with an RBI double to center.  Jason Barry rebounded from a tough weekend outing to toss four innings of four hit ball, allowing a pair of unearned runs with three strikeouts.  Chris Larsen (Vancouver, Wash. / Everett CC), Dan Thiry (Meridian, Idaho / Meridian HS), and Dustin Carlson (Bremerton, Wash. / Olympic CC) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief, with Alex O'Brien registering three hits.  Game 2 saw the Yotes use a three-run seventh to ensure the win.  Jake Miller provided the big blow with a two-run single - which provided the winning margin.  Nilsen hit a three-run homer in the seventh to chase C of I starter Justin Marsh-Quinlan (Seabeck, Wash. / Olympic CC), but Carlson recorded the final three outs to pick up his first save.  Marsh-Quinlan picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing just two earned runs in the first six innings, walking six, and striking out five.  Bryan Champ picked up a hit in the seventh inning, extending his hitting streak to a season-high 15 games.

ABOUT THE COACH: The 2008 season marks the 21st year in The College of Idaho baseball program for head coach Shawn Humberger, his eighth year as Coyote skipper.  Last season, he led the squad to a 31-17 mark, their third-straight Cascade Conference championship, and a runner-up finish at the NAIA Region I Tournament.  During his tenure, Humberger has compiled a 261-180-1 record, including a third-place finish at the 2002 NAIA World Series.  He has been named CCC Baseball Coach of the Year in 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2007, along with earning NAIA Region I Coach-of-the-Year and CCC Men's Coach-of-the-Year for all sports in 2002.

SOFTBALL (23-16, 12-10): Senior Day set for Saturday as Yotes need one win to secure spot in Region I Tournament

LAST WEEK: vs. Southern Oregon (W 4-0, W 9-1), vs. No. 19 Oregon Tech (W 2-1, W 5-2)

COMING UP: vs. Eastern Oregon (DH), Saturday, 1 p.m.

FAN APPRECIATION / SENIOR DAY: Saturday afternoon, the Coyotes will honor all of their fans – as it is Fan Appreciation Day at Symms Field as Eastern Oregon comes to town.  Admission is free for all, while City of Caldwell Mayor Garrett Nancolas will be throwing out the first pitch, while local high school softball teams will be recognized throughout the day.  It will also mark the final home games for a pair of C of I seniors – Kelsi Murdock (Kuna, Idaho / Kuna HS) and Katie Zillner (Emmett, Idaho / Chicago State U.).

HOT STREAK HELPS YOTES CONTROL PLAYOFF DESTINY: The C of I got hot at the right time of the season, as the Lady Yotes went from being out of the playoff picture to holding their own destiny, in the matter of two weeks.  With an eight-game win streak, the Coyotes vaulted from a fifth-place tie into sole possession of third-place, with just two games remaining in the regular season.  One victory over Eastern Oregon on Saturday would secure the team their second-straight trip to the NAIA Region I Tournament and their third-consecutive playoff berth overall.

TIE-BREAK SCENARIOS: Four teams – The C of I, Corban, Eastern Oregon, and Southern Oregon, are within two games of third-place in the loop standings and the final berth to the regional tournament.  For the Coyotes, they clinch a playoff spot one of two ways – a victory over Eastern Oregon (as they could finish no worse than 13-11 in league and would win a head-to-head tiebreaker with Corban based on a 3-1 series win), or a pair of losses to Eastern Oregon, a Corban split with Concordia, and a Southern Oregon loss at Oregon Tech (as the Yotes would be tied with both Corban and EOU at 12-12, with the head-to-head tiebreak among the teams deadlocked at 6-6, it would move to descending order, which the Yotes would win with two victories over OIT).  Corban can only move on in the playoffs in one scenario - with two wins over Concordia and two C of I losses to Eastern, giving them a 13-11 record with everyone else at 12-12.  EOU can get in three ways – but has to sweep the Yotes.  If they finish in third-place at 12-12 with the Coyotes, they move on (3-1 series win); if they are tied with the Coyotes and Southern Oregon (and Corban loses two games), EOU moves on with a 6-2 record against the two teams; and if EOU is tied with Corban, C of I, and Southern, they move on with a 7-5 record against the squads.  Southern Oregon, who held third all to themselves heading into last weekend, has been eliminated from contention.

REGIONAL/NATIONAL POLL: The second-to-last regional poll was released on Monday and saw some shake-ups.  Simon Fraser is precariously on top, despite losing two games to unranked Great Falls.  They are followed by Oregon Tech, Concordia, the Lady Yotes, who return to the Top-5 after a two-week hiatus.  Rounding out the poll is both Eastern Oregon and Corban, who are tied in the No. 5 spot.  Nationally, Cal Baptist claims the No. 1 spot in the NAIA, followed by Point Loma Nazarene, Oklahoma City, Mobile, and Trevecca Nazarene – with SFU at No. 14 and OIT at No. 21.

ZILLNER NABS ANOTHER WEEKLY HONOR: For the second-straight week, Katie Zillner was named Cascade Conference and NAIA Region I Pitcher of the Week.  The senior went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and one save in 15 innings of work against Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech.  She pitched a three-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over SOU, striking out 11, followed up with a four-hitter in a 2-1 win over OIT, and a 1-2-3 seventh to notch a save in Game 2 vs. Tech.  She has won Pitcher of the Week honors now four times this season and eight times in her three seasons with the Yotes.

WIN STREAK: The Coyotes have rattled off eight wins in a row at a crucial time – recording their third-longest win streak ever.  Last season, the squad posted a nine-game win streak from March 23-April 6, then following a loss, ran off a school record ten wins in a row from April 7 to April 27.

WHO’S HOT DURING THE EIGHT-GAME STRETCH: The bats have come alive during the eight-game win streak, as the Yotes have hit .307 as a team.  Leading the way offensively is Katie Zillner, who has 13 hits in 27 at bats, including six runs scored, a homer, and four RBI.  Also swinging hot sticks are Haley Butcher (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS), who is hitting .400 with five runs scored, a homer, and six RBI in the eight games, and Donnae Carrell (Caldwell, Idaho / Middleton HS), who is hitting .333 with six runs scored, a homer, and two RBI.  Zillner has been nearly unhittable in the circle, going 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 46 strikeouts, with Brooke Judy (Kuna, Idaho / Kuna HS) rebounding from a tough mid-season to go 3-0 with a 0.46 ERA over the last two weeks, as the Yotes staff boasts a miniscule 0.27 ERA.

ABOUT EASTERN OREGON: No strangers to Symms Field, Eastern Oregon will look to head to the NAIA Region I Tournament for the first time since 2005 if they can sweep the Yotes and get some help elsewhere. The Mountaineers (20-22, 10-12 CCC) have won nine of their last 11 games, including a sweep of Southern Oregon on Saturday to put themselves in position for a postseason spot.  Eastern is led by slugger Megan Platz (.341 14 HR 34 RBI), the league leader in home runs, while Megan Monaghan (.351 3 HR 22 RBI) and Lydia Holm (.328 9 HR 39 RBI) have put up big numbers.  In the circle, Kelly West (8-10 3.32 ERA) is the Mounties No. 1 starter, while both Teri Cisler (2-3 2.23 ERA) and Melodee Mildenberger (8-9 4.81 ERA) provide options.  EOU has played six games already this season in Caldwell, going 3-3 against Holy Names, Idaho State, and Northwest Christian.  They split the doubleheader earlier in the season with the Yotes in La Grande, with The C of I winning 10-1 and EOU winning 4-1.  The teams have met 36 previous times, with Eastern holding a 25-11 series edge.

CONFERENCE TEAM NUMBERS: Batting Average – Oregon Tech .322, Concordia .290, Corban .280, College of Idaho. 273, Eastern Oregon .268, Southern Oregon .255, Northwest Christian .225; Earned Run Average – Oregon Tech 2.14, College of Idaho 2.27, Concordia 3.04, Northwest Christian 3.41, Corban 3.42, Eastern Oregon 3.91, Southern Oregon 4.58; Fielding Percentage – Concordia .958, Oregon Tech .957, Corban .948, Eastern Oregon .944, College of Idaho .942, Southern Oregon .941, Northwest Christian .924.

YOTES SWEEP ASIDE SOUTHERN OREGON: Katie Zillner tossed her third-straight shutout in the opener and had the walk-off RBI single in Game 2, as The C of I extended their win streak to six games with key 4-0 and 9-1 wins over Southern Oregon at Symms Field.  Game 1 was dominated by Zillner, who allowed just three hits and struck out 11 to pick up her 12th win of the season.  Donnae Carrell got things going for the Yotes, leading the game off with a home run, with Zillner making it 2-0 with an RBI single in the third.  Brooke Judy capped the scoring a two-run single in the fourth.  Game 2 saw the Raiders take an early 1-0 lead on a C of I error, but the Yotes would bounce back.  A two-out infield single with the bases loaded by Haley Butcher in the third tied the score, with Stacy Smith (Draper, Utah / Juan Diego HS) following with a two-run single to make it 3-1.  An inning late, the Yotes would blow the game open, as Sammy Dodge (Mountain Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS) cracked a pinch hit three-run homer, followed by a long ball by Zillner, and a Kalie Kurdy (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) RBI single to make it 8-1.  In the fifth, Zillner bounded a ball through the box to score Stephanie Stover (Caldwell, Idaho / Middleton HS) with the mercy-rule inducing run.  Judy picked up her second-straight win, allowing five hits without a walk, striking out two.  Zillner went 3-for-4 with Caylin LePire (Boise, Idaho / Mountain View HS) going 3-for-3 with two doubles in the win.  Ricci Coultas had two hits in the loss for SOU.

COYOTES SWEEP TECH FOR FIRST TIME: The Lady Yotes completed a perfect weekend their first-ever doubleheader sweep of No. 19 ranked Oregon Tech, winning 2-1 and 5-2 at Symms Field.  With the wins, the Lady Yotes extended their win streak to a season-high eight games, while ending OIT's win streak at 16.  Game 1 was a pitchers dual between all-stars Katie Zillner and Jenni Bittle, as both hurlers put goose-eggs on the board through five innings.  Tech got on the board first, as Amber Sinicrope reached on an error and scored on a two-out Brittany Warren double - one of only four hits allowed by Zillner.  The Yotes would come right back, loading the bases with one out, with Stacy Smith singling home the tying run.  The C of I would win it in the bottom of the seventh, as Donnae Carrell singled and moved to second on a two-out Zillner base hit.  Dani Villyard (Kent, Wash. / Kentlake HS) would follow, ripping a Bittle offering off the left field wall for the game winner.   Zillner had three hits, with Smith, Carrell, and Villyard each having two hits for the Yotes, while Bittle fanned 11 batters in the loss for OIT.  Game 2 saw the Yotes break open a 1-1 tie in the third with a four-run outburst, getting a three-run Haley Butcher home run and an RBI single from Kalie Kurdy to take a 5-1 lead.  Tech would cut the margin to 5-2 in the sixth, but Carrell came in relief of starter Brooke Judy and with the tying run at the plate, coaxed a pair of pop ups to get out of the jam.  Zillner would then record the final three outs to pick up the save.  Judy won her third-straight decision, allowing just one earned run with three strikeouts in five-plus innings of work.  Smith and Villyard each had two hits in the win, while Katie King went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Owls.

ABOUT THE COACH: Al Mendiola is in his third year as head coach of The College of Idaho softball program and has a 78-53 all-time record – already the all-time winningest coach in C of I history.  The native of San Diego, Calif. has helped the Lady Yotes become a force in Northwest softball, leading The C of I to back-to-back playoff appearances, including the 2007 Cascade Conference championship.  Following the season, Mendiola was honored as CCC and NAIA Region I Coach of the Year after the Coyotes set a school record with 37 wins, climbing to as high as No. 14 in the NAIA poll, an advanced to the regional title game.  A 1994 graduate of The C of I, Mendiola played two seasons of baseball for head coach Tim Mooney, earning honorable mention NAIA All-America honors as a senior.
