YOTES REGAIN THE I-84 CUP: After losing three-straight I-84 Cup battles with Eastern Oregon, the Yotes regained the traveling trophy of the two easternmost outposts in the Cascade Conference with Tuesday’s win.  The Yotes now hold a 5-4 edge in I-84 Cup games since the trophy was established in 2005.

NIELSON HAS BIG NIGHT: Senior Kurt Nielson (Rexburg, Idaho / Coll. of Eastern Utah) had a big night in the win over EOU, scoring a season high 14 points – including three crucial three-pointers.  He also had seven rebounds in the win – the fourth time in his last six games that Nielson has recorded at least six boards in a contest.

SPINKS TO THE RESCUE: A big spark in the win over No. 19 Eastern was Steffen Spinks (Manteca, Calif. / East Union HS), who led the way with 19 points, but recorded a career-high nine rebounds – seven of them after halftime.  Spinks had three crucial offensive boards late in regulation and in overtime, including a rebound and put-back that gave The C of I a four-point lead with two minutes left.  The junior has also provided a scoring punch, recording at least eight points in 12-straight games.

MCINTOSH THRIVING IN STARTING ROLE: Head coach Mark Owen made a change to the starting line-up to begin 2009 and it has paid off, as Jabari McIntosh (Union City, Calif. / West Valley CC) has worked himself into the top-five.  The junior transfer had a career high 11 points and seven rebounds against Northwest Christian and added seven points and five boards vs. EOU.

OVERTIME GAMES UNDER COACH O: The win over Eastern marked the 17th overtime contest in the nine seasons Mark Owen has been head coach of the Coyotes.  In those games, The C of I has a 12-5 record, including a 2-0 mark this season.

REBOUNDING THE KEY: So far this season, the Coyotes have outrebounded their opponents five times in 15 games, while being within three boards of their opponents four times.  Over the previous 58 games (covering the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons), the Yotes had more rebounds than their opponents just eight times.

CHAMP SEES REBOUND STREAK END, OTHERS INTACT: Guard Bryan Champ (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) has recorded double-figure rebound games in two of his last three outings – however, he did not grab a board in the win Saturday over Northwest Christian.  It marked the first time in 71 games that the senior had not recorded a rebound.  Two other long streaks remain, as   Champ has now recorded a steal in 44 consecutive games, at least two points scored in 62-straight contests.

CAREER RECORDS: Two Coyotes find themselves in the Top-10 on The C of I all-time career record book.  Bryan Champ ranks second all-time in steals (224), while needed 27 assists to crack the Top-10 in the category (202).  Craig McGee (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) ranks fifth all-time in blocked shots (59) and eighth in free throw attempts (358), while closing in on the Top-10 in free throws made (220) and rebounds (384).

CCC/NATIONAL POLL: The third regular-season NAIA Top-25 Poll was released on Jan. 5, with OIT retaining the No. 1 spot, with Warner Pacific No. 10, Evergreen State No. 15, and Eastern Oregon at No. 19.  The Top-25 poll will be released every Monday for the remainder of the season.

COYOTES IN THE CCC STATS: As a team, the Yotes rank third in a pair of CCC stat categories – scoring defense (71.7) and blocked shots (3.5).  The C of I is fourth in the loop in turnover margin (+1.2), fifth in opponents field goal percentage (.439) and steals per game (8.2), sixth in opponents rebounds per game (36.0),. seventh in scoring margin (+0.8), eighth in free throw percentage (.664) and assists per game (13.1), ninth in scoring offense (72.5), rebounds per game (34.9), and rebound margin (-1.1), and tenth in field goal percentage (.451), three-point percentage (.310), and opponents three-point percentage (.385).  Individually, Craig McGee ranks among the Top-10 in four categories – third in blocked shots per game (1.1), fifth in field goal percentage (.596), ninth in rebounds per game (7.0), and tenth in scoring average (15.8).  Bryan Champ ranks second in the loop in two different categories – three-point percentage (.513) and steals per game (2.7), while ranking tenth in free throw percentage (.786).

CCC LEADERS: Scoring Average – Nate Menefee (ESC) 23.2, Adam Moore (WP) 22.0, Ben Pawlak (CAS) 21.2, Paul Martin (CRB) 17.7, Jguwon Hogges (OIT) 17.6; Rebound Average – Kaylone Riley (WP) 10.7, Josh Wetzler (OIT) 9.6, Alex Tiefenthaler (CU) 8.0, Paul Carollo (EOU) 7.7, Ryan Barker (CAS) 7.5; Field Goal Percentage – Wetzler .706, Christian Cavanaugh (OIT) .673, Steve Trotter (ESC) .628, Dylan Perry (NCU) .622, Craig McGee (CI) .596; Assists Average – Justin Parnell (OIT) 5.8, Kao Saelee (CAS) 4.8, Jeremy Templeton (EOU) 4.6, Martin 3.9, Kris Groce (EOU) 3.8.

SLOSHING ALL THE WAY TO NORTHWEST: It will be an adventure for the Coyotes this weekend, trekking to the Puget Sound area that has been besieged by snow and now flooding – but Friday, Northwest awaits the Yotes.  The Eagles (10-6, 4-3) have not lost to a team with a losing record this season – while posting a 4-2 mark at home.  NU is an efficient team, connecting on 41-percent of their three-point attempts and 74-percent of their free throws, while holding a five-rebound per game edge on the glass.  CCC Freshman of the Year Greg George (13.4 ppg, 7.2 rpg) is their leading scorer, with help from Eddie Coulson (12.8 ppg, 3.8 rpg), Blake Solomon (11.9 ppg, 3.2 apg), and Lucas Ashe (9.4 ppg, .515 3fg%).  NU has won the last five meetings in Kirkland, but trails the all-time series with the Coyotes, 15-10.

CAN THE YOTES CHOP DOWN EVERGREEN?: Saturday, its off to Olympia for a battle with possibly the most-athletic team in the league, Evergreen State.  The Geoducks (9-4, 5-1), ranked No. 15 in the latest NAIA poll, are unbeaten at home and have scored at least 80 points in 11 of their 13 games.  Jeff Drinkwine’s bunch typically plays eight deep, led by Preseason CCC Player of the Year Nate Menefee (23.2 ppg, 3.2 apg), while Nick Moore (17.2 ppg, 5.7 rpg), Steve Trotter (11.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg), and Michael Ward (11.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg) all average in double figures.  The two teams split games last season, with the Coyotes holding a 14-5 all-time series edge.

GAME RECAP: C OF I 71, NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN 65: In a game marred by 55 fouls and 72 free throws, charity tosses from Kelvin Potts (Oakland, Calif. / Chabot CC) and Craig McGee inside the final 30 seconds proved the difference, as The C of I stopped Northwest Christian, 71-65, Saturday night inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  The Coyotes used a 15-4 first half run, capped by a Brian Bergerson (Modesto, Calif. / Modesto CC) triple, to take a 21-15 lead, pushing the margin to 39-30 at the break.  A Bryan Champ three-ball would give the Yotes their biggest lead at 47-34, but NCU would not fold.  With four C of I starters on the bench with four fouls, the Beacons whittled at the margin, closing within 66-65 on a Dylan Perry lay-up inside the final minute.  However, defense played the final card, as Potts corraled a rebound after a missed Erik Quick-Warner driving lay-up with 24 seconds left and hit two free throws, the McGee grabbed a big board with ten seconds left off a missed trey in the corner from Jordan Whittenberg, making his two freebies to put the game out of reach.  McGee led the Yotes with 20 points and seven rebounds, with Bergerson coming off the bench to tally 13.  Champ had 12 points, but did not have a rebound - the first time in 71 games that the senior did not record a board.  Jabari McIntosh had a career-high 11 points and seven rebounds in the win.  The C of I canned 32-of-41 free throws on the night, including 21-of-26 in the second half.

GAME RECAP: C OF I 85, EASTERN OREGON 81 (OT): A driving Craig McGee lay-up with 2:28 left in overtime gave The C of I the lead for good, as the Coyotes held off No. 19 ranked Eastern Oregon, 85-81, in Tuesday night.  After two Kris Groce free throws with nine seconds left forced overtime for the Mountaineers, the Coyotes would never trail in the extra session.  Tied at 76-76, McGee split a double-team and kissed a high-arcing shot off the glass for a two-point lead.  An offensive rebound a put-back by Steffen Spinks would push the lead to four, but EOU would not go away, cutting the deficit to 80-79 on a Groce triple, but the Yotes responded with a Terriel Thomas (Chicago, Ill. / Borah HS)  lay-up and converted free throws down the stretch for the win.  The Yotes hit eight of their first ten shots on the night, jumping out to a 26-7 lead midway through the first half, but EOU rallied, scoring 16-straight points late in the half, as the two teams were deadlocked 35-35 at the break.  Eastern would take their biggest lead of the night at 60-50 on a Jordan Gregg putback with eight minutes left, but the Coyotes fought back, using a 13-2 run, capped by a Thomas lay-up to retake the lead.  Two ties and four lead changes would occur in the final two minutes of regulation.  Spinks led The C of I with 19 points and a career-high nine rebounds, with McGee adding 15.  Kurt Nielson had a season-high 14 points off the bench, with Kelvin Potts scoring 12 - six coming in overtime.  Groce led the Mounties with 24 points and six assists, with Neil Fryer adding 20 points and six rebounds.  Gregg had 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench for EOU.

NEW WIN STREAK RECORD: With the victory Tuesday over Eastern Oregon, the Lady Yotes established a new school record for consecutive wins, notching their 14th-straight victory in a row.  It eclipsed the former mark of 13 in a row set during the 1996-97 season.

ANOTHER WIN STREAK RECORD TIED: The win over Eastern also tied the most consecutive home wins in a row with 11.  The Lady Yotes have not lost at home this season (8-0) and equaled the mark set from Feb. 5, 1999 to Feb. 12, 2000.

YOTES CLIMB TO NO. 15 IN NAIA POLL: The C of I climbed two spots to No. 15 in the latest NAIA Division II Top-25 Coaches Poll, released Monday afternoon by the national office in Kansas City. Mo.  The Lady Yotes notched their highest national ranking since the 2000-01 season, when they elevated to No. 4 and lost in the national title game.  Concordia entered the Top-25 for the first time since the 2001-02 season at No. 20, while Southern Oregon was the first team listed in the Others Receiving Votes category.  The three unbeaten teams remaining in the NAIA Division II sit atop the poll - Morningside (Iowa), Shawnee State (Ohio), and Davenport (Mich.), followed by Jamestown (N.D.) and College of the Ozarks (Mo.).  The poll will be released each Monday for the remainder of the season.

LADY YOTES AT NO. 4 IN CFSN POLL: The Lady Yotes also find themselves among the Top-10 in an unofficial poll, released by the College Fanz Sports Network.  The C of I is ranked No. 4 in the poll – trailing just the three unbeaten teams in the NAIA.  Concordia (No. 11) and Southern Oregon (No. 18) are in the CFSN NAIA poll.

BEST START EVER: The 14-1 pushes the Lady Yotes into elite status, as The C of I has recorded their best 15-game start to a season.  The squad has surged past the 1997-98 team that opened with an 13-2 record.  That 1997-98 team also holds the school record for best 20-game start, recording a 17-3 record.

BIGGEST CCC WINS: The win over Northwest Christian on Saturday marked the seventh time in school history and first since the 2000-01 season that the Lady Yotes have won a league tilt by more than 40 points.  The record is 44, set in an 80-36 win over Evergreen State in 2000-01, while the team has a pair of 43 point wins – 73-34 over Northwest in 1996-97 and 78-35 over Eastern Oregon in 2000-01.

GALL HOT FROM 3: After a difficult opening month to the season, transfer guard Nicole Gall (Boise, Idaho / Santa Clara U.) has lived up to her Preseason All-CCC Team accolades.  The former NCAA Division I player connected on six of her first 33 shots from outside the arc, averaging just seven points per game through the Yotes first eight contests.  However, Gall has reversed her fortunes over the last seven games – hitting 25 of 47 long range shots and averaging 17 points a night.  She ranks among the league’s leaders in four different categories – including three-pointers made per game.

VANDER ESCH SETS STEALS RECORD: Forward Christon Vander Esch (Riggins, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC) extended a trio of long streaks in the victories over NW Christian and Eastern – she has now scored at least one point in 54-straight games, recorded a rebound in 64-straight games, and a steal in 32- straight games.  With a swipe in the NCU game, she became the all-time leader in steals (211), surpassing the total set by Jeannie Thompson in 2002.  She is second on the all-time blocked shots (123) list, sixth all-time in free throws attempted (307), seventh all-time in free throws made (208), ninth in field goal attempts (705), and tenth in rebounds (528) and points scored (792) – closing in on the top ten in field goals made (271), three-pointers made (42), and three-point attempts (136).

LADY YOTES IN THE CCC STATS:  As a team, the Lady Yotes lead the CCC in four team categories – rebounds per game (46.7) blocked shots per game (5.9),  steals per game (18.3), and opponents three-point percentage (.268), ranking second in opponents field goal percentage (.371), assists per game (16.8), and turnover margin (+6.9), and third in scoring offense (80.5).  The squad is fourth in scoring margin (+13.7), sixth in free throw percentage (.678), field goal percentage (.411), and rebound margin (+1.2), eighth in scoring defense (66.8), and last in opponents rebounds (45.5).  Individually, Christon Vander Esch ranks second in the loop in blocked shots per game (2.1) and steals per game (4.1), fifth in rebounds per game (8.1), and seventh in scoring average (14.6).  Nicole Bruce (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) is fifth in blocked shots per game (1.5), eighth in rebounds per game (7.5), and tenth in free throw percentage (.788), while Nicole Gall ranks fifth in three-pointers per game (2.1), sixth in steals per game (2.6), eighth in three-point percentage (.378), and tenth in blocked shots per game (0.9).  Katie Strunk (Shoshone, Idaho / Walla Walla CC) is fifth in field goal percentage (.522), with Meghan Hughes (Eagle, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) sixth in the league in field goal percentage (.511).

NATIONAL NUMBERS: As a team, the Lady Yotes lead the NAIA Division II in steals per game, while ranking third in blocked shots per game.  Christon Vander Esch is fifth nationally in steals per game and is ninth in blocked shots per game.

CCC LEADERS: Scoring Average – Kristina Schumacher (CAS) 24.5, Robin Swain (CAS) 18.0, Jacki Speer (SOU) 16.6, Katie Steigleman (CRB) 15.8, Emily Gray (NCU) 15.1; Rebound Average – Maya Gross (CAS) 9.8, Speer (SOU) 9.5, Gray 8.7, Amy Russell (CAS) 8.7, Christon Vander Esch (CI)  8.1; Field Goal Percentage – Callie McVicker (NCU) .560, Ann Snodderly (CU) .558, Danielle Clauson (CU) .550, Amanda Johnston (OIT) .540, Katie Strunk (CI) .522; Assist Average – Meagan Miyasaka (OIT) 6.9, Jenny Fiso (EOU) 5.3, Kailey Bostwick (CRB) 4.9, Swain 4.6, Whitney Scott (SOU) 4.4.

REVENGE ON THE MIND AT NORTHWEST: The Lady Yotes hit the road for the first time in 2009 this weekend, traveling to wet Washington State, opening with a tussle at Northwest.  The Eagles (5-11, 3-4 CCC) look for a repeat of last season’s stunning 77-74 win in Kirkland over the Coyotes – rallying from a 21-point second half deficit for the win.  NU has quality wins over Corban and Oregon Tech and will have an advantage on their 84-foot home court – despite struggling this season shooting the ball (.346 field goal percentage) and on the glass (-6.4 rebound margin).  Six different players have led the Eagles in scoring – including Rachel Mitchell (11.9 ppg, 2.8 rpg), Jessalyn Jackson (8.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg), and Carleigh Newman (7.8 ppg, 4.2 rpg).  It is the 28th all-time meeting between the teams, with the Lady Yotes holding a 21-6 series edge.

LOOKING FOR A CLAM BAKE AT EVERGREEN: Saturday night, the Coyotes head to Evergreen State and a rematch of last season’s CCC quarterfinal playoff game won by The C of I, 78-75.  The Geoducks (7-6, 2-4) have rebounded from the loss of starting post Rosiland Lee (9.7 ppg, 7.2 rpg) to a knee injury, by winning two of their last three games – thanks to a stingy defense (60.8 points allowed per game).  Evergreen is 5-2 at home this season – and upended the Lady Yotes in Olympia last season, 79-71.  Kristi Auckland (13.7 ppg, 7.1 rpg) has been the top scorer all season, while point-guard Joy White (7.3 ppg, 3.9 rpg) has had big games against The C of I.  It is the 24th meeting between the schools, with the Lady Yotes holding a 20-3 series edge.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 77, NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN 36:  A monster 34-3 run to open the game paved the way for The C of I to notch their 13th-straight win, defeating Northwest Christian, 77-36, Saturday in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  The No. 17 ranked Lady Yotes hit nine of their first ten shots in the first four minutes, including four three-pointers, cruising to a 22-1 lead.  It would get worse for the Beacons, as NCU converted just one of their first 12 shots, seeing the margin reach 30-points just nine minutes into the game.  The C of I would lead by as many as 46 points in their biggest Cascade Conference win since the 2000-01 season, when they defeated Evergreen State 80-36.  No Coyote player saw more than 21 minutes of action, as all 18 players on the roster saw time on the floor - with Christon Vander Esch leading the way with 17 points and six rebounds in 17 minutes of action.  Nicole Bruce had eight points and nine rebounds, Nicole Gall had eight points and five assists, Meghan Hughes had eight points and eight rebounds, and Whitney Owen added eight points and six rebounds - as 15 different players scored.  The Beacons, who remain winless in league play, made just 25-percent of their field goal attempts and converted 8-of-23 shots from the foul line.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 79, EASTERN OREGON 50: Nicole Gall scored a game-high 26 points as The C of I set a new school record for consecutive wins, sprinting past rival Eastern Oregon, 79-50, Tuesday in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.  It also marked just the second regular-season win over EOU since 2001 and the largest victory margin over the Mountaineers since a 77-35 win during the 2000-01 season.  Gall got the Yotes off on the right foot, scoring the first eight points for The C of I, jumping out to an 8-2 lead.  EOU would tie the score at 8-8 on an Ashlee Michelson lay-up, but it was all Coyotes from there, holding the visitors to just one made field goal over a nine minute stretch - building a 37-22 lead at the half.  The Purple and Gold would score 13-straight points early in the second half, keyed by a pair of triples from Christon Vander Esch and a trey from Gall, as the lead would balloon to 71-37 with nine minutes left.  Gall added six steals and four assists in the win, with Whitney Owen coming off the bench to score 14 points.  Vander Esch had ten points, seven rebounds, and five steals in the win, as The C of I forced 34 Mountie turnovers.  Brianna Smith was the offense for EOU, scoring 19 points - the lone Mountaineer in double figures.
