NAIA II’s – THANK YOU: After opening the season with five of six games against NAIA Division I opponents, the Coyotes finally played teams one an equal playing level – meeting two NAIA Division II clubs over the weekend, netting two wins.  Of the 56 non-conference games (including two remaining this season) since the 2003-04 season, the Coyotes have played 43 of them against NAIA Division I competition – which is allotted nearly twice as many scholarships at The C of I.  Conversely, the Yotes have played just four games against NAIA Division II teams (defeating William Jewell in 2003 and Bethany in 2005, along with last weekend’s wins over Menlo and Holy Names) – with just 15 of the 56 games played at home.  Overall, including this season, the Yotes are 31-23 in their last 52 non-conference counters – with four of the losses coming to NCAA Division I teams.

25-POINT WINS ON THE ROAD: Despite the success of the Coyotes over the last decade, the 2008-09 Yotes did something that had not been accomplished in over ten years – win back-to-back road games by 25 points or more.  The last time the Yotes won back-to-back games by 25-plus was in 2003-04, toppling Warner Pacific 73-35 and Eastern Oregon 104-65 – both in Caldwell.  The last road blow-outs were the opening two games of the 1998-99 season, stopping Missouri Valley 91-66 and Bellevue 108-77 in the Las Vegas Invitational.

LOVIN’ IT AT HOME: The trip to the Bay Area gave five Coyotes an opportunity to play in front of friends and family.  Of the quintet, a trio had big nights – with Kelvin Potts (Oakland, Calif. / Chabot CC) leading the way, averaging 14 points and five assists in the two games, including a season-high 16 against Holy Names.  Steffen Spinks (Manteca, Calif. / East Union HS) continued to provide a spark off the bench, tallying 17 points, on 6-of-7 shooting, against Menlo, followed by ten points against Holy Names, with Brian Bergerson (Modesto, Calif. / Modesto CC) scoring a season-high 18, including three three-pointers at Holy Names.

MCGEE AND STOKES CONSISTENT: The top-two scorers for the Yotes continued to put up quality numbers each night out.  Leading scorer, Craig McGee (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) averaged 11 points and five rebounds on the trip – and has recorded at least one blocked shot in all eight games this season.  Jordan Stokes (Las Vegas, Nev. / Lassen CC) averaged 16 points per game on the trip – including a season-high 17 points at Menlo, and has recorded at least eight points and five rebounds in every game this season.

CHAMP KEEPS STREAKS GOING: Senior guard Bryan Champ (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) kept his consecutive game streaks alive in the California wins.  Champ has recorded a steal in 37 consecutive games, at least two points scored in 55-straight games, and at least one rebound in 65 consecutive games.  He has moved into second-place on the all-time steals list with 203, sprinting past Rob Smith with five steals against Menlo.

THE NEWEST LITTLE YOTE: Forward Kurt Nielson (Rexburg, Idaho / Eastern Utah CC) missed the trip to California as he and wife Laurie celebrated the birth of their first daughter on Thursday,

TOUGHEST TRIP TO OPEN CCC SLATE: The Yotes will make the toughest trip in the Cascade Conference this weekend to open the 20-game league slate, heading to No. 1 ranked Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon.  The long jaunt south has been a graveyard for CCC teams over the last nine seasons – as only seven times a league foe has swept the two games on the trip (in 89 tries).  Warner Pacific has accomplished the feat three times, including the last two seasons, while Corban did it in 2001-02 and 2004-05, with the Yotes pulling the upsets in 2000-01 and 2002-03.

ABOUT OREGON TECH: The Yotes open up CCC play against the defending NAIA Division II champion Owls (10-0), who have won 15-games in a row, dating back to last season.  Despite graduating NAIA Player of the Year Ryan Fiegi, OIT returns four starters – including a rejuvenated Christian Cavanaugh (17.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and Jguwon Hogges (15.1 ppg, 2.8 apg), along with NNU transfer Justin Parnell (14.4 ppg, 6.9 apg, 5.8 rpg).  Tech averages 91 points a game, outscoring their opponents by 23 a night, while connecting on 52-percent of their field goal attempts.  The Owls took three meetings from the Yotes last season, all by single-digit margins, but trail the all-time series, 39-27.

COACH MILES CLIMBING THE HISTORICAL LIST: OIT head coach Dan Miles is in his 38th year in Klamath Falls and has a staggering 857-362 all-time record.  Miles ranks seventh on the all-time, all-divisions wins list, with next in his sights are longtime Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp with 876 wins and longtime North Carolina coach Dean Smith with 879.

ABOUT SOUTHERN OREGON: Saturday night, it’s over the hill to meet Southern Oregon, who looks to regain the magic that sent the Raiders (2-5) to NAIA Tournaments in 2005 and 2006.  Southern is picking up the tempo this season, however, averaging 19 turnovers a night, allowing 81 points a game, and hitting 26-percent of their three-point attempts, have slowed the progress.  However, Brian McDermott’s club has plenty of firepower, led by Eli Thornton (14.1 ppg, 4.9 rpg), Jarrad Childs (12.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg), and Humphrey Jackson (10.0 ppg, 23 rpg).  The Yotes have won the last five meetings and hold the all-time series lead, 37-17.

CCC LEADERS: Scoring Average – Ben Pawlak (CAS) 27.2, Nate Menefee (ESC) 23.3, Adam Moore (WP) 21.2, Christian Cavanaugh (OIT) 17.6, Steven Vaughan (CU) 17.6; Rebound Average – Kaylone Riley (WP) 12.0, Josh Wetzler (OIT) 9.3, Steve Trotter (ESC) 9.0, Ryan Barker (CAS) 8.2, Paul Carollo (EOU) 8.0; Field Goal Percentage – Cavanaugh .747, Wetzler .692, Craig McGee (CI) .676, Dylan Perry (NCU) .651, Kao Saelee (CAS) .636; Assists Average – Saelee 7.8, Justin Parnell (OIT) 6.9, Jeremy Templeton (EOU) 5.0, Kris Groce (EOU) 4.0, Menefee 4.0.

NATIONAL POLL: The first NAIA Division II Top-25 Coaches Poll was released on Monday, with Oregon Tech remaining in the No. 1 spot in the rankings.  Eastern Oregon climbed one spot to No. 5, while Warner Pacific jumped eight spots to No. 14.  Evergreen State rounds out the CCC teams in the poll at No. 20.  One other C of I opponent, Westminster, was ranked in the NAIA Division I poll, at No. 7.

GAME RECAP: C OF I 66, MENLO 41: Holding Menlo College to just 13-of-48 field goal shooting and forcing 39 turnovers, The C of I picked up their first road win of 2008, stopping the Oaks, 66-41, Friday at Pimm Pavilion.  The Coyotes used a 15-2 run midway through the first half to build a 29-14 advantage, then held Menlo without a field goal for the first nine minutes of the second half, using the 21-2 run to push the margin to 53-19 - and were never threatened.  Jordan Stokes and Steffen Spinks each had 17 points in the win - with Stokes adding a game-high eight rebounds, with Spinks going 6-for-7 from the floor.  Kelvin Potts had 11 points and five assists, with Craig McGee adding ten.  The Oaks, the defending California Pacific Conference champs, got 14 points from Julian Harris.

GAME RECAP: C OF I 90, HOLY NAMES 59: Six C of I players scored in double figures, as the Coyotes completed a Thanksgiving Weekend sweep in the Bay Area, stopping Holy Names, 90-59, Saturday inside Tobin Gym.  Brian Bergerson started with the hot hand, scoring 11 of his game-high 18 points in the first half, as the Yotes jumped out to a 14-2 lead and were never threatened.  The C of I would have a comfortable 42-28 lead at the break, then use a 19-3 second half run to push the lead to 81-48 - leading by as many as 37 in the win.  Kelvin Potts had 16 points and five assists, with Jordan Stokes adding 15 points and five rebounds.  Steffen Spinks and Craig McGee each had 11, with Bryan Champ adding ten in the win.  The Hawks, who have lost all eight games against NAIA competition this year, got 18 points from reserve Eric Adams.

YOTES CRACK THE NAIA TOP-25: The C of I cracked the Top-25 in the first NAIA Division II Coaches Poll of the regular season, checking in at No. 23, as announced by the national office in Kansas City. Mo.  The Lady Yotes return to the Top-25 for the first time since the 2006-07, when they elevated as high as No. 24.  The C of I has been ranked as high as No. 4 in the poll, that coming during the 2000-01 season - in which they advanced to the national title game.  Three other CCC teams are in the poll - Southern Oregon climbed three spots to No. 16, while both Oregon Tech and Concordia received votes.  Two other C of I opponents were in their respective national polls - Westminster, ranked No. 15 in the NAIA Division I poll, and Holy Names, which received votes in the NAIA Division II poll.  The next poll will be released on Monday afternoon.

BEST START EVER: With an eight-game win streak (nine, if counting the exhibition win over Weber State), the Lady Yotes are off to their best in school history.  The squad has surged past the 1997-98 team that opened with a 7-1 record, sprinting out of the gates to a 13-2 mark on the season – ending with a trip to the NAIA Division II national tournament.

WIN STREAKING: The eight-game win streak marks the third time in program history that the Lady Yotes have won eight-or-more games in a row.  The school-record win streak is 13, set during the 1996-97 season, while the last time the Coyotes won more than eight-straight was during the 2006-07 campaign, when The C of I won nine in a row.

VANDER ESCH TIES NATIONAL RECORD: The Lady Yotes saw another name etched into the NAIA record books over the weekend, as Christon Vander Esch (Riggins, Idaho / Treasure Valley CC) set a new school and CCC record, tying the NAIA national mark for steals in a game with 15.  The senior had nine swipes in the first half, adding six more in the second half for her record total – all coming in just 23 minutes of action.  She previously had The C of I and CCC record of 11 steals, set also against Willamette, in 2006.  Vander Esch joins four others – Chanel Ross of Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) in 2007, Kathy Jean-Louis of Atlantic Union (Maine) in 1997, Amy Bible of Tusculum (Tenn.) in 1995, and Larissa Smith of Daemen (N.Y.) in 1993 in the 15-steal club.

MORE ON VANDER ESCH: For her efforts over the weekend, Vander Esch was named CCC Player of the Week for the second time in her career.  She averaged 20 points and seven rebounds per game in the two wins, to go along with her steals record.  Vander Esch also extended a pair of long streaks – she has now scored at least one point in 48-straight games, recorded a rebound in 58-straight games, a steal in 26-straight games, and a blocked shot in 15-straight games.  She is No. 2 on the all-time steals (191) and blocked shots (116) lists – needing just 14 steals to break the career school record.  Vander Esch is sixth all-time in free throws attempted (286), seventh all-time in free throws made (198), and tenth in rebounds (484) and field goal attempts (645) – closing in on the top ten in field goals made (244) and points scored (723).

ROSSI SETS WINS RECORD: C of I head coach Reagan Rossi took her spot atop the wins list in Lady Yote women’s basketball history with the victory Saturday against Linfield.  Rossi notched her 124th win of her career, moving past former coach and mentor, Todd Corman, into first-place.  In her eighth season, Rossi has a 124-97 career record, with Corman winning 123 games in his tenure from 1995-01 at The C of I.

GETTING DEFENSIVE: The Lady Yotes have turned up the defensive pressure over the last three games, holding their opponents to a combined 50 points per game, while holding the visitors to just 34-percent from the field and 22-percent from the three-point line.  Even more impressive is the turnover number, as The C of I has forced an average of 39 turnovers in their last three games.

ABOUT OREGON TECH: The Lady Yotes open up the 2008-09 CCC season against the two teams they finished last season against – first meeting Oregon Tech.  The Owls (7-2) have played nine preseason games – all against California Pacific conference teams – going 7-0 against squads with losing records (Simpson, William Jessup, Bethany, Pacific Union, Dominican), but 0-2 against teams with winning records (Holy Names, Menlo).  OIT is led by CCC Newcomer of the Year Amanda Johnston (12.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg), transfers Lisa Busch (13.3 ppg, 2.6 rpg, .510 3FG%) and Nicole Morgan (9.6 ppg, 8.0 rpg), and point-guard Meghan Miyasaka (5.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 6.3 apg).  The Lady Yotes swept three games from Tech last season – including their first-ever regular-season win in Klamath Falls, but still trail the all-time series, 9-7.

ABOUT SOUTHERN OREGON: A battle of nationally-ranked teams will headline the Saturday CCC games, as the Yotes travel to No. 16 Southern Oregon. The Raiders (7-0) are off to their best start in school history and take a 15-game home court win streak into the weekend.  SOU has a prolific offense that averages 84 points a game, hitting 47-percent of their field goal attempts and nearly 40-percent of their three’s, while outscoring opponents by 28 points a game.  CCC Preseason Player of the Year Jacki Speer (15.4 pgg, 7.1 rpg) has lived up to the hype, along with returning guards Whitney Scott (12.0 ppg, 5.6 apg) and Rhiannon Dickison (10.9 ppg, 3.0 rpg).  Southern has won the last four meetings, including an 82-72 overtime win in last year’s CCC Tournament title game.  SOU holds a 17-13 all-time series edge.

CCC LEADERS: Scoring Average – Kristina Schumacher (CAS) 27.0, Emily Gray (NCU) 18.6, Amy Russell (CAS) 17.0, Katie Steigleman (CRB) 16.8, Robin Swain (CAS) 16.7; Rebound Average – Maya Gross (CAS) 10.7, Russell 10.3, Rosiland Lee (ESC) 8.8, Christon Vander Esch (CI) 8.7, Gray 8.4; Field Goal Percentage – Callie McVicker (NCU) .718, Gross .613, Danielle Clauson (CU) .600, Haley Roth (CU) .559, Alyssa Garro (EOU) .556; Assist Average – Meagan Miyasaka (OIT) 6.3, Jenny Fiso (EOU) 5.6, Whitney Scott (SOU) 5.4, Swain 5.3, Kailey Bostwick (CRB) 4.2.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 84, WILLAMETTE 53: Christon Vander Esch set a school record with 15 steals, leading an incredible defensive effort by The C of I, who just missed the team record of 34 steals by one in an 84-53 rout of Willamette Friday night in the Best Western Caldwell Inn and Suites Lady Yote Classic.  Trailing 13-11, the Yotes full-court pressure wreaked havoc during a stretch of 4:53 where the Bearcats managed just one shot attempt.  The Yotes added five steals and two blocks during a 14-0 run capped by a Katee Brewer (Arco, Idaho / Butte County HS) steal and layup for a 25-13 lead.  But Willamette did whittle the lead down to 29-27 on a Kaileigh Westermann bucket and 33-30 after an Alex Zennan 3-pointer.  Helped by six triples, the Bearcats trailed just 43-34 at the break.  The Yotes corrected their shortcoming in the second half, giving up just 19 points, and put the game away early with the press as the Bearcats took just three shots in the first 3:54 of the half, a 13-2 Yote run that saw the C of I make six more steals and force three turnovers.  Katie Strunk (Shoshone, Idaho / Walla Walla CC) capped the run with a putback bucket for a 56-36 lead.  Vander Esch led the Yotes with 24 points, while Meghan Hughes (Eagle, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) netted 17 points and Nicole Bruce (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS0 11 in the win.

GAME RECAP – C OF I 87, LINFIELD 57: Nicole Gall (Boise, Idaho / Santa Clara U.) hit 4-of-5 three-pointers, notching a season-high 20 points, as The C of I completed a weekend sweep at the Best Western Caldwell Inn and Suites Lady Yote Classic, racing past Linfield College, 87-57.  After the Wildcats took a 15-13 lead on a Makenzie Blythe three at the 12-minute mark of the first half, the Lady Yotes responded, using a 13-0 run, keyed by triples from Gall and Katee Brewer, to take control - pushing the lead to 49-25 at the break and to as many as 36 in the second half.  Christon Vander Esch had 16 points and six rebounds in the win, with Katie Strunk adding 14 off the bench.  Linfield was led by the ten points from Kelsey Forrest.
