ATHLETIC NEWS:
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL RECAP NEXT WEEK: Look in next week’s Yote Notes for a
complete recap of the record-setting 2009 C of I women’s basketball season.
SCHOLAR-ATHLETES HONORED: Six C of I basketball players were
named to their respective Daktronics/NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete team,
announced at the conclusion of the national tournaments. On the women’s side, Christon Vander Esch, ShaNae
Horner, Kayla Brewer, and Katee Brewer were honored, while Londale Theus and Craig McGee were recipients for the men. To earn the award, a player must be of a
junior academic status and maintain a 3.50 cumulative GPA. For the year, the Coyotes have 27 national
scholar-athlete recipients.
ALL-AMERICA TEAMS: Three basketball players were named
to the NAIA All-America team in 2009.
Christon Vander Esch led the way, earning Second-Team honors – just the
second C of I player to earn the honor in program history, while Nicole Gall for the ladies and Craig
McGee for the men, were named as honorable mention selections.
MEN STRUGGLE, WOMEN PLAY WELL AT
CONCORDIA INVITE: The
C of I golf teams got back to competition Monday and Tuesday at the Concordia
Invitational at Tri-Mountain Golf Club in Ridgefield,
Wash. For the Coyote men, it was a struggle, as the
squad placed tenth out of ten teams – with just one round under 80 during the
two-day event. It was a different story
for the Lady Yotes, who placed fourth overall – just 26-strokes behind NCAA
Division I opponent, Seattle. Cecilia
Garcia (Ontario,
Ore. / Treasure Valley CC) was the top
Lady Yote, placing 12th, while Hannah
Maurer (Caldwell, Idaho
/ Vallivue HS) had the squad’s lowest score of the tournament with an 84.
TENNIS HEADS TO LEWISTON:
The C of I tennis
teams head north this weekend for regional matches in Lewiston.
The Lady Yotes (2-3) will square off against Southern
Oregon, Alberta, and Lewis-Clark State,
while the Coyotes (1-6) will battle both Alberta
and L-C State.
The Coyote men were in Lewiston last
weekend and found themselves on the short end of 9-0 decisions against Bethany
(Kan.) and
MSU-Billings.
MEN’S
SOCCER SIGNS NINE: Mountain View High senior Zach Richardson headlines the 2009
College of Idaho men’s soccer recruiting class, as head coach Brian Smith
unveiled nine new Coyotes for the upcoming season. Richardson, a 5-11 centerback, is a three-time
All-Southern Idaho Conference and 5A All-State selection, helping MVHS to the
2006 state championship and runner-up finishes in 2007 and 2008. He also helped his Boise Capitals Soccer Club
to three-consecutive state championships. Joining Richardson in the recruiting class are
midfielders Brian Buckingham and Zach Pulkinen, along with forwards Cesar
Aguirre and Matt Kelly. Buckingham was
the Idaho 5A
Player of the Year in 2006, then helped Walla Walla CC to a 33-7-5 record in
his two seasons, including the 2008 NWAACC championship. Pulkinen heads to The C of I from Minot, N.D.,
where he was an All-State selection at Magic City High. Aguirre comes to The C of I from North Idaho
College, where he was an
All-Region 18 selection last year – having scored eight goals in leading his
team to the regional title. Kelly was a
two-time All-State selection at Henley High in Klamath Falls, Ore.,
earning Conference Player of the Year honors as a junior and senior. Rounding out the class
are a pair of defenders – Parker Waddell of Meridian High and Taylor Allen of
Durango High in Las Vegas,
midfielder Stephen Franden of McCall-Donnelly High, and forward Carlos Gomez of
Centennial High. The Coyotes are coming off a 14-3-1 season and
Cascade Conference South Division championship.

BASEBALL (14-8, 13-2 NAIA West): Coyotes sit atop NAIA West North
Division, host surging Patten squad in weekend four-game set
LAST WEEK: vs. No. 16 British Columbia (L 8-3, W 4-2, W 4-2, W
6-5)
COMING UP: vs. Patten (DH),
Saturday, 1 p.m.; vs. Patten (DH), Sunday, 11 a.m.; at Central
Washington (DH), Tuesday, Noon (PT).
CARLSEN NAMED CCC PLAYER
OF THE WEEK: For his efforts in the series win against nationally-ranked British Columbia, senior Brad Carlsen (Reno, Nev. / Western Nevada CC) was named Cascade Conference
Player of the Week. The outfielder was
4-for-10 at the plate, including three walks – but made the most of his hits,
as Carlsen hit a three-run homer Saturday that provided the winning runs in a
4-2 win, then had a two-run single in Sunday’s 4-2 win. He is now hitting .358 on the season with
three homers and 20 RBI.
AREHART, BOTTARI THROW
WELL: The
series against UBC showcased a pair of quality performances by C of I arms – as
Jared Arehart (Idaho Falls, Idaho / Coll. of Southern Idaho) and Jake Bottari (Wells, Nev. / Western Nevada CC) each recorded W’s. Arehart was stellar for the third-consecutive
outing, throwing a complete-game four-hitter, allowing two earned runs and
fanning five – dropping his team-leading opponents’ average to .183.. Bottari kept UBC off-balance for seven
innings, allowing just three hits and worked around five walks – as the T-Birds
managed just one run against the righty.
DOUGLAS PROVIDES A SPARK:
Looking
to work his way into the line-up, transfer Kyle
Douglas (Post
Falls, Idaho / Lewis-Clark State)
continued to swing a hot stick against UBC.
The sophomore had five hits in seven at bats, knocking in three runs –
as his batting average climbed to a team-high .448.
O-B PROVIDES BIG HIT; The Yotes got a big hit
on Sunday afternoon to give themselves a two-game lead in the NAIA West North
Division standings, as Alex O’Brien (Everett, Wash. / Everett CC) rapped a
pinch-hit two-run double to cap a six-run rally. The senior had an up and down series, going
4-for-6 on Saturday – including three hits in the Game 1 loss, then striking
out a pair of times on Sunday. However,
skipper Shawn Humberger called the
right shot in the finale, as O-B lined a pitch right over the third-base bag
for the eventual game-winner.
MCGRADY SETS RECORD FOR
BRUISES: The
most painful record in all of baseball was broken on Saturday by Coyote Dane McGrady (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS), as the senior set the
career school-record for hit by pitches.
McGrady was plunked three times during the series, giving him ten HBP’s
this season, and a staggering 59 for his career, three more than Darren Uranga
had for the Yotes from 2000-03. McGrady
has one of the stranger stat lines on the team – hitting just .200, but has a
.548 on-base percentage.
A LAUNCHING PAD?: in the first 11 games
played at Wolfe Field, it has been apparent, despite chilly temperatures, that
the ball will fly out of the Coyotes new home park. At least one home run has been hit in nine of
the 11 games, a total of 15 long balls overall.
In comparison, in 21 home games at Simplot Stadium last year, the Yotes
and their opponents combined for just 14 total round-trippers.
YOTES PERFECT IN SEVEN
INNING GAMES: An interesting statistic for the Coyotes in 2009 comes from the
change in doubleheaders in the NAIA West.
The Yotes have taken full advantage of every Game 2 doubleheader being
seven innings this season, as The C of I is a perfect 9-0 in seven inning
games.
DESPITE LOSSES, UBC TOPS
NAIA WEST POLL: Although the Coyotes have the best record in NAIA West play (13-2)
and hold a two-game lead in the North Division standings, The C of I does not
hold the top spot in the latest NAIA West baseball poll. British
Columbia maintains the top spot, followed by the
Yotes, Cal State-San Marcos, Oregon Tech, and Corban. In the NAIA Top-25 poll, Lubbock Christian (Texas) sits atop the poll, followed by Oklahoma
City, Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.),
Southern Poly (La.),
and Louisiana State-Shreveport. UBC
dropped two spots to No. 16, while the Yotes received 86 voter points – the
third-highest total among teams in the Others Receiving Votes category. The NAIA West poll is released each Monday
afternoon, with the national poll released on Tuesday afternoons.
SURGING PATTEN MAKES
FIRST TRIP TO CALDWELL: The hottest team in the NAIA West heads to Wolfe Field this
weekend, as Patten University makes
their first-ever trip to Canyon County.
The Lions (11-15, 9-7) sit one-game out of first in the South Division,
thanks to an eight-game win streak – having swept consecutive four-game series’
from Bethany and Simpson. The offensive
attack for the Lions is led by Jeremy Wells (.438 3 HR 18 RBI) and Jermaine
Collins (.356 7 HR 18 RBI), while the pitching staff has been paced by Phillip
Gonzales (3-0 2.81 ERA) and Chris Duke (3-4 5.98 ERA), with Graig Whelan (2-1
6.28) coming off Patten’s first ever no-hitter, as he blanked Simpson. The two teams have met once before, with the
Lions topping the Yotes, 8-5, earlier this season in Lewiston.
TUESDAY TWINBILL AT
CENTRAL: The
Yotes will hit the road right after the game Sunday, traveling for a Monday
doubleheader at Central
Washington. The
Division II Wildcats (6-14) will be coming off a road series with Western
Oregon, hoping to get quality performances from hurlers Chris Jackson (1-4 6.84
ERA) and Derek Shoemaker (3-3 4.64 ERA).
Infielders Kevin Schneider (.353 1 HR 4 RBI), Jordan Slesk (.345 2 HR 7
RBI), and Frank Donangelo (.315 12 RBI), along with outfielder A.J. Gosney (.343
9 RBI) lead the Central attack. The two
teams split a doubleheader last season in Caldwell,
but it’s the Yotes who lead the all-time series, 42-13.
GAME RECAP – SATURDAY
VS. UBC: Brad
Carlsen hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, helping The
C of I to a split with British Columbia, losing the opener, 8-3, but winning
the nightcap, 4-2, at Wolfe Field. After
Jon Syrnyk put then No. 14 ranked UBC up in the top of the sixth with a
towering home run, back-to-back singles by Cody
Brubaker (Post Falls, Idaho / Spokane
Falls CC) and Diego Robles (Caldwell, Idaho / Tacoma CC) set the
table for Carlsen, who crushed a 2-1 Taylor King pitch over the
right-centerfield wall for the winning runs.
Jared Arehart got the win for the Coyotes, allowing just four hits and
striking out five, with Brubaker and Carslen each with two hits. In the opener, Scott Webster got the T-Birds
on the board with a solo homer in the fifth, with Ben Pilgrim adding a two-run
single in the sixth to make it 3-0. UBC would tack on five runs in the seventh,
including a grand slam homer from Syrnyk.
Mark Hardy was dominant in the win, throwing seven shutout innings
without a walk and ten strikeouts.
GAME RECAP – SUNDAY VS. UBC:
Alex O'Brien's two-out, pinch hit two-run double
in the bottom of the sixth inning capped a six-run rally, as The C of I swept a
doubleheader from UBC, 4-2 and 6-5, at Wolfe Field. With the wins, the Coyotes moved two games
ahead of the then No.14 ranked Thunderbirds in the NAIA West standings. Trailing 5-0 in the sixth of a seven inning
Game 2, the Yotes sent 11-men to the plate. Izaac Garsez (Caldwell, Idaho
/ Caldwell HS) walked with the bases loaded to get the Yotes on the board,
and after a fielders choice scored a second run, Kyle Douglas roped a two-run
single to center to pull C of I within a run. Following a walk, O'Brien
hit a 1-2 pitch down the left field line to give the Yotes the lead. Chad Yeggy (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) made it stand up,
striking out Jon Syrnyk with two on to close out the win. Douglas went 3-for-4 for the Yotes, while Alex White and
Greg Densem each had two hits for the T-Birds.
UBC jumped out to the early lead with a three-run second, thanks to two
C of I errors. They'd tack on single runs in the third and fourth,
including a Bob Foerester solo home run.
Game 1 saw the Yotes break a scoreless tie in the fourth on a Brad
Carlsen two-run single, and after UBC cut the lead in half on a Ben Torrie
sacrifice fly, added two more in the fifth on a Dane McGrady RBI double and a
Douglas RBI single. Jake Bottari and Ben Rosen (Eagle River, Alaska
/ Lower Columbia CC) made it stand up,
limiting UBC to just five hits. Bottari went seven innings allowing just
three hits, with Rosen recording the final six outs for his first save. Torrie had two hits for the T-Birds, while Douglas went 2-for-3 for the Yotes.

2009 season marks the 22nd year in C of I baseball for head coach Shawn

SOFTBALL (8-9): Lady Yotes take
four-game win streak on the road to open CCC play at Northwest Christian
LAST WEEK: vs. Northwest Nazarene (W 6-1, W 3-1), vs. Simpson (W
6-4, W 5-4)
COMING UP: at Northwest Christian (DH), Friday, 2 p.m.; vs. Eastern Oregon (DH), Tuesday, 3 p.m.
DIXON NAMED
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: After hitting .500 for the week, including three home runs, C of I first
baseman Heather
Dixon (Boise, Idaho / Idaho State U.) was
named Cascade Conference Player of the Week.
The senior had a pair of home runs in the doubleheader sweep of
Northwest Nazarene, then hit a walk-off three-run home run to win Game 1 Sunday
against Simpson. Overall, Dixon was 6-for-12 with
eight RBI – helping her batting average rise to .327. Over her last nine games, she is 13-for-28
(.467), with four home runs and ten RBI.
JUDY NAMED PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Also earning CCC weekly honors was Brooke Judy (Kuna, Idaho
/ Kuna HS), who was named CCC Pitcher of the Week. The junior went 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA – picking
up relief wins against Simpson, and allowing just one run on three hits in a
victory over Northwest Nazarene.
SMITTY STARTS TO HEAT UP: Battling out of a year-long hitting
slump, senior outfielder Stacy Smith (Draper, Utah
/ Juan Diego HS) showed glimpses of her 2007 form over the weekend
that earned her All-Region I honors.
Smith went 4-for-10 with a pair of RBI, including an opposite field
double against Simpson.
WALK-OFF HOMERS: The three-run homer by Heather Dixon
against Simpson was the fourth walk-off home run in program history. The first was hit by Stacy Smith on April 1,
2006 against Southern Oregon in a 6-4 win,
with Nicole Illias launching a solo shot to top Northwest Nazarene on April 26,
2006. The third was by Amy Rhoades (Eagle, Idaho
/ Dixie State Coll.) on April 14,
2007 to cap a 12-run inning to top Corban, 12-4.
ALL-TIME AT HOME: In the first seven-plus years of the
fastpitch program at The C of I, the Lady Yotes have a combined record of 72-67
at Symms Field. However, over the past
two seasons, the Coyotes have had a substantial home field advantage, winning
36-of-48 games on their home diamond.
COYOTES STILL THIRD IN CCC POLL, RECEIVE VOTE IN
NAIA POLL: For
the third-straight week, the Lady Yotes were ranked third in the CCC Coaches’
Poll, released Monday afternoon.
Concordia holds onto the top spot, followed by Oregon Tech, the Lady
Yotes, and Corban. In the NAIA Top-25
Poll, Cal Baptist claimed the top-spot this week, followed by Oklahoma
City, Point Loma Nazarene, St. Gregory’s, and Dickinson State. Concordia is ranked No. 14 in the poll, while
Oregon Tech received three rater points, and the Coyotes one rater point in the
poll. The NAIA poll is released each
Tuesday afternoon for the remainder of the season.
ABOUT NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN: The Lady Yotes open up the 24-game
CCC schedule this weekend, traveling to Eugene,
Ore., for a doubleheader at Northwest Christian. The Beacons (5-2) were picked to finish in
the cellar in the CCC preseason poll, but are off to a great start – with wins
against Division III foes Whitworth, Pacific Lutheran, George Fox, and Lewis
& Clark, teams with a combined record of 17-51. NCU can hit the longball – as the Beacons
have cranked 15 home runs in their seven games, with Brittany Robles (.522 2 HR
5 RBI) and Brooke Davis (.522 5 HR 11 RBI) doing the damage. Davis
(3-1 2.08 ERA, 44 K) is also NCU’s top pitcher, having thrown 33 of the 48
innings this spring. The two teams have
met 15 previous times, with the Lady Yotes holding a 10-5 series edge,
including winning three of four last season.
ABOUT EASTERN OREGON: Tuesday, I-84 rival Eastern Oregon heads
to Caldwell for
their annual doubleheader with the Coyotes.
The 2009 Mountaineers (2-10) head into the weekend mired in an
eight-game losing streak – including doubleheader sweeps at the hands of Utah Valley,
Northwest Nazarene, and Simpson. The
Yotes must contain EOU slugger Megan Platz (.429 8 HR 18 RBI), along with Kassi
Reisebeck (.422), while the Mounties pitching staff, which is led by Suzie
Espinoza (2-3 4.25 ERA) must hold opponents in check – having allowed opponents
a .336 batting average this season. The
teams have met 39 times, with EOU holding a 27-12 series edge – with last
season’s series split at two games apiece.
CCC STATS: Team Batting – Corban .319, Concordia .304, Northwest

ABOUT THE COACH: Al Mendiola is in his fourth
year as head coach of The C of I softball program, having compiled an 91-66
career record – having won more games than any other softball coach in Coyote
history. The native of San Diego, Calif.
has helped the Lady Yotes become a force in Northwest softball, leading The C
of I to three consecutive playoff appearances, including the 2007 Cascade
Conference championship, the 2008 NAIA Region I championship, and a berth in
the 2008 NAIA Women's World Series.
Following the 2007 season, Mendiola was honored as CCC and NAIA Region I
Coach of the Year after the Coyotes set a school record with 37 wins. Under his direction, the Yotes have been
ranked as high as No. 14 in the NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll.
Outside of softball, Mendiola was the head coach of the Caldwell
Silver Streaks American Legion baseball team from 1997-07 and has also assisted
with the Boise Clippers men's fastpitch team.
He was also an assistant coach for The C of I baseball team for seven
years. A 1994 graduate of The C of I,
Mendiola played two seasons of baseball for head coach Tim Mooney, earning
honorable mention NAIA All-America honors as a senior.
GAME RECAP: C
OF I VS. NNU - Heather Dixon hit a pair of home runs and three pitchers
combined to allow just two runs on the afternoon, as The C of I swept a
softball doubleheader from Northwest Nazarene, winning 6-1 and 3-1, at Symms
Field. In the opener, Dixon broke open a tight game in the fifth
inning, launching a three-run homer over the centerfield wall to give the Lady
Yotes a 4-0 lead. The senior transfer also added a long solo homer in the
nightcap, as the Yotes ended a four-game losing streak. Jody Zillner (Emmett,
Idaho / Coll. of Southern
Idaho) was dominant in Game 1, allowing just two hits
and an unearned run in picking up her fifth win of the season. Zillner
struck out a season-high 11 batters and helped her own cause with a two-run
homer in the fifth inning to cap the Coyotes scoring. Amy Rhoades went 2-for-4 with a run scored
for the Coyotes, while Haley Hevern had both NNU hits, including a double. The nightcap saw the Yotes take the lead in
the second on a Kristen Haugen (Salem, Ore. / South Salem HS) bases
loaded sacrifice fly, then added an unearned run on the play when an errant
throw allowed Stacy Smith to score. Dixon
would add her second homer of the day in the third, a solo shot, to make it
3-0, before the Crusaders got on the board in the fourth on a solo homer from
Arielle Chao. Brooke Judy got the win,
allowing just three hits and a run in her five innings of work, fanning four,
with Donnae
Carrell (Caldwell, Idaho / Middleton HS) getting the final six outs
for her first save. Haley Butcher
(Eagle, Idaho /
Eagle HS) had two hits for the Lady Yotes in Game 2, while six
different NNU hitters recording one hit.
GAME RECAP: C
OF I VS. SIMPSON - Heather Dixon hit a walk-off three-run homer to win Game 1
and Dani
Villyard (Kent, Wash. / Kentlake HS) had a walk-off bases loaded
walk to win Game 2, as The C of I swept a doubleheader with Simpson University,
winning 6-4 and 5-4, Sunday at Symms Field.
After a Nicki Feuerbach RBI single in the top of the seventh gave the
Redhawks a 4-3 lead, the Coyotes fought back. Amaia Enrico
(Boise, Idaho
/ Bishop Kelly HS) led off with a walk, with Amy Rhoades reaching
on a fielders choice after Simpson was unable to get an out at second. Dixon, who had an RBI
single in the fifth inning, hit the first pitch from Trinity Cuff over the left
field wall for the fourth walk-off homer in program history. Brooke Judy picked up with win in relief for
the Lady Yotes (8-9), with Dixon
going 2-for-4, while Danielle Cristoso and Candice Valerga each recording two
hits for Simpson. Game 2 saw the
Redhawks get a Stefanie Singh RBI double in the first to take the lead, but the
Coyotes tied it in the second on a Nikki Shumway (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS) RBI
triple. Simpson would plate a single run in the third and Valerga added a
solo homer in the fourth to make it 3-1. However, a Kalie Kurdy
(Boise, Idaho
/ Bishop Kelly HS) RBI double and a Stacy Smith RBI single in the
bottom of the fourth tied the game at 3-3.
Simpson would take the lead in the sixth on a Valerie Rodriguez RBI
double, but Kurdy knotted the game for a third time in the bottom of the inning
with a two-out RBI single. The Coyotes would win it again in their final
at bat, as Donnae Carrell walked and Rhoades legged out a two-out infield
single. The Redhawks would intentionally walk Dixon to get to Villayard, who took a 3-2
pitch up high to end the game. Kurdy, Dixon, and Smith all had
two hits for the Yotes, with Judy picking up the win in relief, while Sylvia
Parker notching two hits in the loss for Simpson.
