ATHLETIC NEWS:

MEN’S SWIM TEAM EARNS NAIA CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER AWARD: Although the award was announced nearly two months ago at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships, it was released to the media last week that The C of I men’s swim team was honored with the NAIA Champions of Character Team Award.  The award, which embodies the five-core character values the NAIA embraces – Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership, and Sportsmanship, is given to one team per sport at each NAIA national championship.  The Coyotes won the award because of their involvement in civic endeavors around the City of Caldwell, along with a service trip to Mexico, in which they helped build houses for those in need.  Mills College of California earned the Women’s Swimming Champions of Character award.

41 C OF I STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED TO CCC ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM: The College of Idaho spring sports squads dominated the Cascade Conference All-Academic Team selections – as 41 student-athletes earned the award.  To earn the award, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic status and maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average.  The Yotes set a new league record during the 2008-09 academic year, as a total of 75 recipients won the award.  Baseball (9) - Matthew Conner, Jordan Lanman, Jason Barry, Jake Bottari, Bryan Champ, Perry Hamilton, Luke Howarth, Dane McGrady, and Alex O'Brien.  Golf (6) - Ben Coate, Kurt Nielson, Colin Slaughter, James Taylor, Cris Tietsort, and Erica Sheppard.  Softball (4) - Haley Butcher, Katy Luetke, Brooke Judy, and Ashley Wolff.  Track (22) - Stephanie Helm, Maggie Miller, Tricia Randazzo, Jena Sherrick, Colleen Smith, Kristine Smith, Nikki Watson, Alex Hughes, Molli Lee-Painter, Emily McCutchan, Courtney Mitchell, Stephanie Sparks, Chantel Varland, Jayne Saunders, Tegan Troutner, Paul Sartin, Jude Penaflor, Geoff Williams, Rich Hatch, Sam Hardy, Rand Kline, and Oliver Rosales.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SIGNS TWO RECRUITS: College of Idaho women's basketball coach Reagan Rossi announced today the signing of a pair of high school players to NAIA Letters of Intent as the initial recruits for the 2009-10 season.  Headed to play for the reigning Cascade Conference co-champions are Brette Rubie of Missoula, Mont., and Katelin Shannon of Caldwell, Idaho.  Rubie, a 5-7 wing, helped Missoula-Sentinel High to a sixth-place finish at the AA State Tournament this winter.  She was honored as an All-Western AA and AA All-State selection following the season.  Shannon, a 5-4 guard, was a four-year member of the varsity team at Vallivue High, helping her squad to the 2006 4A state championship, the 2007 5A state semifinals, the 2008 5A state championship game, and a fourth-place finish in 2009.  She was an All-Southern Idaho Conference selection and named to the All-SIC Academic Team.  The Lady Yotes are coming off a school record-setting 29-5 season and a trip to the NAIA Division II National Tournament.

INTERNET BROADCAST SCHEDULE: All games involving British Columbia will be carried online via http://www.777online.com/ubc/modules/mediaManager/export.php, while all Oregon Tech games will be carried online at http://asx.abacast.com/nnbkfalls-kkjx-64.asx.

A STAPLE IN THE POSTSEASON: The Coyotes will make their 23rd consecutive postseason appearance – dating back to the return of the program in 1987.  The Yotes have advanced to four NAIA World Series’, including a third-place finish in 2002, a runner-up finish in 1999, and the 1998 National Championship.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: Two teams clinched automatic spots in the NAIA West Tournament – North Division champ British Columbia and South Division champ, Oregon Tech.  The remaining two teams were determined by the final NAIA West Coaches Poll, which had the Coyotes in second and Cal State-San Marcos in third – rounding out the four-team field.  The winner of the four-team tournament will earn one of the 31 automatic berths to the NAIA Tournament.  A total of 24 conference or groupings will earn automatic spots – with seven conferences (Appalachian, Chicagoland, Golden State, Great Plains, Heart of America, Red River, Sooner, and Southern States) earning two berths.  The remaining 14 berths will be determined via the final national poll on May 8.  The winners of the nine sectional tournaments will join host Lewis-Clark State in the Avista NAIA World Series in Lewiston beginning Memorial Day weekend.

REGION I TOURNAMENT AT “THE NAT”: For the fifth time in the last seven years, the NAIA West Tournament (formally the Far West Regional and NAIA Region I Tournament) will be held at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver, B.C.  “The Nat” is a 7,000-seat park that is home of the Class A Vancouver Canadians, along with the University of British Columbia.  UBC previously hosted the regional tournament in 2003, 2005, and 2006 – winning the title each time, and in 2008, where they finished third.

PAST CHAMPIONS: This is the tenth year of the current four-team format, with five different teams capturing title: 2000 – C of I, 2001 – Western Oregon, 2002- C of I, 2003 – UBC, 2004 – Concordia, 2005 – UBC, 2006 – UBC, 2007 – Lewis-Clark State, 2008 – Lewis-Clark State.

ABOUT CAL STATE-SAN MARCOS: The Coyotes will open up the tournament Monday against NAIA Independent Cal State-San Marcos.  The Cougars (25-14) did not compete in the NAIA West round-robin, instead playing 23 of their 37 games during midweek times against California schools – most of which were throwing their bullpens.  CSU-SM has quality wins against Point Loma Nazarene, The Masters, and Azusa Pacific, while taking 3-of-4 from Oregon Tech.  Offensively, they are paced by sluggers James Scott (.434 17 HR 44 RBI), Austin Coleman (.404 6 HR 48 RBI), Dane Ponciano (.345 10 HR 40 RBI), and Scott Clement (.336 12 HR 43 RBI), while on the mound, Johnny Holtman (6-2 4.79 ERA) and Travis McCracken (5-4 5.00 ERA) have been their top starters.  It is the Cougars first post-season appearance and first game against the Coyotes.

ABOUT OREGON TECH: On the other side of the bracket is South Division champion, Oregon Tech.  The Owls (32-23) are in the midst of their best season in program history, already eclipsing the school record for wins – which compiling a 24-8 league mark.  Matt Miles’ squad is led at the plate by Ryson Mauricio (.365 14 HR 65 RBI), Lee Eklund (.343 0 HR 32 RBI), and Zach Earle (.313 9 HR 42 RBI), while the pitching staff is anchored by Neil Emerson (6-3 2.79 ERA), Josh Strom (8-4 3.32 ERA), and Chad Trevisan (6-4. 5.50 ERA).  It is the first playoff appearance by OIT since the 2006 season.  The Coyotes and Tech have met 71 times in the past, with The C of I holding a 60-11 all-time series edge.

ABOUT BRITISH COLUMBIA: North Division champion British Columbia rounds out the field, coming off a wild three-game series with Lewis-Clark State.  The No. 14 ranked Thunderbirds (33-10) dropped 18-4 and 3-2 decisions to L-C on Sunday, but scored 11 runs in the first inning of an 11-2 win on Monday afternoon.  The question mark will be the pitching staff, as ace Mark Hardy (10-1 2.97 ERA) had to leave Sunday’s first game with tightness in his bicep – putting pressure on right-handers Taylor King (7-1 2.91 ERA) and Eric Brown (4-2 2.52 ERA).  Offensively, 6-7 lefty Scott Webster (.346 2 HR 24 RBI) has hit well of late, as has Ryan Pilgrim (.358 1 HR 34 RBI) and Jon Syrnyk (.331 7 HR 37 RBI).  The Yotes and UBC have split eight games this season, with the T-Birds holding a 48-39 all-time series edge – although The C of I has won the past two postseason contests between the clubs.

25-WIN SEASON STREAK EXTENDED: With a win over British Columbia on April 26, the Coyotes extended their streak of consecutive 25-win seasons to 23.  The Yotes have won at least 25 games in every season since baseball returned to the College in 1987.

MOST HOME RUNS SINCE 2001: The Coyotes hit a pair of home runs in the series with Corban, pushing the 2009 season total of long balls to 37.  This season’s total has already surpassed the entire home run count from the 2003 (29), 2004 (17), 2005 (20), 2006 (11), 2007 (16), and 2008 (23) seasons, and equals the total from 2002.  In all, eleven different Coyotes have hit homers in 2009.

FINAL HOME RUN NUMBERS AT WOLFE FIELD?: With the first year of competition completed at Wolfe Field, it has been apparent, despite the windy and chilly temperatures, that the ball will fly out of the Coyotes new home park.  At least one home run was been hit in 19 of the 23 games, a total of 34 long balls overall.  In comparison, in 21 home games at Simplot Stadium last year, the Yotes and their opponents combined for just 14 total round-trippers.

TOUGH STRETCH COSTS YOTES AN AUTOMATIC PLAYOFF BERTH: Heading into the L-C series, the Coyotes had been ranked as high as No. 23 in the NAIA poll and were sitting at No. 28 last week.  However, by going 4-8 over the final three weeks of the season, the Yotes are out of the NAIA poll entirely for the second-straight week.  This is unfortunate, as 45 teams will comprise the NAIA National Tournament – with nine five-team sites to be announced in early May.  At their previous position, the Yotes, regardless of their finish at the NAIA West Tournament, would have been in position to secure their first berth to Nationals since 2002.  Currently, the Yotes will have to win the NAIA West Tournament to secure a berth.

RECORD BOOK: As the regular-season concluded, the Coyotes have three players that have cracked the single-season and career record books.  Dane McGrady (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) ranks sixth on the single-season list for hit by pitches (18), while already established the new career record in hit by pitches with 67.  Andrew Brock (Burnaby, B.C. / Douglas CC) is in the career pitching Top-10 in two categories – No. 4 in starts (30) and No. 5 in innings pitched (217.2), while Luke Howarth (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) is in the career hitting Top-10 in three categories – No. 6 in sacrifice hits (18), and No. 9 in both games played (187) and stolen bases (43).

ABOUT THE COACH: The 2009 season marks the 22nd year in C of I baseball for head coach Shawn Humberger, his ninth year as Coyote skipper.  During his tenure, Humberger has compiled a 294-201-1 record, including a third-place finish at the 2002 NAIA College World Series.  He has been named CCC Baseball Coach of the Year in 2002, 2005, 2006. 2007, and 2008, along with earning NAIA Region I Coach-of-the-Year and CCC Men's Coach-of-the-Year for all-sports in 2002.  A native of Twin Falls, Humberger graduated from Twin Falls High, played for the College of Southern Idaho for two seasons, and played at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas for one year.  In 1984, Humberger was part of the CSI national championship junior-college team.  In addition, he was named to the 1985 Junior College All-America team.  Humberger, a 1989 C of I graduate, also served as the facilities coordinator for the J.A. Albertson Activities Center for ten years and is a physical education instructor at the College,

SOFTBALL (29-16): NAIA Women’s World Series berth on the line Friday at Southern Oregon

LAST WEEK: vs. Corban (W 6-1, W 6-0), vs. Concordia (W 7-1, W 6-5), at Northwest Nazarene (W 6-0, L 4-0)

COMING UP: at Southern Oregon (DH), Friday, 2 p.m. PT, at Oregon Tech (DH), Saturday, 11 a.m. PT

ON THE INTERNET: Saturday’s doubleheader at Oregon Tech will be broadcast live in the Klamath Basin on KLAD 960-AM with Mike Garrard calling the action.  C of I fans can listen to the broadcast online via http://asx.abacast.com/nnbkfalls-kkjx-64.asx.

ZILLNER CONTINUES DOMINANCE OF WEEKLY HONOR: For the third-straight week, College of Idaho right-hander Jody Zillner (Emmett, Idaho / Coll. of Southern Idaho) was named Cascade Conference Pitcher of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.  The junior was lights-out in five appearances, going 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA, striking out 35 batters in 28 innings of work.  Over the past three weeks, Zillner has been phenomenal, going 10-0 with a 0.97 ERA – helping the Lady Yotes climb into first-place in the CCC.

SMITH WINS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: For the third time in her career, outfielder Stacy Smith (Draper, Utah / Juan Diego HS) was named CCC Player of the Week.  The senior hit safely in all six games last week for the Coyotes, going 8-for-13 at the plate, with three doubles, four stolen bases, five runs scored, and three RBI.  With a pair of hits Tuesday against Northwest Nazarene, Smith currently has a career-high nine-game hitting streak.

WIN OVER SOUTHERN EQUALS TRIP TO ALABAMA: Only two teams remain in the picture for the CCC championship with four games left in the regular season – the Lady Yotes and Southern Oregon.  The C of I holds a two-game lead on the Raiders heading into Friday’s showdown in Ashland, needing one win over SOU to clinch at least a share of the CCC title – and the head-to-head tiebreak over their rivals.  A Southern sweep would put the Raiders in the drivers seat – as SOU would hold every tiebreaker over the Coyotes.  The CCC regular-season champion will earn an automatic berth to the NAIA Women’s World Series in Decatur, Ala.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: With the new direct-qualification model that the NAIA has embraced, the postseason picture has changed as well.  Instead of a 20-team national tournament, the field has been expanded to 32 teams – 25 automatic berths (coming from 24 conferences and scheduling groups) and seven at-large spots.  At the Women’s World Series, teams will be split into eight pools of four, with the eight pool winners moving into the double-elimination bracket.  With no CCC Tournament in 2009, the regular-season champion will earn the automatic berth to Nationals.

THREE STRAIGHT 28-WIN SEASONS: With a win in Game 2 Saturday against Concordia, the Lady Yotes secured their third-straight season with 28-or-more wins.  During the first five years of the program, the Coyotes had just one winning season and never won more than 18 games in a single year.  However, in 2007, the squad went 37-12 and last year, the Lady Yotes completed a 28-20 campaign.

LADY YOTES GO 18-4 AT HOME: With their home schedule complete, the Lady Yotes equaled their best home record ever – going 18-4 at Symms Field, including ten-straight CCC wins.  Over the first eight years of the fastpitch program at The C of I, the Lady Yotes have a combined record of 86-69 at Symms Field.  However, over the past three seasons, the Coyotes have had a substantial home field advantage, winning 68-of-86 games on their home diamond.

CANYON COUNTY CROWN REMAINS IN CALDWELL: With their 6-0 victory over Northwest Nazarene on Tuesday, the Lady Yotes claimed the season-series with their Canyon County rivals for the eighth-straight season.  The C of I has never lost the season series to their NCAA Division II counterparts, having won 31 of the 40 career match-up with the Crusaders.

C OF I CONTINUES TO TOP CCC POLL, CAN’T CRACK TOP-25: Despite a perfect 6-0 week, including a sweep of once No. 14 Concordia, The C of I still cannot crack the NAIA Top-25.  The Lady Yotes, who outpointed Southern Oregon and Concordia in the CCC poll, were the second team listed in the Others Receiving Votes category, claiming 78 voter points – their highest spot in the poll since being ranked No. 22 in April of 2008.  Cal Baptist, whom the Yotes dropped a 4-1 decision to in February, is No. 1, followed by Lubbock Christian, Dickinson State, Point Loma Nazarene, and William Carey, Two other C of I opponents are in the Top-25 – No. 14 Concordia-Irvine and No. 22 Cal State-San Marcos.  One fjnal national poll will be released on May 5 – to determine the seven at-large berths to the NAIA Women’s World Series.

DIXON TIED FOR CCC RECORD FOR HOME RUNS: With her first multi home run game of the season, first-baseman Heather Dixon (Boise, Idaho / Idaho State U.) has moved into elite status for her power numbers.  The senior has hit 16 home runs this year – already a C of I record, but has tied the CCC record for round-trippers in a year.  Oregon Tech sluggers Amanda Doherty and Meagan Webber each hit 16 home runs in a season, while Eastern Oregon’s Megan Platz hit 14 long-balls last year.  Tanisha Busch of Southern Oregon and Sabra Gamel of Corban have each hit 11 in a year, as has the Yotes Stacy Smith.  Dixon is ranked third in the NAIA in home runs per game, while sitting in fourth for overall home runs.

CAREER RECORDS: A total of ten Lady Yotes have their names etched in the career Top-10 at The C of I.  Leading the way is Haley Butcher, who holds the top spot in hits (167), doubles (36), at bats (509), and games started (177), is No. 2 in RBI (89), games played (179), and runs scored (99), No. 4 in triples (3), No. 5 in home runs (8) and hit by pitches (9), No. 6 in walks (32), and No. 8 in stolen bases (18).  Stacy Smith ranks among the leaders in ten categories – No. 1 in RBI (100), home runs (24), games played (180), and hit by pitches (23), No. 2 in doubles (32), at bats (469), and hits (149), No. 4 in runs scored (79), and No. 5 in triples (2), and games started (167).  Brooke Judy (Kuna, Idaho / Kuna HS) is second all-time in wins (34), innings pitched (363.1), saves (2), and shutouts (6), No. 3 in appearances (74), No. 4 in strikeouts (201), starts (49), and complete games (21), and is No. 5 in walks (87).  Jody Zillner is second all-time in shutouts (6) and strikeouts (214), No. 3 in complete games (22), No. 4 in wins (18), No. 6 in starts (23), innings pitched (181), and appearances (32), No. 7 in walks (55), and is No. 8 offensively in home runs (5).  Amy Rhoades (Eagle, Idaho / Dixie State Coll.) ranks fifth in sacrifice hits (17) and doubles (22), No. 6 in home runs (7), No. 8 in runs scored (56), and No. 9 in RBI (48), walks (25), and hits (80), with Dani Villyard (Kent, Wash. / Kentlake HS) ranks third in home runs (9), is eighth in RBI (50), No. 10 in hits (76), and No. 11 in doubles (12).  Four others round out the list – Heather Dixon is No. 2 in home runs (16) and No. 10 in RBI (39); Donnae Carrell (Caldwell, Idaho / Middleton HS) is No. 7 in home runs (6) and No. 8 in walks (29); Stephanie Stover (Caldwell, Idaho / U. of Nevada) is fifth in triples (2) and No. 6 in sacrifice hits (12); with Katy Luetke (Yreka, Calif. / Mendocino CC) is No. 5 in triples (2).

SEASON RECORDS: Six Lady Yotes have already worked themselves into the single-season Top-10 list in 2009.  Jody Zillner leads the way – having already tied the mark for wins in a season (18).  She is on pace to set a new mark for ERA (1.12), is No. 2 in complete games (22), decisions (25), innings pitched (181), appearances (32), and strikeouts (214), while No. 4 in starts (23), and is No. 5 offensively in home runs (5).  Brooke Judy ranks in six categories – No. 5 in wins (11), No. 7 in complete games (9), starts (19), and strikeouts (74), is No. 8 in decisions (19), and No. 10 in innings pitched (106.2).  Heather Dixon holds the record for home runs (16), is No. 3 in RBI (39), sixth in runs scored (29), and ninth in at bats (132), with three others are on the list twice – Amy Rhoades, who is No. 3 in doubles (12) and No. 7 in sacrifice hits (8), Stacy Smith is No. 1 in hit by pitches (8) and No. 9 in doubles (9), and Kalie Kurdy (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) is No. 8 in put outs (221) and No. 10 in chances (235).  As a team, the Lady Yotes have tied the school record with eight shutouts this season.

SOUTHERN OREGON LOOKING FOR REVENGE: The CCC title is on the line Friday at University Field in Ashland, as Southern Oregon looks to rebound after a pair of lopsided losses to the Yotes in Caldwell.  The Raiders (19-14, 15-5 CCC) have won six of their last eight games after a tough 2-9 start, thanks to freshman phenom Jordyn Kurtz (.364 1 HR 22 RBI; 18-13 2.40 ERA), who has been  a catalyst for Kim Fritts’ club at the plate and in the circle.  Kurtz will likely pitch both games, as she has tossed 189 of the 213 innings played by SOU this season.  A key for the Yotes is to keep speedy leadoff hitter Strohm Fouty (.462 1 HR 8 RBI) off the bases – as she leads the league with 35 stolen bases, with Meghan Laughlin (.448 1 HR 29 RBI) one of the top hitters in the league.  Despite the two wins earlier this season, the Coyotes trail the all-time series with Southern, 22-13.

AT SOU UNDER MENDIOLA: The Coyotes have history working against them heading into Friday’s showdown, as The C of I has never played well in Ashland.  The Lady Yotes have a 4-14 all-time record on Southern Oregon’s home diamond, including a 1-5 record under head coach Al Mendiola.

REGULAR-SEASON FINALE AT OREGON TECH: The Yotes will close out the regular-season on Saturday morning with a doubleheader at Oregon Tech.  The 2008 CCC champion Owls (19-18, 9-11) have battled an injury plagued season – but are always dangerous at home.  Catcher Katie King (.372 2 HR 24 RBI) is OIT’s top hitter, while Brittany Warren (.305 3 HR 24 RBI) and Sunceray Titus (.269 5 H 23 RBI) are very tough outs.  In the circle, the tandem of Becca Anderson (11-6 3.11 ERA) and Amber Knight (4-5 3.86 ERA) have thrown the majority of the innings.  The Yotes went 2-2 at OIT last year, but trail the all-time series, 26-10.

ABOUT THE COACH: Al Mendiola is in his fourth year as head coach of The C of I softball program, having compiled an 112-73 career record – having won more games than any other softball coach in Coyote history.  The native of San Diego, Calif. has helped the Lady Yotes become a force in Northwest softball, leading The C of I to three consecutive playoff appearances, including the 2007 Cascade Conference championship, the 2008 NAIA Region I championship, and a berth in the 2008 NAIA Women's World Series.  Following the 2007 season, Mendiola was honored as CCC and NAIA Region I Coach of the Year after the Coyotes set a school record with 37 wins.  Under his direction, the Yotes have been ranked as high as No. 14 in the NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll.  Outside of softball, Mendiola was the head coach of the Caldwell Silver Streaks American Legion baseball team from 1997-07 and has also assisted with the Boise Clippers men's fastpitch team.  He was also an assistant coach for The C of I baseball team for seven years.  A 1994 graduate of The C of I, Mendiola played two seasons of baseball for head coach Tim Mooney, earning honorable mention NAIA All-America honors as a senior.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S TRACK: Coyotes run well at NNU Invite, set to compete at Bronco Twilight

COMING UP: at Bronco Twilight (Boise, ID), Friday.

LAST WEEK: at Oregon Relays (Eugene, OR) and Northwest Nazarene Invite (Nampa, ID)

YOTES SWEEP CCC RUNNER OF WEEK AWARDS BY HITTING NAIA MARKS AT NNU: The College of Idaho track team swept this week's Cascade Conference Runner of the Week awards, announced Monday by the league office in Portland, Ore.  Sprinter Terriel Thomas (Chicago, Ill. / Borah HS) earned the Men's Runner of the Week award, while middle-distance runner Maggie Miller (Anchorage, Alaska / Lane CC) was named Women's Runner of the Week.  Thomas set a pair of school-records in the hurdle events at the Northwest Nazarene Invitational.  The freshman placed second in the 110-hurdles in 15.33, while taking home the victory in the 400-hurdles in 55.02, meeting the NAIA "B" qualifying standard.  He also ran the lead leg of the Coyotes 4x400 relay team, clocking a 49.2 split.  Miller shattered the Yotes school-record in the 800-meters in placing second at the NNU Invite.  The sophomore met the NAIA "A" qualifying standard with her time of 2:14.97.

RELAYS RUN WELL: Three of the four C of I relay teams set new season-bests at the NNU invite.  The men’s 4x100 relay team (44.53) and 4x400 relay team (3:23.46) each ran the fourth-fastest time in the CCC this spring, while the women’s 4x400 relay team set a new school record with their time of 4:02.92, the second-fastest time in the league this season.
