VOLLEYBALL: No. 9 ranked Lady Yotes head to San Diego for Seaside Invitational

LAST WEEK: at NAIA Tournament of Champions, Salt Lake City – vs. No 24 Westminster (W 3-0), vs. No. 3 Concordia-Irvine (L 3-1), vs. Mesa State (L 3-2)

COMING UP: at Seaside Invitational, San Diego, Calif. – Friday vs. Mount Marty (S.D.), 11 a.m. (PT), vs. No. 8 Point Loma Nazarene, 8 p.m. (PT); Saturday vs. No. 10 Madonna (Mich.), 11 a.m. (PT), vs. Ashford (Iowa), 3 p.m. (PT)

YOTES HEAD TO CALIFORNIA FOR SEASIDE INVITATIONAL: For the second-straight season, the Lady Yotes will head to California for a preseason tournament against Top-10 competition, as The C of I competes in the Seaside Invitational inside Golden Gymnasium in San Diego, Calif.  It marks the fourth time that the Coyotes have competed in the tournament – as The C of I went 1-3 in 2000, 2-2 in 2001, and 1-3 in 2002.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: Of the four opponents at the Seaside Invitational, the Coyotes have faced two of them previously, with two new teams on the docket.  Up first for the Yotes is Mount Marty College of Yankton, S.D., who opened their season with a five-set victory over Dakota State and a three-set loss to Waldorf over the weekend.  The Lancers (7-22 in 2007), of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, led by setter Abby Haiar, who had 716 assists and 184 digs last season.   Game 2 on Friday is against host Point Loma Nazarene, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Preseason Poll.  The Sea Lions (17-13) are always a quality team, led by All-Golden State Athletic Conference hitter, Melissa Boer (371 kills, 498 digs).  Day 2 starts with a bang against No. 10 ranked Madonna of Livonia, Mich.  The Marauders (5-0 in 2008), who have won 11-straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference titles are led by 6-2 outside hitter Lubovj Tihominova, who is averaging 4.9 kills and 1.1 blocks per set this season.  The Yotes finish out the tourney against Ashford of Clinton, Iowa.  The Saints (17-23) were led last season by libero Abby Adams (871 digs) and hitter Jenny Buelow (484 kills, 668 digs).  The C of I has faced Point Loma and Madonna in the past – going 0-4 vs. the Sea Lions and 0-2 vs. the Marauders.

STREAK AGAINST UNRANKED TEAMS ENDED: Saturday’s loss to Mesa State ended the longest win streak for the Coyotes in program history – as a 64-match win streak against teams not ranked, nor receiving votes in a national poll, was snapped.  The last loss for the Yotes against such an opponent was against Carroll College on Aug. 27, 2005 – a 3-2 decision at the Holiday Inn Express Tournament in Lewiston.  The Coyotes still have one streak intact – they have won 36 consecutive matches at home in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.

BUHLER TOP OPTION: With the loss of an extremely talented senior class, a new group of Coyotes had to figure out who were the go-to players.  Taking advantage of that role was Sarah Buhler (Middleton, Idaho / Middleton HS), who recorded double-figure kills in all three weekend matches.  The junior was fabulous in the victory over Westminster, recording a career-high 17 kills – while recording 0.5 block per set during the three matches.

HENNING OFF TO A GOOD BLOCK: Middle blocker Kristin Henning (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS) was dominating in the middle in Utah, ranking second on the team in kills and first in blocks.  The junior had 27 kills on the weekend, while hitting at a .254 clip – with 15 total blocks, including nine in the four-set loss to No. 3 ranked Concordia-Irvine.

MACHUREK HANDLES THE SETTING: Unlike last season, head coach Liz Mendiola ran a typical system, instead of the 6-2 philosophy they tried in 2007.  With that, sophomore Madie Machurek (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) handled the load, recording over 30 assists in all three matches – averaging 9.3 assists per set, nearly double her output per set from last season.

YOTES SOLID DEFENSIVELY: A pair of Coyote put up big dig numbers in the Beehive State, as juniors Stacie Drumm (Salem, Ore. / South Salem HS) and Courtney Gamel (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS) tag-teamed the opposition.  Drumm led the way with 47 digs, while Gamel had 46 digs – including three-consecutive matches with double-figure digs.  Also showing promise from the back row was sophomore Naomi Reimer (Killarney, Man. / Killarney SS), who had a team-high seven aces and averaged over three digs per set.

RECAP OF THE TOURNEY OF CHAMPIONS: C of I 3, Westminster 0 - The No. 9 ranked Coyotes earned a 25-17, 25-20, 25-20 win over the host Griffins, thanks to a stellar match from Sarah Buhler.  The junior had a career-high 17 kills in the victory, as the Yotes avenged a season-opening loss to Westminster last season.  Madie Machurek led the way with 36 assists, while Stacie Drumm had a career-high 23 digs, as did Courtney Gamel, who had 17 digs. Concordia-Irvine 3, C of I 1 - Match 2 was a see-saw affair with the defending national semifinalists, as the Yotes lost 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18 to the California school.  Jessie Link (Tonopah, Nev. / Nicholls State U.) was the offensive star for the Yotes, recording a career-high 11 kills, while Buhler added ten kills and three block assists.  Machurek had her first double-double of the year with 33 assists and 11 digs, while Naomi Reimer added 17 digs and three aces.  The downfall was in the fourth set, as the Yotes saw the Eagles use an 11-2 push to end the match.  Lindsey Campbell led Concordia with 18 kills and 17 digs.  Mesa State 3, C of I 2 - Alisan Tompkins had 18 kills and 14 digs, leading NCAA Division II Mesa State to a five-set victory over The C of I 25-21, 25-17, 19-25, 20-25, 15-10, in the final match of the 2008 NAIA Tournament of Champions.  It marked the first time that the Lady Yotes had lost a match against an unranked opponent since the 2005 season, as the Mavericks used a four-point push in the final set to break a 7-7 tie.  Buhler led the Yotes with 14 kills, with Kathryn Ely (La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS) adding 11 and Kristin Henning recording 11 kills and nine blocks.  Machurck had 42 assists and eight digs, Gamel had 17 digs, and Drumm added 15 digs in the loss.

ABOUT THE COACH: Liz Mendiola is in her eighth season as head volleyball coach at The C of I.  During her first six seasons at the helm, the Coyotes have advanced to six consecutive Cascade Conference tournaments, four NAIA regional tournaments, and back-to-back trips to the NAIA National Championships in 2005 and 2006.  Last season, the squad won their second-straight CCC title and advanced to the NAIA Region I Tournament semifinals - while being ranked as high as No. 6 in the national poll.  During her career, she has amassed a record of 162-66, the most wins and highest winning percentage in school history.  In 2006, she led the Lady Yotes to their best season in program history, compiling a 35-4 record - earning CCC and NAIA Region I Coach of the Year honors.  The Yotes won their first Cascade Conference championship in 24 years, becoming just the second school to complete the league schedule without a loss.  The Coyotes also captured their second-straight CCC Tournament title, along with their second-straight NAIA Region I Tournament title, before placing ninth at the NAIA Championships.  Her team set a school-record with 22 straight wins and heads into the 2008 season with a 36-match home win streak.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Lady Yotes head to California for three-game trip in Bay Area

COMING UP: at Mills, Thursday, 4 p.m. (PT); at Holy Names, Friday, 3 p.m. (PT), at Dominican, Sunday, 11 a.m. (PT)

SEASON TICKETS: Single-person or family season tickets will be available for all College of Idaho men’s and women’s soccer matches, beginning Sunday at the men’s game vs. Great Falls.  Single-person season tickets are $30, while a family pass is $60 – which will get fans into 16 C of I games this fall.

RECAP OF SCRIMMAGES: The Lady Yotes played a pair of scrimmages prior to Thursday’s season opener in California – earning key game work against both North Idaho College and Treasure Valley CC.  Although stats were not kept for the non-contests, the Lady Yotes dominated play throughout both scrimmage.  “We have been plagued by injuries throughout preseason training,” said head coach Niki Taylor.  I was really pleased with the effort the ladies who were able to play showed – I just wish we could have had our full team healthy so we could experiment in a couple key areas.

THANK YOU MCCALL: The Lady Yotes would like to thank the City of McCall for hosting Saturday’s scrimmage with TVCC.  It was a great team-bonding experience for the Purple and Gold and a nice opportunity to showcase collegiate soccer.

PRESEASON CCC NATIONAL POLL: Unlike the CCC Preseason Coaches Poll, the NAIA releases a Top-5 poll for each conference prior to the release of the NAIA Top-25 rankings.  The Coyotes were ranked No. 4 in both preseason polls, although the polls do not look alike – as Concordia, Corban, and Oregon Tech are atop the national list, with the Yotes and Southern Oregon rounding out the ranking.

COYOTES HEAD TO CALIFORNIA FOR THE FIRST TIME: For the first time in the 20-year history of The C of I women’s soccer program, the Lady Yotes will head to California for a preseason road trip.  The Lady Yotes have played road games in Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Utah over the last two decades – but never in California.

FIRST UP – MILLS COLLEGE: The Lady Yotes open up the road trip on Thursday afternoon with a friendly against Mills College, an all-women’s college in Oakland.  The Cyclones are coming off a 1-13 season in which they scored just five goals all season – but picked up a 2-1 victory over William Jessup in their season finale.  Sophomore Maya Oubre scored each of the goals scored by Mills last season.  It is the first-ever meeting between the schools and the first of four meetings with Cascade Conference schools in 2008.

THEN COMES HOLY NAMES: On Friday, the Lady Yotes remain in the East Bay, taking on Holy Names University.  The Hawks (5-10 in 2007) have a new head coach in Nick Lusson and return leading scorers Annie Canalin, Jessica Gottschalk, and Maria Gonzalez, who each scored three goals last season.  It is the first-ever meeting between the schools and the first of two meetings with CCC schools in 2008.

TRIP ENDS AT DOMINICAN: The Lady Yotes close the trip was a tough battle with Dominican University in San Rafael.  The Penguins (9-4-2) had a quality 2007 season and opened up 2008 with a 3-1 road victory over Southern Oregon.  DU is led by sophomore Bridget Folan, who scored 11 goals and had four assists last season.  It is the second meeting between the teams, as the Penguins defeated the Lady Yotes back in 1996 at the Northwest Nazarene tournament.

MEN’S SOCCER: 2008 Season Preview

COMING UP: at Northwest Nazarene, Thursday, 4:30 p.m.; vs. Great Falls, Sunday, 1 p.m.

QUICK 2008 SYNOPSIS:.Coming off back-to-back 11-win seasons, The College of Idaho men’s soccer team is poised to make a return to the postseason – after missing out on the playoffs in three of the last four years.  With four All-Cascade Conference performers returning to the pitch, a schedule that features ten of their 16 matches in the Treasure Valley, and the Symms Field advantage – it all points to success for the Yotes during the 2008 season.

CCC PRESEASON POLLS: The C of I was the unanimous selection to win the South Division as the 2008 Cascade Conference Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll was released last week.  The Coyotes, coming off a third-place finish last season and an 11-6-1 overall record, claimed the all nine first-place votes in their division - as the CCC splits into a North-South arrangement for the first time this season.  Joining The C of I in the South Division are second-place Corban, followed by Cascade, Northwest Christian, and Oregon Tech.  The North was led by defending loop champion, Concordia, followed by Warner Pacific, Northwest, and Evergreen State.  The first official Cascade Conference rater ranking was released as well, with Concordia taking the top spot, followed by Warner Pacific, the Yotes, Northwest, and Evergreen State – with Concordia ranked No. 24 in the initial NAIA poll and Warner Pacific receiving votes.

LAST SEASON / PLAYERS LOST: It was a tough 2007 season to swallow for the Coyotes, who recorded a 3-1 preseason record, including a 4-0 blanking of a quality Biola team.  However, the Yotes mustered just an 8-5-1 record in CCC play – with all five losses by a one-goal margin (including back-to-back losses at home to end the season, knocking the team out of the playoff race).  Five seniors will need to be replaced – including two-time All-CCC goalkeeper Jay Gentle (now a C of I assistant), two-time All-CCC forward Michael Delgado, All-CCC defender Stephen Reinschmidt, defender Cameron Johnson (now a C of I assistant), and striker Scott Ward.  Also not returning is two-year starting defender Brandon Koomler, who missed most of last season due to injury.

POSITION BY POSITION – GOALKEEPERS: A trio of goalkeepers are vying for the starting role in the net for the Coyotes – as a freshman will start for the Yotes for the first time since the 1999 season.  Leading the way following the first week of training is Aaron Reynolds (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS), who was an All-Southern Idaho Conference selection as a prep and was a standout with the Boise Nationals club team.  At his heels is fellow youngster, Trevor Spielman (Idaho Falls, Idaho / Idaho Falls HS), who helped his high school team to the state tournament last year.  Also in the mix is Theodore Coleman (Lagos, Nigeria / Armand Hammer United World College-USA), who grew up in Nigeria and spent last season as a redshirt.

POSITION BY POSITION – DEFENSE: Two starters return in the back-third for the Coyotes in 2008, as Derek Erstad (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS) and Brian Weiss (Mountain Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS) return for their senior season.  Erstad has started 43 games in his C of I career and has a good left foot, while Weiss is a very physical player.  The Yotes will start the season with an experiment in the back, as last season’s top scorer, Alex Penrod (Las Vegas, Nev. / Cimarron-Memorial HS) will move to the other end of the field.  The All-American, who scored eight goals last season, will allow the Yotes to attack a bit more from back.  Two other returners will be in the mix – senior Scott Thompson (Mountain Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS) and sophomore Mats Boehnke (Carson City, Nev. / Carson HS) – both of whom played in a reserve role last season.  Two freshman also could see playing time – Jon Latorre (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho / Coeur d’Alene HS) and Spencer Ward (Kent, Wash. / Kentwood HS).  Latorre was an All-Northern Idaho selection as a senior, while Ward earned All-Conference honors in the highest classification in Washington high school athletics.

POSITION BY POSITION – MIDFIELD:  The Coyotes are loaded in the midfield this season, as experience will be a key as The C of I looks to control the tempo of play.  Two-time All-CCC midfielder Kazuki Murata (Tokyo, Japan / International Secondary Inst.) is poised for another breakout season, coming off a six goal, nine assist sophomore campaign.  Three other starters flank him, including All-CCC selection Mauricio Both (Cacheoira de Sul, Brazil / Nampa HS), who had five goals in 2007, Garga Caserta (Aracatuba, Brazil / North Idaho CC), who had four goals and five assists, and Jesus Lopez (Nampa, Idaho / Skyview HS), who had three game-winning goals for the Yotes last season.  Joining the quartet is the Yotes lone junior college transfer Brian Griffiths (Boise, Idaho / Walla Walla CC), who had a solid two-year stint in the NWAACC, along with freshman Brad Byers (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) and Jon Schmehl (Hayden, Idaho / Coeur d’Alene HS) – who both earn All-Conference honors in high school.

POSITION BY POSITION – FORWARDS:  The Yotes will look to a pair of returners to pick up the scoring punch up top with Alex Penrod moving to a defensive role.  All-CCC striker Antonio Bautista (Homedale, Idaho / Homedale HS) scored seven goals and assisted on five others as a sophomore and provides stability on the right side, while Emir Kobic (Boise, Idaho / Centennial HS) will roam the left side, having scored four goals and an assist in limited action as a freshman.  Three others will be in the goal-scoring mix – junior Esteban Cabrera (Quito, Ecuador / Payette HS), and freshmen James Collet (Pocatello, Idaho / Pocatello HS) and Travis Newbold (Meridian, Idaho / Meridian HS).  Both Cabrera and Newbold use speed to their advantage, while Collet is an imposing striker, standing at 6-3.

NON CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:  The Coyotes will play four non-conference games in 2008 – all of them in the Treasure Valley.  The Purple and Gold will open up the regular-season with a tussle against Northwest Nazarene, who returns to the pitch for the first time since 2002.  The Crusaders (7-3-1 as a club team in 2007) are led by C of I grad and former All-American, Coe Michaelson, with the Yotes dominating the all-time series, 40-10-2.  The Coyotes will also meet second-year program, Great Falls, on the final day of August.  The Argonauts (2-0) play a physical brand of soccer, but picked up a pair of one-goal road victories at Evergreen State and Northwest to open 2008.  The Yotes close out the preseason with matches against Division III teams – Whitman and Pacific.  The Missionaries (10-9-1 in 2007) were picked fourth in the Northwest Conference preseason poll and are led by returning All-NWC selections Stephen Phillips and Brett Axelrod, while the Boxers (8-7-2 in 2007) return ten starters from last year, as they meet the Coyotes for the first time since 1995.

CASCADE CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:  For the first time, the CCC will split into divisions – as nine teams compete in men’s soccer, the largest contingent of teams in the 16-year history of the conference.  The North Division looks to be very competitive, led by defending loop champ, Concordia.  The Cavaliers (16-4 in 2007) return CCC Player of the Year Alex Ponce (14 goals, 13 assists), along with keeper Garrett Staples and Lucas Egenwall – who both earned All-America honors.  Warner Pacific will also be a team to be reckoned, as the Knights (11-7) return the 1-2 scoring punch of Davor Lukic (11 goals, 7 assists) and Chris Price (9 goals, 11 assists) from last year.  Northwest (6-12) returns 16 members of last season’s team, including seven starters, while Evergreen State (7-10-1) looks to continue their late-season success, going 6-3-1 over their final ten games.  Joining the Yotes in the South Division are Corban (6-10-2), who return six starters from last year, and Cascade (8-10), who has a new head coach in Mike Alfers.  Second-year program, Northwest Christian (1-16) should be much improved this season, while first-year program, Oregon Tech, should be competitive after drawing from the talent rich Klamath Basin soccer pool.  The Cascade Conference Tournament will return for the first time since the 2003 with a different catch – the winner will receive an automatic berth to the NAIA Championships.  The top-two teams from each division will advance to the playoffs, along with the next two teams with the highest Longo rating.

ABOUT THE COACH: Brian Smith (5th year, 41-25-3) is in his fifth season as head coach of The C of I men's soccer team.  In his first season two seasons, the Coyotes narrowly missed a spot in the NAIA Region I Tournament, despite a second and third-place finish in the Cascade Conference standings.  In 2006, however, the Yotes claimed their first CCC title since 2001 and advanced to the regional semifinals.  For his efforts, the Coyote skipper was named CCC Coach of the Year.  Last season, the Yotes missed out on the postseason by one game.  Smith, who helped the Coyotes to a 35-21-1 record as a player for longtime coach, John Calpin, from 1990-93, returned to his alma mater in 2004 after a successful high school coaching career in the Treasure Valley.  He coached the Timberline High School boys’ team for three years, before taking over the THS girls’ program in 2002 – earning Idaho State Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2001 and Southern Idaho Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2003. After earning All-District honors as a player and graduating from The C of I with a degree in political science in 1994, Smith has assisted the Coyote program along with serving as a coach with the Boise National Soccer Club during the past decade.

CROSS COUNTRY: 2008 Season Preview

COMING UP: Purple and White Intrasquad Race (C of I campus course), Friday – Women at 6:15 p.m., Men at 6:45 p.m.

QUICK 2008 SYNOPSIS: The College of Idaho cross country teams are poised to have another outstanding season, as the Coyotes begin their fifth-year since runners returned to the Caldwell campus.  The men’s team will have to replace their top-two runners from last season – but will have outstanding depth, while the women’s team returns four All-Cascade Conference performers from a team that finished second in the league.

LADY YOTES PICKED TO WIN CCC: Earlier in the week, the Cascade Conference coaches picked The C of I to win the women’s title in 2008.  The Lady Yotes picked up seven of the 11 first-place votes and picked up 117 voter points, four ahead of defending champion, Eastern Oregon.  Corban, Concordia, and Northwest round out the Top-5.  Last year, the Lady Yotes were picked third by the league coaches in the preseason poll.

COYOTE MEN PICKED SECOND: For the second-straight year, the CCC coaches picked The C of I men to finish second in the league standings in 2008.  The Coyotes did not pick up a first-place vote, however, earned 100 voter points, one ahead of third-place Southern Oregon.  Defending league-champ Eastern Oregon captured ten of the 11 first-place votes to sit atop the ranking, with Concordia in fourth and Corban fifth.

PRESEASON NATIONAL POLL: For the first-time ever, The C of I women were ranked in the NAIA Top-25 Preseason Coaches Poll, as the Lady Yotes achieved the No. 11 spot in the polling released by the national office in Kansas City, Mo., on Thursday.  It marks the highest-ever ranking by the Coyotes in program history, eclipsing the No. 14 mark they notched midway through the 2007 season.  They are joined in the Top-25 by fellow CCC rival, Eastern Oregon (No. 13), with Corban receiving votes.  On the men's side, the Yotes received five voter points, or ranked No. 37 in the presesason poll.  Eastern Oregon (No. 8) and Concordia (No. 21) were the other two CCC teams in the poll.  Last season, the Coyote men were ranked No. 14 in the preseason poll.

LAST SEASON / PLAYERS LOST: The 2007 season was a banner year for the Coyote cross country program – as the Purple and Gold had their first-ever conference champion, five All-CCC selections, their best individual finish at the NAIA Championships, and their second team to qualify for the national meet.  The Coyote men will have to replace their top two runners – as four-year standouts Tyler Hopper and Jesse Chlebeck, have graduated, along with fellow senior, Tyler Gross.  The Lady Yotes graduated just three seniors, including Lauren Plymire, who was among the Top-5 for the squad all season.

ABOUT THE WOMEN: The Lady Yotes have high expectations coming into the 2008 season – and with just two seniors on the roster, the expectations may be there for years to come.  Leading the charge for the Coyotes is Stephanie Helm (Challis, Idaho / Challis HS), who had the most dominant season by a C of I runner.  As a freshman, she not only set school records in the 4,000 (14:30) and 5,000-meters (18:26), but captured the CCC individual championship, earning CCC Women’s Runner of the Year honors.  Helm placed 31st at the NAIA Championships – the highest finish by a C of I runner in school history, while also finishing as the runner-up in the 3,000-meters at the NAIA Indoor Track Championships.  Not far behind Helm are a trio of runners who earned All-CCC honors last year – juniors Stephanie Sparks (West Jordan, Utah / Juan Diego HS), Chantel Varland (Meridian, Idaho / Mountain View HS), and Molli Lee-Painter (Moscow, Idaho / Moscow HS), all of whom ran the 5,000-meter course under 20-minutes in 2007.  Three others – Kristine Smith (New Meadows, Idaho / Meadows Valley HS), Jayne Saunders (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS), and Tegan Troutner (Lake Fork, Idaho / McCall-Donnelly HS) should battle to be in the Top-7.  Two newcomers also figure to be in the scoring mix – true freshman Kayloni Jones (Nine Mile Falls, Wash. / Lakeside HS) and transfer Maggie Miller (Anchorage, Alaska / Lane CC).

ABOUT THE MEN: The Coyote men, who have qualified as a team to two of the last three NAIA Championships, will be led by senior Sam Hardy (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS), who is coming off an injury-plagued 2007 season.  Hardy joins juniors Geoff Williams (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS) and Mike Tobiason (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS), along with sophomore Paul Sartin (Meridian, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS), as a solid scoring contingent for the Yotes – all who have run 8,000-meters under 26:40.  Adding depth for The C of I is Kiprotich Langat (Nairobi, Kenya / United World College-USA), who ran for the Coyotes in track last Spring, along with freshmen Zeke Wilson (Challis, Idaho / Challis HS), who won a state championship last Fall.

ABOUT THE HEAD COACH: Pat McCurry is in his fifth season has the head coach for The C of I cross country and track programs.  In just four seasons (after the Coyote running programs were dormant for nearly 30 years), he has built the Coyote men and women into NAIA Top-25 programs, with the men's team achieving berths to the 2005 and 2007 NAIA Championships.  Both programs have also had at-large runners at nationals each of the first four seasons.  He has also coached three NAIA All-Americans, and numerous All-Cascade Conference and All-NAIA Region I competitors.  A native of Boise and graduate of Bishop Kelly High, McCurry came to C of I after serving as the assistant coach at Eastern Oregon University, his alma mater, for two years.  He helped the Mountaineer men achieve a No. 1 ranking in the 2003 NAIA preseason poll.  As a head coach, he led North Powder High to a track and field state championship.  He also competes at a high-level post-collegiately, running for the Nike-Portland Track and Eastside Club, having won the 2005 Race to Robie Creek and the City of Trees marathon.  McCurry and his wife Andrija live in Caldwell.
