VOLLEYBALL (3-6, 0-2 CCC): Lady Yotes look to put home streak on the line against Warner Pacific and Cascade College

LAST WEEK: at Southern Oregon (L 3-1), at No. 18 Oregon Tech (L 3-0)

COMING UP: vs. Warner Pacific, Friday, 7 p.m.; vs. Cascade, Saturday, 7 p.m.

YOTES ROUGHED UP ON ROAD TRIP: The longest bus trip of the season for The College of Idaho volleyball team was made longer last weekend, as the Lady Yotes dropped a pair of matches – one to then No. 12 ranked Southern Oregon, another to now No. 18 ranked Oregon Tech.  As a team, the Coyotes recorded 53 hitting errors in the seven sets played, managing just a .124 hitting percentage, while their opponents hit .270 – compared to a .155 attack percentage in the first seven matches of the season.  The Yotes were unable to gain points on their serve – as they managed just six aces on the weekend, while averaging over 1.5 aces per set coming in, and averaged more than two digs fewer per match in Oregon than they had the rest of the season.

LAST BACK-TO-BACK CCC LOSSES: Last weekend also marked the first time since the five seasons that the Lady Yotes had dropped back-to-back league matches.  The last time it occurred was on Sept. 17-18 of 2004, when The C of I lost a four-set match at Southern Oregon and a five-set match at Oregon Tech.

TOUGHEST ROAD TRIP: The Lady Yotes have made the trip to Southern and OIT 19 times previously, and have swept the trip only twice – the last time in 2006.

SPINKS, OWEN HAVE SOLID WEEKEND: A silver lining for the weekend was the play of a pair of first-year players, as freshman Megan Spinks (Manteca, Calif. / East Union HS) and sophomore Whitney Owen (Caldwell, Idaho / Vallivue HS) played well on the trip.  Spinks averaged 2.5 kills per set, hitting at a .258 clip, including a career-high eight kills at Southern Oregon, while Owen, seeing her first time this season on the court, had 18 digs and two aces in the two matches

ONE POLL STREAK OVER, ONE STILL STRONG: Despite a tough start to the season and back-to-back road losses to open up the 2008 CCC season, the Lady Yotes received votes in the first NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll of the season, released by the national office Tuesday in Kansas City, Mo.  The C of I, who saw their streak of 25-straight weeks in the Top-25 snapped, received 36 voter points, good enough for No. 36 in the NAIA.  They were ranked No. 9 in the preseason poll, released in August.  However, the Coyotes extended their streak of consecutive weeks receiving votes in the poll to 34 - dating back to September of 2005.  Two CCC rivals were ranked in the Top-25 - Oregon Tech at No. 18 and Eastern Oregon at No. 22, while Southern Oregon and Concordia each received votes.  Other C of I opponents were also ranked - No. 6 Point Loma Nazarene, No. 7 Madonna, and No. 12 Lewis-Clark State.

CASCADE CONFERENCE RANKINGS: The first regular-season CCC Coaches Poll was released on Monday, with the Lady Yotes slipping from No. 1 to No. 4 in the balloting.  Oregon Tech assumed the top spot, followed by Eastern Oregon, Southern Oregon, and the Yotes.  Rounding out the Top-8 were Concordia, Corban, Northwest, and Warner Pacific.

DEFENDING THE HOME COURT: The Lady Yotes will get accustomed to playing in the J.A. Albertson Activities Center over the next two weeks, as the Purple and Gold will play four matches and an exhibition match during that span.  The home court advantage as been prevalent, as The C of I has not lost a home match since the 2005 season – taking a 36-match home win streak into the weekend.

ABOUT WARNER PACIFIC: The Coyotes open up their weekend set against upstart Warner Pacific, who have started off the 2008 season with a bang.  The Knights (4-0, 2-0 CCC) are one of only three teams in the CCC without a league loss and are the lone team who have failed to lose a match this season.  WP’s record may be a bit deceiving, as they are averaging less than ten kills and one block as a team per set – and are hitting just .121 overall, but are averaging more than two service aces per set.  Individually, Kara Veach (3.2 k/s, 2.9 d/s) and Leah Gradwohl (3.0 k/s, 2.8 d/s) have been the top options for the Knights, while setter Samantha Kolakowski (9.6 a/s, 0.7 a/s) has been solid.  It is the 27th meeting between the schools, with the Lady Yotes holding a 24-2 series edge, including victories in the past 24 meetings.

ABOUT CASCADE: Saturday, an improved Cascade squad makes the trip to Caldwell – looking for their first-ever win in the Activities Center.  The T-Birds (2-3, 1-1) are looking to put their past troubles aside (going just 7-103 over the last six years in CCC play) – with a five-set win at George Fox on Tuesday being the turning point.  Megan Stanley (3.3 k/s, 2.9 d/s) has been a solid offensive weapon, as has Natalee Staggs (1.7 k/s, 1.2 b/s), with Carla Crowder (8.1 a/s, 1.6 d/s) running the offense.  It is the 34th meeting between the schools, with the Yotes holding a 28-5 series edge, including winning the last 22 in a row.

CCC NUMBERS: Kills – Krista Wooley (OIT) 3.5, Sarah Buhler (CI) 3.5, Grace Deboodt (EOU) 3.4, Meagan Stanley (CAS) 3.3, Kara Veach (WP) 3.2; Assists – Skyler Kamaka (CU) 8.9, Lindsey Stone (SOU) 8.9, Samantha Kolakowski (WP) 8.5, Lizzie Law (OIT) 8.3, Carla Crowder (CAS) 8.1; Digs – Sareena Simpson (EOU) 5.3, Rebecca Franke (CRB) 5.3, Annie Forman (ESC) 4.2, Rashelle Davenport (CRB) 3.8, Molly Webb (WP) 3.8; Blocks – Marcella Hernandez (CI) 1.3, Natalee Staggs (WP) 1.2, Megan Bartling (SOU) 1.1, Kristin Henning (CI) 1.0, Deboodt 1.0.

CAREER RECORD BOOK: Four C of I players currently rank among the Top-10 in the all-time career record book.  Leading the way is Kathryn Ely (La Grande, Ore. / La Grande HS), who is fifth in school history with 1,199 kills.  Also Kristin Henning (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS) ranks No. 6 all-time in blocks with 286, Madie Machurek (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) is seventh in assists with 794, and Naomi Reimer (Killarney, Man. / Killarney SS) is eighth in assists with 533.

RECAP – SOUTHERN OREGON 3, C OF I 1: Southern Oregon took advantage of 29 C of I hitting errors, helping the Raiders to a 25-14, 26-28, 25-19, 25-22 victory over the Yotes in a CCC battle of then nationally ranked foes Friday in McNeal Pavilion.  The Raiders defeated the Coyotes for the second time in as many years in Ashland, getting 13 kills from Sarah Holgen and 11 kills from Mia Wortel in the win.  CCC Player of the Year, Lindsey Stone had a match-high 46 assists and nine digs in the victory.  SOU used a 16-3 push to close out Set 1 - recording 13 kills as a team, with just one error.  The Lady Yotes would rally to win Set 2, staving off a pair of Raider set points, earning the win on a Southern hitting error.  After the Raiders won Set 3, the Yotes would lead 10-9 in the fourth set, but a 7-1 push by the hosts would give them the lead for good.  Sarah Buhler (Middleton, Idaho / Middleton HS) led the Coyotes with 18 kills, while Naomi Reimer had a career-high ten kills and eight digs.  Kristin Henning added nine kills, with freshman Megan Spinks adding eight.  Madie Machurek had 41 assists and nine digs, while Stacie Drumm (Salem, Ore. / South Salem HS) had 17 digs and Whitney Owen added 11 digs in the loss.

RECAP – OREGON TECH 3, C OF I 0: Krista Wooley recorded 15 kills and the Oregon Tech volleyball team held The C of I to a .095 hitting percentage, as the Owls stunned the Lady Yotes 25-16, 25-15, 25-23 Saturday at Danny Miles Court, ending a seven-game losing streak to the Yotes.  Tech rolled to wins in each of the first two sets - jumping out to a 10-0 lead in Set 1 and a 12-4 lead in Set 2.  Set 3 was tighter, as the two teams were tied at 21-21, before OIT ran off three straight points and put the match away with a Nicole Andrews spike.  Megan Christenson and Anna Leal each had eight kills in the win, with Lizzie Law recording 31 assists, and Krystie Vea recording 15 digs.  The Coyotes got ten kills each from Kristin Henning and Sarah Buhler, with Megan Spinks adding seven spikes.  Unfortunately, no other player had more than three kills.  Madie Machurek led the Yotes with 22 assists, while Whitney Owen recorded seven digs.

ABOUT THE COACH: Liz Mendiola is in her eighth season as head volleyball coach at The C of I.  During her first six seasons at the helm, the Coyotes have advanced to six consecutive Cascade Conference tournaments, four NAIA regional tournaments, and back-to-back trips to the NAIA National Championships in 2005 and 2006.  Last season, the squad won their second-straight CCC title and advanced to the NAIA Region I Tournament semifinals - while being ranked as high as No. 6 in the national poll.  During her career, she has amassed a record of 164-70, the most wins and highest winning percentage in school history.  In 2006, she led the Lady Yotes to their best season in program history, compiling a 35-4 record - earning CCC and NAIA Region I Coach of the Year honors.  The Yotes won their first Cascade Conference championship in 24 years, becoming just the second school to complete the league schedule without a loss.  The Coyotes also captured their second-straight CCC Tournament title, along with their second-straight NAIA Region I Tournament title, before placing ninth at the NAIA Championships.  Her team set a school-record with 22 straight wins and heads into the 2008 season with a 36-match home win streak.

MEN’S SOCCER (1-1-1): Yotes to play 400th all-time game with Friday home friendly against Pacific University

LAST WEEK: vs. Whitman (T 0-0)

COMING UP: vs. Pacific, Friday, 4 p.m.

COYOTES SET FOR GAME #400: Friday’s home match against Pacific University will mark the 400th match in College of Idaho men’s soccer history – dating back to the inception of the program in 1984.  In this the 25th anniversary season of Coyote soccer, the Yotes hold a 240-139-20 all-time record on the pitch.

REYNOLDS NAMED DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: C of I student-athlete Aaron Reynolds (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) was named the Cascade Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office in Portland, Ore., on Monday afternoon.  The freshman recorded his second-straight shutout on Saturday, recording 110 minutes in goal, helping the Coyotes to a 0-0 draw against Whitman College.  Reynolds was peppered by the Whitman attack all afternoon, as the Missionaries launched 25 shots in the contest, including 11 on-goal - but made the save on each of them, including four shots from inside the six-yard box.  Since allowing four goals in an overtime loss to Northwest Nazarene, the Yote keeper has turned away 19 consecutive shots on goal.

YOTES BEND, BUT DO NOT BREAK:  The Whitman game on Saturday was a wild 0-0 draw, as the two teams combined for 39 total shots, including 17 on the frame.  However, kudos go to the back-third for the Yotes, who kept the NCAA Division III school at bay.  Alex Penrod (Las Vegas, Nev. / Cimarron-Memorial HS) was solid in just his third game as a defenseman, while the Yotes got quality minutes from Scott Thompson (Twin Falls, Idaho / Twin Falls HS), Derek Erstad (Boise, Idaho / Timberline HS), Mats Boehnke (Carson City, Nev. / Carson HS), and Brian Weiss (Mountain Home, Idaho / Mountain Home HS) – along with the play of Aaron Reynolds in goal.

ARE 0-0 TIES RARE? The 0-0 draw between the Coyotes and Whitman marked just the 20th tie in program history in 399 matches – and just seventh time that the score has ended in clean sheet.  Three of the 0-0 games have come in the last three seasons (2008 vs. Whitman, 2007 vs. Corban, 2006 vs. Whitman), with the others spread out between two decades (1999 vs. Westminster, 1987 vs. Westminster, 1987 vs. Warner Pacific, 1985 vs. Lewis & Clark).

CONFERENCE/NAIA RANKINGS: The first Cascade Conference Coaches Poll of the regular-season was released on Monday, with the Coyotes sitting in the No. 3 spot – right where they were in the preseason tabulation.  Concordia remains on top, followed by Warner Pacific, the Yotes, Evergreen State, and Oregon Tech.  Concordia moved up five spots in the NAIA poll to No. 19, while Warner Pacific received votes.  The CCC poll is released each Monday, with the NAIA poll released on Tuesday afternoons.

RIVALRY WITH PACIFIC RENEWED: For the first time since the 1995 season, the Coyotes will meet Pacific on the men’s soccer pitch.  The Boxers (2-1), who were a common opponent of The C of I during the 80s and early 90s, made the transition from the NAIA to the NCAA Division III – and are currently a member of the Northwest Conference, where they were picked to finish fifth this fall.  Pacific has played well during the early season, earning wins over Corban and La Verne, losing a tight 2-1 decision with Warner Pacific.  Leading the Boxers is striker Danny Williams (3 goals, 1 assist), who ranks third all-time at PU with 26 goals and 57 overall points.  Keeper Andrew Steverman (0.70 GAA) has been stellar in goal, leading the NWC in saves.  It is the 12th all-time meeting between the programs, with the series knotted a 4-4-3 – with the last two matches resulting in ties.

CCC NUMBERS: As a team, the Yotes have allowed the fewest number of goals this season (4), recorded the most shutouts (2), while ranking second in goals against average (1.24).  Individually, keeper Aaron Reynolds leads the league in goals against average (1.24), in save percentage (.862), and in shutouts (2), while ranking second in saves per game (8.33).  Garga Caserta (Aracatuba, Brazil / North Idaho CC) is third in the league in shots per game (3.3), with Kazuki Murata (Tokyo, Japan / International Secondary Inst.) and Antonio Bautista (Homedale, Idaho / Homedale HS) tied for second in assists per game (0.7) and third in overall assists (2).

GAME RECAP: C OF I 0, WHITMAN 0: Despite a decisive advantage shots and possession, the Whitman College men's soccer team could not find the goal, as the Missionaries and The College of Idaho played to a scoreless draw Saturday at Symms Field.  Whitman held a 25-14 edge in shots - including a 10-3 margin in the second half, but could not find the goal against the host Yotes.  C of I keeper Aaron Reynolds was stellar all day, making 11 saves to notch his second-straight shutout.  The Missionaries found the goal in the 34th minute, but the tally was disallowed due to an offsides call.    The Coyotes had a chance to steal the victory in the 89th minute, as Antonio Bautista cracked a shot from left of the goal, but Whitman keeper Brett Axelrod made a diving save to send the match to overtime.  In the 97th minute, Greg Phillips nearly won it with a drive inside the 18, but it ricocheted off the left post and out.  The Coyotes nearly took home the Golden Goal in the 107th minute, as Garga Caserta got behind the Whitman defense, but his 1-on-1 shot went into the side netting.

ABOUT THE COACH: Brian Smith (5th year, 42-26-43) is in his fifth season as head coach of The C of I men's soccer team.  In his first season two seasons, the Coyotes narrowly missed a spot in the NAIA Region I Tournament, despite a second and third-place finish in the Cascade Conference standings.  In 2006, however, the Yotes claimed their first CCC title since 2001 and advanced to the regional semifinals.  For his efforts, the Coyote skipper was named CCC Coach of the Year.  Last season, the Yotes missed out on the postseason by one game.  Smith, who helped the Coyotes to a 35-21-1 record as a player for longtime coach, John Calpin, from 1990-93, returned to his alma mater in 2004 after a successful high school coaching career in the Treasure Valley.  He coached the Timberline High School boys’ team for three years, before taking over the THS girls’ program in 2002 – earning Idaho State Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2001 and Southern Idaho Conference Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2003. After earning All-District honors as a player and graduating from The C of I with a degree in political science in 1994, Smith has assisted the Coyote program along with serving as a coach with the Boise National Soccer Club during the past decade.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (2-2): Lady Yotes look to end losing streak with home games vs. Great Falls and Carroll

LAST WEEK: vs. Rocky Mountain (L 2-0)

COMING UP: vs. Great Falls, Friday, 2 p.m.; vs. No. 10 Carroll, Sunday, Noon

DISAPPOINTING EFFORT VS. ROCKY: The College of Idaho women’s soccer team opened up their home schedule last Friday, struggling to find a rhythm in a 2-0 loss to Rocky Mountain.  Two early goals put the Purple and Gold behind the eight-ball, and the hosts didn’t muster much of an offensive charge.  “It was strange,” said head coach Niki Taylor.  “The players were pumped up in the locker room before the game and I thought our warm up was good.  However, it did not transfer to the game – we came out flat.”

FOUR KEY PLAYERS MISS THE WEEKEND: The Lady Yotes have survived the first four games of the season despite missing four key players with nagging preseason ailments.  Forward Macy Egerman (Boise, Idaho / Boise HS), and defenders Melissa Garrison (Boise, Idaho / Borah HS) and Lauren Winterholler (Idaho Falls, Idaho / North Idaho College) are hopeful to return to the line-up this weekend, while striker Amanda Barrieau (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) will be unavailable.

CASCADE CONFERENCE/NAIA RANKINGS: In the first Cascade Conference Top-5 poll of the season, the Lady Yotes were one of two teams that were listed – joining Concordia, as the majority of the CCC teams are below the .500 mark.  Concordia was ranked No. 5 in the first NAIA Top-25 poll, while four other Lady Yote opponents were listed – No. 8 Simon Fraser, No. 10 Carroll, with both Rocky Mountain and Dominican receiving votes.  The CCC poll is released on Monday afternoon and the NAIA poll is released on Tuesday afternoon.

HOMESTAND CONTINUES: The three game homestand continues with matches Friday and Sunday – the final home tilts until Homecoming Weekend on Oct. 3-4.  Friday also marks the first doubleheader with the men’s program – with the Lady Yotes playing at 2 p.m., with the Coyotes playing 30-minutes following the match.

ABOUT GREAT FALLS: For the third-straight year, the Lady Yotes will meet Great Falls of the Frontier Conference.  The Lady Argos (2-2) continue in their trek through the Cascade Conference outposts – losing lopsided matches to Corban and Warner Pacific, while picking up shutout victories against both Cascade and Northwest Christian.  Junior Jessica Selmer (2 goals)  has scored half of the UGF tallies this season for first-year head coach Brian Clarke.  It marks the third meeting between the teams, with the Yotes picking up 1-0 victories in both Caldwell and in Great Falls.

ABOUT CARROLL: The Coyotes will look to break through against one of the elite teams in the Northwest, as defending NAIA Region I champion Carroll College heads to town.  The Saints (2-1), ranked No. 10 in the NAIA poll, have won two in a row (including a 9-0 victory over Northwest Christian) after dropping their season opener to Concordia.  Carroll, who has advanced to the last two NAIA national tournaments, is led by Meghan O’Connell (3 goals, 2 assists), while Kelly Benson, Tayt Eillson, and Bobbi Allard have all scored two goals.  Keeper Katie Beall (2.73 GAA) has allowed just one goal in her last two matches.  It is the seventh meeting between the two sides, with Carroll holding a 7-0 all-time series lead.

CCC NUMBERS: The Lady Yotes lead the CCC in assists (11), assists per game (2.8), shutouts (1), and offsides calls per game (4.5).  Individually, Mandy Greif (Payette, Idaho / Payette HS) leads the loop in assists (4) and assists per game (1.0).  Ashley Page (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS) is fifth in the loop in shots per game (3.0), while both Jamie Reichel (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) and Emily Dickerson (Nampa, Idaho / Vallivue HS) are fourth in points per game (1.8) and fifth in overall points (7), goals (3), and goals per game (0.8).

GAME RECAP – ROCKY MOUNTAIN 2, C OF I 1: A pair of first half goals were enough for visiting Rocky Mountain College, as the Bears spoiled the 2008 home opener for The C of I, blanking the Yotes, 2-0, Friday at Symms Field.  Rocky got on the board in the 18th minute, as Anna Clark took a through-ball from Abby Jenkins down the right side that eluded The C of I defense, and beat keeper Sadie Hughes (Courtenay, B.C. / Vanier SS) to make it 1-0.  The Bears would make it 2-0 ten minutes later, as Chloe Pennisi corraled a loose ball just outside of the 18, turned and looped a shot into the net.  The Coyotes had their best chances in the second half, as in 47th minute, Chelsea Heffner (Meridian, Idaho / Mountain View HS) received a through-ball and was in space, but Bears keeper Vanessa Peters thwarted the 1-on-1 chance - one of her nine saves.  In the 77th minute, the Yotes peppered the goal during a scrum, but shots by Heffner and Jamie Reichel were blocked.

ABOUT THE COACH: Niki Taylor (17-19-5) is in her third season as head coach of The College of Idaho women's soccer program.  In her two seasons with the Coyotes, she helped the Lady Yotes to their first-ever back-to-back playoff appearances, including their first-ever postseason win in 2007, advancing to the Cascade Conference Tournament semifinals.   A graduate of Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., Taylor was an honorable mention all-conference player for the Bulldogs in 1999 and 2000, helping the squad to an NCAA Division II regional championships.  She went on to assist coach Mike Cannon during the 2001 season, helping TSU to the regional finals, then moved West, where she was an assistant for Steve Lucas at Boise State for three seasons.  She has also been involved with the Les Bois United Soccer Club for the past five years, while serving as a head coach in the Idaho Olympic Development Program.  Taylor has received her USSF "B" Coaching License.

CROSS COUNTRY: Helm wins women’s title, both C of I teams place second at Roger Curran Invite

LAST WEEK: at Roger Curran Invitational (Men 2nd of 5 Teams, Women 2nd of 4 Teams)

COMING UP: Idle until Sept. 20 at Bob Firman Invitational, Eagle Island State Park.

HELM LEADS C OF I WOMEN TO SECOND-PLACE FINISH: A dominating performance by College of Idaho women's standout Stephanie Helm (Challis, Idaho / Challis HS) set the tone for the day, as the Coyote women’s cross country team placed second at the Roger Curran Invitational, hosted by Northwest Nazarene University, Saturday at West Park in Nampa.  Helm outdistanced a star-studded field by 12 seconds in 14:46.50, the second-fastest 4,000-meter race in school history.  She defeated Breanna Sande, the 2007 Western Athletic Conference champion from Boise State, Ashley Puga, an NCAA Division II All-American from Northwest Nazarene, and Marcella Bosch, the top runner from Eastern Oregon.  Balance was the key in the team race, as the Coyotes next four finishers were piled from seventh to 12th-place, separated by just 12 seconds.  Freshman Kayloni Jones (Nine Mile Falls, Wash. / Lakeside HS) was solid in her debut, finishing seventh overall.  Boise State took the title, but the Lady Yotes were just six points behind the D-I squad, but 32 points ahead of NNU - ranked No. 5 in the D-II West Region, and 58 points ahead of EOU, ranked No. 13 in the NAIA.

COYOTE MEN PLACE SECOND IN NAMPA: The Coyote men were just as impressive, finishing in second place, just 11 points behind first-place Boise State.  However, the Yotes, unranked in the NAIA preseason poll, destroyed No. 8 ranked Eastern Oregon, topping the Mountaineers by 44 points - with four C of I runners finishing before the first EOU scorer.  True freshman Zeke Wilson (Challis, Idaho / Challis HS) was the story, taking fourth-place overall with a time of 19:29.84.  Just 12 seconds separated the Yotes next three finishers from Wilson, as Kiprotich Langat (Nairobi, Kenya / United World College-USA) finished sixth, Sam Hardy (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS) eighth, and Paul Sartin (Boise, Idaho / Bishop Kelly HS) tenth.

HELM NAMED RUNNER OF THE WEEK: This year, the Cascade Conference will begin awarding Player of the Week honors in all sports – including cross country and track and field.  The first-ever CCC Women’s Runner of the Week announced by the league office was Stephanie Helm, thanks to her victory at the Roger Curran Invite.

BOTH TEAMS RANKED IN TOP-25: Both The C of I men's and women's cross country teams were ranked among the elite squads in the nation, as the NAIA unveiled their first Top-25 Coaches Poll of the regular season, released Tuesday by the national office in Kansas City, Mo.  The Lady Yotes were ranked No. 12 in the polling, down one spot from their preseason perch at No. 11 (as four teams moved ahead of the Yotes after not turning in their rater information prior to the preseason poll), while the Coyote men were ranked No. 14 - jumping into the poll after being listed in the "Others Receiving Votes" category during the preseason.  For the men, it marks the tenth-straight regular-season poll that they have been in the Top-25.  Both teams were the highest ranked Cascade Conference team in the poll, with Eastern Oregon's men ranked No. 21 - the only other CCC team of either gender in the Top-25.  Concordia and Southern Oregon received votes on the men's side, while on the women's side, Concordia, Eastern Oregon, and Corban all received votes.

YOTES ON TOP OF CCC POLL: For the first time ever, both the Coyote men and women were atop the Cascade Conference rankings for the first time.  The men lead the poll, followed by Eastern Oregon, Concordia, Southern Oregon, and Oregon Tech, while the women sit on top, followed by Concordia, Eastern Oregon, Corban, and Evergreen State.  The CCC poll will be released each Monday, the NAIA poll will be released each Tuesday.

GOLF: Season Preview

COMING UP: at Northwest Christian Invitational, Tokatee GC, McKenzie Bridge, Ore., Monday-Tuesday (36 holes/18 holes)

QUICK 2008 SYNOPSIS: The upcoming season should be a breakout year for The College of Idaho men’s and women’s golf teams, as a quality recruiting class will bolster a solid group of returners, looking to make a splash in the second year of Cascade Conference play

COYOTE MEN PICKED FOURTH: The Coyote men’s team was picked fourth in the recently released CCC Preseason Coaches Poll.  Defending champion, Concordia, was the unanimous choice to repeat as champions, followed by Corban, Northwest Christian, the Coyotes, and first-year program, Warner Pacific.

LADY YOTES PICKED THIRD: The C of I women were picked third in the CCC Preseason Coaches Poll, trailing defending champion, Concordia, and Corban.  Northwest Christian was picked fourth, with Warner Pacific fifth.

LAST SEASON / PLAYERS LOST: Last season was not a banner year for the Coyote golf program, as the men’s team struggled all season – averaging nearly 348 team strokes per 18-holes, finishing 11th at the NAIA Region I Tournament, while the women’s team did not have the necessary four players to record a team score.  Of the two teams, only Catherine Everist, the women’s No. 1 player, has graduated – leading the team with an average score of 94.

ABOUT THE MEN: The Yotes return their top-two golfers from last season in seniors Ben Coate (Boise, Idaho / Capital HS) and Cris Tietsort (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS) – a pair who have averaged around 80 strokes per round during their collegiate career.  Recruits look to fill up the remaining spots on the travel squad, led by local standout Tyler Thurston (Eagle, Idaho / Eagle HS), who placed 11th at the 5A state tournament, helping Eagle High to the title.  Others in the mix are Jordan Taylor (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS), who placed 14th at the 4A state championship, transfer Jeff Davies (North Ogden, Utah / BYU-Idaho), and freshman Jacob Reyes (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS).  Also battling for position are returners James Taylor (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS) and Kurt Nielson (Rexburg, Idaho / Madison HS).

ABOUT THE WOMEN: The Lady Yotes return All-Cascade Conference selection, April Patton (Ontario, Ore. / Ontario HS) – who shot her final four rounds in the 90s last season.  Newcomers will fill the remaining slots on the ladder, led by transfer Cecilia Garcia (Ontario, Ore. / Treasure Valley CC) – who was the No. 1 player on the TVCC squad and placed fifth last season at the Coyote Invitational.  She’ll be joined by another transfer, Jordan Peterson (Star, Idaho / Western Washington U.), and freshmen Breanna Pace (Burley, Idaho / Burley HS), Heidi Murphy (Caldwell, Idaho / Caldwell HS), and Sarah Fast (Emmett, Idaho / Emmett HS) – who each placed in the Top-20 of their respective state tournaments last spring.

WHAT’S AT STAKE: This season, each of the five teams in the CCC will host a 54-hole tournament, culminating with the 2009 Cascade Conference Championships, presented by Diamond Woods Golf Course.  Following the conference tourney, the five CCC men’s teams will battle with the four Golden State Athletic Conference schools (Biola, Cal Baptist, Point Loma Nazarene, The Masters) with the winner earning an automatic berth to the NAIA championships.  According to the NAIA qualification plan, the winner of the CCC on the women’s side earns an automatic berth to nationals.
